EarthBound is one of Nintendo’s most beloved SNES games, which is why many fans were so excited when Nintendo finally announced that they would be bringing the game to the Wii U virtual console.

That’s a great win for fans, but how would you like to own one of the original prototype cartridges of the game? You can, for a mere $15,000. A rare prototype that has been authenticated by the VGA has gone up on eBay for sale, with the seller stating:

This is a pre-production prototype of Earthbound for the SNES.  There are very, very few of these known, and one hasn’t sold publicly on Ebay in recent history (personally, I’ve never seen one listed).  When it comes to Earthbound collectibles, this is the grail of all grails!  Do not miss your chance to snatch this up as you may never have the chance again!

So how about it? Fancy owning that $15,000 cartridge? You can view the full auction here.

    • What about a Waluigi prototype?

      • Graham Gillman

        O.o What?

  • Mario

That’s a lot of cash for a video game prototype.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Cheetah Men 2 sometimes goes for over that.

  • Ken Seymour

It isn’t about if you would spend $15,000 on a game, obviously it depends on how much money you have. Right now, no.. If I was a millionaire.. I’d buy 5.

  • iceazeama

    are you fucking serous?????

    • Pinwheel

      Sure why not

      • iceazeama

you can emulate this shit for free or even now buy the game on vc. took long enough.

        • guest

That’s not the point, the point is that it is a rare prototype. Very Valuable and being sold at a relatively low cost.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Can you emulate a prototype in physical form? No. That’s what makes it more rare than a rom that you can get from a website.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

If I was rich, I would buy this in a heart beat. However, I already have an Earthbound cartridge from years back, so that’s good enough for me. The one I have is worth about 200 to 300 bucks in the market. It’s priceless to me. Even a factory sealed game goes up to 15k.

    • iceazeama

why did these bitches thumbs this down, it only makes sense.

      • Zombie Boy

Jealous he has a copy of Earthbound? I know Mr. Gonzalez has a reputation of being a bit of a troll around here, but the fact that he has owned (and probably still owns) a Nintendo system is a good thing. But unfortunately, some people see his name and immediately dislike his posts without reading them! I’m not saying I necessarily agree with the things he says, but people really should read comments before judging them… The same goes for Knowledgeiswhathebelievesitis, 99% of what he says is pure shite, but every so often, he does reveal a pearl of wisdom amongst it all!

        • Daniel Gonzalez

They give me the rep of a troll because I speak my mind rather than praise Nintendo for every single thing they do. Apparently for most people here, having an opinion is a no no.

I agree as well. I don’t think people actually read at all or just read the stuff that they think equals Nintendo hatred. I’ll take a guess and say most of them are probably kids and young teens. Yes, I do own every Nintendo system with the exception of the Wii U. When Nintendo puts out some better games for it, then perhaps I’ll buy one down the road. Time will tell.

          • iceazeama

same here, im not going to praise nintendo for all the shit that they do, so im a troll too apparently.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Yeah, that’s just how it is usually with the diehard fanboys. I respect those who can at least give criticism were it’s due.

          • Zorlac79

Not that I have ever argued with you or anything of the sort, but I wouldn’t say it is only that you speak your mind or having an opinion is a no-no. It falls under the category of: It’s not what you said but how you said it.

Naturally if you go onto a Nintendo forum and slam it, people will get riled up. It is not limited to N forums, but any forum. If you go to an Android, Apple, XBOX, PS, Ford, Chevy, etc., and say things that might be true, yet are slamming it, people will get offended and riled up.

In the long run, some things are best left unsaid. If it will not “Be for the better for their lives” or be something that leads them is life threatening, then I don’t understand why some people have to be so persistent to change someone’s mindset.

Overall, opinions are like assholes. Everyone’s got one, they all stink and shouldn’t be shared with everybody!

          • Daniel Gonzalez

True, however, there’s no real way of saying it any better than that to be honest. So, if they get upset still, then it’s not really my problem. I’m entitled to my opinion, and not causing anyone any real problems. If they see it as a problem, then it would be simple as you said, which is to ignore it and move on instead of acting like a douche.

Your ending sentence can be argued. Opinions are also useful for life as when people criticize you whether it’s postive or negative, can help you better yourself. That goes for anything and not just gaming. You can disagree with it or hate it, but it’s another thing to say we have no right to voice what we feel or what’s on our minds. I’m for free speech, and always will be.

If you’re trying to say I’m trying to change someones mindset, then you’re obviously don’t have much of an open-mind. That is, unless you mean someone else, then disregard it.

Nonetheless, speak what you will. As much as your mindset is different from mine, you have a right to it, just as I have a right to the way I think. That’s the beauty of life, we don’t have to all follow the same path or follow others. I follow my own.

