In today’s Smash Brothers Nintendo Direct, game director Masahiro Sakurai took time out the presentation to talk tech with the fans. He talked about the game’s frame rate, which is how fast the images are updated on the screen. For frames per second, 60 is the ideal number. Sakurai has confirmed that the characters in the game will be running at a blazing 60 FPS. This came as quite a surprise, seeing how other 3DS games such as Pokémon X and Pokémon Y had some very blatant frame rate issues. Sakurai also went on to say that other elements such as assist trophies and Pokémon summoned from Pokéballs will run at 30 frames per second. This was done so the main action with the characters wouldn’t be affected. There was absolutely no mention of the game’s frame rate on the Wii U. local_offer 3DS assist trophies framerate Nintendo Smash Brothers wii u stars Further Reading F-Zero X gets updated on Wii U to fix control New Zelda Breath of the Wild trailer and game Super Mario Maker Wii U vs 3DS comparison (vi Get Ocarina of Time on 3DS for only $14 New teaser site for Zelda: Breath of the Wild released How to track NES Classic Mini stock in time for Christmas Zorpix The Wii U framerate not being mentioned worries me… I’ve seen it have issues with the likes of Wind Waker, then have not a problem with games like Injustice, so I’m not sure what to expect… Sdudyoy I think it will be fine, the only reason they brought up the 3DS version is because most 3DS games have frame rate issues. Zorpix true, but some Wii U games have issues too :/ Guest Bust those are ports… This game was built from the ground up on the Wii U. Zorpix Not all of them. 3D world dropped every now and then ConCity Soldier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVVtDpUa5Jk Looks like it’s constantly 60fps to me. Bob Greenfield Youtube videos are capped at 30 fps. ConCity Soldier I’m going off of what Digital Foundry has. It says 60.0 fps. Christopher Ryan The source video is 60fps, but youtube has a max playback of 30fps at normal, 1x speed. IGN and a few other sites have gameplay and trailers at 60fps. Check it out. http://www.ign.com/videos/2014/04/03/mario-kart-8-60-fps-montage Notice it’s not hosted on youtube. Rinslowe There’s the thing. Eurogamer and their Digital Foundry attack dog have had an axe to grind with Nintendo since the launch of the Wii U. And they never update their analysis’ when title performance updates come out, which IMO is criminal. So if they’re saying a constant 60fps. Then that’s quite accurate… 😛 Fierce-Deity Link really? i played 4 player co-op and there wasn’t any issues at all .. that’s odd to hear xD Zorpix It was usually when things were blowing up oontz I noticed this too, and was promptly flamed for even mentioning it on wiiudaily when SM3DW released. Zorpix When SM3DW was released, you couldn’t give an honest opinion on it anywhere without being flamed oontz Ha ha, this is true. Rinslowe That was melodramatic. If memory severs me correctly it was me that replied to you. And you were never “flamed” for saying so… Only corrected. oontz “Only corrected.” You didn’t correct anything, I still notice slow down on some parts of SM3DW. Also it wasn’t only you that had things to say. Rinslowe “You didn’t correct anything” Haha… Yeah I admit, that was put there to be cheeky. 😛 oontz I thought so. Daniel Gonzalez http://i445.photobucket.com/albums/qq179/Brian-Griffin/Cheekybastard.jpg Fierce-Deity Link hmm.. nothing happened to us… maybe the gaming Gods were on our side haha Zorpix they must’ve been! It may be worth noting I downloaded the game. I’ve heard that makes it slower Rinslowe The only times I can recall framerates lowering in SM3DW was when certain powerup animations caused the game to slow down, which like Zelda is completely intentional. I wish Ninty would actually get over that one small aspect. It was really just a hand holding feature that allowed players to have visual cues of whats going on. But the player has evolved past that already, lol. Kinda like film… Zorpix I wouldn’t call that framerate dropping… But I do agree that we don’t need everything to stop when getting a powerup Ultrasyd Lego City Undercover has horrible framerate MerryBlind . Don’t worry, Wii U version won’t run any lower than a butter-smooth 