As expected, even though today’s Nintendo Direct was dedicated to the 3DS, there was a bit of information about the Wii U to be had. Satoru Iwata addressed specifically the Spring Update that many of you have been asking for. You’ll be excited to know that it’s coming next week, with a host of new features that should make using the Wii U a bit more streamlined. These features include:

  • Improves loading times
  • Copy data between two USB drives
  • Install software while playing games
  • Automatically receive updates
  • Press B button during start up to go to Wii Menu
  • Continue to download and install after system is OFF
  • Virtual Console will be available next week
  • VC can be played off-tv and each will have its own Miiverse community
  • Gameboy Advance and N64 games will be coming
  • Wii U Panorama View available as free demo next week
  • Each Panorama will be available for $2

Aside from the spring update and the announcement of the Virtual Console being available, Iwata also discussed New Super Luigi U and Pikmin 3. New Super Luigi U will be available as downloadable content and will feature the same world map as New Super Mario Bros. U, but it will be drastically altered to fit Luigi’s play style. All 82 stages have been altered and the game will allow only 100 seconds on the timer to get through the whole level. No release date was announced but it will be available Summer 2013.

Moving on to Pikmin 3, Iwata announced a new flying Pikmin to aid players in getting items across rivers and deep chasms. The game will be launching in just a few months. Edit: Nintendo PR has confirmed that Pikmin 3 will be available August 4th.

So what do you think about these announcements? Let us know in the comments below!

    I love you, Nintendo.

  • eli

    cool! yeah

  • jjmesa14

A few more months for Pikmin!!! 🙁 Originally a launch title, then a title in the launch window, now a title in the launch year. Excited for the update next week with virtual console though.

  • jjmesa14

I’m not sure about each panorama for $2. I’ll be happy with Google Street View for now.

    • Adrian

What is a panorama in this context?

      • jjmesa14

        The Panorama View.

      • Adrian, Panorama View is a new feature Nintendo has announced separate from Google View. It’s like a virtual tour of some of the most famous places in the world. Nintendo is offering these “tours” for $2 a piece.

        • Adrian

          Ahh, ok. Thanks Ashley!

        • uPadWatcher

I’m definitely gonna get Panorama View along with the recorded “tours”. At $2 a pop, it’s truly worth the viewing experience… alongside Wii Street U, of course.

  • AAAkabob

3DS is where it’s at with so freakin many awesome games coming..my wallet has already started begging for mercy lol

this pleases.,.atleast until E3, where they better bring their A game for the Wii U

    • Hec4Mets

E3 is gonna be a full out assault of Wii U I can really tell already because they’ve literally announced everything they could possibly announced for 3DS already so I fully expect E3 to be all about Wii U.

  • Peter Rogers

Wud have been nice to hear some news on a uk launch of tvii but nevermind

    • Hi Peter, living in the US I watched the US Nintendo Direct. My apologies for not covering anything available in the EU version.

      • Haize

It’s not your fault. That Nintendo Direct was a world wide broadcast. There was no separation between regions.

  • Half of the 3DS games I actually can’t wait for, the Link to the Past sequel is the game I can not wait for 😀

  • Rick van der Linde

I see nothing but love for the 3DS everywhere, but when I tried it this one time at a store the 3D just didn’t impress me. Did they change this? Or are there a lot of games that don’t use the 3D feature?

    • Rick, the 3D feature is turned off by a lot of people, myself included. It hurts my eyes to use it for more than a few minutes, but there are some great games that are experienced just as well in 2D.

      • Am I the only one who has no problem with the 3D on the 3DS?

        • Chris, it could be entirely due to my eyesight. I’m certainly not claiming to be the norm, but every person I’ve talked to that owns a 3DS has expressed some level of discomfort for long hours of play, both from friends who wear glasses and those who don’t.

It should be mentioned that those in my age group (25-30) are probably separate from younger or older users. I feel like age should always be taken into consideration when discussing whether or not 3D is viable, as our bodies certainly mature and are affected by different stimuli at entirely different levels according to development.

