Nintendo’s stock rose today after the company purchased a stake in Dwango Co. Dwango is a company that provides content through mobile phones. Stock rose 5.15% after the announcement and it’s the highest it’s been since August 6th. While it may seem like Nintendo is planning on entering the mobile market, it’s more likely that Nintendo plans on approaching Dwango to bring Miiverse apps to various smartphone platforms.

When the Miiverse app is available, will you be downloading it? We found out today that Miiverse for 3DS will not be able to send messages between friends or receive friend requests, so if the mobile app is able to do these things, it could be the best way to access Miiverse outside of the Wii U once it’s available.

I kind of think Nintendo may be preparing for mobile gaming in the future. We were talking a couple days ago about home consoles disappearing, but the handheld gaming market will dry up first. In a time of “lacking” home console progress, Nintendo needs to make sure it keeps its grip on the “on-the-go gaming” market. But yeah, it could just be the Miiverse app. Who really knows at this point.

    • Justagamer

I don’t see Nintendo stop making consoles

    • Magnus Eriksson

Its all like Michael Pachter have predicted. Mario will come on mobile phones.

      • Justagamer

Nah i don’t see that happening

      • Laud

Mario will probably come on Nintendo phones, not all mobile phone. (If that ever happened but I mean, look at the 3ds sales. Do you really think they’re going to stop making dedicated consoles? lol)

        • Magnus Eriksson

        • If it really had to come to that, Nintendo would just make their own smartphones. They could stay 1st party and the doomsayers would look like dumb asses. 😀

      • Steven_Segal

Yeah, since handhelds are doomed with 3DS selling way more than 30 million units in less than 3 years…

        • Magnus Eriksson

Its more reasonable to put handheld titles on a phone than a dedicated piece of hardware.

          • That Final Fantasy: All the Bravest, definitely not a cheap cash in, right.

    • Wayne Beck

Seriously this entire group of you guys needs to get over these ridiculous delusions. Dedicated Gaming Devices are never going to go anywhere because they are “Dedicated” gaming devices. Not generic hardware that can be rebuilt to play games.

Touchscreens with never be better than Hardware Buttons.
PCs will never be a consumer friendly way to play video games.

It’s been 25 years since they started saying console Gaming was Dead. It’s still a multi-billion dollar industry.

      • DOLBYdigital

I believe you will be in for a surprise sir :p this industry is changing much faster than it ever has… we will witness some major changes in the next 3-5 years

    • Schultz38

If companies don’t produce their games for mobile gaming then home consoles and handhelds will always have a place in the industry.

What I mean by that is if titles like Mario, Zelda, Halo, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, inFamous, etc. are never made for mobile devices, then consoles
CAN’T die. The only way consoles would go extinct is if companies like these purposefully switched over to handhelds. Which is very improbable, and for Nintendo titles, nearly impossible.

  • Justagamer

  • Agent721

Nintendo should put out its OG classics on phones. They’re already illegally out there anyways.

    • Wayne Beck

Yeah, but the common consumer actually doesn’t pirate games and those are the people who wouldn’t buy a Nintendo if they could play Nintendo on mobile.

I’m back… kickin’ trolls out of this site… It was necessary, that I come back to kick troll’s @$$ with facts.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

I think it is just for the sake of Miiverse. I wouldn’t mind if they decided to bring their games to mobile devices, just as long as they don’t give up on consoles(which I know they won’t).

  • Zuxs13

I’m wondering if this will have to do with Nintendo bring video capture to the Wii U. Isn’t this site offer video capture and such?

  • Steven_Segal

I’m back… kickin’ trolls out of this site… It was necessary, that I come back to kick troll’s @$$ with facts…

    • Canes Monta Jr.

my dad loves your movies especially the one with dmx

      • Steven_Segal

        aww… Thanks… Yeah, its a good movie.

      • DOLBYdigital

his old movies are the classics… marked for death and under seige and hard to kill… quality old school action flicks

        • uPadWatcher

Casey f**king Ryback? Under Siege 2 was one of my favorites. On-topic, I’m glad that Nintendo have purchased Dwango as well as their stocks went all the way up! Nintendo Network have sent an ally to go with the Wii U… the Nintendo 3DS!

        • Michael Legault

He was great in Machete… lol

      • Exit Wounds.

    • Gameonfool

      Ok troll inviter, segal impersonator

      • Steven_Segal

seems like you are new here huh?

        • Gameonfool

          I’ve been around

          • Steven_Segal

yeah, I’ve been absent for 2 months on this site and now, I’m back… I don’t invite trolls, I combat them with facts and factinions.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

“I’m back… kickin’ trolls out of this site… It was necessary, that I come back to kick troll’s @$$ with facts…”

Saying things like that just invites them around. It’s nice if you like to combat them with facts, but the average troll doesn’t give two shits about what is fact or subjective. Lol. So why bother? Trolls will be here one way or the other. Apppreciate the humor, but it doesn’t get rid of trolls off the site. 🙂

          • Steven_Segal

I appreciate you took the time and effort to write this post, but I will continue my purpose, sir.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

A purpose that is a lost cause. Lol. Good luck to you.

          • Steven_Segal

You know Steven Segal, I will never give up the fight against trolls, someday we’ll win it.

          • Javier Smith

Trolls are hard to fight, but if anyone can defeat them, it’s Segal.

          • Gameonfool

If someone wants to troll they wiill, trust me I know. Facts are not a death to trolls. By the way hard to kill I watched at cinema when I was 11, my moms other half worked at the movies. Oh the old memories, so great

          • Steven_Segal

You shouldn’t be watching those violent movies (even though they’re awesome) at that age… lol

          • Gameonfool

There wasn’t too much censorship in my childhood. My early memories consist of hings like predator, van dam, robocop and o course segal. It weird now because having children makes me see the violence in films more now so they are more sheltered, sometimes I wonder if too much

          • Shota

age doesn’t matter. your movies where awesome even when i was a kid

          • Steven_Segal

            They’re still awesome son.

