Oct 15th, 2012

In the lead up to the launch of the Wii U, Nintendo has cut the price of the original Wii console to just $129. On top of that, Nintendo is including two games: Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. It also includes the Wiimote Motion Plus controller. The new bundle will be available on October 28th.

Nintendo will continue selling the original Wii console alongside the new Wii U. The Wii U will retail at $299 and $349, while the Wii will now cost less than half of that. The Wii U is fully backwards compatible with Wii game discs and accessories, and players will be able to transfer their game downloads from the Wii to the new Wii U.

Despite being six years old, the Wii is still a profitable business for Nintendo, especially in emerging markets such as South America. The Wii has sold almost 100 million units worldwide to date, and will likely break that record within a year.

In case you have yet to pick up the original console, now is a great time to do so. Not only will you enjoy some of the awesome games, but your Wiimote and accessories will be full compatible with the Wii U.

    Good move and bad move.
Good move for those who haven’t gotten their Wii yet.
Bad move, because Nintendo made the horizontal Wii not too long ago. Didn’t Nintendo say they wanted to differentiate the Wii U from the Wii by marketing it horizontally? 😐

    • AKA-Link77

Yah. . . its very easy for ppl to get confused and jump to the conclusion that its (Wii Uβ„’) the same thing [as the Wiiβ„’] and probably NOT buy one :(. But hopefully Nin & stores/store clerks will make Wii Uβ„’ VIVID enough for ppl to atleast suspect that its different. I doubt Nin will fail at that! πŸ˜€

      • Alienfish

I can see where there might be concerns here, but this thing is going to be on display at the store so people are going to see it and realize that it isn’t just a Wii. Even if people think it’s an add-on for Wii, the HD visuals coupled with obviously better graphics than Wii and the new Gamepad basically assure that this will be something they will look into buying. Any interested customer will ask the nearest store associate if they can just buy the new controller and the associate will reply, “No, this is a new system and the controller is not for Wii.” Problem solved.

        • AKA-Link77

          Precisely! πŸ™‚
          Thats why i put “…stores/STORE CLERKS…”
Cuz when they go to check out, the clerks may have them notified that there is a new console that can play all your Wiiβ„’ games plus new ones the customer wishes to buy for the Wii Uβ„’. In conclusion the store helps unwravel their confusion or encourages them to buy a Wii Uβ„’! πŸ˜€

        • SideScreamer

Actually, if any of my idiot coworkers are like other sales assistants around d tar world, they may 50/50 turn around say it’s a Wii add on. I’m onkt attacking you. Just merely stating that some people are preeeettttty fucking stupid.

    • ceramicsaturn

Yeah, after watching the Iwata Asks, where they discuss the orientation of the Wii U being done purposely to differentiate it from the Wii, you do have to wonder why Nintendo made the new version of the Wii lay horizontally when they took out Gamecube support. They could have made it look the same just without the ports on top.

      • Castamere

I’m guessing they originally made the Wii horizontal so they could cut the costs of including the silver stand. Perhaps then they did not have the foresight of differentiating between a vertical standing Wii U versus a horizontal one.

      • jon

But i wouln’t blame every one who thought the wii U was a wii add on because they both have ” Wii ” in their name so a casuals gamer that does not know much about gaming may think its an upgraded wii

    • revolution5268

well i see where you coming from, but keep in mind the wii u can also do vertical and horizontal.
to make sure people know what the wii u is the key is the games, that can grab attention.

    • JVAN

Wii has always been horizontal, with a stand to make it vertical. I have one of te first Wii consoles, and have always used it laying flat. The Wii U also has a vertical stand in the package, so it goes both ways as well.

  • Jon

Imagine all the people who buy Wiis thinking they’re getting the Wii U

    Bad name marketing is bad.

    • TopCat

It clearly says ‘Wii’ on the box, not ‘Wii U’.

    • Ben

Total retards if you ask me. The fact that the console is so cheap and it says WII on all sides its pretty cleas its not the WiiU.

    • Michael

Yeah, when I talk about Wii U, I still have people (who aren’t completely out of the loop, mind you) ask if that’s the new controller for Wii. I say no and someone else tries to explain that it’s the new portable system. There’s too much confusion already.

