Wii U closeupNintendo just released some financial results with a tweaked forecast on sales and profits. The company slashed profit forecasts by 70% due to slow sales of the 3DS in North America, and gave an estimate on how many Wii U console they expect to sell.

Nintendo revealed that the company expects Wii U sales to hit 5.5 million by March 2013, when the current fiscal year runs out. Back in July, Nintendo said they expect to sell 8 million consoles by March 2013, which include both Wii and Wii U units.

At the same time, some analysts estimated that the company would only sell about 4 million Wii U consoles during that time frame. Nintendo has now gone on the record and set a target number: 5.5 million.

This number is actually pretty close to the original Wii, which sold 5.8 million units during the same period in 2007. Wii sales are now at 97 million, and will likely pass 100 million by March 2013.

Thats a good number. I hope they reach it or do better.

    • Just nin10do

        • just nin10do

sorry i cant speak english well
im sure sell 10 million Wii U by March 2013

    • BLACK OPS 2?

they will get 6.3 by march oh yeah it’s to good!:D

      • Smurfman256

The reason why they lowered their expected numbers is becasue one of the Foxconn facilities that was makeing the Wii u caught fire and destroyed alot of components. Expect shortages.

        • AKA-Link77

Nin actually realized that and said that the fire wont impact their manufacturing…

    • PACMAN

The 3ds was first a big dissapointment but it recovered. Nintendo will not make the same mistakes as they did.

      • mikey

But that’s what’s good about nintendo, they’re not afraid of trying new ideas all the time. Unlike play station and xbox who just copy their ideas and make a few changes.

    • cornmuffin

I just played it at my local gamestop and to me it was amazing but you have to see for yourself even though i only got to play the new rayman wich i have never herd of before and it was pretty lite for a controller so big the screen is way bigger in person then in the pictures but overall the graphics are good wich is important to gamers these days the controller fit just right in your hands the buttons dont stick i think nintendo made there best choice in years with this consle and will reach their goal and propbally even higher

      • cornmuffin

        What will (u) play next

  • Trev

I think 5.5 is reasonable If they can make enough wiius to meet demand this holiday season!

    • JumpMan

if they, say, make some COMMERCIALS?! puh-leez! for NA, and make ’em good! like the Wii Commercials!

      • Nintendo is da best

Wii would like U to play! (See what i did there?)

        • JumpMan

@Nintendo is da best, i like it!
@Derp, brilliant! add what Nintendo is da best said and we have the best commercial EVAR!

      • Derp

Commercial: Show a 10 second clip of zombies having their brains blown out with an assault rifle in ZombiU, then afterwards show mario running around in Super Mario Brothers U. Next show violent scenes from Assassins Creed III, then switch to gameplay of Nintendo Land (Which minigame doesn’t matter).

After all of that, show the console and say the slogan “What will U play next?” That will be a good commercial. Agree?

        • metroidfusion2

Perfect commercial and also add that the wii u is a brand new console

  • Rami

If you don’t aim high, you can never achieve high. Good luck to them.

  • DeoxKato

this is possible who does’nt want this sexy looking console

    • Nintedward .

mmmm , all the ps and xb fanboys ??? just saying…. that still won’t stop sales from being really high though!!!

      • Nintedward .

Yeh , there is tons of people who PREFER the playstation or Xbox who will still buy a wiiu they’re the ”none asshole” fanboy.

I’m talking about the trolls who HATE Nintendo with every ounce of their existence , they aint gunna buy a wiiu …. lol. everyone else should though!!!

        • Monster

who cares about the nintendo haters/trolls…. I wouldnt even call them actual gamers to begin with.

ps: this is coming from somebody who has the wii/xbox/ps3 and is getting the wii u ofcourse

          • Nintedward .

I have all 3 aswell ! Nobody cares about 1 dimensional gaming trolls , I was just answering the guys question

”who does’nt want this sexy looking console” answer – all those horrible ass Xbots and Sony drones . Any real Gamer will buy the wiiu!!!

