When people discuss how slow the Wii U is selling right now, many people turn to the Nintendo 3DS and say, “Look how slow it was selling until Nintendo fixed it. They’ll do the same with the Wii U.” That’s a common point of argument for many and one that might ring true in the future. A representative for Nintendo explains that the 3DS got off to a great start when it was released in February 26th, 2011 in Japan, but two weeks later the nation was rocked by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami that affected sales. Nintendo cut the price of the 3DS and increased development of software for the machine. This lead to fewer developers being available to work on Wii U launch titles. We launched the Nintendo 3DS on February 2011 and sales were strong. Two weeks later we were hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake and that stopped the momentum. In August of the same year we lowered the price from the initial 25,000 Yen to 15,000 Yen, and enhanced software development at the same time, to enrich the game line-up. That paid off and we regained momentum in Japan, but due to that we could not spare many developers for the Wii U (released in November 2012), and that led to the slow start of the console. While many may say that the impact of the earthquake had no impact on North American sales, that’s likely untrue as Nintendo is known to focus on their Japanese markets first. With the price cut and the Ambassador program for the Nintendo 3DS, many hope to see something similar to kickstart the Wii U into high gear. Now that the 3DS is selling well though, we’ll be able to see Nintendo focus more efforts on the Wii U and hopefully perform the same turn around trick twice. local_offer 3DS Nintendo wii u stars Further Reading Nope, 3DS is not dead. It just had its best m Here’s how insanely big that new Pikach Yousif Alromaithi You remember guys what I said on my past comments this is logical thinking. Don’t ever consider me stupid. Mochlum I guess it makes some sense…. Mario Yeah… I can’t deny the fact that many video game companies were touched bad by that earthquake. Pebbicle I don’t care about what happened in the past, plan and focus on the future! Yousif Alromaithi That’s what I am saying but people think Nintendo and so am I. Not just Nintendo was affected but also the PS Vita. That’s the ugly truth. Brandon Gardner I agree I am tired of all these excuses Nintendo keeps giving every week… I know people are going to hate me saying this but its the truth…. Nintendo needs to focus on the future or get left behind…. I never bought a system outside of Nintendo but I am thinking about buying another console system and just keep my system for Nintendo only games… I am holding on to my Wii U but don’t know how long I can hold on for. Jandkas Well then sell it, we don’t need you, while you’re sobbing over having to buy a wii u at a higher price again when the games come. Brandon Gardner Nobody is sobbing over anything… I am just speaking the truth thats whats wrong with Nintendo fans you can’t admit when they are doing wrong Yousif Alromaithi Nintendo is not wrong fans are Wrong. Fans want Kid Icraus for a long time they brought the game did it sell no. Fans want F-Zero did it sell no. Fans want Star Fox did it sell no. Fans want new IP did it sell no. Who is wrong now. Jon you are speaking predictions and assumptions… not truth. The Clockwork Being No you make sense. I am going to own a PS4 and a Wii U, My Wii U being my primary console. There are some games that the Wii U will have and the PS4 will have but the gameplay will win it for me. All the multiplats that are coming to Wii U will bought on the Wii U simply because of off-TV and good gameplay. Hold on to your Wii U. IT will be worth so much without a doubt Steven_Segal Yeah, then he will regret it when Smash Bros. X, Bayonetta, Mario Kart 8, new Zelda and who knows what Mr. Iwata will announce in 2014. The Clockwork Being A bunch of unannounced games. Kid Icarus Wii U. Metroid U, Star Fox U. I want Nintendo to revive almost all their franchises for Wii U Steven_Segal Nintendo does not need new IP they just need to revive F-Zero, Star Fox and Kid Icarus! The Clockwork Being Well Kid Icarus needs to be revived on Wii U since the game on 3DS was so good. They also need to revive other franchises. And some new ones would be good. Yousif Alromaithi Look boy if you wanna sell it up to you. I don’t care what Nintendo fans settled a Wii U for. Wii U has good games like ZombiU, Pikmin 3, NSMU, Nintendo Land, Hyper Switch Force, Sonic Lost World, 3D World, Rayman Legends “definite version”, Earthbound, Nano Assault, Toki Tori 2, Wind Waker HD and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. I don’t know why you bought WIi U but who buys Wii U settle for these game on first year. Link Slayer You for got Mario 3d World which will be here this year. I’m really regreting my selling my Wii U I want to play Windwaker, Super Mario 3d World, Pikmin 3, Sonic Lost World, and DK Tropical Freeze. Yousif Alromaithi I am Sorry that you sold your Wii U but I said 3D world after Lost World. I hope you can buy another one. Anyways what I meant is that you should wait like most people waited for good PS3 games back on 2006. Keith Chase If you have bought nothing other than Nintendo consoles your are prolly ready for a change, go for it. Or build a PC for games. At the end of the day though you might find you could have just picked up some GCN games and had just as much fun. Leo Not only Nintendo but most of the japanese developers. Sony suffered with the same problem but lucky enough they weren’t on the verge to release a new console. Nintendo definitely suffered the most. Pedro Natera This is why nintendo piss me off mario for life dont nuy there stuff then go waste your money on sony and microsoft then Pedro Natera I do whatever the fuck I want with my money and spell check your comment Squirrel09 Because they get affect by things outside there control like natural disasters… what? Pedro Natera why didn’t they say this shit before, nintendo always on some bullshit Yousif Alromaithi Everybodys on