In order to help solve some of the problems that people have been experiencing with connectivity, Nintendo will be taking the Nintendo eShop offline today for maintenance. The announcement was made on the official Nintendo Facebook page and reads as following:

We sincerely apologize for the connection problems in the Nintendo eShop. We understand this is taking longer than expected, but we can assure you that providing a solution is our top priority. We are determined to make sure everyone can enjoy all that Wii U and Nintendo 3DS have to offer. In an effort to manage the high volume of traffic and ultimately improve your experience, we are temporarily taking the Nintendo eShop services offline between the hours of 4 p.m. – 4 a.m. ET. Thank you so much for your continued patience. We will keep you updated.

You’ll be unable to access the Nintendo eShop either on the Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS for nearly 12 hours today as Nintendo works to fix the problem. Let’s hope this round of maintenance relieves the connectivity problems for those that are experiencing them.

“…providing a solution is our top priority.” This is one of the reasons Nintendo is one of the best video game companies in the world because of one singular word– QUALITY.

    • Providing a solution is anyone’s top priority when something breaks. Both Sony and Microsoft respond quickly to issues, let’s not kid ourselves. There’s nothing about this announcement that’s special, other than the fact that it’s coming because there were problems in the first place.

I am sooooo NOT in the mood for fan-boys today, LOL!…

        • Fred

I hate to tell you, but if you’re not in the mood for “fan-boys” you’re in the wrong place.

          • BIG Franky

very true. I love my Wii U, but I am just “over it” with people that think Nintendo can do no wrong…

          • I am Error.

I’m with you. I’ve been a lifelong N fan since 1985 =) But I’m not always thrilled with a lot of their decisions. Still, Super Mario 3D World was one of the most genuinely amazing games I’ve played in years… and that kind of experience is what keeps me a fan.

            Fun read. Thanks.

except when sony got hacked(and cc info got stolen) it took them a month to even admit that. So let us not kid that sony always responds quickly.

Edit : downvoting the truth doesn’t make it less the truth.

        • greengecko007

It took them 2 weeks to confirm that the outage was intentional via hackers, and that personal information could have been compromised.

Additionally, Sony provided up to 1 million dollars worth of identity theft insurance to every user with a stored credit card number. Free games and PS plus services were also given to people that were not even affected.

While it was a serious incident, Sony did everything within their power to fix it, just as Nintendo is doing with their outage.

      • thedeciderU

agreed. anyone selling a product that has a good business model would do the same. nothing special.

    • Magnus Eriksson

      Lol! No.

  • Superbax

I am dying to play my 3ds, but I still haven’t been able to download my new zelda game using the code that came with it.

  • Rugmouse

Does anybody else find it strange that the servers will be down during prime, heavy traffic hours? You’d think that Nintendo would try and resolve the issues during regular business hours (when adults are working) so when everyone is home, they are able to make purchases via the eShop. That might be me being hypercritical though. At least they are transparent and letting us know they are allocating abundant resources to fix the issues.

    • Michael DeVore

Holiday traffic hours tend to be different than traditional traffic. Just imagine how many kids with 3DS units are out of school right now.

      • Rugmouse

True, but these kids likely aren’t of age to make purchases via the eShop. You’d still need an adult to enter the payments.

Although many people just want to play their pack in games, which wouldn’t necessitate credit card information.

        • Fred

90% of the Adults where I work took this ENTIRE WEEK off so they’re all home.

    • Zackary Bruley

Its down during JAP prime time. Think about it.

      • Rugmouse

I’m pretty sure the eShops are region based, much like the consoles. You’d think they would be able to have NoA teams working on implementing the fixes at more appropriate times.

        • BIG Franky

it was confirmed yesterday that they are not region specific servers, so yes…. most of the problems were Japan based so I think they are basing it off of that… there is no down time on the eShop… when we’re sleeping the other half of the planet is ordering! 🙂

    • Christopher Acuna

    • greengecko007

Normally that would be nice and very considerate, but I think, and apparently so does Nintendo, that this maintenance is needed ASAP.

    • Jack5221

Not sure about everyone else, but the Wii U eShop / Miiverse works just fine for me. 3DS eShop is still down though.

  • Seth S. Scott

Glad Nintendo addressed this and this is basically becoming the norm nowadays. New gaming technology is great and very impressive but online services are always going to have problems.

  • Ryebread

i think they did this yesterday since it say it was on maintenance all evening yesterday, and there is no problem with the eshop for me anymore

Edit: No longer working for me, but it told me it was on maintenance yesterday 😛

  • Ducked

Just got on earlier, looks like I won’t be getting on again

  • Fred

I got on this morning before work. Ubisoft has a bunch of games on sale for 30% off. I bought the My Shape game. I rented it from Gamefly a little while ago and I like it better than Wii Fit U. Also Duck Tales Remastered is only $7.50 and Mutant Mudds is $4.99.

  • tronic307

The Wii U must have sold much better than even Nintendo expected.

    • Madmagican

And/or a lot of people got eshop cards for Christmas 😉

    • BIG Franky

I think this has more to do with the 3DS integration and influx of those people than anything else.

  • Marcel Kleine

eShop already works again. Just give Pokemon Bank already >.>

  • Xander

Well that’s good. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

  • Aleks

I bet this big Eshop fiasco results in a sale or a reveal finally of something like SMB3 or LTTP. It would help me forget this holiday failure. Fingers crossed.

  • Aleks

They better fix this REAL GOOD, before we are all trying to play Mario kart online in the spring.

  • I am Error.

I’m always hopeful that the weekly maintenance will result in a thriving Virtual Console section that embraces more systems than two.

  • DashFire

I only wish they chose to do this work tomorrow…
I mean, the pokemon bank came out today in Aus… So I won’t be able to use THAT until 8pm tonight… -.-

  • ShinyLatios

    Pokebank ;_;………….

  • NintenScience

  • zX Excalibur Xz

still can’t do a system update/download my zelda. Congrats Nintendo on having online thats even worse than PSN