  • yorgen

“Wii sales are now at 97 million, and will likely pass 100 million by March 2012.”

    i’m sure you meant march 2013 ?

    • yorgen

still, nice submission. i appreciate it.

    • Madmagican

  • Armani

I hope they do make it! 😀 wonder how many pre orders they’ve made already? And also… Dont they mean March 2013 at the end?

  • Tobbe

Need more tv adds, commersial and so on. Here in Sweden nothing is showing the upcomming Wii U. None of my friends have heard of Wii U. Only a new “tablet” will come. Put a few million on commersial and Nintendo will sell more. Game Stop in my town have only 70 preeorders. (pop 100.000)

    • Wii U next gen

Wow i had the same deal alot people never heard of the wii u it’s weird

      • Benjah

Its weird cause those are the people that don’t give a Shit-hole about anything about the big n or the next gen.

      • Cugno the Swiss

Same here. Well, I’m not from a very big place, as you may understand reading my nickname… But still.

        • Tobbe

Nintendo haven really failed on there consoles anyway. Word spreads about a new console. Mouth to mouth is free commersial, Meening free commersial, slow sales at the start. Still they will sell 100 mill in 5-6 y 🙂

          • Tobbe

Nintendo HAVENT really failed… It should be a T behind haven

          • Derp

Word will spread quickly through media commentaries, Youtube “Lets Plays”, and simply seeing the console at the electronic/game store from November 18 onwards.

Big fanbase, plus Respected from general public, plus something unique (tablet), plus Statements made above… I doubt it will be unnoticed for long (if unnoticed at all).

          • Tobbe

guess i explained myself wrong. due to thumbs down. i ment that nintendo never fail, and the word will spread anyway and will sell in millions and millions

      • DG

When Wii was about to launch most people I knew didn’t understand what it was, and when I explained the notion of motion controls to them they thought it sounded stupid.
As soon as the system came out it and people played it, word spread like wildfire and everyone wanted one.

    • prettypinkpanacea

Yeah, a few of my friends have heard of it but only because I have told them. I hope the APAC marketing kicks in soon. I thought Nintendo would have pushed the marketing in this region in mid to late october onwards, considering the build up to christmas. Perhaps they’re doing a small pre-build up prior to release and a massive push around December.

  • NintendoMan :D

To me, this seems a little low, especially with the holidays. Then again, I don’t know a lot of people who know about the Wii U, so we’ll just have to see.

    • Benjah

Hey man who cares about that. It is the next gen.

  • nintendoododo

    • yorgen

      hmm… indubitably.

    • Master Awesomeness

      What the hell?
      English translation please…

    • THAT GUY

SPEAK ENGLISH and shut up about PStupid 2.
This is a damn nintendo website

    • Lazara the Last

      English, please?

      • Roedburn

Just ignore the dick. I’d rather not know what he’s saying.

      • Madmagican

      • 16der

Hmm maybe wii ps2 could skip that step: it. Ps2 or just because yet in stores, because Sony wants it to remain best-selling console and does not want the nintendo ds ignore it. But the good news to the extent that I believe that the Wii U’s to sell 10 million this year. I guarantee it for real! (I used google translator so the translation may be accurate or not.)

      • wiiuland

“maybe wii could overtake that ps2. Ps2 is at stores only because Sony wants it to stay as a best selling console and doesn’t want that nintendo ds overtake it. But about the news a little, I believe that wii u will sell 10 million this year. I guarantee it really!”

Something like that. (didn’t use translator)

      • nintendoododo

        Translation(for americans):
Hmm maybe wii could pass that ps2. By the way ps2 is still at the store just because sony wants it to stay as a best selling system and don’t want, that nintendo ds pass it. But about the news, I believe that Wii U will sell 10 million this year. I guarantee it seriously!

        • BloopbopBeepbop

          Oh alright, thank you.

    • Benjah

      Do you a speaka english?????

