So far reviews of Mario Kart 8 have been positive. Except with one review from Paste Magazine, whose reviewer, Casey Malone, criticized the game for not having enough diversity when it comes to skin color. That’s right. Whether it’s a movie, TV show, or video game, there’s always someone out there who tries to bring race into everything. Mr. Malone said in his review: “When it comes to human characters, Mario Kart 8 is overwhelmingly white. Of the 29 drivers, 14 are human (including Toad and Toadette), and every single one of them is white”. Normally, race and skin color are sensitive issues that belong in a serious debate. This is not one of those cases. This is a case of the reviewer trying to be politically correct and stir up some controversy where there should be none. Mario Kart 8 is a fantasy game populated by humans and animals and whatnot. The whole notion of “race” is just ridiculous when you have characters such as Donkey Kong and Yoshi and Bowser. Not to mention that players can create their own Miis, in any color they choose, and use it in the game. Bringing skin color and race into a game like Mario Kart 8 shows the sad state of the world, where everything has to be politically correct, where everyone must be pleased, and where people like Mr. Malone will go out of their way to find something to be offended about. I just hope that Mr. Malone didn’t dislocate his shoulder while patting himself on the back when writing his review of Mario Kart 8. local_offer mario kart 8 Nintendo wii u stars Further Reading Is Nintendo shafting Axiom Verge because of Dan Adelman? Yoshifan3 its a fucking video game with creatures, and mario and his friends are itailian. he also didnt mention that you can play as your mii, so there you go. race problem solved. also i didnt know that toads were considred human? Skelterz exactly. Mario Toads aren’t humans! They’re there own species! lonewolf So going by that the reviewer is actually a racist. Bob Wilkerson That is what I think too. Usually the ones that feel the need to point out racism in something like a video game, movie, or tv show are the ones that are the racists. At least in my experience. lonewolf Well he said that toads are humans when its a different species (although its a video game it still counts doesnt it?) Yousif Alromaithi Or just blind. I don’t know adding racism in games is stupid. The Clockwork Being He just used Toads to prove his point but tbh thats complete bullsh*t. If this guy was paying attention to the franchise he would know that Toads are their own species. matthew garcia So true lol but the game is japanese so what they do we have no control over. Graeme Lynch Of course because everything can always be chalked down to the “its a game” narrative. Or the “oh why do we need to shoehorn black people into films? ITS JUST A FILM”. Oh or maybe we can even just go a step further and say “OH why do we need to represent all human beings because hey its just life…” gtosheex When you flip it the other way around the racism becomes more apparent. “When it comes to human characters, Mario Kart 8 is overwhelmingly black. Of the 29 drivers, 14 are human (including Toad and Toadette), and every single one of them is black. ” Malone is the racist one. Kevin James McAllister This really should not be posted on this website. Look, you disagree with what a single reviewer said. That’s fine. But is it really necessary to post something on Wii U Daily calling the person an idiot? Just because he wants to see more racial diversity in video games? Please either take this article down or at least don’t attack the reviewer personally for his opinion. Yoshifan3 you guys just cant give john a break can you? he defends a nintendo game, you bash him. he criticizes nintendo, you bash him. what do you guys want from him? Kevin James McAllister What do I want from him? Not to be a gaming journalist who writes articles calling other people idiots because he didn’t like a single part of a review. I don’t think that’s asking a lot. Yoshifan3 mr. malones review is stupid anyway. ive read it. the fact that he brings RACE into a fantasy video game with dinosaurs and turtles is ridciulous. its moot. theres no defending his article. its stupid. Skelterz Upvote for you! Kevin James McAllister Why is it moot? Why is it wrong to want Nintendo to have some representation for people of color? Is it so horrible to think a black person might show up in a Mario Kart game apart from the Miis? Skelterz Nobody said that but there just isn’t any black characters and that’s how it is i for one don’t have a problem my dad is from jordan i’m white and he’s tanned i was born in england he’s middle eastern you don’t see me going why don’t the characters wear turbans why are there no tanned people i don’t care a shit its the last thing on my mind Kevin James McAllister And that’s fine. You don’t need to care. But that doesn’t make this guy an idiot for caring either. Skelterz it don’t not make him an idiot either? Skelterz Well your not going to get that i’m afraid if he thinks he’s an idiot that’s that and i for one agree with him mario has never been racially diverse but its even more racially diverse that its ever been now regarding your mii can be any color you want. Kevin James McAllister Not to mention that the guy loved the game. He simply mentioned that Mario Kart 8 displayed how non-diverse Mario’s world is and how he hopes that Nintendo finds a way to add new characters into the world. Not a big deal. Skelterz I agree the guy is an idiot if he wants racial diversity play fight night… Kevin James McAllister http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2014/05/mario-kart-8-review-wii-u.html Read the article for yourself. It’s a quick blurb on his review. He loved the game and praised it. And racial diversity is important. If Mario’s characters were all dark skinned, we’d be wanting some white folk in the mushroom kingdom. He’s not saying Mario’s evil or racist, just that he’d like to see more diversity. Yoshifan3 Mario is italian, his human friends are italian. they are not white. the fact that he said they were white means he has no idea what he is talking about. Skelterz Not just that but japan itself is mostly a white nation there all white so they probably don’t have the influence around them to often to consider it its a game plus there’s the mii. Kevin James McAllister Japanese people are not white. Light-skinned, perhaps, but not white. Skelterz there more white than Anything else don’t split hairs i’m trying to be constructive mate your no better than the mandela wannabe who wrote the review? Yoshifan3 i think hes the malone person in disguise. either that or his best friend lol. Skelterz straight up he’s mandela’s spirit. Kevin James McAllister I don’t think Japanese people would take too kindly to being called basically white. Skelterz Well grey then? Kevin James McAllister Haha. I always said if I had a baby with a black woman I would consider my child to be gray. Jeffrey Floyd Grey? Skelterz lol Mario I just call them Japanese. Kevin James McAllister Italians aren’t white now? So who is white? Skelterz I read it the other day and i thought it was stupid you can’t knock a game for that to be honest nobody has ever knocked it for that before and its been around for 20 plus years he’s just nit picking hes probably black and there are no blacks so he’s throwing a wobbly. Kevin James McAllister Did you actually read the review? He doesn’t knock the game. He loves it. He didn’t even say the lack of diversity makes the game worse. All he said was that it disappointed him to realize how there’s not a single person of color in the Mario world. If you really think he was “knocking it”, check out this quote from him right after the diversity paragraph: “Mario Kart 8 brings back a type of game long absent from my living room. Sure, there are new power-ups to play with and new tricks, like dodging red shells, to learn, and it’d be nice if there were more courses. That all falls away, though, as the core of Mario Kart 8 delivers exactly what I wanted—a return to the “friends screaming at each other, red-spark generating, mercilessly hitting-each-other-with-shells” action that made the series fun from the start.” Yoshifan3 it doesnt matter. we are talking about how he brought in racism in a mario kart game. he can like the game all he wants, but hes still an idiot for saying mario and his human f riends are white. TOADS ARE NOT HUMANS. Skelterz exactly there like toad stool creatures from a fantasy kingdom and he’s trying to bring politics into it by saying there no blacks basically lets just come out and say it he was probably black and there are no blacks and he don’t like it like i said if it bothers him that much play fight night or punch out or ethnic cleansing. Skelterz I’m not disputing that at all im saying that even bringing racial diversity up is stupid petty and worthless to even listen to no cared in the 90’s why do they care now? Kevin James McAllister Because we in the US still have a huge problem with racial diversity and accepting people of color as equal. There are still huge issues of racism people deal with on a daily basis. So things like video games representing more people of color is good because it helps give them more representation and acknowledges them as equal. Yoshifan3 Do you think kids will honestly care about racism? kids play mario kart to have fun, not sit around and rage theres no black guy or asian person. you are a minority. nintendo does not listen to the minority. Kevin James McAllister I’m not saying kids are consciously thinking about racism. I’m saying that if kids are constantly presented people of color in ways that shows they’re human the same way everyone else is, then it can only help the situation. Why is that such a bad thing? Yoshifan3 News flash: this is a kids video game. your bringing politics into a Family video game thats meant to be fun. you play mario kart to escape this crap. i sure do. and its people like you that constatnly remind me why some people take things to the extreme. Mario I definitely didn’t care. Skelterz what skin color are you if you don’t mind me asking? Kevin James McAllister I am white. Though I get pretty pink/red in the sun. Skelterz So i assume you would mostly play as toadette then? GmailIsDown racial diversity is important, so kirby’s skin color should have more variations than pink in order to be politically correct. so are superman, spiderman, batman, etc, they are predefined cartoon characters. Jeffrey Floyd Kirby has a brown coloration. Behrthravn The proof of how wrong you actually are is friggin everywhere. Not only do you get nothing but downvotes, but Paste Magazine pulled the article off their website this evening. If that doesn’t tell you how idiotic the article was, then you, sir, are one moronic individual yourself. Perhaps you should go off with your one friend, the writer of that article, and be closed minded bigots together. God forbid all of the characters in something are one race… it’s like trying to act out history with a black George Washington or a white MLK Jr. Or having the Cirque Du Soleil run by Brasilians and Native Americans. It’s needless, it’s stupid, it’s unconstructive, unimaginative, and the most hard headed pile of sh*t to ever be thrown Nintendo’s way after all of the entertainment service they’ve provided the world. You should be ashamed. Kevin James McAllister See, you tell me I’m the one who is wrong here. And yet I’m the only one not resorting to name-calling. I’m the only one actually presenting an argument. All you do is call me a moron, an idiot, and a piece of “sh*t” (sic). How do you think you look better off than me when that’s how you respond to disagreement? Relick It is perfectly appropriate to call him an idiot. It’s kinda like a reviewer for transformers asking why there are no female transformers? Does it matter? Especially in a film for guys? Kids don’t care what race people are – they only get corrupted as they get older. As the target market is children – that makes the reviewer an idiot. Kevin James McAllister No. That makes you disagree with his opinion, and you’re welcome to. But the truth is that people of color are under represented in video games, and that’s an issue worth pointing out. Especially when he still has nothing but praise for the game. He even said, “I needed Mario Kart 8 in my life, even though I didn’t know it.” Relick It’s truth – but not an issue. I think the key thing to remember is that this site is not designed to be unbiased – if you want that then google is your friend. Opinions and commentary are what make sites like these worth reading (also this is not the only opinion on this site – almost all of the articles are opinion). Kevin James McAllister I don’t mind the opinion article. I don’t like the fact that he feels the need to go about it via name-calling. Instead of explaining why he sees it as a non-issue, he simply attacks the reviewer. That’s unprofessional and petty, opinion piece or otherwise. Relick He does explain why he sees it as a non-issue. Perhaps the name calling is a bit unprofessional – but if it brings in page hits what does it matter to them? Kevin James McAllister The site should want to uphold its own integrity. The rest of the admins shouldn’t allow it to stay. Ihaveaname Who keeps on upvoting you? Yeesh I’m brown and don’t give a crap. Kevin James McAllister Probably other people who wish this site could have a bit of integrity once in a while. Mario DO I LOOK CORRUPT MAN!? GmailIsDown say what you want to say about Kinsley. but i love the fact that he put up such a title. he is awesome. Michael Hancock How moral of you. Idiot. What do you mean by “should” not? truMADDness Opinions are just that. He’s an idiot. Thats a lot of peoples opinion. Just like it is his opinion that the game needs different “human” skin color. That would be completely understandable if the game had some basis for reality. But again as people have stated and that idiot should know, its FANTASY. He calls it as he sees it, and so do you and the rest of the world. Dillik What a relief Wii U Daily has taken this bold pro-status-quo stand. Kevin James McAllister Haha. Awesome. This article just showed me how unprofessional this site is. This kind of journalism is just embarrassing. His opinions may even be valid, but to seek out other reviews just to call them idiots on your own site is low and pathetic. Bob Charlie *Your own site* Make your own site, and you will be able to say whatever you want. Daniel Gonzalez Why? Can just do that here anyways. ;P Daniel Gonzalez The funny thing about this is, why was this crap brought on a site that has to do with video games? Of course, my expectations of this site are low, but this is about as low as they can go. Gabe Chorley Wow First Todomachi life and then this.. I’m done. People are so stupid.. Next thing you will hear about is the lack of Blind people in Mario Kart 8.. Kevin James McAllister It’s really easy for straight white people to complain when people who aren’t straight or white want more representation. Don’t know why it bothers you so much. Someone Cool I have an idea. Go create your own game/tvshow/movie or whatever you want. Include as much diversity as you please. I promise if you leave out straight white people/black people/asian people..whomever, 99% of them wont be offended, the only people making a big deal out of it will be little cunts like this guy. Skelterz HAHAHAAHAH spot on!!!! Kevin James McAllister Calling people names really helps make your point sound reasonable. Someone Cool If the shoe fits… Kevin James McAllister Well I hope you have a nice day. It’s a shame we couldn’t just have a nice conversation. The Clockwork Being I can’t up vote this enough!!! Graeme Lynch The fact that you feel his comments need up voted is alarming. Cyrus Malachi exactly. dont like the way they do things. simple solution.. make your own kart game. they want representation, create it. out of all the mii characters i have, half are white and the other half is black. I took the initiative and made my miis with diversity (and im white). of course i would not be able to claim to be an artist if i was racist. why? because an artist respects and admires all colors and knows that all colors have a purpose and a place in this world. Graeme Lynch So what is interesting in your argument is how you are essentially inferring the 1% to be part of the LGBT community. Which could suggest some animosity toward such individuals. Also the use of the word ‘cunt’ having such strong sexual connotations only further conveys your sense of disgust. =) Someone Cool Even if Casey Malone is gay and/or part of the LGBT your conclusion is very prejudice and I hope anyone initially offended by your statement realizes you’re just another lame goof. Graeme Lynch From your reply it seems like you don’t realise that my response was to your comment. Nothing to do with Casey Malone. Just you and your inability to analyse text. Mario Uhh… I’m white. And I wouldn’t care that white people have no representation in a game. Especially since we had that for thousands of years! Graeme Lynch Um no for you to even say that you wouldn’t care just demonstrates how ill considered you view race. You simply don’t have that experience of not being heard or represented or given identity in the world. So to say that you wouldn’t care is just fallacy. Mario Just saying, I still wouldn’t mind. Graeme Lynch Uh huh. Thing is you have the luxury of not knowing what it is like to be a minority in society. Mario Um…. Sorry? Magnus Eriksson Not necessarly true. You can easily become that person without a voice being heard inside a white society too. Economical situation, popularity and false ethos can easily triumph the truth in a society thats built on capitalistic premises. People can experience those things outside racial categories. Females experience things like that on a worldwide basis, even inside the most “equal societies”. Graeme Lynch I’m not really sure I follow your train of thought here. I was arguing that without having lived an experience you never really know what it is like because your self reference is not equipped. You can be empathic to something but to categorically say you wouldn’t care about something