The Wii U has been having a rough time lately, with the announcement that both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 have out-sold it in some regions in just a few week’s time. Still, that hasn’t dampened Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime’s enthusiasm, as he believes the Wii u stands a good chance against Microsoft and Sony’s new competitors this holiday season. “We rate our chances very good. Software drives hardware in this business. We see it time and time again. We saw it with our Wii and DS businesses. We’re seeing it right now with Nintendo 3DS. Of course Reggie is referring to the already available Super Mario 3D World, which received critical acclaim, as well as upcoming titles like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Yarn Yoshi. “Software drives hardware. And we’re having a stellar year. We believe the same will happen with our Wii U business, with these fantastic franchises that we’re bringing to bear this holiday. If you look at the last two hardware cycles, it was not the most powerful machine that won, not in the case of the PS2, not in the case of the Wii. So, in the end, it’s our responsibility to show consumers how much fun you can have, because in the end, this is an entertainment business, and we think we’ve got stellar entertainment to make the consumer smile.” Of course Reggie’s job is to remain optimistic about the Wii U, but what do you think? Will sales of the console pick up as we move into the new year? local_offer Nintendo reggie fils-aime wii u stars Further Reading Switch vs Wii U game case size comparison Miyamoto dismisses the Wii U as a “nece 6 reasons to grab a Nintendo Switch before March 6 reasons to skip the Nintendo Switch for now Nintendo Switch Amazon Pre-Order Watch the Nintendo Switch reveal live! Xavier Lopez Chabelo The demand for those are pretty big. Possibly SONY and Microsoft were prepared with a big stock Lil J Moore Agreed. Games sells systems which is why I’m not buying the ps4 until it gets some games. WiiU needs more good games. Some RPG’s would be nice to have. (Do we even have one yet) (Also don’t say Mass effect) Why I’m excited for FE/SMT and X. Remember good games = bigger sales Entropyguy Some RPGs would be *fantastic*! And yeah, I didn’t buy the Wii U until Pikmin 3 came out, I’m not going to bother with the PS4 until there’s a “must-have” game out for it. Mercurio2054 the same here, i buy my wii u like in June, but the ps4 (if i get one) will be like January 2015, when the fix all the known and unknown hardware issues, and have a better game line up. AkaLink77 well this 2014 RPG game is practically a Xenoblade HD spin off http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APWTJMyM4qg Zorpix Monster Hunter is the best RPG Lil J Moore Isn’t that a MMORPG? From what I’ve heard it’s a MMO Zorpix Depends on how you define MMORPG. If you mean “has multiplayer and is an RPG” then yeah, if you mean like, huge online overworld where everyone is just running around and sayin hey. then it’s not. NintenScience MMORPG = Massively multiplayer online role-playing game Zorpix I realize what it stands for steve but u said it depends how u define it and gave 2 situations, one of wich is not an mmorpg… but whatever. Zorpix I’ve heard it defined both ways steve it doesnt matter, the definition is massive multiplayer online. there is no wiggle room. it is what it is. Frangie S Yu agree!! pls put some mmorpg on wiiu.. Lil J Moore Yeah MMO’s aren’t my cup of tea. I want a single player adventure with a great story and gameplay. I also want KINGDOM HEARTS 3 on WiiU. Is that too much to ask for? Zorpix It has great single player play, but the story isnt that special. Plus, it’s better with friends/other people, so you’d be better off somewhere else Squid If Kingdom. Hearts comes on Wii u I won’t buy a Ps4 until even later into the generation. But I do want it for Wii U. pleasE? Ducked Same here, I’d hold off a few more years. Ducked Not to much to ask for, we all want Kingdom Hearts III! It’s one of the most popular JRPG’s in the west! Lil J Moore Monster Hunter isn’t really my type of game Squid Monster Hunter is hard to get into. But I hear once you get into it you’ll be obsessed. Christopher Acuna This is true. CMB this is so true, my brother did not want to play it first, but after he started playing, he would not stop. I can’t even use the wii u any more because he is always playing! Mozellergodt I just played the monster hunter demo, and I want to know if there is loading screens all the time in the finished game or more like a seamless open world experience? Zorpix you get loading screens between areas, but they’re like, one-two seconds and done. It’s not really that bad. It really helps separate the areas. Hipster Victor I thought Monster hunter is a action game o,o Zorpix Action-RPG Nintenjoe82 I find it more fun hunting monsters in Xenoblade than in Monster Hunter. Obviously the vast majority of it is not as challenging or rewarding but the gameplay in Xenoblade is so good that it makes me want to attempt to fight every enemy I see. Don’t want to jinx things but I am confident ‘X’ will be the best JRPG ever ever ever. Zorpix I’m sure X will be amazing, and I’ve never played Xenoblade, but that feeling when you conquer a new monster makes me want to fight everything I see, but the difficulty gives you a healthy level of fear when going into a fight. Ducked Nintendo needs to be more aggressive after 3rd parties. You can’t expect every developer to develop games for you without effort. Kingdom Hearts III and Star Wars Battlefront is two games Nintendo must get on the Wii U Canes Monta Jr. I could go for a DC Universe as an RPG. Frangie S Yu thats a mmorpg TheLordOfDarkness I’m a loyal Nintendo fan – over the past 10 years (since the 7th generation) I’ve only gamed on Nintendo consoles and a PC – only playing 360/PS3 at friends’ houses. However, Reggie’s quixotism is possibly the downfall of the Wii U. There are minimal adds and they’re so far targetting very young kids. Kids as young as 5 and 6 don’t game, they play with toys. Kids as young as 12 are turning to adult games like GTA and COD (for some reason). Reggie thinks the Wii U will do well out of thin air. It has an extremely niche market of people who WILL buy it but only for their exclusives (e.g. me). The lack of heavy – or basically any marketing over the past year (especially compared to PS4/XBone) means the console may as well have released 2 weeks ago. I really hope the Wii U breaks 25m sales expectations and even reaches 40m+ Marcos Parreira Everyone says Mario is for kids, but I can see myself with 40 years old playing Mario. Also, Nintendo has got some “grown up” games coming out, like Bayonetta 2 and Watch Dogs. Maybe the Wii U don’t have so many games right now, but 2014 is right there and its selling system games are probably gonna outsell the PS4/X1. TheLordOfDarkness Yep, that’s right. Mario is simply a mascot for the different genres of games. A lot of idiotic fans (because these people aren’t exclusive to casual OR hardcore) simply say “every Mario game is the same.” While I’d argue that for the NSMB series, it’s asinine to compare Mario Kart to Mario Tennis, or Mario Galaxy to Mario Golf, etc. Mario games can be the more ‘adult’ games in the sense that they’re more challenging. Nothing says ‘hardcore’ like 100%ing a Mario game, which is harder and more time consuming than most other games 🙂 Andrew W Garttmeyer huh? Didn’t we just read during the first FEW WEEKS xbox and ps4 beat Wii U’s sales in the UK for the ENTIRE YEAR? Am I crazy or this guy smoking something? I am by no means a Wii U hater, although I do feel it could be doing better, but with his irrational statements like this, I fear that the Wii U is still not getting ready to right this ship. Seems quite delusional to me, and that is not a company ready to make a change. Magnus Eriksson Read this article? http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/12/former_sony_developer_feels_the_wii_u_wont_see_another_christmas Andrew W Garttmeyer Good read, scary for us though. Very disappointing overall. I am very much enjoying Mario 3D World though. I still think they should be releasing more virtual console games AND all the hard work they put in to make the 3DS successful…make those games ALSO available for the Wii U users. I would ABSOLUTELY pay $60 for A Link Between Worlds, but I will NOT buy a 3DS just to play that game. I feel a bit bamboozled to be honest, even though it’s irrational, I do. Magnus Eriksson Very good idea with 3DS Wii U compability. Ashley King Except when you report on the negative news, people here get their panties in a twist and call you a hater. It’s a vicious cycle and I wish would be broken. Veries Seals I don’t think that it is a major problem when negative news is reported. it is more or less the same negative news that is being reported. How many times do we have to hear that Nintendo’s numbers are down, when in all actuality they are up compared to months ago. you can keep up with the sales of games and consoles on VG Charts and the Wii U went from selling less than 10 to 20,000 consoles a month now to over 100,000 consoles per month. that is a drastic improvement. Sales have not only picked up in japan, which were like 2,000 consoles to just over 20,000 units per month. Sales were really low in Europe as well, they have gone form selling 10,000 units to around 30,000 units per month there. And the good old USA has been at a consistent 50,000 units for a few months now. All of that is great news, that can be reported on. Also the Wii U sold like gangbusters when it was released as well. Over 3 million units shortly after launched, then we have been in a decline for a while but is now picking back up a year later. So how can we compare and be overly excited about the PS4 selling 2 million units to be be honest just off of pure hype. The software line up for the PS4 is actually laughable with