The original Wii is about to become an offline brick, as Nintendo have announced that it will be shuttering Nintendo WiFi Connection for both the Wii and the Nintendo DS as part of the move into the future to focus on the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. Several outstanding games with online components are being affected by the shut down, though online services like Hulu and YouTube will remain accessible from the console. Nintendo maintains that in order to move forward with delivering new services, WiFi connection has to die. In a statement to Polygon about the shutdown, Nintendo said the shutdown will be global. This is a global termination which will take place on 20th May 2014 Worldwide. As for the list of games that are affected, some are high profile and likely still have many people playing them. Here’s the full list of the affected games: Wii Animal Crossing: City Folk Battalion Wars 2 Boom Street Endless Ocean Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep Mario Kart Wii Mario Sports Mix Mario Strikers Charged Football Pokémon Battle Revolution Samurai Warriors 3 Super Smash Bros. Zorpix I WASNT DONE PLAYING METROID PRIME HUNTERS Ducked Stay tuned for Metroid Hunters 3D Zorpix I want Metroid Hunters U Ducked I want the Metroid game on the Wii U to be called Metroid Prime Hunters U 64 Zorpix The movie the game SmashFinale MY MARIO STRIKERS CHARGED! NOOOOO!!!!! That actually has an active community ;( Zorpix does it really? Dang… Wren Justin Umlauf Could you imagine a multiplayer only Metroid game that let you play as different hunters or create your own hunter, or even create a GF trooper to play as? That could be such an amazing game and would really give Nintendo some credit in the online multiplayer world. I want a full Metroid game as well, but I’d love to have a mutiplayer game to tide me over until that happens. When they announced DS games coming to Wii U I was really hoping Hunters would be released with the online multiplayer, but sadly that appears it wont be happening. Unless they made some changes for the game. Zorpix Hopefully it does at some point :/ Schultz38 They’re shutting the Pokémon servers down?! The heck! I can live with most everything else, but POKEMON?! Also, this list is a great reminder of how amazing the Wii/DS generation was. Simply superb. Christian Schoff You don’t have X or Y yet? Akatosh Older pokémon games have their own very unique metagames. Ending them forces competitive players like myself to resort to nonofficial battle simulators to expierience things like… non-ending weather inducing abilities, or… life without garchomp. greengecko007 And some of us don’t want to play in a metagame centered around Gale Wings Brave Bird Talonflame and Adaptability Close Combat Mega Lucario. I loved playing through Y version, and have done it several times, but Game Freak flat out lied when they said they wanted to make the game more balanced for competition. Mario Are you sure they lied? And isn’t it possible to fix that with a patch? greengecko007 Game Freak’s justification for introducing the new fairy type so late in the series, lowering the strength of commonly used moves like Ice Beam, Surf, Fireblast, etc. and increasing the defensive stats of several Pokemon was to balance the game for competitive purposes. However, these balancing tweaks are easily negated by the invention of Mega evolutions, in which Pokemon gain absurdly high stats that make legendary Pokemon quake in fear, and overpowered abilities given to only 1 or two Pokemon like the aforementioned Gale Wings and Adaptability. The result is actually the opposite of a more balanced metagame, and now, there are even more Pokemon that are completely unviable in standard competitive play, with good teams consisting of the same handful of overpowered Pokemon. Mario Then why haven’t they been trying to fix this? Surely, after hearing all of these complains, they would have done something by now. greengecko007 Because most Pokemon fans, including competitive players, don’t care. Competitive battling websites like Smogon even set up tiers for Pokemon under the guise of making certain Pokemon viable, but in reality they’re just grouping together their favorite overpowered Pokemon together and dumping the rest wherever based on usage. Captinn2 WHY POKEMON?! ashiquz probably to stop ppl from using pokegen and actually breed em Gudleifson this sucks :L will i still be able to download my purchased games of the store? 