          • Zorlac79

I didn’t mean all opinions, I was relating this to personal interests. I can understand the thought of productive criticism, but not towards useless things like video game interests, or favorite colors, or music, etc.
Now when it is useful in life, that is a different story. If it really is backed with positive intentions than it changes the whole concept of this conversation.
And I am for free speech all the way, just not an abuse of. We are free to say what we want, but when it is not wanted by a community and someone still persists,…. again, resort to positive and negative intentions as well as asking one’s self if this is a worthy cause (videogames = no)

Again, most of my words are towards trolls like knowledgeblahblah and the others that act a fool similarly.
I haven’t seen you come off with anything like the crap he would, but then again I am not on here as much with much more important things always at hand…..

          • Daniel Gonzalez

To my knowledge, I haven’t abused my free speech. As for knowledgeiswhatsup….well, i don’t know why he does what he does, but I respect his opinions as they do make sense. Of course, his attitude is a bit much, but it’s not a concern of mine.

I think all opinions are important, but to each their own.

          • ZorsADOUCHe

Zorlac79: “I can understand the thought of productive criticism, but not towards useless things like video game interests”…

Then why the FUCK are you on a great site who thinks video game interests are not useless?? You sir – DUMBASS! ROFL

          • Luke Fon Fabre

            Well Said.

          • Guest

            ur an idiot

          • Christopher Acuna

Easy there. I gave you a thumb down because I do not agree with your way of thinking. Doesn’t mean I think you are troll or dislike who you are as a person. I just don’t think, even if I was rich, I would pay 15k for any video game. Just you get down voted doesn’t mean you are suddenly hated for speaking an opinion.

        • Zorlac79

Not that I gave him a thumbs down, but:
If you are smart, you simply pass up what a regular troll says, no matter what it is. Reading 99% of said trolls post will only get you riled up and ready to snap back. So better off saving time and not letting them achieve their goals, just simply thumbs down and move on. Much better that way. I can do very well without their “wisdom”!

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Most of you thumbs down cause you get upset, but I’m sure a part of that is disagreeing. Whether you don’t care for our wisdom or not, we’re here to stay, thumbs down or not.

          • Zorlac79

I didn’t mean that towards you, but more so towards knowledgeiswhatsup or whichever of his 5 alias he is using in a givin day.

I didn’t mean any of that as an attack by any means, just commenting.

But…., lol, as for the “Whether you don’t care for our wisdom or not, we’re here to stay, thumbs down or not.” I just can’t understand that way of thinking. Just like the person that nobody likes, fights for their “rights” to be somewhere, when no one wants them there. Why would they want to be there if they are not wanted there? I like to be in a place where I am liked and wanted. Not just to be somewhere that I can disrupt the people that were there before me just for kicks. People that have the mentality of “well if I can’t have it, then no one else can” so they push until the whole thing unravels.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Probably because we don’t care if people want us here or not. This site is for the public, so why should I leave? I get what you mean, but again, we aren’t the same person. We each have our own way of thinking. I appreciate you discussing this like mature adults.

          • ZorsADOUCHe

dude dont let this Zors get under your skin. he’s a know it all fag boy who gets off on trying to be right…just read his lame comments! LOL

          • ZorsADOUCHe

this guy is seriously a giant douche nozzle. your comments suck and warrant no real response. You bash people for having opinions and all YOUR opinions are bias and SHIT..LOLOLOL

          • Zombie Boy

Rather than getting riled up, isn’t it better to just rise above it? I bought a Wii U by my own choice and I won’t let anyone influence my decision or convince me that I did the wrong thing, troll or not, because it was my choice, and personally, I’m pleased with it.

          • Zorlac79

            Amen brother!

          • ZorsADOUCHe

lol this guy thinks he knows everything

    • everyone

I think 4 people are jealous you have a copy of Earthbound.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Lol. Well it had a limited release years ago. So they’re hard to come by now.

        • everyone

I know that all to well. I wish I bought a copy back then. I end up borrowing from a friend if I ever wanna play.

  • Jack5221

I’d buy. Simply because Im a huge nerd for this kind of stuff.

  • Quartzo

    Cheap πŸ˜€

    • iceazeama

hello. let me make a deal its free, but in exchange for your soul, just read the fine print, in the end everything will be back to the way it was. just sign.

I’ll buy it! (check paypal account: balance: $4.00)

It’s more meant for people who have a high income.

      • Linskarmo

And for people with rather different priorities, yes.

    • Squid

      Agreed again! πŸ˜›

      • Ducked

I guess then I can agree on you agreeing with me again.