some bullshit not just Nintendo so get over it bro. Mario It’s true that Nintendo wasn’t the only one affected by the earthquake. Nobody, not even Nintendo, can control these kind of disasters. Yousif Alromaithi That’s the truth. We don’t know what god can do now or later. Natural disasters is an act of god not people. Mario True that. The Clockwork Being Yes they left Luck to heaven and hope everything would go well. Mario You mean “skyworld“ Pit? Truthteller Nintendo is the only one with the BS, as well as their fanboys/paid agents. Yousif Alromaithi Good going bro did you get that from a fortune cookie. Keep saying that in the end you will know you are wrong. Have a nice day from your boring trolls. Mochlum I like how you call us all paid agents. So I get paid for my opinion! Yay, free money for me! Now I can buy the tons of Wii U games coming out this holiday season. The Clockwork Being Paid agents. Well you are’t hiding your identity Ignoranceiswhatsup. Do you think the wining console of the last gen, the Wii is a repackaged gamecube Ducked I agree that they should have mentioned this way before, but Nintendo has a lot less bs going on then Microsoft and Sony do. Squirrel09 It’s bad business to publicize company problems before they get resolved. If they announced back in 2012 that the wii u would have no games for the first three quarters if 2014 investors would have left and in return their funds would be much lower. Not saying that Nintendo did everything right, but I can’t blame them for what they did. Daniel Gonzalez They should’ve said it sooner, otherwise, they should’ve just kept it to themselves. People don’t wanna hear about the past, they wanna know about right now, and the future. Michael DeVore From the Business perspective you’d have to be stupid not to know this already. Japanese game development literally stopped for 6 months accost the board. The Taiwan floods jacked up hardware prices accost the board. All common knowledge for investors, and is why investors weren’t shocked when Nintendo posted their first loss in over 30 years. Further more, this information isn’t coming out in a Gaming magazine so YOU and ME aren’t who it was intended for. It’s coming out in a magazine called SAPIO which is more like Forbes then anything else. It’s mostly a Japanese feel good article about how that Massive Tsunami wrecked with one of their beloved institutions, and what that Institution has done to respond to the disaster. Yousif Alromaithi They did charity. So what can they do leave poor people who lost homes live in streets. I myself paid 500 dollars for people who lost homes through online transactions. They are my brothers and sisters so I had to help the people in need. Pedro Natera I don’t need a history lesson from you, nintendo sucks ass, they full of crap always delaying everything, this console is not even fun anymore david jarman Wow, you’re heartless. So many people lost their lives. Probably people they know. Some of the developers could have lost friends and family members. THOUSANDS of lives and all you care about is being served. Michael DeVore You’re clearly in need of a history lesson, and need to learn to garner context from articles before you start on your aimless rants. The Clockwork Being *Sigh* Do you have to be told everything? Steven_Segal it’s ironic that you Monolith Soft’s X picture! AAAkabob I feel like they are gonna call those 6 games we got for 30 cents ea (and the 10% rebate) our ambassador program…which I am ok w/ Also, where is the 3DS news!!! Mr. J So that’s why the wii u had a lackluster launch lineup. Before you start down voting me because there was some good games. Like ac3, blops2, and others they were already out on other consoles so they didn’t really matter to most people. Yousif Alromaithi You are right WIi U had great games but not enough to surge owners from PS3, Xbox 360 or the 3DS to buy it. I mean not yet but it would happen soon. Zombie Boy I agree. But those games are coming now, and we’ve already seen a sales rise in both Japan and the UK because of Pikmin 3 (I’m not sure about the US?). Steven_Segal Time will tell! DragonSilths Pikmin 3 isnt out yet in North America. This Sunday it is. Zombie Boy Hopefully it will have the same effect there then 🙂 Dez Probably because the U.S. doesn’t have it yet. We get it August 4th, it is July 29th, currently. Zombie Boy It is indeed the 29th. I forgot that you guys in the US get it after us (I’m in the UK). Jack5221 Well its not just that… I remember reading some interviews with Nintendo devs talking about how they underestimated the time it takes to make HD games as opposed to SD, after all, this is Nintendo’s first HD console. Ducked So that’s why the 3DS has two screens it was split! Oh wait never mind…. Mario That’s not the reason! Ducked It was a joke! One I just couldn’t resist to make xD RoboticLink Well, what can you do? Move on Nintedward Well , R.I.P to the victims and its unfortunate , but move on now 🙂 The Clockwork Being Yep Moving on is the best thing to do. Lets see some positive news. Comments from Nintendo devs. Teasers for the next project that Retro is working on. THe news should be joyful. Truthteller Yeah, people need to move on from the Wii U as that ship has sailed. The Clockwork Being Ignorance go home Zombie Boy Back to groom more children? CaesarGood ‘U’ got shakin up before ‘Wii’ could launch, Damnn… Steven_Segal People: We want a new Nintendo console that is revolutionary Nintendo gives the Wii U People: What?, I wish that Nintendo would have stayed with a standard controller Nintendo gives them the pro Controller People: I didn’t want an Xbox 360 controller, rip off People: We want Earthbound on Wii U virtual console Nintendo puts EarthBound on Virtual Console at $9.99 People: What?, $9.99 is way too much for an old game People: Sailing on Wind Waker took to long Nintendo makes a remake and shorten the sailing time (whatever) People; They ruined it, that was fun! I really don’t understand some people! Edit: I didn’t think my comment would become a threat (whatever). Everybody is shooting comments LOL. REHASH REHASH REHASH REHASH