😮 NintendoFan the Wii store thing isn’t shutting down right now, just online games. Byrong1 Didn’t they just release a Wii with Mario Kart for the holidays? That would be pretty insulting to customers that just bought that package. Ashley King They released a Wii Mini with Mario Kart Wii, but the Wii Mini doesn’t have any online connectivity to start with. Nintendo is essentially turning all current Wii models into Wii Minis with this. Gentle Robot That’s not true. Online connectivity will still function, just not online multiplayer games. You can’t run Netflix or buy WiiWare with a Wii Mini. Volshebink Does anybody else find it interesting that they’re shutting down those servers and implementing a new online service just 10 days before Mario Kart 8 is released? I think Nintendo might be up to something with the online play for that game… SolarGalaxa Custom Courses LBP style? That would be the only expiation as Nintendo right now can use the same servers for Wii U online multiplayer. However, if a service like LBP is implemented, then a more powerful infrastructure is required and thus brings the question “do we keep the old infrastructure?” sillybajillies As much as I’d love that, that’s a giant stretch-especially to say it’s the “only explanation.” Daniel Gonzalez They’re hoping that by shutting down the service, Mario Kart Wii and Brawl gamers who still play online will panic and buy a Wii U just for MK8 and SSB4. This move may or may not work, but we’ll see May 30th. jjbredesen They proberly need the exstra servers, because they are kind of struggeling with the server capicity. Tecpedz94 Exactly they are shutting it down so more people buy their current products. I do find this a but sad for those who do play online on those systems. I doesn’t affect me at all but still. Yoshi Could be a clue to the release of Smash… *wink, wink* ETeach We can only hope. Jon This isn’t any different than what is happening with the PS3 now. Online servers are already starting to be removed for it. Daniel Gonzalez PS3 will be supported for several more years before they even discontinue servers. Unless you’re talking about select games. GABRIEL GARCIA Wow really ? Ps3 ? I didn’t know I thought Sony keep their online network. Very interesting. Well I’m happy I sold mine already 😉 matthew garcia Lol why would u sell the console that has the widest variety of games on it. Wooopigsooie While this sucks for those who consistently still play these games, I would prefer having some stellar online play for MK8 and Smash Bros. 4 than more mediocre (to say the least) Brawl online. matthew garcia It sucks cuz the competition will still enjoy online for a while Avionics Hoping that MK8 is not easily hack-able. Nothing was less enjoying than getting spammed with blue shells at the start of a race and having a hacker auto finish first every time. That was a huge problem with MK wii. Ducked Exactly, wii games were very easy to hack. I stopped 2 years ago because of it. eli (off topic) yeeeeeeeeeah! TFK! Wooopigsooie WHOOOO!!!! Fist bump to you my brother! Also off-topic but I’m seeing them live tomorrow at WINTERJAM!!! I am STOKED! #letthesparksfly Wren Justin Umlauf LUCKY! Wooopigsooie Don’t mean to brag or anything, but the concert was EPIC and afterwards I got my picture taken w/ Trevor, Joel, and Steve from Thousand Foot Krutch and I even got the to SIGN MY SHOE!!!!! Wren Justin Umlauf Awesome!! I got to see P.O.D. my favorite band, and got my picture taken and autographs on a vinyl record of theirs. That was my most exciting band moment Wooopigsooie Very cool! Vinyl records are so classy… lol. eli yeaaaaah! Mario Bye, bye Wi-fi connection. McBlink Nintendo needs to come up with other creative ideas getting Wii owners to move to the WiiU other than shutting down servers. I expect this from EA and Microsoft. Will.F. Martinez they should atleast move all the vc game over to the eshop, i’m still waiting for that to happen and also let us play wii games on the U online. it would make sense idk if i’m asking for to much Archiq09 Its want says after 20 may I can’t play Conduit 2? SP-937-215 Dammit. I can’t fall asleep watching SSBB spectator mode anymore 🙁 cthreep Ha ha, I couldn’t even find spectator matches with Brawl. Looking forward to some highly functioning SSB online play with the upcoming Wii U version. SP-937-215 Me too. But, I can see voice chat making me want to throw my controller at the TV. I’ll