60fps. Wind Waker had slowdowns because the original did too, and they didn’t change the coding and whatnot, only some visuals tweak, so the slowdowns that occurred in the original occur at the same moment in the ‘remake’. Zorpix It’s nice to hear, but I want to hear it said by Sakurai Kaleb 3DS version is going to be released before E3 I say, then at E3 Nintendo may blow us out of the water for the WiiU version, hopefully Zorpix eh… since we’ll already have seen so much of the game once the 3DS version is released, I’d hope they focus on something else for Wii U. Arthur Jarret Wow, you’re a demanding little fake pokémon, aren’t you? Zorpix Ya damn right I am XD I’m just grumpy because I wasn’t announced for smash bros >.> readypembroke Yeah, so far Wind Waker HD is the only first party game with FPS issues. I only experienced issues when I was close to Fire Mountain. Other than that, no issues. John very true, and the it only had issues due to it being a port. as most ports do. Zorpix I had issues during the first boss, and when fighting mega octopus. It ALWAYS drops for mega octopus 20xx It’s pretty much necessary for fighting games to run at 60fps. Melee ran at 60fps and so did Brawl. I wouldn’t be worried. Zorpix good point Magnus Eriksson expecf 60fps Mario I don’t really think it was necessary for Sakurai to mention that. brian Really? I thought it was. Those of us who play our 3DSs in 3D notice severe framerate problems (with the exception of maybe Zelda LBW) Arthur Jarret And Layton x Ace attorney, and AA5… but those aren’t frame-reliant games. Ridge racer worked very well in 3D, and so did Starfox 64 3D Pokemon has the worst framerate in 3D – in the parts where it’s even 3D at all. Mario I was talking about the WiiU version. ActivesiN I wouldnt worry about it, 720p 60fps most likely they need to keep some secrets before its launch….in Winter companyoflosers all first party games after pikmin 3 run in full 1080p. its been their policy since then. MerryBlind . lol wut? So far only Wind Waker HD runs in 1080p. 3D World and DK Tropical Freeze both run in 720p@60fps. MK8 will probably be 720p@60fps too, however I think the rumors of Smash being 1080p might turn out to be true after all. Yen I believe MK8 was confirmed to be 1080p. At some point Smash on Wii U was too I think. Ultrasyd I don’t really care for Smash Bros, but I hope Mario Kart is 1080p and 60fps all the way ! Because yes, it makes a difference, at least on my TV : ) Rinslowe Kart since the latest Nintendo event, has been running in 1080p. There’s no reason to expect Nintendo would “so close to release” make it 720p instead… MerryBlind . Well I hope you’re right! Rinslowe “Nintendo has also stated that the game will run at 1080p and 60 frames per second in single-player mdoe, but only 30 frames per second in multiplayer (we assume split screen, we’ll ask about online).” http://metro.co.uk/2014/04/03/new-mario-kart-8-trailer-shows-retro-tracks-no-blue-shells-confirmed-4687301/ (It was also mentioned that it will maintain 60fps in two player split as well) “The upside? The game is spectacular, at 1080p, 60FPS. As the first HD Mario Kart, the game looks just stunning. Now, it does take a drop in this department when you come to three or four person multiplayer, dropping to 30FPS and with some graphical downsides, but none of these will affect gameplay.” http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/21179/article/mario-kart-8-s-latest-trailer-revels-in-60-fps-gameplay-new-characters-courses-items-revealed/ “This is the first big step up for Wii U, a real visual showcase, running in 1080p at 60 frames per second (and goodness knows we’ve waited a long time to say that).” http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/52188/previews/mario-kart-8-preview/ MerryBlind . Then I am truly blown away. Thanks for the links. I still can’t believe this game will be 1080p; it’s too good to be true hahaha Ultrasyd I think you are wrong. Daniel Gonzalez It will probably run at 15fps, but if you act now, you can buy the special LAN cable and push it to 30 frames. uPadWatcher Actually, it runs at 60fps. Daniel Gonzalez Sarcasm. companyoflosers of course the wii u will run at 60fps for this title! why the hell wouldnt it?! if they can run a large game like