Earlier this year we told you that Nintendo had filed copyright claims on several popular YouTube Let’s Play channels. Usually this means the content is taken down, but the style of copyright claim Nintendo filed allowed the content to be kept up, but showing ads that gave Nintendo revenue instead of the individual content creator. This led to many YouTube personalities to state they didn’t plan on doing let’s plays of Nintendo’s games anymore, since there was no longer a monetary incentive to produce that content. It seems Nintendo now realizes the value of these streams as advertising tools, as some are reporting the return of their revenue stream. “I saw the revenue return and I had no further claims made on any of my other videos since the news broke, so I took the leap of faith.” ZackScottGames was the original YouTube personality to bring the whole ordeal of Nintendo filing copyright claims to light, so seeing a reversal on his channel is certainly great. According to Reggie Fils-Aime at E3, the move was done to protect Nintendo’s IP and not against any one YouTube personality. “The fans need to understand that we see the issue, we understand the issue, but, right now, all we’ve done is take the first step to protect our IP.” Overall, it looks like this saga might have a happy ending. Nintendo filed claims on YouTube to claim the content as its own in order to hold up to muddy copyright and trademark laws, but it seems to acknowledge that providing let’s players with a financial incentive to continue playing their games and bringing them to the public eye is better than not having those games on YouTube at all. local_offer Nintendo wii u YouTube stars Further Reading Nintendo loses patent appeal, ordered to pay Nintendo was brainstorming about Switch when Silent This is great! LPs are very fun. Nintendude Looks like the LPers won this war. tronic307 +1 Looks like, once again, the shills are not happy. Downvotes and other childish behavior. I wonder how many Microsoft fans backed their DRM bullshit before that was overturned? Keep it up; you guys are just selling more PS4s for Sony. Ashley King Honestly this is in Nintendo’s best interests. Sure they can uphold whatever claims they need to make sure they’re defending their trademarks and IPs properly, but let’s plays do more to advertise Nintendo games than Nintendo themselves are doing at this point. claudio garcia When is the summer update coming? uPadWatcher Hopefully within a few weeks. greengecko007 Except that it’s not really free advertisement. The money being made from Let’s Plays should be going to developers in the first place, but are instead going straight to the video uploaders. It’s like they are indirectly paying the uploaders for their videos. JB Just think of it as the Developers, in this case, Nintendo compensating the uploaders for advertising/marketing their product. There have been a few let’s plays that convinced me to buy a game. I think this format tells you more about a game than a 30 second ad ever would. greengecko007 There will always be people that decide to buy a game from Let’s Play videos, but there are also just as many people who do not buy a game because of Let’s Plays. If you want more information on how a game plays, there are countless reviews and video game websites to help you. There are also numerous gameplay videos and trailers for most games. JB Good point and I totally don’t disagree with you, as I use all available resources on a game I’m on the fence about. However, (good) LPers bring something that reviewers and gameplay videos and trailers don’t: a grounded, real life perspective. At least in my opinion. DragonSilths The Devs made their money by us BUYING the game. Thats how its always been. They dont get money from people playing their games. They should make money from our voices is what your saying? Nobody should make money off our voices BUT US. The gameplay is a background thing, people watch the Lets Players for the player, he/she is entertainment. val berger Nintendo should go one step further and implement the upload of videoclips from the WiiU on YT. If people get a better idea of the WiiU’s mechanics by watching games in motion, this could really, really help the systems viral marketing. They could for example show a videomask with a dummy gamepadscreen in the lower right corner and the gamescreen behind it, demonstrating what’s happening on both screens. Not sure if they could realize that with the wiiu’s technology, but it people would see how it’s meant to be played, they’d get a better feeling for the WiiUs special features. lonewolf88 it could be done wii U already has a youtube app. hikkerd i think he means something else val berger yeah and I don’t really like the YT app. I’m always using the browser and a YT bookmark 😉 lonewolf88 problem with it is buffering issues they never fixed but if they add it they would probably just update it making it “better” paddle008 what buffering issues? lonewolf88 on alot of videos you will play them and it will buffer for like a min to 30secs every 2mins. paddle008 I don’t have that problem. Maybe it’s your internet. thedeciderU yeah the app is hit or miss for me. it’s advantage is that it plays back in