probably keep it muted most of the time. sdmac200600 Nooooooo project m ;_______; SolarGalaxa Not unless they do what CTPG is trying to research: Their own server 🙂 Wooopigsooie I have an idea! This disrespectful stunt by Nintendo will be excused IF for every Wii game that loses online, a Wii U game (Nintendoland, Pikmin 3, SM3DW) gets it! Gentle Robot I would really appreciate that. Wooopigsooie Yeah, if they’re going to release VC titles at this pace, might as well beef ’em up a bit by adding online features. This may not be for all games, but playing some of the classics online w/ friends would be a blast! Also makes me think of DK 64 which I used to play multiplayer on my friend’s 64. I’ve always wanted to play it once more via Wii/eshop, but the rights frickin’ belong to Rare! Christian Schoff Who are you to make demands? xD Wooopigsooie Don’t look at it as “making demands,” more like making Nintendo $$$! daeglyth Sorry, I don’t think I ever used it. What is Wi-Fi play anyways? Joey LOL 🙂 google is your friend mikeybruises Oh well. I guess I will get Mario Kart Wii and Goldeneye Wii play time in for old time sake. Dark-Link73 Wow!!! What a terrible, TERRIBLE, move! This is an awful move because most of those games either do not have a sequel in their respective console yet or they are such great games that many people still enjoy their online gameplay. My kids are going to be so sad they won’t be able to play their games with their friends anymore. NOT EVERY WII OWNER HAS A WII U NINTENDO!!! GregoryTheRainMaker Then you would buy a Wii U which is affordable? Dark-Link73 I already have a Wii U. I bought mine on day one. I gage around 26 retail games plus a number of eShop titles. But I also a Wii and 70+ games my kids and I still use. However, non of my kids’ friends have a Wii U. They still use their Wii quite a bit as we do. Unfortunately, a lot of their friends are thinking of getting an XBOX One or a PS4 but they’re just waiting for more games to come out. Well this move by Nintendo is surely to make their decision easier and get a rival console faster than if Nintendo were to leave the NWFC running another year. cthreep I hear you, but this is a very smart move. It’s about bloomin’ time they focus on the Wii U. The Wii has had its day. matthew garcia Not much to bloom with 1 game out every 3 months IAMTHEL33KER True cthreep Touché. But maybe they’ve been slow releasing games because they’ve been working on two systems…I bet more will start happening for the Wii U once they’re done with the Wii. 8ruc3 On the contrary. It’s not a bad move. It’s a good sign for the Wii U and Wii U owners. It means they will finally put all their energy on the Wii U. The next step should be to stop selling the Wii or support it completely. It’s time for the Wii U to shine. Dark-Link73 While i do agree that is time to change manufacturing resources from Wii to Wii U, and also also agree that Nintendo needs to increase their attention to Wii U; I don’t believe it should be done at the expense of 100 million current users. This move will cause Wii owners to shelf their systems and move on, HOWEVER, since awareness and knowledge of the benefits of the Wii U over the Wii are still rather slim for being out for over a year, most people will end up buying a PS4 or X One because that’s what we’re being bombarded through TV and at GameStop. If Nintendo wants to move resources it should be to their advertisement department. The Wii U’s advertisement campaign is pathetic. They need to stop using little children and families only and use also adolescents and young adults too as they did with the Wii. Show on advertisements whatever third party games they have, and most importantly, they need to hurry up with games. Where is Zelda, Metroid, single player Mario, Starfox, F-Zero, etc. If anything, this move by Nintendo is not to focuse on Wii U’s online infrastructure, but to cut on the cost of having two different online infrastructures due to the losses suffered in this fiscal year. 8ruc3 Yes you’re right. Good points. But I don’t think there was many people playing online on the Wii even with the 100 millions install base. Otherwise they would have wait a little longer before shutting down the Wi-Fi. But that’s just my opinion. TaintedXGamer They can still keep the games, it just means there’s 2 libraries the wii u has access to. 8ruc3 The Wii U has already 2 game libraries because of the backward compatibility with the