REHASH… Edit #2: REHASH: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Brandon Gardner Too much complaining Steven_Segal Yup. Yousif Alromaithi I said to Brandon Gardner . That Nintendo is not wrong fans are Wrong. Fans want Kid Icraus for a long time they brought the game to 3DS did it sell no. Fans want F-Zero did it sell no. Fans want Star Fox did it sell on DS no. Fans want new IP did it sell no. Who is wrong now. Brandon Gardner Nintendo is just as wrong as fans…. All these excuses about why the system isn’t selling, we didn’t know how to HD graphics… etc etc etc… Rehash game such as Super Mario 3d World, and Donkey games look just like the 3ds games nothing new… The dungeon from Windwaker that wasn’t added on the Gamecube version will still not be on the Wii u… The list goes on and on… Nintendo has a lot to prove Yousif Alromaithi Nintendo knows Mario well sell let me give you a good explanation. Do you know New Super Mario 2 3DS. The game is basically the same thing. But the game turned out to be one of the top selling games on 3DS. Super Mario 3D World will sell well because everybody likes Mario. The game will no doubt sell and become the top selling Wii U game 2013. I have no doubt you will buy it by the end of the year. If you sold your Wii U you will also buy it when you buy your second Wii U. The Clockwork Being True when people buy Nintendo consoles they get a sort of package. They buy the console for things like this during the Wii U lifetime 1-2 Mario game 1 Zelda game Metroid game Smash Bros etc You know the games that are the main reason people buy Nintendo consoles. They make Mario games because people want more Mario. People love that Mario game. It isn’t because Mario is all they got. Yousif Alromaithi Good comments unlike brandon. I agree that’s what people buy Nintendo products. Brandon Gardner Nobody is complaining… I am just stating the facts… Yes Mario is why people by a Nintendo console but what’s wrong with having and wanting more your system… You are missing the whole point at least I can be honest that Nintendo has fucked up and defend them when I know they are doing right. Yousif Alromaithi Listen bro do whatever you want with you Wii U okay I give you my opinion. Listen if you wanna just sell. Don’t tell me Nintendo is wrong more than PS3 was wrong at 2006. In the end of the year you will find I am right I said the earthquake affected look what happened it did. So stop giving excuses and I will do the same. Steven_Segal I don’t know why people complain so much. I mean Wii had 2 Metroid games (well, kind of) and Mario is just awesome. Rehash this rehash that, if people want to talk about that let’s see the other companies. When you see the list of all time greats the majority are Nintendo games. That’s why I am a fan of Nintendo Bob Wilkerson Why some people think that all Nintendo does is rehash their games is beyond me. All game companies make sequel after sequel with their games . How many Call of Duties have their been? Or Halo’s or other popular games. Nintendo just uses their characters in more game types than other brands I suppose. Jon Don’t forget about the Famous BF3 vs BF4, the exact same game as the previous, just new maps and and guns. Everything else the same, graphics, gameplay. same box art style, even the min specs to play the game are the same. Steven_Segal LOL, I love when BATTLEFIELD nerds say COD is the same. I just laugh… when I go to a COD video it’s for entertainment of these fanboys. greengecko007 Obviously somebody who doesn’t understand that new map and field layouts as well as new weapons and vehicles equals different gameplay. You don’t fly a jet the same way you drive a tank, and you don’t shoot a pistol the same way you fire a sniper rifle. Relias And obviously some people don’t understand new levels.. and that frog suits and Raccoon tails along with riding Yoshi and various changes to the mechanics of the game makes for different gameplay.. You don’t climb a pole in a cat suit, throw a vegetable, and swim in a frog suit the same way you use your fire flowers and pow blocks.. (And there is more.. a lot more.. but these are all the examples I can think of right now.. ) Just saying.. greengecko007 The term “rehash” is overused, plain and simple. If you don’t like a series, be it Mario or Battlefield, that’s fine. But you can’t expect a game to completely change it’s premise just because you personally don’t like it. While we’re talking about Super Mario 3D world, the only thing I don’t like about it is that the level designs look boring. The new content is cool, especially being able to reveal hidden objects via the gamepad. But I can’t help but feel it just doesn’t look as inspired as Super Mario Sunshine or Galaxy. Steven_Segal Could not agree more! The Clockwork Being Oh please those people are so ignorant. Most of them sound like this: OMG Nintendo keeps rehashing the same games. Why are you giving me Super Mario Galaxy, it plays exactly like Super Mario Bros 2 and ive played that game back on the SNES. Nintendo come on what are you doing stop rehashing Zelda and Mario. People should learn what a game being rehashed or overused means. Mario Kart vs COD which one is overused. One Mario Kart per console and cod is 5 per console. Mario isn’t rehashed. The gameplay changes oftenly tell me that Legend of Zelda 2 Plays like a Link to the Past or even Wind Waker, how about Spirit Tracks I mean they are all rehashes right? No. As long as gameplay changes than it is not a rehash Andreas Sunde 5 CoD? More like eight. Nine if you count CoD 2 on the 360. Steven_Segal I’ll give you a list: Call of Duty (PC) Call of Duty 2 (360) Call of Duty Finest Hour Call of Duty 2 Big Red One Call of Duty ROad to Victory (PSP) Call of Duty 3 Call of Duty World at War Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Call of Duty Black Ops Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Call of Duty Black ops 2 Call of duty Modern Warfare 3 Call Of Duty Ghosts Call of Duty for DS Andreas Sunde Was limiting myself to one system. If you’re going with everything, don’t forget Black Ops: Declassified. And wasn’t there like a bajillion spinoffs of CoD 1&2? Steven_Segal Ohhh… anyway there are a bunch. WolfgangAmadeusMozart Mario Kart: One game per console Call of Duty: Nine games in ONE generation ———————– Mario Party: 13 games in 15 years, for a game per year ratio of 0,867 Call of Duty: 12 games in 10 years, for a game per year ratio of 1,2 Conclusion: Based on the Nintendo hater’s logic, even Mario Party is not as “milked” or “rehashed” as Call of Duty Yousif Alromaithi You are wrong sir. Mario Party started 1998 and call of duty started when at 2003. Let us say that Mario Party 1998 and now the new on 3DS will be at 2013. 