HD, while using the internet app does not, so it’s hard to see the clarity on new game footage. and yes, there tend to be buffering issues now and then. i thought it was because of my router distance…maybe not. Jeffery02 You can play YouTube videos in HD on the Wii U’s browser. Minimize the video on the GamePad and the section of YouTube that usually plays the video should be black. Tap the gear icon and select the desired resolution. thedeciderU wow, i am an idiot for missing that! haha thank you – now it’s far superior to the app. Jeffery02 No problem. It’s not that straight-forward so don’t feel too bad. Anyway, not only is the browser more stable than the YT app, but it also works while a game a loaded, it let’s you look through YT without having to quit the video, let’s you have multiple tabs loaded, and even let’s you quit YT while the video is still playing. thedeciderU yeah, the browser is so convenient. i really like that you don’t have to quit a game to use it, and it’s also quite fast. i’m impressed. val berger yeah. best browser on any console ever. suprasses the ACID test with a better result than the Internet Explorer and just does what it should do. amazing work, creating a working webbrowser especially for a gaming console with a new interface is really one hell of a huge achievement. val berger what I am really missing in the App (maybe I’m just blind) is the ability to play a video on the gamepad. It’s so ridiculous that they somehow didn’t think of users considering to watch content on the pad. They’d just had to mirror the video like the browser does. thedeciderU yes, it’s extremely annoying to not have that option. i remember searching for the first time – you type on the gamepad, but what you type only displays on the tv screen. what were they thinking? haha JB Hey, you just commented this morning about this very subject in the other article! So maybe there’s hope for your idea yet. val berger was thinking the same thing 😉 CharmanderRulz I’m not sure they could run recording software over the top of the games just on the Wii U system not because it can’t handle it but it would need to update many games (mostly the ones that didn’t give enough CPU head room because there was no need at the time) making a big hassle, there’s the matter of editing the videos and voice overs. I think it would be much better for Nintendo to add some sort of Nintendo brand capture card so they could encourage YouTube advertisements, add a basic video editor app (for those who can’t do it on PC) and the only extra thing the Wii U will need to do is add mic recording if that. val berger yeah, I don’t really think Nintendo would do something like that anyways, just wanted to brainstorm, what would’ve been an interesting tool. I just have the feeling, Nintendo would really wonder how much they could achieve with a proper online/socialmedia-strategy. Nintendo Directs are nice for their existing fanbase, but aren’t capable of acquiring new customers. CharmanderRulz I don’t think Nintendo would do something like that too but but it could easily be done by someone as big as Nintendo. I think all of the big 3 have put a lot of effort into there console choices as even all the DRM was (“was” as it looks like they changed there mind) a bad choice for the xBox 1 they still have massive teams dedicated for even small things like menus so we have to trust the professionals. Michael DeVore I don’t think the WiiU has the processing power to do what’s needed for that. The PS4 can do it because it’ll have a bunch of unused processors and memory. It’s easy to do if you have a extra gig or two of unused memory. It’s not so easy when you only have a two gigs total. Even the PS4 will start to have problems with it when you start getting games that fully utilize the system. Video encoding can be a fairly taxing process. Link Slayer Ps4 will have that share button so its going to kinda do that already. From my understanding anyway. Ps4 is going to be a Beast and a force to be reckoned with this next Gen. I really feel bad for the other consoles. I think The Wii U is the only console that has a chance to sell decent because of its name and quality first party titles. I really hope Nintendo puts more money into there first party titles this generation. I really want Nintendo to move up with the times and Do so quality voice acting in there games. But I think the ps4 may even outsell the ps2 Akatosh Umm… in this economy, there isn’t a single next-gen console that’s going to compete well. Just saying. Link Slayer hahahaha did you hear about how the ps4 and xbox one have the highest ever preorders in Amazon History. And also there may not even be enough Ps4s supply might get beat by demand. The ps4 has the right power, exclusives, feel, and most importantly games at launch to make it a winning system. Nintendo may do well because of the price. But it seems the ps4 will dominate this generation and even in a bad econ. Link Slayer of course its too early to tell. But I would almost bet the ps4 has more pre orders than the Wii U has total consoles sold right now. I really from the bottom of my heart hate to say that because I Love Nintendo. Zelda is my favorite series ever though I’m kinda