For those of you who are enjoying the Year of Luigi, you’ll be happy to hear some of the news that Satoru Iwata shared with us during the latest Nintendo Direct. New Super Luigi U will not feature Mario as a playable character. Instead, for multiplayer mode, Luigi will be joined by Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, and Nabbit. Players of the original game will remember Nabbit as a villain character who stole things from Toad and needed to be chased.

Nabbit is a multiplayer character only and features the same speed and jump as the Toads, but his special ability is the ability to avoid damage instead of powering up. This makes him a great option for children who might want to play with their parents.

In addition to the new character, Iwata also announced to celebrate the year of Luigi, a standalone version of the DLC would be released in stores. This version will be available August 25th, while the downloadable version will be available June 20th. The neat thing about it is it appears to come in a green Wii U case, so for those of you who like your physical games, you may want to wait a month and pick this one up.

The downloadable version is priced at $19.99, while the standalone version will be priced at $29.99. It’s $10 more, but it features that cool green case and artwork for you to add to your collection.

  • Zombie Boy

I think releasing a standalone version is a great idea. Some of us prefer to have a solid copy rather than a downloaded version of a game. A sign that Nintendo are finally starting to do things right, maybe?

    • If they can remedy availability problems that have plagued them this year. Nearly every 3DS release has had problems.

      • Zuxs13

this is the Wii U though, its better… LOL I am sure it will be fine.

        • Don’t be so sure about that. Lego City: Undercover had problems too and that’s a Nintendo published title.

          • Zuxs13

But this is a DLC, and there hasn’t been any major problems getting content from the eShope. When Lego City was in short supply you could still easily DL from the eShope (at a discounted price if you have a deluxe model and earned some rewards cash) .

But i haven’t had any trouble getting copies of anything in store from Best Buy and now they are partnering with Nintendo so they will keep this great supply chain.

          • Right, I understand that about the downloadable copy. I’m speaking purely about the physical copy that some people will want because of the unique case color.

          • Zuxs13

Best Buy hun, they always have a copy (unless you live in a remote area) . It is a cool case isn’t it.

          • Monster hunter as well

      • Zombie Boy

I normally get my games from Amazon and the like, anyway. But having more games to put on shop’s shelves means more shopkeepers being interested in selling Nintendo’s products. For example, if the Wii U only has five games available then, at best, stockists are just going to put those five titles with the Wii games – why use an entire shelf? We’ve all seen this and know it to be true. But if the Wii U has dozens of games available, then stockists are going to be more interested in stocking those titles (the key ones, at least) and displaying them on their own shelf! That’s good for Nintendo (from an advertising and availability perspective) and good for those people who buy from games shops, as they’ll have more choice from the bigger selection of games on offer.

  • Clel

    I love the box art.
    It’s green… my favorite color.

    • I love the box-art too! πŸ˜€

      • Tim van Broekhoven

Mine is green too πŸ˜› I’ll be definetly picking up the boxed version.

    • LopsidedPasta

I gotta say, I’m a sucker for different colored game boxes.

    • Purple it’s better!!!
      I hate Luigi ( ΰ² _ΰ² )

      • You’re just jealous because they like Luigi better than you. Besides, you’re mean!!! Just like Wario!!!

        • WarioForever

Hey, no insult’s on me! And never insult Waluigi!

      • FlyingBoat

all your comments across all the stories are just like “woo im waluigi!!”

        • Magnus Eriksson

          Come on, its funny.

          • FlyingBoat

            Just pointing it out

      • Clel

Not this time, Waluigi! It’s Mama Luigi time.

      • andrΓ©

maby they do a Waluigi DLC in the future=) or a DLC so you are bowser against mario=)

    • Shaise Mughal

This is amazing because, 1 I dont have NSMBU , 2 the box art looks great! I want it!

  • It’s super smart for Nintendo releasing it for retail and it’s only 30$! Instant buy for me! πŸ˜€

    • gimpcell

      DLC done right.

  • Looks like I am going to have to hook up that USB hard drive.. I bought myself a new 4TB USB to use for my PC just so I can use the 1TB one on my Wii U. I like having physical copies too but downloading them and having the games right in the menu is very convenient. No disc swapping.

    • I need to invest in a hard drive, too. Might make a good article to discuss finding the right one for Wii U owners!

      • That would be a good article… Hard Drive prices have finally come down to more affordable prices again. In some cases you can get a decent 1TB for like $70-$80. Heck the 4TB one I got was on sale for $169.

        • Adrian

Portable Hard drives can be fickle things.

          • I think Nintendo recommends against portable ones NOT having their own power source. The ones I have are not portable and have their own AC adapter. I do have a 1tb portable one I use with my laptop though too.

        • der

A Y USB adapter can be used to power HDDs without an AC adapter. Works great with my Seagate.

