Feb 12th, 2013

Last week the gaming industry was rocked with the news that Ubisoft is delaying the Wii U version of Rayman Legends until September to release the game as a multi-platform release. Many of you were highly disappointed and flooded Ubisoft’s Facebook page until the company relented and promised an exclusive demo for Wii U owners.

Now the developers of the game are joining the fight. Rayman creator Michel Ancel has taken photos alongside his development team protesting the delay of the Wii U release, with a banner featuring a crying Rayman. The banner reads “Release Rayman. Support Ubisoft Montpellier” as a crying Rayman says “please”. The banner also features the original release date of the game, set for February 28th.

Ubisoft has not responded to this protest yet, but we’ll keep you up to date if anything develops. What do you think of the developers efforts? Do you support them? Let us know in the comments.

” flooded Ubisoft’s Facebook page until the company relented and promised an exclusive demo for Wii U owners.”
Are you kidding me? The Facebook flooding didn’t end with the promise of the second demo, it got worse.
I support this protest 100% and I’m very glad that they have the courage to do it.

I truly support the development team.  And I hope the boards fire the CEO for making the hugest mistake in the history of their own company.

    • Gabe Hoffman

Yep I don’t think the CEO would dare to fire one of his company’s best minds. Ubisoft firing Ancel would be like Nintendo firing Miyamoto.

      • Fred

Maybe if they fire him, he could go work for Nintendo

  • Erik Lind

it could be a marketing trick to get more people to buy the game when they release it on time 😉

    • Jonn McNally

This is highly likely. Look at them smiling.

      • Nintedward

It wouldn’t change the sales up or down by doing such a stupid thing though :S

        • Elem187

It would probably give sales a boost as Wii U Owners would think they accomplished the impossible in getting a publisher to reverse course.

          • Fred

If they reverse course and release it on time (or early March) I’ll buy it day 1

      • DragonSilths

Or they dont give a fuck if they get in trouble and get fired for speaking their minds.

      • Sydney Ultrasyd

if I remember correctly, only the guy on the left, not smiling, is a dev (Ancel). The 2 others are fan who came to protest, the dev joined them, and the picture was taken.

  • Nintedward

”We’re giving the fans what they want”  By turning your back and upsetting ALL of the fans that you aimed the game at on Wiiu ?  LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

R.I.P Ray…..  I even had hopes for a cameo in smash bros , or Maybe a MarioXRayman game
in the future of some sort….

Simultaneous Worldwide release is so important ? Am I the only one who noticed Rayman origins launching significantly later on Vita and 3DS ?

  • Johny

ok … if the devs are truly upset about this and are , so called, “protesting”, i really support them and am VERY glad they’re putting effort into something they think its righteous. KUDOS to you guys!..

but Ubisoft…. if thats just a damage controll marketing trick …. PISS off and you should really be ashamed as a company some people still believe in. seriously

  • MujuraNoKamen

Good on them, nice to see some people at Ubisoft have brains.
Fellow gamers, I urge you all to sign petitions, flood Ubi’s Facebook page, and E-Mail them directly telling them why this is a stupid move for them and a betrayal to the fans who have been nothing but supportive to Ubisoft for making this great Wii U game.

  • Nintendofreak

well at least dere is some decency in d developers

    • There isn’t any in your grammar though… :/

      • Petri

You should teach proper grammar, if it honestly disturbs you,
        not just bitch about it.

        • I do teach it when people make honest gramatical errors.

However, when someone purposely butchers simple words like *there* and *the* for no good reason, I’m afraid “bitching” is the only way I’m capable of responding.

  • I read before somewhere that some of the developers definitely where not happy about it, whether this is a publicity stunt or a real action. I have two things to say about it.

If it’s real and they really do this to get the game released in time on the WiiU, or atleast trying. Then they have my support 110%. I respect that these guys do this taking the risk of losing their job because of this for the game.

If it’s a publicity stunt, then seriously Ubisoft is done for me, in that case I won’t even bother to buy the zombiu bundle anymore so in this second scenario I say Fu Ubisoft, and piss off.

    • Point me to a gaming company the size of Ubisoft who isn’t out there for the money.  Any big company could have gotten themselves in a similar situation, even Nintendo.  Think of all the near finished games Nintendo chose never to release, like Star Fox 2, and where is Earthbound on the VC?  Ubisoft is just making the same decision others would make, at the wrong time, with the wrong fans, while releasing too much information.  To say no just to ubisoft and stick with with Nintendo, Sega, EA, and many others doesn’t seem like a balanced reaction.

      • That’s the whole point, they indeed gave to much info so we all whine about it (including myself even though I don’t have a WiiU anyway) it would be much better to give far less info then they did now, we would probably whine less then, the whole point here is after the many dissapointed reactions everywhere it would be an even worse choice to use it as a publicity stunt just to sell the game still or more. Which directs to my second conclusion in case it is a publicity stunt. And understandibly many fans of Rayman may come to my second conclusion and really do think about boycotting Ubisoft.

Personally I think the reaction from the devs and this photo are authentic, as I said before it has gone around on the net that some devs really where not happy at all with this delay. I feel like picking this side of the story, and therefor will believe and will still buy Ubisoft stuff.

