Dec 12th, 2013

Over the past few months, YouTube has been pretty aggressive about cracking down on YouTube channels that upload any sort of video game content. It recently came to light that a series of changes to how YouTube performs these “content ID matches” would come about in January, resulting in hundreds of thousands of videos being flagged due to them containing “unauthorized” content. Many indie developers have been speaking out against this crusade on game videos since people playing their games and making videos of it has lead to many success stories.

In fact, some large publishers like Paradox Interactive and Capcom have taken to Twitter to let users know it’s okay to use footage from their games in videos. While the issue rages on, Nintendo has been guilty of using the content ID match system built into YouTube to stifle channel owners who show Nintendo games in the past.

It looks like Nintendo may be working with some channels in the future in order to get them whitelisted, however. According to this post on Google+, a Nintendo representative named Dan (not Dan Adelman) got back with a channel owner on his inquiries into his content ID matched videos. The results were kind of surprising:

The same Dan responded to that email today, he acted rather shocked on how lucrative YouTube actually is.
Because of that, he asked us how he could help us.

The only thing we asked was to put our channel (guess its name…) on their whitelist, and resolve all the claims that were already made against us.
After that, he sent us another email asking how to whitelist a YouTube channel.
We called up BroadbandTV, which is our network, they confirmed us the users of YouTube’s CMS system can whitelist channels from claims.
When we asked how to do that, they told us to email TGN support, and we are awaiting response as we speak.

It’s nice to see that Nintendo is keen to work with its fans in order to help avoid these content ID matches that are currently nuking video game content all around the site. When Nintendo first started claiming videos for ad revenue we thought they would be at the forefront of this new system YouTube is putting in place, but it seems that may not be the case.

If you have a YouTube channel with Nintendo videos–or videos from any other publisher–it might be worth your time to contact them via Twitter, forums, or email to see if they’ll grant you the specific permission that is needed to help avoid these content ID matches on your content.

Andre also made a video saying how his words were twisted into saying Nintendo was behind this, when they are NOT

    • Jack5221

Im so done with IGN. They’re the ones blaming Nintendo. Don’t people understand that Nintendo is not the only one doing this… Youtube is flagging/striking videos of all games. But of course people like to jump to conclusion. Just like the video says, IGN took his words / tweet and twisted it up into a lie. Pathetic…

EDIT: Oh, and to prove IGN is full of shit, claiming that Nintendo is the only one taking down gameplay videos on YouTube and shutting down YouTube channels because of copyright. Go to the IGN’s YouTube page and you’ll see RECENTLY uploaded videos of Super Mario 3D World gameplay…

      • jay

That entire site is BS. I haven’t trusted that source since 1999.
        Glad people are waking up.

      • Wayne Beck

Just for the Record. WiiU daily is the only site that did not update their Original Accusation against Nintendo to refer to the Youtube policy change. IGN did. They still suck, but they did.

        • crocodileman94

But now they have changed it back again.

          • Wayne Beck

            That’s because they suck. lol

          • NintenScience

            Oh no…

          • crocodileman94

And right now it appears that they have changed the “original” story to make it sound like IGN never screwed up to begin with.

        • Jack5221

I know. Unlike that crap website IGN, Wii U Daily actually gives the truth. Rather than disgraceful tabloid style “journalism” Shame on IGN.

      • GaryCXJk

Eh, IGN didn’t even accuse Nintendo, IGN was just talking about it as a whole, and used it as an example. It’s at the 5:12 mark of Andre’s vid. It’s the rest of the Internet that blew this up.

        • jsty3105

          IGN’s original title was:
Is Nintendo Claiming Copyright on YouTube Videos Again?

And that was enough for anti-Nintendo people to start commenting without reading the rest of the article.

So, yes, they did accuse Nintendo. Not directly. But they did. It’s all evident in the choice of words used and the location of the info which says Nintendo may have had nothing to do with this. It’s quite tabloid-style journalism really.

          • Rinslowe

True but IGN still covers some good topics for Wii U/ 3DS etc…
I don’t get all the hate. If it looks like shyte I’ll just pass up on reading further. But it’s not all bad news, tabloids and slandering.
Jose Otero – Peer and I think Keza McDonald represent quite well IMO. Most times…
Certainly nowhere near as obviously biased as say; Eurogamer for eg..
It’s the IGN comment section which should be avoided at all costs. Trolls have overrun the Kingdom, I dare say.