13 games in 15 years. 16 call of duty games games including the PS Vita on 13 years. So basically you are wrong dude again. Sorry I followed you because you basically hate Nintendo. One more question if you want Kid Icarus on Wii U have you bought 3DS game. If you answer that you are man. WolfgangAmadeusMozart I didn’t know about that Mario Party game on 3DS, so I corrected the numbers accordingly. With the number of Call of Duty games, I exclude all ports, remakes, spin-offs, expansions, and alternate versions of the same game, I forgot the one for the Vita and another one for the PSP, so I added them as well. What part of my comment even remotely suggests I hate Nintendo, because I really don’t. I don’t own a 3DS Yousif Alromaithi Then why you want a new Kid Icarus if you don’t support it. Question is why are you here to troll, I mean to make fun of us. You came here to make fun at Nintendo fan I know most did. You think this is funny what you are doing does it amuse you. You know Asada garbage no 3DS in stores and they sell Vita while 3DS sits top selling. Good job Sony fans. Listen here is the truth, guys like truth teller and whatsoever that trolled here are boring. No life and no girlfriend. Don’t follow that path you are better than this. That’s the ugly truth. WolfgangAmadeusMozart I think you are over overreacting, don’t be so paranoid, I wouldn’t even hurt a fly’s feelings. I currently have posted 37 comments on this site, received 175 upvotes and have almost no downvotes, people do seem to like my comments (I don’t mean to brag in any way, I’m just trying to make a point). And going as far as comparing me to Truthteller (aka Knowledgeishatsup) and suggesting I have no life, you seem like a troll to me (sarcasm). I never said I wanted a new Kid Icarus, but fans who wanted one finally have it, which is a good thing. Those who wanted this game are buying it, the 1,2 million sales reflects that. Remember, Kid Icarus is no Zelda or Mario, but the sales are ok considering the popularity of the franchise. Metroid has never been a big seller either, most of the games in the series sold only like one or two million IN THEIR LIFETIME and yet, the series is still alive, suggesting it is actually profitable for Nintendo. Fire Emblem games sell even less, with many of them (such as Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn and Shadow Dragon) selling less than a million and yet Nintendo still made Awakening (which turned out to be the best selling game in the series). Bottom line, Uprising is doing alright. What did you expect ? 10 million copies in a year ? Yousif Alromaithi Listen Nintendo appealed to fans about Fire Emblem and it sold so a lot people bought it. I don’t care how many up votes or down votes you have since I never asked you those questions. I only down vote a troll and when I am on discussion with someone I don’t down vote him and he does the same. If I agree with him, I up vote him because I like his idea. In the first place I hated your ideas and second you don’t own a Nintendo so thirdly you don’t know nothing about Nintendo. I did not down vote you. Agreed on Fire Emblem and Nintendo appealed to gamer’s the same way as Kid Icarus and it became top selling game on the franchise. Kid Icarus nes came only to the west and sold over two million. The game was released as 3D classics and even to the Wii U meaning the virtual console game sold very well. What I am saying is new comers are wasting time like you, meaning I want this and that but truly they don’t know what they want. I am sorry, If you want to be a fan you must understand who are you dealing with, I mean who bought the first classics even before the PS3 and Xbox 360 did. Nintendo off course on Virtual Consoles at 2006. PS3 came out on 2008 and Xbox 360 started to offer the the same service at 2008. Nintendo online games offered before PS3. On Wii and DS. Nintendo is trying to move from the shadows of the WIi and 3DS. We once hated the Wii we grew to love it. This happened when they started delivering the greatest games of all time on Virtual consoles and retails. People hates Wii U now but will grow to love it. You should do the same. The Clockwork Being C.O.D troll: Well Mario Kart keeps rehashing anyways. I mean you always have to race in that game. DragonSilths Actually theres 2 Zeldas on each home console. Ocarina and Majora’s on N64. Windwaker and Twilight on Gamecube, Twilight again and Skyward Sword on Wii. Now Windwaker HD and the new Zelda HD Wii U game. The Clockwork Being Oh yeah true. Yousif Alromaithi What I am trying to say bro. Nintendo worked on Metroid Prime Gamecube and become one of the highest rated games ever. Did anybody care I mean did it sold like Mario, no it did not. So why Nintendo has to focus on Metroid while no one cares. Steven_Segal Well, that’s your opinion… Jon FYI, the donkey Kong game came out on Wii before the remade it on the 3DS. That tells me how much you know about Nintendo’s home consoles. Also. if you know what Mario games are played for, it is the levels and the creativity in the levels. Those who play Mario for the story are retarded. Steven_Segal SPOILER about Super Mario 3D World: Princess Peach is kidna…. Oh wait…! disqus_sgtob6da3X Now. I very excited for 3D world. But you might as well say SMG 3 or SMS 2 is a rash of it the other series. What about SMBU? that was a another rehased game from the Wii version and it still sells well. I think 3d World will do fine as many are excited for the game. Some just didn’t want it to come out now. Linksawakeningisazeldagame “The dungeon from Windwaker that wasn’t added on the Gamecube version will still not be on the Wii u” Nintendo has already stated that they used those dungeons in other games… Fragle 1. Just because it didn’t sell well on the DS doesn’t mean anything. It’s sold well on the other NIntendo consoles. 