bayonetta 2 at 1080p 60fps then they can run a game on a single stage with up to four characters at 1080p 60fps no problem. Ultrasyd Many (all ?) Nintendo games are 720p so far… New Super Mario Bros U, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze are all 720p, I wonder why. Bayonetta isn’t out yet so we’ll have to wait and see. Is there a 1080p 60fps game so far, besides Windwaker ? Vriska Serket Pah doesnt matter. As long as its at least 30 fps you cant really notice or care. Enumerating Wishes I beg to differ. It looks as clear as night and day if you ask me. 20xx Of all the gaming genres where 60fps is crucial, fighting games are one of the most important. Also, to say that there isn’t a visual difference between 30fps and 60fps is absolutely ridiculous. oontz I agree there is a noticeable difference between FPS and resolutions. greengecko007 http://www.testufo.com/#test=framerates There is an obvious difference between 30fps and 60fps for the non-visually impaired. While I’m sure there are plenty of people with less than perfect vision that may not be able to tell the difference, those of us that can greatly appreciate it. NintendoNoob but can the 3ds’ display handle 60hz? CyanideInsanity Yes, Mario kart 7 plays at 60fps. Scoopz I thought they already mentioned last year that the Wii U versions frame rate was 60fps? Same time they revealed the 1080p resolution Rinslowe Wii U has already made a formal mention, many months ago. 1080p 60fps. I think the translation should have said clearly 3DS is “also” running in 60fps… But got lost… Zorpix do you have a link for that? Rinslowe These guys aren’t the most reliable source. Check the “update” just under direct video. Also the “fps” was mentioned during E3. You could probably find an E3 video which has that mentioned on the floor. Pretty sure from memory where I heard it. But can’t be ass’d going through all the vids to confirm. Feel free to check it out… http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-06-11-super-smash-bros-for-wii-u-and-3ds-due-2014 Even so, the resolution is all but confirmed from various places. Nothing obviously is concrete. But no reason the believe otherwise. And the framerate has been a serious focus for Nintendo since SM3DW. Personally even without the resolution reference I think it would be also fair to assume 60fps at this point. Of course that’s not a concrete statement until proof, granted. If I come across it it’ll be linked here… Zorpix Hrm… well that’s nifty. Thanks Rinslowe! Arthur Jarret In Hyrule, there’s a link for everything! oontz “Wii U has already made a formal mention, many months ago. 1080p 60fps.” Things change all the time in this industry… maybe once it was further into development they realized they couldn’t hit those numbers. Rinslowe Could be… And in all fairness I cannot find a source for the fps… But there’s also no reason to think Nintendo will backtrack on their fps goal for first party titles. (Even though Smash is being developed by Sakurai and his team, it still qualifies) So I’ll drop that comment down a notch and assume the likely outcome is still 60fps… Since SM3DW we’ve also had mentioned DK 60fps, Kart 60fps, Bayo 2 60fps… So there is more in favour of Smash following suit. Again though, that’s hardly concrete until a source can be found on the framerate. oontz I agree… it would be more likely that the resolution dropped before the FPS did. But until Nintendo officially says either way, we wont know. Rinslowe Yep, it’s much more likely the resolution would have been dropped before the framerate. As we can clearly see Nintendo are happy to release games in native 720p with hardware upscaling, but have a definite vision on frames per second… But, this is more about proof and as I haven’t been able to find it regarding the framerate I’ll again step back on that comment as a concrete mention. Arthur Jarret I hope they’ll keep 1080p… 720p is pretty blocky on my screen. Ultrasyd 720p, here too, is indeed blocky, when the engine and polishing aren’t that good. Sometimes I have to plug my Wii U on a smaller TV, when I want something less blocky :/ But Nintendo’s game are quite nice in 720. Arthur Jarret That’s true – but there is an obvious difference between the 1080p and 720p even in well-designed