Thankfully Nintendo understands that slow Wii U sales can be attributed to a lack of marketing and public exposure, as the Japanese company will be showcasing several Wii U and 3DS games coming up this weekend at South by Southwest. The festival takes place in Austin, Texas and is a week-long affair from March 8th to March 17th. Nintendo will be showing off several unreleased Wii U games, making this the best opportunity we’ll have to see these games before E3 comes in June.

Nintendo will have available for fans to try:

Wii U Games

  • Pikmin 3 (Wii U)
  • The Wonderful 101 (Wii U)
  • LEGO City Undercover (Wii U)
  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U)
  • Need for Speed Most Wanted U (Wii U)
  • Wii Street U powered by Google (Wii U)
  • New Super Mario Bros. U (Wii U)
  • Nintendo Land (Wii U)

3DS Games

  • Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
  • LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins (3DS)
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity (3DS)
  • Kersploosh! (3DS)
  • HarmoKnight (3DS)
  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (3DS)
  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate (3DS)
  • Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS)

And that’s Nintendo’s problem summed up, they are showcasing games at this event, that are launch titles, now over 4 months old! If there is one thing I have learnt recently, is that the gaming world moves on from titles quickly. I’m fairly happy to continue playing my collection of 8 games on my Wii U, but other people seem to move on quickly. Showcasing old games is not going to help them, unfortunately.

    • jcnba28

Half of the games on that list aren’t even out yet so cut them some slack.

      • Well to some extent aren’t you proving his point? I mean, Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 were suppose to be release during the launch window (which is end of March) and with no release date on either yet, I’d say not much chance of that happening.

Like Nintendo, love the Wii U, but really no excuse for these two games not even having firm release dates yet, let alone not coming out in the launch window.

Two of those games release this month (MH3U and Lego City) so sorta anti-climatic to be able to see those two games instead of something new.

And Need for Speed…..Isn’t this just another port of a game release on PS3/Xbox, or am I think of something else? Because more ports of old games is not going to cut it.

        • Nathaniel Lopez

I think the new NFS game is an entirely new entry in the franchise.

          • david daniel wharton camacho

it isnt but it has better everything… and using it as an excuse for more games is not cool, i like the nfs games but they need to promote their 1st party tittles not the 3rd ones that will make no difference as its even coming this month!

        • Rinslowe

This is where the Nintendo difference comes in to play… Pikmin 3 is a first party title, so we can assume fairly accurately any delays will only ensure we get the most stable and polished version when released. Wonderful 101 has been looking very intresting and is likely in the same boat as Pikmin right now with QC. Both games look set to be great titles and I don’t mind waiting for finished versions to hit the shelves and kick Wii U haters in the balls later next quarter.

      • Ibi Salmon

Not even half. Just 3(4 if you’re counting the 3DS section).

    • There are two launch titles on that list that have been out since launch. The other is software that was just released and the rest are games that have never been seen before.

    • Fred

Of the Wii U “games” (Google maps is not a game) only 2 were launch games the other 5 have not yet been released. I’d love to go there and try out Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, and Lego City! Those 3 games are system sellers!

    • Colin Tosh

“one thing I have learnt recently, is that the gaming world moves on from titles quickly.”

Er…. no. I, like many other individuals, replay my games and enjoy the ones we really like. And if you still aren’t convinced ask all the people who play CoD every year whilst waiting for the next installment.

Sorry but your comment makes no sense.

      • Michael Workman

Actually, he’s right. Sure, people replay their games, but when it comes time and they want to buy a new one, they want something that hasn’t been out for three months or more.
Just the other day, I got my tax return, I have money burning a hole in my pocket so I look to see what Wii U games are out, and it’s the same ones as were out several months ago. Instead of buying one that would have been fun, but old, I decided just to hold off. Nintendo lost an easy $60. And that happens often.

      • RyuNoHadouken

you cant compare CoD because the online multiplayer is what keeps people playing, not the campaign.

    • It would help showcasing the launch games for those who don’t have a Wii U. Still, you’re right in stating that most of those games aren’t going to help the Wii U’s case. 5 pieces of software you can try now or have already seen, and LEGO City Undercover will be released shortly after the event concludes. I would try Pikmin 3 and TW101 at the event, but again, these are titles we already know about and still haven’t gotten any solid release date information.