    • rafael

I think the wii-u controller is pretty huge in the box image, so people would be able to diferentiate…i hope

      • Cid

Dont be too sure. Some people are complete retards. Some stupid guy will try to buy a wii u for his kids, he’ll think that “a cow is a cow, a wii is a wii”. Then, when his kids see the wii and tell him he’s bought the wrong console, he”ll totally flip and burn down the store because they didn’t sell him what he really needed. At customer service, I meet these people regularly so I can assure you they exist, and they expect the cheapest items to somehow magically have the best features :p

    • srpg2ishere

Don’t know how. un less they mistake $299 with $130 you gotta to be crazy to not notice. A new CONSOLE will never cost less than 250 bucks. Unless of course the OUYA. That console is only 99 dollars 0-0

    • Grodus

That’s not the reason. People are just stupid. Look up “boy thinks Gameboy Micro is upgrade over 3ds.” Yes, that really happened.

    • Jon

The majority of people ( yeah the average consumer doesn’t read Wii U daily, crazy huh) have zero idea what the Wii U is.

Even the electronics section at Walmart don’t know. For them they think its just the “new Wii”.

      If you can’t see

      • TheImaj

Let’s hope they put some considerable dollars towards genius marketing. And let’s hope those ads show the clear difference between the two.

    • revolution5268

um i can say the same with playstation and xbox.

  • Cyanide

    Who needs a Wii now?

    • D2K

People who can’t afford to spend $249.99, or people whom want motion control games for senior-citizens homes or schools and need Wii’s in bulk perhaps?

    • Nintedward .

mmmmm, very young gamers and people from poorer south american countries and other countries round the world ? casual gamers who just want to play sing and dance ? etc etc .

Wii has many many hardcore and amazing games on it , but it’s perfect for poorer countries and casual gamers and children right now at the end of its lifespan.

Umm…I think they’re more interested in food.

        • Lazara The Last

I’m dying here!! You killed me with your jokes!!

      • HappyCamper

Wii is still a great console I have atleast 20 games waiting to play on Wii

Bought it a year ago and still having fun.

Not gonna sell it when I buy Wii U.

Its gona serve its purpose for atleast a year or two more.

        • Lazara The Last

Why? You can use Wii games on the Wii U, U know…

          • HappyCamper

No you’ll have to buy them from eshop. I won’t buy them again.

          • Adam Fox

The Wii also has home-brew…..until the Wii-U gets home-brew, then there is reason to keep the Wii. You can play custom versions of New Super Mario Bros, Guitar Hero, Mario Kart….also the older Wii’s have GameCube playback…so yes, there is reason to keep a Wii

          • Xblade13

            @Happy Camper:
Actually, it CAN read Wii Disks. Who told you it can’t? You don’t have to buy them again.

            It’s not the Vita.

          • AM

Nintendo confirmed that you can play existing Wii games using the disks and transfer the Wii digital titles on the Wii U, you do not have to repurchase anything from the eShop (in fact Nintendo has not even said they are offering anything on the eShop).

          • Grodus

@HappyCamper Why are you on a site called Wii U daily, a site that tells about the Wii U, and STILL not know a thing about the Wii U?

      • Ricardo

Hey! be careful what your saying!! I live in a south american country and that doesn’t mean I want to buy a wii, I haven’t have a wii before but rather I will buy a Wii U instead of a wii!!, those who buy a Wii are not true gamers and they don’t really care too much about wii specs and nothing related to that, just something they can use to play and nothing else.

        • HappyCamper

Hey! you be careful what you’re saying!! “those who buy a Wii are not true gamers”

Why aren’t they true gamers? Beacause graphics is more important than gameplay?

          You’re delusional.

          • Ricardo

True gamers = the ones who plays everyday, the ones who save money to buy new games, the ones who take care of their console and games, those are true gamers, not the graphics lovers everybody always talk about!!!!

        • Nintedward .

Easy bro ! I know how the world works , I know there is rich and poor people all over the world . But you do know that in Brazil for example A wiiu will cost the equivalent of $1000+ at launch ??? so the average person there won’t be able to afford a wiiu and will buy a wii .

Nintendo of America’s scott moffit said it himself not me . He said the wii is perfectly positioned to sell to the poorer countries of south america and the rest of the world .

I’m not being unfair , just saying what I have heard.

          • HappyCamper

Heard that too. I’m from Croatia (Europe) and wii U will cost about 500$ here and that’s a one month paycheck for most people here.

And wii is about 230$ here atm.

I wouldn’t be offended if you would say Croatians are gonna buy wii and not wii U because that’s how it goes in the world.

            Peace πŸ˜‰

          • Nintedward .

@happy camper , exactly . And croatia isn’t a poor country at all . It’s middle class with some rich and some poor .

BTW outlook festival in croatia is the best πŸ˜€ .

But yeh , I’m not being racist or anything lmao , I’m from England and I’m just pointing out that different countries have different econmic situations is all.