Wii. Shutting down the Wi-Fi for the Wii games doesn’t mean you will not be able to play your Wii games again. It doesn’t affect the backward compatibility at all. Scott Duperree Can we still purchase games of the Wii Shop Channel on the Wii U in Wii Mode? Gentle Robot The Wii Shop Channel is staying up. Richard Branches Yes, you still can. cthreep Hmm…just in time for Mario kart 8. I have the feeling we won’t be disappointed with the new online awesomeness that awaits! PaulRuddsHair Was anyone else confused at first by the title of this article? I thought, until I read the subtitle, that Nintendo was no longer supporting WiFi technology (ie. no more online play on my WiiU without an Ethernet cable)… I guess, at this point, nothing they do seems impossible to believe… GregoryTheRainMaker It was poorly written, but I suppose either Ashley didn’t realize it or she did it because it would garner more attention so that more people would come to the article since it comes off negative..and people gravitate to anything negative faster. Roadkill409 The title might seem confusing, but the blame is with Nintendo not Ashley. The “Nintendo WiFi Connection” is what Nintendo called their online product for the Wii. PaulRuddsHair Good point. Joey seems you cannot read it properly it is not confusing… Javy G This is tragic. Didn’t they just package Mario Kart in a red and black Wii bundle THIS Christmas?! GregoryTheRainMaker I think that was for the Wii Mini. 8ruc3 The Wii Mini can’t go online anyway. Javy G Ok didn’t know much about it. Just looked it up and it is lacking too much. No SD No GameCube No online. But I am ready for Wii U with MK and SSB. The Competions will be on fire! rp17 All good things must come to an end. I guess sooner is better than later, as Nintendo needs the servers for the Wii U. Ducked Pizza has never came to an end Josie the Sketcher Grrrr! Why, Nintendo, Why? Mario Ahh! Let it go man! It had to happen someday! I’m not gonna miss the Wii’s Wi fi connection much, since I’m already using Nintendo network on 3DS and WiiU. kevin nun—- Nintendo you are killing yourself. The majority of people that even buy a Wii this generation is because of games that have online. No wifi makes buying a Wii worthlessbpretty much. In that case, then why in the world did you put backwards compatability for the WiiU if you arent going to keep wifi connections? To make it appeling? You should have scrapped that off and used the left space and money to make the Wii U better and more appealing or at least take away wifi when the ps3 or xbox360 stop with their online connections. I just bought smash bros brawl this year, I was going to buy Mariokart for the first time just for the online so I dont play it alone on my WiiU, but I guess I’ll forget about that now. Gabe Hoffman Unlike XBL which was generally the same between 360 and the original Xbox, Nintendo Wi Fi and Nintendo Network are not really compatible with each other and the former is extremely outdated and much of Wii’s online was a clusterf***k to begin with so it sort of makes sense to give it the axe. You also realize that MK8 will likely have online which will be vastly improved from Mario Kart Wii which basically turned into an overblown whackiest Roman They don’t want people to buy wiis, they want them to buy Wii Us. I would say although you may not get online features with older games, that doesn’t make backwards compatibility worthless (I bought twilight princess for the first time for my Wii U). The Brawl online thing was awful, so laggy it is unplayable (you won’t be missing much). As for Mario Kart, if you lay down 30 more bucks you can get the new one (8) for the Wii U; I’m sure it would’ve better to buy the new even if the old still did retain online play. matthew garcia Why make people buy wii u when wii has the bigger better library of games. I understand wii u is struggling but keep goin what worked for u 8ruc3 Are you serious??? What do you want? The Wii for 15 more years? Why make people buy the PS4 when PS3 has a bigger and better library of games? Because at some point, it’s time to evolve my friend. I understand your frustration, but life goes on and it’s like that in everything in life… matthew garcia Lol dude wii u evolving. They have problems showin it. Wii u has nothin that offers the evolving future. They barely hit the hd market 8ruc3 Haha yeah you’re funny. Keep telling you that. 