WayForward has been behind some of the biggest licensed titles of the past few years, including DuckTales: Remastered, Adventure Time, and Contra 4. Now the team wants your help creating a new game with an original character creation that will be coming to the Wii U.

Players will take control of Shantae, a half-genie hybrid protagonist that uses a variety of moves, including a hair whip with her ponytail and belly dancing to transform into other creatures. The game sounds very interesting for platformer fans, though it’s not the first Shantae game we’ve seen from WayForward. The character was originally featured in a game on the Game Boy Color in 2002 called Shantae and just like WayForward’s more recent projects, this will be a revival of an old character in a new setting with new gameplay mechanics.

If you’re interested in learning more, check out the Kickstarter here. Currently the team is hoping to raise $400,000 and have around $25,000 of that goal.

  • Satoru Iwata

We will come to their rescue.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Great, another sidescrolling platformer, just what Wii U needs…

    • Josiah Parsons

Yeah, I guess you’re right. This one looks beautiful and well done (the music is epic!) but less interesting than, say, Switch Force.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Actually it DOES looking good. But that doesnt change the fact that its gone inflation in this type of games at Wii U.

        • ScrewAttack

They’re a lot easier for Indies to make than, say, a Hat in Time or games along that line. Not surprised so many are bursting onto the scene with platformers to start. Hopefully they expand onwards and upwards from there.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, but Nintendo kind of took it that direction too. NSMBU, NSLU, DKCRF. I think its a bit to much now.

          • ScrewAttack

I like the NSMB series as the platforming is really damn smooth, but yeah adding DKC games on top of that just feels superfluous and (especially) a waste of Retro’s time. There won’t be a NSMB title for a while now, they’re usually not that often- we’ve just had a clump together which is kind’ve bad timing- but there should be a rest from that now. Still wish DKC wasn’t taking up a christmas slot….

          • Magnus Eriksson

I am actuall more fond of DKC-games than NSMBU so Ill pick it up. But as you say, I would have prefered to see something else from Retro. Metroid range very high on that list. I think Metroid could do REALLY cool stuff with the pad. Think about it, – Steering missiles (like the bug in Zelda SS), – scanning device, -maps, -weapons panel, – perspectives…

I had high hopes for Wii U when I saw Zombi U at first, but after that there was not that many exciting things. Fun, yes, but not awesome.

          • ScrewAttack

It’s early days, I’ve not known many first years for consoles that were awesome throughout. If any, hard to say, I’m starting to forget the earlier ones.

          • Magnus Eriksson

SNES was pretty good in the beginning. NES too compared to earlier stuff. N64 was kind of bad, opening with (correct me if Im wrong) Pilotwings, Star Wars 64 and Super Mario 64. Three very good games, but very few. Then it got Turok a while later, and Wave Racer, also good games. But it took like a year or so before we saw Zelda OoT. Playstation had some good games in the beginning if Im correct, the same goes for PS2 (I think).

          • ScrewAttack

The problem is people have become more entitled and more impatient as time goes on. Bitching that games aren’t coming out thick and fast enough. This shit doesn’t get made over a long weekend!

I’ve spent plenty of time waiting for that next awesome title, that next Legend of Zelda, or Paper Mario (we NEED one for Wii U so bad), that next Star Wars game….people need to learn a little patience. Good things come to he who waits, and those that can’t show just how immature they are.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Actually its a bit more than little patience. Compare it to the other devices on the market. There is STILL coming great games for PS3 and XB360. Wii had its last great title in 2011, thats Zelda SS, a delayed title. Wii U didnt have one great yet (yes some good, but not great) and we are soon at the end of 2013.

          • Arthur Jarret

Wonderful one-oh-one is wonder… erm, awesome.
            I really recommend it!

          • Magnus Eriksson

I will pick that up. I think it looks very good. πŸ™‚

          • The Clockwork Being

By the way what happened to a hat in time. They reach their Wii U and Steam goal.

          • ScrewAttack

Not entirely sure, but I’ll ask about.