that which you know nothing of is just stupid. Magnus Eriksson Uhm… I might have misinterpreted what you said. My point was actually only about exclusion on a general, which can make people to understand racism without being victim of racism. Exclusion based on gender, handicap, sexual orientation, religion etc for example. but i dont think we disagree really… Mercurio2054 i can say that @graemelynch:disqus im Latin American (Dominican Republic) and i don’t see one in Mario Kart, and i don’t mind. Mercurio2054 or lot of games more. Relick I can understand the tomodachi case. In that there was genuine concern because it is a simulation game and in a simulation game it is necessary to, well, simulate modern culture. In addition, it is a new franchise with no established characters and therefore adding different races, orientations etc. is no problem. On the other hand, it really does not matter in Mario Kart because Mario characters weren’t designed in the first place to be other races? More representation would require shoehorning in new characters that would just feel out of place. Rosalina is the answer to few female roles, but she is just one character and has taken years to develop into a mainstay. To have to do this with other races, and maybe sexual orientations while we’re at it would just ruin the franchise, quite frankly. Yousif Alromaithi Adding gay marriage will hurt Nintendo image because kids don’t understand what gay is basically this game is aimed for kids not adults. Both Animal Crossing and Tomodachi is aimed for kids. Those games are really fun, I never tried Tomodachi before but played Animal Crossing. I don’t know the reason behind those decision but some people accept it. It is not bad nor good it just neutral but people making a big deal is wrong. Kevin James McAllister “Adding gay marriage will hurt Nintendo image because kids don’t understand what gay is.” So Nintendo shouldn’t allow for gay relationships because some parents are too lazy to tell their kids, “two dudes can love each other just like mom and dad”? Yousif Alromaithi Yep that what I am saying imagine what the people will say. It is not allowed even if Japan and most of Asians people do Gay Marriage. But hey it is the picture Nintendo following, Nintendo is not influencing Gay Marriage. Mind me I am not making people get mad but no parents will ever tell their Kids what Gay is because that is not good. I meant that is weird. Imagine a parents tell their kids about sex that is exactly the same thing. Kids don’t know what love is yet. Parents will show their kids the right way because they are too young to understand. I have little brother and sisters. I explain them the best way I could because at this time of age they start to think a lot. Nintendo thinks the rights way, it is not racism and no Nintendo does not hate gays. Kevin James McAllister Gay isn’t “weird” or “not good”. Gay is just how some people are. Not good or bad. That’s it. And Nintendo has already promised to try and make the next Tomodochi Life game more free so that you can marry who you want. So yes, Nintendo will do that. And it’s not hard to explain. Here, I’ll tell you what to say if a kid asks you about a gay person: sometimes two men or two women can love each other just like mommy and daddy love each other. There. Done. Yousif Alromaithi Sorry I don’t see what you see. Mario That may work. I think. jack hey kids gay is a penis up the poop pipe Graeme Lynch What is this comment? I can’t even. Did you use Google translate? Yousif Alromaithi Nope, I fully speak English buddy. Graeme Lynch In that case you ought to learn how to better write English… Yousif Alromaithi Also it is how to write better English. Not how to better write Einglish you need some learning to brother. No one is perfect. You have some mistakes. D: Graeme Lynch There are no grammatical errors in my sentence above. Again please refrain from commenting on things you don’t understand. Yousif Alromaithi Thank you for saying that I don’t understand. Lol why are we arguing. SolarShane13 Nintendo’s excuse is so lazy. Have they ever heard of Parental Controls? (Oh, wait. Apparently the King of Parenting can’t implement age verification methods.) Gentle Robot I used to be a kid. I knew what gay was. We all did. Mario No I didn’t. -_- Yousif Alromaithi But your parents told you or someone did lol. I don’t think my parents told me about sex. I learned it from bad boys lol. Gentle Robot Yeah you just described knowledge, homeslice Yousif Alromaithi I am saying the truth. Kevin James McAllister I don’t think it’d ruin the franchise. Throw in a couple of black toads. Introduce a new character who’s a bit tanner than the rest. Do something. It wouldn’t ruin it if they did it with care. Mario True. As long as it doesn’t ruin the game experience, it’s all good. Joe Fraley How would giving toadette a darker pallete swap ruin the franchise? If it truly doesn’t matter, and the race of these fantasy characters is totally irrelevant to the quality of the game, then surely you’d have no complaint about luigi having a black or Asian alternate costume. There’s som evidence that suggests that these kinds of media representations would actually genuinely help people. If that’s true, it would be nice to see serious companies, like Nintendo, take it seriously. Relick Would Mario Kart be as popular as it is if it didn’t have any Mario characters in? No. That’s why the characters are absolutely relevant to the quality of the game, and your assumption that I thought the characters were irrelevant to the quality of the game is wrong. It is precisely the reason I am against including palette swaps in the first place, in fact. Regardless of any evidence, you need to be appropriate with where you demand and don’t demand integration. It is important for games like Mass Effect, The Sims, Tomodachi Life and others like them that they include different sexual orientations and races. It is not important for games like Sniper Elite, Rayman or Mario Kart. This is because in the first game the setting demands there cannot be integration. In the other two games it is not important because they are fantasy games where the setting is entirely up to the designer. I’m all for non-white characters in Mario Kart – but they not be shoehorned in just because someone said there isn’t enough representation. Gentle Robot I’m not white and I don’t give a shit. I can play as a ghost and a dinosaur in Mario Kart. Actually like 6 dinosaurs. Where is the dinosaur representation on TV? Why are they dino-racist? Mario Lol. Alessandro Previti calm down guys, there are miis as playable characters. Super Mario characters are two italians, a princess, the rest is toads and turtles, I understand the urgency of including different genders, races and sexual orientations as character options in games, but we can’t force it in games where it’s actually not an issue… the “there are just turtles in this game, that’s racist” logic is a bit awkward greengecko007 It would be one thing if people of various ethnicity were making this an issue about not being represented, but they aren’t. It’s white apologist groups that do this frequently with anything in pop culture. Quite frankly, it’s annoying, and does far more harm than good. Do you want race to be a non issue? Because that’s how you make race a non issue. Kevin James McAllister I get what you’re saying, but I have to respectfully disagree. Ignoring the issue of how people of color are represented in media will not improve the issue. I agree that we have to be careful not to elevate any of the races above the others, but fighting until their equal makes sense. And yes, many white people (like myself) do care about issues of race. And often that’s because we’ve studied alongside people who faced the issues we’re trying to defeat. We want to make the world welcoming to all people, so introducing “new people” to kids via games and shows and movies they already love is a great way to get people to receive them well. greengecko007 “I agree that we have to be careful not to elevate any of the races above the others, but fighting until their equal makes sense.” In developed countries racial equality has been established for a long time. There really isn’t anything to fight for. In fact, I’d argue that forcing representation based solely on race is just as immoral as denying representation based solely on race. Whether it be hiring someone in the workplace, or electing a government official, I’m going to pick someone who is best suited for the job, without worrying about how it will affect the racial diversity within the sector. Likewise, Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 is a video game, which I’d argue is a form of art. The artist is concerned primarily with creating an enjoyable piece, not about racial representation. I think it is more than fair that our personal Miis are available as a driver option. Kevin James McAllister You really think racial equality has been established in the US? Legally, sure, but not in real life. greengecko007 I’m not denying that there are still racist people in the US, but I can definitely say that they are few and far between. There are far more people offended by gay marriage, religion, and politics than people offended by the skin color of another person. Magnus Eriksson Actually US have had a long racist foreign politics. The last ten years stirring things up really bad in the middle east. greengecko007 I don’t see how US foreign policies are promoting racism, but I can understand that there is quite a debate on US foreign policy, especially on the subject of how involved we should be with the affairs of other countries, particularly those in the middle east. Magnus Eriksson War on Aghanistan, War on Iraq and partaking in Libya etc. This is related to the rise of Tea Party Movement, Counter Jihadism etc. Wolfowitz, Spencer, Geller etc draws from topics made in the aftermath of 9/11. So yes, the worlds burning today is a consequence from this politics. greengecko007 The War in Afghanistan is the result of NATO getting involved in Afghanistan’s civil war and trying to end Al-Qaeda and Taliban rule. It has nothing to do with racism. The war against and the invasion of Iraq was due to the US feeling that national security was threatened. While there isn’t any proof that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, a lot of conflict could have been resolved with more cooperation on the Iraqi side. The war against Iraq has nothing to do with racism, and everything to do with national security. I understand that these political decisions are controversial, and I’m not saying how I feel about either, but these foreign issues were not out of racism. Magnus Eriksson Not true. The whole war against terror is based on a misunderstood reading of Carl Schmitts friend-enemy distinction. Schmitt was Hitlers legal advisor from 1933-1936, and was coined the third reichs crown jurist. The islamophobia today is a result from this string of thought (friend-enemy), and have created the front between west and east. greengecko007 The tensions between more developed nations, including the US and European Nations, and developing countries in the middle east are the result of decades of ongoing political problems while said nations are developing. I do not believe that the work of one man, Carl Schmitt, has single handeadly made this problem, nor do I believe racism is a part of it. Also, Islam is a religion, not a race. I can’t be racist against Christians, or Buddhists, or Muslims. While Islamophobia is definitely something that is within society, I am sure that even those afraid of the Islamic faith could testify that Islam is not comprised only of people of Arabic descent. Magnus Eriksson Judaism is a religion too. Would you call the nazis crimes towards jews racist or not? greengecko007 There are many forms of discrimination. Discrimination based on race (racism), gender (sexism), or religion are not the same thing. Adolf Hitler preached Aryan supremacy to the Nazi party, which is obviously an example of racism. Their subjugation of Jews however, while horrible, was not racist. They persecuted the Jews because of their religion, not their appearance. Magnus Eriksson Nah, google jew + nazi propaganda. You will quickly see that appearance played a large role. Watch “der ewige jude”, and you will come to know the term the “hidden jew”, wich is the term Carl Schmitt plays on in “der leviathan des thomas hobbes”, “jews in jurisprudence” and the glossarium, where the jew is portrayed as the hidden threat, the hidden enemy (as the assimilated jews are hiding the jewish appearances). Hitler was very clear on that jews are a race, atleast in mein kampf and his speeches, although he changed his mind in the end stating that jewishness is a spiritual category (i decide who is a jew – karl leuger). Although the caricatures of the jews are clearly racist. You find much of the same caricatures of muslims in Hollywood media, as well as the propaganda in the war on terror, counterjihadist movements and tea party. Racism isnt necessarly grounded in racial biological doctrines. Racism is basically nothing than the invention of a imagination of a homogenous society where the existential different must be excluded. If you look on race, culture, ethnicity as something static, than its racism. greengecko007 Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” speaks of his developed intolerence of the Jews and Bolsheviks because of religious and political differences. Hitler was not of Jewish faith, and he hated communism. This is interesting, because I already stated earlier that in modern society racism is less of an issue, and that people generally have a much harder time accepting other people of different religious and political choices. Nope.avi Do you ever look things up besides on MSNBC, or beyond whatever liberal sites help you spew your verbal diarrhea? http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/index.html#Attacks Why don’t you take a look at the number of Islamic based attacks on people around the world IN A MATTER OF DAYS? And I know you will just mention other religions instead of staying on topic. Mario Yeah, we know. :'( Kevin James McAllister *hug* Mario I’m not black. I just wish that kind of stuff would no longer exist. Magiphart Well it is a RACEing game. Shota Dafuq Eric I think the incredulity comes not from the lack of “diversity”, but from the fact that it’s aimed at a cartoon racing game where the roster of drivers include anthropomorphic turtles, mushroom people, and a giant space-princess. It’s just silly to complain about lack of diversity in a Mario game. As far as the entire industry is concerned, though, there is a lack of diversity, but man, Mario Kart is not the game to single out. Kevin James McAllister Well, I’m glad you’re at least a voice of reason. Most people here have just called me names and were rude. Thanks for being civil. And I agree, to be honest. I would never have picked Mario as the game to point this out with. I would’ve picked a game that more represents the real world. But for anyone who even read that review, the author only said that when he looked at the roster, he realized how monochromatic the human characters were and he was disappointed. Nothing wrong with the guy sharing his view. He wasn’t telling people to boycott the game. In fact, he said the game was amazing and everything he needed in a game. He said nothing but praises for it, and then mentioned in a single paragraph he wished there was more diversity. That’s why I’m mad about all the responses. Because they’re unneeded. And of course this article never links to the original so people aren’t actually reading it in context. Graeme Lynch I’m with you Kevin. What I find hilarious is that over on the other article about Miiverse. It is all around how friendly and lovely it all is, yet you then read these comments and you come face to face with the reality that, you cannot escape ignorance and intolerance. Kevin James McAllister And it’s not even the fact that they think he’s out of line for choosing to talk about it with Mario Kart. It’s that there are so many people who think it’s professional and appropriate for one of the main contributors for the site to call another reviewer an idiot for having a viewpoint. It’s embarrassing, and I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be coming back to this website. I also think there’s a large possibility that the people being rude here are kids. I might’ve even been on their side back in middle school or high school, but I’ve studied things, had experiences, and have known people who have to fight for inclusion in so many ways. Perhaps these folks will learn the importance of integrity, civility, and inclusion once they’re out of their high school bubbles. Gabe Chorley OH MY GOD. If you want a game where you can be a gay black dwarf then make one. Don’t force your political agenda into a video game and a universe where it doesn’t need to be. Just because Nintendo didn’t make a tree a playable character doesn’t mean they hate trees. It just means that There are no current Mario characters that are trees. (Trees is my metaphor for black people… A white birch tree…Not a Dark oak tree..) Graeme Lynch I literally could scream whenever I hear this word ‘agenda’. So essentially whenever white, heterosexual, males are challenged in their position of power it is an agenda! I think it could be an idea for you to really think about what agenda means to you and how female, racial and sexual orientation representation in mainstream media affects you. Magnus Eriksson No pasaran my friend. Good to see a reasonable guy here. Kevin James McAllister Wait. So how is allowing for a dark-skinned or gay character forcing anything on you? You wouldn’t have to play as them anyway. It’s not forcing you to vote differently. How is giving the gamer a choice a bad thing? Just because you’re bigoted? MujuraNoKamen Alternatively we just don’t read too much into the diversity of the roster. It was never intended to be racist and the fact that you can use Miis proves how dumb this reviewer is. Wouldn’t it be a bad thing too to throw in minority characters for the sake of it. I can’t believe people are politicizing Mario Kart how about