Unlike Media Create’s weekly release of numbers for the Japanese market, NPD Group only release their top ten list once a month and then it doesn’t share exact numbers for software sold with anyone. That being said, their top ten list still gives us a look at how well certain games are performing in the market.

This chart is dominated by The Last of Us for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, as the remastered version was released in July. Following that is the console version of Minecraft, FIFA 14, and then Watch Dogs, clocking in at number four. Mario Kart 8 has managed to hang on in the top ten at number five, while the rest of the top of the charts is filled with games that were mostly released last year.

It’s great to see Nintendo maintain a top spot with Mario Kart 8 and NPD Group confirmed that Wii U sales have been up compared to the same period last year.

Nintendo confirmed that Wii U sales are up 60 percent through the first seven months of 2014 compared to the same period last year. That’s largely due to the popularity of Mario Kart 8.

1. The Last of Us (PS4, PS3)
2. Minecraft (360, PS3)
3. FIFA 14 (360,PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Vita)
4. Watch Dogs (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
5. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
6. Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox One, 360, PS4, PS3, Wii U, PC)
7. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
8. Sniper Elite III (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
9. NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
10. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (360, PS3, 3DS, DS, PS4, Wii U, Xbox One, Vita, PC)

If Nintendo can keep this pace, they’ll have a top ten game in the NPD Group report all the way through the holiday season, which will mean a much better performance for the Wii U than we’ve seen in the past.

  • 5th place is pretty good, especially considering all the other games are multiplatform. I bet we’ll get an even better result with the release of Hyrule Warriors and Smash Bros soon.

    • Fred

I don’t know if we’ll get it with HW, but you know Smash will be on there. (I hope I’m wrong about HW I know I want it)

      • crocodileman94

HW will do good in Japan, no doubt. The western market on the other hand…

  • I know this is Wii U daily but screw it im a gamer and I need to say that the #1 spot is completely deserved for the best movie I ever played, sutch a great game.

Mario Kart still looking good also I cant wait for the holliday season the Wii U will be the best place to sit and play with some friends, mario kart and smash bro’s gonna be a great end year. keep buying that stuff people!

    • I enjoyed The Last of Us as well when I played it last year. People get upset when games get “remastered” and re-released, but if any game deserved it on PS4, The Last of Us was it. It came out at the tail-end of the PS3 lifetime, so many Xbox 360 owners never got a chance to play it. Those who upgraded to the PS4 now can. 🙂

      • matthew garcia

I agree completely. I think Nintendo should remaster Zelda skyward sword for the same reason. It released during Wii’s decline and was kinda outdated in 480p for the year 2011

        • Christian Schoff

I disagree on the grounds of how many copies were sold and that I really don’t want any more Fi.

          • matthew garcia

I thought it was a good game. Maybe not as cool as the others but I mean I’m sure it wouldn’t take to much of Nintendo’s resources to do it anyway.

          • Fred

It wouldn’t have to take any of their resources. I want the game, but I want them to pay an outside dev to do it. Just like I’d love to see them do a bunch of HD gamecube/wii games, but I want outside devs doing them. I’d love to see an HD Xenoblade come out before Xenoblade X, but only if it doesn’t use the incredibly valuable resources at Monolith Soft if not I’d rather they just do another print run. I have some many friends that still need to play that game, but they aren’t willing to pay $80 for it.

          • matthew garcia

I feel screwed. I paid 120.00 dollars for xenoblade chronicles at game stop and I checked to see there trade in value was for the game and it was 15 dollars. Those s.o.b’s lol, I guess that was more of my fault then anything for going to game stop but the game was hard to find and I wanted to play it so bad

          • GameChanger

I was so close to paying 90 dollars for it at Gamestop but I held off. Good thing I did because during the holidays last year their website had Xenoblade and Metroid Prime Trilogy for 40 dollars each.

          • steveb944

Stop trading in your games at a loss. Sell them on Amazon and

You can EASILY get back $60+

          • Fred

talking about how many copies were sold, reading your post made me want to see the numbers and I found this interesting article

        • Fred

That would be awesome. That game looked awful, in fact Skyward Sword was the game that after years of owning a Wii finally drove me to buy component cables. I’d love to give my Wii copy to my parents and buy an HD copy on 1 condition. I don’t want it to waste valuable Nintendo resources. I want Nintendo to pay some outside dev to do it for them. As long as they do that I’m game.

          • matthew garcia

Oh man I know exactly what you mean. Skyward sword forced me to buy component cables as well. It looked horrible on my hd widescreen tv. I didn’t have a old tube television anymore to make it look decent

        • D.M.T

They should remaster Twilight Princess instead. But that’s just my opinion.

          • matthew garcia

I can agree with that also

          • Rinslowe

They should just do a remastered collection – OoT, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. As impossible as that might be… I’d buy it.

          • Guest

I think a Wii Zelda Remastered Collection is in order. Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Then include OoT and MM as DLC. My money would be running to the store on its own if that happened.

        • Kyle

I think Skyward Sword was one of the best Zelda games and Id love to play it in HD.

          • Rinslowe

Me too, come to think of it…

    • FutureFox

“best movie I ever played, sutch[sic] a great game.” Don’t you mean great movie? : )

  • Googs

How is Minecraft still so popular?