That doesn’t mean one country is better than the other , it’s just one country like USA has people from all over the world there working in a powerfull economy which churns out cheap produce in order to maximize sales.

          • Ricardo

            scott moffit is an ignorant.

        • ridley vs. samus

it’s not that they aren’t true gamers, maybe they just prefer to save money by buying older consoles and have the discipline to wait to play games until the price of a console drops. i actually kind of admire people like that. because they have the willpower to wait to get a game or console. they want. i know i don’t πŸ™‚

        • Unhasu

True! I’m from Brazil and I’ll get a Wii U as soon as I can. I’m not wanting to buy a $129 Wii, as I already have one (not a $129 one, ofc lol).

      • SuperSmashKerfuffle

Getting a wii is a good idea if you don’t have one, since you can put homebrew on it and get dios mios and play free gamecube n64 etc games. It’s nice since they haven’t released mario party 3 and stuff, and they don’t make gamecube games anymore.

inb4 pirating is bad and I should feel bad

      • Ο€

i want a gold wii u and all the call of duty games on it (:

      • Kav

        That is so f*cking racist!

        • Roedburn

No it’s not, so shut the fuck up we don’t want to hear it.

      • Hypnotic Alligator

@Nintedward—- Hey how was the hands on experience with the Wii U at Manchester. You said you would get back with us on your experience’s

      • Me

You know? If Nintendo had a latin american division they wouldn’t need to sell 7th gen consoles to our countries…they would be selling Wii U at a slighty higher price, not at $450-600…

Not to mention Wii’s price drop will probably not come over here…

      • LP

What an ignorant comment sir, it’s just too much to spend 5 minutes telling you why…

    • xdlugia

people who are not allowed to have a console that costs more than 100 bucks by their parents…
Yeah like my buddy who is forced to play his PS2 because “he has no use for another one.”

      • ridley vs. samus

aaaaaaargh. i have tons of friends with parents/guardians like that. it is so frustrating for them and me both.

      • TheImaj

    • srpg2ishere

      My dog.

      • Nintendo is da best

  • Dan

What a deal , great console to new kids without any previous console before!!

  • D2K

I feel for retailers that will have to deal with parents whom are going to buy the Wii thinking it is the ‘Wii U’ and then returning it the next day after Christmas. I told that to a friend of mine who is a GameStop manager and he liked to fell over. He didn’t even think about it until I told him!

    • Neonridr

It’s true. By not differentiating the name enough, it’s really going to confuse parents..

      • eyesac

I wonder if parents got confused with ps1 ps2 and ps3…? I did by golly I spent hundreds of dollars on this high tech gadget for my kid and didn’t even read the label on the box…

        • revolution5268

same with xbox & xbox 360.

    • nintendofreak

well i guess one must be preety stupid to think d new console is 129 n d 299 is d old one

      • nintendofreak

well at least dey made the wii really big so people could see it

      • D2K

Your comment suggests you have not worked in the retail industry. I have for nearly 20 years.

        ….People ARE that stupid.

        • NavyBlueYoshi

I know a guy who thought the game super Mario bros was 2 games in 1

    • 007 1/2

im not being grammar police, but liked to fell over? come on. i dont even know what u meant

      • frank (3dsFC=5155-3120-0417)

I AM the grammar police, and I’m requesting that you give a new statement worded in such a way that the people who speak English can understand what you meant by “he liked fell over”.

      • German Grammar Nazi

        Heil grammar!

    • Lord Reyne

I’m sorry, but this has been bothering me greatly. You consistently use “whom” incorrectly. =)

      • Zero

Im not him/her but he/she “he like, fell over”

        • Zero

Im not him/her but he/she but I think he/she meant β€œhe like, fell over”

  • Icanseeu

Wouldn’t it be better advice to to tell people to save their moves for a WiiU which can also play Wii games?

  • mc7791

good point D2K. Hopefully when the marketing push here in the U.S. starts on 10/17 Nintendo will make it clear that the Wii U is a whole new system and not just a Wii add on or something like that. Nintendo does know how to do effective marketing so time will tell.

  • Nintedward .

I don’t think people will get confused and buy an old wii instead of the wiiu . They will be clearly different in store , the wiiu gamecases are a a standout blue . And parent’s will ask ”is this the tablet controller” or whatever , or the store owners will advise them .

For any family’s on a budget or really young new gamers , the wii is perfect for them πŸ™‚ . Its great for hardcore gamers too except most of us have pretty much played and cleared all of its best titles , lol .

I will be buying and playing wii games on my wiiu for years to come !

  • CRT_hater777

The new Wii has no GameCube ports πŸ™

  • ceramicsaturn

Guys, I’m more than positive retailers will make sure parents get what they want. I’m sure they’ll ask anyone buying a Wii if that’s what they were searching for.