Resogun and Flower as their top games. The Xbox One has just about the entire Sony third party line up with strong exclusives as well. The Wii U has seen a good increase lately also it has a ton of indie support on the way and has had for months. It actually rivals, if not surpasses Sony in exclusives to be honest. So why isn’t more good news being reported, when there is totally a lot of positive news out there for the console? That should be the question. Lil J Moore Someone get this man a applause gif please Wayne Beck Have to agree. It’s one thing to report a bad release, but you don’t have to tell us every week that Nintendo is selling less than the competition. How bout the completely never reported, Wii U outsold PS4 last week? Granted PS4 was only in one region, but still, that’s not any less ridiculous than saying Xbox outsold Playstation at Target on Black Friday. Veries Seals Right, i read all of those articles else where. Our Wii U base is growing. It may be slower than expected, but it is growing non the less. I have A Wii U and an XBOX 1. I had 2 PS3’s and 3 xbox 360’s. I am a gamer. Nintendo has the best console with the Wii U. I will go as far as to say that so far the Wii U gives a better gaming experience than the ps4 and the xbox 1. And yes i have played the ps4 as well. Nothing exciting on the other two but upgraded graphics. Gabe Hoffman I think its safe to say Wii U sales overall have been improving. I have been hearing about it being sold out in a lot of places recently which means those cyber monday deals might have helped Jelle Knibbe obviously. Entire second quarter: 160.000 units. Third quarter: 300.000. Now it’s 100.000 a week, compared to little over 10.000 in spring. Gabe Hoffman That’s’s a pretty impressive improvement. Do you know a good source? Jelle Knibbe http://www.vgchartz.com/tools/hw_date.php Yes, I know VGchartz is farfrom reliable, but this is the best single page I could find (I’m too lazy too link several). If you filter out everything, you can see the yellow line (Wii U) slowly but steadily increasing from mid-October. Andrew W Garttmeyer Well said. I am still hoping that NES changes a few of their philosophies anyway. EDIT: And Daaaammn, that is whole lot of figures you are spitting out, must be a video game sales analyst! Veries Seals lol, games are my thing. I have a pretty extensive tech and graphics based background and I have been playing games for over 26 years so i know a lot about the industry. I keep up with the numbers daily. Fboogey Totally agree with Veries. I dont mind the negative news as a lot of it is just truth. But there’s also positive news and wiiudaily doesnt seem to be reporting that as much. As was stated above Wiiu outsold PS4 last week according to vgchartz and that wasnt reported on here. Mario Galaxy sold 380,000 copies according to VGchartz in just two days and that wasnt reported on here. That’s huge. I started coming to wiiudaily to get good balanced information about the Wii U but lately I feel like its been a lot more negative click bait type articles. More of that and I’ll stop coming here Veries Seals I hope things turn around with the media. I am just being honest. I bought two Wii U’s and a Xbox One. It has become a trend now to bash the Wii U. A lot of people are picking consoles by if their friends are playing. Not me. My friends can go with trends but I am too seasoned of a gamer to follow what my friends are doing. I pick my own games, and enjoy my own experiences. I don’t go with trends. I go with fun. Don’t get me wrong I hope to have a PS4 by the end of December. Up front i will tell you that they are all good consoles. I will also go as far as to tell you that the Wii U be far is has best gaming experiences out of the 3. The game library is much more varied and interesting. The game play is also better. Once you experience that second screen play it really spoils you on games. I forgot the last time I had to pause a game to change options or pause a game to see how to do fighting moves through menus. I got use to being able to simply have my load outs, fighting moves and visual feed back right there on screen. The Wii U is really a luxury car with just the right amount of power. Its not over powered nor is it under powered. It can produce visually stunning games with exclusive things the PS4 nor the Xbox one just can’t do. To be honest, the PS4 and Xbox one slow down game play rather than speed things up. Trying to match the Wii U with gimmick cheesy smart glass and mobile phone apps that limit what you can even do in the games. I put Wii U down for the win. It is the most next gen console out of the next Gen systems and it has changed how we can play games. Period. Prince_AKR It’s isn’t the fact that you report on it that makes it bleh ~ there just seems to be an overabundance. Not saying you should sugar-coat everything and make it seem like nothing is wrong; just saying that the Wii U isn’t all doom-&-gloom. I’ve seen quite a few positive articles on other sites for a little while now, that never once even ticked Wii U Daily. Nevertheless; I wouldn’t call you a hater for doing your job. That’s stupid. It’s different if you consistently try to put a negative spin on things (My Nintendo News is so blood-guilty of that, it isn’t even funny). Wayne Beck Word around Nintendo of America HQ is that #Regginator will take over this account again at 5 PM PT tom. What do you want to #AskReggie?— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) December 2, 2013 Guest All reggie does is answer useless questions, nothing really like what games Agent721 The replies proove my point. Wii U Daily should be a site for fans and not a repository of the same article the AP press or Reuters puts out. There should be unique articles on the Wii U…whey are they? Some have been great, but they are too few & far between. greengecko007 While that is VERY true, it obviously wouldn’t hurt to have some positive articles, even if they aren’t “news”. Was there ever a WiiUDaily review for Super Mario 3D World? Wii Pary U? Things like these may help with the fanboys that are obviously feeling insecure about their purchase. Daniel Gonzalez No arguments here. Gotta take the bad with the good. Soon as you post positive news, those crazy gamers will be over it and get back aboard the hype train. Wayne Beck Your talking about Launch sales. He is talking about worldwide sales over the course of a Month and a Half. Nintendo could easily match PSBox sales if they picked up last week and maintain through the end of the year. Sony and Microsoft are unlikely to have more than 100,000 consoles available per week through the end of the year. He also did not say they would beat them. He said they would hold their own. Andrew W Garttmeyer Fair enough, you win this argument in semantics. If the Wii U ‘holds their own’ this holiday season because ps4 and xbox don’t have enough stock…is that REALLY a win? Wayne Beck Yes, because it demonstrates the console isn’t dead. If Nintendo can’t move close to a Million units through December they are in serious trouble. Not financially, but Iwata would be under immense pressure to do something drastic. Andrew W Garttmeyer What are their sales so far? Is it realistic to move one million units in a month and a half? Wayne Beck At Christmas, it should be easy. a console should be moving about 600,000, or more, a Month, world wide, in a regular month. But, of course, Nintendo has not been moving consoles. Andrew W Garttmeyer …right. fireheartis1 No you didn’t see the sales for Wii U for the “ENTIRE YEAR” because the year isn’t over yet dude. Yearly profit margins don’t come out until January. That means Wii U still has a chance to catch up. Plus Reggie is talking about life time sells not for the year 2013. The Wii U’s life time has just started and will continue for the next 6 years or so. Sorry but your comment is just plain ignorance. Wayne Beck Yearly profit margins come out in March. Andrew W Garttmeyer Both new consoles have outsold a year’s worth of Wii U sales in the UK. The Xbox One surpassed 170k sold, beating out the 150k Wii U units that have been sold in a year to date in the region. That is a blurb from the article from this site, how is my comment completely ignorant? Seems you are arguing semantics, sorry if I did not use the perfect wording, but I believe the sentiment behind my statement to not be ignorant. Zorpix yeah. My thoughts exactly au8277 I learned to tune out Reggie’s PR-speak a long time ago. He seems like a decent dude, but the man can’t utter a single word without it sounding like it was forced out at investor gunpoint. Of course he isn’t supposed to go doom and gloom either, but listening to him talk, someone who didn’t know anything about the video game industry would swear that Nintendo’s got its competition right where they want them. Andrew W Garttmeyer someone who didn’t know anything about the video game industry would swear that Nintendo’s got its competition right where they want them. I love the way you put this! Mercurio2054 it will pick up Martholomew Let’s see some compelling advertisements Reggie. That’s what’s needed now. Billboards, TV commercials, web ads. If no one knows about the games, then no one will buy the system. Where is the giant Mario billboard in Times Square and on Hollywood boulevard? That said, I do think the Wii U and Nintendo will do just fine. A lot of analysts said the 3DS was a flop because early sales were low, and now look at it. The same will likely be true of Wii U. It’s one thing for hard-core gamers to buy an Xbone on day one. But it’s Mom and Dad, deciding how to spend money for their 7 year old that will ultimately drive sales of Wii U over the next few years. GameBoy1979 I like Reggie’s enthusiasm & dedication to the system, but I sure hope that the games coming out from here on out will give the system a much needed boost, because the system simply won’t last much longer if they don’t. And the ads need