Aug 25th, 2014

Last week was an eventful one for the Wii U, with Ubisoft finally confirming that Watch Dogs would be the last “mature” title produced for the Wii U, as the company’s previous financial reports showcased that Wii U owners just didn’t buy Assassin’s Creed games. This is something I predicted back in March, when reveals for two new Assassin’s Creed games were uncovered, but not a single sign pointed to either game getting released on Wii U.

This is where #OperationPlatinum comes in as a fan-based movement to see Bayonetta 2, a Nintendo-published mature title getting more than 1 million in sales during the holidays. Fans want to show that mature games have a home on the Wii U as long as they’re done properly. Bayonetta 2 is a game that would not exist without Nintendo funding Platinum Games and giving them the opportunity to create it and being nearly two years in the making, several fans are excited to play it.

Bayonetta 2 has been the source of some controversy when it comes to Nintendo, as many Xbox and PlayStation fanboys are upset that Bayonetta 2 is a Wii U exclusive game. Petitions to bring the game to all consoles have been made and to seemingly counter that, Nintendo announced at E3 this year that Bayonetta 2 would be releasing with Bayonetta 1 available as a free-addon, so fans who purchase the game will be getting two for one so they can play through the entire Bayonetta franchise.. on their Wii U.

Will you be supporting this movement by buying Bayonetta 2 when it releases in October?

  • Potemkin

I planned on buying it anyways and even more now that I know that Bayo 1 is bundled. 😀

  • Martijn Plasmans

Bad initiative. Games need to sell themselves. Because you want to play it. Game industry is not based on sympathy but on quality.

    • Gregg

Sadly this isn’t true, or Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, and other little nothings, wouldn’t crush the income of far greater efforts, great movies wouldn’t flop, and awesome games, wouldn’t flop… But they do, and, sadly, on Nintendo consoles lately, excellent “Mature” games, have failed for no other reason, than gamers ignoring the console. This is a great initiative, to raise awareness, of a title, that may otherwise go unnoticed, by a certain slice of the gaming market.

      • Shota

“This is a great initiative, to raise awareness, of a title, that may otherwise go unnoticed, by a certain slice of the gaming market” That’s nintendo job

        • Gregg

Nah, supporters of all things from music to sports, go out of their way to support what they love and and beleive in.

          • Shota

But dont say other people to love it or buy it.

          • Gregg

Love my IPAD, so much gaming, and so much other online gamers to game with. My IPAD & 3DS tag team everywhere I go.

    • Divaitiie!

True, If the game is good then day-one for me.
And this game is good enough …. so day-two for me XD.

    • 100% Agree.

  • Will.F. Martinez

I plan on getting it eitherway.

    • Rinslowe

      What does that actually mean?

      • Will.F. Martinez

        Was missing a word lol

  • Alvaro Espino

I’m buying two or three months later. I want to play it, but can only afford Smash bros for this year.

  • iamserious

    I’m sold!

  • Ducked

I won’t be buying Bayonetta 2. Not my style.

This whole pushing the games popularity because it’s mature rated seems dumb.

    • uPadWatcher

You’re missing out on EVERYTHING, Plucky Ducky.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

How is he missing out on everything over one game? Lol.

        • uPadWatcher

          Keep trolling, Gonzo.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

So by calling me a troll, means that you don’t have an actual answer to my question. Lol. Noted.

  • Rinslowe

Its an interesting movement, but in all honesty I would argue if it has the right focus? It certainly has a worthy goal, but that’s only because Bayonetta 2 is a Wii U exclusive worth investing in. Of course that all depends on personal preference. But generally speaking for the platform, genre, value and the exclusivity. Its not likely to get better than this one, until some unknown date in 2015. So if you’re in the market and you enjoy this type of game. *Would be silly not to support the title and Platinum with a purchase.