2. Kid Icarus sold well actually. Was it a mega smash hit? Ofc not but it did do well. Enough to make a profit again. 3. Wii Fit, Wii sports, Wii Play, Dillion’s Rolling West, Pikmin, etc all sold very well. 4 of these games are newer IP’s from Nintendo while the last one is an IP that came about in the Gamecube’s life (it’s was NEW) and sold well as well. Can the fans be wrong? Ofc. Are we wrong this time? No. Yousif Alromaithi Listen bro. You gotta Nintendo fans are wrong as much as Nintendo but fans never care about Nintendo new IP’s . If Nintendo makes Star Fox WIi U you bet the fans ass to buy those games. Not just ditch and say Nintendo is stupid while we are right and that’s ignorance so you gotta agree that they are not wrong. Kid Icarus sold well agreed but not enough to make a sequel because Nintendo pleased the fans with a promotion did they obey, no they did not. Then Nintendo priced cut the game at 19.99. The game took a long time to develop two years and got good reviews. So did people buy the game, no they did not. World wide sales from March to May sold only 0.7 million. Then it managed to sell 0.39 million at price cut. Nintendo lost a great deal of money for Kid Icarus. F-Zero GX Gamecube sold 0.65. Oh really 0.65 with graphics well beyond it’s time. Oh really enough to make profit. Say that while looking at a mirror. Because you know it is not not the truth. The game received critical acclaim and sold that much oh really you believe that, good job for believing it. While Mario never receives critical acclaim and sells. Oh really because you gotta agree Mario sells and fans want Mario. If you buy Nintendo you settle for this first party games and that’s about it. reyn69sharla mario never gets critical acclaim? considerring 3 of the top 5 games of all time are mario games, id say you are terribly wrong. but maybe i cant understand your poorly structured rant. Yousif Alromaithi I said New Super Mario 2 3DS outsold Kid Icarus end of discussion. Who is right now bro. WolfgangAmadeusMozart “Fans want Kid Icraus for a long time they brought the game to 3DS did it sell no.” Well, Kid Icarus did sell 1,2 million copies in a year, which is almost half of what Ocarina of Time 3D sold in the same period of time. It could be better, but the sales are far from bad. Yousif Alromaithi Ocarina sold over 3 million so how do you compare kid Icarus which is not even half the sales. Correction the game sold 1.18 million on sales. With the price cut at 19.99. So how is wrong now, Nintendo, no, just say that in the mirror that Nintendo is wrong and believe that. Because you basically cannot believe that. It is not ignorance it is logic. greengecko007 1. People want some degree of innovation, but a new controller that costs $140 adds a significant amount of extra money to the console overall. I think the gamepad is cool, but just think about how much cheaper the Wii U would have been with just a pro Controller and the Gamepad sold separately. 2. People are still going on about this? Yes, $9.99 is expensive for an SNES game epsecially when other SNES games are cheaper. You can get a PS1 game on Playstation for that price or less. 3. Some people think that sailing took to long on the Wind Waker. But a lot of people are complaining about WWHD because faster sailing is not enough to make them want to pay $50 for basically the same game. You may not understand some people’s concerns because you over generalize them. Steven_Segal 1. Do you think the Gamepad would sold separetly? 2.Expensive when the cartridge only sells for 130+? 3.I don’t have that problem since I did not play the original greengecko007 1. The gamepad itself would probably have a hard time selling. But I think a $230 Wii U without the gamepad would sell better than the Wii U currently is, especially with anticipated games coming out this fall. 2. How much a third party source sells their product for on Ebay is irrelevant. The original cartridge is rare so some collectors are willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money for it. An online video game download is not rare. Compared to other games priced by the first party retailer, being Nintendo, the game is more expensive than its same platform counterparts. The virtual console games are already expensive compared to other online retailers like the PSN store or Xbox Store. 3. You may not have that problem, but it doesn’t take much effort to see how others do have a problem with the lack of changes. Not trying to be a smartass, but I think it would help if you could see the point of view of many other people without chastising them by overgeneralizing their concerns. We all have different opinions. Jon a Wii U with no gamepad would be nothing to the console. A wii U without the game pad would be a Wii U no one would buy because what is there that is new to playing a game. I for one probably would still be sitting on the fence to buy a Wii u or not if there was no gamepad because it would just be a Wii that can handle better graphics. Now, as for the cartridges on Ebay, yes, I am glad Nintendo gives us these games for the price they do because honestly. There are so many games that I want that I cannot justify paying an arm and a leg just to get. I have been trying to get a collection of SNES games and with the megaman games all $5 on the VC, I am really happy because if i was to get all of them off of ebay, I’d be spending $250-$300 just for the 6 of them, now I can get all 6 for $30 and enjoy them just the same if not more because I didn’t have to dig so deep into my pockets just to enjoy them. Fragle Why does every Nintendo fan think you need console gimmicks to be creative & create new things? You don’t need gimmicks to make new things. Look at Sony! Constantly making new IP’s that are successful, creative & original and don’t rely on console gimmicks. The fact that Nintendo and many other devs don’t know how to incorporate the Gamepad into their games is sad. The only dev who does it well is Platnium. The fact that the Gamepad has NFC and it hasn’t been used by nintendo or devs and is usually a forgotten features is sad. If Nintendo showed off a console with a regular control (that was up to date with today’s standards), good graphics (close to the PS4/Xbone) and NEW IP’s or existing IP’s that had many new original ideas and was creative, I would certainly jump onto the Wii U in an instant. The only good gimmick that could be revolutionary is the Oculus Rift. The Gamepad isn’t anything new. InsaneZucchini Occulus Rift is not revolutionary or even new, it’s been done before. By Nintendo. 