Today Nintendo announced the return of Captain Falcon to Super Smash Bros., as well as two new characters from the Fire Emblem series joining the roster. Aside from that however, in Sakurai’s daily Miiverse post in the Super Smash Bros. community, he posted a screenshot of Ubisoft’s Rayman and stated that Ubisoft’s designers offered Nintendo a unique character model for the character to be included in the game.

This is a surprise considering the support the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS have been getting from Ubisoft as of late, as Watch Dogs is still delayed with no release date in site and several of Ubisoft’s upcoming games like Assassin’s Creed are skipping the Wii U this fall. Here’s what Sakurai had to say about the inclusion of Rayman as a trophy in Super Smash Bros.

“In order to make Rayman’s trophy, we asked Ubisoft to share their references. We were expecting to receive 2D drawing references for Rayman, but to our surprise, they sent us data of a brand new 3D model that they rendered for this game!! And that was how this trophy was created. It takes a lot of work creating each model, so it’s wonderful that the creators contributed their own efforts!!”

That was nice of Ubisoft to save the team a bit of work and provide a unique model. What do you think of the inclusion of Rayman as a trophy? Do you think he fits the game and deserved to be included? Let us know in the comments!

  • Pikachief

    Trophy =/= Assist Trophy

  • Henry Hotspur

    Not an assist trophy.

  • Kobe

Since it happened with Little Mac, I hope this trophy turns into a character next Smash

    • Merry_Blind

      That would be great.

    • LevenThumps

The difference is that Little Mac was an assist trophy, and Rayman is just a trophy (as of right now).

      • FatMasterBass

That and the bigger difference; Little mac is a NINTENDO character.
        Rayman is not.

        • Joseph Oliveira

So what? Even Nintendo Characters is hard to be put in a game too.

          • FatMasterBass

Please don’t comment if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

        • 00EpicGamer00

Is Snake a Nintendo character? Is Pacman a Nintendo character? Is Sonic a Nintendo character? Is Megaman a Nintendo character? There’s LOTS of characters in the Smash Bros. franchise that aren’t Nintendo characters. So, your reasoning that Rayman can’t be in Smash Bros. because he’s not made by Nintendo, is just dumb.

          • FatMasterBass

Snake got in because Sakurai and Kojima are buddies. Pac, Mega and Sonic all got in because they’re gaming LEGENDS.

Rayman is not. If you think he’s on the same tier as them you’re beyound delusional.

“There’s LOTS of characters in the Smash Bros. franchise that aren’t Nintendo characters.”

Bahahaha, no there isn’t. There are four of them. Four is not a lot. And as I mentioned earlier one of those four was only in as a favor to Kojima, while the other three are as old and iconic as Mario. Rayman isn’t anywhere near them.

“So, your reasoning that Rayman can’t be in Smash Bros. because he’s not made by Nintendo, is just dumb.”

No it’s not. You just fail to pay attention to details. There’s a HUGE difference between Sonic and Rayman. Ask a bunch of gamers who either character is and they’ll all know who Sonic and Pac Man and Mega Man are. Ask that same group who Rayman is and 9/10 will respond with “who?”

          • 00EpicGamer00

I’m sensing allot of rage, lol. Why are you so angry with Rayman? Hmmmm? Also the reasoning for Snake being in Smash Bros. is very stupid (I know it’s true, but I think it’s rediculious). Why should Sakurai put a character in, all because he’s “friends” with the creator? That makes no sense. Anyway, I’m pretty sure Rayman will make it into the next Smash Bros. as a playable character. No need to get your little panties in a bunch. Rayman is a great video game icon. He was apart of allot of people’s childhoods.

Oh, and if you’re going to respond, please respond in a timely manner. Not 5 days after the original comment was posted. Sheesh.

          • FatMasterBass

I stopped reading after the first sentence. You’re obviously a defensive little child who’s pretending I’m “mad” because you think it makes you right.
But just in case you come running back to type another massive comment I won’t read, I’ll make this as simple as I possibly can.

There’s no rage here, kiddo. Only cold, hard facts. I love Rayman, but he’s not big enough for Smash. Simple as that.
Smash Bros. is for NINTENDO CHARACTERS. If someone is a Nintendo character, they need nothing to get in other than Sakurai thinking they’d be interesting.
If you’re NOT a Nintendo character, it takes a LOT more than a cult following. Sonic, Pac and Mega are all up there with Mario as some of the most legendary gaming icons ever. That’s the only reason they’re in despite not being Nintendo.
Even SNAKE isn’t big enough, he was only in as a favor to Kojima.