But as far as “Operation Platinum” goes, based on the movement’ creation by “youtuber” DrTre8, I’ll just say kindly – “get real man”. People shouldn’t buy a game just to prove something to third party companies that won’t give two hoots either way about Bayonetta 2 sales! I guarantee “it will not” put a dent in their resolve, even if the game sells 2 million copies. Definitely buy the game (an obvious one for the fans). But do so because you want to play this really interesting title…

    • D.M.T

I support this movement but also agree with everything you said

      • Rinslowe

I think I support the movement too by an alignment of similar interest – playing Bayonetta 2. But I’m sure that even Platinum’s creative team would prefer we buy the game because we want to. Not as a side effect of proving a point. Especially to those that aren’t listening anyway (Major Third Party Publishers). I mean, their titles (thirds) are predominantly multiplatform and their bean counters wouldn’t relate the information one to one like that in any case.

  • This game will sell pretty well regardless its better to buy watchdogs and prove ubi soft wrong altough I have already played it on PS4 if you really want more mature games Id won’t end at the point you buy a exclusive on the console you need to buy the third party games also and yes I know many of us did but sadly not enough

  • jhell

    Day one for me

  • uPadWatcher

I’m planning on pre-ordering Bayonetta 2 either next month or the first week of October. #OperationPlatinum!

  • DoctorWily

“several fans are excited to play it.”

This seems like a very underwhelming statement to me, not to mention a far cry from the million fans that this poster is urging to buy the game.

  • Divaitiie!

I’m gonna buy this game anyways, but I highly doubt it will reach 1 million, the first one released on Both PS3 and Xbox 360 with much much more larger install base compared to Wii U but yet it didn’t even sold more than 1 million … ( I think ).
    same goes to Hyrule Warriors.

  • Alexander Prado Aguilar

    First day buy for sure

  • dcj91x

Getting Bayonetta 2 anyways.. but yeah I see this guys urging (or reason for it) as pointless. Ubisoft has it wrong anyways. People didn’t buy AssCreed because they don’t want Mature games on the WiiU, they didn’t buy it because they were tired of false promises, lack of dlc other systems got, lack of quality, games delays and more. Games like Devils 3rd, Bayonetta 2, SMT x FE, many eshop titles and more are exspected to sell amazingly well because the quality is there and you can only get them on the WiiU not on any system on sold on any street corner.

    • I didn’t care about any of that. I didn’t buy ac4 on Wii u because AC3 was awful in so many ways

    • RandomGuy69

      Well Ac 3 had DLC

  • uPadWatcher
  • FilipiCn

    Download First day

  • Rich Garriques

i plan on buying it day 1 so that’s not a thought anymore.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t believe it’s going to make the game sell 1 million regardless(opinion there). I do commend them for going the extra mile, but it isn’t necessary. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. It’s up to Nintendo to do whatever it takes to get the word out there, and hope for the best.

    • uPadWatcher

      In denial much, Gonzo?

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        What denial would that be?

        • uPadWatcher

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I know what you’re implying, but makes little sense considering it’s my opinion, which doesn’t support your point. Helps to read things clearly. Seems like you’re the only one in denial my friend. Unless you found denial elsewhere, then please explain. Btw, nice editing retraction. 😛

    • Fred

I don’t believe this will help it hit 1 million for a different reason. This game is similar to Wonderful 101, and it’s made by the same company as Wonderful 101.

Wonderful 101 is a top notch very fun game I know, I own it. However it sold abysmally! Yes Bayonetta already has a fan base, but it’s a similar game on a system where most owners don’t buy this type of game. Unless you guys can talk the Bayonetta fans to buy a Wii U then this doesn’t stand a chance.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I believe firmly that it will be shy of the one million mark. If it does hit it, then I’d be happy for Platinum and Nintendo for a job well done. If it doesn’t, then I don’t see it being a big deal either way, as I’m sure Platinum’s expectations aren’t over that mark. I would go as far to say that 500k would still be plenty profitable. All that should matter, is that they delivered a quality experience.

      • soy

we are talking them fans right now. both wii u owners and bayonetta fans to get the game.

i also doubt that she would reach one million, but at least we’re doing something. better than nothing, i guess…

  • Landonus

“several fans are excited to play it.”

    determiner & pronoun

more than two but not many.