      • LyonKS555

It’s stuff like that that made me stop visiting IGN

        • fireheartis1

It’s stuff like that, that made me unsubscribe to their YouTube channel as well.

      • Cyberus

So, if I kill someone, it’s okay only if someone else did it

        • Jack5221

No. But read the tweet that he sent out. NEVER does he mention Nintendo, yet everyone over at IGN is accusing only Nintendo of doing this.

          • Rinslowe

I think IGN are pretty good for the most part… you know toward Nintendo.
But damn those comment sections… what a cluster fck.

          • crocodileman94

You think those are bad? Go check the comment sections at Gamespot.

          • Rinslowe

You have a point… Eurogamer has gone that way lately too…

          • NintenScience

          • Andrew W Garttmeyer

Ever since the revamp on Gamespot I have not been able to log on, no way to complain to them because that is on the fritz as well, haven’t gone there in 2 months and I do not miss it. What are some other sites I can go to that ARE decent for video game news besides here?

          • crocodileman94

Playeressence is an option, but they can become too pro-Nintendo at times.

    • Dáibhí wotshissurname

I do love André, but I can’t help but sense a pang of bias in his words, even if they’re true, due to how big on Nintendo he is.

  • Guest

Don’t people understand that this is not only a Nintendo thing. Youtube is flagging/striking videos of all games. Starting 2014 there might not be any LP allowed on youtube. But of course people like to jump to conclusion.

    • NintenScience

      Does Youtube love censorship!? O_o

    • Mario

Really. Youtube is behind this? Not Nintendo?

      • Andreas Sunde

Yup. They made a system that’s fucking broken. Check out the latest vids by TotalBiscuit, Address The Sess, and Boogie2988 for more details.

        • Mario

          Thatnks for telling me.

        • Mithiragi

AlphaOmegaSin has a good video on this subject too.

          • Shota

            love that guy! and farfromsubtle!

        • NintenScience

          a system that’s fucking broken

          • Andreas Sunde

            Ok, two systems.

    • Mithiragi

lol I just posted a gameplay vid this week too.

  • Wren Justin Umlauf

So since Nintendo is cracking down on this youtube stuff, I’m a little more annoyed that Smash Bros wont be having the cut scenes and other story bits…

Edit: So since YOUTUBE is cracking down on this stuff, I’m a little more annoyed…

  • NintenScience

  • Super Buu

Wait wait wait. Can someone help me here? So Nintendo is trying to help people as opposed to what the liars at IGN saying that they’re not?

  • The Clockwork Being

People really? IS anyone actually surprised that IGN is blaming Nintendo for this. The misleading titles bring in the clicks whcih brings the $$$. Plus Nintendo did some stuff before so its easy to get the general number of gamers to go against them for this when IGN just claims false info. Nintendo is helping people not claiming.

Edit: I also find it funny how they are making a big fuss about Nintendo only and not how it is a great number of other parties having these problems.

  • Lusunup

Yes! Ashley made a Post! 🙂 Im still not use to the new editors I end up not believing what they say…:/

  • crocodileman94

Those in favor of giving Google the ‘Worst Company in America’ award, say “aye”.

    • Lord Carlisle

No, let’s give that to EA for the third year in a row.

      • Tecpedz94

After the third to EA we will give it to Google and then go back to EA. We need to share that award and be generous….

      • Andreas Sunde

Nah, Google deserve it more this time.

        … I never thought I’d say that.

    • Wren Justin Umlauf

Besides merging Google+ with Youtube and this glith in their system, what have they done?

      • JB

I’m not sure what the big deal is about this whole G+/YouTube integration. Create a dummy account. Problem solved.

  • Lord Carlisle

I just loathe how eager the gaming community can be to jump on the Nintendo hate bandwagon.

  • harelsen

this would not have happened if google did not buy up youtube!!! i like google, but i think their way of forcing google+ down your throat is rather annoying. i can’t post youtube comments anymore, unless i get a google account…

google is basically like jehovah witness, forcing its bloody beliefs on you :L

    • ItzameyaToad

To be honest without Google I don’t think Youtube would really be what it is today or not nearly as big.