    • Nintenlord

I dont know what you said but i will cover my self by saying “you are”

    • zonda777

Literate translation: Hmm… maybe the Wii could override that simply because the PS2 is still in the stores, Sony wants it to remain standing, and the Nintendo DS console and doesn’t want to skip it. But the news to the extent that I believe Wii U will sell 10 million this year. I guarantee it, really!

I still don’t understand exactly what he was trying to say though..

    • MyBodyIsReady

TRANSLATION!! ^_^ (got it out of google translate so sorry if it doesnt make much sence)

    • BloopbopBeepbop

      Okay, Ps2…Sony…Wii U…10.
      I can figure this out.

      • LyingTuna

Yep. That’s how I read it.

  • xamy

i just wish nintendo good luck ond more power to them! go nintendo!!!

  • Jesus

I would Have bought a 3DS if I had enoug Money, but instead I will buy a Wii U AND a 3DS XL Only for nintendo

  • Master Awesomeness

So Wii will sell almost as many consoles as Wii U might…?

    (Wii:3 million- Wii U: 5.5 million)

    This is wrong, so wrong…

  • yorgen

36 days and 1 hour until the release 😀

    • yorgen

and 24 days 1 hour 27 min for you Americas 😛

      • NoPUNintendo

And negative 1 or 2 years for Reggie…

  • Johny

it can happen EASILY… but ONLY if the REALLY do some proper advertisement….. the wii U might (actually is) be confusing to ALOT of people because of its name being too similar to wii and not obviosuly saying its a new console… so NINTENDO put some decent ads showing and REALLY explain what the wii u IS and what it is NOT. and it’ll be a huge success =)

    • NintendoMan :D

But look at how close the PS3 name is to the PS2 and look how many people bought that.

      • JumpMan

yes, but this is different. it’s not Wii 2, it’s Wii U. people might think it’s an add-on like Motion+ or the Balance Board, something to enhance gameplay, but isn’t required. Nintendo put it upon themselves when they released 3+ enhancement thingies for Wii (Motion+, Balance Board, Classic Controller, etc.) but if they do really well with the commercials, they. will. WIN! and when i say win, i mean win control over the world. i’d be ok with that.

  • Ben

see how the wii and the u are really good friends. now that great and awsome to hear.

  • Benjah

relax everyone the u will pass all expections.

  • youtube/KrayAmbition

    A W E S O M E

    • zonda777

      I N D E E D

  • Benjah

We shell all wait and see on nov.18 and beyond….

  • TheDavyStar

I feel sorry for the sad souls who don’t know about the Wii U.

  • podge79

Not one to jump on the bandwagon but most people i know only know about wiiu because i told them. But Im confident that its popularity will sky rocket when the advertising gathers pace.

  • Wii U wake me up Nov. 30

They need to hurry up and give us more info.

I was very happy with their September presentation but I thought we’d have more actual game information to digest by now.

I actually re-watched the EU presentation today and learnt more by seeing that stuff again than I have in the last 5 weeks of internet lies.

  • Madmagican

I think hitting 5.5 mil is a very realistic goal… provided Nintendo can create quality commercials and gain the interest of the general public relatively quickly. We’ve got twenty-three days left people!!

    • Madmagican

      …until launch

  • 3dsguy

Go wii u hit that target

  • RoboticLink

I honestly think they were right at 8 000 000 consoles. 5 million is a little low.
By the time the next Nintendo console comes out they will probably be at 80 million or higher.

  • james braselton

i there the internet says 8.5 million wii u units thats 8,500,000 wii u preorders

  • Kahhhhyle

Nintendo also said that they will have to sell each wii u at a loss according to IGN…

  • Smitty

Several articles on the web saying that the WiiU will be sold AT A LOSS!? Not sure if it just means in the states or in general but im pretty shocked they are doing this and have a little more understanding of why they chose to omit ethernet and dolby digital so they didnt have to pay a licence fee per console :-/.

