In a recent rumor perpetuated by a German website, a representative of Nintendo in Germany is said to have confirmed the Super Smash Bros. release date for some time in Spring 2014. We didn’t publish the rumor because there was shoddy evidence at best, but according to two recent tweets by developer Masahiro Sakurai, the rumor is false anyway.

Siliconera took time to translate two of Sakurai’s tweets in which he confirms that Super Smash Bros. does not have a solid release date in any quarter, only that it’s coming in 2014. Fans of the series can keep up with development on Miiverse and the official Super Smash Bros. site, where screenshots are released daily and roster updates occur frequently.

While this rumor squashing will undoubtedly make many fans disappointed the game isn’t coming in Q1, this is why it’s best to wait for official announcements.

    Late & disappointing

  • I sure am disappointed >.>

    • Ducked

I’m not, I wasn’t counting on it releasing that early :p

      • Well they’ve been in development a pretty long time. I was hoping 😛

    • Hipster Victor

Better to wait that to get an unfinished game

      • I was hoping it’d be finished by then

  • Lil J Moore

I knew it wasn’t gonna be released in Spring

    • Nintedward

When you have franchises the caliber of Mario Kart and Smash bros, you need to make sure that they release, at the very least, a minimum of 3 months apart!

Smash bros brawl is the highest selling fighting game ever and Mario Kart wii sold 35,000,000+…. It would be suicide to release these games alongside each other!!!!

      • DragonSilths

Disagree. Mario Kart 8 isn’t on 3DS like Smash Bros is. So Smash Bros 3DS would sell great as would MK8 on Wii U. Only Smash Bros on Wii U would suffer abit. But its the held back version anyway so meh not a big deal.

        • Hipster Victor

Held back? What do you mean by that

          • Guest

yea i don’t get way he is saying the wii u version is the held back version too me it dose’t look held back.

          • Kar

basically he means that in order to have the wii u version similar to the 3ds version they had to cut back on a lot. Basically hold off on a lot for the Wii U version. Which makes me regret its coming out for 3dS. Thus the low roster count Sakurai talked about

          • German2508

I don’t think he means that. I think he meant the 3DS is the held back version. Because why the hell would you put less or equal features on the console that is more powerful.

          • DragonSilths

No, the 3DS version is NINTENDOS FOCUS. They were only going to do a 3DS version originally, NO WII U VERSION AT ALL. Nintendo said they thought the only way to innovate Smash Bros was to make it on the go with the 3DS. The 3DS cant compete with the Wii U version so the Wii U version is being held back by the 3DS being weaker.

          • DragonSilths

Sakurai never said a low roster, he said don’t expect it to be a bigger roster then Brawl.

          • Hipster Victor

But the 3DS is capable of taking alot of fighters, I mean look at Tekken 3D. Its only about 2 gigs yet it has about maybe 40+ characters

          • DragonSilths

The reason for not having more then 40 characters is NOT cause of limitations. Its cause Smash Bros doesn’t need to be DBZ with 150 damn characters. 40 is a perfect number. Any more and its just to damn much.

          • Hipster Victor

Yeah, I was thinking the WiiU will be the superior version

          • Shota

yep, more memory. sakurai said in a interview 3ds would be limited because of the hardware so they make a wii u version too or else it would have been 3ds only title

          • Guest

I don’t know way he is saying the wii u version is the held back version too me it does’t look held back.

          • Hipster Victor

I know right. I dont get it either. I can understand him saying the 3DS is the held back version due to the hardware, but the WiiU? Nahh

          • DragonSilths

As Nintendo said, they were originally only going to do a Smash Bros for 3DS NO WII U VERSION AT ALL. Then they decided to make a Wii U version. However they don’t want either to be better then the other. So the 3DS is weaker then the Wii U, therefor the Wii U isn’t able to use its full potential with Smash Bros cause it would destroy the 3DS version.

          • Funkee Dynamite

            yes please explain

          • Ugslick

He’s making this up as he goes along.

        • lonewolf88

they release at the same time.

          • DragonSilths

            I never said they wouldn’t?

        • fantasyorins

How is it the held back version?

          • iLoveXojo

Because the Wii U version is essentially a port of the 3DS version as Smash 4 was originally a 3DS exclusive.

      • palomino blue

Smash Brawl and Mario Kart Wii were released in March and April of the same year and they both did pretty well. I’m not sure releasing them in the same quarter would hurt anything from a sales perspective.

        • Nintendo Dragon

Well to be honest both titles were both announced together in 2011. I am sure the game will not be limited as much as people think because brawl and melee weren’t super high on the gigabyte count and they still had a good amount of characters, trophies, game modes, and overall just a ton of content. I can see a decent roster size, but I’m sure this is why there is no subspace emissary which pisses me off honestly :/, but Sakurai has only failed me on one thing ever and that is taking Mewtwo out of the game, so I trust Namco and Sora LTD will do a great job no matter what because if I were a developer I would be working to destroy Project M, which brings me to another point I had Project M is only 512 Megabytes and it has 41 characters the 3ds can hold more than 512 megabytes and it probably won’t have as many trophies and other things like that as the wii u version, so I’m sure Roster size is no problem it’s just hard for them to work on two games at the same time.