to ramped up; something needs to happen ASAP! Fred I wish Nintendo would build up their studios and buy new ones so that if 3rd parties drop support they will still have lots of fun games GameBoy1979 I totally agree. I think they have actually been adding to their current studios after they underestimated the involvement needed to create an HD game, but not to the extent of having multiple large teams. Nintendo has the resources financially to take the chance, but I think they have had certain teams create their best games for so long that it would be hard for them to relinquish that total control that they have artistically. Fred They don’t have to relinquish total control. They can just get more development teams. Back in the SNES/N64 era they bought Rareware and Rare produced tons of incredible games for them. They could buy out some of these third party companies that they’ve been paying to do games. Platinum, Next Level Games, Q-Games, and I know there are a few others. Then instead of getting some of the games these companies develop they’d get them all. Also when indies go to get their games crowdfunded like Shovelknight was Nintendo could offer to fully fund the game in exchange for exclusivity and a percentage cut off sales. GameBoy1979 Totally agree again. I actually wish Rare was owned by Nintendo as we speak; the old Rare that is. Unfortunately, they are owned by MS now & have changed quite a bit I’ve heard. But, to your point, I definitely think you are right & that if Nintendo would buy up a few studios & make them exclusive, then things would look much better for the Big N. Fred Which makes me wonder why they aren’t doing it. GameBoy1979 Well, as simple as we may think it would be, it’s actually a massive undertaking in several respects to do something like that. They do have the finances & the people to get it done, but there are so many other issues involved. Investor politics these days is one thing that has taken a stranglehold over many studios, it seems, to the point where they have no choice but to do what the guys around the board room table of a certain company tell them to do. I’m sure there are multitude reasons why they haven’t done so. I hope it’s not just stubborness. Fred I swear if I ever owned a company I’d never go public it just causes so many management problems GameBoy1979 Yep, it unfortunately does. All it’s good for is those greenbacks. I’ve worked for a company that was publicly owned/traded & everything was about meeting a sales goal & making money, not pleasing a customer. They would tell us to sell products to people even if they really didn’t need OR want them in the first place. The same thing is happening with gaming to a degree. You can’t blame folks for wanting to make a dollar, though, but it’s frustrating from a player/artistic standpoint. Fred The company I work for went public a decade ago, but the owned hated that aspect of it so he bought back all the shares and it’s privately owned again. Boy am I glad GameBoy1979 I bet so. I wish mine would have, but it was too large to go back. I learned a very valuable lesson working for a company like that, though; one which I hope I will use to guide from here on out. Hipster Victor As long as this mysterious game he’s gonna show at the VGW is Hardcore. Its gonna be epic :3 GameBoy1979 I hope so! DarkLegacy You speak true words. Have an upvote 😀 Krzysztof 3…2…1…. FIGHT !!! Xavier Lopez Chabelo The PS4 already reached 2.1M… so lets just wait the next month to see those numbers inscreade more T_t Krzysztof Hope those figures stay at the same proportions. Alexander Kleinwechter Wait, everbody sad to me that ps4 and xbox one has already sold more then 4 million units, is that true! EDIT: lol i got 2 dislikes, dont know why, but either way, Is vgchartz correct? NintenScience That was only for Wal Mart and Target. http://wiiudaily.com/2013/12/wii-u-black-friday-performance Fred for those 2 stores on this years black friday NOT TOTAL NintenScience Agreed. Lil J Moore No. 2.1 million right now for Ps4. Xbox1 don’t know yet. Magnus Eriksson I think that was compared with the launch, not full year. Jon they have not outsold the Wii U as of yet, it was just in the UK. people say they outsold the lifetime sales in the UK and then the human stupid gene kicked in and they thought worldwide. Daniel Gonzalez According to recent news, PS4 has hit 2.1 million units. Sony’s goal is 5 million by March. As for Microsoft, I can’t say. As for your question about VGChartz, their sales figures are for the most part, off, but not far off to say the least. They take time to update. josh You’re pretty much setting yourself up to get dislikes by mentioning the competition in here. Daniel Gonzalez You risk dislikes no matter what your comment is. Of course, you have to pick your battles in every case. Unless you don’t care if you’re hated or not(like myself), then fire away. 😛 NintenScience There are dislikes even for positive comments. lol Daniel Gonzalez I think people just like to dislike for some unknown reasons. Even during a simple question that you may post. I’m fine with being hated, it’s just another way of being liked, only people hide their true feelings. 😛 Matt ps4 has sold 2.1 million consoles Worldwide or its shipped 2.1 million,Xbox1 has sold something like 1.4 million Worldwide,WiiU has sold around 4.3 million as of 04/12/2013….. Matt No the ps4 and xbox1 still have a long climb there through the easy bit give it about 2 more weeks hype has gone down Nintendo will start advertising future games i think like Smashbros,MK8,Watchdogs,Bayonetta2,X,ect ect… Noel Canales Outdated info, PS4 is already at 2 million after on month! Noel Canales http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/29920/record-holiday-sales-for-ps4-xb1 Over 250,000 PS4 consoles were sold in the UK alone during its first 48 hours on sale, making it the fastest selling home console in the UK ever. That’s already larger than the total lifetime install base of the Wii U, and well above the impressive 170,000 Xbox One units sold in the UK during its first entire week. Jon ok, first off. That is not the UK sales, second it is also week old Data so the 2.1m sales are not in there yet. Petri I didnt even know that Wii U was over 4M. But doesnt that mean Wii U’s data is week old? Though doubt there is much increase on sales. fireheartis1 This could happen if Nintendo would get some advertisement rolling like they had with the Wii. Let’s just face some facts here, the Wii U’s advertisement has been crap until recently. They needed to do what they did with the Wii get the system all over TV. I don’t know why Nintendo believes that people get most of their information over the internet now days. It’s us hardcore gamers who get that information not the average consumer. The Wii U needs some aggressive advertisement like they did with the Wii. The average consumer will see that as positive news towards the Wii U. If they can do that before the holiday season is over the Wii U’s sells will pick up tremendously. AZHood If Sony and Microsoft don’t have enough supply, then perhaps the Wii U could do well this holiday season going into 2014. Still, while I see the Wii U selling well, I don’t see it selling enough to meet their projections. Unless DKC:TF is as critically acclaimed as SM3DW, then maybe… val berger I don’t really care anymore what Reggie believes. He’s just a marketing-guy throwing around with excuses, explanations and promises to lower the causalities. God, how I hate marketing. Would be nice if Nintendo of America would be as honest as Nintendo Japan uses to be. Ashley King Pretty much how I feel about it. It’s obvious the Wii U continues to struggle, but I do hope future releases help turn that struggle around. Nintendo has done it before with the Nintendo 3DS. Noel Canales Again, Nintendo owns the handheld market, no denying that. Also an undeniable fact Nintendo makes great first party games. WiiU is not just a struggle. The numbers are way way off, cannot fudge that. If only we can get Nintendo to buy Sony since Sony as a corp is not doing very well. Now that is an idea 😉 Rinslowe Sony entertainment division are sitting on nearly as much net capital as Nintendo, shy of a couple of billion…. I don’t think Nintendo could afford that acquisition, tbh. 😛 val berger bullshit. just because Nintendohas some money in the bank doesn’t mean, they could afford buying every huge company in the world. Nintendo is one company specialized in creating Videogames. Sony is, beyond that, quite ‘a little bit’ more. Rinslowe That’s a good point. val berger They have, but I’m not too confident they are able to do this with homeconsoles. Nintendo always just knew how to do it with handhelds and although the PSVita really is a quite nice system, they totally beat it. But with home consoles, if they aren’t developing somithing as unique as the Wii, they were stuggling for ages now. Far stronger competition and it seems the whole development situation is also somehow completely different. But sure, you’re right about the change of the 3DS’ course as I really didn’t like it in the beginning and then after a year I wouldn’t have cared anymore if someone would’ve left his 3DS on my doorstep; which is actually a great achievement, because it’s obviously far more easy to get a system on track, that’s being accepted from its launch on, while it must be very hard to do this with a system that isn’t. The problem with the WiiU is just…. compared to its first year, the 3DS’ first year looks like 365 days of great success 🙁 Magnus Eriksson used to be. val berger compared to this guy, they are still very, very honest. compared to most other CEOs or marketing-guys from huge compaies, they also are. Sure, compared to how they used to be, maybe they aren’t but I can live with that. At least, they aren’t acting like everything’s fine while Reggie is talking like Nintendo will CONTINUE ITS WAY TO DOMINATE THE WORLD. It would be OK if he would