    • NoPUNintendo

Wii U will sell at a lost. Only for a little bit of time. Nintendo will start profiting off the system, given a year or two. Come on people, let’s be realistic here.
      History repeats it self.

      • D2K

If the Wii U is going to sell at a loss then this system must cost a lot more than $180 dollars to manufacture.

At that manufacture cost the Wii U would have a $170 dollar profit on the 32GB model and a $120 profit on the 8GB model.

So for it to sell at a loss that means the Wii U costs at LEAST $300 per console to make. I’m not sure what to make of that. If the Wii U costs $299 and $349 respectively and is going to sell at a loss, that could mean curtains for Sony and Microsoft.

In order to make a system more powerful than the Wii U they would have to take a HUGE loss on the 720 and PS4. This is an interesting turn of events. I can see why Nintendo hopes to sell 8 million units between now and the end of the fiscal year. It’s not a disaster but just something Nintendo hasn’t done for awhile. This just seems really odd. Really, really odd.

        • Iken

I think there selling at a loss because of the strong yen and the exchange loss that comes with having a strong yen to the euro and the dollar. Also, the tablet is very expensive and difficult to make. Also, add that apparently one of the manufacturing plants for Nintendo components has seen controversy with underage workers.

          • D2K

If they have pulled their production from the Foxconn plants that would explain why all of a sudden after spending the entire year touting that the Wii U would sell at a profit (even with the currency issues) that it will now sell at a loss.

The controller cost about $50 to manufacture. Even if you tacked that on extra to the $180 for the system, that still would leave the Wii U with a $70 profit. However what I’ve heard is that the price of manufacturing the controller was totaled into that $180 price point.

My guess is on of three things.

            1. This did not come from Iwata himself so someone could have misspoke.

            2. The Foxconn fiasco caused Nintendo to pull out production from them thus increasing the price of production(which should be applauded if true) and being that most of the Wii U production is in Japan the strong Yen against the US dollar would affect the manufacturing costs.

            3. The Wii U is actually more powerful than Nintendo has let on (it possibly does indeed have the Power 7 architecture in it’s custom GPGPU) and the extra cost of it increases cost of production.

I guess we will see what happens.

          • D2K

I stand corrected. Here is an official statement from Iwata.

Iwata: “In addition to the yen’s continuous appreciation, the Wii U hardware will have a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits early after the launch because rather than determining a price based on its manufacturing cost, we selected one that consumers would consider to be reasonable. In this first half of the term before the launch of the Wii U, we were not able to make a profit on software for the system while we had to book a loss on the hardware, which is currently in production and will be sold below cost. Our loss has therefore widened during the second quarter in spite of bringing the Nintendo 3DS hardware back to profitability. Although we expect our financial performance to be revitalized, under these circumstances, unfortunately we cannot say that we will achieve “Nintendo-like” profits within this fiscal year.”

So he basically is saying that the cost of manufacturing the Wii U is greater than $300 US dollars. It kinda sounds like the Wii U would have sold at a loss anyway even if the Yen was appreciating so fast.

Forecasting a second-straight yearly net-loss from Nintendo is definitely uncharted waters. I hope they don’t burn up all their Wii and DS profits moving into the next-gen.

I guess this is a microcosm of how bad the world economy is.

    • Nintendude

I did not expect them to say that at first.

  • Darksauske75

We will just have to wait and see what happens!

  • RedRocBoy

Man I really hope they can do it. I really want the N to win. Can’t wait for more game announcements.

  • Reali-tGlitch

Considering the fact that Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate is scheduled for March 2013, I don’t think they will have a problem reaching that goal at all.

  • metroidfusion2

Why are so many people on this site so stupid lol nintendo is most likely doing what they did with the wii there will be a barrage of commercials on anything that can play commercials then the stupid ass masses will know about the wii u then they will play it ay several stores then they will buy it

    • NintendoMan :D

  • ssb4 3dsFC3007 8585 6950

Honestly I think the Wii U will perform to a similar scale as the Wii, selling between 5-6 million consoles by march 2013. If its 6.1 or above, Nintendo has clearly won the 8th gen console war has already started kicking Sony’s and Microsoft’s butt.