EDIT: I will add, Magnus, that the PS3 and 360 didn’t do much better or have any great titles in their first years either. Hell, PS3 has only stopped struggling in recent years. All three need to be held to the same standard, not a different set for Nintendo like so many are fond of using. Patience my friend.

          • The Clockwork Being

PS3 made profit in the early 2012. Before that Sony was just losing money.

      • Guest

How do you tell them all apart?

    • jay

Can’t have too much of a good thing, Shantae is amazing don’t write it off as a cheesy 2D platformer. It’s actually really good.

      85 on Metacritic.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Oh yes you can. New Super Mario Bros series is a very good example of this.

    • Veries Seals

I dont really understand the complaining. All games fit into a Genre. There are plenty of 2D and 3D platformers, 1st person shooters, action adventure, rpgs. So are we going to begin saying oh great, just what the Wii U needs on all of these other area’s? I am glad that We have these great games coming and that indie and major developers are wanting to put their content on our system. 1st there was a small drought now we are getting several games a month. Are we being just a little negative here? I myself is excited about Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams. I shall make that purchase tomorrow if it comes to Nintendo E-shop as todays article suggest.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Get real. Why do you think Nintendo sales are low? Too few games with too little diversity.

        • Veries Seals

I am always real. Just like your always here on the Wii U site. You know just as well as everyone else that Nintendo provides what other game makers do not. Secondly I like the other tow manufactures as well but lets be honest, the Wii U has more interesting news than the PS4 or XBox One, so everyone comes here to express themselves. Thirdly if Nintendo does not pave the way the other two don’t move. Always has been that way, always will be. Oh, and lastly no one is making you to buy the game anyways, so if you don’t like it don’t buy it, and that for sure. IS THAT REAL ENOUGH FOR YOU?

    • Michael DeVore

It’s a multi-platform game. So it’s another side-scrolling platformer, just what Steam, XBox One, PS4, 360, PS3, and the Wii U needs. I guess you’re so hung up on it being a 2D platformer that you couldn’t see it as being from a company that rarely gets to make its own characters from a company that mostly makes 2D platformers. Oh well.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Check up the word diversity in a lexicon.

    • Elitepwnsface

Can’t agree with you more on this one.

    • Guest

      just die already

      • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, yeah. I get it. You want this place to be cheering crowd of worshippers with one single mindset. No, that wont happen. Better if people like you leave the place. It would be the best thing for the sake of good discussion.

        • Veries Seals

Its not that we don’t like to debate, you just have a flaming attitude while doing it. There are ways to debate and express yourself while also respecting the oppositions opinion. You have a steam roller debate style and you try to roll over everyone with your opinion. Well guess what, there are actually people who love the Wii U and its current titles and titles to come. The console just came out less than a year ago and you want it to have an over saturated library like the PS3 and 360. Answer me this, how many PS3 or XBox 360 games did you buy out of the over saturated library that they have? I bet most people including you don’t have 50 out of the 300 plus games they have a piece. Which shows that you would not buy most of them anyways, even if they were available. Next how many of those games in those over saturated game libraries are even worth buying for the PS3 or XBox 360? Be honest! And your not talking to someone how does not own both systems. I have bought 2 PS3’s and 3 XBox 360’s. Oh, my bad and I should have said GET REAL!

        • Guest

No, i just wish you’d die. you’re a fucking troll and you should be slain accordingly.
you do nothing but talk shit.
why do you even come to Wii U Daily other than to troll hard and fail hard?!

    ;_;7 Salute the Shantae

  • Gecko Altair

The most terrible thing happened to me today. I called Gamestop to see if they had any more WindWaker HD Collectors editions left and they said yes. I drove to the store an hour later and asked the lady at the counter if i could preorder it. She typed it in and told me that it is completely gone from the computer which means that every copy in the world has already been taken πŸ™ ahhhhhhh, depression.

  • Arthur Jarret

It’s not a revival… Shantae is a running series with part 2 on DSi and part 3 coming soon on 3DS – this will be the third sequel to a game that is receiving the second sequel this year.

  • Andrew W Garttmeyer

Link to kickstarter does not work…