we all forget this pile of crap and stop focusing on irrelevant things like race, gender, sexuality etc and play some motherfucking Mario Kart 8 😀 Kevin James McAllister Nobody actually ever called Mario Kart 8 racist. And I don’t disagree with people that this isn’t the game people should be picking a fight about this with. But it still doesn’t change the fact that Nintendo has come out with many video game characters and pretty much all humans have been white. It’s a complicated situation since the game-makers are Japanese and do not have the same race-issues we have in America, but it doesn’t mean the guy who pointed that out in his review (that was completely in love with Mario Kart 8 btw) is an idiot for making an observation and being a bit disappointed. And Gabe was also dismissing the gay thing in Tomodachi Life. I just don’t get why people get so angry about people wanting more inclusion. It’s silly. Behrthravn Get a life. You’ve made nearly a dozen comments on this harassing other people for their viewpoints even though you are very clearly wrong. The review was pulled from the magazine’s website. The guy was way out of line, and so are you. Next are you gonna want black kirby characters? You are just as much a moron as t he writer of that article. Kevin James McAllister How have I harassed anyone? I’ve been civil to everyone, even though most of the people arguing against representation here have been rude to me, including you. You call me a moron. All I did was say that people shouldn’t be writing calling people “idiots” in a “professional” article. People like you and people like the writer of this article make this site look bad, because you call people idiots simply for sharing an opinion. How do you ever expect to have people listen to you when you’re so quick to attack them? GmailIsDown and gay people Sean im upset about the lack of transgenders in childrens games! Skelterz Yeah and homeless people there should be at least a couple of hobo’s around the mushroom kingdom asking for spare coins! rp17 I miss Birdo too… Zonark You forgot about people racing in wheelchairs. gerome lol, but mario kart atleast has the option to make a black or dark colored mii, tomodatchi isn’t giving the gay kids, teens, and adults the option to pair up with a mii of the same sex, that’s the problem. sure, sure, nintendo doesn’t need to give us any options, but we are their customers and i think that we deserve it. The Clockwork Being There are no blue haired people with funny ties in Mario Kart 8!! I want to be represented Nintendo!!! This is how people sound right now about Todomachi Life and how this idiot sounds with Mario Kart 8 Zorpix well iggy has blue hair. I’m just sayiiiiiin ;P Squid Mario rarely does his plumbing job. What, is Nintendo Plumbist? Squid We can’t dye our Mii’s hair What, are they Dye-ist? Graeme Lynch 91 up votes…Sigh. Didn’t I just read an article on this website about how loving and great people are on Miiverse? Something seems off… Pokémon Fan Probably, or how there are less female characters then male ones. Skelterz I agree the guy is an idiot if he wants racial diversity play fight night. Mr Ninty funky kong is black enough :p. but he is not in this game(at the moment) nWo4liFe Daisy is Puerto Rican. Morton is black. lilmc01 http://37.media.tumblr.com/daec9a459bb807888b9127039ee6a2e1/tumblr_mvw1vlgXpW1t0qadwo1_500.gif Someone Cool I think hes actually mocking racism … what a cunt. Bob Wilkerson Nintendo cannot be racist. I have proof Benjamin_nl hel le loe ja Alessandro Previti you won the internet wiimenonowiiu Thats funny Steve Hahaha! Mario Mario: HO HO HO HO HO!! XD Marioman21 Nice TheBrainJemin And eats and shoots fire like a Brown man. rp17 There aren’t even “14 humans.” Toad and Toadette are a different species. Then 5 of the 14 are babies so they have to match their adult skin color. Also Mario and Luigi are brothers so the are the same race. Then there is the evil counterparts to the them, Wario and Waluigi. Making these villians a different race would have been more racist. So basically Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi are white because Mario is. That leaves 7 white humans, 10 turtles, 2 metal characters, a dinosaur, an ape, and a shy guy… …but it’ll make that dude happy… Mario Actually, that’s not half bad. O-O Mercurio2054 if you want to see more than white people in the Nintendo World, play F-ZERO. Alexander O’Neil (F-Zero Maximum Velocity) Antonio Guster Kate Alen Samurai Goroh Baba Michael Chain Nichi ( Native American) T-X Wonderful 101 has Wonder Black and White! Mercurio2054 … Skelterz That one is clearly from from dry dry desert or dolphin shoals. Mercurio2054 this is Nintendo World Mercurio2054 i can’t delete my post? to bad., now im spammer. Michael Kelso That’s so racist!! Hahaha Vakua Dorn don’t forget, his business is located in Brooklyn NY Mithiragi Mario is not just any black man. He is Jamaican! matthew garcia Mario has a big Johnson like a black man Mithiragi Yeah, lol. Alex I hate racist people they hate for no reason. GmailIsDown actually, no. no one hates anyone for no reason. you don’t understand anything about racism if you have the naive concept that racists are just bad people who are born with the illogical hatred against a certain group of people. people become racists for many reasons, and many are just because they’ve seen, experienced, or heard too many bad things about a certain group of people, and so they form prejudgment or predisposition towards that certain group of people. say you bought a dozen of eggs from supermarket A, and realized that 9 out of 12 eggs were spoiled. since then, you simply want to avoid all eggs from supermarket A. are you being racist towards supermarket A? if supermarket A represents a certain group people, then yes you are. are you misinformed/illogical/bad just because you want to avoid all eggs from supermarket A? well you tell me. and no, people are not racists if they simply point out how ridiculous for some people to use the race card all the time. if anything, those people abusing the race card are racists. this is like the manager in supermarket A insisting that his eggs to be included in every dozen of eggs sold in japan. you see how ridiculous it is? Magnus Eriksson You sir know little about racism. Racism IS the illogical belief that the other group is dangerous and differs from omes own group. Thats the core in all racism from Herodot and Aristotle until today. Its the core in herrevolk mentality of 30s germans and the ethnopluralism of McCulloch and the identitarian/nouvelle droite movements. Its nothing but an irrstional mobilizing passion towards the other. GmailIsDown i’m pretty sure that is not how racism is perceived today. you own an apartment, you had bad experience with black people as tenants in the past, and so you are now more reluctant to accept black people as tenants. i don’t consider you have an irrational mobilizing passion towards black people just because you think most of them are bad tenants. however, if you made your option public, you would be accused of being a racist. Magnus Eriksson That is excactly how racism is perceived today. Individual prejudices based on experiences is one thing, but the categorical rejection of a group as a group, even based on individual experiences is something else. Its a particular to universal deduction that percedes the individual experience. The one with the bad experience didnt become a racist, he was one before he made the bad experience. If he didnt think through this categories he would just deem the persons as assholes instead of deeming a whole group as something different. GmailIsDown i don’t see how the categorical rejection based on individual experiences is illogical. it is like making a purchase decision among different companies. based on your past individual experiences you believe that one company is more likely to have defective units, and so you avoid that company, knowing that there could still be good units in that company. there is nothing illogical or irrational about it. Magnus Eriksson Of course its illogical. You treat all particulars the same way. You make judgement over a whole group based on one experience with an asshole. Lets say that one kid bullies you at school, would you deduce from that that all kids on the school are bullies? Thats illogical. gtosheex You are right in saying ONE experience is illogical. But that’s the thing – these prejudices of race today aren’t based on “ONE” experience. They are based on MANY. ~Having multiple good experiences with one company or group of people will make you go back there. Are you being biased? Yes you are – and for good reasons – you had MANY good experiences there. ~If every Indian person you’ve met smells like curry, will you think the Indian people on tv smell like curry? Yes, based on past experiences. Could you be wrong? Yes you could. But as humans we make perceptions regardless if its right or wrong. And it’s only natural to make those perceptions – for you to say making perceptions is illogical is… well… illogical in itself! ~As humans, we tend to take into account that when something is bad/offensive so we shouldn’t perceive it as true – but those things are in fact true. Just like today’s prejudices, we deny them because they make us look bad but they are in fact true – based on MANY experiences. Magnus Eriksson Where do you come from? gtosheex The real world – try it some time! GmailIsDown i don’t think you understand what i am saying. there are differences between “omg all black people are bad tenants and therefore they are banned from my apartment” and “there are too many bad black tenants from my past experience and therefore i’ll think twice before accepting another black tenant”. both are consider racism, and yet i don’t think the second one is illogical. from past experiences you know the likelihood that a tenant turns out to be a bad one is greater when the tenant is black than white, with no prior knowledge, and therefore you make a conscious decision to avoid black tenants. it is a logical decision based on simple statistics, where the data set is your past experience. using your bullying example, suppose your kid got bullied by many kids at school, and it might be logical to deduce that the school your kid’s at has more bullies than other schools (maybe because of the lackluster school policies, maybe because of culture, maybe because of demographics, you don’t know, and frankly you don’t care), and therefore you make a conscious decision to move your kid to another school. Magnus Eriksson Actually its illogical to deduce from particular to universal by definition. What you talk about is called induction, and thats not logic. You should look into David Hume for this. Its quite elementary. Rinslowe In my opinion. You are 100% correct. So much so that it hurt my brain to see you reiterating it so much. I think it’s best left where it is. The point is well made. But you cannot convince the unconvinced. Just so you know I have actually considered the argument. What my reasoning has issue with is that I am expected to believe the limited parameters of the landlord scenario. Most landlords devoid of any racial preconceptions would have experienced first hand that assholes are indeed independent of race. Even in light of having only bad experiences with “black” tenants. Although it would be easy to understand how the landlord has come to this thinking. It is indeed irrational to apply those experiences to a group. If I was this particular landlord, I would be questioning my own judgement of character more-so than the race of my tenants. For strong group opinions to be present, there needed to be some level of racial preconception to begin with. GmailIsDown Did you actually read my post? Why do you keep twisting what I say? Avoiding my response all together and piling up jargons is not the way to go. I have a graduate degree in applied math, and I know my way around jargons, and I know when people start to abuse them. so you are basically telling me all the statistic analysis is no good. And that the whole notion of predicting future outcome based on historical data is nonsense. From credit card fraud detection to weather forecast, people using those models are all not being logical. And that if you get burned by, fire 10 out of 10 times when you poke your finger into the stove, it is illogical for you to say that, ok, even though it may be illogical to deduce that I will always get burned by fire every time I poke my finger into the stove, based on my past experiences it is very likely that I will get burned if I poke my finger into the stove, and, therefore, I will avoid poking my finger into the stove all together. question that. And I,will question your sanity. It’s slang for compadre meaning friend…but usually only towards other Italian americans yugatsuj Ah yea i see but it could also mean the weak link in a the group….kuribo chestnut spirit ( roughly as the word is made up ). Had an Italian friend said never to let anybody call you one because it was a racial slur. bistricky I am almost speechless by Casey Malone’s review of Mario Kart 8 …… but I know that I can’t ….. or shouldn’t be speechless …… saying that Mario Kart 8 is racist is a stretch-by-the-furthest-degree. When you really “think” about gaming ….. you have to wonder if Casey Malone “considered” all those “M” rated games and with their inclusion of a wide-range of races in a negative light (calling out you Grand Theft Auto) ……. I suspect Casey Malone didn’t mind the negative stereo-typing of those (and countless) other games. I equally find it a shame that this review made it onto Wii U Daily …. giving credit to a review that was eloquently said to not deserve it. Sure bigots will survive until the end of the worlds days …. but to claim that Nintendo went out of its way to be racist by not including “specific” looking characters in their historic archives does more harm to the greater good of the mass-population of the world and pigeon-holes everyone as racist. Let’s put it this way Mr. Casey Malone ….. you sir are the bigot to me …. you sir think you are doing a service (maybe) but lets say Nintendo changed their historic character (which are based on innocence …. as opposed to “M” rated violence) and made then as diverse in race like you feel they should be ….. would they really be better for it, in your eyes …. or would I be correct is believing …. that then you would clearly say … they would be pandering to appear accepting to all races …….. Mario Kart 8 is not racist ….., and never will be …….. it is with innocent character for “all” to play …… without any sexual or gender or race bias and definitely not making a political statement about it …. and to me that is Correct! Cheers. Magnus Eriksson I find this joke kind of funny as it plays on racist sterotypical beliefs. But sadly its too often misused to stir up racists that they can hide their poor arguments behind of humour, and cling to the victim role as soon as they are confronted. The term political correctness is a wholly empty term used by racists to fill up with anything that suits them, like jew hatry, fear of blacks, womans rights and attacks on socialists. And by so falsifying whole sets of thoughts by terming confrontations “PC”. Its an sorry excuse to be a hateful piece of shit. Massmurderer Breivik wrote 1500 pages about how awful political correctness is, and after sending it out to 1003 emailadresses, blowing up the governments building and executed 69 kids on an island. Thats the outer edge of this self victimization. But there are more people believing the same shit, and many have proven to be on this page. Its so fucking classic. Pretending to be a victim of political correctness just because someone makes a comment about racial diversity in a game. You are the problem, not this Malone guy. And a shame that Kinsley fire up under such things. The problem isnt political correctness, the problem is that people to complain over such things have a better life than they deserve. ChrisCamp THIS , where’s the upvotes here? remove this article wii u daily – it’s just embarrassing Mercurio2054 i don’t think that Nintendo is doing this just because they’re racist… Nintendo: lets make all Mario World white because black suck… Magnus Eriksson I dont believe that either, and I dont think anyone else does that. But articles like this stir up the belief that anyone should have said such a thing, labelling it political correctness to delegitimize a valid argument and making oneself into a victims group. Thats classical racist tactics. Mercurio2054 well i don’t think that he can’t do the article (Mr. Malone), i know that some one have to talk about that. but (imo) if the game is the sims, GTA, Watch Dogs it’s more understandable than a Mario, Sony, Banjo, Mega Man or games like this line. we all know that you can have every single human being in the world happy, if i make a game i can’t include all the ethnic group, a game where i put Native American and North American character only will create a problem with the native american Brazilian people? I don’t think that the game is racist and because of that i think (me) that he don’t need to bring that topic with THIS game (i know he can). in the opositive side, i think that some people over reackted with this. Magnus Eriksson I didnt read Malones article as he was blaming Nintendo for being racist. But Nintendo are responsible for one of the most popular franchises in the world that adresses kids, and that makes them important role models. On a general Malone is right. Multinational companies should take diversity into the calculations. Now Nintendo actually are quite good at this. Look at Miiverse for example. Also Mario IS an italian plumber, and italians have been targeted with racist remarks as “degos” etc. But this Mario is not a mafioso, but a working man in a relationship with a princess. So critique comes a bit off. But the reaction against a remark, that still is valid, is much worse. People should watch themselves for partaking in mass self victimization like this. Its kind of dangerous. Mercurio2054 they should, and as you say, they have miivers, they have lot of races in F-Zero (black ones), but (imo) they don’t need to do that in all the Nintendo universe. i don’t know if get my point about The Sims (and blablabla life) can be criticized with things like races and sex… but no a fantasy game. well i may go now Arthur Sataine Just curious, how is it a valid argument in this instance? We have actual races in Mario Kart, not the illusion of race via skin color. Turtle dragons, mushroom people, weird shy ninja people, sky turtles, etc. Those are races. So how does Mario Kart 8 fail to be racially diverse? IwataSucks I only read the comments here because Magnus tells it how it is. jjbredesen You sir, just gained my eternal most highest respect i have ever given someone on this site, period. http://img.pandawhale.com/49352-Terry-Crews-upvote-gif-E9ZK.gif Illmatic1234 Kinsley must be let go Psytrix Spoken like a true far left fanatic. MetroidZero “…and grabs coins like a jew” ? Bob Wilkerson One of the stereotypes of Jewish People is that they really like money Ajackson The statements at the top are funny and true, the statements at the bottom are offensive and stereotypical. Especially the ‘coin grabbing Jew’ I mean come on!! Peter Lythaby All bases covered I’d say Niknique This… this is just so stupid. I’m just gonna buy my Mario Kart and happily play while paying no more attention to reviews. 