In the current dry season of games until Nintendo releases some of the more anticipated titles, independent developers have kept the Wii U eShop going strong with new releases. Zen Pinball 2 and Toki Tori 2 are just two of the titles that will be available to gamers soon and if Yacht Club Games’ Kickstarter is successful, it’s likely we could see Shovel Knight available in the eShop, too.

Shovel Knight is a throwback to 8-bit and 16-bit gaming, where side-scrolling platformers with bosses at the end of the levels, such as Sonic and Mega Men reigned supreme. The game features all new original characters and bosses, superb artwork, and a chiptune soundtrack that’s pretty great, too. The Kickstarter is currently on path for success, sitting at $26k of $75k needed with only 26 days to go.

If you’re interested in seeing the game released on Nintendo’s platforms, consider pledging to help them out. The Kickstarter is doing regular updates to reveal the bosses that will be in the game once it’s released, so there’s plenty to keep track of if you’re interested.

If you go to their kickstarter page it looks like a fun game. At the bottom of the kickstarter page there is another game shown that looks like it would be a Wii U exclusive and they’re not asking for as much money ($6000)

    • Fred

So is anyone here actually going to contribute so that they get the funding and make the game?

      • Guest

I went and contribute $10..not much but something

        • Fred

It’s too bad you didn’t donate $15 you would have gotten a code to download the game free on your Wii U or 3DS!!!

    • Fred

They just updated their site, they are officially coming to the Wii U and it now says, “Wii U and 3DS game codes will be made available to everyone who pledges $15 or more. Upon release, you can choose (1) which version of the game you prefer: Windows PC, Wii U, or 3DS!”

  • Laud

I see huge influences from Megaman but the one thing I really hope they can do is provide a kick ass soundtrack. The song I heard (Which will be the song of the level they are showing at PAX) is decent but it’s no Intro stage or Chilled Penguin.

    • Michael Jurado

omg yes! people need to make more games like mega man X …. screw it lets just make more mega man X games lol

    • Metal_Man_v2

I don’t know much about this game. Do you get powers from bosses? That was one of my favorite things from Mega Man.

  • Ultranist

Don’t forget to thumbs up it on greenlight

  • Am I the only one who wants that little guy in Smash Bros U !? 😀

I’m not really into those Bit-Games (I’m too younf to know them I think…), but the idea is awesome and I would definitely support Yacht if they bring it to WiiU ^.^

    • RyuNoHadouken

you are not!! you just currently play 256-bit games…when I was a kid, I had an atari, then the 8-bit NES.

  • D.M.T

Those were the good ol’days. When games were BETTER and graphics DIDN’T MATTER. Today’s generation sucks donkey cock. It’s all about how games look now. People buy games now because they were impressed by the graphics. Games get bad reviews more often now because developers are focusing too much on visuals. Oh and nowadays you spend more money on games because every game gets DLC content now. I miss the days when everything was already included in the game, you just payed 60 bucks or whatever and that’s it.

Things will only get worse. If you thought that the 7th Gen sucked then the 8th gen and 9th Gen will be worse. I really doubt I will buy another console ever again. I’ll keep my Wii U until it dies and than I’ll move on from video games because gamers are gonna get worse too. Gamers no longer want to have fun together, it’s all a damn competition and war these days. I blame online gaming for this. Gamers don’t really know what it’s like to invite friends to your house to play. Playing with total strangers and insult them is the new trend. I’ve never played online and I’m not planning to play with strangers.

I’m sorry for this rant, I had to get it out of my system. I feel better now 😛

    • Robyn Hermann

My seven year old likes to play my original NES games vs. current games, he finds them harder.

    • Nintenjoe82

I kind of agree that those were the good old days, especially when a dev would be massively limited and just come up with one crazy idea or character and make a whole game out of it. Now there seem to be too many people making pretentious interactive movies instead of games. The makers of The Last of Us and Tomb Raider were promoting their new games by talking up the ‘unrivalled naivety’ and the ‘whole new level of vulnerability not seen before in Lara Croft’.

