During the E3 Nintendo Direct is was announced that the Villager from Animal Crossing and Mega Man would be joining the roster for the next Super Smash Bros. game. Many were disappointed that Bayonetta was not included, but in an interview with Polygon, series director Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that the most grueling part of developing a Smash Bros. game is designing the game’s roster.

“The amount of stress I feel, it’s almost to the brink of death. Because it’s not just a matter of me personally thinking this character or that character is going to be in the game; it’s that we also have the game balance, animation, graphics and sound to think about in order to make that character fully fleshed out in that universe. I have to think about all of that when I go through this decision-making process.

Sakurai says he takes his job very seriously, as he knows long-time series fans will be disappointed if even one character is removed from the roster without a valid reason. For fans who think it is as simple as copying animations from the character’s games, as well as their movesets, Sakurai goes a bit further into detail on the incorporation of characters and what makes Super Smash Bros. so great because of its roster.

I always feel a bit bad for Sakurai any time he gives an interview, as he seems over-worked and under a lot of stress, especially with such a high profile title that could literally make or break Nintendo’s new console. The new Super Smash Bros. will be released on 3DS and Wii U in 2014.

  • Maybe next time Bayonetta.. Mega Man has been requested for many years so adding him this version was the right choice.

      • I’m confused?? You do not want to ever see Bayonetta in Smash Bros.??

        • SeroReviews

I don’t. EVER. She’d never fit in the roster

          • Norfair20X5

            Plus, Bayonetta SUUUCKS.

          • Arthur Jarret

You wish… she talks around it, but she’ll never do it

          • willweinert

Not wanting her in the game is one thing, but fat jokes are uncalled for.

  • Gabcormier

    I totally trust Sakurai’s gem. Can’t wait for 2014!

    • [000]

There is only one new character that I dream of being added: Non-Specific Action Figure

    • bizzy gie

      What’s a gem?

      • Arthur Jarret

Do you really, really want to know?

        It’s kind of dirty…

        • bizzy gie

          Lay it on me.

          • Arthur Jarret

            I really hate these…
Gem (moth), a moth of the family Geometridae

            or, a more shocking revelation:
Gem, a codename (intended for use internally) for the PlayStation Move controller

It might also just be Sakurai having an all-male development team:
Gender Empowerment Measure, indicator used by the United Nations as a measure of inequalities between men’s and women’s opportunities in a country

          • Gabcormier

      • Gabcormier
        • bizzy gie

I know what gem is. I meant in the context he was using.

          • jay

A Classic. A game that cannot be duplicated. A Gem.

          • bizzy gie

            Thank you.

  • DeedsGaming .

Wait, is there more to be announced?

    • $41809923

      • DeedsGaming .

good, I thought it was obvious but it seemed like everyone was upset over 3 characters…

    • Super Buu

      Kinda obvious, yes.

    • Baum 「ツリー」

Well they said there are as many characters as in Brawl. So we have still about 28 characters to be revealed 😉

(I think Brawl had 40, right? Not too sure about the exact number and too lazy to look it up 😀 )

      • Nookling

I believe Brawl had 35 counting all of the transformations. I would guess 40 or 42 characters is realistic for the new entry. I know people think there won’t be any more (numbers wise) but I don’t see him cutting very many. I feel like there will be at least 40.

    • Pikachief

I was gonna make some joke about how small that would make this roster but I’d honestly be alright with just these characters! I can’t wait for the other reveals! I’m still expecting Ness, Luigi, a princess or two, and another pokemon. Besides that I kinda hope they surprise me! 😀

      • Jeffery02

Don’t forget Yoshi, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff! That would at least give us the original 12 from Smash Bros on the N64. Those 12 are honestly all that I am expecting. Anyone else is extra.

  • Super Buu

I don’t mind as long as the game is good. Heck, I liked the Villager and feel like maining the guy! Take your time Sakurai.

    • Starfoxguy

      Same here.

  • Frankie

Why does everyone want Bayonetta? I would rather have all the characters from Brawl return with the addition of some, then have a lot of Brawl cut and add a third party character that has not been on a Nintendo platform. It does not matter if it is an exclusive, Bayonetta 1 was not even on the Wii.

