Nintendo Southwest Partnership Stunt
Nintendo continues its marketing efforts in new and surprising ways, as today a Southwest Flight from New Orleans to Dallas was awarded with Wii U consoles and upon landing the 100 passengers had a chance to take pictures with Mario himself. Customers were surprised during the flight and representatives from both Nintendo and Southwest were on board announce the news.

“As Southwest’s video game partner, our aim is to bring smiles to travelers and Southwest Employees through the fun of Nintendo video games.”

This surprise kicks off the partnership between Nintendo and Southwest. Nintendo will be setting up Wii U gaming lounges in Southwest’s most trafficked airports between now and December 22. Passengers will be able to play games like Super Mario 3D World at the following locations:

  • Dallas Love Field
  • Chicago Midway
  • Denver
  • Atlanta
  • Tampa Bay
  • St. Louis

If you’re not going to be traveling during these dates, you still have a chance to win a Wii U console and a pair of roundtrip tickets from Southwest. You can visit the Southwest Nintendo site here for your chance to win.

  • Brandon Gardner

Nintendo is really doing great at their marketing…. Finally! Can’t wait to see them take up another notch in 2014…. Wii U all the way

  • Kenshin0011

The marketing efforts of Nintendo the past few weeks have me SERIOUSLY impressed! This is what they need to get the wii u into the vocabulary of holiday shoppers and gamers alike. I have good hope that sales will continue to surge

  • Joseph Parsons

Nintendo that a super good Idea bc 1000 of ppl go to the airport a day

  • Googs

    That’s the best!

  • Luciano

  • lilmc01

      • fireheartis1

I’m not a really big AVGN fan, but that was pretty cool. Man I miss getting Nintendo Power of the news stands/at the store. It was one of my favorite if not my favorite gaming magazines of all time.

      Wii U! Wii U! Wii U! Wii U! Wii U!

      • WheatleySonic101

        Oh look. An ambulance.

  • Relick

    This is actually…

…the best thing I’ve seen Nintendo do in a long time. It is absolutely genius. Shame all of the advertising recently has been purely North American, the UK and Europe sales of the Wii U are abysmal and are where most attention needs to be.

    • D.M.T

It seems like Nintendo focuses on one thing at a time. The reason why their marketing sucked earlier this year was because Wii U didn’t have enough games. Now that the Wii U has enough games, they are advertising the console in North America and then when sales are good in North America, they will put their focus on marketing the console in Europe. Now they are going after the casuals and then when they’re done they are going back after the hardcore (Nintendo) gamers by releasing Super Smash, X, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart, Shin Megami X Fire Emblem etc.

      • Erik

They actually did increased more advertising and made it to other channels as well (for example during a new Big Bang Theory episode they cut to a Wii U commercial featuring 3D World.) Im happy they are doing it and they should do more and spreading it on other channels or big events such as the Thanksgiving football game(s) and more.

  • jjbredesen

Dam, i want to be on that flight…

  • GameBoy1979

Not sure how well this advertising endeavor will “fly”, but looks like Nintendo is really making an effort to “rise” to the occasion.

On a serious note, I hope the Wii U will really “take off” after this.

    Yep, I went there.

    • AkaLink77

      No Pun-Nintendid

      • GameBoy1979

Good one! I’m glad you saw the “Link” there, ha!

        • PS4/WiiU

          damn, you’re amazing at puns

          • GameBoy1979

I only seem to take it to the “next level” when talking about video games.

          • The Clockwork Being

Well you get a ”1up” from me for making such good puns.

        • NintendoNoob

          Just stop Nintendoing around
          Yep… Best Punner ever…..

          • Simon Stevens

            That was awful…..

          • NintendoNoob

            I know D;
            I tried… And failed

        • Random12multi

Nintendo’s starting to dig themselves out of a “Pit”

      • The Clockwork Being

        Well Excuuuuuuuse me Princess!

  • I don’t get why people continue to say Nintendo isn’t advertising to the core gamer when the core gamer should already know what a Wii U is by now and what to expect from one. They made it clear that they’re trying to reach younger gamers first and the best time for the core gamers to buy a Wii U is 2014.

  • Michael Ocampo

I MISSED THIS PLACE SO MUCH!!! I’ve been off here like two weeks to not get any spoilers about those 3 AWESOME GAMES that came out last friday. (On Topic): This is Awesome Nintendo but let’s also see some MAJOR ADVERTISING!! 😀

  • Simon Stevens

😀 this is incredible, I wanna fly with Nintendo airways!

    • readypembroke

      What about the Pokemon planes?

