According to Sonic brand manager Aaron Webber, Sega believes that the audience for Sonic titles are on Nintendo platforms, not Xbox or PlayStation. Webber has stated that Nintendo exclusive titles such as Sonic Colors and Sonic and the Secret Rings have performed better than multi-platform release titles. When looking at sales figures across all consoles, it became apparent to the team that Nintendo consoles are where Sonic fans are.

“We just found historically that Sonic performs really, really well on Nintendo platforms. Sonic Colors did great, Sonic and the Black Knight did well and Sonic and Secret Rings did well — all Nintendo. When we look at the numbers, we thought — this is clearly where our audience is.”

It’s good to know that Sega is looking at platform-specific numbers and going where the fans will appreciate the game the most. Sonic Colors is one of the best DS games I’ve played and I’m looking forward to Sonic Lost World when it is released later this year. How do you feel about previous Sonic titles? Will you be picking up Sonic Lost World to support Sega’s support of Nintendo? Let us know in the comments below.

    Sonic Adventure 3!

  • Metroid 33slayer

We need to buy this to prove them right otherwise They will quickly change their mind if Sonic Lost world performs badly.

  • Henry Hotspur

Sonic Colors for DS and Wii sold better than Sonic Generations on 360, PS3, and PC combined.

    • Fred

How did Generations not make it onto the Wii?

      • D.M.T

I think it’s because they wanted Sonic Generations to be the best looking Sonic game ever and Wii was not powerful enough. That’s the only reason I can think of

        • Fred

It certainly would make sense. Too bad I’ve heard good things about the game. Maybe I should buy the PS3 version

      • Michael DeVore

It was most likely a test marketing things. Someone probably had a bet that they could release a title on the Wii and DS that would perform as good or better than a multiplatform version that ignored the Wii.

All of them except for the Black Knight sold 2.6M and above, but Generations had the added cost of being ported to PC, 360, PS3, and 3DS.

If the Wii was neglected for Graphical Performance then it wouldn’t have been put on the 3DS, but for testing the market it makes perfect sense. Lets the boss come down on his devs hard when they try to argue for Multiplatform.

        • Fred

I don’t know where you got those numbers, but now I’m curious do we know which platform Generations sold best on? Was it 3DS?

          • Michael DeVore

A couple of places. I went with the highest number to be on the safe side.

Gamesutra’s report that was based off of Sega’s report only had sales at 2.4M as of Feb 2012.

But they didn’t break it down by system. VGChartz breaks it down by system but they usually over estimate. Finding direct links to NPD for the most accurate numbers is near impossible so I don’t even try.

But VGChartz has the winner as the PS3 at 1.03M and the 3DS at about 0.76M, but when you look at just NA the 360 wins with 0.48M and the PS3 and 3DS are tied at 0.37M.

I trust Segas financial report more than VGChartz, but I was trying to give the Pro Generations argument the most flexibility.

    • Mysterious Destiny

Um…from what I read, Colors sold 1-2 million across all systems, while Generations sold 3-5 million across all systems, especially the Steam version. Plus, I’ve seen far more people who have played Generations than those who have played Colors.

Now, before I get mean comments thrown at me, I should have you know that I’m not dissing either game. In fact, I think Colors, Generations, and All-Stars Racing 1 and 2 are the best Sonic games we’ve had in years. I’m just saying that from what I read, Generations has outsold Colors by a long shot.

      • Marcus Navarro

*sigh* You know it’s a bad day when people are paranoid of getting hate directed towards them for stating a fact…

      • Jack5221

What about Sonic Unleashed? That game was really good, and I feel like it doesn’t get credit when it should.

        • Marcus Navarro

          Fuck Sonic Unleased.

          • Mario

Hey! That game was good you know!

          • Marcus Navarro

            Fuck Sonic Unleased.

          • Mario

Okay… I can see your not a fan of the game. Oh well! Haters gotta hate!

          • Marcus Navarro

For the record, tell me how much you enjoyed Sonic ’06.

          • Mario

I never played Sonic 06. So I really can’t give you my honest opinion about THAT game.

      • Michael DeVore

Generations only sold 2.81 million world wide.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Doesn’t sound too bad to me.

          • Michael DeVore

True, but it’s no where near 3-5 million. That and 2.81M on 4 platforms vs 2.6M for Colors and 2.6M for Secret Rings on just 2 platforms. The only one that did horribly was Black Knight at 0.95M. The added development cost and support for 4 platforms clearly makes going Nintendo exclusive with Sonic the more profitable option.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

If Sonic does best on Nintendo consoles, then I agree. Sega should stick with them.