worried about it. Nintendo Hasn’t done anything to wow me on it since OoT. Not saying the games after that wasn’t great they just wern’t wow. I look at games like Final Fantasy 10 and Metal Gear solid 3 when those games came out right around when the WIndwaker did, Windwaker wasn’t even in comparison. Oot was ahead of its time and one of the greatest games ever. But Nintendo with Zelda hasn’t stepped up or been ahaid or even caught up on the Zelda franchise since then. They need to hire people who can really work code and make it as pretty as it can possibly be and have great voice acting. Not talking about link talking of course. But I want the next Zelda to be like a Disney movie if they aint going to be dark and have a deep story. I want to live in the game like I do all the other great games like the last of us and Metal Gear solid. Or Final fantasy for that matter. Im tired of durga durga “Text Text” Gakuako no Hana I have alot of experience with electronic componenent and I can tell you right now that the amount of RAM doesnt matter all that much, what matters is how the system uses it. The WiiU has a good CPU in terms of mid performance so Im pretty sure it can do that. The PS4 most definitely has all the right pieces to do similar things. Also when a system is fully utilized that doesnt necessarily mean it slows down, it can actually cause a good increase in performance because all the parts start to affect how it performs together. There is no longer a reliance on one specific component. Guest For one step further, I think they already have, just they really haven’t advertised it. What I mean, is in Miiverse you can attach a youtube video that you uploaded from your computer. (Obviously not from the Wii U) val berger hm yeah, I guess, I could live with that too. encouraging players to upload videos demonstrating the dualscreen functionality could’ve helped better understand games like ZombiU. Benjamin Desfosses But no one will ever find out because other video game sites don’t report good news about Nintendo, so people will still bring this up. wiiudaily Honestly, there hasn’t been much good Nintendo news lately. Hopefully that’ll change very soon. Elem187 Nintendo was pretty stupid to do this in the first place… How can you not like free advertising of your games? dolphin It’s not really free advertising for them since the LPers get compensation from youtube. It’s more like they are being indirectly compensated, just not from Nintendo lol DragonSilths Well if Nintendo wants to pay us directly thats fine. GuardiansFan i wouldnt go that far…i have gone to these sites watched 5-10 minutes of gameplay and decided against purchasing a title i would have purchased otherwise. They lose sales on these as well i’m sure. Someone who is going to watch an entire clip by the way is more likely to be someone who either isnt going to buy the game or has done what they can and is trying to get ahead. Regardless i think it evens out at the best/worst in the end so this has more to do with trying not to piss off their fans. Wayne Beck I’m just going to say the same thing I said last time. Nintendo never intended to step on these peoples toes. This is just something they had to do to fully take advantage of YouTube. The unintended consequence was this content was Auto-Claimed. Nintendo is a lot of things, Old Fashioned, Over Diligent, a bit Eccentric, but they are not Stupid or Greedy. claudio garcia When is the Summer Update coming?!?! I can’t wait….. iceazeama for what????? iceazeama this is good for like people who show footage and stuff and make videos topics about it. some lets players are really pathetic though……. people that only do lets plays on youtube and dont do anything else video game related. its like, your doing this all for the money if its just all footage of games and you playing it. instead of ding something like avgn or jontron does Super Buu Told you we could change Nintendo’s mind by sending them emails and not being total jerks! Hooray for the gamers! John Andalora Let’s face it: it was hurting their bottom line in every way. People who were putting up LPs didn’t anymore, so free advertising is lost, and people who watched LPs didn’t like Nintendo because of the problems is caused to those making it. Fils-Aime sounds too much like Mattrick right now. greengecko007 It’s kind of sad when a supposed fanbase so quickly turns on a company for trying to protect their own product. Nintendo didn’t have a sudden realization that Let’s Plays are free advertisement, they had a sudden realization that they were losing so called “fans”. How many Let’s Players even have a legit copy of the game? Chuggaconroy is famous for Let’s Plays, and his Pokemon games are all emulated. He is making money off a pirated game, and that’s not right, no matter how you put it. CharmanderRulz Be it I don’t know a single lets player that doesn’t own the game I’m sure there are people who do pirate the games but why shod that stop the people that get there games legit? Also it still advertises the game and gives more chances for viewers to like it and buy the game. greengecko007 The only thing it stops people from doing is making money off something they don’t own. My point was that