          • Haize

I’m 26 and I play with the 3D turned all the way up, all the time and it never hurts my eyes. I love the 3D effect and I am constantly mesmerized by its effects.

          • Adrian

In my geology class a few years ago there was a topography map (or something) where if you looked at it through a viewer it was supposed to appear 3D. I was the only person who couldn’t make it appear 3D! Haha, I’ve also never solved a magic eye puzzle either (if you remember those).

        • Fred

No I love the 3D and it doesn’t bother me.

        • Hec4Mets

I have no problem at all with it some games utilize the 3D really well like Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon while others like New Super Mario Bros. 2 don’t really use it well at all.

      • Adrian

I personally don’t think 3D technology is ready at the consumer level for reliable and comfortable 3D experiences on any device.

      • Rick van der Linde

Thank you for a normal reaction. Why would someone downvote a normal question? Ah well, I’ve been playing with the idea of picking up a 3DS. I need a new Mario Kart and I just might, seeing now that the device is more about the games rather than the 3D option.

  • Adrian

    Virtual. Mother. Freakin’. Console!

    • jay

I See what you did there…

  • might pick up a panorama or 2 with my DDP credit

  • Desend

Yeah, this didn’t mention the release of Earthbound on the Wii U VC coming to North America and Europe. I think this was probably the most exciting news on the whole direct. Although overall I was pretty impressed with most of it.

    • Adrian

Hah, they made a separate story for this.

      • Desend

Awesome, I think it is pretty deserving of its own discussion!

  • Pikmin 3 is arriving August 4th

    • Guest

      how do you know?

      • Because Nintendo said so. Look it up.

    • Jeffrey Debris

They said sooner for Europe 😛

      • Hec4Mets

Japan gets it first then America than Europe 😉

  • jcnba28

    • Hec4Mets

      Finally! 😀

  • Tone78

Yes, VC can’t wait. All other updates are good too.

  • Robknoxious1

I’m amazed that Pikmin 3 – originally a launch window game (heck originally supposed to be a Wii game) – is taking so long to come out.

However I really don’t care as I believe that Nintendo is taking the time in order for it to be truly awesome. That has to be the explanation as you know they’re keenly aware of the current need for more quality software titles for Wii U.

  • Super Buu

I was pretty disappointed when Nintendo said that this Nintendo Direct was going to be 3DS exclusive but was underestimating them. They’ve done it again. Bravo Nintendo! Installing software while playing or after the system is off and automatically receive updates are great features and to that I say Good Job Nintendo.

    • does it mean they have full access to your console on or off, or that it just finishes the update before it turns off? I mean the full access thing is a little creepy meaning they can look through your camera and listen to you if the console is on or off which means I will have to unplug the system when im not useing it and no that doesnt make it ok I shouldnt have to do so ty

ps: that also leaves it open to hackers to rub one out while watching you through the cam or when you think your alone and going to work on yourself they can too while watching you or they hear you have herpes they can place it all over the net 🙂

      • david jarman

I believe they said you can finish downing loading even when the console is off.

  • Jimmy D. Fugate

They also announced Game & Wario would be coming to NA on June 23rd.

  • Bob Brochee

I just would like to know how big the update is…

  • dubYA

    I love you more, Nintendo.

  • Bob Brochee
  • RyuNoHadouken

oh Nintendo, a change of leadership and a new direction is sorely needed…

    • Logic

Announcement of features that will improve the console greatly, and an announcement for the release date of a highly anticipated game by Nintendo. YUP! Makes sense, Nintendo you’re doing everything wrong.

      • RyuNoHadouken

for someone who uses the screen name “logic”, you sure dont seem to use any…Nintendo has done nothing but release “who cares” info and software…nothing has been exciting about them all year…or am I the only one who isnt blind to that fact?

        • Logic

          Who cares info?
Pikmin 3 – Highly anticipated game by Nintendo fans. Release date announced.
Wii U – Slow loading menus that almost everyone including me complains about. When this update will come, announced.

