The SNES PlayStation prototype was a never-marketed piece of hardware from both Sony and Nintendo. This was Nintendo’s attempt to start a console that used CDs as its storage media instead of cartridges. The two companies could never agree on the production of the console and eventually, Sony took their creation and transformed it into the PlayStation brand we have today.

These rare pieces of hardware have often been photographed, but we’ve not seen one in action until now.

The folks over at HKGolden have a few shots of father and son team Terry and Dan Diebold, who showcased the prototype earlier this year. The console boots up as you can see below, but because there were never any SNES CD games produced, you can’t do much but play SNES games on it.