As for your part about why Earthbound isn’t in the Eshop, making N do the same in a way, on that honestly I can’t even give a honest response(earthound related) I’ve seen it being used so many times in arguments (especially on this site) but for me as European that argument has no meaning whatsoever (don’t get me wrong pls, seeing it being used so often in arguments means it must be a great game). As for us Europeans the game Earthbound and the sequals Mother 2 and Mother 3 have never been released at all in Europe. All I know about that game is that a friend of mine imported it on the snes for €220,- in the 90’s, I for one only know the game from name, never played it and it’s impossible to get my hands on unless they DO release it on E-shop.

        • Scott Duperree

Good points.  I never played Earthbound either, although I was pumped for Earthbound 64, though it never happened.  I would like to play it, and maybe Nintendo could make it happen.

  • Adam Porter

they have my support, i’ll continue to bombard the ubisoft facebook page until the original release date after that i will not be taking any more interest in the game or the protest.

  • Ubisoft is doing a terrible PR job on this, but the devs are out there trying to win the fans over.  Good for them.

  • I say boycott the companys that won’t release games on the wii u

  • Fred

I’m new to gaming, I’ve owned my PS3 for several years and now I have a Wii U. Historically speaking, is it likely that Ubisoft will change their mind and release the game this month? Is is normal for developers to protest like this?

    • It’s not normal for developers to protest like this at all. This is highly unprecedented. As for Ubisoft releasing the game on time, that’s highly unlikely as well. Their attitude about it is telling games to wait until September if they really want to play it.

      • Them releasing the game all depends on how big the situation gets. If it gets to the point that they’re surrounded by angry gamers and their own employees, they might be pressured to release it. It’s likely to happen if it continues to grow as it’s been so far.

  • Guest

http://youtu.be/_4ljQ_NyTR4  These are my thoughts :/ very disapointed Like subscribe and share your thoughts with me 🙁 sad that they wont change their mind …Ubisoft u must learn to respect developpers and listen your fans =_____o

  • Laud

This only supports what I said about Nintendo fans being the most hardcore 😛

  • audi lover

Was gona go out and buy this game on release date, not a game I wld even consider on my xbox so ubisoft has made a massive mistake, good to see the developers try and take a stand ubisoft has always been a shit company

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Well they made a poor decision this time. Maybe they will release it sooner, or maybe they won’t. Only one way to find out.

  • Mario

Free Rayman Ubisoft! I cannot believe your delaying the game! Just cause you want to release it at the same time than the PS3 and Xbox 360 vresion! We want the WiiU version out NOW!

  • Victor Galvez
  • skid5jack

Oh for gods sake. Who cares.
Who actually is bothered by this game ?
Who honestly can blame Ubisoft. Game developers need to earn money in order to stay in business. If this was a WiiU ONLY title. It wouldn’t have sold, period. Just be glad it is coming to the system.

    • Nobody’s mad that it’s not exclusive anymore; The fans are pissed because the game is finished for Wii U, and Ubi is holding it back 7 months for no good reason.

  • Lev M

this is the best news all week in gaming

  • Aamir Islam

This is awful. Why Ubisoft, WHY? I thought you wanted to be the leading third party on Wii U. So its not selling so well, does it really make a difference when you release the WII U VERSION. Im not saying cancel the PS3 and XBOX versions. I’m saying release the WII U VERSION on February 28TH! You worked these devs to death then delayed it to have a multi platform release?

  • Gabe Hoffman

Very nice of Micheal himself to support the cause. If he goes as far as to threaten to leave Ubisoft. The suits will just have to give us legends early

  • fireheartis1

Yes I knew not all of Ubisoft’s employees supported the delay.  I’m mean come on why delay a game that is ready for the Wii U just because you want to do a muliplat.  Who gives a rat’s rear end what Microsoft’s so called policy is.  It just proves how selfish Microsoft really is to want Ubisfot to delay a fininished game in the first place.  Michel Ancel is correct in wanting the game released when it was originally supposed to be.  I think Nintendo should also join the fight to get this game on time.  It’s bull crap to push it back when it shouldn’t have been in the first place.  Thank you Michel Ancel and the other development team for showing such courage and strength in this decision.

  • Dominic Coradazzi

Shoot, if I’d been working nonstop for months without seeing my family only to find out I really didn’t need to work that hard, I’d be protesting the fuck out of Ubisoft too

  • Kevin Welch

If you Ubisoft wants to blow off Wii U owners by delaying the release just to offer it on multi-platforms then I’m just wait two more weeks after release and buy a second hand copy so no revenue for them.  I was going to buy release day.  I let them know this on their facebook page and I think everyone should do the same. In fact, I think I’ll make that my practice for all Ubisoft games now.

  • Linskarmo

It’s great for the developers to stand up against the outrageous delay. I fully support their efforts, and hope Ubisoft will change their minds about this.

  • Anthony K Aurelia

give Rayman a bunch of plungers…he escaped using em b4

  • Petri

Exclusive demo… until 2 days before its release, they announce a delay, so they can port the demo for the other consoles.