  • Matt Elgie

Anyone else feeling like this is going to be their Xmas release next year like SM3DW was this year. I really hope not, but I just have an odd feeling.

    • Nintenjoe82

Hopefully they’ll surprise us all and release Mario Kart in January, DKC in February and Smash Bros in March. Reggie did say there wouldn’t be a drought in 2014……

      • Matt Elgie

Yes, but Reggie says alot of shit. And Mario Kart in January would be awesome, but that is weeks away. Not happening. We need release dates, nothing on X,Kart, Smash or Zelda. But we get DK,WOOT WOOT!

        • Yousif Alromaithi

Don’t insult Reggie because his body will be ready.

        • Squid

Dude, don’t blame Reggie, he doesn’t make those decisions.

          • Matt Elgie

What blame? Did I blame him for not giving us release dates. Nope. I just stated those would be a nice. I just said I doubted the drought comment made above. No blame, just doubt.

          • Squid

Yeah but I don’t see the point of complaining on that one situation. VGX was terrible all together. GTA V did not deserve GOTY, (not saying that Mario did either, though I loved that game), and I got bored throughout. If Reggie/Iwata had a big announcement it’s better going off Ina. Nintendo direct, which should be soon, we haven’t got this month’s yet.

      • Nintedward

Naaaah. More like DKCTF in feb, MK8 in April and SSB4 in July/August

X and Bayonetta 2 should be ready by half way through the year 😉

        • Rinslowe

Exactly, feasible too all things considered.

      • Ducked

I’d expect Mario Kart 8 in early March. Releasing before Tropical Freeze wouldn’t make much sense.

      • Magnus Eriksson

        He lied

        • Nintenjoe82

E3 2014 Reggie is gonna be like Arnie in Commando.
Reggie: Hey remember when I said there were going to be games?…..
          …….I lied.

          • Magnus Eriksson

            Looool 😀

    • LoBo_UK

Zelda U I think will be the Christmas release for next year , MK8 is rumored to be April , Smash Brothers some time in the summer probably around July – August time , but either way It will be a good year.

      • I don’t think we’ll see a release of Zelda U 2014, but more likely summer 2015, although I hope you are right and it’ll release in 2014, but I won’t put up my hopes to high

    • DragonSilths

Nope Zelda HD is November 2014.

      • Majora’s Mask

zelda u is a 2015 game at earliest they need at least 5 years for a zelda game and the new hardware certainly doesnt make it easy

        • Squid

We will see, 2011 is when skyward sword was finished, obviously they have been working on it longer than 5 years.

          • Majora’s Mask

? !!!!!!!? ?,?,?,?,? DO THE MATH PLUS THEY ALSO WORKED ON ALBW AND WW HD

        • DragonSilths

They started Zelda HD as soon as they had a working Wii U prototype. Once November 2014 gets here it will have been in the works for 4 years roughly.

          • Majora’s Mask

well still not 5 which is a normal number for zelda ss was developed for 5 years and its still not a HUGE game so if zelda u is nintendos biggest game i dont see it overpassing any other zelda game in content

          • DragonSilths

Bigger team, and most of Nintendo focused on that for awhile.

          • Majora’s Mask

i know but gosh i dont want it in 2014 for a reason i prefer it 2015 my pocket wont bear it

          • DragonSilths

It’s Nintendo’s biggest games. You put yourself in debt for them. Its the way of the gamer.

    • Hipster Victor

Pray it will be release in the summer

      • Nintendo Dragon

I really hope so I wanted to just spend my entire summer playing the hell out of Smash Bros.

  • Antar Rodríguez
  • Seth S. Scott

    thanksgiving 2014

  • NintenScience

    Siliconera? I hate that website…

    • DarkLegacy

Wrong website. Go on to your website

  • C4

Spring is actually Q2 to a large part 😉

Also the german article just says “next year” (2014) as far as I can see.

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

As always i rather have a really good solid finished game, then a game that comes a few months before and comes with alots of expensive DLC’s.

  • Christopher Acuna

We’ll be lucky if we get it in August

  • Squid

I felt that was the case with all the delays with brawl I wouldn’t expect this game to come out so soon. Even with Namco’s help.

  • Somewhat disappointing, but we can wait for it,and while waiting we can play other games.

  • Ducked

An October/November release date in 2014 seems likely. Nintendo will have it’s big hitter around the holiday season, plus we haven’t seen much game play footage. I’d be shocked if the game came out before August at least.

  • mojack411

Is anyone actually surprised by that?

  • Denvy

It needs to come out in Q1, but I’m surprised anyone actually thought it would.

  • Jon

they never said it was spring 2014, this was just people getting mixed up with the Mario Kart release date. Now we will get to hear a bunch of idiots complaining about Nintendo making delays when there was none.

  • Justin Carlson

Use the time to make the adventure portion more epic.

  • Simon Stevens

They’ve been busy, it’ll probably come just before or just after E3

    • Mario

Well that came out of nowhere.