it’s even worse when lots of Let’s Players use torrented or pirated games to make money from their videos, because they don’t even have the decency to pay for the game they plan to make money off of. If this wasn’t the internet, where copyright is basically a free for all, these people would already be in jail. CharmanderRulz Games are by law protected as an art by multiple amendments meaning the copy you buy is yours to any action that doesn’t harm or change the original so the people that buy the game are within there rights to make videos on it with fair use. As for this taking money from Nintendo you “don’t know what the monetary rate is” so I don’t see how you can judge plus many don’t make money. As you used Pokemon as an example you may know Marriland who emulates his YouTube games but like many it’s only for quality purposes and he owns every game he emulates. “If this wasn’t the internet, where copyright is basically a free for all, these people would already be in jail.” *walks in on friend playing a normal game* Friend: “Oh no! you looked at my screen” Me: “I will go hand my self in!” There are many intelligent and even educational use of IPs on YouTube; try anything by “The Game Theorists” but if that isn’t good enough watch even just 5 minutes of this cultural, educational and even useful information (to many but not all) watch?v=dfqn6lOrb2Q and tell me all lets plays can’t have value. greengecko007 I don’t know what country you are from, but in the US, there are 27 amendments to the constitution and not a single one of them defines video games as art (because “art” is inherently undefinable univerally) and states that you can do whatever you want with them after you buy them. “don’t know what the monetary rate is” Does it matter? Making money off of something that isn’t yours isn’t right. “If this wasn’t the internet, where copyright is basically a free for all, these people would already be in jail.” *walks in on friend playing a normal game* Friend: “Oh no! you looked at my screen” Me: “I will go hand my self in!” There is a very clear difference between letting somebody watch you play a game (which is legal) and making money off of letting somebody watch you play a game (which is illegal). “There are many intelligent and even educational use of IPs on YouTube;” And? We’re talking about Let’s Plays, which are videos that showing a playthrough of a video game. We aren’t talking about game theorists, or just showing game clips. The issue is that people are making money by showing entire playthroughs of video games they did not make. CharmanderRulz I never said how many amendments there are in total So I don’t understand why it was brought up or why you point out that you don’t know where I live (The UK if that will any difference to the topic). The main amendment that legally defines something as an art is the first one. Almost the whole world’s legal systems have defined Games as an art but if that’s not convincing enough the highest level of US law The supreme court of the united states (that even rejects some very serous cases) was willing to test games as an art. Not surprising games where found to have all literary, artistic, political and scientific value defining them as an art. “Does it [not knowing the monetary rate] matter?” well when for many cases that rate is a big fat 0 and considering your case is about YouTubers earning money I think yes. “letting somebody watch you play a game (which is legal)” so these players don’t do this? “making money off of letting somebody watch you play a game” Well by that logic Nintendo is in the wrong because they make the most money from people watching others play games. This isn’t just “about Let’s Plays” Nintendo was blocking lots too “protect our [Nintendo’s] IP” Rather then just rejecting my example of the “game theorists” you would see the link is of “G.G. Plays Mystical Ninja!” GG is a game theorist who makes “entire playthroughs of video games they did not make” and I counted more then 10 cultural pieces of info on the first 5 minutes so why doesn’t it count? greengecko007 1. You know absolutely nothing about government and laws if you think that all countries have the same laws and ammendments. That is why I said that I don’t know where you are from, and informed you that there are 27 amendments to the US constitution. 2. Art is inherently undefinable, because just like beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder. It is entirely opinionated. Some people go as far as saying everything created by humankind is art. That would mean that we ourselves are works of art, because we are created by our parents biologically, we are molded by other humans in society, etc. But enough philosophy on art… 3. Think about what you just said about the monetary rate being zero. Now ask yourself if that makes any sense whatsoever. The answer is no. Nintendo tried to target let’s players making revenue from ads with their IPs as the subject matter. This obviously doesn’t include the uploaders not making money from ads… 4. Yes, it WAS just targeting let’s players. It was not targeting people talking about or discussing Nintendo IPs on youtube like game theorists. Refer back to #3. or even do a quick google search if you have to. CharmanderRulz points you avoided just in my last comment: -how most of the world defines games as art by law -that the most powerful place of law in your country gave games artistic rights -how games and lets plays can have ” literary, artistic, political and scientific value” -How Nintendo make the most money of lets plays -What Nintendo said themselves about why they did this. -the fair use of “G.G. Plays Mystical Ninja!” 