18 years ago. It was called the Virtual Boy. It may be done better with Oculus Rift, but you can’t argue Oculus Rift is a better “gimick” than the gamepad just because it “isn’t anything new”. As for the NFC feature, the system has been out for a little over half a year. No system ever uses every potential feature to it’s fullest in the first year. However Pokemon Rumble U takes advantage of the NFC tech and it’s already been released in Japan, it is also being released to North America and Europe next month, so that argument is weak. How can you argue that Platinum is the only developer that knows how to use the gamepad in their games when they haven’t even released their games yet. There have been less than 60 games released for the system to date, even fewer when you bring up exclusives, and the system will have hundreds released before the end of it’s lifetime. You’re counting your rotten eggs before they’re even laid, let alone hatched. david jarman First of all the console is still new and a lot of developers are excited about the gamepad and what it can add to gameplay. New ips are fun, but most of them have similar play mechanics and you can only do so much in a game due to the way you interface with it. You think the controller you use right now has always been that way? People said the same thing everytime more buttons were added and then anolog sticks were added. Zombiu may not be the best looking game but it made great use of the game. I felt more a part of the game because of it. Rayman makes good use of it, pikmin makes good use of it and the wii remote combined, black ops 2 is awesome on it especially cause you don’t have to split screen, lego city made great use of it, Game and wario had some really cool games. ubisoft said that blacklist feels like it was meant for the wii u cause of the gamepad. Letting other peopl watch tv and being able to still play is awesome and convenient, using the gamepad as a remote is cool. Plus, my tvii functions are great. greengecko007 I disagree. Nintendo fans would buy the Wii U regardless of whether or not the gamepad was included. Nintendo fans want to play Mario, Zelda, and all the other great IPs from Nintendo. The Wii U now has Miiverse, which is a dedicated online network for the system, rather than having friend codes for each game like the Wii. The Wii U is able to accept patches and updates for both software and hardware, as apposed to the Wii just being able to receive hardware updates, obvious HD graphics upgrade, and other things I’m probably forgetting. The gamepad isn’t the only new thing for the Wii U, and I really think that even though it’s cool, the cost efficiency of it is holding the console back. Andreas Sunde What Nintendo (and even microsoft) understands, but Sony doesn’t, is that if you can’t guarantee that every owner of your system has a certain peripheral, hardly anyone will make games for it, and 90% of what is made is shovelware. greengecko007 How do you explain the massive amount of shovelware on the Wii then? Most of the great AAA first party games for the original Wii barely even used motion controls. The only one I can think of that really utilized the motion controls was Skyward Sword. david jarman Don’t forget no more heroes 1and 2, red steel 2, black ops 1 and Cod: modern warfare, the conduit 1 & 2, pikmin, super mario galaxy 1 and 2, metroid prime 3, metroid trilogy and punch out. greengecko007 None of those games had a deeper experience because of motion controls. Pointing and clicking to shoot on CoD does not enhance the experience. Pointing and clicking to throw Pikmin does not enhance the experience. Skyward Sword’s 1:1 motion controls enhanced the experienced. When I turn my wrist, Link turns his wrist. His arm follows mine exactly. This is what motion gaming was supposed to be. Not just pointing at something and clicking a button for a command, like pretty much every Wii game. david jarman That’s just your opinion, but there are a lot of players who love using the wii remote because it is fun and does deepen the experience as a oppose to just using your thumbs to move a reticle(cause that’s a deeper experience) especially in call of duty games. Red steel 2 you can move and twist the gun just like link with the sword. Metroid prime you had to flick your wrist like you as if you were casting to use you’re grappling hook. No matter what you say, these games were all fun with the motion controls. Skyward sword may have been a deeper experience, but each of those games I mention would not have been as fun as they are if it weren’t for the motion controls in them. I’m willing to bet you only played 3 of the games I mentioned. Tobias Naustdal i have always thought the sailing in wind waker set the atmosphere for the game and made it somehow feel bigger 😛 let’s say you were watching jaws, and you did not like the build up, it was long and boring. then steven spielberg goes into the movie and adds a lot more scenes were people get eaten. just because you thought the movie had a to slow of a build up… i think they should have left it as it is… Steven_Segal but then why so many people complain. This is from what I’ve seen Tobias Naustdal people have different opinions you know Steven_Segal Exactly, and I respect that. Guest people have different opinions you know 😛 bizzy gie It’s