    • Johny

well people want bayonetta, because bayonetta 2 is such an important game for wiiu that made ALOT of impact, even when its not even released. theres alot of fuss about it, and we are delighted to have that game on a nintendo platform, that many others desire

      • Frankie

But she has not been on the platform. There are many more deserving characters.

        • Johny

yes. there are tons of characters that would deserve to be in more than her.
sure she wasn’t originally on the platform..
but you gotta admit that Bayonetta 2 is a VERY important game that nintendo brought to the table. for many reasons.
it just serves a pretty high purpose and holds quite some potential wii u’s success if it does well (and turns out well)

        • Madmagican

Like Little Mac or some Golden Sun characters

    • nonbeliever323

Maybe by adding Bayonetta to the roster will promote her new game since Smash bros is a system seller? a cost effective way of advertizing?

  • Starfoxguy

I think we should give Sakurai a break with all these character suggestions. If the character we want is in, great, but if not, maybe next time.

    • Alex

I know everytime their is a new game trailer on Nintendo, the fans are like put this in Smash Bros, I am a Nintendo fan but I will never do that, and everybody should Sakurai a break.

    • Arthur Jarret

It’s fun speculating, though… I’m hoping for Layton, Lil’ Mac and Goemon playable and lolo and pacman as assist trophies

      • David Noble

No offense, but what’s Layton gonna do? He solves mysteries, but I’m pretty sure Link would beat him at a battle every time.

        • Arthur Jarret

You don’t remember the awesome sword battle at the end of Pandora’s box?

          • David Noble

Alright, I guess he’s not necessarily a bad choice, but they have characters from games practically made of swords, like Fire Emblem, but, come to think of it, there’s plenty more to Layton than I remembered right away. What would really be cool is if they made more character packs with DLC later on. There’s no telling the variety of characers they might add then.

    • Johny

exactly…either way its gonna be an amazing game. we should appreciate to have such game on a nintendo platform, and such talented minds behind it

    • Kriskura

Actually, he said in an interview that the character selection for the game phase was over, seems like he considered the requests earlier in the process.

  • Mario

Poor guy! It must be really hard to make these decisions.

  • Baum 「ツリー」

I honestly don’t care wich character will be in Smash Bros and wich won’t.
I also never understood all the ruckus about fan suggestions (since most of them are just plain stupid and in the end many “hardcore fans” won’t be satisfied with the roster anyway)

I mean…As long as we get the main characters (the ones from the original game) and any cool other ones I’m satisfied, because the gameplay will always be fantastic 😀

    • Jeffery02

Yeah. I am expecting them to announce Yoshi, Luigi, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, and Ness just because they have been in every Smash Bros game so far. The other 7 have already been announced. I am also hoping that they keep Mr. Game and Watch, R.O.B., and the Ice Climbers. My 2 characters are Luigi and Fox though, so I am not worried about the roster that ultimately ends up in SSB4. Regardless, I will get both copies and I will love every second of gameplay. If they released what they had now, then I’d probably be content.

  • mojack411

I agree that I feel bad for Sakurai whenever he gives interviews. There are plenty of high profile block-buster games out there but no man takes charge of his own like Sakurai does. It almost seems like he makes the entire game himself, which probably wouldn’t be terribly off from the truth.

I just hope his arm injury is healing up nicely. I definitely don’t want to see that acting up again.

  • Ducked

I want Mickey in Smash Bros!

    • dissapointed

      wooow, no

      • Ducked

I was going to reply, but then I realized it was just a troll

    • Jeffery02

Epic Mickey or Keyblade Master Mickey?

      • Ducked

I’d prefer Keyblade Mickey, but it probably be Epic Mickey since that started with Nintendo.

  • mike

DId he ever outright say BAyonetts WOULD NOT be in the game, All he did was confirm a few new characters, that dosnt mean there wont be a few more.

  • [000]

-ps. you have some really crooked finger tips

    • [000]

Deleted your comment, I see. Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone your identity.

  • BuckStud

Sony’s video gaming division has made less than $2 Billion since it released the first PlayStation. Nintendo has made over $32 Billion since it released the NES….Nintendo Wins!

