While sales of the Wii U console are struggling, Nintendo’s digital strategy is working out swimmingly. Satoru Iwata revealed today that the downloadable game sales for both the Wii U and 3DS surpassed 16 billion yen, which is around $160.9 million USD. That’s more than double the sales of last year. Nintendo’s business is increasingly an online one, as Iwata made mention that 87% of Japanese consumers and 83% of American consumers had taken their 3DS consoles online at some point. The Wii U’s connection rate is 80% worldwide.

To give some reasoning behind the move toward Nintendo Direct presentations, Iwata stated that previous Nintendo Directs reached 600,000 views in a matter of days. According to Iwata, the Nintendo eShop is the most popular way to watch Nintendo Direct, despite the videos being available on other websites like YouTube.

If there’s no fiscal copies at the stores……

    • Fred

Then I won’t be the only one downloading retail copies of games

    • AAAkabob

Physical bro, don’t you have spell check?

Edit: actually it looks like spellcheck made that error for you lol

      • nyjavi

        Lol my keypad stoped working

  • nyjavi

With no copies at the stores, of course it Wi

    • bizzy gie

There are copies, but retailers, like Walmart, aren’t very good at stocking them.

      • Superstick98

Actually my Walmart is pretty good. I just went there earlier and I saw everything I wanted! Injustice Gods Among Us, Lego City Undercover, Assassin’s Creed 3, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, etc. But I do understand you. I just got lucky. Usually 99.9% Of the time I go up there they don’t have what game I’m looking for. But then when I go up there with NO MONEY It’s sitting right there on the shelves. Funny how that works…. .-.

        • bizzy gie

Thank you. That’s exactly what happens to me. They only had two copies of Injustice and I snagged one. They didn’t have all the games, like Mass Effect and a few others, but they had only two copies the newest ones.

    • Pikachief

Yea what Bizzy gie said. Lots of stores are trying to get rid of their other games so they stick the Wii U ones in the back. They also probably don’t think Wii U games will sell so they don’t put up very many for sale. They’re there, they just aren’t putting them out.

  • GermGerm

Downloading Rayman Challenges App right now!!

  • Only a few are true gamers

See most haters don’t understand it’s online buying off eshop that has helped them and so i see Wii U doing even better in the next few months even with a ps4 and 720 coming and christmas will be fight to a point but i see more people getting wii u over ps4 due to there price and games like mario cart and zelda and more will put ps4 in a hard place

  • Justis Bistawros

In my opinion i don’t like downloading wii u games i like having the physical copy it makes me feel that i actually own the game than just a download.

    • Only a few are true gamers

True But Some games are downloadable only but i see what you mean..Myself ive downloaded alot and man i just hope they give us more folders

      • Yeah, I won’t buy retail games on the eShop. However, I do have like 40 download titles on my 3DS.

        • Only a few are true gamers

Well im more of using the memory for the indie games but as of now i over 27 wii u games now

          • Some are indie, but most are VC and DSiware. There aren’t enough indie titles yet.

          • Only a few are true gamers

No i mean for wii u Alot of my games are indie and some are disk games

          • Indie game on a Wii U disc? Which ones?

          • Only a few are true gamers

No what im saying is i have all the indie games downloaded and own a few of the disk games like mario U and zombi u and few others

  • Link Slayer

I like watching Nintendo Directs on Eshop easy to find

  • Kevin Sepulveda

One day all games will be digital downloads. This increase only supports that idea.

    • thedeciderU

      that sads

      • Kevin Sepulveda

I really enjoy that idea. Virtual property means less clutter in my house and less gas wasted going to pick up games lol

        • thedeciderU

i just hate the idea of drives dying and losing everything. do you ever really “own” downloaded content? as someone very connected with music, i had a really hard time with itunes (and still do). but at least with itunes, i can burn to disc and have a physical copy i guess. with these games, won’t everything be lost? is there a way to transfer? i’ve never tried and don’t know much about it. i’d rather not buy super mario bros. 3 for a 4th, 5th, 6th time in the future.

  • Adam Porter

i know something i’d love to digitally download already…….THAT BLOODY SPRING UPDATE!!!

        • Micks610

Yes it has just been released, I live in North America so I’m not too sure about the euro region.

          • El Tio Gamboyo

Im from Mexico so i get the update at the same time as the US, thanks for the info, im trying again later.

          • Micks610

No problem man, here to help out my gamer bros 😉

        • Only a few are true gamers

It’s true i just finished mine now

    • Adam Porter

      downloading it now, EXCITED!!!

  • Justin Carlson

It’s easy to increase your download sales when you only give a store two copies of a game.

  • Downloading the spring update as I type this.

  • Micks610

UPDATE Is just out guys !!!
Thumbs up so everyone can see !!

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

  • Jeovany

Of course they been double the only way to find Nintendo a game for the wii u is through the e shop. I can’t find them in stores

  • Lazara the Last

It is a great idea to makes the Nintendo Directs easy to find on the Wii U, then more casuals finds it too! 😀

  • Johny

OMG OF COURSE >.> you can watch nintendo direct on wii u …. stupid me… and i was struggling on my stupid pc that breaks….
    note to self…

  • Whenever I watch a vid on nintendo network it is soooooo sloooowwwww. Always buffering away. I have a 13mb/s connection!!

There would be even more digital downloads if Nintendo had the Wii U use hard drive instead of a sh*tty SD card.

    • Jeffery02

I hope you mean USB, because the SD card is only used for the Wii Menu, NOT the Wii U software.

So the Wii U actually has a hard-drive?

        • Jeffery02

Internally, no. It has flash memory. But you can use an external USB hard drive. In fact they encourage it.

  • Only a few are true gamers

What sucks is that japan got 10 games today on the VC and we got less and they even got Super Ghouls’n Ghosts Nintendo Give us that game and you can have my money
