In its never-ending push for new games on the Wii U eShop, it looks like Nintendo has accepted another indie into its ranks. The indie developers behind the Ouya title Wrecking Balls Arena DX have officially been accepted as Wii U developers. In a recent post on r/WiiU, the team mentions how easy the process was, in spite of everything they had heard from other developers. Also, think about it… Nintendo just let an 18-year-old college freshman like me join their Developer Program (plus the other 2 members of Team Kakumei), and all I personally had was a few years of game making experience including some Flash MX, Unity, and Android (OUYA) development as well as being the main developer of the original Wrecking Balls Arena on OUYA. We didn’t have to have an office, any previous experience working at a “real” game company, etc. Say what you will about Nintendo’s “outdated/ignorant” practices and policies in some areas right now, but if what I just said isn’t an indication of just how open they’re becoming towards indie/garage developers, then I don’t know what is. Currently we haven’t purchased the necessary dev hardware (we can’t say much about all that; NDA), but we’re certainly getting a head-start by beginning work on the “Wii U enhanced” version of WBA: DX in Unity before then. It’s nice to see the team has such nice words for Nintendo and it’s true, the company seems to have reversed its policies on accepting people to become Wii U developers. Hopefully we’ll see more of this in the future. local_offer Nintendo team kakumei wii u stars Further Reading Why Nintendo discontinued the NES Classic Nintendo will not have an E3 press conference Nintendo profits are up 520% Breath of the Wild sells 3.8 million units Is Nintendo shafting Axiom Verge because of Dan Adelman? Nintendo doesn't need 3rd parties, says Stardock CEO starwars360 That is good. Nice to see more developers want to work with Nintendo and Nintendo doing very well and organize for downloadable games into Wii U’s eShop library. 🙂 The Clockwork Being Not related to this article! I predict the Nintendo Direct will happen the 24th or 25th. Last year’s Nitendo Direct happened the 23 and alot of people will expect it that day. I would also be a good time to make it now. Lil J Moore I hope so. Some Nintendo games news would be good right about now. Some more unannounced games for WiiU would also be nice. Mario Like the third unannounced Sonic game? Squid “the most important game ever is announced” RARE This game looks fun but very crude. Its understandable since its an indie game and a very small team which probably doesn’t include any real artists. But I wonder if Nintendo will do something similar to what Ubi did with Cloudberry. Magnus Eriksson Good to hear that they changed their policies on this area. In a way its great that Wii U lack third party support, because it opens up more important channels to indies. Hope that N. realizes the value of this, and help out as much they can. This could be very good. 🙂 JBeauregard its great in a way that theyre losing 3rd party support? lmao come on man, you cant be serious! Squid Is this an example when they said they wanted younger developers? GregoryTheRainMaker I look at it like this…this is all Iwata…he can make himself look like a joke…if he has to step down so be it. Let’s just watch this in it’s totality. Squid I don’t see the relevance in what you just said. GregoryTheRainMaker When you asked if this what they meant when said they wanted “younger” developers , and you look at who they picked up. It slightly underwhelms…I correlate this to Iwata…since he’s running Nintendo now. I say this because there is a spot light on Nintendo…especially Iwata, and what they do from this point onward will be closely observed and the effects it will have overall. That guy who hates Spike Iwata’s a great president. He gave Nintendo’s biggest generation of revenue ever. He recovered the 3DS with bold moves, ad alot of sacrifice. He understands games. He was a developer, unlike Fils Amie, who is ironically supposed to know marketing. GregoryTheRainMaker This seems mediocre and unimpressive…the game Wrecking Ball, but at least Nintendo is embracing indie developers. I like that. I hope Iwata brings in talented big developers and talented indie developers as well. Squid It doesn’t mean Nintendo’s going to give them important games 😛 GregoryTheRainMaker True but just the way I have observed Iwata and how he runs Nintendo over the years…he does bring in quality games, but he can underwhelm more times than impress. I’m not going to fully judge yet, because I’m looking to see what else he does. It’s just I don’t have confidence in him too much…he might bring some change, but I expect to be underwhelmed. He’s a double-edge sword…I need to seem more to really believe he is really deserves to lead Nintendo. Wildman Is Miley Cyrus in that video game “Wrecking Ball”? BIG Franky say thanks to Dan Adelman. JeanPaul So will they be like a second party team? or will they still just be making indie games? GuardiansFan anyone that can develop games in Html 5 can create games for the Wii U so it is pretty open. Their set of tools need work but they have gone a long way since their launch. The one tool I am hoping to see is something that can convert an android app to a wii u app. Since I can develop an android app I would be automatically interested in going the wii u route.