  • Nintendofreak

womy wins ….. who the fuck is womy

  • disqus_sgtob6da3X

This feels like when ppl were asking for Kamiya if Bayonetta was going to be in there too. I too feel sorry for both of them. But any character is good for me. But I see why ppl or fans wanted her to be in there espically now that bayonetta 2 on the wii U. I see a lot of ppl suggesting or asking For Sora from Kingdom hearts or for A tales characters to be in the game. And now ppl are think that pac-man would be in the game since Namo Bandai was involed in the project. I’m happy with the Villager, Mega-man and Wii fit trainer to be in the game. So whatever Sakurai thinks is right or the right choice. I’m going to buy it no matter what. 🙂

    • Nookling

Seriously, I am thrilled with those three! And even if two horrible characters were added I would still buy it. I can’t actually think of horrible characters! I think of Tingle but for some reason I see my self playing with him…

  • NintendoNoob

I wish we could just have every character in it. Like every main character from Nintendo’s roster of games. I’d have more of a selection but the only problem with that is that they would have to make up every moveset for each fighter and it’d take a lot of space on the Disc. I don’t care how many players we have as long as Sakurai does not stress himself out and the game would be totally addicting

    • David Noble

This would definitely pose a problem in games such as Fire Emblem, in which there is a different main character for almost every game in the series, and they vary a lot.

  • videogamedude52

Chase McCain would be a pretty cool Character!!!

  • kinghenroc187

Leave a message…thats why they need dlc dlc dlc

    • Jon

I would rather a complete game than a non complete game where we pay for DLC. Especially for this game.

      • Levi Johansen

They don’t necesseraly have to charge money for DLC.

I agree with you though, but I would prefer if they made it possible to add more characters, stages, campaigns and so on as downloadable content. Just in case they ever feel like it – and if they decide to charge for it… atleast it’s worth it.

        • Jon

well, yes and no. I think just adding in so much would just clutter up the game. I think it’d be cool though if they add a feature where people can create their own stages like they did in Brawl but you can share those stages online and you could download to play them. But that also could clutter it up a bit unless they limited how many you could get and then just remove to some get more.

          • Levi Johansen

There must be such a feature… there must.

Then people could host trounements on Miiverse using stages built by the contestants… the awesomeness is overwealming!

  • Rolando Belber

I could just imagine how difficult this might be, to make everybody happy on an amazing franchise. With that said I know Sakurai will not disappoint. I just hope Wolf doesn’t get booted.

  • zerooooo

just keep Falco and I’ll be alright.

  • Jamal Brown

disapointed that its coming out nx yr

  • Graeme Lynch

    Mewtwo and Gannondorf MUST return.

  • sup3rnoah

i’m satisfied with link every time

  • Joyous Killer

Now, if only Miiverse would shut up and stop requesting ridiculous charecters. Crash Bandicoot? Really?

    • Nookling

Ya, Crash is a ridiculous request. I have to admit though, if Crash was in the game my heart would skip a beat. Obviously he never will be and people shouldn’t even hope for him, but we can all secretly want him to be.

  • DereX

Hes stressed out from playing games at work all day? What about the people that actually do have stressful jobs? What a joke.

    • Sander van der Ham

I work in the games industry and let me tell you, making games is almost everything but playing games. It’s really stressful- especially when deadlines are closing in.
Most people don’t know half of how much time and effort it takes to make a game- let alone one of the caliber of Smash Bros.

      • DereX

Video game design is a very easy going and almost therapeutic career that you can do at home. Tell that to the firefighters and the brain surgeons out there. Besides, Its hard to take you seriously when there are movies like Grandmas boy out there.

    • Bomberman

I think this guy is retarded. Game Design is stressful job. Countless hours designing characters, fixing bugs (most time consuming), tight deadlines etc. Yeah, I bet those duties aren’t stressful since most of the time he’s just playing the game. Lmao.

  • Nookling

Adding Mega Man was awesome. I haven’t really played his games but SOOO many people wanted him that I think it is brilliant. I personally have been wanting an Animal Crossing rep forever. Everytime I have read an article that asks what character I want I always commented Tom Nook. (I like Villager just as much though) So as you can imagine, I almost peed my pants when I saw Villager. Then there is Wii Fit Trainer. When I watched that trailer I laughed so hard. I think while she is a little insane, she is just what Smash was missing. I am really happy with the three revealed! the next ones announced I would guess to be Krystal (replacing Wolf), Shulk, and Little Mac. I hope for a new Yoshi rep, but Yarn Yoshi doesn’t have a release date. I also thought King K. Rool but now that Tropical Freeze is coming I think K.K.R. is out of the picture.