          • Shota

yes they are. steven segal forever

    • Funkee Dynamite

You fun like Pheobe from Friends. Check youtube if you don’t believe me haha

  • Nintedward

Dwango unchained! I have no clue what implications this as for Nintendo, but yay I suppose!

  • adamm

A quick search shows Dwango also owns Niconico, a video sharing site worth 11 billion Yen, and Dwango itself also “also plans, develops, and manages network entertainment systems.” Definitely not just a mobile content company.

    • They could streamline Nintendo Network.

  • Fred

Yes when there’s a Miiverse android app I’ll get it!

  • Jack5221

If anything, they’re probably going to do something with Miiverse, like allowing users to read and post stuff on Miiverse through their smartphones. As far as playing games on them? I highly doubt it. Even though analysts constantly say that “Mobile gaming is KILLING consoles!” If mobile gaming is so much better than consoles then why did the Ouya fail? What analysts don’t seem to realize is that mobile gaming is crap, and NO ONE buys a smartphone / tablet just to play games on them. Every single iPhone / Android phone can download games. Plus there are no dedicated phones / tablets made just for gaming. And lets be honest here…

Who the hell doesn’t have a smartphone this day and age? Everyone and their mother has one. There are easily more smartphones on this planet than there are consoles. Just because people download Fruit Ninja, or Angry Birds, and play it for 15min, doesn’t mean mobile gaming is taking a stab at consoles. It just means that, people take their cell phones with them EVERYWHERE, unlike their console & tv. Plus, a smartphone / tablet doesn’t have the capacity or specs to run a full fledge game. I really wish analysts would open their eyes and see that…

    • I don’t have one.

      • Alexander Kleinwechter

        You are my hero 🙂

        • XD thanks. Doesn’t look like I’ll be upgrading anytime soon either. Phones are expensive, and do way too much for something that’s supposed to be used to make calls and text. Why can’t a phone just call and text people? Why do we need all this freeware BS crap on our communication devices?

          • Raptok

Nokia Brick is my phone of choice. It has a battery life of days, very sturdy and has even survived the dreaded washing machine!
            Sent from my Wii U.

          • My Palm Centro is pretty bricky. battery life is about 2 days or so as well

      • jjbredesen

Nice, i survived without one up to 2011, but now i own a Galaxy SII

        • I didnt even have texting until 2011

          • jjbredesen

          • That_one_guy99

            I don’t even have a cell phone

          • iamserious

I don’t even have a phone. And I still use dial up! Lol jk! 😛

      • Mason742

Still on an 8gb iPod 2nd generation. Using Google Voice to text on wifi.

    • Merrfn

Nobody in my household has a smartphone. My mum and dad are still surviving on a cheap 2006 models XD

    • Funkee Dynamite

I cant stand it when people say consoles are obsolete because of cell phone games. Hasn’t everyone noticed that cell phone games are flat, basic, repeatative and often require you to pay ridiculous amounts of money to buy credits. i was “playing” simpsons tapped out and they wanted up to 100 bucks to buy these crappy donuts just so i could spend them buying a buiding that i can only look at.

It was hardly a game… Its garbage, and i constantly see people at work all excited about the new flavor of the month cell game and 3 weeks later nobody gives a shit. Cell games are not even in the same realm as console games(new or old)… just a rumor someones created to push smart phones on people more than they already do imo.

      • Rob

LOL. Seriously? Yeah at first I like mobile games until I ran into that same issue. You have to pay to continue.

    • Michael Legault

Sony tried making a phone geared for gaming, it looked a lot like a psp go, and fared just about as well, but the specs on some phones and tablets aren’t too bad for what they are and they’re only getting stronger. That being said i would still much rather whip out my 3ds or play something off tv on the wii u than play something on my phone, they’re also much cheaper options… Ipads are stupidly expensive for something meant to be rendered obsolete in a year’s time…

  • Entropyguy

If they release a Miiverse app for Windows Phone, I’d download it, sure.

  • Paladinrja

This is actually much more significant than people think. DWANGO are a telecommunications company and gaming matchmaking service with thier own R&D and worldwide hub. DWANGO netcode is ubiquitous. They’ve come a long way since thier beginings in 1995.
Its obvious that Nintendo plan to deploy Miiverse through the provider but further it might be the missing piece needed to expand Miiverse as well, into the fully fledged social media, content and matchmaking overhaul for Nintendo’s servers. This is something to watch closely.

  • Javier Smith

I would like to see Nintendo make their own phone one day a-la Xperia Play, to combat skeptics who believe they need to go software-only.

But seeing as Dwango is a content-provider only, doesn’t look likely. Plus, it’s their console that is lagging behind, not their handheld. Making a phone would only add competition to the 3DS.

I don’t see them making “games” for mobiles, but maybe apps that allow you to interface with console games remotely, similar to what Watch Dogs and The Division have which allows for interaction with smart-devices. But even if it’s just Miiverse, I’m down!

  • Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always wanted to see a Nintendo phone OS. Have your mii hold a phone when talking, make miis for contacts, etc… I think it could be cool! Maybe for their next portable?

    • Tim van Broekhoven

Yes exactely! That’s what I want too 🙂 Something like the sony xperia play.

  • blindtiger

you cant have friends on 3ds?

  • Rinslowe

  • Rodger Jamjet

Very interesting and would think it will help Nintendo with possible Wii U specific apps too? It will make for some good stuff in the future I hope …

  • Ryan Williamson

I have had a miiverse app for 6 months now.

  • Javier Vega

More like they are trying to improve the 3DS a bit more.