Virtual console – Allows you to play games that were made for previous Nintendo consoles. People are excited for this feature coming to the Wii U. When this will be available; announced.
Perform downloads and updates while the console is off, or while you play games – You won’t have to sit there watching a virtual bar fill up for God knows how long.
I don’t know about you, but this info is kind of worth knowing.

        • Zombie_Andrew

X and Lego City Undercover are two frickin awesome games, and for Bayonetta fans Bayonetta 2 is great news, with the possibility of a Metroid game reveal at E3 along with others I’d say they’re on to a pretty good start. But they do need some new IPs

        • david jarman

Apparently you don’t know the difference between your opinion and actual fact. Let me help you out here with an example: Saying that nothing has been exciting about Nintendo is how you feel and that is your judgement of them. This would be an opinion. If it were a fact then everyone would feel the same way as well making it a solid truth. However, 98% feel differently and are very excited about what nintendo has been doing and that is a fact you can’t change or deny. I can see why logic was never your name.

          Have a good day sir.

    • Zombie_Andrew

I agree with you actually. So far I love what Nintendo are giving, But they need a younger leader. Miyamoto is amazing so he can stay on team’tendo, but Iwata just needs to step down and allow some younger newer blood into the company to give a fresh perspective on things. Bring us some new IPs exploring new genre’s that nintendo haven’t tried yet.

  • Ducked

    I can’t wait for a Nintendo 64 Virtual Console!

Give me pokemon fire red and emerald for the wii u and I’ll be more that satisfied!!!

  • GermGerm

I hope the Wii U will inform us when our system is updating so we don’t UNPLUG IT! Or maybe they have fixed that problem 🙂

    • Zombie_Andrew

I’m hoping that too, I’m sure they’ll have a safety procedure while installing

    • Game Master

Continue to download and install after system is OFF

      • GermGerm

        ? Yeah I got that.

  • Reese Dietrich

This is pretty much the greatest thing Nintendo could possibly do right now.

    • JumpMan

other than finish & release the new Zelda Wii U game by next week. of course, that’s impossible and it would be half of a game, if not less… so, yeah… you’re probabaly right!

  • audi lover

August for pikmin what a ball ache, thats autum in uk not spring, nintendo you need a beat round the head

  • Cerus98

Awesome news. Nintendo never fails to deliver.

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

    Good news !

  • Zombie_Andrew

Looks like installing game updates in the background will rival PS4’s ability to install in the background too. Excellent Stuff! Just give my fiancee the ability to watch NintendoTvii on one gamepad while I play games on the other. I’m sure there’s plenty of RAM left over for improvements in the OS. this should be one of them….

  • Wayne Beck

    You forgot:

Downloads will be installed in the background while playing a game.

  • uPadWatcher

Nintendo… now you’re playing with POWER!!!!!

  • ExtremeAzure98

This is some great news for the Wii U. All this, paving the way to E3. Excellent! Now, allow for customization to the Home Menu (at least being able to change colors and add background images), and then I’ll be set.

To add: – I really thought “Wii U Panorama View” was the codename to “Wii Street U”. When Iwata mentioned it, I was like “Huh?” – But now I see the difference.

  • Archiq09

    Pls for n64 games… viligente 8 1&2, battle tanks 1&2 and extreme-G (trank: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFTFsiG5Zpw&list=PLpvlz3Ws7w88U2LmPhjexK6IYomreKeat&index=68) 😉

  • dwawadadawdawdwatooexcited

  • I really hope they decide to put Earthbound on 3DS too.

  • Anonymity

Great news. Cant wait to see which games show up on the vc

  • Linskarmo

This update should be epic! I’m looking forward to it.

  • Emco 567

I really wanted to hear more about the new Zelda titles for the Wii U.

    • uPadWatcher

There’s a possibility they’ll be talking about Zelda U during their press conference at this June’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.

  • Colin Parks

Still no cross game chat? Still no trophy system implimented ???
Basic basic stuff guys sort it out!