    “the author of several books”

    synonyms:some, a number of, a few; More

  • Jeremy Baker

I will be getting it day one

  • Mr Ninty

*gets beer* opens window* and listens to the sweet cries of xbox/ps fans*

  • gerb1977

Not sure if I will buy it or not. Looks like a great game but isn’t one i can play in front of the children. Maybe I will add it to the library of games I own that I hope to play someday

  • Superxtreme

I seriously doubt that Bayonetta 2 is going to sell over a million copies.
I know I’m getting the game though.

    • steveb944

      Party pooper.

      • Superxtreme

I hate to be that guy 🙁 but I wish I’m wrong.

  • Ony

Not my style of game but I’ve already planned to buy it for Wii U support purposes.

    • Des

Same here. Plus it’s two games in one. That’s a bargain.

      • BarbieOnWeed

Don´t know how it is for rest of the world, but here in Sweden it will cost extra for both version. Like 20 dollars 🙁

        • Afo

          true ;( 100 kr mer

  • darkcreap

I will get it later. I am travelling to a region where my European WiiU will not be able to pkay retail discs. I don’t want to go digital with most games.

  • That’s what I’m talking about! #operationplatinum #mybodyisplatinum

  • RyuNoHadouken

I knew i was purchasing day one upon initial announcement

  • Coffee

Where do I sign something? Do I sign something?

    • Daniel Gonzalez

You don’t have arms. How are you typing?

      • Rinslowe

The same way as Stephen Hawking obviously. Sentient Coffee. No wonder A.I always kills us in the movies. I’d be pretty upset about being a self aware cup of coffee too…

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Hmmm….self aware coffee. I’d be careful with that latte. It may do things you never thought were remotely possible. >_>

          • Rinslowe

Not a good look. Just as well I have a room and an en-suite connected to my office. My own crash pad during the week days, lol.
That means I can weather the effects of a “sentient” coffee in complete privacy…

  • nigeriangamer

Good games sells on nintendo system, be it matured or not…if its has that nintendo seal of quality then its gonna sell case inpoint bayonetta will sell

  • One word: Yes.

In fact have it preordered allready for 2 months now waiting for it’s release.

  • Alex Welch

I got snap, Pinterest, google+ and twitter. And FB of course.. But I’ve been at this bring for a while already. Let’s make this happen guys. I won’t be sharing this video tho because I’m not convinced it will help. #projectplatinum

  • Petri

I don’t need operation to buy this game.
I’ve been set to buy 2 copies of this game since E3 2013.

    • RandomGuy69

      y 2

      • Petri

I want digital to have quick access to the game.
Physical to have it in my shelf collection.

  • anthony optimo

I’ll buy it but not open it, not a fan of the stylized hack n slash.

  • Helbert Pina

Bundling 1 was the perfect incentive to make me want to get it on launch day. I just hope the port is at least 720p60! Sweet!

  • Dreamcasting

I already have it pre-ordered & it’s a nice gesture but even many of Nintendo’s own first party titles have yet to crack a million in sales on Wii U much less alone an “M” rated title. They’ve got their work cut out for them on this one.

  • MujuraNoKamen

I totally support the cause, I’ll be picking this up and I hope it does pass the 1M mark.
But when we have to start a fan movement persuading people to buy a game to prove a point about Wii U & Mature games. Well we aren’t proving anything. Every other game has sold/will sell like shit so we’re just reinforcing the idea that Wii U games wont sell (unless a big campaign gets underway)

    • Dreamcasting

Yeah, I love my Wii U but I’m not deluding myself into thinking that there is ever gonna be huge 3rd party support for it. It’s 2 years on the market almost & 3rd party games are on life support, there’s not much of a chance of it coming back & by the time the install base gets big enough to make it a consideration for 3rd parties, Nintendo’s next console will be looming. I give it four years market time before Nintendo reveals it’s next home console.