really mean it, but of course he doesn’t and that’s what’s so frustrating. When Iwata would act like this, maybe I would think he’s on acid, but at least I would think he really means it. Reggie’s just a douche 🙁 greengecko007 I love Nintendo, but I can’t stand Reggie. His comment towards Microsoft and Sony worrying about used games sales, telling them to “make better games”, was absurd. Even great games get turned in for money towards new games. Of the plethora of Wii games I own, the only ones I bought new were Smash and Mario Kart. I bought Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 both used. Yen You bought it used because it’s cheaper, but that means sales are going to the resellers not Nintendo. That’s what Sony and Microsoft were worried about, losing sale to resellers. His comment wasn’t saying that great games won’t be traded in, but that if the game is great, people wouldn’t be able to wait and just buy a new copy day one. What he’s saying is, instead of putting so much effort into limiting the users from buying used games, make games so great that people are willing to buy them full price. Daniel Gonzalez No matter how great a game is, there are a good amount of people who would rather buy it used. It has nothing to do with the quality all the time, has to do with how much those consumers are able to spend. So used games fits well into their budgets. Yen Yes, but it DOES have to do with quality. If you make a game good enough, the amount of people that are willing to break the bank to buy it new would be higher, resulting in more revenue. No one is saying that it’d make people give up on buying cheaper used copies, it’s about games with quality that people are willing to pay full price for. Daniel Gonzalez I have a lot of top quality games my friend. I bought those games used. So I’m here to tell you that your statement doesn’t fully hold true. I know a lot of Nintendo games don’t get traded in often, and I’ll give Nintendo that much credit, but I’ve seen plenty trade them in or even buy their games used as well. I think you’re talking through your own experiences just as I. A top quality game are bought at full price, but that’s not always the case. If that’s true, then why do people continue to purchase CoD games at $60? Unless you know what the general population purchases, you’re going on speculation. Of course, you’re entitled to your beliefs. I won’t argue that. 😛 Yen Okay I think you misunderstood. I was just giving an explanation for Reggie’s comment on Sony and Microsoft’s used game policies many months ago. I’m not saying that people don’t buy good games used at all. I’m not saying I see people doing that, nor am I saying you do that. People can buy whatever they want. I’m saying that Reggie’s comment that “if Sony and Microsoft are worried about used game sales, they should make better games” is not absurd because it has it’s points. If they were worried about used game sales, they should make games so good that people don’t want to sell it back which lowers the number of used copies available to be bought. I’m not saying that good games can’t be bought used. Daniel Gonzalez Nah, I got what you meant. I just like to be argumentive. 😛 Rinslowe So true! That’s the smartest thing *you’ve ever written. 🙂 Edited for Danielle’s viewing pleasure…. Daniel Gonzalez you’ve* When questioning someones smarts, you should at least proofread. Otherwise, your claim backfires. 🙂 Rinslowe Purleeease! Itchytriggergrammarnazi-much (bows low in kimono style) 🙂 Daniel Gonzalez Nah, but it’s fun to see you spaz on about it. You have amused me. Oh right. Please* The king is pleased. Good night to you. 😛 Rinslowe I don’t know about the King… Self confessed king of JPG’s maybe… Do I get any credit for my rather clever Japanese impression or you just gonna leave me hangin? greengecko007 The thing is though, I never had to wait longer than a few weeks to get a relatively new game being sold as “used”. People buy and trade in games on a regular basis. The quality of a game won’t deter people from playing it and then turning it back in quickly, especially with Gamestop’s deal for 30 day return. Yen I know, gamestops near me were already advertising used PS4 and Xbox Ones for black friday that’s how fast they can be sold back. But there are still millions of people buying them full price day one. Same with software, if it’s good enough, more people will be willing to do it for full price because they don’t even want to wait even a day. I’m not saying that great games can’t be bought used, I’m explaining why Reggie said what he did about Sony and Microsoft’s used games worries. They should’ve just worried about making even better games that people want to keep instead of selling back, creating less used copies. It’s not about eliminating it, it’s about increasing sales of new copies and lower sales of used copies that they don’t make money off of. Xavier Lopez Chabelo Well… Being positive is good for your health XD. But lets be realistic here, Wii U will be the third place in this generation. The Wii U has become the console that only Nintendo fans want. I have faith that Nintendo will release games that are attractive to casuals and harcore gamer, because thats what the Wii U needs right now. Mario 3D World is not enough to help the Wii U. LoL even Knack is beating Mario in sales, and Knack is pretty bad. Alexander Kleinwechter Knack is beating mario 3D land, and people buy it because they are dumb! EDIT: truthteller get out of here!! NintenScience What? Edit: @disqus_CvsdikIvdV:disqus is NOT here. Lil J Moore Only because it came with the system. Doesn’t mean it’s a good game Virus6 Knack is only beating 3D WORLD (You said the wrong title) because it’s pretty much the only title aside from Killzone on the platform. Daniel Gonzalez People are buying it cause it was bundled. Also, there are people who actually enjoy the game. You should be a little more respectful of what people play. Two rights don’t make a wrong my friend. I know you’re young, but that doesn’t excuse silly behavior. Also, don’t be so paranoid. 😛 capitalism1023 OMG bro, quit telling people what to do and actually buy a Wii U. This is Wii U daily and you don’t even own the damn console. Xavier Lopez Chabelo Yep I agree with you, but that is just the Hype around the PS4. I expect a good 2014 for Nintendo… I really do Guest Oh, the deceitful stereotypes… Rinslowe Can you be more than just Guest? I soo miss your company lol… All of them….ha. You’re still the most entertaining troll Wii U Daily ever had, congrats! NintenScience What? Rinslowe Oh sorry, I thought you were somebody else…. NintenScience Who is that? Rinslowe Never mind…. 🙂 Will (ishigum) Well even Sony fans who have Knack say it doesn’t compare to Mario 3D World. That aside Nintendo will do just fine. I think next year will be big for the U. Noel Canales YES only Nintendo fans want Nintendo games. However If Nintendo games were on the the PS4 or XBOX One or even the next generation of consoles, Nintendo could be reach more to other games rather than Fanboys myself and the average stay at home mother wanting to play Wii Fit, I mean the very different WiiU Fit 😛 Noel Canales Reggie has no idea what is going on. Did he not see the poll that 1% of people are interested in the WiiU? Someone does not have the ball to fire this guy or at least slap him and tell him to stop blowing smoke OOHA! Nintendo will always survive due to the first party games. Can’t wait till Playstation or Microsoft buy Nintendo. And the big N sticks to making hand held systems like the Gameboy. Lil J Moore With the debt that sony is in how in the hell can they buy Nintendo? Please explain this to me. Noel Canales Just the rights for them to sell Nintendo first party games to be used on their system or Xbox. Overall Sony is not doing well when stacked up against the Japenese Yen but Nintendo could reach more people if their games were able to be played by PS or XBOX gamers. Nintendo rules the handheld market. I know all these companies are loosing money each time the sell a unit (game system), but still more people are buying and playing Xbox or Playstation. Nintendo would still be Nintendo but let their games go 3rd party. Lil J Moore This will never happen my friend. Noel Canales It is not unreasonable for Nintendo to stop making major consoles. WiiU was a colossal mistake. Even with awesome games it does not have the potential to reach more people. Nintendo has to grow up, because the generation that were the kids playing all those years back have grown up, but their kids are playing the other systems. We all love Nintendo because of the games, does not matter what system they are on right? Once Nintendo sees this, only more people would buy their games. Lots of money was spent on the “Incredible 101” would have sold tons more if on the other systems. Flawed marketing design. Prince_AKR Nintendo games would not do well on Sony/Microsoft platforms. True story. Probably New Super Mario Bros. on iOS/Android would do well; but definitely not the big-console titles; they would not fare well. Look at the type of games that do well on Sony/MS platforms; mainly shooters, open-world action/adventure titles, racing titles and sport titles. While there are games of those genres that have also done well on Nintendo platforms; most of the userbase of Sony/MS consoles like those kind of games. Nintendo’s IPs are too “clean” for them. Just ask Ubisoft how their colorful, multiplayer platformer did on Wii U compared to PS3/360. Will (ishigum) Well most people who wanted a Wii U as their first console already got it so the 1% number seems a bit skewed but Nintendo is definitely 3rd in this race. The question is how far back are they from the other 2. Virus6 Did you not see any of the recent polling? Nintendo is up over 10% Alexander Kleinwechter Wait a minute, the sales on xbox one and ps4 isnt at all good as everyone says it is, xbox one has sold 1.19 million and ps4 1.18 million. That isnt that much more then wii u did right? EDIT: Is VGchartz correct? Yen PS4 is also not released worldwide yet. So that number is pretty good for PS4. The true tell will be sales by December 31, 2013. IIRC Wii U was up to 3 million total by the end of 2012, so if they can move 3 million by the end of 2013, then there will be no arguing that they had a better launch period. So far I don’t see tells that says whether they can for sure or not. Alexander Kleinwechter Why is everyone saying wii u is doomed, when wii u and nintendo isnt doing at all bad, look at a link between worlds, yes it is a 3DS title, but it has almost beaten call of duty on xbox 360! Yen Because haters basically. Nintendo won’t fail because the Wii U sales are slower than projected. What they really mean is, “your system is selling slow because it sucks and my favorite system is the master race!”