16BITDAVE can’t please everyone. Is it the 30th yet? Andrew Gonzalez All these characters come from a fantasy world!!! iamserious This opinion piece needs to be taken down. This is not Wii U Daily quality material. John Zaccari I understand having a difference of opinion, but calling someone an “idiot” for that is a bit extreme. As someone associated with this site, I don’t agree with this wording. It should at least be categorized as an opinion piece rather than news. EDIT: And I am not included in any of these “we” statements. jjbredesen Absolutely agree, i don’t want to be rude, be it is extremely unprofessional to insult someone like that, and label it as a “normal” article. Reporting what Mr Malone has said is fine, but adding all of this opinionated idealism to the article, is unnecessary. Skelterz Nah people are just too soft these days mate c’mon its banter ain’t it. jjbredesen This is a serious, news website, and it is out of place to directly insult and individual, by misusing there position, horrible journalism! Skelterz No don’t be silly its been blown out of proportion were gamers not politicians everyone’s got there right to there opinion yeah so if Mr malone says there ain’t enough racial diversity that’s fine but if kinsley says he’s an idiot that’s wrong i don’t think so its freedom of speech i agree with kinsley. jjbredesen The right of free speech has nothing to do with this. There is something called the manners of the press, and you do not write how he did on this article, if you had this on your CV you would never get a job. Yes i agree that mr malone’s point was unnecessary and not really suitable for a review, but this is just not ok. Skelterz See yet again i don’t agree at least he said exactly what he thought i have more respect for someone who writes what they honestly think, than water it down for the masses, Would you honestly prefer every article you read to be false and PC. jjbredesen No, adding a little opinion at the end is good, but putting it in the title, and making an article to insult someone is a big no. Opinion is good, but not like this. Skelterz I don’t know mate its a little difficult to not insult the guy he’s clearly a petty guy mario kart has been around for 20 + years nobody has ever said that rubbish before jjbredesen This is how the article should be written: Mario Kart 8 reviewer criticizes game for lack of colored characters Although most reviews have been positive Paste Magazine calls Mario Kart 8 racist, for using only white human characters. So far reviews of Mario Kart 8 have been positive. Except with one review from Paste Magazine, whose reviewer, Casey Malone, criticized the game for not having enough diversity when it comes to skin color. Malone said the following: “When it comes to human characters, Mario Kart 8 is overwhelmingly white. Of the 29 drivers, 14 are human (including Toad and Toadette), and every single one of them is white”. This is not the first time Nintendo has been criticized for not being able to “appeal” to all of its consumers, as recently Tomadachi Life was criticized for the lack of same sex marriage. Personally i don’t think the reviews has a point, as a lot of different cultures and stereotypes are represented in the game, such as Mario’s Italian pasta eating personality. What do you guys think about the subject? That is proper journalism, not HE IS AN IDIOT FOR HAVING AN OPINION!!! etc. Skelterz Yeah but its in john’s opinion that he’s an idiot you keep contradicting my point. jjbredesen Yeah, i know it is his opinion, but you do not use the word “idiot” as a journalist when it comes to stuff like this. Bruno9729 It’s OPINION & stop commenting everywhere. Jesus. I understand John was wrong. But we get it that it’s very unprofessional of this site. But the people here don’t need you commenting on this site telling everything that it’s wrong, cuz they know it is. I don’t come to this site regularly, but just give em a break. jjbredesen I am apparently not allowed to comment lol, would you like to explain what you mean by commenting to much xD John Zaccari Just noticed the article has since been changed to opinion. A step in the right direction. jjbredesen Yup, that does help, but it does still not excuse that he called him a idiot, but hey we all make mistakes. Kevin James McAllister Agreed. I don’t mind that he disagreed with him, but this kind of attacking is not what I come to the site for. I come to the site to learn about new things coming to Wii U, not to hear one of the writers complain about a review they don’t like. Skelterz Its news its fact this guy is a douche. kinsley FTW CEO NOA !!!! GREAT ARTICLE Bob Wilkerson I agree that the name calling is a bit much but I do think it is a stupid opinion to have about a video game. I find that the people who go into playing a video game or watching a Movie/TV Show and feel the need to point out that it left out a certain race, gender, sexual orientation are the ones that are the racists. Just take the game for it’s entertainment value as it is not real life. TheHaydenator This has to be the best article ever written by John Skelterz literally john kinsley = Goodbooks that last bit about dislocating the shoulder genius. Kevin James McAllister Then he should find a new profession. He won’t get jobs at major gaming publications writing trash that attacks others for their opinions. Yoshifan3 boo hoo, im butthurt that someone used the first amendment dear golly me! this site is retarded and this piece should be taken down. i dont like people using the first amendment.. Skelterz hahahahahahahahha Kevin James McAllister This has nothing to do with the first amendment. The first amendment means you won’t get arrested for saying something. The first amendment has nothing to do with a gaming news site trying to maintain integrity. TheHaydenator I found this article more entertaining than other sites like IGN or Polygon Skelterz Damn straight Kinsley for CEO Jason In Japan, the ethnic groups are 98.5% Japanese, and 1.5% other, so you can’t blame them for the lack of non-Japanese people. Also, you have Mario, Baby Mario, Metal Mario, Luigi, and Baby Luigi who are Italian. It could have been really easy for Nintendo to make every character Japanese, but they didn’t. So quit complaining. Mario Seriously? -_- Zorpix well, Yoshi is green. I want more proud green women of color represented in my games!! TheHaydenator Rainbow people! Zorpix RAYNBOWZ 😀 jjbredesen Zorpix, this article is unacceptable! Insulting and individual like this is extremely unprofessional, and should AT LEAST be labeled as an Opinion article, horrible journalism. Why is Kingley allowed to post this? Yoshifan3 its called the first amendment. people have a right to post this. jjbredesen But, it is not acceptible to misuse you position for something like this, a serious website does not do this. Yoshifan3 when has this site ever been serious? you obviously dont know john, he says whats on his mind. doesnt give a crap what other people think. jjbredesen Listen, i tell people what i feel and don’t give a shit, but this is a formal site, not a debate site, that is what the comment are for. Michael Hancock Articles are meant to be interesting. Every time I refresh this page, there are 5 new comments. Hence, good journalism. Relax, bro. jjbredesen No, it is not good journalism, i could write an article saying NINTENDO SUCKS and i would get hundreds of comments, getting people to visit is not good journalism, it is bad, and as a member of the press, you do not do that, if this was a newspaper ) this website could risk getting fined, and be forced to remove the article, for breaking the rules of good press manners. I do agree with the article, but you do not show your opinion in this way. Moreck I absolutely agree with you. Calling someone names -in the title of the article no less- is simply bad journalism. The internet is slowly dragging the field down with it a little more every day. jjbredesen Yup, good to see not everyone has gone crazy. Yousif Alromaithi Seems true on mistbof what you said, but John does that to add some flavor in Wii U Daily. I agree his writing feels stupid and bound to make some flame war. But then again John thought about this before writing. Michael Hancock “Nintendo sucks” would not be news. What do you mean by “you do not do that”? On what authority? Moral authority? This article describes an event, news. Naturally, the writer’s perspective is apparent? How can you avoid your own perspective? Look around your own corner? ChrisCamp your right, i believe the term is “clickbait” Zorpix articles are meant to spark debate. The fact that it’s tagged as an opinion article means he’s allowed to throw his opinion in there as well jjbredesen Yeah of course, but there is a line 😛 Zorpix eh. I suppose. but that line is set by the author ChrisCamp A proper opinion article at least does the source material justice. Which doesn’t happen here. It’s stirred people up against Kinsley when the guy gave MK 8 an 8.8/10 and brought up his concern with the diversity in a manor that was professional and reasoned. The reaction doesn’t match and makes people look crazy Zorpix Have you READ the Zorpix den? Super serious bizniss >.> ChrisCamp And zorpix has a contributor to this site you should take the comments section a bit more seriously when people find the content objectionable. Making fun /light of it doesn’t help the issue and just shows the unprofessional-ism of your staff. Zorpix I was taking it seriously when people were upset. I’m just having a bit of fun to calm everyone down. I was serious in a few other threads. Zorpix But if it makes you feel better, it’s being taken quite seriously behind the scenes. There’s a discussion gonna happen. That’s about all I’m allowed to say. Zorpix I agree about insulting the individual. But you’ll have to talk to management about that one. It IS labelled as opinion, so I mean, there’s that jjbredesen I know, that he is the co founder of the website, but does Ashley, not check on everything before being posted? Zaccari, was not happy about this artice either, but i understand what you are saying. Zorpix It’s labelled as opinion. He could be less blunt, but he isn’t. I think maybe we need a little disclaimer that the individual author’s thoughts don’t represent the view of the site jjbredesen Yup, that would be smart. Hope constructive criticism is not taken the wrong way 🙂 Zorpix eh… you were pretty brutal ;P maybe both of you were a little bit off color jjbredesen I am brutal yes, but i am commenting, not writing an article, but yes when i read my comments now, i did come across a little bit more rude than i though :/ and now i see its in the opinion part, my rant has no purpose, but still a bit to much with the name calling. Zorpix yeah, it’s a bit much on his part. I was kinda shocked when I saw it too. But it’s his article, so I mean, it’s his deal. JB KIngsley could have just taken a page out of your book (and I believe Ashley does this as well) Write the piece, then write your opinion on the matter in the comments section. That seems the more tasteful way of doing things if you’re going to resort to insulting folks, I suppose… Zorpix Well, it’s personally not my style to insult people like that. But it’s his, and it’s his opinion article. That’s how it goes. In Zorpix Den, I always include my opinion in my articles. Because they’re labelled as opinion articles, just like this one. I’m not necessarily okaying his insult, but I’m not saying he’s not allowed to. JB I’m fine either way 🙂 Zeus knows I’ve read a whole lot worse on the interwebs… Lol Zorpix At least we’re not the worst ;3 JB Haha! Actually not bad at all. WiiUDaily is one of my favorite sites and one of the few I check frequently . I quite enjoy the community here, even if it is super passionate at times. 😉 Zorpix passionate is a… fun word XD But everyone knows your favorite articles are Zorpix Dens ;P JB But of course, Zorpix! Lol The Clockwork Being By John Kinsley ON MAY 17TH, 2014 IN OPINION WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT!!! It says in opinion! Edit: But in regards to the insulting part I do agree Zorpix ding ding jjbredesen and now i feel stupid….thanks for correcting me :/ Zorpix I missed it too jjbredesen But i went on a rage, you stayed mature about it, so i stepped out of line. Zorpix everyone does at some point. it’s all good 🙂 Mercurio2054 do you see the list of non White players that i post from F-Zero World? there will be people saying that we need more ethnics there. The Clockwork Being But jjbredesen i might have come off as insulting when I corrected, my bad. But like I said I do agree on the insulting part. jjbredesen But i insulted Kingley on a much higher level, i stepped out of line 😛 You had every right to do so. Magnus Eriksson Its still a shitty article. Politically corectness got nothing to do with this. jjbredesen Yup, can’t believe it! Skelterz You’ll never guess what i’ve just seen on the ign site someone saying that reggie posts all the time on wii u daily hahahahahha i can’t believe someone actually fell for it! http://uk.ign.com/articles/2014/05/16/what-is-nintendos-e3-mystery-3ds-game jjbredesen LOL! Well i am glad i was able to trick someone 😀 http://uk.ign.com/articles/2014/05/16/what-is-nintendos-e3-mystery-3ds-game#comment-1391377328 ChrisCamp jj — granted that the article is labeled opinion doesn’t change the fact it’s so poorly written and takes the source material out of context. im considering never coming back to wiiudaily again. it’s a site obviously run by immature kids jjbredesen Agree with you on that, i still come here for the comments though, and Ashley and Zorpix write good articles. Jason Isn’t Yoshi a boy? TheHaydenator I think Yoshi’s are genderless Daniel Gonzalez Or both genders. triplegamer3K . HERMAPHRODITES FTW! :3 00EpicGamer00 I think you’re correct, it kind of makes sense. All yoshi’s lays eggs, so they’re part female. But all yoshi’s must have the male “part” as well. So that, that yoshi can reproduce with another yoshi. So, all yoshi’s are part male as well. It’s kind of hard to explain. It’s one of those things where it sound better in your head than on paper. Daniel Gonzalez Assexual, in other words. Zorpix which is why we need more women! Jared Lytle HEY GUYS LETS TAKE ZORPIX’S YOSHI COMMENT AND MAKE THAT MORE INTERESTING THAN THE ARTICLE. Like for example how birdo is a boy and yoshi’s are genderless yet they are a couple. Feel free to contribute more nintendo trivia Zorpix I don’t know what I did ;~; Skelterz More articles like this please i like a good debate i think if you make him take this down it will just show what a sorry state the world is in where feelings and politics get in the way of classic old fashioned debate and banter if people are to emotional to hear what people like kinsley has to say head over to IGN for some soft core journalism. Zorpix I dunno. I like a good debate as well. It’s news, and it was reported on. It could’ve been presented in a more professional fashion (or labelled as opinion). Thanks for supporting this article! Joe Fraley Kevin is right – this is a highly unprofessional slam article. It’s only claim is that some other journalist is a fool, which is a) totally un-newsworthy, and b) pretty inappropriate. This is all setting aside that the author of the cited article is clearly NOT an idiot, as is evidenced by his writing, even if he has one bad suggestion for a simple way that nintentdo can try to help people more than it does. And for the record, it’s hard to see how diversifying the cast, fantasy or not, is a bad suggestion. Frankly, the fact that the characters are entirely the fictional product of fantasy makes it seem even easier to diversify the extent to which nintendos customers are represented – contrary to what some posters seem to be saying about the fantasy element delegitimizing such issues. Yoshifan3 then go create your own news site. go create your own video game. jjbredesen Dude, that is just immature, it is out of place what he has written. jjbredesen / This kayodoc Being politically correct is the stupidest thing that people are conforming to in America. Nowhere else in the world have I heard of this happening to the degree that it’s happening here. Just plain stupid. Humans are ONE RACE; color plays absolutely no role in any equation. The people that push forward these stupid ideas are the same people that have racism hiding inside of them. The Nintendo world was created as an image of Miyamato’s imagination (along with a few others). It’s absurd to tell the company to alter a man’s creative vision to please people that are racist themselves. The bigger deal people make of these nonsensical topics the more they’ll continue to exist. This same thing applies to the recent Tomodachi complaints…absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes I wish aliens from a distant universe would attack us so we, as humans, would unite and forget our differences. Purple I couldn’t have put it better. Exactly!!!! Jeffrey Floyd These