1) I never said “all countries have the same laws” in fact when I said “Almost the whole world’s legal systems” both the “s” on systems and the word “almost” would mean the opposite of what you accused me of saying. 2) Every time I talked about games as art I didn’t do so in the form of the option of art. What you (or anyone) define as art is as you said an option and doesn’t change that The supreme court of the US protects games by law as art. Even Brazil (where games arn’t modernized) defines them as ar. 3 & 4) I never said its zero for all people but because how YouTube searches for bad content (a sound an image filter a bit like Google’s “search by image”) anyone using what the filter finds matches for (not just lets plays) can have action taken against them. A LP brought this up (ZackScottGames) so some see this as a lets play thing plus they are more likely to use the game sounds run by the filter then most people. sdmac200600 Pirated game or not, It’s free advertisement. Every LPer I watch, especially Cobanermani456, buys their game legit to do a day one LP of the game so people can decide whether or not they want to purchase the game or not. greengecko007 “Pirated game or not, It’s free advertisement” Not really. Let’s Players making money that should be going to developers is the same thing as developers paying Let’s Players. It’s not free. sdmac200600 Ok so one potential sale lost, even if thousands upon thousands of people decide they want to buy that game and they do, is bad? LPers don’t get paid much at all for a view. It’s like 5 cents I believe. So say that one viewer buys the game. the game creator loses 5 cents basically. It would take a little over 120 views for them to lose a sale of 1 game. 1 game to a possible 120 games is free advertisement…. greengecko007 I don’t know what the monetary rate is per view on video with ads either, but let’s suppose you are right about the 5 cents a view. Considering that ads are on channels that have lots of views, that 5 cents adds up very quickly. Let’s take Cobanermani456 as an example, since you know who that is. I looked him up, and his Let’s Play videos for Sonic Adventure 2 have over 300,000 views a piece. 300,000 views with 5 cents in revenue per view equates to $15,000. And that is one video. It is not a trivial amount of money. But there’s more, Cobanermani456 has uploaded over 1,500 videos to his channel. I hope to God that they aren’t all let’s plays, because otherwise he has made $22,500,000 by playing video games he didn’t even make. That’s criminal. sdmac200600 With the exception of about maybe 50 videos, yes they are all LPs but as I said the amount of money he made in total compared to the amount of sales that Nintendo or any company who published and produced that game made due to Cobi showing off the game is nothing. Would it be nice if those publishers had that 22.5 million? Of course but Cobi gets many many comments that says that people will now by the game after watching a good 3 parts of the LP that developers are getting near 100 million all because he showcased their game. Not to mention, all his games he has LPed are bought legitly (with the exception of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and I think Pokemon White) so he’s not robbing developers and that goes for most LPers especailly if a good amount of the people watching are going out and buying the game. As of june 21, he has 184,502,399 video views. That is a possible $92,251,199.5 each of those developers are splitting and that’s just from Cobi alone. Chuggaaconroy as of today has 531,143,084 video views which is a possible $265,574,542 developers are splitting and not to mention I think Chuggaa does 90% Nintendo games and I know Cobi does 95% Nintendo games so Nintendo alone gets a potential $31,170,014.175 just from them 2 alone. Imagine if I put in NintendoCapriSun in those numbers. Nintnedo is getting free advertisment no matter how much the individual is making because the amount Nintendo are making cancels out the amount the individual is making and that leaves Nintendo or any other company with money in the end. greengecko007 “and that leaves Nintendo or any other company with money in the end” Not true. Nintendo may be a big company, but not all are. Have you heard of Thatgamecompany? Most people haven’t. But I know a lot of people who have heard about the critically acclaimed indie game JOURNEY. JOURNEY has so many let’s plays on Youtube it isn’t even funny. Some of the more popular channels run ads, because the let’s play has thousands of views. Here is an interesting fact though, Thatgamecompany almost went out of business several times. They developed exclusively for Sony, and their games didn’t exactly sell well, despite being highly praised