  • Thomas Fitzgibbon

Who the hell is the pink character in the screenshot?

    • SleepySkullhead

      Espio the Chameleon

  • palomino blue

Lost World might be my most anticipated game of the year.

    • Nintedward

For me it’s Pokémon X and Y. I just can’t wait to finally play a new Pokémon game with 3D graphics…

      • Marcus Navarro

After I get Pokemon X/Y, I will be getting me some Sawnic and W101…if I have the spending money…

      • palomino blue

I’d love to have another Stadium type game that uses the stats from a current Pokemon game. Also, am I the only one who wants to see a Pokemon Snap revival on Wii U? The controls and graphics would be so awesome for that.

        • Marcus Navarro

          Yes. Yes, you are.

Anyway, I only liked Stadium as a kid, but now that I battle competitively, the only way I’d buy another Stadium-esque game would be if I can choose my EV/IV spread and moves. Even then, I’d probably hold off on it.

          • Zakariyya Al-Quran

        • Nintedward

No you aint sir!, A pokemon snap game for Wiiu has been mentioned everywhere you look. It needs to happen.

          • lonewolf88

i wonder what a pokemon fighting game would be like what if you went into a battle and you could actually dodge and use moves kind of like pokemon t.v series besides way less childish epic moves and of course ur not the trainer just telling the pokemon what to do but, you are controlling the pokemon in 3rd person view fighting. i think it would bring a new pokemon style for home consoles.

          • Michael Ocampo

I’ve wanted that so much for so long. PLEASE GAMEFREAK!!! Make this happen.

        • Baum 「ツリー」

I think one of the Devs said they won’t do it, “because they’d Need cool new ideas”

I really don’t get what he wanted to say, but I can’t imagine, that it’d be too complicated to just design a new (bigger) world and put the newer Pokemon in the game…I mean, isn’t that enough of new Content for a game, that’s about 15 years old? xD

    • crocodileman94

Mine was Rayman Legends. But Lost World is my next one.

    • Kaihaku

Super Mario 3D World for me, after playing the e3 demo, but Sonic Lost World is up there.

      • palomino blue

I haven’t played SM3DW yet but all the video I saw made it seem a bit like a 3D New Super Mario game. Is that the case or does it have more of the true 3D (64/Sunshine/Galaxy) feel?

  • Jon

and it will be the correct audience as Sony and Xbone care about graphics and killing primarily.

    • Marcus Navarro

And specs. And the almighty cloud. Don’t forget their respective online subscription services!

    • Merrfn

As a stereotype, that is true. In reality, it is not.

    • Super Buu

That’s a stereotype. A lot of Sony and Microsoft fans despise these things. I seen Sony fans preferring platformers and such over FPS games.

      • Kaihaku

Interesting. I’ve always thought of Sony fans as being more into JRPGs. That’s probably just my circle of friends.

    • crocodileman94

I’ll let the sales of Knack judge how much the Sony audience care about platformers.

  • Fred

I might grab it, but I’ve been hearing so much about Sonic Colors that i want to try it out too. Is it better on DS or Wii? Is there a significant difference?

  • Veries Seals

Of course I will pick this up. Not a doubt about that!

  • D.M.T

Sonic games should become exclusive to Nintendo platforms. Sonic doesn’t sell much on other systems because fans of other systems are too busy playing shooting games and sport games. Sonic belongs on Nintendo consoles.

    • LopsidedPasta

The case could be argued that the only company to have more Sonic sales on their consoles is SEGA themselves. And that may change before this generation is over.

      • Akatosh

Sega suffers from way too many financial problems right now to jump back on the console front yet.

        • zhenyaivan

No, Sega isn’t suffering from “way too many financial problems” if they did, they wouldn’t give up 15 something 4 million dollars to buy Atlus, you’re living in the past.

          • Irishman

They, up until this past april, have been laying off people. It’s going to at least take some recovery time and some testing of their new purchases (both relic and atlus) before they feel they have enough to come back into the market for consoles.

          • Akatosh

Where’s my Rhythm Thief sequel then?

        • LopsidedPasta

That wasn’t what I meant. I know sega will NEVER have another console again. I’m saying that before Nintendo’s next home console is released, Nintendo Sonic sales may surpass Sega Sonic sales.

          • Akatosh

Sorry, didn’t interpret your comment that way.

          • LopsidedPasta

    • Rich Garriques

not true , sonic generations sold very well on other consoles , plus id love to see a next gen sonic game on ps4 and xbox one.

      • Deadpool U

If you’ve noticed the Nintendo console Generations was on was the 3DS do you really expect the handheld version to sale more than the home console version? If it was Wii that would’ve been the version that sold most.