days everyone has to please everyone. You can’t say anything or do anything that may offend someone without some sort of stupid political correct backlash. Even if there is no real issue. Fifi Larns Amen 🙂 ! Yoshifan3 http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111222140534/uncyclopedia/images/b/bf/Audience-clapping.gif Diaz Look at all those white people clap in agreement. Yoshifan3 lol i didnt realize that. Skelterz There are blacks in the photo there just all polishing the white mans shoes Yoshifan3 NOW THATS RACIST. Skelterz it was a joke lol but to be fair looking at the photo it wouldn’t be far from the truth thats quite an old still… Yoshifan3 im not offended lol i knew it was a joke. Skelterz Haha cool Diaz That’s actually really easy to say if you’re white and playing the “color blind” card. The reason why this is a big issue in the US is because racism is something that is very much alive here and people are affected everyday by it. It may be stupid to point out social inequality in a foreign made video game but to actually tell people that their race is not important is just wrong, especially when there are people dying everyday because of it. Daniel Gonzalez I went through it when I was young, but these days, it’s rare that I come across someone who has a problem with me due to my ethnicity. Of course, I live in a very diverse town, so I don’t have to see this kind of ignorance often. Magiphart “That’s actually really easy to say if you’re white and playing the ‘color blind’ card.” That in itself is racist. Diaz If you believe having your racism pointed out to you is racist then you’ve clearly never been the victim of racism. Magiphart Huh? I’m saying it’s racist to make general statements about a certain race, as what you did in your comment . Michael Hancock Humans are one race? Daniel Gonzalez Yes. They always have been. People like yourself, are why the human race is still struggling to get over their ignorance. Thank god your type are a dying breed. Michael Hancock You obviously do not understand what race is, but I am sure you’ll get your 20 upvotes. Most people are stupid. You’ve done nothing to define this theory that race does not exist. Instead, you chose to make a morally uplifting statement that produced warm and fuzzy feelings in your heart. How did you feel when you were typing that? Empowered, happy, euphoric? Mercurio2054 las razas existen. pero eso no deberia ser motivo de problemas por que al final todos los seres humanos tienen las mismas necesidades y las diferencias entre razas son muy pequeñas. Diferencia tenemos con los monos y somos 99% iguales en el ADN Mercurio2054 i don’t know a game where i see a Dominican, and i don’t care. at the end i’m playing with a human being or a dinosaur or a monkey . Michael Hancock http://www.richarddawkins.net/news_articles/2014/5/16/skeleton-of-12-000-year-old-girl-could-show-where-first-americans-came-from# Daniel Gonzalez Well said. Magiphart Tch, aliens would kill us first. Jeffrey Floyd So I don’t typically read this guys articles, and I’m not going to hate on him for this, but I don’t see the point of bringing up racial diversity in Mario. There are Mii’s that can be whatever skin color you make them sure. There is a lack of skin color diversity sure but it’s Mario, a game where plumbers jump on Koopas, wear animal suits, and have had fun in space. Mario isn’t really the right game to bring this up as a serious issue. 00EpicGamer00 Wow, just wow. So this guy is complaining about Mario Kart not having dark skinned people? A fantasy game with humanoid turtles, dinosaurs, mushroom people, and ghosts? What an idiot, lol. Besides, isn’t there dark skinned pintas in some of the courses? Jeffrey Floyd Yup. Black, blue, yellow, pink, purple. They could be the colored humanoids this guy is looking for. 00EpicGamer00 Exactly, oh wait, they’re not actual humans. So it doesn’t count, lol. Mario Yeah… I think he forgot to point that out. :-p nin-10-doughfan this is what they do in life and it is everything for them! DESTOROYAH!!! Mario’s Italian not black, So why would you expect black people? Sean this is the kind of shit people complain about when they don’t have real problems in their life themizarkshow …they could at least include Shadow Mario #bracesfordownvotes Jared Lytle I’M SORRY BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR GALAXY BRETHREN WHAT ABOUT COSMIC MARIO GEEZ THEY REALLY DON’T WANT TO APPEAL TO US ON A GALACTIC LEVEL Purple Bhahahahaha that made me laugh. Dáibhí wotshissurname How the hell are Toad and Todette human…? Purple you know … ever wonder why are all the goombas in Super Mario Bros. brown?… and why does Mario stomp on them? Mario’s creator is racist toward Mexicans since ya know… mexicans are brown. Diaz I love how this post just exposed all the racist people on this site. TheHaydenator EXPOSED! IRJason This is why racism can’t end. There’s to many immature people that make dumbass comments like this. Name one black character from the entire Mario series. Do people really have nothing better to do with themselves then to link everything to racism. Grow the fuk up dumbass Jeffrey Floyd People can be over sensitive and take every other opportunity to start something and say it’s racist. jjbredesen I am offended as a Marsian to not have someone from Mars to be in this game! But in all seriousness this article is uncalled for, and is not what belongs on the frontpage of a website as big as WUD: Michael Hancock This game is about a race, not race. Jeffrey Floyd I see what you did there. Zorpix I like you Purple But in all seriousness it’s a fantasy cartoon Kart racing game… perhaps if it was Mario Football or Mario basketball there would be cartoons of color. Jared Lytle ARE YOU SAYING MARIO BASKETBALL NEEDDS COLORED PEOPLE BECAUSE WHITE PEOPLE CAN’T PLAY BASKETBALL!? YOU ARE SUCH A RACIST FJDSALFJS Sjan Preston All these white people pissed about POC wanting diversity and representation. POC sure are the ones with the problem here. Clearly. Mario I’m not! I just don’t see the point of this article when the fictional world of the Mario universe is composed of humans, talking mushrooms, turtles, monkeys, apes, dragons, dinosaurs and all sorts of humanoid creatures. ZeldaFan83 Oh wow…yeah the developers must be racist according to this guy considering the developers are Japanese and the characters are apparently white while Mario and Luigi are Italian plumbers, donkey Kong fur is brown yet under that I doubt his skin is white. This guy is a moron, could he not find anything wrong or negative about this game in his review so he had to play the race card. Nintendo creates their games to appeal to a wide variety and I doubt they think about what color their skin is. Jeffrey Floyd When there isn’t a problem they always play the race card. ZeldaFan83 Yeah its sad. I don’t think many people know this but it has been scientifically proven that the color of skin is affected by the sun, temperature and climate of where you are located on the planet, it doesn’t happen over night but does happen over many millennia. That’s why those from Africa have darker skin from the intense heat so your body over many thousands of years builds up a defense against the sun hence darker skin to battle sun burn and sun poisoning while those in colder climates and higher altitudes whose bodies build up a defense to cold weather and don’t get as much sun especially in areas of the world where there are mostly large cloud banks year long which essentially blocks a good portion of the sun and heat from the sun have lighter skin and once again this happens over thousands and thousands of years. This guy needs to realize that color doesn’t matter, we’re all human beings. Mario You said it brothah!! 🙂 jjbredesen I think you have it wrong, we where all originally African, and have a gland, that gives us a darker pigment to resist the sun, when we moved to darker, less colder places and became more lazy etc. we no longer needed that gland to produce the pigments and became white. There are cranial differences, and certain other bone differences in the feet of black people, and they generally have a higher hormone level, because of this gland. Apart from that we are extremely similar, but on the debate on us being different races, it is like comparing a Golden retriever and a Labrador. If you cross them you will get something in between, we are all related somehow, and dogs are to, so we are actually different races, if using the term in a scientific way, but we are all human, and are equal, and all of us are just as capable of everything no matter what, but there are certain genetics that do affect some things, Asians tend to be smarter than White people if you look at statistics as an example. Even if you are a creationist, you still believe we come from Africa. GmailIsDown if nintendo came up with a black mario, i bet this guy would be talking about the lack of black facial features. if nintendo came up with a black mario with black facial features i bet this guy would be talking about nintendo stereotyping black people. race card all the way. Jeffrey Floyd Imagine if we didn’t have video games and this wouldn’t be talking about this. What would have a fault like in instead? Books for no social diverse main characters? Kevin Sepulveda As a gay man I am upset that there is no Homosexual character representation in Mario Kart 8! I am going to sue Nintendo and create pages and threads about this topic until at least one other person cares that Mario Kart has no Gay characters! *Sarcasm* Scott Mitchell Political correctness is going to destroy this world. No one will be able to say or do anything without offending anyone. I for one am looking forward to this game. Saw the game trailer when I went to see Godzilla. GmailIsDown is Godzilla a good movie? Scott Mitchell It was alright. Godzilla should of been in the film more. Gabe Hoffman Whoa whoa whoa you actually saw the trailer for this game in the previews for Godzilla?! Scott Mitchell Yeah. I was surprised. ZeldaFan83 What about when they add dry bones to the game if hes not already there, is someone gonna complain about the color of his bones? Dimitri Soto true and humans are all the same species, if theres a picture of a black dog on a poster is that racist to the dogs? Moreck Honestly, I’m not surprised by this. I’ve been playing Nintendo games my entire life, and I’m white. However, it’s occured to me over the years that EVERY single major Nintendo protagonist has blue eyes, with the exception of Sheik (who only has red eyes because he’s in disguise.) This has bothered me for a long time, though I’ve never voiced it until now. GmailIsDown japanese like white people with blue eyes. Moreck …and that grants them exemption from exhibiting diversity? Nintendo runs headquarters in the US too. Relick No but the US is not the primary market in Iwata’s eyes. GmailIsDown since when exhibiting racial diversity in a video game has become a law? this is a fantasy world created by a japanese, who doesn’t give a fark about ridiculous gaijin rules. Dimitri Soto ummm yes it does, it’s there game they can design it how ever they want…don’t like it don’t buy it Mario I don’t remember Donkey kong having blue eyes. Or Pikachu. Or Ness. And the Ice climbers. ben The issue has nothing to do with Blue eyes being a white person thing. Japanese people often wear color contacts. They just think blue eyes look cool… It is as simple as that. Gabe Hoffman I can tell somebody was hungry for clicks Sdudyoy This is so retarded that it makes me laugh, honestly since when has Skin color mattered in a Mario game? I’m not racist in any way shape or form, but this is ridiculous, how many people actually care? peeer “I just hope that Mr. Malone didn’t dislocate his shoulder while patting himself on the back when writing his review of Mario Kart 8.” LOL thats a good one… I really don’t get his point in wanting more diversity in skin colors in a game like Mario Kart. That guy doesn’t get what Mario Kart is all about or he is wanting to start a debate about Nintendo to never using skin diversity in any of their games. condor87z Wow I never thought about how white the cast of Mario really is. A little diversity couldn’t hurt. Mario Yoshi’s green and Toads aren’t human. :-/ condor87z It’s implied I was talking about the humans. Instead of making baby characters maybe they could add diversity. Mario Yeah… Just let Miyamoto do his stuff. OK? condor87z No I will stop him! Mario How? condor87z Arm wrestling contest! Mario Good luck with that. -_- condor87z Sorry I thought I would respond with a silly reply because you included Yoshi’s being green. Mario Right… -_- Carlos Coronado Well you have the Mii’s they are any color you put them and they are in Mario Kart YiyeUniverseMB It’s not as racist as going “Right we need a black character so let’s put one in.” Someone Cool Exactly right. anonymous64 How is representing minorities racist exactly? 00EpicGamer00 It’s not. He’s saying that it’s kind of rude to be like “alright guys, let’s put a black guy in here just for the sake of being here.” That’s what he’s trying to say, and I agree with it. I hate it when game designer put in a specific type of person or animal, just for the sake of being there. starwars360 DON’T CARE!!! I WANT THIS DAMN GAME NOW!!! 30TH MAY IS CLOSER TO US NOW!!! Patience is always come from hidden “KEY”. :):) Elitepwnsface Sounds like some liberal idiot to me. Kuromad Finally someone agrees with me. I want different color Yoshi’s! condor87z I do think it’s good to debate opinions and what not but you should not name call another journalist if you disagree with him even if you think his ideas are ridiculous. hahahero They’re not journalists. condor87z Well the debate about who is a journalist is still up for grabs I suppose, but people who present “game news” can be referred to as journalists. Either way my statement still stands. If you want you can imagine I wrote author instead of journalist. Derek This Malone guy is a loser who is trying to get attention Johan Veenstra hmm, create a black Mii… use it… BAM!! there is your extra skin color 😉 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KaArbIM6W0 Oni I can wholeheartedly say, I am black and this guy is a complete jackass. He wants to be another race so bad then use your damn Mii greengecko007 What’s interesting about things like this is that it usually isn’t minorities clamoring for representation, but white apologists seeking either to right injustices done in the past, or simply seeking attention. This appears to be the latter, and happens pretty frequently within pop culture unfortunately. I found Malone’s review, from which I obtained his twitter account. Like I thought, Malone appears to be a white male, obviously acting as one of these attention seeking white apologists. http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2014/05/mario-kart-8-review-wii-u.html https://twitter.com/caseymalone anonymous64 Regardless of your stance this is such an unprofessional way to start an article. JB The first thing I’m looking for in a game full of apes, dinosaurs, talking mushrooms, lizards and turtles is where are all the colored people??… Sure it was just a blurb in an otherwise positive article, but if anything, the cast of non-humans far outweighs the featured humans. (OMG NINTENDO!!! WHERE’S THE HUMAN REPRESENTATION?? LOL) On top of that, outside of the Mii’s there are only 7, all the main Mario characters. The rest are just metal/baby variants of them. So the authors number is skewed as it is. I digress… Daniel Gonzalez Why is this news? You know how you defeat racism in all situations like this? Don’t acknowledge it. Who cares what someone said about Mario Kart 8 or any game for that matter. Don’t even know why this is even big news. Lol. jjbredesen Thank god, for you coming here, get some sense in to these peoples heads. Daniel Gonzalez It’s sad that this is even brought up. I get it’s for click bait and ad revenue, but even this is low for Wii U Daily. Lol. I love when people bring up things being racist. Uhm…aren’t we all the same race? Human race? I didn’t realize being black, white, hispanic, asian or any other ethinic group made you a different race. It’s hilarious.Being multi-racial(hispanic, white and native american) I don’t care about these kinda matters. Last I checked, it was 2014, not the 1960’s. Lol. jjbredesen Yup, i also find it ridiculous that we are arguing about this now, and using the article, it does have a point that MK8 is far from racist anyway. I am slowly loosing even more faith in humanity :/ Sorry, but we truly are stupid. Daniel Gonzalez Yeah, it’s not racist at all, but I don’t believe that WiiUDaily should have acknowledged this and make it news. All it did, was cause people to react negatively. Lol. I do agree. We are all stupid in our own way. Racism being the lowest you can go of course. hahahero Yes, it is disturbing Wii U Daily allowed this article. I never imagined them stooping this low. Dark Lord Sauron i wouldnt be surprise ign gets that article put up on their site. greengecko007 Unfortunately it’s not just WiiUDaily reporting it. Googling “Malone review Mario Kart 8” yields many hits reporting on the same review, minus the part where Kinsley calls Malone an idiot. It’s a shame because this was obviously done out of attention seeking. Let’s be honest, who would be reading a Mario Kart 8 review on pastemagazine if it didn’t offer some outlandish criticism? Daniel Gonzalez True. Can’t argue with that one. Though, you would think that racism wouldn’t be such an issue nowadays. Lol. Especially for video games even. It is indeed attention seeking, and sadly, it worked. Michael Hancock “I didn’t realize being black, white, hispanic, asian or any other ethinic group made you a different race.” Of course it does. You just listed several classifications. Daniel Gonzalez I’m gonna take that as sarcasm. Lol. I’m sure different ethnic groups doesn’t qualify as a different race among human beings. Michael Hancock Really? Then why do we use the word racism instead of ethnicgroupism? Because certain groups of people possess a greater degree of physical and genetic similarity with one another than with other groups of humans. These are called races. I really don’t