The Media Create numbers for this week in Japan are in, showing the Nintendo 3DS sold 159k units, while the Wii U sold only 5k units. The massive amount of sales for the Nintendo 3DS can be attributed to the recent release of Monster Hunter 4, but the bigger feat here is that the Nintendo 3DS has surpassed Wii sales in just 2.5 years.

The original Wii sold 12.6 million since its launch in 2006 in Japan, while the Nintendo 3DS has sold 12.7 million in just 2.5 years. That’s an impressive feat and speaks to the sheer amount of games that are available on Nintendo’s handheld console. We’d love to see the Wii U doing this well and hopefully now that Nintendo has turned the 3DS into a success story, we’ll see that same level of dedication with the Wii U. Here’s the full Japanese sales for this week:

Even in Japan, 3DS XL is outselling the 3DS. Isn’t it called the LL in Japan or something?

    • Yep, it is the 3DS LL in Japan. I find it interesting that the XL is outselling the original model, considering the development of the original DS XL was done for “Americans who like bigger things”.

      • palomino blue

        Exactly what I was thinking.

        • Mr. Berzerk

The ordiginal 3ds is just to small and cramps your hands. That is why. (Speaking from personal experience as well as market feedback.) Also intersting is that the psp sold only 73 less than the vita.

          • Richard Ellicott

i don’t think the xl would fit well in my pocket for the REAL reason for the consoles success… why collecting hats ofcourse

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Bigger is better.

  • Jack5221

I remember when the 3DS first came out. Sales were bad and idiot trolls said things like “This is Nintendo’s LAST handheld, THEY’RE DEAD” Now, 3DS is probably going to outsell PS2. Hats off to you Nintendo, making an amazing come back. I’ll be purchasing my 3DS XL along with Pokemon in 3 weeks πŸ™‚

    • Are you going to get a special edition 3DS XL? I just got my 3DS XL black version and love it!

      • Jack5221

Yes! Im getting the special edition pokemon X XL (The blue one) to go along with my Pokemon X version. πŸ˜€

        • Akatosh

          I’m getting the 3DS XL tomorrow! ^^

      • Zuxs13

Ill wait till next year when the next version comes out. 3DSi lol.

        • Akatosh

You should wait even longer for the 3DSi XL. πŸ˜›

      • NintendoNoob

Hey Ashley! Consider this article! Bungie is considering to put Destiny on Wii U but only if the demand is high enough, but it has to be signed by a petition

        • jay

“if the demand is high enough”

          This crap again?

          • NintendoNoob

Well the guy who talked about the game going to Wii U does work for Bungie, so he should know what’s going to happen

          • QuizmasterBos

Following the link, the site believes the man doesn’t work for Bungie. So what’s next?

      • Razo_E

I’d love a black version, but I just wrapped my XL in a carbon fiber pattern from I am interested in a 2DS for my wife to play with my daughter’s “regular” 3DS and I at home.

      • Jacob D. Taylor

Same here! I traded in the blue (rest in peace, although it was in great condition) for the black. I’d love a special edition but those that are available haven’t caught my eye. The luigi was meh, the pokemon just doesn’t grab me and the animal crossing new leaf was a little colorful for me. I’m very conservative in colors. I LOVED the Zelda and fire emblem 3ds’ and I hope that an attractive special edition XL comes out soon!

    • kevin nun—-

On a side note, my Wii U keeps freezing every time I click on YouTube videos on the internet browser. Is that just me?

      • Jack5221

Theres a Youtube app for free on the eShop. Try using that instead of using internet browser to watch Youtube videos.

        • NintendoNoob

It’s a pretty bad one though

          • Jack5221

Im not really sure how it works. I deleted it along with the Hulu Netflex and Amazon apps to create space on my tiny 8gb Wii U. If its not working through browser then looks like using the app might be the only way. :-/

          • NintendoNoob

You should wait a bit with the basic Wii U lol. 2 years from now and it’ll be like gold. Only the black model is available… I think

      • Peter Lythaby

No its happened to me a few times recently viewing through the browser πŸ™

        • MississaugaMaverick

ya same here sometimes it works and other times it freezes up.

    • Luca Invernizzi

It’s indeed amazing that those numbers have been reached without a pokemon game… I mean… what’s going to happen when X&Y will be out?

Still, and this only my humble opinion, I think this may be the last handheld console (Not for nintendo… I mean the last for everyone). At least in the way we intend it right now: in 3 or 4 year most of the people will use their tablet or phone to play handheld.

Maybe big N will surprise us and come out with a device that is more then just a console. I would love a tablet from nintendo, for instance.

