Yesterday we told you that hacker group WiiKey claims to have completely hacked the Wii U and its several layers of security designed to protect the console. Nintendo of America have responded to the claims through Kotaku, stating they are aware of the claims the group have been making. “Nintendo is aware that a hacking group claims to have compromised Wii U security. However, we have no reports of illegal Wii U games nor unauthorized applications playable on the system while in Wii U mode. Nintendo continuously monitors all threats to its products’ security and will use technology and will take the necessary legal steps to prevent the facilitation of piracy.” Nintendo is very likely monitoring the situation very closely, as they want to do everything they can to prevent these hacks from becoming viable enough to be sold, which is exactly what WiiKey will be doing if it’s something Nintendo can’t block properly. local_offer Nintendo nintendo of america wii u wiikey stars Further Reading Miyamoto dismisses the Wii U as a “nece 6 reasons to grab a Nintendo Switch before March 6 reasons to skip the Nintendo Switch for now Nintendo Switch Amazon Pre-Order Watch the Nintendo Switch reveal live! NkoSekirei at least nintendo is taking this threat very seriously and if the hackers try boy they will face some legal trouble and jail time as well Barzh How will they go about suing a Chinese company only based in China when not even Apple can do that? Geohotz, hacker of PS3, got busted for putting his name out there and living in not-China. NkoSekirei these hackers arnt from chinese company man these are no lifes that live in their parents basments that just want to bring misery to everyone that plays by the rules and they will be severely punshed regardless on their atempts to hack the wii u and it will surely bite them in the @$$ Steve Well, see, there is a gray area right there. First of all, does Nintendo’s licensing agreement forbid this? If so, then the hackers will likely face charges for breech of contract. If it isn’t, then they have every right to do so, as long as tey don’t try to steal other’s information, because they bought the system fare and square, and there is no legal evidence that says they can’t modify the system to better suit their preferences. (Welcome to loopholes) It would be whole different story if they use it to run or debug unauthororized or counterfeit programs. Then they, and anyone else who does, will likely get sued for copyright infringement. But sadly, there is no proof of this at this point. The only thing we know is they managed to exploit the system’s security. Under the court of law, you cant just assume they will take part in such acts. You will have a slimmer chance of winning the case, if that’s all you rely on. Jim Wanstall All hackers should be rounded up and dropped in the middle of the sea with out life jackets Erik Then dump oil and light them up in flames. Quicksilver88 My lord you people are extremist on this….I mean in the end the crackers are just theives and the end user pirates are petty theives. Honestly I would prefer that law enforcement focus their efforts on things like stopping the next Marathon bombing, Sandyhook, movie theatre mass murder, or daily gang murders that happen on the streets of our cities like Chitown and LA. These corperations like Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Apple are billion dollar entities and I think they can take care of themselves….get more creative in your system design and security implementations or shut up and deal is my opinion. Ducked Add Tiger sharks to that sea. Erik And Pirahnnas too! (sorry for spelling lol i tried) Ducked Lol I get what your saying. Would be a nice addition. Erik If they live…Nuke them to the point of existence. Jennero Rossi Here is the problem. People don’t understand what a hacker and what a cracker is. These people are crackers. Most of the technology used today was made by hackers. So please understand what you are talking about before you make a statement like that. Ignorance… fireheartis1 Ha ha yes finally somebody who understands the difference between the two!! I can’t stand the fact that society as a whole will call these people hackers. Nintendo themselves should know the difference yet they still use the socially accepted hacker name for this stupid people. Crackers just piss me off. They are only out for themselves and don’t care if it’s illegal to crack the codes of a copyright protected device. All crackers need to thrown into prison for at least 20 years. Maybe they will finally get that what their doing is wrong and a bunch of bull crap. Hackers on the other hand learn how to hack code to create something useful. A real hacker is a paid person to figure these things out. I used call them hackers myself until I went to college and was educated on the matter. Crackers deserve to be punished to the fullest extent for sure man. jay They wanna be pirates right! Threw them to the sea!! Silent Please no, Instead, lets have the pirates. Erik Can’t they just sue them for damages??? Its only best way to get rid of these idoits! Quicksilver88 Possibly