see what’s so hard to understand about this. I used hair style and clothing as examples of what does NOT pertain to race. My perspective of race is one of a BROAD spectrum, hence incapable of being NARROW. It is you who have ineffectively integrated race into a narrow chasm. Have a nice day. hahahero I’m also mixed. Half Japanese, half caucasion. So I have an interesting perspective on race; likely similiar to yours. It’s hard, and frustrating, but we need to ignore the ignorant masses if they refuse to be educated. Michael Hancock Your race dictates your perspective, admittedly. Therefore, what value is your opinion? Truth would have to be universal and lie beyond perspective. You mentioned education. Educated on what and on who’s authority? Thus far you’ve said nothing intelligent, but chose to empathize with Daniel’s ineffectiveness. How cute. hahahero Race is a cultural construct. Yes, clothing, hair style, even the smell the physical bodies of a groups emits (based on diet) are grounds for the classifications of race. Daniel is speaking of the human race here. He’s not wrong; it perfectly fits into the logic behind the concept of race. Skelterz It was an opinion the writer had that’s no different to the opinion of the reviewer its been blown out of proportion i quite like a debate on this site i’m not going to take a moral PC stance on this subject purely because the mass is Anti racist i’m not a racist myself but in mario kart it really shouldn’t present an issue i have never seen anyone else moan about it and the games been going on for like 20+ years honestly daniel this guy was just nitpicking anonymous64 Its mad, all these people saying ‘I’m a white, heterosexual, middle class male’ I don’t care if I’m not represented. Social justice Wario shame and name is a better strategy Zorpix Technically it’s an opinion article, so it doesn’t really have to be news. I’m not condoning the tone of this article, I’m just saying why it’s here Daniel Gonzalez Fair enough. Though, I stand by what I said. A topic like this doesn’t belong on a site that pertains to the Wii U. John should just start up his own blog and post it there. Poor move imo. Zorpix It does seem more like a blog post BrotherDump Im actually furious at this! And I never get furious! Shota Isn’t mr. Malone racist by bringing that up. anonymous64 No Shota he’s a loser that’s it Daniel Gonzalez Not exactly, but it does make him look like an idiot. Social justice Wario more like a man with “white guilt” syndrome Yousif Alromaithi Come on guys stop fighting on something foolish. This game is amazing Mario Kart 8 Wii U equals awesome. Social justice Wario so this guy is trying to play “impress the minorities while pissing on them” rather than Mario kart 8 this reminds me of Fritz the Cat scene where sjw’s are trying to impress a black man, and he jsut tells them off. JB The summary of this comment section’s opinion piece: crocodileman94 While I agree on what you’re saying, I think that the name calling is a bit unprofessional. Fred So it’s racist for a bunch of Japanese people to make a game about an Italian plumber? Magnus Eriksson Misuse of the term political correctness here Magiphart I don’t know if I’ve ever heard it used correctly then. babulibaba I agree, but let’s not call any one an idiot Pilu Skifte Grønvold Are you f….. kidding me Nintenjoe82 Pretty good headline! Donaald WOW! You would think that being in the 21st century witch-hunts would be over. JBeauregard I read this yesterday, but why go so aggressive and call him an “idiot”? I found his opinion to be pretty hilarious and far-fetched, but it really is just his opinion. I figure calling a fellow article writer an “idiot” is just as goofy as Malone’s need to create a race issue out of nothing. At the very least, I look at it and say, “Hey, the guy riled some people up and shared his opinion. While I don’t agree, he isn’t harming anyone with it and it sure as hell entertained me!” That’s what a mature person does. Pokémon Fan No that’s what a Yes-man good seer does. JBeauregard So if someone says something that you don’t like, and the words don’t harm or attack anyone, you’re just going to attack them because you don’t agree with their perspective? Sounds like a child to me! Pokémon Fan No I am not going to attack them. I am going to express my view even if it seems like I am attacking them. hahahero Thank you for being one of the voices of reason here. Nintendude The reviewer is one of “those guys”. hahahero What do you mean by “those guys,” guy? Pokémon Fan Really? How can you bring racism into a game where a majority of the characters are not human? hahahero What is the ethnicity of the humans? Just think about it. Kinda limited in choices; right? Just think about what you wrote, within the context of a global corporation. Pokémon Fan Look, Mario is Italian right? So Luigi is his brother so he has to be Italian as well. Wario and Waluigi are there evil counterparts so it would be even more racist if they were a different race right? And the Princesses are either from space (Rosalina) or the Mushroom Kingdom (Peach and Daisy). And then there are the babies which have to match the skin color of their adult counterpart. Then everybody else is not human (unless you count the Toads which I don’t) so not really. And you can play as Shy Guy who is Indian (look up Super Mario Bros. 2 and read about the Japanese counterpart to the game) and your Mii which can be any ethnicity you want. So yeah… Pokémon Fan Thanks to everybody who read my above comment through! Spaniard0069 Bob-omb and Bullet Bill are black. Do they count? Pokémon Fan No. You can’t play as them anyway. Pokémon Fan He is the racist one if he can find racism in this game. He is obviously not paying enough attention to the franchise. Mario is Italian-American DK is a monkey and you can play as your Mii! Aleks “Politically correct” is not the enemy. This is not an example of a fair policy that seeks to represent all people. The enemy here is a stoopid reviewer creating controversey where it is baseless. steveb944 WOW. I’m appalled. You can create your very own MII. GEL Hell does any other producer have a bigger mix of main characters other than Nintendo and their Italian characters? He’s just trying to get hits on his article with this. Adrian Darn the Japanese for only including fair skinned mascot characters in their most recent installment of a 20+ yr old franchise. They clearly hate minorities. Pokémon Fan Well the most famous ones are either Italian or from the Mushroom Kingdom so they can have whatever skin color Nintendo wants. FutureFox I don’t know whats more shocking. The nature of the article or the fact John’s actually in Nintendo’s corner on this one. Strange times. Kenshin0011 Mii characters are playable and they represent any race of the user MarkyWiiU Wow… I’m ashamed of being white now ’cause my kind sounds really stupid… TheSkeletonMan939 . Donkey Kong has brown fur. That counts. hahahero Disgusting and not funny. You’re reducing people of color to non human primates. Kudos. How do you sleep at night? Oh, and fuck you Michael Hancock for up voting. You guys are revolting. TheSkeletonMan939 . I’m not saying black people are monkeys; you’re reading way too much into my comment. I’m just saying that there ARE characters who have non-white skin/fur/shells/whatever. It was a joke. Dark Lord Sauron some people take take racism too seriously and i dont think it should be in video game articles period Joe Fraley Is there even a link to an article here? condor87z http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2014/05/mario-kart-8-review-wii-u.html here it is. You’ll notice that he uses one small paragraph to mention diversity. Never calls Nintendo racist. Joe Fraley Thank you condor – is it sloppy to write an article about a free online journal and not even offer a link to the source? condor87z Yeah he should of included it. mario54671 Casey Malone responded to his criticism (poorly). http://caseymalone.com/post/85867484499/a-note-on-the-mario-kart-review I already wrote a response to his on the original review article itself, I don’t feel like paraphrasing: People hold Nintendo, a JAPANESE company up to America’s standards. Yes, I know, Nintendo has had a presence in the US for a long time. And they sell games in the US, so of course they must meet certain cultural norms. In saying that, it’s a fantasy game set in a fictional land, made by Japanese developers. How much reflection of reality do you want exactly? You’ve got Mario and Luigi who are Italian… and Italy isn’t necessarily known for having black people there. How would you add a black character to the Mario universe without it being blatant tokenism? I don’t think you can… hence, Miis. And even then, which “black” Mii do you choose? Does “black” always mean African-American? Can it mean African? Can it mean Indian? In a world where all the US triple-A titles are nothing but disgruntled thirty year old men with beards running around with guns blowing up nazis, Russians, Iraquis, etc… this isn’t considered an atrocious thing? NO, IT HAZ GRAPHIX LOLOLOL. And then the tone of your response, and then your reasoning for bringing this up in a MARIO game… it’s the stupidest reasoning I’ve ever heard. “I don’t have an agenda, I’m allowed to make stupid comments because I’m paid to!” Yes, I’m sure that was PETA’s reasoning to their take on Super Mario 3D Land, too. darkcreap “I just hope that Mr. Malone didn’t dislocate his shoulder while patting himself on the back when writing his review of Mario Kart 8.” This sentence is hilarious, loved it :D. Only thing I don’t agree about John’s article is calling the person idiot directly. Even if it is true, it is a plain insult. Sorry to be the “politically correct idiot” of this thread, but I had to say it. Having said that, I agree with this article completely. This politically correct people just unnerve me with their obsession for searching things to criticise regarding race proportions. Are you going to criticise The Lord of the Rings just because it hasn’t got black people (or the parts in which they appear they do it as antagonists)? Come on let’s be serious. One thing is being racist and the other is restricting creative liberty for including diversity for the sake of diversity. Does anybody, honestly think Miyamoto cared a fart about races or anything? Maybe he did, but honestly, I doubt it. He had an idea, developed a character and included it in his games. He didn’t create any black character? Well, maybe it was because the way he envisioned the characters didn’t include a black skin. Who cares? He also designed mushrooms, monkeys, dinosaurs, strange turtle-like creatures, etc. Steve Why the hell is politics sticking its nose in this? Would you stupid politicians keep your moronic idiology out of our faces. No body but you is getting offended. Get over yourself! hahahero Tell that to John. And politicians aren’t getting into this. Just civil social commentary. Jodina Joseph gta5 got a 10 and the online wasnt even working for a while after. i bet you have heard that a million times before tho. i was hoping for a 10 and am a little upset at a 9. granted, they should have used the gamepad in a way like f1 race stars did, where if there is just 2 of u playing then one uses gpad and other uses tv. i reckon that there will be an update for chat later on down the line. if u are scoring it in its current state then gta should not have got a 10 or it should not have been reviewed until it the online was working http://bit.ly/1jGbSgD condor87z I like the link to homedepot, that sure fits here. CommonSense Its a glowing review with a high score of 8.8. Nothing whatsoever that is being claimed in this article is actually true or actually happened. What the hell is wrong with you people? Oh, and great job John Kinsley , providing a link to the source you douchebag. Dont want people seeing what was actually said in the actual context it took place do ya? The only idiot stirring up controversy, or even MENTIONING the word racist is the moron who wrote this article and all the idiots circle jerking each other over it. For anyone who actually DOES have a brain, and IS capable of thinking for themselves here is the ACTUAL article in question. See this gamz girnoliz? Its called SHOWING YOUR SOURCES YOU INCOMPETENT MORON. http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2014/05/mario-kart-8-review-wii-u.html “Of the 29 drivers, 14 are human (including Toad and Toadette), and every single one of them is white. While it’d be atypical of Nintendo to introduce new characters into a Mario Kart game, it’s also where the deficit is the most obvious, and during play I found myself disappointed that Nintendo’s stable of characters so painfully fails to reflect the diversity of its audience.” Here is the FULL QUOTE. There is no criticism, their is no calling nintendo racist. There is an observation of a fact, and an opinion on said fact. And here is the devastating effect it had on the review. WHat could a man on such a mission have scored mario kart? a 5? a 3? a 1? Clearly a 1 sounds about right, obviously the guy only cares about making political points and intent on trying to RUIN mario kart 8 (which never happened, thats called a strawman that the gamz girnoliz did boys and girls, thats what people who are too stupid to form actual valid arguments do) Well, lets find out. “Despite these omissions, as glaring as the last one is, Mario Kart 8 brings back a type of game long absent from my living room. Sure, there are new power-ups to play with and new tricks, like dodging red shells, to learn, and it’d be nice if there were more courses. That all falls away, though, as the core of Mario Kart 8 delivers exactly what I wanted—a return to the “friends screaming at each other, red-spark generating, mercilessly hitting-each-other-with-shells” action that made the series fun from the start.” 8.8 OH MY GOD!!! WHY IS HE SCORING MARIO KART ON RACISM!!!?!??!?!?!?!? Oh… wait… condor87z Your profile name rings true with this comment. Kudos to you sir. Geoffrey Tasker Well unless this was edited this article doesn’t accuse anyone of racism either. The author just didn’t like the fact that race was brought up to begin with so you kind of went over board too. But like I said maybe this is a revised article idk. The title of the article is unwarranted. That’s for sure. CommonSense Look directly under the articles title in the big bolded catch line. ‘Apparently, Nintendo is on the verge of being racist with Mario Kart 8. ‘ Jim directly insinuates the paste reviewer of critisizing mario kart 8, in his review, and calling it racist… And then doesnt provide a link to the article in question so people can see what was really said for themselves. Geoffrey Tasker I over looked that completely. Thanks for pointing that out Geoffrey Tasker A black Mario character is a REALLY BAD idea. Mario is stereotypically Italian. In Mario 64 he falls asleep and starts naming Italian foods. I’m sorry but I don’t think Leroy Mario sleeping saying zzz fried chicken zzz water melon zzz grape drink zzz would go over well If you’re offended My point exactly. Maybe a black Princess but I don’t see any other way it would work (I should also point out that I am black since my dog is my profile photo lol) hahahero Holy shit. I can’t believe the stuff I’m reading on this article. WTF is wrong with you people? What bubble do you live in? There is a clear difference between AA stereotypes and Italian stereotypes in the 21st century. Because of my profession, public history, I can assure you there is a difference. I can’t believe what I’m reading on this site right now. C.S. Bailey “This is a case of the reviewer trying to be politically correct and stir up some controversy where there should be none.” But if the reviewer had said there were no homosexuals in the game, he’d have an army behind him, and no one would dare say that he was trying to stir up controversy…. darkcreap I honestly think people would have said exactly the same. Probably with more reason. It is clear that there are not black characters in the game (and actually no other characters from many races) but, how could you say that there are no homosexual characters in the game and justify it properly? There are some people that you meet and you could say “Man, there’s something about this guy that, you know, makes me think he might be homosexual” and other guys (I mean both men and women) that you see them and you don’t suspect, but you add them on facebook and they state it explicitly on their profiles that they are either heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual. And I have got a lot of surprises with that. “Really, is this boy homosexual?” or “No, way, is she really a lesbian?” or “Wait, bisexual???” So, no, you can’t know so easily about some people’s sexual orientation. Yes, some people follow common archetypes, but many do not. And not only with homosexuals, it happens with heterosexual people too. If you get surprises in real life, how could you know if Mario Kart characters are homosexual or not? It would make the claim to look stupid. At least with race you can say wether someone looks like a white man or black man just by looking at them. C.S. Bailey “I honestly think people would have said exactly the same. ” No one said GLAAD was “stirring up controversy” when they were commenting about Nintendo not having same sex marriages in Tomodachi Life. Graeme Lynch Clearly you haven’t been following the rhetoric during the Tomodachi Life fiasco. I really dislike when people just post things without actually having evidence for their opinion other than it being just that. THEIR ignorant opinion. C.S. Bailey Yes, that does suck doesn’t it? So what part of the fiasco have you not been following? The fact that this all started with an attempt to fix a glitch/bug and other people put their own spin on it? What was your opinion of the MK8 review that birthed this article in the first place? Lack of evidence!?!?!? Go read the review, then come back and tell me if that one paragraph is controversial. Graeme Lynch You said : “No one said GLAAD was “stirring up controversy” when they were commenting about Nintendo not having same sex marriages in Tomodachi Life.” I argued that the majority of comments made regarding that issue wither it be on WiiUdaily or Nintendo’s facebook page or IGN etc, etc were largely claiming it is all for controversy and feeds the gay rights ‘agenda’. So people were actually claiming a fuss was being made over nothing so I don’t understand your viewpoint. C.S. Bailey The article that covered Tomodachi Life didn’t call the person that started the Miiquality page or GLAAD idiots for their opinion, or accuse them of stirring up controversy. That’s my argument. What did this person write that was so terrible that Wii U “needed” to put him in his place? I find this article to be more of an example of mountains out of molehills than the paragraph that mentioned color or race. JcEp “Lets point out how annoying someone for noticing that everyone/thing_that_has_skin is white” I’ll just find a diff Wii U site I guess… Squid Let’s make Daisy black and give Waluigi a darker skin tone. Filipe1020 That’s not true, there is a black character, if you have a dark-skinned Mii that is. Stuart Thomas Casey Malone the co-founder of finelinecomedy , if we go to http://www.finelinecomedy.com/about/ i do not see any black, hispanic, asian, indian people in there. Well hell i just might have something to say about that, although I don’t go around trying to win racial points by announcing such idiocy. Malone you are a dumbass. WiiUPS4 Mr Casey Malone… Mario has a message for your review! A Mario Facepalm! Enough Said! Lil J Moore Mario and Luigi are Italian. So how is this racist? Shane Michaels http://th06.