. Magnus Eriksson You probably dont recognize it you self. But what you just said was pretty hateful. Yen Hateful towards haters? Not sure if I get what you’re saying. Magnus Eriksson You categorize people. Yen Okay, I can see that. So what? He asked why everyone is saying Wii U is doomed. I gave my opinion, that it’s because people believe their console is better and feels the need to point out ever flaw another console has. I don’t really see how categorizing people that way constitutes hating them. Alexander Kleinwechter well, yeah! I also meant why everyone even wii u daily is saying that the oter consoles are doing better, because they dont. Wii u did better at its launch then xbox one or ps4, i have no idea what people are talking about! Yen Well, strictly number wise, recently in the UK, PS4 and XBox One both surpassed Wii U’s lifetime sales. That’s one REGION where they’re doing better. In the US they’ve had a better initial wave of sales especially the PS4. So if you only look at that, you would say they’re doing better. Rinslowe I think PS4 and Xbox One will clearly sell more to the end of the fiscal year than Wii U did in the same time frame last year. But there’s very little point in making predictions based on this alone. The very existence of 3DS, proves this point. greengecko007 The PS4 and Xbox One launch is still going on… Yen Eh it depends on what everyone considers a launch. I’d say launch period is about over after 3 weeks. Daniel Gonzalez Launch periods can last all the way to March of the fiscal year. It was basically the same deal for the Wii U and other consoles that released at around this time. Yen Is that the official definition? I don’t really know what it is officially. Point is, there’s no telling what directions the number will go before next Spring. Daniel Gonzalez Not an official definition, no. That’s how they’ve been going about it during November launches. Nintendo’s launch period from what I know with the Wii U lasted until March, and Sony is basically following this as well. To be honest, I don’t know how you would define them officially, so I think the manufacturers themselves or the media perhaps defines it. I do admit, it’s spreads confusion. greengecko007 Console launches are a quarter long event. About 3 months, not 3 weeks. For example, Pikmin 3 was originally planned to be a launch title for the Wii U and to release early 2013. However, it was no longer a launch title because it didn’t come out until almost a year after the Wii U. Yen I consider that more launch period. Just technicality I guess. I see launch as in the act of releasing the console/games. Pikmin 3 might not be a launch title but it sure is a good game. I’m glad they waited instead of rushing it out. Rinslowe I would love to agree with you here, having no real interest in either PS4 or Xbox One unitl certain exclusives that I have my eye on arrive, that is… But the truth is Alexander, the “other consoles” are doing better overall. And, they seem to have a lot of interest in most area’s still yet to be released… That in no way, quantifies Wii U’s worth or overall success by comparison though and there’s still enough reasons to believe Wii U will continue in popularity over the coming months. If I had to be frank, it’s hard to believe people would not be excited for Wii U in 2014; for titles like Kart (looks amazing) and Smash (seeing as though none of the troubles which plagued the previous online experience could be present in Wii U’s version due to better infrastructure and base hardware), then X (do I even need to go there?), Bayonetta 2 (again, do I need to elaborate?)… The list quite frankly goes on, I’m excited for Watchdogs on Wii U after seeing how well the gamepad worked in DE HRDC. Project Cars sound promising and Fast Racing Neo should be slick and easy fun like FRL and gorgeous to boot… Magnus Eriksson But take Ashley who write on this page for example. She is very dedicated, she loves Nintendo and Im sure that in her heart she wants the Wii U to shine. People call her a hater from time to time, just because she is reporting on other aspects of Nintendo too. That is aspects that are negative on Wii U. When she get categorized as a hater, some people stop take her seriously. And does she deserve that? Hell no. Its actually hating on her to do so. She works to hard, and shouldnt be made irrelavant just because some doesnt like what she writes. Thats my point about such labels. Ok? We understand each others? why was this downvoted? How could someone disagree on this? Yen There’s a clear difference between a hater and someone who is negative about things. People call Ashley a hater because they’re mad at what she wrote in her articles. You’re right, it’s categorizing and she doesn’t deserve it. The difference is, when Ashley writes about some doom and gloom news, they’re supported by facts and data that she is reporting. She doesn’t just comment “omg Wii U suks Nintendo should give up” on every article. If someone spends hours of their day coming to Wii U Daily just to comment “Wii U SUCKS” on every article on here, I’m going to call them a hater/troll, because that’s what they are. Magnus Eriksson But what if you didnt label them? Maybe you will miss something by putting a stamp in their face and judge them by that? There are people out there that might write such things without hating or trolling. Maybe they are just angry with Nintendo? They could even be rightfully angry. Shouldnt that be taken seriously instead of just categorize them? The minute you label someone as a troll or a hater you attach some other attributes to him/her aswell. In the end you might end up not only doing him/her a disfavour, but more importantly doing yourself a disfavour. Im just trying to help here bro. You can of course do whatever you want 🙂 Yen Okay let me ask you this. What do you think you will accomplish by stopping me from labeling someone a hater? By the way, I didn’t even name a particular person a hater. I just said that the doom and gloom are coming from haters. If they truly love Nintendo, why would they go around claiming Nintendo is doomed? Why do they feel the need to comment on every discussion that Nintendo is doomed? There are companies I’m not happy with, I don’t go to their forums and yell at people. In the end, these people you’re defending, they labeled Nintendo as failed. Now think, if other people, people that don’t know about the Wii U, were to listen to these people labeling it as a fail console, they would be less likely to buy it wouldn’t they? If these people really want to help Nintendo, they’d stop with the doom and gloom, just play the games they enjoy, and tell people about how great those games are. Who cares if sales are slow if the console is enjoyable to the fans? You’re right, labeling someone is a disservice to both them and me, but in the same way, they are labeling Nintendo, and the Wii U, in a negative manner and are contributing to the problems they are complaining about. I think it’s nice that you’re trying to see things from other people’s views, but you’re defending people doing the same thing you claimed I was. Rinslowe I guess we’re all guilty of a little of that, though eh Magnus. Some more than others, but we all do it. You recently made a similar reference to people who aren’t academically achieved and are lazy as a result of that. I have two degrees and an MBA, but some of my friends and contacts have non of that… And still are more established and rounded as individuals/ professionals. We all judge. True? Magnus Eriksson Then you didnt read the thread properly 🙂 I never saiid that people that didnt achive academically was lazy, because I dont believe such things. I said that people that argue that academics, or book smart people, are less intelligent socially probably do this as a defence for being to lazy for school themselves. I find arguments like that despicable and horrible, because education should never be looked down on. Its actually authoritarian in a very bad way to do so. Education, or the possibility to educate is the corner stone of every free society. Degrading education is in the interest of totalitarian extremist powers. Why do you think Taliban ban education for women? Are people in totalitarian societies more socialy outgoing than academics, because they lack both the right and education by it self? No, theyre not. But not because of the lacking education, but the lacking freedom to education. I never said that people who lack education is less than people who have education. But to say that education is worthless, or deem people with education as “less intelligent in other ways” is a horrible misconception with very dangerous connotations. Edit: Also I thought I explained my views on this by referring to for example politicians, who are both carismatic, able to debate and interact socially on a whole different level than me even though I might be skilled in those areas. I could have alot more talents in other areas such as music, art, psychological advantages, logic abilities and IQ without being “smarter” than the politicians when it comes to certain types of articulations in social settings. But that doesnt change that intelligent people still have advances in this type of settings than lesser intelligent people. edit2: Yes we are all judging on before hand. Its crucial for all types of understanding. Without making judgements we could never interact with people, solve problems or understand things. Its the basics of philosophical hermeneutics. But judging is never the problem, not even racist judgements IF we are able to revise past judgements as false, and seeking to ground new judgements on better grounds in the future. So of course I judge, everyone does, all the time. And Im the first to say that yes, I judge people wrong often. But Im always willing to better my understanding of things. And Im actually thankful when my wrongs are put in front of me that I can revidere them. Daniel Gonzalez Gotta love the irony in that. Magnus Eriksson hmm? 