      • Shota

pokemon trains. because you here a pokemon medley

when its stops at a station. yep i’ve been in japan

  • Gameonfool

now they have to give them away

    • Justagamer

      Yeah but heck it works

    • Did you have the same feelings when Sony Partnered with Taco Bell to give away free PS4’s? How about any of the endless future promos that are bound to feature the PS4 and/or XBOX One.

This type of promoting is not new.

    • Rinslowe

      So, so butthurt…

  • Shane ♓

It’s stories like this that make me seriously question their decision to release the console a year ago. They clearly understand they need to market the system and know how to do it. The fact that it took a year after release before properly promoting it just makes it feel even more rushed. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Wii U and don’t regret getting it day one. I’m just glad to see them stepping there advertising game up as it is in dire need of it this holiday season.

    • Nintendo was more than likely not expecting the drought that came upon them this year. Honestly; they were pretty excited to get third-parties on board – but instead, they’ve been getting shafted by them all year.

N didn’t advertise the system because there was no games; and with no games, what’s the point of trying to sell a video-game console? But now the games are here – big games – and even bigger ones are following (and that’s just what we know about). It’s becoming more and more clear though; they’re pulling the 3DS Maneuver 2.0:

      – System is released.
      – Really bad drought.
      – Low sales.
      – Doom-&-gloom all around.
      – Cut the price.
      – Announce huge titles.
      – Release huge titles.
      – Advertise.
      – Sales increase.
      – Top charts continuously.

…So far, they’ve gotten up to “Sales increase”. I smell awesomeness.

      • Rinslowe

“N didn’t advertise the system because there was no games”

Bingo! It really wasn’t more complicated than that. Haters gonna hate though…
And so an entire horde of shifty little trolls came out to sow dissent among the masses. Almost worked too, ha… lol Almost.

  • Wow! If this isn’t advertising; I don’t know what is.

  • Jack5221

Brilliant idea by Nintendo, especially since a lot of people will be traveling for the holidays – Myself included! Im visiting my parents in LA, so I won’t be passing any Wii U gaming lounges… But ya know? Its okay, I bring my Wii U in my carry on. All I need is a plug and BAM! I got my own VIP Wii U Lounge, JUST FOR ME, NO SHARING!!! 😛

  • Noah

This past year I thought nintendo seemed like they were asleep at the wheel. Now I’m thinking they knew what they were doing the entire time.

Releasing the Wii U a year before the other consoles gave them time to have more games and now that are the new consoles are out, they can promote like crazy. Maybe. Something like that.

  • Ryushi

This makes me so happy that I live in Colorado, and hope to go on a flight soon!

  • Adam

The Sweepstakes is open to legal residents of the forty-eight (48)
United States and the District of Columbia who are 21 years of age or
older as of date of sweepstakes entry.

I’m not sure they know how to count states…. It doesn’t even say the continental 48 states…

Man Nintendo started on the advertising about the right time especially around black friday. Went to my local Walmart and guess what? All the Wii Us were sold out and there was one Wii Mini. About 2 weeks ago I heard a employee there ask the manager “Whats a Wii Mini?” I thought to my self wow from the Wii U now to the Wii Mini?! Also for people looking for Skylanders Swap Force cheap, I seen it for $37 there. I will buy it tonight with my $10 off coupon for Swap Force and possibly might buy Giants as well. Will totally buy Super Mario 3D World ASAP, game looks SUPER fun and plus I need games for my Wii U anyway. About done with Wind Waker HD, stuck on Phantom Ganon which made me so mad I was ready to throw the controller. Also I will buy Swap Force for Wii U to make sure Activision knows that I still own a Wii U and willing to buy Wii U version games from them. Also did get that Azurite (blue) PS3 from Gamestop and its okay. I don’t have any problems with it and I have been playing so much Wii U that I haven’t been playing my Xbox for like 3-4 weeks. At least Nintendo is straightening up the Wii U and advertising it, it really needs it.

  • PlayboyPacquiao

If I had kids and the PS4/XBONE are the only consoles I can purchase..I wouldn’t even let my kids play videogames.. I wouldn’t want my kids to grow up into immature cavemen like you..

    • TheKingJoseph

lmao the butt-hurt is strong with this one especially coming from somebody who names himself after a pokemon ahahhahahahah

      • Matt Elgie

It is funny because you knew it was a pokemon!! Secret nintendo fanboy right here ^

      • NkoSekirei

ur more retarded just like truthteller

    • don’t respond him.

  • TheKingJoseph

    lol i know right

    • NkoSekirei

  • CEObrainz

Nintendo have been selling surprisingly well here in the UK, went to my local Argos the other day to find Mario 3D World, Link Between Worlds and the actual Wii U Console sold out. Asked about the next batch and got told they were already spoken for, so I think Nintendo are getting back into a good rhythm advertising wise.