  • Jose

If it means to get Whitelisted, I’ll do it.

  • ItzameyaToad

Google really needs to fix there BS and this video tells why.

    • fireheartis1

This dude is completely correct. YouTube has no right to let these idiots take people like Angry Joe’s money.

  • hahahero

Classic Game Room is Leaving YouTube because of this. Furthermore, Rich at ReviewTechUSA hears its only going to get worse in 2014.

    • ItzameyaToad

Wow that sucks. Good to know though that they will still be making videos on there website just not on Youtube anymore.

      • Jose

There’s always DailyMotion. CGR’s content is found there.

        • ItzameyaToad

True I forgot about that site. Well good to know there content is on available now in two places other than Youtube.

          • Jose

I’m going to be uploading there at DailyMotion as well. I really hope others do the same.

      • hahahero

Yeah, I was happy to hear that. But Rich brings up a good point that is
whether these great youtube channels will be sustainable (financially)
on their own outside of youtube.

    • Simon Stevens

I love Classic Game Room :`( his videos let me reflect on my nostalgic games, I like RTU a lot better face to face, but still, he moans all the time, and is a real bummer >.> he puts nothing but negativity on to youtube, but every now and then he can be alright, but still, my face when he said Iwata should go in one of his videos agreeing with Adam Sessler

  • LevenThumps

Wait a minute. You mean to tell me that Nintendo wasn’t behind this?

Next you’ll be telling me that the WiiU has good games.

  • Simon Stevens

Am I the only one laughing at the dickhead youtubers this affects? LOL review tech usa’s vids are riddled with unauthorized content, it’s hilarious, shame for the good ones though (gamexplain) fyi IGN can well and truly EFF off ^_^ absolutely awful company

    • Mithiragi

      I feel bad for avgn.

      • NintenScience

    • TheGameTagerZ

      “unauthorized content”

      • Simon Stevens

Like all the videos (99% of videos) of him playing video games without permission from the big bad publishers, he really paints a picture, “I love Nintendo (plays nothing but first person shooters on his videos)”

        • TheGameTagerZ

          You sound really butthurt.

When you’re partnered you have permission to upload gameplay because the gaming partnerships buy the licenses for games like call of duty, street fighter etc. Unlike adsense which doesn’t and provides you zero protection and you would HAVE TO ask permission to monetize then because adsense wont provide the license.

Coming from a youtube partner who’s been doing this for 2 years.

“I love Nintendo (plays nothing but first person shooters on his videos)”

^This has nothing to do with anything. Just your personal butthurt. So if I wanna talk about Call of Duty I can’t play Halo? If I want to talk about Microsoft I can’t be playing Legend of Zelda?

          • NintenScience

          • Simon Stevens

So the other guys getting flagged haven’t got partnerships?, it’s not quite black and white as all that in regards to the new system in place, and what exactly would I have to be butt hurt about?, I dislike him, I have my reasons, simple as that, it takes a special kind of idiot to be told your so stupid by the man in charge at Sony, that’s just my opinion, you have your opinions, I have mine, I don’t know you personally and you don’t know me personally, so don’t put words in my mouth and twist them as that wasn’t what I meant at all.

          • TheGameTagerZ

Oh its the Sony thing he said that you’re butthurt about.

Who cares about companies? People (should) just want great products. I don’t care about Reggie, the Sony CEO, his brother, Yuji Naka, none of them. I’m not controlled by a piece of plastic like the other fanboys out there are.

            Flagged /=/ Content ID

Youtube’s new system has affected a alot of partners but that’s a youtube problem. The publishers are all going out now to fix the issue. Namco Bandai, Blizzard, Ubisoft, Nintendo and more are already aware of the issue.

What was the point you were trying to make again? That one persons video/opinion got you all rustled?

You wouldn’t know what half of these people are going through since you’re most likely not even a partner. I guess my point initially (besides the silly ReviewTech personal issue you have) was that at least know what you’re talking about before you say things like

“LOL review tech usa’s vids are riddled with unauthorized content, it’s hilarious”

Because it makes you sound ignorant and butthurt.

          • Simon Stevens

At what point did I state that I didn’t know the state of affairs?, I don’t need you to lecture me on something I’m already aware of, either way, it could still affect him.