    • Madmagican

you REALLY should go play some classic Megaman games

  • Kevin Wickham

    sakurai….. you can do it!!!!!!!!!!

  • Vextrum

This is why I love Nintendo. They love their fans, and they put so much work and effort into their games.

  • Michael Nillo

Keep Sonic and/or a clone of Marth and Mewtwo and I’ll be set!

  • Jon

Everyone knows that we need Magikarp and Feebas for the ultimate characters in Smash bros. lol

  • Your money

No wonder that Sakurai said to f@#$ off. We kept suggesting characters so much that it stresses him out.

    • SmashFinale

      You mean Hideki Kamiya.
Sakurai hasn’t really said anything to anyone.

      • Your money

oh, well thanks for the correction.

  • Kaihaku

Poor guy… I know! Let us help. Take a few of the questionable slots and let Club Nintendo members vote on which characters get them. That lessens your stress, gives us some influence over a series we love, and promotes Club Nintendo all at once! That’s a win, win, win.

  • jay

What pisses me off is all the selfish requests

“Boo Hoo if Spiderman doesn’t make it I’m not buying stupid nintendo”

Not only that Nintendo won’t add a 3rd party character unless he’s an all star (Sonic, Mega Man, Pac Man etc). If sakurai added the 500 character requests we would have 460 crappy characters and 40 good ones. <—– See what I did there?

NOBODY asked for Wii Fit Trainer yet she got all the hype(inot on gaming sites but in the REAL world). People were going nuts over it and got #Wii Fit to trend on Twitter etc.

My Point? Sakurai knows what he's doing. SHUT UP and let him do his thang.

    • jay

Further proof that Sakurai knows what he’s doing:

P.S. This is from a gaming site!! :O

    • Terrible Pun

smh…I actually saw somebody suggest Slenderman,Lego Man,Master Chief, and Steve from Minecraft.

  • David Noble

It’d be great if we had lots of characters, wouldn’t it? We could have Rayman, Mii, Knuckles, G.I. Joe, Spiderman, Pacman…it kind of gets out of hand. We don’t really want Darth Vader, do we? I think we’d be rather disappointed if we actually got many of these characters save about 5%.

  • David Noble

He said the roster would be the same size, but different, and that he’d remove characters with too similar movesets. Personally, I think he’ll ditch Toon Link (Link), Ganondorf (Cpt. Falcon), Falco and Wolf (Fox), and Lucas (Ness). For other reasons, he might leave out Snake, King Dedede, Ike, and R.O.B. The characters that have to return are Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Link, Ness, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, Samus, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Cpt. Falcon, Marth, Peach, Zelda, Bowser, Meta Knight, and Pit.

That leaves a hole for 5-16 new characters, probably in the 8-10 range. Don’t ask for too much.

  • mike

When did Sakurai ever go outright and say Bayonetta will not be in smash bros? All they did was show two new characters, that doesn’t mean there are not other new challengers. They’ll probably reveal the full roster slowly up until launch like they did with brawl.

    • Antar Rodríguez

thats exactly what i wad thinking, i hope they get lloy irving to be a playable character along with zero from megaman zero series since its nintendo exclusive

  • nonbeliever323

Just because Bayonetta was not announced in the new Smash Bros trailer doesn’t mean she’s not in. Solid Snake was announced in brawl’s 1st trailer and months later Sonic was announced so there is still hope.

  • ReckoningReckoner

*searched Masahiro Sakurai on google images”

    HOLY SHIT HE’S 42?

  • pizzadudeman

    Gambatte Kudasai, Sakurai-dono!

    • Gabcormier

what does dono mean? I heard san was appropriate in that case, but just wondering, I like to learn more about japanese

      • pizzadudeman

“San” would be like “Mr.,” official and honorable. “Sama” would be like King, Emperor, or “the great.” “Dono” is somewhere in-between; it’s an official way of deeply respecting someone.

        • Gabcormier

          Sweet, thanks!