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/f/2010/262/b/3/mario_project___racist_by_bbmbbf-d2z1vpn.jpg Lil J Moore Don’t bring Palcomix into this Nintendo Of North Korea next Mario basketball game should add a Nintendofied Michael Jordan to shut up these people! Rob Bean I don’t understand how a video game with an all white cast, created by Japanese developers could be racist, but that’s probably just me. Justin Gray Easily the best writing I have seen on this site. GJ! Dan The moment I read this article, I burst out laughing. rgsgdgdgfdgxbvdg KIRBY SHOULD BE IN THERE Kobe My house is all white people. OH NO MY HOUSE IS RACIST!!! D: ….no just no hahahero what? Noah I, for one, thought the Koopa race have waaay to much representation in MK8. There’s tons of them, while the Yoshi’s only have one. That is obvious racism against the fictional Yoshi race. What pigs. pandaman27 I don’t care what your opinion on social issues are: clearly your worldview is a very, very young one. Just PLEASE take this awful, terrible article down. It single handedly has dragged the integrity of your journalism to a low I wasn’t sure wiiudaily could obtain. hahahero this is not “journalism” to begin with. Where have you seen an original journalistic piece. Wii U Daily crawls other gaming news sites and aggregates journalistic pieces for us. This is not journalism here, it is media covering media, or re-reporting others’ works. pandaman27 It’s not even labeled “opinion”. It’s just posted as if it was actual news, and reads like an Onion article. There is a discussion about race and video games to be had – this is not even competent enough to stand in as an opposing view. It’s dreck. yugatsuj I am not really mad at this…but i mean racial diversity could help nintendos whole image. It really kinda makes it hard to relate to certain characters or even certain games with culture and ethnicities are mis-represented in the most awkward and offensive ways imaginable…..new ip’s they develop ( if that ever happens ) should keep this in mind. FutureFox The only people who can really make that happen are the ones it mostly effects. Can’t expect a cat to make rubber chew toys for dogs. Its just not their world/experience. To anyone else reading this spare me the exceptional cases of a cat playing with rubber chew toys. Let’s get real here: most don’t. And no, cats don’t make anything other than s4!t. have a little humor with the analogy. yugatsuj I am on your side with this one, but the difference is so much cats and dogs or better yet small implication that dogs may make their own toys. but we are talking a honestly and truly small cultural difference. Japanese go out of their way to appeal to the european and white american market. and throw stereotypes at these rest. the best game to me are the ones that are heavily influence by japanese culture. And here is where i agree with you If racial diversity is wanted in video games then racial diversity is gonna be needed in the development process….and because that heavily lacks then we get what we see. Madmagican ….what exactly would a black character look like in the Mario universe? oO FutureFox Nobody would like the character. He could be stereotypical ( which most game characters kinda are for mass appeal) or he would be something that goes against everybody initial impressions of what they’d expect: something stereotypical. It just wouldn’t work. You can’t have say a black plumber because really nobody thinks blacks are even in those occupations though some are. If Nintendo made a black mechanic (any other brown person) then that world effect the Mushroom kingdom. Maybe that would introduce so interesting game mechanics, but they can already do that with current characters in tow. hahahero Wow. This is extremely disappointing. “you can’t have say a black plumber because really nobody thinks blacks are even in those occupations though some are.” Christ, where do you live? Crawl back into the hole you came from. The worst racists are the ones that aren’t even aware of it. Good day sir. C4 How would a new human character look like? Every one I can think of kinda looks like another Mario (Luigi, the 2 “evil” dudes) or Peach (the princesses) + their babies. They haven’t created a new human-ish character ‘from scratch’ since 30 years as far as I can see. Tsijiari cant you just make a mii with dark skin and play with it? Petri Because a kart game needs all the colors of the rainbow, and gay marriages. If you don’t shove racial diversity and gay marriages down people’s throats, you must be a racist homophobe. Rodger_Ramjet What a fucktard. Rodger_Ramjet While I’m at it I would just like to add that the PS4 is not all that good. My partners son bought a PS4 and I was watching him play 2K14 basketball and my god I was shocked how underwhelming it looked and played. WiiU just eats the PS4 for gameplay and visually the WiiU is not behind one bit, especially when you look at Nintendos and their 2nd games. hahahero Way to stir the pot there John. This was completely unnecessary. If you were going to pull this shit at least list it as an opinion piece. I reckon you watch fox news. figs28 The game has 30 characters with one being unlimited in choice of size, look and color. I bet if a Mario Kart featured a colored character that reviewer would be like “we have 13 white characters attacking 1 colored character”. Internet <3 hahahero Ok, I see the argument regarding the history of the Mario universe over the past 30 years. I get it. blah blah blah. However, I can not believe some of the comments I am reading on this article. It is 2014, I was hoping our generation, particularly gamers of our generation, would be a bit less racist. I guess I was wrong. Welp, lets try to raise OUR kids right. hahahero Oh, and good job stirring the pot with this article John. You’re just as bad as the individual who wrote the subject of this rant. Do I agree with his statement, meh, he raises an interesting question to mull over in these times though. I’m considering leaving this site. Good job for bringing politics into my escape from politics. GmailIsDown Oh, and i am sick of people who play the race card all the time and accuse people of being racist for pointing out that they are abusing the race card. hahahero You’re missing my point here guy. I come to this site expecting not the read garbage like this. Also, racism still exists buddy. I live in the South, see it pretty regularly. Sometimes people need to be called out on it if we are going to progress as a species. And yes, the “race card” get “played” when it shouldn’t; not arguing against that. GmailIsDown i am well aware that racism exists, and it will always exist as long as there are differences between different groups of people. it is just the way people’s brains are wired. you can force people to change their behaviors but you cannot change their attitudes. hahahero I disagree, I’ve changed the attitudes (were talking race here) of several people. I’ve also seen the attitudes of people (again, talking race here) change after they’ve educated themselves, and placed themselves outside of the conservative, homogenous groups they grew up in. Education is the key word here. You need some book learnin’. I recommend taking some anthropology courses. GmailIsDown i guess what i mean is that you cannot change people’s attitudes by forcing them to change their behaviors. you can punish people for being racists, but that are not going to make them any less racist. and i don’t think racism will disappear as long as there are differences between groups. often racism is just a quick and dirty way to summarize the tendency or likelihood that some facts may be true regarding to people in certain group, the tendency as perceived by a racist individual. hahahero Alright, I’m just stopping here. I usually make it a personal rule not to get sucked into these discussions over the interwebs. I guess it was just super late last night (this morning) and I was super irritable. I just wish opinion pieces like this wouldn’t make it to my gaming sites. They just tend to bring a polarizing and divisive element to an otherwise (mostly) stable community of individuals sharing a common interest. BTW, what does the egg mean? I think I’ve seen others with the same avatar. GmailIsDown that is fine. i don’t usually go off topic on a gaming forum too. egg just means i am logged in via twitter, and i don’t have a twitter avatar. Graeme Lynch I think what you are saying is you cannot change your attitude. hahahero Didn’t want to say anything (guess I just did!), but I read it the same way. GmailIsDown people who want nintendo to create a black character in an existing fantasy world are racists, not those who point out how stupid it is. you can create a black mii character to go into this game, but i guess racists tend to be too stupid to know that. hahahero 1- Creating a black character to go into the game is not the same as having the creator of the universe acknowledge the wishes of a segment of their market. BTW I’ve never heard of anyone requesting this. Just responding to your ridiculous statement here. 2- How is people asking Nintendo to diversify their cast racist? I’m not sure where you pulled that from as I didn’t bring that up…Fantasy universes have a tendency to change with the times and shifting demographics. You must fear change. Symbol de Au I’m so sick of seeing. It’s “insert year here”. hahahero Sorry, guess a lot of us expected more from ourselves in “insert year here.” Symbol de Au I would have hoped you grew out of your naivete by that year. LJay Absolute joke,i saw this on nintendo life and had to comment-how possibly could mario kart be racist??? what a self righteous arsehole that casey must be. Graeme Lynch And what latent racism we must have within us =) Andrew Longo this is the most appropriate article title i’ve ever read in my life. i HATE these attention seeking, delirious morons who feel the need to attack everything and everyone just for the sake of it. LJay That last bit of the story was hilarious btw! @john kinsley Petri Lets just be glad Mario was created in the 80’s. Coming out now, an stereotypical Italian plumber created by a Japanese dude… Nintendo would be in deep shit. sd Huh. I am surprised this angle was taken. Personally I would have focussed on it encouraging people to drive recklessly whilst throwing bananas and turtle shells at cars trying to overtake. This doesn’t even take into account the poor turtles that are being de-shelled. ufg This is a game set in the mushroom kingdom. The mushroom kingdom is populated by white people. You wouldn’t criticize a game set in Somalia for not having enough Jews, would you? Although, I am sure the Yoshi race is upset about lack of representation in “The Last Of Us” FutureFox I actually decided to look at this malone guys info online. In a few words he’s your basic attention grabbing wh0r3 in search for “edgy-ness” on the dullest of surfaces. Magiphart It’s just like the Japanese to not include black people in a video game. WiiUltra You know, for once I agree with you John. Nice article. DC777 Because Mario is “human” right… Deadpool U Because he is human the Princess and Toads on the other hand….. MujuraNoKamen Best headline ever! ScrewAttack Holy shit, I completely agree with kinsley! gworks There is a black character in the Mario Bros he’s named Bob-omb Wilks It’s not Human, he was complaining about the lack of Black HUMAN characters. Rocky Math How would it be racist when Mario is a franchise that are Italian people, made by Japanese people, and speak American English. ChrisCamp I have a big problem with this post WiiUDaily. Context is important. You did not link to the article, or quote in the proper context of the review. After “Google-ing” the article myself I see that Casey gave MK 8 and 8.8/10 and genuinely likes the game. To merely point out a lack of skin color diversity isn’t being an over the top politically correct loon. He did it in a way where he merely stated that he wishes there were more more options in this regard, meanwhile still praising the game. For you to have this reaction to a very small part of the review is a bit over the top in my opinion. This is the kinda thing that “Fox News” does. Not only is it bad reporting, you are stirring up a group of people against this writer without proper reason. Wii U Daily should remove this. If not for it’s misplaced argument, more for its sloppy writing – who wrote this, a 16 year old? JudgeMethos It’s being petty, sir. Simple as that. You can use a black, asian, or whatever Mii character if it suits you, so he coulda just left that out completely. That’s lame to even include in a game about characters kart racing in a fantasy world no matter how much of a “small part” it is. Critique the game for what it is, not what you want it to be. ChrisCamp But why the whole opinion piece about a few sentences in someone else’s review? especially when the review brought the gripe up in a way that was productive and not irate i’m right/your wrong kinda way. it seems blown out of proportion reaction and makes John Kinsley look bad in my opinion FutureFox Because it sticks out like a sore thumb. And when Malone says most the characters are white he neglects to note that all except Wario and Waluigi are just renditions of a core character (i.e Mario and baby Mario). They are just monsters. Where does it end? Why are there ZERO black characters in MegaMan? But seriously, the Shyguy is black. he just wears a mask to hide the fact. ChrisCamp While I don’t agree with the opinion, Kinsley could have illustrated his point in a far more professional matter. Instead he made the article a poorly written attack that appears to not be very well thought out. And for God’s sake, cite the material you reference in your writing Graeme Lynch I personally feel that this article suggests Kinsley is racist. It may not be overt but I believe, like you, that his opinion is blown out of proportion and conveys a real anger towards the challenge of white, heterosexual males discourse. hahahero Key word you use is “suggests.” First, the subject was not worthy of being posted on this Wii U news site (I use the term “news” loosely) to begin with, yes, my opinion. Its just devisive garbage that I would rather not see on a gaming site. Second, the manner in which the topic was handled and posted by Kinsley seems to be symptomatic of something deeper. I think you may have been pretty close to hitting the nail on the head here. But, we’ll never know for sure. The piece comes off as a vehicle for Kinsley’s attempt at being a soldier in one of the battles of our current culture wars. Kinsley is likely not a racist in the romantic sense, but, the idea of challenging said discourse does seem to upset him. Graeme Lynch I love you! Haha. It feels rare to find those who EVER agree with me on this site. FutureFox Cite what exactly? ChrisCamp What? the article that’s referenced in this post. he doesn’t even link back to the thing FutureFox I thought you meant me. : ) Symbol de Au “Critique the game for what it is, not what you want it to be.” That’s a really ridiculous thing to say mikeybruises I do not think the author is being petty at all. Firstly you were deceived by Mr. Kinsely. The author was not arguing for diversity in Mario Kart 8. He was advocating for diversity in Nintendo characters and that upon seeing the game (Mario Kart 8) it reminded him of the lack of it, consider it fan base is very diverse. Here is what he wrote: The other notable omission is in the cast of characters’ diversity. After 30 years there are still zero Mario characters of color, a problem that Mario Kart 8 highlights by lining up all the characters on a single screen. When it comes to human characters, Mario Kart 8 is overwhelmingly white. Of the 29 drivers, 14 are human (including Toad and Toadette), and every single one of them is white. While it’d be atypical of Nintendo to introduce new characters into a Mario Kart game, it’s also where the deficit is the most obvious, and during play I found myself disappointed that Nintendo’s stable of characters so painfully fails to reflect the diversity of its audience” As well you can see, the author’s thoughts read differently. As @ChrisCamp:disqus astutely put, Mr. Kinsley should have provided the source for the article. This is either sloppy journalism or was done intentionally. That being said, you are entitled to your opinion, but the author was seeking inclusion and one cannot expect to receive it, if one does not ask. Nullis In Verba mikeybruises I agree. I posted what the author actually stated. He was not arguing for diversity in Mario Kart 8, he arguing for diversity in Nintendo characters. condor87z Thanks for this! CapnCrumbles436 Yes, its