  • Jamin Daniell

i heard it was pretty good… i dunno, let me check my bank acc– oh yeah. i’m 14 and i have no money.

  • Weeping angels

I wouldn’t pay five dollars for a Nintendo game, let alone 15,000!

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I wouldn’t pay a quarter for an Xbox One. A pack of Big Red sounds more enticing.

      • ZorsADOUCHe

seriously you know you would for a quarter..

        • Daniel Gonzalez

  • Superstick98

Do you know how many games 15000$ is?!?! O_O

  • majora :D

man I’d kill your own mother for this cartridge

  • Madmagican

    If I had the money.
$1000 could be argued but $15000 is just ridiculous

    It’s my favorite game ever, and I own many collectables…but I wouldn’t shell out 1000 for this….

Not even if I was a billionaire.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

      How about a trillionaire?

      • Sdudyoy

It’s a good game but 15 grand is not worth it for a PROTOTYPE of a game, but that’s my opinion.

        • Baum γ€Œγƒ„γƒͺー」

It’s actually the final NTSC version. (As you can read on the cartridge ^^)

  • Your money

If it cost 15 grand, there must be a reason. It’s probably the only prototype in the world,

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Perhaps. It’s never been confirmed. I’d like to think there’s probably a few out there. Not like those who might have it, will broadcast it.

  • shaw98

Keep up the good work on the news articals Ashley. This site is my main site for Nintendo news. Unlike IGN. -.-

    • Daniel Gonzalez

      Ignorant Gaming Nerds/Novices = IGN

They’re okay sometimes. However, their reviews are debatable and their system is flawed.

It would still be a good collectible…but I am not getting it…I need to eat for the next couple of years, hehehe…

  • Lord Carlisle

And this is relevant to the Wii U because…?

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Well, because it’s Nintendo? I agree it’s not actual Wii U news, but Nintendo news nonetheless.

    • CyanideInsanity

Well earthbound is due internationally on the VC later this year, so why not?

      • Lord Carlisle

Still off-topic. But whatever. I don’t run this site, so I guess I can’t complain.

    • ZorsADOUCHe

      NO SHIT

  • Kmac

    Stupid offer!

  • Ernie Sanguyo

Ill buy a car instead of this lol.

  • 8ruc3

One thing is for sure: the person that will buy this should NEVER complain about the SNES games price point ($7.99) in the Wii U VC! lol

  • Squid

I wish I was rich. Who doesn’t? Only if I can sell beetles to get more than 120,000 dollars a day. ._.

    • Guest

Own stocks and own units of franchise buildings (i.e.: McDonald’s, Taco Bell, etc.) it works. Worked for me at least.

Yea, if Monopoly money is accepted πŸ™‚

  • Rainbow Dashing

I’d rather buy $15,000 worth of duct-tape for no apparent reason.

Wow, I could hold everyone who has worked on the Xbox one hostage with all that duct tape.

  • Tyler Hilton

i would if i had the money

  • JG

A similar one for Zelda went for $55,000 I think it’s the world record for an NES cart.

  • Elusivo

:p this has a much better prototypie feel than that cartdridge http://earthboundcentral.com/2009/12/snes-earthbound-prototype-for-sale/ it wasn’t authenticated and it was sold at least twice http://earthboundcentral.com/2010/05/earthbound-proto-for-sale-again/ for much less, but I would prefer it to a normal looking cartdridge.

  • Justis Bistawros

Heck no, why would i spend fifteen thousand dollars on a SNES game when there are so many actual important things that I can buy? The reasons I would not buy are as follows:

1 I’ve never owned an SNES. I am also assuming that the people willing to buy this game are buying it for the nostalgia and not for the actual game play itself.

    2 Wtf is Earthbound?

I remember playing Pokemon with my first best friend on our Game Boy Colors, of course, we didn’t have the internet stuff so playing online was out of the question. You could only use those connectors where you would plug one into the top your Gameboy Color and the other into your friends Gameboy Color, that way you could battle and trade Pokemon. Pokemon was probably the first game that i ever played besides arcade games. So I have no interest in games that go beyond that time period.

    • ZorsADOUCHe

KID, real gamers are mature and have been playing sice NES, so STFU and go watch nicktoons

      • Justis Bistawros

You’re calling me a kid? You cant even spell since. So you’re saying that anyone who hasn’t played an NES isn’t a “real gamer”? ZorsADOUCHe said i’m not a “real gamer” on a Wiiudaily comment, so it must be true. Heh, calling me a kid? Your comment is the most childish thing I’ve read all day.

  • Iwata

Nintendo should just make a bunch of these and sell them for like $1000 each.