      • CharmanderRulz

That’s like saying Halo; a near exclusive to Xbox (like how Sonic generations is nearly not a multiplat on Nintendo as it just had 3ds) sold better on Xbox. Possibly an easier example to understand is COD. It may even have versions on IOS but when Microsoft puts millions into DLC, more advertisement and other things like servers just for COD no one is in shock to find out over 50% of COD gamers are on Xbox.

  • XelaFury

He’s obviously right, it’s still incredible for me to see how some of (if not then most of) Sonic’s games has found success on Nintendo’s platformes, despite the fact that this company used to be Sega’s rival in the past. But now that we’re talking about Sonic…… I wonder what the 3rd Nintendo-exclusive Sonic game will be?

    • Trent AB Sullivan

I am calling it now. Mario and Sonic Platforming Crossover.

      • Mario

        Like an adventure game?

        • Trent AB Sullivan

I was thinking Super Mario Galaxy gameplay with speedy gameplay and a story as immersive as Sonic Adventure 1. A guy can dream though… 🙁

      • CMB

That game will sell like hotcakes

      • Lil J Moore

I’ve been saying that for 13 years now

      • Deadpool U

What would be better is a Megaman and Sonic crossover based slightly around the comic but first Capcom would need to see that Megaman isn’t the old action figure you left under the bed and forgot about which unfortunately is impossible.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Unlikely, but it would be interesting to see how that would play out.

  • Good, let Nintendo be your buddy 😀

  • Sdudyoy

I grew up with the Genesis through the Deamcast because of Sonic and I’m still a huge fan, but I think alot of the old Sega fans now own Nintendo consoles and I think that’s part of the reason.

  • Marcus Navarro

You’re damn right it is! Welcome back to the rest of the world and ‘Grats for getting out of Gaming Purgatory, SEGA! Your alliance with your fiercest ex-rival will prove to be healthy for the Blue Blur and the Fungal Monarchy for a long time.

Now make Sonic Adventure 3, damnit! And no, Sonic ’06 doesn’t count.

  • Magnus Eriksson

I think SEGA found an interesting palette for this franchise. It got strong cartoonish colours, but still not as “gloomy” as Mario games. Not that I dont mind any of them, or prefer one over the other. But its nice to see that both styles makes great looking games. Will I pick it up? Oh, probably eventually.

  • KoopaShell

I don’t understand why everyone is hoping for a Sonic Adventure 3. That’s not how sequels work (except maybe with Sonic 4). It’s been like a decade since Sonic Adventure 2.

    • Yen

Pikmin 3, Kingdom Hearts 3, SMT 4… Nuff said.

    • C4

Mhh, I don’t know. Personally I’d like a world hub if done well, and also the Chao Garden from the 2 Sonic Adventures. Other then that it doesn’t really matter if it’s called Sonic Adventure or Sonic XYZ.

    • Castamere

I don’t understand either. The Adventure series killed the foundations that Sonic the Hedgehog was built upon.

      • CyanideInsanity

I’m curious, could you explain why?

      • Antar Rodríguez

the adventure series has been by far my favorite sonic games along with heroes, it did kill the 2d platformer idea but it was really good and a lot of people liked it i just wish they do another

      • Marcus Navarro

Erm…no, they didn’t. Sonic was built upon fast-paced 2D platforming. Those games were the transition into 3D platforming, and they worked out quite nicely. That’s like saying, “Super Mario 64 absolutely destroyed everything that made Mario great! I will never look at the Red Plumber the same way!” or, “Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars just slayed the foundations of Mario’s temple!”

There have been many 3D Sonic turds out there, but they’re only turds by virtue of not being executed correctly. They tried to extend their boundaries by using different mechanics and elements and used them very poorly, and I’m not even talking about the spinoffs. Why do you think Sonic Unleashed blew? Why do you think Sonic and the Secret Rings was bland and boring? Why do you think Shadow the Hedgehog was such a hot mess? Sonic ’06 needs no explanation to its shittiness.

    • CyanideInsanity

Time doesn’t matter. It was 14 years between donkey kong country 3 and returns.

    • Marcus Navarro

And it’s been over a decade since the last Killer Instinct, but you don’t see that stopping Microsoft from pooping one out in the most asinine way possible.

    • Ice Climbers

Need I remind you of Kid Icarus Uprising?

      • ICHI

It doesn’t matter he already debunked his own argument by mentioning sonic 4, the sequel to the 1994 megadrive classic.

    • Shota

okay lets say a game like sonic adventure 2 or sonic heroes.

  • Josiah Parsons

It’s like Nintendo gets an exclusive franchise. For Free!