games (judging by the PS3 and PS4 release of Flower) – that is very noticeable if you have a huge screen. On my 32″ screen in my gameroom… not so much. Ultrasyd I totally agree with you. It’s 2014 now. It’s time to move forward and go 1080p, with the TV we have ! Arthur Jarret Microsoft and Sony didn’t get that memo either (Wii U still has more native 1080p games… and 720p upscaled to 1080p actually looks better when ran in the native 720p to prevent stretching artefacts). But big screens are getting more and more common – so I hope high-res games will also become more common. NyallJodhan What size of TV do you have please? That you can notice a difference between 720/1080? I’m just curious, because I’m shopping TVs right now. oontz Any screen over 32″ at the proper viewing distance will show a difference between those two resolutions. Arthur Jarret Depends on anti-aliasing used. oontz Not really, that would smooth the edges a bit but on a large display you’re still going to be able to tell the difference between the two. At least I can anyways. Arthur Jarret I can too… then again, I got a 160″ screen – so that’s no surprise :p oontz Sounds amazing for gaming. Arthur Jarret It is – especially multiplayer games, where it’s like each player has his own TV screen! The beamer I use isn’t even THAT much more expensive than a 3D TV. Since getting it and showing it to mates, several of them have picked one up too Arthur Jarret I’ve got an Acer H6510BD full HD beamer. This gives me an screen of ~160″. The beamer also supports 3D with DLP-link glasses (none included). It’s not even that pricey – €700 over here (most 3D 42″ TVs are €500 to €600) You need to have a smooth wall or a projector screen for it – but it gives an awesome image. I’m glad I spent months researching the best quality to value ratio to be able to find this model. oontz “720p upscaled to 1080p actually looks better” Ha ha, upscaling to 1080p NEVER looks better than a native resolution of 1080p. What are you smoking. Arthur Jarret Yeah, I mis-typed: I meant: Native 720p output at 720p looks better than native 720p upscaled to 1080p. Of course, native 1080p trumps all. oontz “Of course, native 1080p trumps all.” Agreed, for now until 4k becomes the norm. Arthur Jarret I don’t notice THAT much of a difference on even the larger screens on the in-store demos. I think it’ll be a while until people will be ready to upgrade their TVs – especially noting current cost not matching the perceived added value at all. Seeing advances like morpheus, facebook-branded oculus and peripherals are just around the corner, I’d say VR will be mainstream before 4K (especially as neither of the brand new consoles is even handling 1080p/60FPS very well – it’ll be a long time until 4K is a norm in console gaming) oontz Sorry I meant 4k in the sense of watching movies and television, not gaming consoles. Rinslowe Well the resolution is confirmed. Which then leads me to believe the fps will be also – 60fps. No reason to expect otherwise, unless they release it @ 30fps… Ultrasyd Yeah, pretty sure they will do what is necessary to keep 60fps. But as Donkey Kong and Mario 3D World are 720p, I won’t be surprised that this one is also 720p, but 60fps. We’ll see ! Rinslowe Smash was confirmed @ a 1080p target… I don’t think that’s changed. And if the resolution hasn’t been mentioned to have changed at this point. Then it’s still likely the framerate is also 60fps… John Very doubtful, especially given the WiiUs power. oontz If that was the case then every wiiu game would be 1080p and 60fps. But they’re not. It would also mean that every PS4 game (due to being more powerful than wiiu) would also be 1080p and 60fps. Which they’re not. Meeting those goals depends on the assets used in game design. Some games have no issues reaching those numbers, other struggle to. At this point It has nothing to do with raw power but more with a programmers ability to make it work. NyallJodhan 2 different technologies. Not necessarily ‘more powerful’. The Wii U currently has more games 60fps than the PS4 or XBox1. It’s about time you fanboys realise the Wii U is not ‘so far behind’ as you like to believe. It is being PROVEN the power it has, by the frame rates of the games on it. Developers are struggling mightily to