definitely being an over the top political leftist loon. The Mario brothers series has always surrounded the story of two italian plumbers. Im not Italian and I frankly never cared. There is absolutely no reason why all of a sudden other racial groups should be inserted in the long standing series. How can such extremely sensitive individuals manage to make it through life? ChrisCamp You know what, that’s BS. When someone intelligently brings up race/questions the status quo it doesn’t give you or others a right to call that person an idiot/leftist loon/etc. If anything, it only shows yours and others insecurities about the issue. The reaction caused by this terrible Wii U “opinion piece” doesn’t match the tone of the original source material. JudgeMethos He can make all the racial characters he wants. They’re called “Mii’s.” FutureFox We have as far as generations go: Generation X, Generation Y(Why?), and what people today call Millenials are really just Generation Bitches. CapnCrumbles436 Agreed. And dont be afraid to call homosexuality evil, sinful, sexual perversion. It is. Will I be censored for saying this? Time will tell… FlashFan207 Hahahahahaha!!!! LOL!!!! What a dork! Mario Kart has probably the most “colorful” cast of characters in any game pretty much EVER!!! Pokémon Fan Hahahaha! Exactly! mikeybruises @johnkinsley Mr. Kinsley your response to the author is a bit over-top. To call someone an idiot in your title speaks to both your sensitivity on the discussion of race and your lack maturity. You may disagree with the author point view because you do not understand it, but there is some merit what he is saying. Firstly, he was not arguing for diversity in Mario Kart 8, he arguing for diversity in Nintendo characters and how Mario Kart 8 reminded him that there is still a lack of it. Here I will post what he actually said instead of just the excerpt you cited: “The other notable omission is in the cast of characters’ diversity. While it’d be atypical of Nintendo to introduce new characters into a Mario Kart game, it’s also where the deficit is the most obvious, and during play I found myself disappointed that Nintendo’s stable of characters so painfully fails to reflect the diversity of its audience” It is apparent his thoughts read much differently than your perception..or rather your interpretation them. Here is what you wrote; “Mario Kart 8 is a fantasy game populated by humans and animals and whatnot. The whole notion of “race” is just ridiculous when you have characters such as Donkey Kong and Yoshi and Bowser”. Again he was not specifically talking about Mario Kart 8, he was arguing that Nintendo may want to be more inclusive considering its diverse audience and that Mario Kart 8 reminded him that little has changed. I think one could reasonably argue that the author’s idea might be beneficial to the companies bottom line. In any case, I contend the point he makes is by no means idiotic as you characterized it. I can cite numerous peer-reviewed studies demonstrating how positive or negative images effects ones outlook on life, one of note conducted by Kenneth and Mamie Clark. But that being said, I do not think Nintendo is being racists. The author may not have considered that Nintendo is a Japanese company and they just don’t see race as issue as we do in America (assuming the author is an American). Here in America, some of its citizenry suffered through a brutal and bloody past in order to maintain white supremacy, which still effects how we relate to each other to this day. I further contend that this is what shapes this authors worldview. However in Japan, its course of history was much different. They don’t have point of reference to draw from. Thusly they’re oblivious and do not see things as we do and this is reflected in their expressiveness. It is unreasonable to expect diversity from them. However, the only way to get them to do so, is to simply ask. Graeme Lynch Man this rebuttal just destroyed Kinsley! CapnCrumbles436 You sir are playing the part of the fool. (Notice I didnt say that you are a fool, but that you’re choosing to play the role.) So sick and tired of nonsense like this. Everywhere you go today you find overly sensitive lib progressives crying, throwing their arms in the air demanding more blacks, women and homosexuals be injected into every aspect if life. Its Mario stinking Kart! Its the same cast of characters that have existed for decades. Honestly, seal it and stop bringing your perceived (and imaginary) injustices with you everywhere you go. “They (Japan) don’t have a point of reference to draw from”… “they’re oblivious”….”they don’t see things as we do.” Several major mistakes on your part. Firstly, that statement displays your own arrogance, declaring that an entire people group are oblivious to racial relations and identity. Secondly, you assume that everyone feels the way you do concerning racial relations in America. I guarantee you that there are millions if people like myself who arent anywhere near as overly sensitive and concerned as you are. Do you realize that white are a global minority? Why dont you go to Africa and demand greater representation and influence for caucasians? Why dont you do it in Asia? If you want to get into race relations this could get very long and messy, so why dont you and Kinsley do the world a favor, seal your trap and enjoy Mario Kart. mikeybruises “You sir are playing the part of the fool. (Notice I didnt say that you are a fool, but that you’re choosing to play the role.)” Is this a joke. Let’s be clear my friend, there is nothing you can say that would offend me. But the idea that you actually believe that you can qualify your declarative in effort show some tact, is quite laughable. I would not even call this a good try. “Several major mistakes on your part. Firstly, that statement displays your own arrogance, declaring that an entire people group are oblivious to racial relations and identity.” This would be true if this was in fact what I said, but of course that is not what I said. Once again here, we have another person taking someone’s words out of context. I will repost what I wrote: The author may not have considered that Nintendo is a Japanese company and they just don’t see race as issue as we do in America (assuming the author is an American). Here in America, some of its citizenry suffered through a brutal and bloody past in order to maintain white supremacy, which still affects how we relate to each other to this day. I further contend that this is what shapes this authors worldview. However in Japan, its course of history was much different. They don’t have point of reference to draw from. Thusly they’re oblivious and do not see things as we do and this is reflected in their expressiveness. My comments were clearly an attempt to explain why the author believed as he does and an attempt to explain why the Japanese do not see race as he might. I do not think any rational person would argue that the Japanese experience race relations as it played out here in America; which is what I made note of in my post. Subsequently, I did not say the Japanese were “oblivious to racial relations and identity” as you put it. I will repeat, they just don’t see race as we do here. Allow me to give you an example. A friend of mine is writing a book titled, “When did I become White”. In a nutshell she a teaches HS in NYC, and she immigrated to the US from Greece. What she began to notice and find very odd was the fact that people called her white when she never thought of herself as being white. I have friends from Romania and Poland who said they experience same phenomenon . My friend from Poland even got to an argument with people she met here because they were trying to convince her she is white. The point of what I am saying is people from all of the world do not share the same views on race as we do here. They do not behave or are concerned by it, and they live and express themselves in that fashion because its not even considered–and yes they’re oblivious to it like my friends were. Capiche? “Secondly, you assume that everyone feels the way you do concerning racial relations in America. I guarantee you that there are millions if people like myself who arent anywhere near as overly sensitive and concerned as you are.” Please cite in my statement where I assume that everyone feels the way I do? This statement is utterly ridiculous on its face. My post runs completely contrary to your assertion; I don’t understand how you could misinterpret that. “Do you realize that white are a global minority? Why dont you go to Africa and demand greater representation and influence for caucasians? Why dont you do it in Asia?” You clearly do not understand the point being made. So I will try to explain it once again. The author was advocating for inclusion; not for just one group of people and by the way, neither did he call Nintendo racist. If you do not understand that, then you’re purposely trying not to. I am curious as to why such a notion seems to elicit such a hostile response from you…its seems visceral. “If you want to get into race relations this could get very long and messy, so why dont you and Kinsley do the world a favor, seal your trap and enjoy Mario Kart.” My friend I do not fear getting to discussion about race relations with anyone. If you have something further to add by all means share your thoughts. As for shutting my trap, who is being arrogant now. If you do not want to continue to discuss the topic of this article then leave; no one is forcing to either read, or continue to both post, or respond to post on this thread. And if you want me to do you a “favor”, it will cost you. Finally, if you choose to respond to my this post, please make sure that it is at least a little more thoughtful and somewhat profound. Otherwise it will be duly ignored. See you on Mario Kart 8 and happy karting. Ninty The Rage Kid I found this picture in the comments of that review. http://cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/655/655251.jpg alexdodoll Use the Miis ^•^ brian Way to post a source, duhhh X3Charlie I don’t like politically correct idiots as much as the next guy, but I don’t think you should use terms like that in headlines. Random12multi Dear Kinsley, Thank you. For being positive. -Me Dark Lord Sauron mr malone must be really retarded to think mario kart 8 is being racist how stupid can people get in this country by bringing race into this seriously its just a game palomino blue Haha. First of all the only “humans” are Mario and Luigi. No one else comes from the same planet. blunite People are just being lame towards nintendo now days. First the same sex marriage complaint now they’re bringing up this racist stuff? I think people complaining are the racist ones. Racist just means you bring up race in your conversation, but prejudice means you do things to bring down another race, people just need to grow up.. Seriously. Wouldn’t it seem more racist to add a black or white dude out of the blue just because of this? Wilks You do not know the definition of racist or prejudice, please find a thesaurus. blunite Ok, but still, I’m not a Goddess and all knowing, sorry for the disappointment but I still think this is immature. David Horowitz It’s always a racist comment that attracts the most attention. This article’s in the website’s spotlight. Dominicruz mario ,luigi and the rest are italian ,DK and diddy kong are blacks ,the Shyguy is a nerd and the rest I ‘don’t know .but who cares about what race is they are .we just want to play and have fun ! 00EpicGamer00 Actually, I think Shyguy is Native American/Indian. His main weapon of choice is a spear. Native American’s usually used sears as their primary weapon, and in some cases, Shyguy has red paint designs on his mask. I know this doesn’t matter, I’m not sure why I care so much, lol. Dominicruz ohh my God you right I forgot about that I played yoshi island so much and I forgot about that ,thanks man you right! He is going to be my main now 🙂 00EpicGamer00 You’re welcome. Glad I could help. Actually, while writting this post I kind of did a bit of research on Native American culture. and I think I might have a theory as to why Shyguy wears a mask (this is assuming that he is Native American.) “Some tribes believed that when certain animal masks were worn during specific times that the person who wore the mask would take on certain characteristics of the animal depicted, they believed that the spirit of the animal would enter that person while they were in the mask.” (http://www.native-net.org/na/native-american-masks.html) So, reading this information, it made me think that…maybe Shyguy wears the mask that he does so he can try to be human. Obviously the mask he wears is a human mask, which made me think that maybe Shyguy is actually some sort of beast that wants to be human. This would kind of explain why he wears a mask all the time, and how he never speaks English, or any other language for the matter. When he is wearing the mask (all the time) the characteristics that he receives is able to handle tools correctly, and can think clearly. I don’t know, I might be over thinking this, but it’s kind of a good theory, to me anyway. Dominicruz Wow that was great I think I know now Shyguy thanks to you he is a mysterious Character and Nintendo is giving a chance to shine on mario kart 8 .You are the kind of person that a really like as a friend. if you have a Wii U please add me as a friend my Nintendo ID is Dominicruz . 00EpicGamer00 Thanks, I’d really like to add you too. But, I’m afraid I can’t. You see, when I got my Wii U, after I got the internet all set up, my Wii U did this stupid thing where it turned parental controls on. Thus, not allowing me to send or receive friend requests, or do anything internet related….I can’t even post on miiverse, lol. I can add you on my 3DS. It’s been a while since I’ve looked at my Wii U, so maybe it’s fixed itself, or something. Dominicruz yeah Try ,we could play mario kart 8 and smash bros asdfg I think people look way too much into insignificant things. It reminds me of this: http://www.salon.com/2013/10/05/the_legend_of_zelda_is_classist_sexist_and_racist/ FutureFox Wow a triple whammy. That’s like…… two whole extra whammies! CapnCrumbles436 Great article John. I totally agree. Dopey commentary on the part of Malone. A citation/link would have helped. T-X I only have a problem when it comes to games like Animal Crossing. Temporary skin tans are lazy, they could have at least let you unlock perma-skin-tan or some crap. flclfool Lol, where they just tattoo your whole body a tan color. Iflywright Can’t wait to read Paste Magazine’s next exclusive report on the LEGO games. Everyone is yellow in Undercover City–what’s up with that? flclfool Damn LEGO! Trying to stick it to the white man I see! Drowrin Not to mention all the characters are Italian. Jonathan Dogey Hahaha omg. Yeah, I agree. Blacks need to be represented better in a game where people are taking mushrooms. Jonathan Dogey This is what liberals are all about. Creating misery. Whether it’s called for or not, doesn’t matter. Liberalism thrives on anger, misery, unfairness, doom, gloom, tragedy. It has nothing to offer fiscally or economically so it needs misery. It needs us all to be pitted against each other. Thank God this article sets the record straight J_Joestar honestly, both sides kind of suck when they get to the more extreme ends. InterTreble This is the result of giving everybody the possibility of telling any kind of bullsh*t coming into ITS mind. The same apply here to the very limited and closed minded haters of this site, always aka idiots. Democracy is not always a good thing. Mario Fan Did you read the review at Paste? It’s extremely positive. He gives it an 8.8 out of 10 and says he needs this game in his life. So when you read a review do you always focus on the parts you disagree with and then rage about it on the internet? Drowrin Yes. Adam Howell Dare raise the issue of the lack of racial diversity in video games and some very sensitive people will cry that you’re an idiot and get in a right state. Arthur Jarret Mr. Malone and the Magical Clickbait Des This article is proof positive that they’ll let anyone write for this website. Wow, pretty sad. SethLaw lmao, Im still buying mario kart 8 regardless of having fellow black people like myself in the game. besides if they did have there would be to many hit and runs. lmao!! jk jk William Cole Like I said what do you want, a black Luigi with a fro? Nintendo’s characters turn out the way they turn out. I’d be reminded of that white supremacist of a shy guy but there really isn’t a fix for this at all. Guest To people who say Mario has no dark skinned characters: Justin Ordoñez Someone has an opinion that there needs to be greater racial diversity in Mario Kart and shared that opinion in a review that they wrote. It’s okay for someone to share their personal viewpoint on things. It doesn’t mean they’re forcing *you* to do or think anything, and it is certainly not “politically correct.” (Whatever that means). You’ve not been victimized by the reviewers opinion, so stop it. A person has an opinion and you disagree. It happens all the time. gamingpalooza well Nintendo is also being criticized for not having gay marriage in their games as well… which is totally gay. fer the worst article here. ignores the fact that racism and white supremacy is something that white people execute even without knowing. and guys, know it: it’s FUCKING important to have diversity, everywhere! read something about representation. and about the effects on the people that don’t have anyone like them represented in tv, games, movies etc. and i’m almost sure you guys would feel a different feeling if ~all~ characters were black. and that different feeling is: everybody is so used with the absolute presence of white skin charactes that becomes unable to see that that’s not something natural but a product of an implicit racism. Dean-Doniel Defense the thing is as a child i never really noticed how many white faces plagued the game because i was so into the game. but i am an adult now playing the game. i don’t think it will hurt Nintendo any to make new diverse characters. If Disney can do it with the Frog Princess. So can they.