I do hope we get some confirmation of a release date for Pikmin 3 and TW101 during SXSW, as well as some surprises from Nintendo. Maybe a tease of what Retro is up to…

I agree with what you say but Nintendo has always been secretive and slow to reveal their hand. They might be waiting for E3 for that. I am just glad that they’re bringing the U to this, marketing a bit, and having many that haven’t even play with a U yet get a chance.

I truly believe that once a gamer holds the Gamepad in their hands and actually plays on the U and sees how added that touch-screen is, is when it will change peoples minds on the U. But I also think Nintendo has to do way more marketing, TV, Print, etc.

    • [000]

Actually, it will help them. There are only so many people that even know about the Wii U.

    • WiiUltra

Why do people take everything Nintendo does so seriously? Like its the end of Nintendo? You people need to get over yourselves. They are showcasing games at an event. Woop-de-fu**ing-Do! Not a big deal. Any showcase is better than no showcase. E3 is around the corner, and thats when they will possibly reveal their big titles.

      • Sneferie

Wii Ultra would’ve been a much cooler name for the Wii U.

        • Nathaniel Lopez

I think they should have dropped the “Wii” part altogether, but I understand, or I think I do, why they decided to leave it as is.

          • Revolution5268

well from what can see its stupid if they drop the brand name, its like sony drops the PlayStation name just because it did not sell well on ps3.

          • Grammar Nazi 2000

Wii U = “We and you”

          • Rinslowe

Having sold nigh on a hundred million Wii’s and taking into consideration the “we and you” aspect of asymmetrical game play… Wii U is pretty spot on.
            But, yeah…

        • Barters

I agree 100% with this comment. I have mates who still think its a Wii controller.

        • Revolution5268

i think nintendo can’t use ultra due to konami has the right to that name or something….

          • Grammar Nazi 2000

            Lots of people use “ultra”

          • Rinslowe

The word “Ultra” does not belong to Konami…

          • Revolution5268

thats why i say ” I THINK”, but yeah i remember n64 used to be called ultra 64.

          • Pikachief

It used to be called the Ultra Nintendo, but people were making fun of Nintendo because it went from Super -> Ultra. I kinda wish they would’ve changed wii and wii U when they were made fun of to.

Also: I’ve said it a million times over the span of the whole internet: no one knows what it is!!!! After playing the wii U with my girlfriend on several occasions, after her mii had racked up probably 8 hours, she still thought the wii U was just a wii controller attatchment. Almost anyone I bring the wii U up to doesn’t even know it exist. It’s not selling well because no one knows what it is. That’s it.

    • Ugslick

You have to understand the difference in demographics.

A Wii U showcasing (unless they bring Zelda, and major unannounced/in development titles) will NOT bring them sales from the ‘gamer’. The gamers of the world already have seen the Wii U, and the best place to impress and make a sales pitch to that demographic is at a gaming specific media intense and large scale event such as E3.

On the other hand this I guess is to get it into the hands of people who maybe got a Wii before, but were never interested (or never even knew about) the upgrade to a Wii U. This is most likely trying to appeal to, and get into the hands of the mainstream so called casual consumer market. Which is smart, because those people are going to buy hardware in large quantities if the Wii U becomes ‘popular’ enough. It will only become ‘popular’ in mainstream media through public impressions like this.

The Wii U will sell to gamers through E3, with the new 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Monoliths game, Retros game, Zelda, The Wind Waker, Smash Bros, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem + other unannounced future internally developed games, or third party collaborations (which if rumors are true Nintendo has at least one, bigger than Bayonetta up their sleeve, and possibly more).

    • WarioForever

So, when I buy Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in July, then there will be no people online? Please, answer

  • Nintedward

I will be buying every single 3DS game on that list and all of the Wiiu games apart from NSMBU , Nintendo Land and Wii street U which I already own…

    That’s a nice ass list.

  • can someone tell me why I got the sunday paper, read the target ad, and it said lego city undercover march 17?? im pretty sure its march 18. I made a bet with my grandma, who says its the 17th. someone please HELP!!

    • Noteak

Why did you make a bet with your grandma over this?  Also, I thought it was coming out on the 18th too

      • Nathaniel Lopez

One of Two things will happen.

        A) They arrive at Target on the 17th and sell them the same day, as I’ve heard this happens sometimes. Someone losses a bet.

B)They arrive at Target on the 17th which led whomever made the weekly flyer, circular, or whatever you want to call it, to mistakenly put down the arrival date instead of the actual release date. Someone losses a bet.

      • idk, but it was her idea.

  • guest

this is just what nintendo is show casing at the event. there will be other third parties with their own show cases at the event. it will be nice to see these games in action.