but the problem is often the crackers are based in China, HK, or other countries that don’t enforce western copyright or patent laws. In the case of GeoHot the guy that jailbroke the Ps3 Sony went after him hard and then drew the rath of anonymous a hacking group that took PSN twice for weeks on end. GeoHot was just a smart guy in Europe who figued out how to exploit the ps3 and released it for free….he had no money and made no money off his hack. Supposedly Sony evetually settled with him out of court and some people think he even agreed to work for or help Sony but that is not known…..meanwhile Sony lost millions by PSN being down, comprimised their customers credit card info and were generally showed up. So it is tricky. Here is an idea…..build better systems and protection schemes and then when you get hacked….which always happens….make design changes to close the exploits…which they normally do. Taking people to court rarely results in much benefit sow why waste the time and effort especially when its just to scare people and make a point…which entirelly backfired on Sony. Potemkin It’s stupid to blame hackers for giving you full access to a system you own. Believe it or not, not everyone hack their system to pirate games, but also you can create a custom system just fo you. david jarman Maybe because most hackers do damage with it. Almost all online shooters were ruined by hacked lobbies and people running shit through their system on wii. If you enjoy playing unfair online I’m sorry but your part of the minority in the multiplayer gaming community that actually appreciate you people. fireheartis1 Dude please learn the difference my God. A hacker will not harm the system but a cracker will. Crackers are the ones that cracked the code to get an unfair advantage. A hacker would only change the color of the OS or something small like that. A hacker is a paid person who is paid to find the problems that crackers might take advantage of. Wiikey are crackers not hackers. They are not paid by Nintendo to find out the problems. They did it to get their games for free. Take some college computer programming classes and you’ll know the difference. Even Nintendo addressing these people as hackers is ridiculous. I know Nintendo knows the difference, but yet because of society accepting the wrong term for these people Nintendo even calls them hackers. It’s just plain stupid and gets on my last nerve. Adrian The original definiton of a hacker was…a developer who was really really good at writing software. fireheartis1 That’s right man and when you work for a computer programming company it’s still that same definition. They still call the people who crack the code to harm the system crackers. Why they call them hackers for the general publics mistake is beyond me. I can’t believe even companies like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft will call them hackers so the general public gets it. They need to educate the general public not give them the term they want. It irks me badly for some reason. david jarman So your telling me that these people didnt crack any codes while hacking. Hacking actually means to get something do what you want it to do when it normally wouldn’t. Adrian Yeah, I’m a software engineer. My boss calls it hacking when we have to do something really tough or tricky haha. bizzy gie Glad I could make you smile and the comment section was closed off like I predicted. Adrian Hah, you are right! Jeremy Thompson Modding a system in my eyes isn’t bad and yes can possibly make it run better or add apps that aren’t on there and possibly allow to play DVDs like they done with the Wii but Nintendo tried to block people from doing Aurelio Rojas @fireheartis1:disqus hey u think u are smart u aint shit u got all this info from the internet when u saw this post u just google it up thats how u fuck face know this go fuck ur mom and ur dad, u think u know it all if i was there where u are right now i will put my balls in ur mouth so u can shut fuck up, btw ur mom has a smelly pussy tell her to take a bath before she fucks my cock. Silent No need to get nasty. He was just expressing his opinion. Nintendofan Who the fuck cares, whether it’s called cracking or hacking?!? Misconceptions are apparently common. While you may be think you’re the smartest guy on earth, everyone else thinks you’re a nerdish douchebag. If it bothers you so much, I suggest running for president so that you may address this issue to the general public. NkoSekirei i agree with u an dont forget they also hacked ur accounts and demote u for the hell of it which pissed me off and account hopped which was worse then being demoted Zorlac79 This isn’t even barely about giving you control of your system, this is 100% about pirating games and nothing else. If it was about hombrew, custom skins, emulators, etc., then it would be worth something. These guys want to sell you a product that will eventually not work after an update, so you in turn have to buy another and another. Quicksilver88 Well because WiiKey is an optical drive emulator it is pretty much a pirate device but it will be firmware