  • Ony

Hopefully that will decide Capcom to release Monster Hunter 4 in west :<

    • John Andalora

MH has always done extremely well in Japan, but has been lukewarm to Western audiences. Typically Japan sales are over half the sales of the game.
Could be a long time before anything is shown to the West.

  • Sol Ridgeway

Everyone owns a 3DS. Nintendo needs to exploit that fact and make it compatible with the Wii U in some way.

    1. Make it where they can connect and you can play your games on the big screen like they did with Gamecube.
    2. Make some games that interact together with the 3DS and Wii U. Like Pokemon.
    3. Make virtual console game purchases accessible on both

    *Most Important*.
    4. Develope 1 game that could use both, like a 3D Zelda game that you play on Wii U, but has a top-down view Zelda game expansion pack on the 3DS that does effect the story, or tells a side story (I think telling a Sheik story that went along with Links would be awesome.). Then bundle the games together. Also have a huge Zelda bundle of the Wii U, 3DS, and the games.

    • Andrew Chambers

The first two are definitely possible without any firmware updates, just look at MH3U.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I can support number 1 considering I had a Gameboy Player for my Gamecube years back. It would be quite enticing.

    • Shota

      your comment made me happy

    • Martijn Plasmans

Why you think they make Mario 3d world, sequel to 3ds’ 3d land πŸ˜‰

Bring out Donkey Kong Country returns on 3ds just months before Tropical Freeze comes for Wii U ?

      etc. etc.

      • Sol Ridgeway

Yes, but they do not interact. If they interacted then 3DS fans would want to buy the Wii U.

        • Martijn Plasmans

Maybe. Now they brinmg the sequel to the other platform. Maybe that will workout very well.

  • NextChannelGames

Wow, i’m glad that the 3DS/XL is selling amazing. Makes me wonder if they should had MH4 for the Wii U instead of being on the 3DS

  • Zuxs13

Curious as to how long it took the DS to reach this number.

  • Merrfn

Oh my god. The 3DS is butchering the Vita.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

It’s a shame considering the PSP sales wise did quite well. Problem with Vita is kinda the same issue with the Wii U. Lack of original games. For that, the Vita has suffered and will continue to do so unless Sony can bring out some better quality titles for it. Just as Wii U can turn itself around, so can the Vita.

All that said, Nintendo will continue to dominate the handheld market until someone like them gives them a run for their money.

      • John Andalora

I think the Vita’s “issues” in particular is that there isn’t much that differentiates it from the PS3. Practically every game on Vita can either be bought on PS3 or is found in a better form on PS3.
3DS has a big difference, and a rather impressive line-up that Wii U owners will not see unless they get the console.

Since I don’t have a PS3, Vita is perfect for me. I have great games I never would’ve known about without it, and it’s gotta be my favorite console right now (absolutely serious, not a joke). However, the sad cold truth is no one cares since they can get the games on their console and don’t need to spend $200 more for the handheld form of it.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Yeah, that was about what I was saying. Most games on Vita have been ports of consoles just as PSP was for the most part. This time consumers aren’t falling for it.

          • John Andalora

Well I certainly like it. Can’t get too many ports of home console games from other handhelds, and certainly not at the same quality. But, I understand why it’s not a big hit for most people.

      • Merrfn

The 3DS is by far the better option. I actually would like the 3DS to have some better competition, so that developers and Nintendo would REALLY step up there game. The 3DS is a fantastic system, but the Vita looks like it could be as well.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Vita is a good system, it’s just plagued with poor selection of games and lame ports from consoles. If it had more original titles, I can bet it’d be selling far better.

          • Merrfn

The PS Vita slim is going head to head with Pokemon X&Y… bad move.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I haven’t even paid attention to the Vita much. What does it have to go head to head with Pokemon X &Y?

          • Merrfn

Nothing. Just a new Re-designed Vita. Or at least nothing of interest.

          • John Andalora

Depends on how loose of a definition you have with “head to head.” Valhalla Knights 3 is coming out on October 12th (not quite the most popular title), with LEGO Marvel Superheroes and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate on Oct. 22nd and 25th (respectively). I’m more interested in Ys: Memories of Celceta on Nov. 5th and Tearaway on Nov. 22nd.

But I think Sony is putting their big money now on Beyond: Two Souls coming out on october 8th.

  • Lil J Moore

Where’s the it prints money gifs at?

    • Guest

      Ask and you shall receive

    • Guest

I think I got it right this time.

  • the1andonlyIKY

I kinda wish you woulda worded the wii u sales slightly differently..its closer to 6k. Not a big deal, but. And also is that up or down from last week?