  • Αίας Ταρνάρης

    This is sad

  • Genesect4ssb4

Release date is all that matters. I could care less about Pikmin 3 (which is my second most wanted Wii U Title after SSB4) if it has no release date. For all I know, it could come out in the next 3 years! Gimme release dates! And spring is almost here! Can’t wait for the BIG miiverse updates!

    • Srpg2ishere

Ssb4 needs to be out now. -_-

      • Laud

Yeah, screw that developer who’s arm muscles are rupturing, THIS GAME NEEDS TO COME OUT NOW!

        • Genesect4ssb4

u better be kidding, that stuff destroyed my grandpa’s arm back in the 80’s (i wasn’t even a thought, im a product of the 90s)

          • Laud

I’m not kidding, that’s what’s happening to Masahiro Sakurai and it’s preventing him from working and there are people pushing for a release in 2013, that’s crazy.

          • Genesect4ssb4

well the casual fans.. The core fans (aka most of the Gfaq, neoseeker, and smashboards members, as well as awesome people on miiverse *cough Jam, your self, Hayden, Ian, Twister, etc cough*) know at earliest will be a year from now, but delayed until Summer or Holiday 2014

          • Link

Core fans and GFaqs do not belong in the same sentence. That place is infested with trolls and casual gamers who think they’re “hardcore”. The 3DS board is probably the only civilized board left on that site.

          • Genesect4ssb4

true, but there are several users on Gfaqs (Limelight788, Snakey, Kooky_Von_Koopa, etc) who are serious smash bro fans.

        • Srpg2ishere

  • David

    I can’t wait for the wonderful 101!!!!!!

  • what I really want, is a lego city undercover Demo on the Wii U esop. oh, and lets not forget about N4S! >:D

  • woah! looks the Wii U daily comment section got an upgrade! like a BOSS! >:D

  • RyuNoHadouken

do i make the drive from Dallas? hmmmmmmmmm

  • Gabe Hoffman

Happy to know Nintendo is showcasing Wii U at an event like this. It should help with publicity well

  • bizzy gie

    New comment system.

  • The new comments section doesn’t support one of my browsers for a computer that I can’t change the browser on 🙁 Oh well.
Anyways, unrelated, but does anybody know when PS3 will have a price drop! I’m waiting!

    • Metal_Man_v2

Sony has been adamant about not dropping prices on PS3s anymore. But I’m hoping they will reconsider as the PS4 comes closer to release.

      • Grr, I bought my Wii U on launch day…then my PS3 (original backwards compatible) broke in January. Since PS4 looks useless, I need to pick up another PS3…but I can’t find a good deal anywhere!

        • Metal_Man_v2

You should definitely try to go for one of the bundle deals that come with a game or two, that way you could re sell the game separately if you didn’t want it, and reduce the costs.

          • That’s actually a good idea. I make a point to never sell games, but none of the games in the bundles look good. may as well sell em.

  • darkstar18
  • Holyfire

    Austin Texas?!!
Ahh they wouldn’t wanting to be surprising everyone with a Retro Studios project would they? Maybe the next Metroid?
Just that news alone would be a system seller, not even thinking about the actual game release

    • Rinslowe

Lol, I also commented that after reading this article… Maybe it’s just the fanboi in me hoping, but it would seem appropriate!

  • Link

The slow stream of games right now is on purpose. Its been obvious since the beginning that Nintendo has been holding onto several if not most of their key games to combat the release of the PS4 and NextBox. Thats why that huge game blowout reveal back in January had most games coming out this fall, the same time the PS4 is set to release and expected the Nextbox will as well. Windwaker HD was confirmed fall, atleast one 3D Mario/Mario Kart is said to be coming fall as well, Monolith Soft’s X got a sales listing for Fall too. Its a risky business decision but it should pay off in the end. Its not the first time a console has gotten off to a slow start, people see 3 months and think its been like this for years now though, either that or they just have a personal vendetta against Nintendo which most people nowadays seem to have.

  • Revolution5268

    that looks fun

  • Tim van Broekhoven

    What is kersploosh?

  • Rinslowe

Isn’t Austin Texas the home of Retro Studios? Nintendo, what are you planning?

  • Rinslowe

On a side note, I wonder how much input Mike Wikan had on Halo 4 with 343 industries?

  • Javy G

Come on they want some thing to show off at E3 which why PS4 is waiting and I guarentee Microsoft will be as well, keeping something secretive about their console.