Plus, let’s be honest. I’m sure people will be able to tell the difference. Not that I have confidence in people’s intelligence, but simply because the Wii U will be sold out everywhere. You’d be stupid to think the untouched pyramid of Wii systems was the new console everyone was trying to get their hands on.

Then again, people do amaze me with their stupidity….

  • Nintendo Power (Chuck Norris)

    But I already have a Wii…..

  • Ledreppe

Farewell Wii, for this is your last pack offering. So many magical memories I had with you over the years, now make way for your child (Wii U).

  • srpg2ishere

    I wish the WII U costed $130.

    • NoPUNintendo

      Just wait 5 years.

    • LyingTuna

They cost $180 to make. I agree, Nintendo should sell at a loss! It will
      Be the best thing ever!

      • TheImaj

        For who?

  • srpg2ishere

Good deal but what’s the piont of buying this when wii u can play both those games and use that wiimote XD

    • NoPUNintendo

      Homebrew maybe.

  • srpg2ishere

ya know, i would actually buy this even tho im getting a wii u too. i already have a wii but i wanna buy it just to support nintendo. lol can someone tell me why?

  • srpg2ishere

Pretty soon we’ll be seeing just about every third party game for all three consoles right?

  • srpg2ishere

Hey who agrees? Would you like It to be a price drop for the deluxe and make it 299 and price drop for basic and make it 250? Either way one of these days one of them will get a price drop I just know It. πŸ˜€

  • Cugno the Swiss

For those craving for Wii U news: “Straight Right Studio” (dafuq? Never heard of them) have an original title in development for the Wii U, belonging to a well known franchise. They’re the same team that’s porting Mass Effect 3 to the Wii U… And apparently they’re even porting a Square Enix AAA title.
Also, Black Ops 2 will probably run in 720. Lol activision.

    • Nintedward .

Thanks for the news Cugno the swiss !!!! Acitivision were just wrongly refering to ”Full HD” as Upscaled 1080p instead of 1080p native .

All wiiu games will support upscaled 1080p output !. When Nintendo say wiiu first party games will be 720p at launch , that means the game will be rendered in true HD 720P . But the marketing boxes in store clearly says on the bullet points – ”Play games In 1080p” . That’s your answer , the wiiu will at least upscale its games for us 1080p TV owners .

I’m certain the wiiu can display native 1080p easily . The only reason a lot of games arent at launch is becuase people are rushing to meet the launch deadline and get their games out there .

In the future expect a lot of games to be rendered in native 1080p on wiiu.

  • srpg2ishere

I want super smash bros universe

  • srpg2ishere

Oh and by the way nintedward did you preorder a wiiu yet?

    • Nintedward .

I pre ordered on the first day possible . 13th september if I remember πŸ˜€

  • srpg2ishere

I didn’t get too pre order mine i may have to wait this christmas getting deluxe. My body is ready

  • srpg2ishere

Let’s think of names of the console that will come after the wii u. “Wii 3?” “Super Wii?” “GAMECUBE 3?” Maybeeee????

    • Cugno the Swiss

ROTFLMAO! What about “NES OF DESTINY” LOL!!

      • srpg2ishere

        lol i know right?

      • Xblade13

Wii was like NES (introduction to gaming, simple name),
Wii U is like SNES (more power, new contols, name just something added to past name),
So, next gen (after Wii U) will be like Nintendo64 (more power, new way to play games entirely [holographic games?], name representing the power). IDK on the name. Maybe N-HP (Nintendo HoloPlay)?

        • revolution5268

yeah i can totally see that if kinect 2 becomes very popular in the future.

    • EvanescentHero

The Thrii. Clearly the only choice!

  • srpg2ishere

    Sorry i meant gamecube 2

  • srpg2ishere

    I want a bluw wii u

  • kingtendo

the should have changed the damn name, i like the name for the first console but calling the new console a wii u sound’s god awful.

i really hate calling it the ”wii u” so i call it the ”FEARLESS” NOW YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAND ME.

    • Cugno the Swiss

As you probably understood with my previous replies to your comments, I think that “Wii U” is not a good name, but I think that “Fearless” is just plain b…

    • Zhenya

or we could just call it “the U”

      • kingtendo

yea that not a bad idea,we do need to come up with a alter name for this system, something game fan’s can identify with.

all my friend’s think the wii u is a game pad for the original wii.lol

  • NintendoMan :D

I got my Wii a couple months after it came out so it was like $200 and came with a Wiimote and WiiSports and the Wii was white. Still works fine and still use it for mainly netflix watching. Now we have a bunch of accesories, 4 wiimotes, wiiwheels, and about 25 games, but i only play 2 or 3 of them. I did layaway at walmart for a deluxe Wii U. SO EXCITED. im also goin to the demos their setting up at best buy on the 17th.