  • LukeBlackburn

look where 3ds was rightnow two years ago… no one was supporting it but now all the companies are people are saying wii u doomed i would like to see them say that after smash bros.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I dont think one game is gonna cut it. It will help sales a lot, but it
won’t carry the Wii U. I expect sales to be better this holiday, though.
As for next year, depends on what’s brought to the table. Smash Bros is a good start no doubt, but it’s going to need more games like that to thrive.

      • Luca Invernizzi

I kind of agree with you: it’s not just a couple of game, it’s having a wide array of options that will help.

        We are getting there, anyway.

I’m just sad that GTAV is not on WiiU… anyone knows why?

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Not enough profit to be had there. Less than 4 million Wii U’s sold isn’t enough. I still would’ve gotten it on PS3 regardless, but I think everyone should experience it. Unfortunately, the Wii U isn’t selling enough hardware for it to happen.

          • Marcell Wade

Their is a slight possibility GTA 5 could still come to Wii U, Rock Star has not yet started development on the PS4 or Xbox One versions just yet, PC version should be next, and it was confirmed that they do have a Wii U dev kit in their possession?

          • Daniel Gonzalez

They have them in their possession, but I doubt it’ll be used to develop GTA V for Wii U. Yes, there is a slight possibility, but I don’t see it happening. Maybe the next installment 4 or 5 years from now.

Chances are, it’ll be on PS4 and Xbox One than the Wii U. It’s not me ousting the Wii U, just being a realist. Optimism is good though, keep it up.

          • Marcell Wade

I say they should put the game on Wii U, Ghosts is coming to Wii U, even though Black Ops 2 did not sale to good because of Wii U’s sold, but shouldn’t sales on the other platforms pick up for low sales on Wii U, that’s why I say they don’t have anything to lose, by making the game widely available like Call of Duty Ghosts.

  • Jake

Amazing. I do think nintendo will revive wii u. It probably won’t be better than the 3ds but it will have a chance in japan unlike Xbox

  • lwlshintalwl

I wanted to buy a 3DS XL but I am not sure how digital downloads work on this system. I already have a 3DS and I have a club nintendo account linked to this one. Are the games I buy on eshop linked to my club nintendo account? sorry for the noob question.

    • Prince Ali

No, it is linked to the 3DS. However, you can transfer all your digital content to a new 3DS system. You just need to have both of them at the same time… so don’t get rid of your old 3DS until after you purchase the new XL and transfer everything over.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

Good job, Nintendo. As usual, you know how to handle the handheld market. Keep it up.

  • Mario

Okay. I hear a lot of doom for the WiiU. And yet, is selling better then the Xbox 360. Uhhhh… Exagerating much?

    • Kirbyomega

Yes, but the 360 is years old now. I’m sure the sales were just as good when it was the same age as the Wii U.

      • Mario

      • Luca Invernizzi

As far as I know, not really: both PS3 and XboX360 were doing poorly during their first year.

        • Kirbyomega

Hm really? I wouldn’t remember I hadn’t gotten into game that much in 2006-07…

    • Yen

Also, this list is for Japan only. Xbox was never that well received in Japan IIRC.

  • Kirbyomega

Just thought I’d say that the Nintendo DS has sold 153.93 million units since launch.

    The list goes:

    1) The PlayStation 2 with 155 million consoles since 2000
    2) The Nintendo DS behind by only 1.07 million consoles (153.93 since 2004)
    3) Game Boy and Game Boy Color with 118.69 million units since 1989 and 1998 respectively.
    4) The PlayStation with 102.49 million since 1994
    5) The Wii with 100.04 million since 2006.

(to put it in perspective the Wii U is number 26 on the list with 3.61 million, just under the Atari 7800)

Long live all the consoles and may their sales
continue to grow for many years to come!

  • therealruben1

After pokemon x and y,the ps vita will be dead

  • Leo

    The 3DS owns it!!!!!!!

  • Pablo Samaniego

Now just imagine the overgrow of sales of 3DS when PokΓ©mon X & Y them come out, and its about time for SMB too; i’m looking forward to buy the 3DS XL this holidays πŸ˜€ Greetings from Guatemala

  • SkyStormXD

Lets wait for Pokemon X & Y, and see it rising more faster!

  • Jacob D. Taylor

This is PHENOMENAL new! Of course trolls still have the ‘North America’ argument but those sales are taking off. The fact of the matter is no other platform delivers animal crossing, fire emblem, luigi’s mansion and pokemon. iOS CAN’T handle those.

  • Jacob D. Taylor

Can anyone reference me to some NA sales as well? I’m curious to see where we stand.