Rayman being in won’t happen, and should not happen. It’s common sense. If you lack this common sense then don’t get mad at me.
Even if they wanted more third-party reps there are plenty more that would be in before Rayman, like Simon Belmont.

I hope you learned something from this, young one.

  • Nookling

    He isn’t an assist. -_-

  • Ducked

Wow that’s nice! Not as big as a playable character, but still pretty big for the game.

  • Dallas Gooch

    I think Ashley needs a vacation…

    • I think you’re right.

      • Dallas Gooch

I feel like you have been the only person writing any of these articles for a while…you need a break haha.

    • Ducked

      I could fill in ;D

      • Dallas Gooch

You’re here in the comments enough so I’m sure you could xD

  • Re-Master

Just a trophy, but I’m worried it’s becoming too third party.

    • Pikachief

its just a trophy. They could have trophies for Spore and Viva Pinata for all I care. 😛

  • Jeffery02

It’s funny. I don’t think he fits, but I’m happy to see him included. The Nintendoverse is already huge, but all of these extras from other developers is making this seem like the largest Smash Bros. yet! This isn’t just Nintendo as a company, but also starting to seem like the NES and beyond. Anyone with a good time on a Nintendo system period seems to be jumping into this one.

  • bistricky

Well, well ….. isn’t that interesting ….. guess Ubisoft is sitting on Rayman Legend 2 for the Wii U.

    • Ducked

I hope that secret Ubiosoft game is a ZombiU sequel.

      • WiiUisgaming

        Me too

      • The Clockwork Being

They did express their desire to make a sequel.

      • Dáibhí wotshissurname

They have one game fully complete but won’t release it until Wii U sales pickup. I’ll bet my bottom dollar it’s the Ghost Recon Phantoms port they promised

  • CydeFxt

Is this bittersweet to Ubisoft? Or is it just sweet? I ask this because other 3rd party characters are playable.

    • FatMasterBass

The other 3rd party characters are incredibly legendary gaming icons. Rayman is not.

  • Even Rayman looks like he knows he doesn’t belong.

    • FatMasterBass

Looks more like he’s on LSD to me.

      • Julianx2rl

Block his eyes with your finger and imagine he has fully opened eyes like origins/legends… pretty different impression doesn’t it? i supose this is some sort of beta pose or something, that explains that opened left eye…

    • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

      Rayman, a game about nothing

      • BIG Franky

ah yes…. similar to Mario games….

      • Emu

        Gameplay > Story

    • Dáibhí wotshissurname

      Why does he look stoned

  • therealruben1

So this is why Smash Bros for the 3DS was delayed

    • The Clockwork Being

      Well played.

  • Lusunup

such a deceiving move in Sakurai’s hands!
He didn’t say anything in specfic to the trophy so people can start panicing, I think he enjoys Pic Of Day more than you’re average user and be uses it to his advantage xD

  • Sdudyoy

A bit random, but Rayman is one of my favorite video game characters, when I was a kid, the only games I would play where Sonic, mainly out of stubbornness, Rayman was the first game other than Sonic that I loved!

    • Ducked

The original three Sonic games were my favorite as a child too. Crash Bandicoot as well.

      • Sdudyoy

The only consoles I had as a kid where a Genesis, a Saturn and a Dreamcast, but I played Spyro on my cousins PS1 and some other PS1 games, I loved the Pokemon show and cards, but I didn’t even know there where games, so we got a Hey you Pikachu themed N64 for Christmas one, but the only two games we got on it where Hey you Pikachu and Rayman 2, I’m mad at myself, I wish we could have gotten games like Zelda OOT or SM64, but the good thing is I got to experience those games when I was older.

        • Ducked

I had a Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and a PS1. I actually didn’t get a N64 until 2004. I loved the Spyro games! It’s probably best to play them when your older. Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask were very difficult games.

      • Epicstuf

        No DLC, ever, dumbass.

  • TheyCallHimBigAl

I like how Smash Bros. is becoming a sort of platform to honor video game history, like a museum where you can fight with the exhibits.

    • Flintinator

      You’re totally right!

    • The Clockwork Being

Thats a great way to look at it. A lot of developers would be honored to have their characters in the game.

      • TheyCallHimBigAl

Absolutely, and I’m sure the free advertising doesn’t hurt either. I know I never would have known about Fire Emblem or the Mother series if Smash hadn’t piqued my curiosity.

  • Mario

Rayman? But why? …Sakurai, are you foreshadowing a possible inclusion of Rayman in a future installment of SSB on the next Nintendo console? -_-

    • FatMasterBass

No he’s not. Why do people think every little thing he does involves playable characters?