funny because MS riped off the Gamecube controller’s letters, colors, and stick/button layout and nobody had anything to say. Yet Nintendo improves the Classic Controller Pro for Wii design that COINCIDENTALLY has the same shape as the 360 controller and Nintendo copied. Nintendo haters don’t know why they hate Nintendo. Marcell Wade You can never make everyone happy, people ask for something and get it, but theirs still something to complain about. Steven_Segal Yeah, agree especially in the gaming community only god can judge me While I have great remorse from those victims effected by the earthquake I have no care for it from a business standpoint. This news only adds insult to injury. We already know the Wii u got off to a slow start so why not focus on future updates and games that matter the most I’m only interested in how they are going to turn things around as I continue to support my wii u. Yousif Alromaithi Well said bro. I may not agree with you but you said something from a good standpoint. Well done as a Wii U owner. only god can judge me Thanks guy I’m just tired of hearing all the past negativity surrounding the console and just instead focus on now and the future their best games has yet to come out. The Clockwork Being That seems fair enough of a statement. The news from Nintendo shouldn’t be like this but they should announce the 2014 unannounced games Truthteller They are making excuses for failure instead of just admitting what THEY did wrong. Zombie Boy So what’s your excuse? Truthteller Man, they have more excuses then people going to jail. They still managed to get the Wii U out and no one else in Japan seemed to have bee affected… Jon LOL, no one else was affected….. you need to take a look at the new back from that time when that earthquake hit. Truthteller Toyotas still rolled out on time, Sony still does it’s thing, only poor old Nintendo complains and makes excuses. Jon that does not mean they were all not affected, actually They were all affected, after that earthquake when the stocks in the East Asian market had a crash. Jon ok, so here is how I know you are an idiot. Everyone was affected. The stock market had a crash after that so everyone was affected and plus, if you look at the actual article, you’d see he is talking about the development of games and that they had to divert attention to the 3DS to regain the momentum which is probably why the 3DS has a lot coming for it. Now they have moved back to the Wii U. Truthteller Man you people are so predictable. It is like not expecting a politicians to lie whenever they open their mouths. Mochlum I like how the only argument you ever have is “You always use that argument” or “You are so predictable”, then just say something dumb without any sources or evidence. Proves that you really just have no life and hate Nintendo… (And also, one of my friend’s siblings was a victim of the tsunami. So I kinda know what the effects of the earthquake were.) The Clockwork Being You too Ignoranceiswhatsup. You are predictible. You troll, get banned, you make a new account. You troll get banned, make a new account and try to troll again. Pretty predictable if you ask me. Steven_Segal PROPAGANDA! The Clockwork Being Well I am paid. david jarman If anything is rehashed its him. NkoSekirei how about stfu troll and by the way over 20000 people died in japan from that earthquake so wat u say is filled with crap and ignorance Truthteller By the way, playing the sympathy card for something unrelated to Nintendo is in poor taste. Steven_Segal DO NOT FEED THE TROLL boynhisblobs Did toyotas still roll out on time? Do you work for toyota? I’m sure if you look into it, all japanese businesses were affected. In video game development, this comes a few years down the line since it takes 2 years + to make an HD game. david jarman Toyota and Sony have operations outside of Japan. Sony and Toyota were both affected by the disaster, but they have ready had their shit out on the market before the disaster hit. Nintendo just launched a hand held and were in the middle of development for the wii u. Did it ever occurred to you that maybe they might have been effected personally? Did ever occurred to you that maybe they lost friends and family members? Despite all this nintendo manages to make a come back with the 3ds and crap all over Sony and Toyota sales. Truthteller Man you guys get personal to the point that we would think that you work for Nintendo and know some of these people. Maybe that is why you respond with such hate at any comment that is no pro-Nintendo. david jarman I would love to work for nintendo! But I don’t. Plus, nothing I said to you was out of hate. Sorry if I’m being logical, but you’re pretty heartless. I don’t debate everybody, just those that show pro ignorance. The Clockwork Being Ignoranceiswhatsup please get the fuck out Ony I’ve seen a similar article on another site, but it was like “Nintendo said it’s the earthquake’s fault booooo :'( ” I better understand now, thx Ashley :3 JBeauregard So, what you’re saying is that you released your console before you should have? Hey, I was pissed for a while at Nintendo for lack of games and slow development times, but I’m back on board now! Now, Nintendo, get your a– moving! Pikboss excuses excuses Madmagican There’s point lingering in the past when you can do something about the future david jarman I just love the lack of compassion and understanding. This was an enormous event that occurred where so many people lost their lives, love ones and homes. And from what I’m seeing in the comments are people saying excuses, excuses!?!? This event affected them big time and some of you are just saying move on. Fucking pathetic! And as fars as the cost of a retro game goes I’ll gladly pay cause at least they do what they can to keep their employees employed. greengecko007 It was years ago. Do you really expect us to continue to grovel over the unfortunate deaths of victims of the earthquake and tsunami on an article that isn’t even about that? This article is about how it affected the development process of the Wii U. It is better to move on then dwell on