          • So that would take two USB ports to power the drive??

      • Fred

I bought a 2TB one back before Christmas When i learned the the Wii U didn’t have enough storage for NBA 2K13, and it works like a champ.
I don’t buy discs I download all the games so it has lots of game on it now.

        • Ideally that’s what I’d do. These days companies are sending review codes instead of review copies, so having a big drive is going to be necessary purely for doing the job.

      • please do so. I need to know which storage devices work well and are cheap :3

  • HSN1

I doubt that the standalone version will sell much, since I doubt someone will want to play this when they didn’t want to buy NSMBU, but maybe it’s good for people who have a bad/no internet connection. I can feel it becoming the first “rare” WiiU game in some years.

    • Fred

Are you kidding. Think about parents buying a Wii U for their kid. They see 2 “Mario” games one costs $60 and the other costs $30. You really think mom is going to pick the $60 one?

      • Nikko Ybanez

So true. Props to you man.

  • Just curious, but is the retail version for a limited time only?

    • Johny

  • Talesgirl015

New Super Luigi U, won’t be a system seller once again Nintendo does little to convince potential customers to purchase Wii U.. Too late now, unless they somehow steal GTA 5 from Sony and Microsoft then most of the attention will be put on their competition. they will make lots of headlines and convince core gamers to purchase PS4,Xbox 720…have a real next gen experience..

    • Petri

Yes, this direct felt little stale, nothing that exciting.
But doubt this DLC was never meant as a system seller.
And I dont think Wii U is in direct competition with twin sisters.

      • Jon

the Nintendo direct did seem a bit stale however, this is only the first of many to come, they said they were going to be doing a string of them during E3 which is a little more than 3 weeks away, I am pretty sure well be seeing a lot more in the coming weeks πŸ™‚

    • Fred

Pikmin 3 and W101 will be system sellers.

      • Tim van Broekhoven

I don’t think they will be real system sellers…

        • Fred

Really? I guess I see it different, If I didn’t already have a Wii U, W101 would have me sold.

          • Tim van Broekhoven

Yeah, but I guess you are a Nintendo fan and you know what W101 or Pikmin is. There are way more parents out there and when they see Pikmin in the store they probably don’t know anything about it. But when they see Mario kart they will be like: ‘Oh, mario kart! My kid loved that on the wii, so I’ll buy this game and a wii u for christmas’ My point is, Pikmin and 101 are not that ‘famous’, so they won’t be system sellers…

          • Tim van Broekhoven

Sorry, btw if you couldn’t really understand me. My English is very bad πŸ˜‰

          • Fred

I understand what you’re saying, I hope you’re wrong, but I see how you might be right.
I’m hoping people will see friends playing W101 and go out and buy one too.

    • Zuxs13

why do some many people seem to think Mario or in this case Super Luigi U isn’t a system seller? The on eon the wii sold over 40 million copies. The WIi U version hit over 75% of consoles sales in number of copies sold. It sells, and It sells better then GTA, CoD, and all the other big hitters this fall combined.

      • jay

It sells WAYY more than GTA. People just have shit for brains.

    • D.M.T

Another person complaining about the same things. It’s funny how you people think Nintendo recycles games but no one recycles comments like you people who bitch and moan about every Nintendo does.

Have fun having your so called “real next gen” experience and let us enjoy our Wii U.

      • jay

        Their logic:

“3D Mario is a recycled Mario Kart”

“Call of Duty 12 Is teh Hardc0r3!!”

        • Adam Fox

the gaming market has been overly saturated with Call of Duty games and “clones” of it….look at how many military-style FPS games have hit the market since CoD was originally released…….seems like every AAA-title lately is a FPS……

    • NkoSekirei

theres watch dogs, splinter cell blacklist, xenoblade 2,mario kart u,wind waker,hd zelda in the works, super smash bros u,the wonderful 101,new sonic game, yoshi yarn, and plenty more to come but u trolls wont understand and ull end up living in boxes wen wii u starts picking up steam

    • Jon

I don’t think this was meant to be a system seller. if it was, there would have been a lot more on it.

    • FlyingBoat

we have a nintendo exclusive sonic. thatd be system seller for me. were gonna get zelda games and, looking at the rumours from the other day, a whole lot of other titles as well, that people have been waiting years for. people will buy the system to play hd star fox, itd be amazing if they did it right, and this is nintendo, they do things right. super luigi u isnt supposed to be a system seller, its DLC, after all.

now if you excuse me, im gonna wait on eb games website until they let me pre-order me some DLC

    • jay

I’ve noticed this bitch posts comments a little too similar to that other troll…
      “Nintendo sucks” “GTA V”

OH I GOT IT!! Knowledgeiswhatsup is a dick-sucking transvestike!!