equate on the PS/XB. And there is NOTHING you can say otherwise about this. oontz “Wii U currently has more games 60fps than the PS4” No it doesn’t and it’s been proven that it doesn’t. “It’s about time you fanboys realise the Wii U is not ‘so far behind’ as you like to believe.” I’m not a fanboy and never claimed the wiiu was far behind. But thanks for pigeon holeing me into that category of people. “It is being PROVEN the power it has, by the frame rates of the games on it.” I’m not sure what you’re suggesting but as an owner of multiple next gen machines. The games on wiiu can hit those numbers because they aren’t on the same level of visual fidelity. Unless you’re seriously trying to compare a game like DKC-TF or SM3DW to say Killzone SF or Infamous SS. If so then there is no comparison. Yes nintendo games look great for the art design they’re going for, but they aren’t on the same graphical level as Exclusive PS4 games. SM3DW would run flawlessly (or better) on PS4, Infamous wouldn’t run well at all on the wiiu. That’s the hard truth. Doesn’t change my love for games though, I just buy all the systems. It’s a hobby and an addiction. Rinslowe “I’d rather 1080p at 30FPS than 720p at 60FPS” Depends entirely on the game… But more often than not 720p 60fps with hardware upscaling is the better trade-off IMO. For a game like Kart where the resolution is confirmed to be 1080p and 60fps, well that’s just gravy really… If something had to give there though. Better it was the native resolution than the framerate. oontz “But more often than not 720p 60fps with hardware upscaling is the better trade-off IMO.” For me I’m different. I’d prefer a native resolution of 1080p over an upscaled image with noticeable artifacts. But it is a matter of opinion. “For a game like Kart where the resolution is confirmed to be 1080p and 60fps, well that’s just gravy really” I agree, best of both worlds. NyallJodhan But you’re not talking native coding. So far all we’ve seen are ports with coding for the x86 technology. When we see ‘visual fidelity’ being coded for the Wii U’s PowerPC from the ground up, then perhaps we can judge what is and what’s not, eh? oontz “When we see ‘visual fidelity’ being coded for the Wii U’s PowerPC from the ground up, then perhaps we can judge what is and what’s not, eh?” Is that not what Nintendo has been doing with their first party titles? NyallJodhan With all the arguments about different art styles, for example, DKTC vs Titanfall, I would suggest not. Especially when this is the argument about ‘visual fidelity’ and the defense put up as to why DKTC can achieve 60fps. oontz So you can honestly say DKC-TF and Infamous require the same resources and have the same visual fidelity? Come on… one is a 2d side scrolling plat former (with some 3d elements) The other is a massive interactive 3d world. Is there really any question as to why one can hit those numbers and the other cannot? NyallJodhan Ummm…I believe you asked if that is what Nintendo are doing. I said not, and I said I wish someone would do so above. Create a 3D world with ‘visual fidelity’ ground up for the Wii U. Then we can test the performance, eh? oontz ” It is being PROVEN the power it has” Is what you said. Which is false. NyallJodhan Wait man, all them games hitting 60fps, and you claiming falsehood?! Now you are sounding delusional. I’m out. LunarNinja The Wii U has the power to provide all on screen objects with 1080p @ 60fps. You guys shouldn’t sweat it at all. Ultrasyd Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, New Super Mario Bros U are 720p if I’m not wrong … Arthur Jarret You’re not wrong. 1080p 60 FPS games are: Rayman Legends Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (which can drop frames as low as 38FPS) 1080p 30FPS games are: Zelda windwaker HD 720p 60FPS games are: New Super Mario Bros U Super mario 3D world Wonderful 101 Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Nintendo land Sonic lost world Ninja gaiden razor’s edge (with heavy framerate drops) Call of Duty Black ops 2 (640p upscaled with heavy framerate drops) 720P 30FPS games are: Pikmin 3 ZombiU Assassin’s creed 3 Batman Arkham City Need for speed most wanted U (704P upscaled) Don’t know the res/frame info of any other titles, though. Marks Pikmin 3 is 