  • Viktor Araujo

If they want to help with the marketing and the mouth to mouth, i see no harm.

It was Day one for me already, so who knows.

  • I have been hyped since the announcement. I played the first and loved it, and hope this does well. I pre-ordered last month. I do feel that people should buy games over the game, not sympathy, but eh.

  • C.S. Bailey

I used to keep going back to the 360 version since I hadn’t finished it. Haven’t touched it again since the reveal that it would be included with the second game.

  • steveb944

Who the hell is this guy, just a fan?

Either way I’ll be buying the game regardless because it looks good. Even if 2 doesn’t come out too well I’ll know that 1 will get me through. It’s 2 games in 1 people! Why wouldn’t you buy?!

I won’t be buying it day 1 as there’s no preorder incentive. So I’ll get to it once we have an official release date and I can plan my future purchase. Can’t wait to play it.

  • Jay Jay

If i dont but this game i should hang myself. This game is awesome since i knew this game was coming my wallet was preparing.

  • the_battery

Somebody get this man a cookie! GIVE HIM ALL THE COOKIES!!!

  • nin-10-doughfan

Yes!!!! I’m not a fan of the franchise (yet) but two games for the price of one! No brainer!

  • Vorpal Blade

  • Gabriel Fiala

I am definitely buying this game!

  • Fboogey

    Day one purchase.

  • Epicstuf
  • GregoryTheRainMaker

I am ok with this. I plan to buy Bayonetta 2 along side everyone…this is exciting!

  • Strange Kaiju

    Day 1

  • ShadowLotus

Yes! Especially if you’re buying it already, suggest it to your friends as well. It’s the least we can do.

  • Dylan Groot

Ok kiddies, listen up. Ubisoft (for example) releases their games on all platforms. many gamers have both an XBone/PS4 AND a Wii U. For which platform do they buy the new assasins creed? Of course for Xbone/PS4, cause its way prettier and runs better. Let me tell you, Nintendo is NEVER going to get 3rd party multi platform devs back, because their machine is underpowered. Its that simple. They blew it with the Wii U because they are not in touch with whats going on in the gamers world anymore. I still love Nintendo, but yeah they blew it.

    • Epicstuf

Wrong page to talk about this. Plus, Xbox 360 and PS3 is underpowered so your logic is flawed. Ubisoft still makes games for Xbox 360 and PS3.

      • Dylan Groot

Yeah because there are dozens of millions of 360’s and PS3’s out there.

        • Epicstuf

There is. Were you putting sarcasm in that sentence?

        • Joseph Oliveira

And I highly doubt your last name is, Groot.

          • Dylan Groot

Actually it is. Very common Dutch name.

      • Dylan Groot

How old are you people anyway? I always feel like I’m talking to 16 year olds here.

        • Epicstuf

  • brian

I’ll be buying Bayonetta 2, just not when it comes out. I just got a PS4 and I kind of just spent $600

    • Joseph Oliveira

      I bought a PS4 too… and it’s currently collecting dust.

  • Sean Miller

    Damn right

  • Phillip Wright

Bayonetta 2 is the very reason why I’ll be buying a Wii U.

  • Bobby P.

Im buying even though I know very little other than people are crying about it being a Wii U exclusive. Their loss, my gain 🙂

  • pbd2

Might buy it preowned when its cheap. The first was just allright and with no achievment system I see no point paying full price.

  • Joseph Oliveira

I think they already hit the 1 million mark along time ago when they announced that the first Bayonetta will be released with it.

  • 60hz

AC has always been overrated – great graphics, probably a decent story (i guess – i care not about story) and that’s about it… to expect wii players, bred on solid gameplay to fall for the marketing ploy that is AC is to not understand the nintendo base… I would be a bit more upset about wonderful 101 sales, but that also lends itself to nintendo’s base only purchasing 1st party character games – if 101 featured nin’s characters the sales would have been through the roof… thus zelda outfits in bayo… my 2 cents! There’s no question i’m getting bayo2 (and i don’t even have a wii/u! – but i want one!)