🙂 Daniel Gonzalez I agreed with your post in other words. 😛 Rinslowe Ok, ok lol…. ” I said that people that argue that academics, or book smart people, are less intelligent socially probably do this as a defence for being to lazy for school themselves.” Now I’m with you! Admittedly it was a pretty fast skim over the first time. Hope you don’t mind but I’ll read the rest of above post later. I’ve seen enough to know where we’re at! 🙂 Your Edit; So true in certain settings, people always accuse me of stealing the show. Of being overly positive when socialising but overly critical in the office. But I guess that’s obvious at least for some… I’ll never be a successful politician, but maybe because I have no motivation to do so. What a lot of people don’t realise is my appreciation for music and a love of the piano. Which I’ve been playing since 6…. Even some close associates have no idea…. That and an addiction to gaming. lol! My edit: I read it anyway…ha. Thanks Magnus. Magnus Eriksson Sure, read it whenever you want to. I write long texts because I feel that you are worth the effort. I feel that you are able to follow long strings of thought, and I respect your way of debating. More people should debate that way. Rinslowe Thanks again Magnus. I really respect that. Poetry is the greater intelligence though. And compression of data. But I’ll never be a poet that much is certain. Lack of poetic motivation. So, long lengthy points it is… 🙂 Jon they are about a week behind. PS4 is around 2.1 mil now Will (ishigum) Crack those whips at those programmers and get MK8 and SSBWU out ASAP! Don’t rush it but speed it up! NintenScience “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad” – “Shigeru Miyamoto” Will (ishigum) That’s why I said don’t rush it but speed it up. Magnus Eriksson Wii Party U proves that sentence wrong NintenScience Is it rushed? Lil J Moore No Daniel Gonzalez Yes.(couldn’t help myself) Mozellergodt It’s taking so long because of the crazy hardware optimizations they need to do in order for it to run smoothly on a Wii U. JK ! Will (ishigum) 😛 Prince_AKR Nintendo has already stepped up their marketing efforts ten-fold, which is good; but they still need to go all out. I’m quite curious about the news they’ll be delivering at the VGX Awards. It seems like everybody has a big announcement, and if I recall, this would be N’s first time making an appearance, no? Regardless; I hope Wii U does well too. It doesn’t have to be the best; just survive and keep flourishing in great games. I’ve been enjoying the system so far, and I hope to continue. Maybe if they play their cards right, when the PS4 and XBOX One run out of hype fuel (as all consoles do) and become stagnant for awhile; Nintendo can jump on those opportunities (especially when the other systems are sold-out) and really move up a few spaces. Time will tell. BIG Franky Look…. I like Reggie as much as anyone… BUT…. if he really TRULY believes that statement, then I have to question Nintendo’s leadership. That is just an insane statement. only an irrational insane person would believe that “the Wii U has a good chance against the Xbox One and PS4 this holiday season.” INSANE. Lil J Moore Well call me the craziest of people then Daniel Gonzalez Okay, you’re crazy. NintenScience “good” is a subjective term. It would NOT hurt to NOT take it seriously… Edit: xd, your comment has 4 downvotes. Magnus Eriksson Agree, besides the like-Reggie-stuff. I kind of dislike him. He is arrogant and ignorant. I would rather see some of the other guys run his show. The guy who presents Nintendo tree house at Nintendo Direct seems good. He is soft, relaxed and gives an honest impression. Also I think he likes Nintendo more than Reggie, who I think is more in for the money. Iwata should go too. Nintenjoe82 Reggie’s recent performances have been so wooden, they might as well just have Charles Martinet in a Mario suit for most of their PR. 🙂 I prefer Satoru Shibata for NDs because the Japanese accent adds authenticity Daniel Gonzalez Are you trying to say that Japanese accents provide authenticity and other accents don’t? Bit of an odd statement to make. Has nothing to do with the accent, it’s how you express yourself to the public. In my opinion, Reggie does a bad job. Nintenjoe82 That’s sort of what I mean. Reggie just seems like a ‘suit’ reading a script but Shibata san from the EU Nintendo Directs sounds less like he is reading a script despite his thick accent. Prince_AKR The man is the leader of the US branch; you’d think he knows what he’s talking about. Not saying that automatically makes him right – but that doesn’t make him wrong either. Personally, I feel it can go either way. – The Wii U is cheaper. – The Wii U has free online. – The Wii U is more family-oriented (it’s Christmas; and families will be hunting for a system that suits just that – families.) – The Wii U has MARIO (which has always been a system-seller ~ just ask 3DS how it got out of its slump). – The PS4 and XBOX One will have off-periods (times of unavailability – a.k.a ~ SOLD OUT) – Their hype will eventually subside and they will hit a slump as all systems do after launch. – The PS3 and 360 are still going strong and most of the newer titles coming out for PS4 and XBOX One are still available for the older, but much cheaper and more established systems – meaning that they can potentially suppress the newer systems’ sales and that could even help Wii U. Wii U has a chance. You just can’t look at the negatives and think: “Yup. Doomed.” By that reasoning, PS3, 3DS and Vita shouldn’t even exist at this point. Virus6 “PS3, 3DS and Vita shouldn’t even exist at this point.” To be fair, the Vita really shouldn’t exist. Even Sony pretty much stopped supporting it. Plus EVERY good game it has is offered on PS+. Kenshin0011 I agree, though advertising and aggressive marketing is much more important in today’s saturated electronics market. josh I think Reggie has been talking out of his ass lately. Petri I hope the 7th brings something real exciting, but more than anything, something we havent seen already. NintenScience http://wiiudaily.com/2013/12/paper-monsters-recut-trailer/ MujuraNoKamen It does stand a chance of this but only providing its advertised! It’s true software sells hardware, look at the sales jumps caused by Pikmin 3, Monster Hunter, WW HD etc. But the problem is people don’t know what’s on offer. We’re getting ads for SM3DW which is great but where’s Kart? where’s Lego? MH3? X? W101? Watch Dogs? PS4’s Line-up is average but they’ll get Destiny, Infamous and more in half the time it took Nintendo to get WW, W101, and Mario out. Nintendo has the advantage in that it has great exclusives already but people aren’t seeing that. Many still think WIi U is a Wii controller, not a next-gen console (partially out of stupidity, partially because Nintendo) When Nintendo says “here’s a diverse range of exclusive, some great 3rd party games, some amazing graphics (X, WW HD, B2), new ways to play all on this NEXT GEN console. The only one with free online, MiiVerse, Off TV play out the box all for $100 dollars less than the PS4 with its OK at best library and teething issues” then they’ll compete. Yen I wonder about this, and I’m asking an honest question. So fact is, people were/are confused about the Wii U controller. How does that actually hurt sales? The way I see it, it shouldn’t matter. People see and thinks the Wii U is referring to the gamepad, so they go and ask for a Wii U controller, but you can’t buy the gamepad separately yet. Wouldn’t that be a huge flag for people to realize it’s not just a controller? Des It hurts sales because most people don’t want to buy new peripherals. So since they don’t know the Wii U is a new console and they have no interest in a new controller, they wont be going to the store asking for either. MujuraNoKamen It hurts sales because people don’t want to spend $300 on a controller. Instead they’ll go to a game store buy the cheaper Wii (which they think is the same think minus the controller) and if they buy a Wii U game they’ll stick it in the old Wii, find out it doesn’t work like that, get confused and return to the store in exchange for another next-gen console. And that’s even if they’re interested, many people might not want to bother with anything related to the old Wii which was weak by 2006’s standards when cutting edge machines are out now. They wouldn’t have this problem if Nintendo would specifically say “new console, not an add-on, NEXT GEN!” People definitely aren’t going to spend all that money on a “controller” when the PS4 offers what seems to be a lot more for $100 more than a Wii U. Of course we gamers know Wii U’s line-up is better than anyone else’s right now but Sony are really getting people hyped for PS4 and Nintendo want to keep Wii U a secret. I suppose it would be flag for people if they went into a store and asked about it but they wont because the MS and Sony’s marketing teams are stealing all the spotlight. Rick Valenta I would buy a PS4 if they came