pokken

Nintendo has been branching out in their third-party relationships to create games that combine their popular properties with the mechanics of other games. Hyrule Warriors was the first cross-over we saw combining the characters and lore of The Legend of Zelda with Dynasty Warriors mechanics. Pokken Tournament is another cross-over that currently exists only in arcades in Japan.

The Pokemon and Tekken cross-over is a fighting game that pits Pokemon against each other using Tekken’s mechanics. The game debuted this summer in Japanese arcades, but Nintendo has just registered a trademark for the game in Europe. Arcade popularity throughout the rest of the world is no where near what it is in Japan, so it’s possible that Pokken Tournament could come to Wii U, or be a launch title for the NX.

The trademark itself is pretty standard, but at the end it does mention NFC devices. If Pokken Tournament does release on home consoles, it’s possible Nintendo will include amiibo support as they have in all other games. Here’s the relevant bit from the trademark application:

Near field communication (NFC) technology-enabled devices, namely, key chain tags, key chains, key fobs, key tags, key rings and key holders, and figurines, to facilitate the transmission and recording and exchange of video game content.

Remember that the Pokken Tournament developer said it is possible the game will be released in the United States, so keep your fingers crossed that we’ll eventually see this release in the West and that this is one of the first steps to that process.