      • Simon Stevens

I love how Nintendo can take something so simple and bring us so much happiness with it.

    • Shota

yes! mario kart 7 had tanooki tail. so mario kart 8 should have cat ears!!. dunno how the item will work though.

  • Shane ♓

I love how everyone is talking about how it’s “disappointing” that a game is being “delayed” yet it never had an official release date nor an estimated release outside of 2014. Don’t get mad at Nintendo because you let yourself believe in a RUMOR!

    • jreed3842

Agreed! I was getting annoyed that people were like “IT’S BEING DELAYED!” And… As long as it comes out in 2014 like they said it would, there’s no way of it being “delayed” because there was never an official release date. Just a rumor that they fell for.
I’m glad you an I are on the same page, lol.

  • Yoshi5081

  • As long as they get other triple A titles out in the first quarter( dkc:tf for example to many counter as tripple A, but single A title for me) I don’t mind waiting for Q2 or Q3 even, as long as we won’t get the same drought we had in 2013 I’mfine with it.

  • MujuraNoKamen

Dang, can’t say I’m surprised though. As long as Kart and DK are out in by March then Wii U wont suffer a drought like it did in 2013. And if not then Nintendo will miss their sales targets.

  • Shagrath1983

Just downloaded Project M 3.0 …..Take your time Nintendo im good for awhile

  • Dimitri Theodosakis

    I Expect
Worldwide Release Date Announcement: E3 2014
    Worldwide Release Date: September 2014

  • fantasyorins

Take your time sakurai we can all wait for it to come out.

  • Ian Settlemyer

If it’s not going to be Spring 2014, it should be Summer 2014, right?

  • Levi Johansen

As always: “a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad”.

I want everything right now, but if that means the quality will be compromised, then I’d rather wait.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Wii U Party delayed. Not good game. Forever bad.

      • Virus6

        It just wasn’t delayed enough

      • Levi Johansen

Wii U Party is just a bad copy of Game & Wario with a couple of board games.

I’m pretty sure they focused on other things, and released Wii U Party just because they wanted it out at the same time as Wii Fit U and Wii Sports Club.

  • Gauru Shiro

theres on thing that I am really nervous about this game… Pokemon xand y had framerate drops when 6 pokemon were on the screen in triple battles, so what happens when smash bros is playing, will it have framerate issues too?

  • NkoSekirei

they better bring back captain falcon, ganondorf, and zero suit samus or they ll be some carnage and angry mobs if those characters dont come back and its just that they havent announced any new or old characters for a while that would be coming.

  • MewThree28

I would prefer SSB4 to come out in Q4 or Q1 2015. And to the people saying that releasing them too close to each other would hurt them, weren’t MKWii and Brawl released only a month apart?

    • Virus6

Are you suggesting that either of those didn’t sell well? They did great

      • MewThree28

No I’m suggesting the exact opposite. But I mean that if the 2 games wont do good released only a month or 2 apart, then my question is why did Brawl and MKWii sell so good as they were released only one month apart?

  • Philip Park

I’m actually happy it’s not going to be released in the Spring.
I want them to make the game as good as possible, even if it’s coming out late.

  • wiimenonowiiu

Its simple Mario cart 8 release just before summer and smash brother fall and zelda for xmas next year 2015 mega man f-zero and maybe a new Mario

    In between 3rd party games

That’s a pretty good line up just need more online play

  • TheKingJoseph

lmao another game delayed by the little n. what else is new? RIP wii u

    • Rinslowe

You obviously haven’t read the article. Smash was never confirmed for a spring release, only rumoured. Now that rumour has been debunked by the developer.
The larger rumour being that one of the two first party big hitters will be released in spring. That still leaves Kart. And if the rumour is true, Kart would have been the more likely title anyway due to how much time it has been in development.
Your comment makes no sense because of this.

      • Justin Parris

Also note, he didn’t say it isn’t releasing in spring, he said it currently has no release date.

        • Rinslowe

True. Still I don’t see it coming in spring. Back at E3 it was barely playable. Out of Kart or Smash to make a spring release, I’d bet on Kart…

          • Justin Parris

Agreed. I was just pointing out the further ridiculousness of calling it “delayed”. Not only did it not have a date to begin with, but it hasn’t officially been pushed back either.

    • Guest

      R.I.P @TheKingJoseph:disqus

  • starwars360

That is ok as long as game going epic. It is good have more time in developing and polishes much time.
We trusts Nintendo as always. They always deliver amazing games most of times!!!

  • iLoveXojo

LMAO. How can he “de-confirm” something that was confirmed by Nintendo themselves? Nintendo said that smash would be releasing in Spring 2014.

    • Virus6

The site that did the interview mistranslated what Nintendo said.

  • devmiles

it’s like with all the nintendo delays or confirmations or non confirmations… even as a nintendo fan i don’t even care anymore..and that i meant negatively.. sony does what nintendon’t!

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

Well then we know that’s more coming for Super Smash Bros 3DS/WiiU

  • Ugslick

It still might come in Spring 2014. just that it’s not confirmed. Idk what my guess would be.