720p 60fps! Arthur Jarret Oh, it’s 60FPS? Hm, I wonder if it’s 60FPS in multiplayer too. NyallJodhan Thanks for this. ZombiU is awesome looking to me. So I’m satisfied then since it is ‘only’ 720p 30fps. Anything better would just look better. Arthur Jarret I loved how AC3 looked. Despite falling through rocks and seeing horses on roofs. It depends on anti-aliasing used on 1080p displays, though. LunarNinja Gotta hand it to ya’, made that mistake. However, I really wish we could get more tech tidbits from Sakurai on the Wii U version. Bob Greenfield So just as a disclaimer, the stream wasn’t running at 60 fps when they pointed out the fighters running at 60 fps compared to the characters running at 30. Youtube videos are capped at 30. If you need a comparison of 30 fps vs 60 fps, this is a good example (I recommend you watch it on a computer): DMC Trailer 30 fps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUfp7L… DMC Trailer 60 fps (select HQ): http://gamersyde.com/stream_devil_may… nWo4liFe Lmao… I love how the Internet/ConsoleWarFanBoys have created this sense of “IF ITS NOT 60FPS IT SUCKS!” mentality. I don’t recall ever discussing that shit when I played games with friends. It was about “is it fun, or not?”. Same shit as 1080p and 720p. I have a 65″ HDtv and I could barely notice the difference with some games; specially if I’m having a good time playing the damn game. oontz “Same shit as 1080p and 720p. I have a 65″ HDtv and I could barely notice the difference” If you can’t notice the difference between native 720p and native 1080p on a 65″ HD Display then you may want to have your eyes checked. nWo4liFe Do you know what barely means? If it’s a huge difference, I go to my TV settings and make the picture smaller. It’s not that big of a difference. It’s not like we are comparing 480p to those other two, or 4k. oontz “Do you know what barely means?” Yes… do you? Barely: Adverb only just; scarcely; no more than; almost not Again if you barely notice a difference between 720p and 1080p than you may want to have your eyes checked. That’s a massive size difference in resolution. Here is a handy graph. http://www.geek.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/size.png nWo4liFe I just don’t sit there and look for these details. I can barely tell the difference because I’m more focused on gameplay. I’m sure there’s a slight difference when I’m playing RE:Revelations on my Wii U compared to my PC version, but I didn’t see it at all. I enjoyed the Wii U version more because it was fun… I didn’t play the PC version as much because it didn’t do for me what the Wii U version did; While others would rather play the PC version because they noticed the graphical differences. It’s stupid to me. That’s all. You don’t have to go out of your way to try and prove that there’s indeed a difference, and that I should get my eyes checked? Lol I’m clearly stating my reasons why I don’t see much of a difference between the two, and that is all. oontz Fair enough, if you don’t see a difference then you will save more money on displays down the road. Jon I am pretty sure it is already expect the Wii U version will be 60 FPS C.S. Bailey Sounds impressive for the 3DS, especially since it will be the same in 3D or not. I got the kid a 2DS, so I’ll probably take the time to watch side by side. husky818yahoocom Im sure The U can handle it with no problem and im also pretty sure that a while back it was said it will be running in 1080p and 60fps. He also states that this is an incredible feat for the 3ds and that the engine running the game is very efficient . Arthur Jarret Good. 3D is awesome. I pity the fools that bought a 2DS. John Already announced that it runs at 60fps on wiiu, why announce that again? Enumerating Wishes Not running 60 fps would be breaking tradition since the series ALWAYS ran at 60 (albeit the occasional frame rate drops.) I think the real issue is whether they’re going to keep the native 1080p resolution. MerryBlind . Yeah, I’m not worrying about the frame rate at all, I’m sure it will be a steady 60fps. I’m curious to see if they’ll actually manage to render the game at 1080p though. Mwgly I was a bit disapointed that they did not mention that, even if they may have said that it would on 60fps some time ago.