  • Inkeyis

If only ubisoft saw this with Rayman legends

    • Tom Greene

Fuck Ubisuck!…hope they burn for what they did to us wii u early adopters

      • John Andalora

Wow dude. Not saying you have to like Ubisoft, but since they are the biggest supporter that Nintendo has right now, we should give some support to them.
They never had to make ZombiU or make Just Dance 2014 or Watch Dogs for Wii U.

      • Inkeyis

You mean make the exclusive zombiu, or give the continued support. You have them confused for ea.

  • Bill Bong

Sega spend the time and money to come up with something new. No more Sonic games please! Better still get back in the console business. Mag a console to out do Nintendo. You used to make awesome consoles. do it again.

    • John Andalora

I agree with you on the “No more Sonic games.”

Not with the console. Sega hasn’t made a decent game in a long time, and I certainly doubt they’ll be able to make a decent console.

  • John Andalora

    A theory:
Nintendo is the oldest console line, so people have literally grown up with them.
Sega had consoles and games at the same time.

My personal thought is that the success Sega has on Nintendo comes from the nostalgic side of Nintendo fans that look forward to seeing their favorite franchises re-explored. Sony and Microsoft (while good companies) are still rather young, so a franchise that was successful 30 some years ago wouldn’t have much gain on their consoles.

Just my thoughts. Agree or disagree?

    • Pokewarrior2000

      Let’s agree to agree.

      • John Andalora

    • Zombie Boy

I agree completely. A lot of Nintendo fans grew up with their consoles (alongside Sega’s) and are now buying those same consoles for their kids and introducing them to the same game franchises they played growing up. That is why the classics do so well on Nintendo consoles. Personally, I’m glad of this – give me Sonic over Call Of Duty any time!

    • Nintenjoe82

An idea: Sega should give Nintendo all of their other old franchises to see how well they sell on Wii U either at retail or VC. Games I would buy on their release date:
      Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2
      Sega Rally 1 & 2
      Fighters Megamix
      Shenmue (remake preferably)
      Chu Chu Rocket

      • Kaihaku

        Phantasy Star Online.

    • Διονύς84

I grew up with Super Nintendo and Master System/ Mega Drive, so spot on. SEGA+Nintendo united for the win

    • Kaihaku

Which is why we really need to see Megaman, Bomberman, Castlevania, and more of the old guard on the Wii U.

  • QuaFicK

but I have all sonic games on steam?

  • Gregg

    Support the WiiU. Rock on

  • Daniel Gonzalez

Sounds like a wonderful relationship. Here’s an idea, Mario/Sonic platform cross over(similar to Galaxy). Mario and Sonic seem very cozy of late, why not?

    • Mario

      Maybe. Or something better…

      • Kaihaku

Maybe Fire Emblem x SMT will end up having Sega headnods?

        • Mario

That’s not what I’m talking about.

  • Shota

Sega has also a untitled sonic game in the works as part of their partnership with nintendo. I hope Sonic Adventure 3. The game mechanics, the characters you could play as , chao garden and shadow first appearance made sonic adventure 2 a huge succes among sonic fans. I hope when they make sonic adverture 3 they introduce a new character like shadow or have more playable characters with each a new ability. Chao garden would be also fun. With Wii U gamepad there is so much new innovative things to do.

    • Pokewarrior2000

Aw man! I completely forgot about that! I’m really starting to wonder what it is.

  • Antar Rodríguez

great, i really have liked the sonic franchise until the last 3 games, but if they just keep making games like colors or lost world and not like adventure 1 or 2 or heroes i´ll just stop buying them

  • david jarman

  • TULFich

Now if only they didn´t screwed up with Shadow the hedgehog, we could have a great second game of the best antihero of all sega in our consoles, or even in the SSB universe, u guys played Sonic Battle right?

    • Mario

What are you talking about? Shadow the hedgehog was a good game. I know the game was a bit controversial for a Sonic game. But if you can see through all that, you might find a lot of enjoyment in this game.

      • Marcus Navarro

That game sucks more than outer space.

        • Mario

Not really. It was actually pretty fun. At least to me.

          • Marcus Navarro

I absolutely despised that damn game. It doesn’t even deserve a paragraph to explain its shittiness.

          • Mario

Oh well. Your opinion! Not mine!

        • DavEd

          Man, Haters gonna hate

          • Marcus Navarro

            Especially when it’s justified.