    • One reason is the PS3 version just got released not too long ago. And it’s coming to Vita soon, so it’ll stay on the charts.

    • D.M.T

And why isn’t there a Wii U version of Minecraft? Wii U is perfect for this game. I guess the reason why they won’t bring this game to Wii U is because it makes too much sense lol.

      • Rinslowe

Lol. Always an odd mix for Nintendo. Action and sense, Sense and action…
If the minecraft guy’s to be taken seriously then he doesn’t think too highly of the platform right now. That or just having some fun…

You would think, “just having some fun” as he obviously bought into the Wii U at some point to own one, lol.
Even more of a wtf moment then, why isn’t it on the platform already, tut tut…
(Although not sure if he’s still involved in it or not…)

        • D.M.T

He thinks he’s funny but he’s not. It was a bad joke.

  • Sdudyoy

It surprises me that MK8 sold better than GTAV.

    • Fred

It shouldn’t GTAV has been out a lot longer and has already sold to a decent percentage of people. Plus there are a lot of families where parent’s aren’t going to allow their kids to play GTAV, but those parents are more than happy to let their kids play MK8

      • matthew garcia

Last I saw gta 5 sold over 35 million copies across all platforms already. I know that’s multiplat but damn those are crazy sales

        • oontz

Even crazier considering it was just 2 platforms.

        • iago parrot

    • oontz

Not that surprising, gtav has been on the market for almost a year. Anyone who has wanted to play it likely has already.

      • Sdudyoy

Ahh, For some weird reason I was thinking it just came out, weird.

        • oontz

          Came out 9/17/2013.

          • Sdudyoy

Yeah, I don’t know why I thought it came out in June of this year, I’m not interested in the game, so I really don’t know much about it other than lots of people bought it.

  • Fred

Man, there aren’t many exclusive games anymore are there. only 1 game on the list is exclusive to just 1 platform.

    • D.M.T

Games are too expensive now to be exclusive to 1 platform. Nintendo games are the exception. Nintendo doesn’t spend ridiculous amount of money to make 1 game.

  • Korv13

As long as Mario Kart 8 holds steady in the top 10, the Wii U will perform.

Hold on Mario Kart 8, back-up is coming!

  • Rinslowe

Not surprised about The Last of Us. Definitely one of those games…
Great to see Mario Kart 8 is still on the charts. Heard it just topped a million copies sold in North America. Nicely done, especially considering it did so in only 2.5 months.

  • Ducked

Do they show system sales, or only software?

    • matthew garcia

No numbers they just say ps4 led u.s. in sales again. Between Wii u and Xbox one I’m not sure

      • Ducked

I thought they released it at the same time. We might get a word out soon. Hopefully…

        • matthew garcia

Yeah man they have released numbers before. Not sure what the deal is

  • Scott Duperree

I wonder how close in sales Mario Kart was to Watch Dogs which is on 5 systems and was released about the same time. The importance of Mario Kart 8 is that is probably drives up console sales more than the other games on the list do, since none of the rest are exclusive to a system, let alone a system with such a small user base.

  • Scott Duperree

You know, if the Wii U has a successful Holiday Season, there is the possibility that Mario Kart 8 actually gets back up higher than 5 in slower months next year.

  • Milky Bacons

no matter how many persuasive arguments I make,
no matter how many discussions I try,
and no matter how many things I do,
the majority of people I know still don’t like Minecraft; even though it’s in the number 2 spot.
And people still hate and make fun of Nintendo; and they have held to the top ten list for months now!
Those two games are there for a reason: THEY’RE GOOD! Great in fact! Numbers don’t lie!

    • Guest

But the console version of Minecraft is crap.

      • Milky Bacons

Idk why people buy the console version… the PC version is best.

  • J_Joestar

wonder how it would look if everything was also sorted by system it sold for?

  • Rabbi Bongstien

Anyone know when Watch Dogs is coming out on Wii U? Or is that not happening anymore?

  • The NPD Group is so damn inconsistent with the info they release. Sometimes they give us exact hardware sales numbers, and sometimes they keep it secret. Honestly that frustrates the crap out of me.

So, i guess i just have to assume that hardware sales are probably hovering around 80k or so?

  • Chase U

now that I’ve read some of these comments, WOW Mario Kart 8 sales are VERY impressive! Mario Kart 8 is the ONLY exclusive game on this list… and it’s exclusive to the freakin’ WII U! That’s a HUGE step for Nintendo… very exciting…

  • PlayStation4Life12345

the PC gaming sell are always terrible …. If people could stop piracy, I’m sure the PC games sales will easily be on top … but sadly, that will never happened, since we all like free stuffs XD.
    sad but true :P.

    • SkullScience

I have to agree, the booming PC market is a myth. Most sales figures include Steam Flash sales (and those from other vendors) and the games can cost as little as £2. This is incomparable on any other platform, otherwise torrent sites are booming. The PC market is struggling very badly, at least here in Europe. Desktops are going (belatedly) but laptops have not really caught up (especially price-wise). I often feel that the piracy aspect has held back PC gaming significantly. I am a PC gamer first and foremost but have not had a game in years that made me say “wow, a console could not even attempt this”. If devs (large devs) developed solely for PC then that may be different, but the loss they make due to rampant piracy prevents this.

  • Sean Miller

    PC used to be god