People thought graphics mattered just as much back then. I remember the Mega Drive boys telling me their ‘realistic’ Mortal Kombat graphics were better than my SNES Street Figher 2’s and years later I told them to suck my Donkey Kong Country. If only I could have shown them the future where all the games we thought had improved upon stuff like Mario and Street Fighter were actually going to age horribly in comparison.

Anyway, Nintendo will carry on making fun games as long as Miyamoto is alive so don’t worry about what 9th gen CoD is going to be like. We all know it will be shit compared to Goldeneye

      • Fred

But is Miyamoto going to be around for that much longer? Won’t he retire at some point? If he did the original Donkey Kong then he’s got to be close to retiring right? That’s what I’m worried about.

        • Nintenjoe82

          he’s a demi-god and therefore immortal

    • Revolution5268

      well said

    • Metal_Man_v2

“When games were BETTER and graphics DIDN’T MATTER.”

People still were impressed when graphics went from 8bit to 16bit and so forth. Graphics have always been important in video games as a means to provide imersion.

As for what time period games were better, I respect your opinion but disagree with it. Older games are more limited in what they could do, and are generally inferior in every way. Story, gameplay, graphics, length, etc. I do think that retro games have a special charm about them, but to say they are better than games nowadays seems like a nostalgia trip to me. “/

      • Guest

The good old days when games took years to get ported and cost equivalent of £100 in today’s money.

      • D.M.T

Dude, games back then were harder than today’s games because the focus was on the gameplay, not the visuals. Graphics did matter but not nearly as much as it matters today.

In the 90’s people bought games that they thought were fun, nowadays people see a game with great graphics and buy it because it looks good. They think that great graphics means great game.

Old games from the 90’s and early 2000’s are NOT inferior when it comes to gameplay which is why I say they are better. They were harder but at the same time simpler. You had less buttons on the controllers but the game was hard to beat. it’s not nostalgia, that’s how I feel. The last great generation was the 6th generation.

        • Metal_Man_v2

“back then were harder than today’s games because the focus was on the gameplay, not the visuals.”

No, they were made harder because the games could not be made as long. Developers took time to polish graphics and gameplay the best that they could. But both of these elements are largely outclassed by more modern games. For example, you can’t do half of the things in the original Zelda that you can do in Skyward Sword, and Skyward Sword also has better graphics.

It’s fine that you prefer retro games though, I still play retro games on occasion too. It’s your opinion on what you like and don’t like, so don’t let my opinion bother you too much.

          • D.M.T

Nah…I still believe that graphics wasn’t nearly as important as it is now and the reason for that is that gamers have changed. Gamers demand great graphics these days. They won’t buy a game with poor graphics that is probably better than Crysis 3, Tomb Raider etc.

Just because you can do more things now doesn’t mean the gameplay is better, it just means the game is longer and the story is better/deeper.

When I’m playing a game, I ask myself how much fun I’m having with it. Back in the day I played video games more often because they were FUN, now I play video games only when I’m bored or lazy. My eyes are entertained by the graphics by my mind is not having too much fun anymore.

          • Metal_Man_v2

I’m having a hard time understanding this bit, so forgive me.

“Just because you can do more things now doesn’t mean the gameplay is better, it just means the game is longer and the story is better/deeper.”

The amount of things you can do in a game and how it plays IS the gameplay. What you can do in the game has nothing to do with the story or it’s length.

          • D.M.T

i have no problem explaining myself as long as you’re mature and respectful. Let me explain.

To me, how you play the game is more important than the amount of things you can do. it doesn’t matter to me if you can’t do much, i just wanna know if I’m having fun, that’s it.

“What you can do in the game has nothing to do with the story or it’s length.”

You contradicted yourself. First you said that the things you can do in the game makes the game longer and now you’re saying that it has nothing to do with it’s length. I’m confused.

          • Metal_Man_v2

I stated that older games were made harder because they couldn’t be made as long, and that old games are not as long as new games, not that length was affected by what you could do. Sorry if I put that in a confusing way.