It’s not about being tied down to a piece of plastic, it’s about his so called “sources”, sources I fully believe never existed, he was just causing shit and getting enjoyment out of it, it’s about his overall depressing and negative attitude towards gaming, give me Classic Game Room any day, at least the systems and games are appreciated there and spoken of in a professional manor, regardless of the name on the box.

You seem to have a pretty high stand point on being a “partner”, I don’t need to be a “partner” to understand the shit people are dealing with, I see no contribution what so ever in any positive light from RTU, so I could care less about him, people like Gamexpain though, people who actually do have positive input (not bitching and having a whinge), I do feel for those guys, again, just my opinion.

I don’t care what you or anybody else thinks of me on a forum,I don’t know you personally and you don’t know me, only when you know me can you attack me on a personal level, I haven’t disrespected you one bit, but you’ve disrespected me, ignorant and butthurt?, look in the mirror mate.

          • TheGameTagerZ

            Jesus Christ you’re hurt.

“It’s not about being tied down to a piece of plastic, it’s about his so called “sources”, sources I fully believe never existed, he was just causing shit and getting enjoyment out of it”

            ^This is your problem.

IGN has sources, Angry Joe has sources, Total Biscuit has sources. Just because he didn’t put his source out on blast doesn’t mean he’s lying.

            You’re very narrow minded honestly.

Just say you hate him for your loose and borderline illogical reasoning’s and call it a day. Because this is all I’m getting from you.

          • Simon Stevens

RTU – reading google articles and overreacting to them, it’s just an opinion, it’s not a problem, just an opinion.

I’m not going to go into why I feel he was blowing smoke up everybodys ass, I tried to avoid that because I didn’t want an argument, his reasoning was far fetched, not logical and clearly made up, just MY opinion though.

Like I said, you shouldn’t judge me when you don’t know me personally as I’m not judging you because I’m not judging you, but don’t try to come off like your highly superior because just like me, you ain’t shit.

          • TheGameTagerZ

Not going to stick around to go back and forth with you.

All I’m going to say is that one source he had was clearly wrong but at the same time the source has nothing to do with RTU other than the fact he repeated what the source claimed.

He makes the same amount of views whether he “blows steam” or not. So I don’t see why he would talk out of his ass.

You need to realize in the end of the day we’re not him or have any credible sources to prove that RTU was blowing smoke the whole time.

His sources can’t “clearly” be made up if you don’t have any facts to back this up besides that “you just don’t like him”.

          • Simon Stevens

As a person, he is probably a nice man, I don’t know, I used to like him but extorting his fans for that camera made me eary of him, but I don’t know him so on a personal level so I have nothing against him, as a youtube personality representing gamers, I really just don’t like him as he goes back and forth on what he says and I really don’t know wether to take him as genuine or as an act, maybe you misunderstood my comment?, I just don’t want those kind of negative channels in the gaming community, I’m seeing far too many pop up, *blackbond* being another personalitythat I hate, not because he hates the Wii U, that’s fine, but because he goes out of his way to make videos about it and influence people in the wrong way almost every other day, games are amazing, I just want the light shed on that, not the system it’s on or the genre it is, what really rustled my jimmies about Rich was his attitude on the video he did about Sony and drm, he seemed excited about it, his tone wasn’t that of somebody genuinely concerned, I don’t believe he had sources personally, regardless, his reaction was appauling like he enjoyed it, that’s why I don’t like him, I have no beef with you by the way, I just don’t appreciate being made out to be an idiot.

dont youtube understand that lets plays and walkthrough-ists such as myself like this article states actually increases popularity in games ? one game i know of increased in popularity dramatically because of youtube users is Okami

I believe that youtube had to initiate this bullshit idea was because of networks and companies like nintendo pressuring youtube to eventually come up with a better copyright system. And as usual youtube does a shit job in introducing something new. I’m very disappointed in youtube to have the incompetency of not thinking outside of the box and what will happen to mostly the gaming channels. It’s not just youtube’s fault as I would put some blame on the companies such as nintendo, I’ve always been a pretty strong supporter for nintendo but their announcement of their new copyright policy really pissed me off, honestly I think it may be jealousy with their competition but that’s just my opinion.

  • NukemDukem

nintendo still hasn’t released my claim nor given me a contact information on it