out with the Virtual Reality headset…That looks awesome. Loving my Wii U though… Can’t wait for Mario Party, Kart, and SSB. Rick Valenta On a side note I believe the Wii U will crush it this holiday season. More games, better price, and backwards compatibility…. Squid I’d say its good to own a Wii U about now, get the games that are out then we start getting the awesome games (Pikmin 3 and Mario 3D world and friends are awesome too) Fred Don’t forget that sales for the first year of the DS and 3DS were similar to sales of the first year of Wii U. That doesn’t mean that the Wii U will be as successful as either but it does mean Nintendo has the capacity to turn the ship around Agent721 Imo, we’ll be able to tell after Xmas where the Wii U stands. The hype of the other two will have worn off & much like the Wii U, I anticipate the next round of games to be delayed. If the Wii U can deliver some games, it could have a chance still. BUT, if games continue to lag, the best we can hope for is another Gamecube. Which is fine by me as I plan on buying at least PS4 to compliment the Wii U. But for those without the means too, you still miss out on a ton of games. The oddest sales stat I’ve seen is that Just Dance on the wii was the 2nd best selling game over the break. It goes to show that games on Nintendos home consoles can sell, if it’s the right game. Agent721 I’m going to also state that if the Wii U does fail, heads need to roll at Nintendo. This is a business plan failure, and not a console hardware failure. It’s a great console, but the business plan to support it has been a giant failure thus far. Rinslowe If Wii U fails or is discontinued, however unlikely that will be, IMO. Then absolutely those responsible should be held accountable. But, I doubt there’ll be any heads rolling. Not at the top level anyway. As much as some may want that to happen. (not referring to yourself specifically). Agent721 You’re probably right about the head rollings and I don’t mean Miyamoto by the way. I mean the business heads who clearly fell flat launching this system. Rinslowe Yeah, no way. If Miyamoto ever got the chop, I think we’d be in an alternate universe of some kind, lol. I also don’t believe Iwata will either. He was hand picked from the man himself and in asian countries that usually denotes some form of connection somewhere. A close Family relationship being the most common etc… Not saying that is for certain, but it is common. Not only that though, Iwata has many more ticks in his favour than crosses. So although the Wii U may be his inevitable fall from grace so to speak – still I don’t think it’ll be the finishing blow to his career as company CEO. Personally I like the guy. And I hope that he may redeem himself by leading Nintendo to success with Wii U in the coming years. John Andalora You know Reggie, I agree with you and disagree with you at the same time. I agree that games sell consoles, but you seem to miss the key ingredient; you need a lot of games. Both the PS2 and Wii had a massive amount of games within their first year alone. This was why so many people bought it. It wasn’t just that they had a few great games that applied to some demographics: It had a massive abundance, and had at least something for everyone. The Wii U, I am sorry to say, does not. It doesn’t fit that distinction. Does it have good games? Sure. But just having a good game here or there isn’t going to matter if you can’t bring in more and more people. Software moves hardware, but you need enough software to convince people that there’s a point in getting the hardware. I wouldn’t have gotten the PS4 day one if I didn’t have at least 8 games I wanted to play lined up and ready to go. I know that many of you won’t agree with me, and you don’t have to. But I think that there was, and is still, a lack of software that would attract a lot of people to get a Wii U. That’s not to say there aren’t “must-haves” or “console sellers,” but there are just too few right now. iamserious You actually feel there are at least 8 games that you want to play on PS4??? That is a first. I count maybe 5 at most (including multi-plats), none of which I would consider “system sellers” but that’s just me. The Wii U on the other hand has at least 15 I’d like to play today and I’m not even talking about VC games. Daniel Gonzalez I think he’s meaning that the Wii U lacks the software in a one year span. PS4 doesn’t fit into the equation right now since it just launched only a few weeks ago. Des The Wii U doesn’t need to outperform the PS3 or the X-Box one, they just need to sell enough to keep it afloat. Diehard Microsoft and Sony fans will buy the competition. Nintendo doesn’t need to compete with them, they need to go after the Wii owners and convince them to upgrade to the Wii U. These aren’t the diehard Nintendo fans. We’ve already bought the Wii U. But to pad the numbers they need to go after the kids, the mom & dads, older folks and casual gamers. Even if only a third of them make the jump, it should be enough to keep the system viable and also give 3rd party publishers a demographic to cater to. Sure, we may end up with a ton of shovelware again but also some triple A titles as well. Then again, Nintendo may surprise us all and the Wii U might actually outperform the competition. Who knows? jeffp3456 I love my WiiU and esp. playing on the gamepad in bed! But, IMO Nintendo has purposefully chosen to be a niche player in this generation. As I have said before (sorry) choosing not to support online multiplayer in their big games makes them a niche player in this generation. This gen is all about spectating and effortless online multi and for whatever reason (not technical) Nintendo has decided not to play there. Still i accept the things i cannot change and hope it will be a profitable niche (like BMW) and I await my copy of SM3DW which is in the mail as we speak… RyuNoHadouken Reggie is delusional, but a good company man Rinslowe He may just be delusional, but by god is he a positive sonovabtch! 🙂 (Quiet note to Reggie; “I didn’t mean that about your mum ok? She’s awesome. You’re both awesome!”) Des Now if Nintendo was serious about winning the console wars, not just staying in the race, they should do three things. One) Off tv play for original Wii games is nice but they need to make the gamepad work like a pro-controller, so people can use it for compatible wii games. Two) Expand the Virtual console to include all of Nintendo’s previous consoles (N64,GameCube & original Wii) and handhelds. Yes, handhelds. That means selling Nintendo DS games that can be played with the Wii U on your television & have the Game Pad act as the second screen. How cool would that be? Three) Advertise the hell out of the first two features along with new games for the system. Sylux To be honest and as a Nintendo fan, I doubt it, both Xbox and PS4 lack a lot of good software in comparison to WiiU at this time, yet they greatly outsell WiiU in pretty much every region, maybe it’s a temporarily hype… But doubtfull, I think it really is up to Nintendo to push advertising a lot and not only to happy ever after families and children if they really want to go against Sony and Microsoft. Else take their loses and continue on the same foot as with the Wii as in being a “family” console there will always be pearls on Nintendo systems no matter if they go hardcore gaming or family and childrens gaming console, Last Story, Xenoblade, Pandora’s tower, Smash Brothers just to mention a few. MujuraNoKamen Exactly what I’ve been saying. Nintendo have the advantage in terms of everything but publicity. If they can turn that around and show consumers this is a 3 horse race then they can still get a foothold in this upcoming generation. See my other comments for my full thoughts. Nintendoro PS4/XO are for FPS and Racing games, Wii U for colorful and fun adventure games Damian Waga Have you seem total software sales for the PS4? 1st: Cod: Ghosts 2nd: Battlefield 4 3rd: Killzone: Shadowfall Daniel Gonzalez PS4 has quite a lot of games in other genres. People seem very keen on stereotyping a console. As a PS3 and 360 owner, I can tell you Microsoft has far more FPS games. Racing wise, I would care less, since I don’t really care for that genre. Rinslowe In the same way you spend all day stereotyping Wii U and what you describe as “a large percentage of users” here at Wii U Daily? Lol. 🙂 Before you respond with the usual flare, let me just firstly say – I was defo in at bit of attack mode with that comment, lol. Even though I believe it to be true, probably wasn’t in good taste to jump in on it. Sorry mate. Daniel Gonzalez What do I stereotype of Wii U users exactly that Wii U users haven’t stereotyped on non-Nintendo gamers? Or Wii U vs PS4 vs Xbox One? If you’re going to say that Wii U users are innocent on all accounts then I’d have to question your intelligence there. Also, who was talking about stereotypes when that was never mentioned at all in this discussion? Basically, you brought in a question that doesn’t relate to the topic. Seems to me you’re just trying to cause an argument that wasn’t needed. You only prove to me that you’re quite an upset guy. 😛 You sure have enough time in your schedule to continue to stalk my comments on an everyday basis of late. I take it you’ve become quite the fan of mine. Can’t say I blame you. You certainly do prove my point that you’re in the same ballpark as I am. I’ll leave you to taking your own meds again. Don’t worry though, we wouldn’t wanna deprive you of accusations. Those ones are always entertaining to read. See you back in the world of civility. 