  • Zuxs13

I hope they also advertise their Wireless hotspots they have in some of these airports too. It can be a great deal for 3DS owners.

  • LevenThumps

Nintendo has stepped up their marketing just in time for the holidays.

  • Justagamer

    Wow very Awesome..Thumbs up Nintendo!

  • Justagamer

    You need a tissue?

  • Justagamer

    You mean R.I.P Vita

  • Wow.. So reading through the some of the comments I see that if Nintendo partners with another company to advertise and give away products it is cheap and pointless. Wonder if they think the same about when Sony partnered with Taco Bell to do the same thing? Not sure who Microsoft has partnered with but I am sure they are doing the same thing in some fashion. Bunch of hypocrites.

To me this is brilliant.. People travel a lot this time of year and SW Airlines is very popular.

    • InsaneZucchini

Pretty sure Microsoft has partnered with Doritos and Mountain Dew. (othersI’msurebut…) Target is even giving a $10 gift card to anyone that buys Doritos or Mountain Dew with an Xbox One game. What kind of deal is that, I mean I wouldn’t pass it up should I be buying an Xbox One game there, but that’s a pretty silly deal lol.

  • Too bad they didn’t market like this from day one :/

  • NkoSekirei

  • NkoSekirei

we all know ur a 10 year old squeaker with no life

  • Ibi Salmon

A bit slow on the news, guys.

  • Jack5221

And you must live in your moms basement since all you do is troll / down vote people on this website… Pathetic.

    • readypembroke

      right on bro!! 😀

    • stop talking him

  • Jack5221

Nintendo made gaming what it is today. They saved it from dying back in the 80s. There would be no “True gaming consoles” today if it weren’t for Nintendo. You wouldn’t know that though, because you’re a 2000s baby who grew up with PS2 and Call of Duty.

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

Damn, that is something you dont see every day, that is proably one of the most generous things ever!

  • ZeldaFanzzzz

WHAT THE??!!! Oh time to buy some plane tickets.

  • Nathan Verbois

Wow, what a great idea! Everybody likes free stuff. Even if many of the people who received a free Wii U were not interested in one themselves, it’ll make a great gift that they didn’t have to purchase. Either way, everybody wins!

  • Jake

Nintendo is doing a great job. I was wondering why it got so quiet for a while. See, Nintendo is an international business. They have a plan. Why do you think they delayed wii party u, and wii fit u? Nintendo’s 2013 holiday plan is to attract the more casual player. They won’t buy xb1 or ps4 so Nintendo has a huge advantage. Sure they sacrificed the summer but thy have a a game a month since July. In 2014, they come back to the gamer with some mass-appeal like yoshi and mario kart. A lot of ppl think Nintendo just does stuff, no, they think of a plan b4 they do it. Nintendo is truly amazing

  • Nathan Verbois

Next stop, the Oprah Winfrey show!

  • doubled241

is it just me or does anyone else think that a remake of turok, dk64, or super mario 64 would sell consoles????? i can always dream i guess

    • TechBoy1212

DK64 HD reboot is my biggest request since the original Wii launched (or a game very much like it). Original was the best for it’s time! 🙂

  • Arthur Jarret

Abou time they started to advertise this thing. I think advertisements would have had much more impact while the competition was not yet released, though…
But hey, better late than never.

  • InsaneZucchini

This is good. Nintendo has a literally captive audience during the flight, not like they can walk off the plane. Then they can tell them about the Wii U, maybe allow some to try it out, convenience of the gamepad’s portability and all.

And while waiting at the airport playing the Wii U gaming lounge will be a great way to pass the time. People just passing through can try it out for themselves. Learn what the Wii U is, what it’s about, decide whether they enjoy it or not.

Every time 100 passengers of the flight get a Wii U for free they’ll share it with people they know which could allow interest to spread. Nintendo knows that it’s difficult to explain exactly what the Wii U is to everyone, so the best way to let them know is to get it in their hands. Letting a captive audience try it out is one way. Giving some away for free is another that expands outside the airline to whoever those people choose to share their experience with and those they they choose to play it with.

  • DK_Hadouken

“… while the PS4 and X1(to my surprise) are sold out.”

So you were expecting them to not sell?

  • Akatosh

All of a sudden… Wii U advertising. FINALLY BOUT TIME!

  • Joe Dawson

Will the TSA allow these things to go on a flight? After all, they can be used as a weapon! People may need to get groped real good after getting caught with one of those…especially if you are handsome or pretty.

  • TheGamerGeek128

Serious step up from the Pottery Barn.

Sweet! That’s pretty cool haha, doing good Nintendo! I entered just in case too. 🙂