  • Lord Carlisle

I went to a Best Buy earlier today. I had terrible luck.

They had one Wii U demo game available, and it was Rayman Legends. Rayman Legends happens to be one of the only Wii U launch window games that requires you to look on the gamepad as WELL as on the TV screen… the TV sync button wasn’t working, and the demo station TV screen just kept playing trailers for Wii U games… long story short, I didn’t get to play the system.

But I WILL say that the controller itself was just downright awesome. It was lightweight, but not TOO light, and felt great in my hands… it wasn’t clunky or blocky at all. And the screen quality was really good.

  • Carlos Hugo

Si nintendo buscara tener su antigua penetración en el mercado latino (lugar que ahora esta ocupado por Sony y en mayor medida por MS) 5.5 millones seria una cifra muy pequeña.

If Nintendo look to have his old penetration in the Latin market (place that is now occupied by Sony and more by MS) 5.5 million would be a very small number.

    • NintendoMan :D

      Hables ingles?

Oh sorry didn’t see the second part. lol 😛

  • Captain Potato

Here’s to the pioneers, the ones who took the leap and bought an NES! Here’s to the hero, who traveled endless dungeons and fought all sorts of creatures to rescue that damsel in distress! Here’s to the fans, who worked their way to their very own Super Bowl! Here’s to the dreamer, who realized their fantasy was never final! Here’s to the fighter, who knew that by waiting for the right moment he would catch his opponent with his pants down. Here’s to the driver, who without his agility, skill, or perhaps even a blue spiked shell, may have never won the race! Here’s to the soldier who made it through the war, but spent most of his time playing multi-player with his friends online. Here’s to the bowler with the perfect score, the dancer with the best moves, or the band member with spectacular rhythm.

All of these experiences would probably not have existed if not for one company and one alone! Other companies have tried to cash in on what this company has accomplished by competing with or even “imitating” what this company has revolutionized, but the overall scope of this company’s library is legendary…and even the competitors most hardcore of fans have a soft spot for their childhood love…NINTENDO!

    • Smokey cheese

Captain potato, I salute you sir.very well said.

  • logan7699

this holiday season they just need to be able to restock the stores..and they can sell that in the U.S alone…

  • deSSy2724

notice the part: “according to the 3D Mark Score, this is as fast as a Mobile Version of a Radeon HD 7970, which is almost equivalent to a mobile version of a Nvidia 680. “

  • Schizza

They slashed their budget due to the high exchange rate of the Yen (which many Japanese companies are doing). Not because of poor 3ds sales. Get your facts right.

  • Devaztator78

    @Captain Potato
Sir I agree with you 1 million percent.
If it wasn’t for Nintendo to save Atari’s mess, there would have never have been a Xbox or Playstation or any other system who rivaled Nintendo at all!!!!!
    Hail the Big N!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ljink

5.5 Million is less than the Nintendo Fanbase, the problem will be supply&demand.

As a side note, I hear they’re selling it at a loss. So everyone that complained about the price, Nintendo cared enough for the consumer to make a reasonable price without thinking of profit! They’ll be rewarded. So all you potential PS4 and 720 owners, DO NOT EXPECT THE SAME LOVE! You will pay $600/$700 bucks! Now, hows that $300 sound?

Plus 5.5 million may be an understatement. Around the holidays large families will need something everyone can play. New Super Mario Bros. U will be that game. No it’s not the best/original game but it will please all kinds of gamers. I believe 2014 will be the year of Wii U. With a Zelda, SMG3, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Nintendo will be smoothly sailing across the sea that will be Xbox720 and PS4.

    • Smokey cheese

When I first heard the price of the Wii u it seemed kind of more than I was expecting but now it seems more than reasonable.

  • Tobbe