by critics. It is completely wrong for youtube uploaders to make money, hundreds, thousands, or even millions, by playing video games, when the developers are struggling to even stay in the industry. sdmac200600 Exactly. Nobody has heard of them. They aren’t established like the big named developers so of course LPs hurt them. They are an Indie developer. Not trying to sound mean but the industry wouldn’t change at all if Thatgamecompany just went out of business completely. It wouldn’t have the same effect as if EA, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Insomniac, Crytek, Sony, or Blizzard went out of business. When THQ went bankrupted, that changed alo of things and will change all of their IPs that were bought. It’s messed up that any developer could go out of business due to LPs but does it really matter if that developer is barely known? Not really….You can bring up the people who work for them and stuff but indie developers barely has 50 people working for them. It would be different if they had hundreds of thousands of people. ReckoningReckoner Are you seriously saying that free publicity hurt an indie developer? Games like Minecraft, Journey and Fez would not have been nearly as massively popular as they were if it wasn’t for the internet. sdmac200600 When? Please cite the sentence. If you read my very first comments, I said free advertisement HELPS companies. If you are referring to only my above comment, it clearly hurt them if they damn near went out of business several times due to them not getting revenue that didn’t balance out with the LPers revenue……………. ReckoningReckoner Journey was the fastest selling downloadable PSN game of all time. The company went bankrupt while they were developing the game. CyanideInsanity I can’t say for his early ones as I haven’t watched them, but emerald was done via the gamecube’s gameboy player and a capture card, and I don’t believe the dolphin emulator can properly emulate that. Now you may come back with “How can you know for certain?”, if so I say the same for your argument. greengecko007 “Now you may come back with “How can you know for certain?”, if so I say the same for your argument.” Video and audio glitching is always a sign of emulated games. As for his Let’s Plays of old games, what capture card works with Gameboys? CyanideInsanity The gameboy player attachment for gamecube can play GB GBC and GBA games. Oh yeah, there’s also the pokemon stadiums. They can play up to their respective generation games as well with the transfer pak. Now as for glitches, yes emulators can cause them, but so can rendering videos. I’ve had a couple issues where my videos had some artifacts and garbled audio. If you have a specific glitch in mind, which episode and what time, I can’t remember any specifics about that playlist anymore. greengecko007 Does the Gameboy Player also upscale the resolution of the games? Because the native resolution for the gameboy is 144p, while the native resolution for the Gamecube is 480p. But somehow, Chuggaaconroy’s video’s for old games like Link’s Awakening go up to 720p, which I would think would only be possible on emulators. CyanideInsanity His videos are upscaled by his rendering program. Some programs do allow you to stretch the video so it reads natively at the set resolution, however its quality does not actually get better. I’ve used emulators, and their quality is gigantically superior to his video quality, even without video compression. Its the same idea as playing a youtube video at 240p in fullscreen. There are only a few practical reason to do it; youtube allows better bitrates for larger resolution videos, so you can get crisper overall audio quality, and for things to keep their quality, like the backgrounds he puts at the ends of videos now or the “buttons” he puts annotations over for previous next and playlist. DragonSilths In those cases I agree thats wrong. But for people who DO own the game like Tobuscus, ZackScottGames, heck even me. Its perfectly fine. tronic307 Great to see another anti-consumer decision reversed. Nintendo were well within their rights, but hopefully they’ve decided that the negative publicity wasn’t worth it in the end. NkoSekirei well microsoft didnt get till it was alittle too late and now their xboxone image was damage sdmac200600 The LPers I watch was just like fuck it and gave their subs Nintendo content anyways so it didn’t really bother them but now that Nintendo is pulling back on this, they will really go balls to the wall in their Nintendo LPs CyanideInsanity I still feel that nintendo does deserve some of the revenue, after all their content is being displayed. I will not however say who deserves how much, because I have no idea about that. It is good that they’ve at least momentarily stopped with this on youtube because the of nazi-ish content Id match Google has on youtube. I also don’t know if they even allow partial revenue split with content matches. Ducked That’s great. I never realized that popular youtube channel smosh basically advertises every Nintendo game. greengecko007 Smosh wouldn’t have been affected anyway. This was to target let’s players. Whenever Smosh uses copyrighted content, it’s always a parody, which