      • TULFich

Is not a bad game, but it could have been a much more better one, and I think it runs at 60fps if I´m not wrong. I still have my copy of it, I pre-ordered it, and as much fun as I had with it I still can´t believe why the gave shadow weapons and vehicle? He dah a lot of badass moves in Sonic adventure 2 and Sonic Battle why they had to underpower him? and that led to a bad performance in his sonic the hedgehog´s (xbox 360) story line. And because of that now plenty of people don´t know how that character could fit in further games neither the developers do anymore, and it is sad. =(

        • Mario

I can’t say anything about that. Especially since I never played Sonic 06.

  • Jared Garcia

With no last gen consoles to work on, Sega can put full use of the Wii U hardware to work.

  • $41809923

  • Aaron

Sonic just feels right with Nintendo. He seems to fit right in which is awesome. I think that the Sonic franchise could return to it’s prime on Nintendo consoles. Sonic lost world is looking better every day, and I think it proves that Nintendo could possibly be his new home. Maybe it will happen, maybe not. But it’s great to think about.

  • Logan Wayman

How about a new Sonic fighting game? You can play as a lot of characters from future and past Sonic games, and heck, you can even play as the villains! (Ex. Zavok vs. Mephiles, Eggman vs. Chaos, Metal Sonic vs. Zazz, and even Iblis vs. Dark Gaia!!!)

    • DavEd

Sonic the fighters (sega model), Sonic Battle (GBA)

  • ICHI

I bloody loved Sonic Colours. I only got it for the wii for my nephew as he is sonic nuts but it was the best one in the series since Sonic 3! it really did surprise me that much.

  • Carlos

Hum…exclusive titles…you know why this sonic is an exclusive, I’ll give you a hint: Aliens Colonial Marines.

  • Lophs

The black knight and Secret ring were horrible games. All the sudden the complaints about other console fans being obsessed with graphics at the expense of game play seems hypocritical b/c those Sonic titles were crap in every department.

  • Agent721

The new one looks very cool…Im aboard!

  • RockieOllie

    How times have changed

  • therealruben1

  • lonewolf88

watch guys now the sony fans are going to say they want a sonic game just to try and make sonic become there exclusive just so they can say you got the defenitive version! they already tried doing that with eternal darkness which the campaign is a scam don’t fund it!

  • disqus_jnx8BgXLZd

Is this when Nintendo buys SEGA, which means they’d be buying Atlus as well *-*?

  • segaXnintendo

im in gaming design & i would love to make a sonic trailer of a game like unleashed, except without the over dramatic change. my vision would be a sonic as his usual self, with same style in lost world (parkour system) and speed but with the fighting action from unleashed. the day sega does that would be amazing.

  • feas

If only they would say the same about SMT & Persona.

I just don’t want to have to buy a ps4.

    • Ryan House

So Wii U will be your Only Next Gen Console?

  • Ryan House

I’ve got Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 as well as Sonic Hereos. One thing I find with Sega is they don’t Polish their games like Nintendo Does. Nintendo doesn’t release a game unless the Camera is Perfect. in Sega games the Camera can get Caught and I hate when I can’t Force the Camera behind me. I love the Camera is the 3D zelda games.

I have these games for Gamecube

I owned a Sega Genesis at one Point I had Sonic 2 and 3 as well as Sonic and Knuckles. My mother with out my Permission tried to give away my SNES. which is my favorite console. so I ended up giving the Genesis away. I don’t regret it. When ever I’d play Games that were release on both Genesis and SNES I prefered the SNES version.

I thought I would give Mortal Kombat II and The Lion King for Genesis. Friends owned them for SNES and they were so much better. I re-purchased MKII for SNES.

The Lion King On Genesis was Beyond Hard. I think it was Buggy. also the Sprite Characters were much smaller. The SNES also had Much Better AUDIO and More Colours on Screen

  • SuperSonicBrawler

About time they figured this out. My first console ever was a Dreamcast and I bought it for Sonic Adventure. And when Sega decided to go 3rd party, the first think I did was buy a GameCube. Now that we have your attention Sega, how about a Sonic Adventure 3, or Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg 2?

  • Link Slayer

The Sega Genicide should be there next console because they will slay all others

  • SuperSmashLinkMo

Sonic Only On Nintendo Platforms PERFECT

  • SuperSmashLinkMo

it’s looks like that sonic is a nintendo character bu t is’t still a sega character

  • Maraccuda

    SEGA! If you are so chummy chummy with Nintendo then make more of an effort to release;
-Atlus games (now that you own them)
-PSO2 (MMOs will work really well on the Wii U)
    -Virtual Console games (Dreamcast esp)
-Revitalise some old classics (Shining Force, Skies of Arcadia, etc)
-Other things I can’t quite think of right now!

  • Varun Sriram

imagine 20 years ago people would never think this would ever happen