upgrade resistant because the console doesn’t even know it isn’t an optical drive. The only way Nintendo will be able to lock things back down is with hardware modifications the the motherboard or the optical drive on future models, which thet will likely do. They did that with Wii making later models not able to run backups from opticl drive (though you could still use usb hard drive loaders) and after Sony got pwned they changed the motherboard design on series 3000 and 4000 slims so you couldn’t use a flasher on them to downgrade them to run CFW. Look this has been going on since the dawn of gaming and it is always a cat and mouse game. I have honestly been amazed that no one has cracked the 3DS yet and it has been out 2 years! Jeremy Thompson Don’t forget Sony sold people a feature then blocked you from useing it or you couldn’t get online Silent Believe it or not, Most people who break the code, do it for free games. Its illegal and punishable by the law. It is also very selfish. TheLast Doesn’t matter. The fact that you have to say that not “everyone” does it to pirate games implies that there are people that do. And there are, that is what takes precedence in scenarios such as these. Jeremy Thompson Not everyone does though but they don’t matter because your opinion correct? You shouldnt condemn all for the actions of a few or you my friend would fall victim to your own ty Potemkin Thank you! Waluigi Hello Jigsaw, i want to play a game… Dominicruz I’m sorry for nintendo but a lot of people are waiting for this to happen specially on third world countries because games are really expensive.I have been hacking all my consoles ps2,psp,nds,wii,xbox 360,ps3 and using emulators for all consoles and I have a complete collection of every game for each system. Nintendo can’t let this to happen now but the company its a little desperate to sell consoles that may released their sources . Adrian In other words, “I’m broke, so it’s ok for me to steal games. In fact, I’ve stolen every game for every console I’ve ever had. And you know what? I’m completely justified in this. I deserve every game ever made, for FREE.” Dominicruz I’m not going to hack my wii U because its not going to be fun and I also want to help Nintendo that’s why I bought this System I love Nintendo. you may live in the USA $60 its nothing. In south America you got it pay twice + tax . every game store modify consoles and sell copy games like normal or if you are rich or got a good job you could go to bigstores or mall and buy original . you need to be in that situation and the need is really big. Adrian No man. Your circumstances don’t change the illegality of your actions. This isn’t the same as a poor family stealing money for food. There is no way to justify pirating the software. It is stealing, plain and simple. Just own up to it and admit you are stealing. I’m not saying you are a horrible person because you are stealing. I’m just pointing out that you can’t ethically rationalize stealing video games. Silent Basically: ” Im poor so i have to steal games by piracy” You are not only being selfish, because you are stealing the bread away from those who invest their hardworked money and time to develop the game, but also you are blaming your circumstances for your breaking of the law. The law is ”blind” and it applies to everyone, no matter your circumstances. You cant steal even though you are poor. Quicksilver88 I feel for those that live in these countries were retail software is so astronomiclly expsensive. I am curious is you can get eShop or PSN or XBL in your country. I would think this would be a good way for the manufactures to try to reduce piracy in your markets by offering you similiar prices to what we pay in the US for digital downloads? Not only do we get new games for $60 or less but we have a thriving used market as well. I just got Mass Effect3 used for $36 and got free shipping as well. America is going down the drain thanks to the liberals that want to turn this into a socialist country but hey atleart we still get our electronics at the cheapest price in the world! Stenaven Wow. Just, wow. WTF. Nintendo and all the other companies appreciate your support *sarcasm* fireheartis1 Your not a hacker fool your a cracker. You’ve cracked the code for your own benefit. That makes you a cracker which is the true definition of what your doing. Your not a super genius at writing code so your not a hacker. Your just braking the code to get free games, and that right there is stealing and punishable by law. Quicksilver88 Dude you need to settle down or maybe consider pursuing a career in law enforcement……just realize that in recent years the video games business is doing billions in business and surpassed the opmovie industry. Plus with installed bases of 70-100mil the current gen consoles as a % of the market are cracked and pirated less than in past generations. So somethign like way less than 5% crakc or mod systems. The reason that a game doesn’t sell is because it sucks or sometimes because it gets lost in the mass of product that comes out. So stop drinkng the koolaid and understand that it is