😉 matthew garcia Lol well thats why I like this site. Everyone seems to respect each other on the comments. There are a few people who get butthurt on things but overall I like the people on this site Daniel Gonzalez Keep telling him what? ;P 8ruc3 Hmm maybe I didn’t write my sentence correctly.. 😉 TaintedXGamer Wii u is backward compatible…….I sometimes do brawl online on it. Though I not missing much. I still playing and hunting down wii gems for cheap. ;p wii you had a good life but your successor the wii u, will carry ur extensive library and the Nintendo torch. Fair well wii. matthew garcia I think that torch is burning out Mario Stop living in the past man. Keep gaming in the future. abe Nintendo doesnt even make Wii’s anymore and most stores dont have stock there is no market there now. moving on is the best choice Donaald You’re stupid if you think online was the focus of most Wii games, the only people that will be affected the most are MK7 and SSBB gamers. Michael Ocampo MK7→3DS URFTBOUND4LIFE . Majority of those games listed don’t require online anyway. Hate to burst your bubble, but NOBODY buys Nintendo games for their online. You can still play those games without the servers so they are not worthless Smash Bros. and Mario Kart are best played locally anyway. That’s the problem with gamers today. Become so spoiled with Blue-ray and online and social media as if its required to have fun with your games. I bought Brawl at launch and didn’t even have internet access till’ 2010. Did it stop me from playing? No. Clocked in over 200hrs on that game just from single player and local multi-player. You had plenty of time to buy the Wii and it’s games.Do you really expect them to keep the Wii going when they have a whole new console to sell? It’s not Nintendo’s fault you came to the party too late. Jon I hope Mario kart will still work on Wii mode on the Wii U On a side note, The PS4 sold less than the Wii U did on it’s release week in Japan. Weren’t people saying the PS4 was going to sell a hell of a lot more on it’s release week than the Wii U did in Japan? Gabe Hoffman I think it actually sold more than Wii U but not by much. It only beat Wii U by like 14,000 which is a very slim margin Jon where are you getting your numbers? I got the Wii U for it’s first week in Japan at 372,851 while the PS4 is 319,689 in Japan on it’s first week. Joey You can still play Mario Kart in Wii mode just that you cannot play multiplayer online but you can play with friends in split screens. Daniel Gonzalez Hasn’t been a full week. Lol. Wouldn’t say I was one of them, but I wouldn’t call PS4 sales bad at all. They didn’t sell like PS2 did way back, but still respectable numbers. In either case, first week sales mean nothing to lifetime sales. So I don’t worry over a launch, neither should anyone else for that matter. ;P Jon it’s always like that, it was the same with the Wii U too where the numbers didn’t show a full week because a full week didn’t go. Richard Branches Oh no! and me that I wanted to buy some wiiware games with online multiplayer! 🙁 there are more games than on that list though… I won’t be able to play online with tv show king 2, bomberman blast, excitebike world rally, moto heroz, tetris party and water warfare, it’s sad… Gabe Hoffman While I understand that it would stink for those that sill enjoy online in those games I am honestly not surprised. DS hardware is ancient now and Nintendo Wi Fi is ridiculously archaic by modern standards. They have Nintendo Network now which is vastly better than Nintendo Wi Fi connection in every way. It would make sense in order to focus on Nintendo Network now since the number of people who still play online with Wii probably doesn’t make the cost of running and maintaining the servers worth it. I would rather have them retool those servers for Mario Kart 8 and the new Smash Bros anyway. I can tell you that Brawls online will certainly not be missed cthreep Brawl could have been so awesome if the online function worked. Even if it worked as well as Mario Kart Wii it would have been okay. But instead it was a lag-fest. Gabe Hoffman Mario Kart Wii was better although I had issues with getting booted from the game and then there is the fact that the online mode devolved into an insane hack fest gone horribly wrong. Seriously look up some videos and you’ll see what I mean cthreep Yeah, I did get kicked from games every now and then. And hackers were EVERYWHERE. Still a better online experience than Brawl. Capt. Smoker That’s