is protected under fair use. Ducked I was just stating it out DragonSilths This is good news, but Im confused since when you upload a Nintendo game video it still gets hit by the “Matched 3rd Party Content” there for you cant monetize it… Magnus Eriksson So, Nintendo revised their greedy policy? Hardly think so. Those leeches are up to something even more sinister. Guaranteed. Jay How is that greedy? Nintendo was only exercising their completely legit and legal rights, however, have decided to continue to allow them to make money off of the videos. It’s a copyright law, they didn’t invent it, so it’s not THEIR policy. It’s the exact same thing you see at the beginning of every DVD movie, or any NFL broadcast.. if you buy a DVD movie, or record an NFL game, have people pay you money to come to your house and watch it, that’s illegal. Same with these games. They should be happy Nintendo didn’t go the extra mile… the fact they didn’t proves they aren’t greedy or sinister. They are incredibly fair. NkoSekirei yea right ea is far more greedy along with microsoft too so dont start troll thedeciderU the more nintendo restricts their content the less free advertising they’re getting; iwata already admitted that nintendo is to blame for their trouble selling the wii u – it hasn’t been advertised… well, no shit iwata. please fix it nintendo! this system is awesome, but not for much longer without notable games AND 3rd party support releasing new cutting edge games, instead of pathetic gimped ports. Johny glad to hear that 🙂 Dez The only people who watch this stuff on Youtube anyway are those who never heard of Twitch. If you streamed on Twitch, you’d have better luck. Hell, I’d love if Nintendo actually heard of Twitch, there are a lot of opportunities there. What I don’t understand is why everyone is so pissed at Nintendo. On Twitch streamers entertain their viewers, they do all sorts of different things to promote their channel, get some revenue, and it also supports Twitch. What their doing doesn’t support anyone really, I barely heard about this crap when there was an article posted a while back. You can say it advertises Nintendo products, but I’m under the assumption they are mostly old games everyone has already. If they are making videos of 3DS and Wii U games then it might be a small form of advertisement. However, if you are advertising things from like the NES, you are not helping and just crying because the publisher/developer won’t let you profit off their content which doesn’t even benefit them in any shape or form. Then it won’t be a mutual relationship it is parasitic, if it is the above two systems it may have some benefits for Nintendo, so they should just let it slide. What concerns me about this backlash is how it can quickly escalate beyond this. Hell, some of those Youtube personalities might want to band together, profit greatly, and Nintendo doesn’t get anything. These small individual things are fine, but the childish manner which they reacted is pathetic. Take something like StarCraft, you can stream it all you like so long as you get a license from Blizzard and only the large organizations have to actually pay a fee to Blizzard to host StarCraft in their events. These content creators need to grow the hell up and stop being so immature. Don’t start flaming Nintendo for attempting to protect their IP especially if these Youtubers are just being leeches tried to make some money off something isn’t even their property. It is a fine line, and think before you bitch. People are so stupid these days, it sickens me. CyanideInsanity I know what twitch is, and I don’t watch gaming videos there. Now I might be bad, but searching for “lets play skyward sword” on twitch nets me nearly nothing of use, while on youtube actually shows videos and playlists of skyward sword LPs. Twitch is better for livestreaming since youtube limits livestreams to certain people, like those partnered with machinima, but I’d have to say youtube is better for archived video series. At the moment anyway. Inviable Gaming Yeah now I can watch DSP play more mario GuardiansFan honestly i never had a problem with nintendo getting the revenue for these videos. as far as i’m concerned the guys making money off these videos are lucky Nintendo has decided to back out….in the end they own the rights to do whatever they want to do with these videos. I have uploaded videos on youtube before and they state you shouldn’t post videos you don’t own the copyright to to begin with….that should have been as far as these guys went with this. Lev M there worried about lets play but what is there to play, if i see no changes by the time the “next gen” consoles come out then i’m going to sell it Alexander Kleinwechter Nintendo, thank you that you have reversed this policy, you dont know how happy i am. Thank you! Nothing5555 This was Nintendo’s plan all along, basically some saber rattling to show they mean business when it comes to their IPs. QWEEFSNAB This is good news for Video Game Reviewers, LPers, etc that actually put work into their videos and deserve the subscribers they have. I understood what Nintendo was doing and they had every right to do it, but it could’ve been handled much better.
