I don’t know about you, but one of my most anticipated upcoming titles is the newest Fire Emblem main entry for Switch, which we don’t know a lot about at this point in time. The company announced it’s headed to Switch in 2018 so we’ll likely find out more at E3 this year, but a new interview with the developer of Fire Emblem Echoes has revealed some interesting news.

Apparently, there was a real time strategy Fire Emblem game in the works to be released on Wii, but it was eventually canned by Nintendo. The game was supposed to be released after Radiant Dawn and the developers say it had “all sorts of interesting departures from the norm.” However, the director of the series didn’t like the direction the game was going, so it got cancelled.

“But, as we approached a finished product, the incredibly picky Mr. Kusahara was not content with it as it didn’t fit the image he had in mind when he played it. While it was incredibly amusing watching him try the product, I don’t think I could’ve reached such a decision so quickly based on that alone.

It did show just how passionate he was about the real time system though, but, in my experience, Fire Emblem was always about minimizing casualties as much as possible and thinking about things carefully by the turn. To put together a real time experience in a short time without these considerations and make a judgement based on that was a little premature in my opinion. So, in the end, development froze.”

The developers eventually scrapped some of the things from this real time strategy game and used them in Fire Emblem: Awakening for Nintendo 3DS, which went on to become a huge success for the company and reignited the fan base behind the Fire Emblem series.