I may have misunderstood you also. Fun is obviously the single most important thing in any game, and if you find older games to be more fun than that’s perfectly acceptable. It seemed to me that at first you were implying that games were made better in the past, and that newer games were of lesser quality and only focused on graphics.

But hey, nothing wrong with having a discussion anyway right? It’s probably more entertaining to the readers than the “WII U IS DOOMED” comments some people post.

          • D.M.T

Yeah you misunderstood me. They are not from less quality, it’s just that graphics is more important now then it should be. How many people ignored the Wii just because it’s under powered? A lot of them. I never bought a Wii because I don’t like the Wii Remote. I don’t like how you play video games on the Wii. It’s not because of graphics.

Gameplay still matters of course but there are a lot of games out there where the graphics is better than the gameplay. I rather have a game with better gameplay. Graphics should never be more important or equally important. It should be second, after gameplay.

          • Michael Jurado

I get nintendawg he wants what i want super hardcore games that challenge you to the point where they make you rage quit examples contra III gradius III gradius II ninja gaiden I, II, III any variation of these games was like picking your poison lol. he very much like my self miss this difficulty of video games i’m sure if i said todays gamers are pansy’s he would agree simply because they have games like god of war where its mash the attack button then wait for kratos to dish out his combo follow it by pressing 1 button maybe a 2nd and perhaps a 3rd to finish off the enemy, having a bagillion hit points and even if you do get hit you dont die even if you do get hit the enemies drop health so frequently it doesnt matter all i’m saying is todays gamers don’t really know how to game 😛

          • D.M.T

            Lol you understand 🙂

        • dgallo911

Actually, they were made harder so you would pump more quarters into the machine at the arcades..

      • dgallo911

I agree with ya, except im going to say anyone that thinks gaming was better in previous gens than it is today is a dickhead

    • Super Buu

As hard as as this is to swallow, I’ll have to agree with you. 8th gen will be worse than the past gen if everything I’ve heard is true. Today, big developers can get away by making long tech demos (Crysis 3). What is worse is that online multiplayer is slowly becoming an obligation. I have nothing against online multiplayer games but as a single player gamer, this is looking pretty bad and it’s looking bad for local multiplayer too. I never thought I would say this but I might just give up gaming as a whole and find a new favorite hobby. Heck, I even wanted the gaming industry to make a few steps back in the graphical department, that way we would get rid of the annoying graphics whores.

    • WiiUltra

Don’t blame online gaming, just blame the internet in general. Online gaming is great in many games. For example, Monster Hunter 3 U expands the entire game online. It also gives it infinite replayability in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I also loved games when the internet wasn’t around and you had to find everything yourself the hard way. But oh man there were SO many rumors about things that were supposably in the game if you do such and such. Haha ya..

    • Michael Jurado

his rant is 100% correct I blame all these damn FPS >__<

  • RyuNoHadouken

saw this the other day…Day one purchase for me

  • Michael Jurado

“Shovel Knight is a throwback to 8-bit and 16-bit gaming” and I was sold 🙂

  • Metal_Man_v2

Am I the only one who thinks the cartoon knight picture, as seen on the home page of Wii U daily for this article, looks like a modified version of the knights from Zelda the Wind Waker and it’s sequels?

    • Ibi Salmon

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought that.

  • wober2

Another Castle also looks good I am a backer I hope it makes $30k so it can get weather systems 🙂

  • Superstick98

It’s great to see more good indie companies step up and try to support Wii U! I really wasn’t expecting this. I hope these guys reach their kickstarter goal because It would be awesome to play their game. Go for it guys!

  • The music is so fucking awesome!!

  • Eli Valentin Villanueva

More fun games like this, it looks like an interesting option, hope to see it finished and not delayed as Rayman or cancel as megaman :/

  • DemonRoach

Well, it’s graphics would fit in on the Wii U.

  • …They’ve got Jake “Virt” Kaufman on their soundtrack?! F**%&! Someone beat me to it!

Oh, well. I’m glad that if someone got to it first, it was these guys. This game looks awesome!