🙂 Rinslowe There it is, lol And accusing people of stalking your comments by commenting on them is underhanded, especially on the comment section of a gaming site. You really are starting to show your quality with statements like that… And if I’m a stalker of you, then you’re a stalker of everyone… Just saying. Lol, to you, such a stand up guy! Daniel Gonzalez Indeed. I show more class by showing civility while letting you continue to try to stir up trouble. Finally something I can agree with. Of course I’m going to accuse you of being a stalker. You always seem to be right on my comments ever since our little argument days ago. That certainly seems too coincidental. I do agree. I only make accusations when you do. Only mine at this moment, bring up a fair point. 🙂 As for the rest of your jibber jabber, the image says what I think of the rest of that. Guest More Win! Rinslowe Lol, More Win! ” I show more class by leaving your comments alone. ” – Actually you would… I’m glad you are sold on your “awesomeness”, that’s a good one. But about the rest, I think this says it all… 🙂 Magnus Eriksson Kind of interesting to see that the two persons I like the most to debate with on this page doesnt work together too well. You two should focus on each others qualities, and not fIaws. Im certain that would work out much better. Both of you are very skilled and reflective debaters. Rinslowe Just for you Magnus, just for you… 🙂 Well gents I actually have a meeting in a bit… See U in the next debate! NintenScience “Kind of interesting to see that the two persons I like the most to debate with on this page doesnt work together too well.” – Magnus Eriksson _____________________________________________ Obviously, because they have different interests… Magnus Eriksson Kind of interesting to see that the two persons I like the most to debate with on this page doesnt work together too well. You two should focus on each others qualities, and not flaws. Im certain that would work out much better. Both of you are very skilled and reflective debaters. Daniel Gonzalez Well I did offer civility. Not sure if he’s serious since he said deal in one post and no deal in another. 😛 Guest Hmm… Guest haha Daniel Gonzalez You should really add that in instead of editing your post. Otherwise, I’ll have to naturally point out that your post was a bit uncalled for.(So you know, i didn’t see the last paragraph of what you said) You can believe what you think about me or what I say, I have my opinion of you too. Though, I think we should both learn to be civil with each other instead of trying to make asses of ourselves or care what we feel about each other. As long as you can keep things to topic and off of who we are, then all is good and will do the same in return. I’m all for civility. 🙂 Rinslowe Aww that was cute, lol. No deal… You may want to look up! Daniel Gonzalez Oh pffff. Where’s your sense of humor? 😛 NintenScience Watching the Daniel Gonzalez versus. Rinslowe debate is amusing… Lol Edit: I do have to avoid the downvotes I get from Daniel Gonzalez and Rinslowe, while they are raging at each other… Rinslowe Haha… just kidding mate, just kidding… Ok sounds fair. Lets try that then. BTW, this is the latest post, the one underneath is well… self indulgent fun making… 🙂 Adrian Byrne Nintendo really are deluded, i have owned every console they have made since the SNES but now i have lose all faith in them. 3d mario is amazing but too little to late and nothing to look forward to apart from mario kart mario smash and about 3 others. terrible state of affairs Trevor You said you lost faith in them. But there are FIVE GAMES you are looking forward to playing in the coming year? That reads like a reason to stick with them to me. Adrian Byrne To be honest when I say look forward to I mean release wise I have no interest in kart or smash bros so looks like am stuck with a dud console verymetal Yoshi Yarn? Seriously? Nintendo expects to sell systems with that? Damian Waga I think that saying it will be able to compete with the other 2 right now is absurd. Software drives hardware, but there isn’t all that much software available right now. Now, will it see well as a whole? Most likely. People are so near the holidays that they’re probably holding out on the Wii U for games like 3d world. Yen There’s plenty of software. Just because you don’t want to play them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Damian Waga What does this have to do with me? I have a Wii U, and bought Ghosts and AC4 recently to show my support. But as holidays draw closer, the hardcore audience will go for a PS4 or X1. If they keep up the software, I have no doubts the Wii U will do better than both next year. Yen You said there isn’t all that much software available right now. I’m just saying, there’s more software for Wii U than there are for the other 2. Damian Waga Good point. But what I mean is there isn’t enough variety. Neither hardcore, “mature” games like Metroid or X, nor games that make families run out and buy the consoles outside of 3d land. The PS4 and X1 at least have some hype left over that might carry over to the holidays. That dude I really want to know why you you people like that piece of shi* console so much, and why you’re so optomestic (to the point of being lunatic)?? verymetal I really want to know why you care so much about a console you think is a piece of shi* ?????? ?? Guest It’s optimistic, to the point of being looney. Veritas It’s OPTIMISTIC. To the point of being LOONEY. Anthony K Aurelia Have you had a chance to sit down and use one? If you do you would understand our love for the system. And I’m not talking about an in store demo as many of its features are not in the demo kiosks. ETeach And cue the angry never-ending argument about it in the comments… Grulnork Wii U daily seems to like these kind of articles now. I guess it generates a lot of traffic (= money). Virus6 The funny thing is they say it “doesn’t work that way” but they make money on ads. And the more people go clicky clicky on ads… Trevor Of course that’s why they do it. But that’s fine. I’m not an Nintendo stock holder so I could care less. I’t really fascinates how personal people feel about how much money a corporation makes. Caleb Dudley While no doubt Mario 3d World is a quality made game, I’m not that sure it is the turning point. It’s not really clear at the moment. What I think WILL turn the system around are Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. Those games are legendary even with gamers who prefer other systems. The Zelda game will do some damage as well. Trevor Your probably right. But Mario 3D is a really fun and well made game. cement I have a feeling that the thing he will anounce at spike will be a must own game. That or micheal patcher is right and we shoul all shove playstation move controllers into our anuses! Brandon Olson Knack… Just…just Knack. x.x Rinslowe I absolutely LOVE! Reggie’s positive attitude. But lets wait and see… Nathan Verbois I’m getting slightly tired of all of the articles claiming that Xbox One and PS4 have already outstripped the Wii U’s lifetime sales in certain regions as if this was a big shocker. The PS4 and Xbox One have sold amazingly well, but not better than predicted. They had both reached upwards of a million pre-orders back in August, so beating that number is not a surprise. Even PS4 breaking 2.1 million isn’t much of a surprise (the only surprise being that Sony lived up to their promise that there would be plenty of supply to meet the demand). I congratulate both manufacturers on their very successful hardware launches, but none of this is seems to be new news. In the end, it doesn’t really matter, as I love my Wii U and I believe most other owners do as well, but it does get wearisome. BGhp The holiday session is right now Reggie, WHAT NOW?! It doesn’t matter how good your software is , If you can’t present your games to the public like a COD game or Battlefield, AC game then the Majority of people won’t care about the Wii U. Adam Howell A few months timing might have made a huge difference for the wii u. If they had Donkey Kong, Mario Kart and Smash Bros this xmas, backing up Mario 3d World, who could ignore the Wii U? Then again, all the console companies could play that game. Have to see how things turn out next year. Forbsz How do you know yarn yoshi is upcoming with donkey kong? Stephen Davis Reggie will believe anything. Thats the problem. Actions speak louder than words. Super Mattio I had a pre-order for PS4, for months with Game. However, there is not one game that excited me in the launch line up and I bought a Nintendo Wii U after seeing reviews of Super Mario 3D World. I haven’t had a Nintendo machine since the Gamecube, oh how I have missed you Nintendo! Wind waker in HD a bonus! PS4 can wait till late into next year, what with Mario Kart and Smash Bros around the corner! Enticing Software sells consoles. Nintendo produces Quality over quantity. I have far too many games on my 360 that I never get to play each one enough. At least with Nintendo titles, they entice you to play and encourage you to try and uncover every secret, not forgetting fun along the way! What’s this, Super Mario World and F-Zero on VC! My two first Snes games. Next xmas if at all then Mr. Sony! Petri They have, PS4 has sold out, and Sony cant meet demand. And nobody sensible wants XBone Billy Kostyra Reggie Fils-Aime go home you’re drunk Ernesto Perez I just want more info on Monolith Soft’s X. beerkin Ya……Xbox one and ps4 are destroying the little Wii u. Sad but true. Rinslowe Thought this was pleasant, lite Wii U reading…; http://techland.time.com/2013/12/04/10-reasons-id-pick-the-wii-u-over-the-playstation-4-and-xbox-one-today/#ixzz2mWFsatXq InterTreble The Financial Post, the Time Tech, and many other media are saying just in these days the same thing: Wii U is a big deal, PS4 and Xbox One don’t worth buying. It’s an objective matter of lack of games for the so called “next gen” consoles. It was pointed out as a Nintendo fail, when Wii U at D1 missed some exclusive games like Pikmin 3, and now the postponed games (almost all) of PS4 are tolerated by media, haters and Nintendo-crybabies… Congratulation for the coherence! 😉 McHenryGames just got me a WiiU over the weekend. I’m commiting to it. Screw the other ones.