not always illegal to modify your hardware (this varies by country and product) but it is illegal to run pirated games…..which I don’t condone. Also when you are talking the law realize that China, Russia, and much of S. America doesnt even recognize western copyright law so in their countires they aren’t breaking the law! No NO ONE cares about that simple mistake calm down and stop getting so upset, you are overreacting. Ony I hacked my Wii because I was poor, but now I have a job and I will never hack anymore console (I’m even buying all games that I downloaded, because it’s not fair) I got a job easely, so seriously, don’t hack, be someone GOOD, get a job and pay your 4%-of-a-month-salary game. (I say that because I’m a future game dev and I really don’t want my games to be hacked, like, devs needs money to make really good games.) Jeremy Thompson I’m sure they make pretty damn good money already and pirating games aren’t driving them broke in all honesty ty Ony That resume my point : http://www.greenheartgames.com/2013/04/29/what-happens-when-pirates-play-a-game-development-simulator-and-then-go-bankrupt-because-of-piracy/ Yeah, Nintendo is rich, but piracy don’t only affect big companies, It affects also small studios, and hundred of them close because their games are hacked and not buyed. gamer how about cracking a system so hacks and mods can be made to implement games a company is least likely to release ex. the wii/wii u and earthbound which is only on wii or super mario allstars + super mario world especially if some people own/once owned them. or perhaps banjo kazooie. Cerus98 Don’t put all hackers in the same boat. I hacked my Wii and my Wii Us Wii mode. But I’ve never once used it to pirate games. I use it for the apps, single player cheats and playing import games. To those that say region locking is fine because of language I give you this example. Pikmin 2 Wii version was delayed and eventually cancelled in the US. So I bought a PAL version from the UK. I was playing and enjoying it long before Nintendo finally decided to release it here as a Nintendo Selects game. PAL games are in English so yeah, no language issues. fireheartis1 The reason for the region lock though is it’s copyright law. So by breaking that code you actually broke the law. Look it up I’m not just saying this it’s true. Basically by not knowing the law you just made yourself a cracker not a hacker. Now it’s fine to hack your system to change the OS color or arrange the channels the way you want, but cracking the region lock code is against the law. I hope this makes you realize that what you did is wrong. I would reset your Wii so you don’t get that hefty fine that comes with being discovered. Become a true hacker and not a cracker bro. Crackers are the ones who will go to jail for the stupid things like this. You can prevent this by admitting your mistake and resetting your Wii. It’s completely up to you but if you stay a cracker you deserve the punishment that will soon come your way. rulqua Fuck the law. Do whatever you want. Silent You realize laws are really important? You are alive partly because of laws. rulqua Laws are for niggers. Silent Then we are all niggers. Welcome to my world bro, Where laws apply to everyone. This is not the 1700s-1960s rulqua It’s always 1700 somewhere. Silent I give up. If you think you can do whatever you want, then go punch a cop and get back to me when you come back from jail. rulqua Cops don’t exist Ace J idiot Cerus98 Region lock has nothing to do with copyright. It’s part piracy prevention and one huge part global price difference. By region locking consoles they can have different prices for different regions. Importing games is not illegal. Whether running homebrew is or not is open to debate and has been debated many times. I play legally purchased games on a legally purchased system. No laws have been broken and Nintendo got the money they were due. Jeremy Thompson So many good things can come from hacking but people focus on the bad and Nintendo wants to control where you buy your games and restrict from enjoying your own bought console from its full capabilities Rob Lucci Pirates huh? Guess I have to get back to work…..for Absolute Justice! Noel Canales Am I the only one that sees this as a mistake and an oppertunity for Nintendo to let the masses know this is a different system. I think they should hold a major news conference just to say, “We are changing the name of the WiiU, on the account that “Wii” fired our Marketing team that seems to be drunk on firewater. So “Wii” are now rebranding the system and naming it Nintendo HD, on the account that everyone loves things that have HD listed after it. I can see the titles now, “Zelda HD, Mario HD, Metroid HD” and sequals can be “Zelda HD1,2,3 etc. (•_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■) Johny well.. cmon… we all know that nothing can stop hackers.. its gonna happen eventually… no question discuss You can discourage people from using hacks. Johny yeah i forgot to mention that… the usage of hacks hurts (mostly online) games usually even more than pirating them. i dont condone the