  • Johny

ugh…. ALOOOT of parents who dont really exactly know much about stuff will buy Wiis for their kids thinking its Wii U… like i said before… the name ISNT very good, and it WILL make uninformed people confused…
just saying…its not a problem for us internet and gamer people tho πŸ˜€ haha..

    • Zhenya

exactly, and it’s our job as gamers to get these “unintelligent” people to guide them and check on them if they really sure if they want to buy a Wii

  • srpg2ishere

Is It just me, or does every console that comes out tends to be 30 times better than It’s predaccessor( Don’t think I spelled that right)

    • Morley94

It really should always be that way, should it not?

  • srpg2ishere

Why do they say Wii is for kids? I let my 9 year old cousin play Super Mario Galaxy and he died 5 times in a ROW. This proves that you have to have skill and concentration to play Wii. However says that the Wii is for kids is just a hater.

  • srpg2ishere

When is the next news update going to come? I’m a power hungry fool. rofl (fire emblem)

  • srpg2ishere

Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo. Tsk tsk tsk. *You have amazed me once again.*

  • Dmonkeyman

I do not get why Nintendo decided to call it the Wii U and not something like Wii 2 or Wii ultra, but I think that parents will be able to manage considering all the commercials that will be on the airwaves and the in-store demos. the only problem is that political ads might drown out the Wii U commercials in the U.S

    • NintendoMan :D

definately what with the election in all. It would be kinda hard not to notice that they were electing a new president.

There’s been a xbox 360 Price cut by $50 as well. I come on Nintendo they need to show me how the online is going to be so I can buy wii u instead

  • Joeyperez

has nothing to do with wii u.. and of course it will drop in price its an old console … waited time reading this post. blah

  • joe

Lousy packins at this point in the game.

  • brain

who cares? all the children already have one πŸ˜€

  • Bhillx84

One good thing is if some people want a Wii nsmb bundle, they will like ly drop those to $99 at some point this holiday. I this Wii sport and sports resort are lame pack in games.

  • srpg2ishere

    I’m getting four pro controllers.

  • srpg2ishere

Man i cannot wait! Im getting a black, pink, blue, orange, and golden wii remotes along with my pro controllers and afterglow wii remote along with my afterglow and wii u headset (takes a deep breath) ….. Along with my 5 nunchucks and assassins creed 3, mario bros u, sonic all stars racing, lego city, ninja gaiden 3, pikmin 3! Oh god….. The endless possibilities!!! *o*

  • srpg2ishere

Oh and just so ya know they do have orange wii remotes. look them up their from pdp. The called ROCK CANDY

  • srpg2ishere

They also have these for ps3 and xbox 360 not that you should be worried about those get the wii remote ok

  • bellacretlaw

Of course you could say the same thing about people getting confused when the xbox 360 came out, according to people who say Nintendo calling their new console the wii u name is confusing because its similar to the wii, just think that sony and microsoft have both done this before.

    • LP

True that, good point. However, it is confusing, whn you’re talkin’ ’bout it you find yourself saying Wii when you mean Wii and saying Wii when you mean Wii U. Try explaining that to your dad…

  • SteampunkJedi

Well, I already have a Wii, so this doesn’t really concern me. But for people that want a Wii and don’t have one, this looks to be a great bargain.

  • Carlous Rex

Hmm, it’s great and all but it brings up some concerns regarding the name, it would’ve just been easier if they called Wii U for Wii 2 instead. I’ll wait the 6 weeks for the U though, I’m all excited, haven’t had a console in 10 years πŸ˜€

  • Lazara The Last

I bought my Wii over a year ago, and I got both Wii sports and a Wii remote plus and a nunchuck. I live in Norway BTW.

    • Lazara the Last

  • MujuraNoKamen

There’s not much point getting a new Wii to be honest, like you said, you’ll be able to use Wii remotes with Wii U but you might as well save your money up for Wii U and additional controllers. But on the other hand it is still a profitable business for them, and in emerging markets people may not have the money for a new Wii U so they’ll have a bit of catching up to do. But on the downside again, with the horizontal Wiis didn’t they remove gamecube game/GC controller compatibility? that sucks, look at all the classic titles these people are going to miss out on, as well as missing out on good control style, GC controllers were the cheapest for Wii. REALLY SUCKS!!!!