  • Fred

Nintendo Direct Tomorrow morning at 7 am. Is it possible that they will announce a change with Rayman Legends?

  • If I were in control of UBISoft,  those guys could stay out there and protest while I was inside cleaning out their cubicles and waiting for the police to take them away!

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Protesting is within’ their rights of free speech. As long as they’re not violent or harassing anyone physically, you can’t arrest them. If you were in control of Ubi…..you’d drive them into the ground. I still question your knowledge on anything cause you act quite immature and it’s not hard to find info on the history of video games and the market itself. Anyone can study that and then call themselves an expert. No one here is acting like that except you while others are commenting freely while you seem to act obnoxious over anyone who doesn’t genuinely like GTA games. It’s not the god of gaming so get over it.

Even I didn’t care for GTA IV and still don’t and yes, I played it through. I wasn’t satisfied and traded it in after completion. Online wasn’t that awesome either. No, it’s not cause you have to be a pro at it, cause that’s absurd to judge someones gaming skills or pretend to think you’re such a pro at everything. Cause we know you’re full of yourself and it shows. Is it that hard for you to say something like “I think Nintendo will be a flop” rather than “Nintendo is done and they flopped” which is your opinion and you appear to think your opinion is right over everyone elses.

      • [000]

        Awesome comment.

      •  This guy again…  You always try to sound smart, but miss the ball.  You missed the part about my firing them first, therefore negating any free speech.  Besides, I don’t even know if they have that in Canada.

As for my gaming knowledge, experience is my main weapon as well as my analytical skills and common sense.  I am also impartial, unlike you!  I also do not have to Google a thing for my knowledge unless I need hard numbers for you.  I am not obnoxious, you just don’t like what I have to write.

I am good at pointing out lies and paid employees.  How can you play through a game that you don’t like?   It is not a short game, so how could you torture yourself and have no fun at all?  I find that hard to swallow.  The online was not that awesome either?  Now there is no doubt that you are lying.  The online in many ways is better than the actual game!

So now you claimed that you did not care for GTA 4, yet you bought it.  You claimed that you did not like, but you tortured yourself into finishing it.  THe online was horrible, so you traded it in.  It sounds like you loved the game to me!  Does anyone else buy this crap?

One AGAIN, I bade my opinion on experience, facts, past events and based upon what is happening now.  Slow sales, no games, not good projected games until September.  GTA V on the way.  PS4 and the next Xbox on the way.  I don’t just say something just to say it.  YOU do that, but not me.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

You’re the one who tries to sound smart my friend lol. You just don’t like being told something different as always. You can fire them, yes, but they can also sue you for negating their rights as well. It’s called wrongful termination. That leads to lawsuits which I’m sure Ubisoft doesn’t want to go public. It makes them look bad, and if you were in charge, you’d cause a lot of bad publicity. I don’t try to act smart, I’m being realistic, you should try it. I say something cause it’s the truth and it makes sense . So far, you’re the only one who basically disagrees with anything anyone throws at you whether it’s the truth, an opinion or complete bs. You need to look at yourself before judging others.

Are you paid to make bigot comments on this site? Cause even we can throw that one back at you quite easily. Before you bad mouth someone or anyone here for having an opinion, perhaps it’s cause you’re not actually right. Also, I’ve agreed with you on some things if you took the time to look at your previous comments, so don’t say I’m here to just prove you wrong because then you’d certainly be talking out your ass again.

GTA V is on it’s way, but that doesn’t spell doom for Ninendo either. I’m sorry, but people say this about Nintendo all the time and yet it never has happened yet. So again, how about being a little more realistic and wait about a year before calling it a flop. Vita is right now, and yes my friend, it is classified as a console, a portable console. Their markets are the same, which is video games. You’ll tell me they’re different markets blah blah blah, but it is what it is. I still agree that Nintendo is in trouble right now, but in the long term, I doubt it.

GTA is a big seller, but not a game that will kill Nintendo or it’s sales. You maybe be right about them not getting enough third party games, but then again, what did you expect? If that’s the only kind of games you like, then stick to your 360 and 720 in the future. If that’s your taste for gaming, power to you, but don’t come on here pushing your opinion like it’s right cause me and anyone else has the right to disagree with you. If you don’t like what I say, then don’t bother to respond to my comments.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Also, you are obnoxious. You just don’t see it lol. Again, I don’t care what you write about Nintendo. I have every right not to agree with you and i honesty doubt you’re an analyst. Even analyst don’t act with such egotism, but then again, maybe they do. Also, I said I didn’t care for GTA IV, yes, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it and worship it likes its the holy grail like you. It had it’s weak points which was a deal breaker to me. If you like it, fine, but I don’t have to and I didn’t like it as much. GTA V i will give a chance, but that doesn’t mean I’ll treat it like it’s the Mona Lisa and should be praised.

  • I’m glad to see the dev team taking a stand for gamers on this one. Yet another way Ubisoft keeps squandering its goodwill with paying customers.

  • Happy to see the devs taking a stand on this. Yet another way Ubisoft continues to squander the goodwill of its paying customer base!

  • cazzab82

Michel Ancel, you are my hero! Not letting me down since i played my first rayman game!