the past, and that’s a fact, as people that are depressed or have high anxiety, stress, etc. die younger. david jarman I’m referring the people who are yelling that its an excuse and being heartless. This was an honest answer. They’re not dwelling in the past. The disaster occurred right when the launch happened and they had to pull resources from the wii u. It’s still heartless for people to say get over it after someone lost a love one. If you wife died and its been 2 yrs and you just finally recovered from it and someone asked you what the reason for the hold up on a product that you were suppose to have launched during the time your wife died and you explained and then they said get over it…would you feel that was respectful? They have moved, but doesn’t mean you have to be disrespectful. greengecko007 Because it is an excuse. Nowhere in his quote does he say, we had to stop development to mourn for our loved ones. In fact, his response is purely about business. He states that they lost momentum because of the earthquake, and also couldn’t afford to spare developers because of the 3DS being a focus in 2011. If you want more information, here is where Nintendo released a statement saying they appreciate the concern of their fans, but they are fine, nobody is injured, and their headquarters was not damaged. http://nintendo3dsblog.com/nintendo-remains-injury-free-after-earthquake-in-japan-business-will-continue-as-usual/ The disrespect you mention isn’t there. Yes, it is a tragedy that things like this happen, and that people die in an untimely way, but that’s not what the article is about. david jarman Nevermind you’re not getting what I’m trying to say. I’m not talking about the article. Im talking about the heartless comments people are saying on this thread. The disrespect is the yes, yes it was tragic, but where are our games? Instead of just being understanding. Tails the Foxhound Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast of the US pretty hard right around the Wii U’s launch too. Nintendo’s pretty unlucky lately. Fragle Doesn’t matter. They still shouldn’t have released it. Nintendo you knew you weren’t ready. Whatever. That’s what you get for thinking casuals and gamers will flock to the Wii U like they did with the Wii. Johny well i hope theres actually some truth to that, that that that really IS partially a reason for wii u’s current slow “start” … Dez There was no single reason for the stalling people. This might be relatively new information and when you think about it, it is logical. Japan got struck hard back then and it really kind of killed Japan’s dabbling in PC gaming for one, and with the struggling 3DS trying to make it profitable is obviously the priority at the time. Wii U had been in development since 2010, I believe. So software development did get kind of rocked due to the 3DS’s struggles and the crisis with Japan. Another issue as Miyamoto has pointed out several times is related to going from SD to HD. Particularly, he said they were having troubles with the shaders in HD games. However, it seems they’ve pretty much worked that out. Difficulty with how to market the Wii U has also been a trouble. On top of that, every new console has kinks that need to be worked out. So add that all up and it really isn’t surprising the Wii U has had such a hard time. Brian Lockett Wii U should’ve had games in development before 2011, though…. Linskarmo Oddly, I never thought about how that earthquake could affect them. It was quite a terrible occurrence. I hope the Wii U gains momentum regardless of whether this is true or not. C.S. Bailey That earthquake hit a lot of companies hard. I do remember Nintendo as being one of the few to not rush out and blame delays on the earthquake. For more than a few companies, the first thing they said was that they were slashing forecasts. Lewis Te Whaiti Their Business model is fundamentally flawed and I think that after the popularity explosion on the Wii the execs at Nintendo took too many things for granted hoping that lightning would strike twice. In the cold light of day people simply aren’t ready to part with their hard earned cash for what is effectively outdated hardware. The AMD triple core HD4xxx resistive touch screen controller is simply an insult to too many gamers who now have too many options to choose from. Even with their hugely popular library to select from I already hear the death knock for this system, with support beginning to dwindle at the retail level Nintendohave dug a huge hole for themselves can they recover? I dont know but I would suggest wer’e not far from seeing a desperate Nintendo doing what ever it takes to reignite interest in the Wii U. Guest Amazing, this day and age lets blame someone else, and event, or situation that shifts the spotlight off of them. I have to say I really like the Wii U, but don’t pass the buck or QQ for being understaffed. Of the 2011 Earthquake event that did affect a great amount on industry and individuals why not take additional time and get it right prior to rushing/keeping the hardline release date. Seriously, look how they are treating some of the 1st party games release dates. If they have issue allowing pushback dates on those titles why not for the system. Oh, but wait we (Nintendo) are having slight setbacks on games, due to issues in programming for HD quality games. As someone here mentioned “Where has Nintendo been for the last several year, HD has been around long enough and they should have seen this event on the horizon”. Just wish more upstanding rather than finger pointing and not our fault comment card(s) being played, but now the blame game and not my fault for poor performance is the norm. Brian Lockett No offense, but Nintendo shouldn’t release these statements explaining for the Wii U’s lack of success so much. Regardless of whether they’re legit or not, they quickly begin to look like a bunch of excuses and something to draw out sympathy towards their low success with Wii U. Truth is, Nintendo should’ve been ready with Wii U and Wii U games long before 2011. And that’s coming from a long-time Nintendo fan here.