a shame, I was the boss on Mario strikers online, I’m gonna miss playing that game online Jon did people actually play that game online? Capt. Smoker Yeah, though it takes a few tries to get anybody on there lol SmashFinale You play it?! I’m gonna have to dominate online on that again. I took a break from it but time to bust out the team! LJay Good bout time everyone made the upgrade to Wiiu n 3ds,now Nintendo need to start getting all the vc games over-pronto! with a 1080p,60fps Super Mario Kart with online racing n leaderboards…. ….one can but dream. steveb944 MARIOKART?! But all my race info is on my Wii! Last Story has online? I better buy that game soon then in order to enjoy all aspects. I think it’s too soon to be shutting down Wii, the DS is understandable as it’s old and its WiFi system is ancient. I guess this is their method of forcing people to buy new systems. Carlos Coronado Is this going to affect Netflix and the E-shop? SolarGalaxa MARIO KART? Why such a popular game? The others I can (kinda) understand. But MARIO KART? A game that sold 35 MILLION? I would have expected this from Microcrap, EA, or some other party, but Nintendo? Carlos Coronado Maybe beause they want all that people to play the New Mario Kart Daniel Gonzalez It’s basically a way for Nintendo to push those Mario Kart Wii owners to buy MK8. It’s cheap, but that’s business. Joey I used to have Mario Kart, but i now have Mario Kart 7 for my 3DS it’s an awesome game better then the DS one. SmashFinale i have to disagree for the fact that Mario Kart DS had more single player options. Sdudyoy NOT POKEMON! Scott Duperree I am playing Dragon Quest IX right now, too bad. C4 Shutting Advance Wars is stupid because there’s no new game (yet) . What’s the online feature in The Last Story? Donaald That akward moment when the DS had more online gameplay than the Wii Kyle Zawacki Will you guys stop being Nintendo fanboys now? Kyle MK Wii’s online was was what made that game. It’s alright though, understandable. Ducked Don’t really care, since the only game I really played online was Mario kart. Which I haven’t touched in 2 years since every server was hacked. And I only play Smash Bros locally MetroidZero So, May 20th means no more online Brawl matches. And when does SSB4 come out? Fall or Winter? A drought for online Super Smash players. ETeach Wii was never really an online system for me anyway. I have Mario Kart on the 3ds and soon the WiiU, and Brawl’s internet was always a little laggy. The only thing I’ll really miss is playing COD with my old college friend, but maybe now she can finally get a 3ds and we can play those games together instead. IAMTHEL33KER Fuck Nintendo. Josh Warren I dont like this at all!!! BIG let down Nintendo!!!!!! Old School Great marketing idea lol Mario Kart Wii was one of Nintendo’s best games, just because you pull the plug on wifi doesn’t mean everyone’s going to run out and buy a Wii U for MK8. Make more amazing games like MK8 and Smash and then you’ll sell some serious consoles Kevin Sepulveda It has to happen some day and it wont personally affect me so. SHUT IT DOWN NINTENDO! Make everyone move on and let the past go! XD readypembroke At least it is only first party servers so you can play CODs on Wii still. C-Doug Full list of discontinued support, from Nintendo themselves: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/gameslist/games-wifi.jsp C-Doug This is NOT the complete list. The complete list can be found here on the official Nintendo website: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/gameslist/games-wifi.jsp Dazed Does it affect Call of Duty Wii games as well? Stephen Davis If we play WII games that have online capabilities in our WIIU, can we still play online for example Medal of Honor Heroes or 007 James Bond? Or all the servers being shut down so no online for those games? hk yeah yugioh games are safe if not why are they not on the list? Potemkin Not that it was a good service anyways…. Hezkore What a shame… 8 years of up time though, same as the original Xbox Live service. ETeach I’m wondering if this will improve the laggy Wii Tennis online or overall performance at all? I know nothing about this stuff, so tell me if i’m totally off the mark on this one. Jacob Shut down on servers. That means home brew teams and hackers are taking over the online. There’er are ready looking into test for the hacked servers. Hope they can get them back up, or least for people with HBC.
