Wii U Music

In 2009, Guitar Hero and Rock Band were at their height. People were buying $150 boxed sets that included the game and several instruments in order to put mock bands together in their home and play these rhythm games. The genre failed because Activision annualized the series just like it does with Call of Duty, so consumers who spent big bucks on obtaining guitars and drum sets had no need to continue purchasing the large peripheral bundles. By 2011 the music game genre was all but dead, but it looks like Nintendo may be looking to revive it.

In recent patent filings, Nintendo shows a Music Game set up to work with the GamePad and the TV. The patent descriptions are pretty technically related, but it appears that Nintendo could be looking to do something with music as a whole, like they did with Wii Karaoke U in Japan. Here’s a sample of the text from the patent:

Conventionally, there is a game apparatus that outputs the sound of performing one composition as an ensemble using a plurality of instruments. In the game apparatus, a user selects a part to be assigned to the user themselves. When the selection of the assigned part is completed, the ensemble is started. Then, the user can participate in the ensemble by performing an input operation based on the assigned part.

The game apparatus, however, can merely provide the audio output of the composition performed as an ensemble from, for example, a pair of loudspeakers provided in a monitor. Thus, even a composition performed as an ensemble may lack variety, as compared to other types of sound outputs.

Therefore, it is an object of an exemplary embodiment to provide a storage medium having stored therein an information processing program capable of a wide variety of sound outputs, and an information processing apparatus, an information processing system, and an information processing method that are capable of a wide variety of sound outputs.

The user performing an input operation based on the assigned part makes it sound as though Nintendo is creating a band-like environment game on the Wii U, were users can play specific instruments in order to create music. Here’s a look at some of the images filed with the patents.

What do you think could come from this?

  • Jon Turner

This had better not be another Wii Music.

    • Derek

Who ever came up with the idea of making Wii music 2 is blind to what fans want.

      • bob

Next project they are working on is a sequel to the et from atari. They plan to keep the same mechanics with hd graphics.

    • Daniel Carvalho

Please, Nintendo, we’ve seen how bad Wii Music was! DON’T DO IT AGAIN!

      • Sam

It wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t that good either.

    • MetroidZero

    • “Sean” jjbredesen

Oh god, no! My sarcastic prediction is coming true!

      • Peter Lythaby

See mate they do listen 😉

        • “Sean” jjbredesen

As the former drunken head of Nintendo PR, i can confirm that they listen 😛

    • Mr. J

WHY?!?!?!! Don’t do this to me Ninty….

    • NatT96™

Well yeah you characterized the event better. Despite it looking a bit different.

      • And people seriously complain that Nintendo isn’t doing live presentations at E3 any more.

        • NatT96™

          Yep, although…

  • That guy who hates Spike

Why not Jam with the Band U?
    Elite Beat Agents 2
    Rhythm Heaven U
Or even a new Harmoknight game?
Nope, instead, file patents for Wii Music 2, which is arguably the worst music game in Nintendo’s arsenal.

    • SolarShane13

It’s called greed and it’s about to kick us in the ass once again.

Nintendo wonders why Wii U isn’t selling? It’s just an upgraded Wii, and in some cases, an upgraded 3DS. (see: MK8 without antigravity)

      • Willie Crespo

Gee, it’s not like the purpose of a company is to MAKE MONEY! Gasp!

        • Mario

That’s basically the primary purpose of a video game company in general.

          • SolarShane13

I guess these people haven’t heard of sarcasm.

          • Mario

I know that. I’m responding to what he really meant to say.

      • rp17

Like the PS4 and XBone are not just upgraded versions of their respective predecessor. That said, Nintendo is supposed to be the innovative one.

    • The Clockwork Being

    • Shota

      Jam with the Band and
Elite Beat Agents 2 would be awesome

  • Andrew Gonzalez

    No, please

  • SolarShane13

You have GOT to be kidding me!

Why is SOFTWARE even allowed to be patented? The patent system has got to be reformed. 1100101011001.. Ooops I just violated a patent. Did you know that even the “Page Up” button is patented?

  • Paladinrja

Looks like a music composition program like Art Academy is for art. DJ’s will use this.

  • Phoenix Maybe

Instead of patenting some revolutionary technology for a game we care about (Star Fox, Metroid, heck even Rhythm Heaven), the patent another Wii Music. Now instead of waggling a Wiimote, we’ll be smashing our GamePads in an attempt to recreate drums or something.

  • paulthevgking

cause, you know, wii music was amazing

  • BIG Franky

cant you seriously picture Iwata or Reggie “unveiling” a Wii Music U app wherein you can “play piano” on the gamepad as if that is something new and original? as if we hadn’t already grown tired of doing that on our iPads 5 years ago, LOL…. I can just totally see that. sheesh, LOL…. and that would even be without a multi-touch screen! oh boy…

  • Sam

    Wii Music U.

  • Elvis Michael

Someone or something has officially taken over Nintendo’s marketing department. I’m pretty sure it’s a bunch of monkeys.

Let’s say hello to another music game, because apparently it’s 2006 all over again when drums and guitars were all the rage.

  • steveb944

Wii Music Uuuuu. Well at least I still have my closet full of plastic guitars, mics, and a drum set for my PS2 still AND 2 DJ boards? for Wii…. So I won’t be buying into music video games ever again.

  • FutureFox

What is this like a collaborative music game with miis? People can do this on non-console platforms like Apple or probably Google. Why does Nintendo feel the need to do this?

My only guess is its to introduce kids to music and the art of collaborating…maybe.

  • Josiah Parsons

I sure hope not. Wii Music was Laaaaaaaame-O.

  • anthony optimo

Bring Wii U karaoke to the states shooooot.

  • I actually liked Wii Music. A lot more than people should, actually.

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

  • Rinslowe

  • therealruben1

    Still the best rythm game

    • calmwaters

      I’m hoping for

      1) this game to be made, and
      2) this soundtrack will be in this game

  • Logan Wayman

    Seems promising.

  • Scott

    Nintendo plz.
    Y u do dis?

  • Ken Krumbach

People relax it is just a patent it doesn’t mean they are doing anything right away this could be something that will be made made years later or just an idea that may not be used at all. Remember the vitality sensor Nintendo made? That went nowhere after they announced it. Wait until they actually announce a Wii Music game for WiiU before you start bitching about what could be nothing or could be used differently then we think it will.

  • JeanPaul

great, their system is in a bad situation, and they put their resources in this…

  • gamingpalooza

pop’n music would be awesome on the wii u

  • Ryudo9

    NO! NO! NO!

  • C4

Wasn’t bad on DS 🙂 Relaxing. Imagine with 3D environments on Wii U.

  • Mitchell Mckinnon

You cant judge it until you play it guys

  • Nicolas Dorion