hacks usage in online games in any way. Quicksilver88 Honestly I think those that use online hacks are a bigger problem for the industry than pirates. The piracy rate is really prettly low in % numbers….yet it only takes a few people cheating in online games like COD or Halo, or MH to wreck it for everyone which kills the product entirely. I think both Sony and Microsoft have been pretty agressive in banning accounts of cheaters so that is a good thing! TheLast Lol Scrubs trying to defend illegal activity. What a joke, the difference is minimal when it comes down to the wire. Try putting on you big boy pants, and open your childish eyes to reality. WiiUisgettingCODGHOSTSretards How do you make your Wii U glow blue like in the picture? Noel Canales YES I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW TOO. I HAVE NOT EVEN HAD MY GAME PAD LIGHT UP YET. MAYBE CAUSE I HAVE NOT ADDED ANY FRIENDS. ADD ME, MY USERNAME IS THATS14JJ. No It doesn’t really do that. TheSonicVet058 If only there was a way to plug in a USB Gecko without having to soldier it to the system’s motherboard. Personally I never (not even once) pirated a single game on the original Wii. But I did extremely enjoy making RAM codes for it. But the fact that I cannot make RAM codes on this one (not yet anyways) is one of a few reasons I never bought one. discuss I do not approve pirating but can we please stop pretending Gaming companies are only victims? They won’t leave a stone unturned to get your hard earned money. Promise the world but deliver nothing – Diablo 3 Charge your customers monthly but still let them pay a high price for expansions – WoW Show false ingame footage to boost sales – Aliens Colonial Marines Keep charging full price for your flopped game – Aliens Colonial Marines Pretend to be exclusive – Rayman Legends Day 1 DLC which you have to pay for – Mass Effect 3 Copy / paste, charge the full price – Fifa & Sims Make the console incompitable with older games (NGC) and then sell them virtually – Wii U Just a few examples. Cadrion Oh, by the way, piracy is only a PC problem. This is sad that the security may have been broken. I remember when it used to be cool to not pay for games…then I grew up. ejownz6 I don’t see anything wrong with piracy. With the income inequality in America, some people can’t afford to buy games. Those people are better off staying home and pirating games than selling drugs or resorting to prostitution. People who can afford games won’t bother with piracy because it results in their console being banned and it’s cumbersome when you have to patch various games to work after new security updates are released. Miles Phillips Sorry while I agree people should not be in the street’s selling drugs, resorting to prostitution etc. I don’t believe in unnecessary stealing. Video games are a luxury not a right and if you can’t afford gaming you don’t game, PERIOD! Sorry but it is a sorry ass excuse the whole I don’t have enough money to buy games legally when I can wait a few months/year later and get games etc. much cheaper instead of STEALING someone else’s hard work and TAKING money from the developers and there families! I would only be ok with stealing if it where a life and death situation, pirating media is not a life and death situation. In the end if you can’t afford to buy video games legally you should not probably game and save money to buy thing’s legally. ejownz6 Pirating isn’t really stealing though. It’s no different than when Jesus gave bread to starving people which causes merchants to suffer. Stealing involves taking a physical item, a limited resource. Digital content can be endlessly reproduced, so I don’t consider it stealing. Miles Phillips Like I said when it is a life and death situation(like Jesus giving bread to starving peopl, or someone stealing food it is different) it is understandable and I consider acceptable givin the person really does need it and cant get it legally through payment. But again pirating media is not a charity, it is art being put out to be sold legally by the developers/producers of said product with the faith that people will buy it legally and they can take home a paycheck for there hard work. Pirating media is unexcusable because it is not something that is necissary to enjoy media that can be bought very cheap legally and it is not mandetory to survive. Let me ask you if a singer like Pink (nevermind if you like them) or Metallica released a few song’s on Itunes and someone came along and copied the songs file and posted the song’s on another website for people to illegally download should they be compensated for that? Is that not stealing? putting time and hard work in to something putting online as digital downloads only to have some low life come and steal and take your chance of making money! Digital or not when money is not givin where it is due the artist/creator of said item loses chance of profit for there hard work, regardless of the Item being physical or digital, or being able to be produced endlessly. Stealing is when someone else decides to not pay for or give credit where it is due to the owner/creator, Period!