      • Steelseries Sensei

@fatmasterbass:disqus I don’t think you know anything about Sakuri. He plays mind games like a Earthbound(Mother) Trucker.
As he will reveal something and in turn could of a Assist Trophy, Playable Character, or stage — or even a upcoming hint of something else.

        • Mario

        • FatMasterBass

“I don’t think you know anything about Sakuri.”

I know FAR more than you do.

“As he will reveal something and in turn could of a Assist Trophy, Playable Character, or stage — or even a upcoming hint of something else.”

He already told us what he is. He’s a trophy. They wouldn’t ask Ubisoft for a reference and then be surprised by a 3D model if he was anything but. Stop calling out other peoples’ understanding of Sakurai when you yourself don’t even understand game development.
The roster was decided on day one, they wouldn’t need a reference from ubisoft this late in development, and modeling/animating even assist trophies takes a LOT of time and work.

  • PS4WiiURocks

Who cares? Ubi is not in my good graces right now..Just another EA to me right now

  • Ezio for Smash confirmed.

    • Epicstuf

      Wait, WHAT?

      • You heard me

        • Epicstuf

    • And Batman.

      • does Ubisoft do batman games?

        • We’re doing Ubisoft games? I thought the criteria was “game series that were ported over once, then never again.” *Weak chuckle, laughter fades, awkward cough*

          • either or 😛 I was sticking with ubisoft though

  • JCdude

I hope Rayman does end up being a playable character, he’s definitely iconic enough to be on the roster. More importantly though, I hope this 3d model submitted Ubisoft submitted to Nintendo is a hint at a new 3D Rayman game.

    • FatMasterBass

“I hope Rayman does end up being a playable character”
      He won’t.

“he’s definitely iconic enough to be on the roster.”
      No he’s not.

      • BIG Franky

        sure he is…

        • FatMasterBass

          No, he’s not.

      • JCdude

There’s no point in arguing whether or not Rayman will be in the game, we’ll find out soon enough. I’m just saying, it’d be great if he was a playable character. He’d fit perfectly among the likes of Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, etc.

        • FatMasterBass

“There’s no point in arguing whether or not Rayman will be in the game, we’ll find out soon enough.”

What the hell are you talking about? We already found out the night Sakurai posted this picture. It’s not my fault you can’t read.

“He’d fit perfectly among the likes of Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, etc.”

No he wouldn’t. He’s a great character but he is NOT on the same level as the godfathers of modern gaming.

  • Phaz0n

Is this hinting at Rayman possibly being a playable character in the new games?! The 3D model is already made, so why not? It would be great for both Ubisoft and Nintendo.

    • FatMasterBass

No, the roster was decided on day one, they’re not going to just chuck him into the game on a whim because Ubi sent then a trophy model after the Smash team REQUESTED a reference for designing a trophy.

And Rayman isn’t anywhere near deserving of a spot on the roster. Only the biggest, most legendary of gaming icons make it in without being Nintendo. Snake only got in because Sakurai and Kojima are friends.

      • Mario

He meant the next game AFTER SSB4 genius. -_-

        • FatMasterBass

Nothing he said implied that, stop trying to backpedal on other peoples’ behalf.

  • LordiMcKill

And this is coming from a company who believes that the Wii U needs to sell more to get more games from them, failing to realise that the Xbone is quite far behind its two competition yet still wants to release games on it. In a years time, i can see the tables turning in the Wii U’s favour.

    • Cubester_64

Tables are already turning for the better with Nintendo.

      • tom

Since the release of Mario Kart 8( not to mention the sales) plus a great Presentation at E3, i feel very optimistic about the future of the WII U!

    • TheyCallHimBigAl

I think what the struggles of the XB1 show is that people won’t necessarily shell out $60 to watch a beautiful cgi movie with quick time events that plays itself (i.e. Ryse). Nintendo is banking on fun games with high reply value as opposed to a technical presentation of graphical prowess.

  • FlashFan207

I was sort of holding out hope that with the addition of all the 3rd party off-the-wall characters starring in this Smash, that Rayman would have been included as a playable character. Especially considering his game was the best on the Wii U of all the versions. Oh well, maybe next time.

  • Epicstuf

    Yeah, screw you, Ubisoft.

  • Dáibhí wotshissurname

Ubisoft, specifically the Montpelier branch, is awesome. Ubi Montpelier has made some of a favourote game, and in fact, the main man of the Rayman franchise, Michel Ancel, honurs Miyamoto as the king of games design. In short: I am liking those Ubisoft guys ritght now