    • Adam Fox

it isn’t meant to be a system seller…….its DLC! The only people that think DLC are “system sellers” are the brain-washed Call of Duty crowd….they think Map Packs are like gold….Folks that got New Super Mario Bros U will more than likely be the biggest market for those that get New Super Luigi U….meaning Nintendo gets a $60 sell plus either $20 or $30……and since Nintendo did the DLC RIGHT, its a big thing for them…..unlike CoD “Map packs” you are getting more than just a couple extra multiplayer levels to play…u get pretty much an entirely new game….I was really glad to see this technique on Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS where you beat the game with Mario and then you get a new “world” with Luigi and get to play in a more difficult mode…..Nintendo may not be pushing out DLC like games on PS3 and Xbox360…but they are doing a GREAT job of what they have been doing……Nintendo doesn’t need GTA V to sell a system….PS3 and Xbox360 will already have it….Nintendo’s exclusive is what sells a system….you don’t buy an Xbox360 just to play Call of Duty..u can do that on PS3 or PC….but you can’t buy a Xbox360 to play Uncharted, God of War, Super Mario, Metroid, Star Fox, Zelda…..thats what you get a PS3 or Nintendo for…….Nintendo has some plans up their sleeves for the Wii U… know Super Smash Bros will be coming out on it….along with a new Mario Kart, Star Fox, Zelda….and whats going to set these apart is going to be the first time in HD……I was REALLY impressed with the HD graphics of New Super Mario Bros U….

  • discuss

So besides another skin for €20, what do i get extra?

    • A SNES Day Off

      The levels are re-designed.

      • Zombie Boy

And another character, which will make the game different again.

      • not redesigned. They’re all brand spanking new

      • Ice Climbers

Not to mention the 100 second time limit on every level.

  • A SNES Day Off

I think the point Iwata was making is that if you already own NSMB-2 as a digital copy, then this new Luigi game will be downloaded as content within that original Mario game. It’s an easy guess that when you then play NSMB-2, you’ll have the option to start in either Mario or Luigi mode.

When Iwata was describing this, the animation clearly placed Luigi U ‘into’ the NSMB-2 logo.

So if you purchase a physical copy of either game, then that will just be a standalone experience πŸ™‚

    • Ice Climbers

I think you mean NSMBU, not NSMB2. Also, he means that if you have NSMBU, either digitally or physically, you can download this DLC from the eShop, with a standalone physical copy of the DLC being available as well.

  • Nolan ArchLord

How about a standalone eShop version? $30 is a great price.

    • Adam Fox

its $19.99 for standalone E-Shop version….plus its released almost two months earlier πŸ™‚

      • Nolan ArchLord

Are you sure? I thought that was the DLC price if someone owned SMBU already. I’d be really happy if it was the standalone price and I could play it without having to own SMBU.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

The DLC is $20, while the standalone retail price is $30. The article did mention the digital version of a standalone but don’t see the point in it if most only need the dlc.

  • Jimmy D. Fugate

I want to get this but Rayman, Splinter Cell, WW HD and others are all releasing around this time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jack5221

Even though I already have NSMBU, and could just get the DLC for 20 bucks, Im spending an extra 10 getting the CD instead. The box art pure awesome and the green case makes it collectible πŸ™‚

  • Damn it Nintendo. Only you could make me pay extra money for a box.

    • Jon

I don’t think it is just the box though, I am pretty sure the DLC will use the stuff from the original game where if you just get the box, you won’t need to own the original game to play it and it will be cheaper overall if you don’t get the first one.

  • I hope this was not Nintendo’s trump card! So all they do is remove the red character and replace him with the green one and start a whole bunch of Luigi games and they hope to stretch this out like Mario? Shame on Nintendo.

    • Jimmy D. Fugate

Nintendo’s trump card is their partnership with SEGA. Sonic Lost Worlds, Mario and Sonic at the 2014 Olympics and Yakuza HD Collection.

    • Quicksilver88

They have totally newly designed levels with gameplay tweaked to suit Luigis play style……this is not just a character change. For those of us that love 2D side scrolling playform games this is an exciting releae, although considering Mario was $60 I was hoping the DLC would be cheaper.

    • Nikko Ybanez

It’s not a system seller. It’s just something fun to add to your collection or to play extra levels if you’re done with NSMBU. I doubt it was meant to ‘save’ the console. They have Pikmin 3, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, W101, Game & Wario and more coming up. That’s what they are expecting you to look forward to the most. Besides, if they expected it to be one of their best games, wouldn’t they make it more expensive like their other games? Basically, what i’m saying is that Nintendo is making downloadable content, and they’re being nice by selling a solid copy as well, which they don’t have to do. This downloadable content is not a ‘trump card’, and I have no idea why you think so.

    • jay

why are you posting in the “BABY GEAMEZ” section?

    • Adam Fox

and yet all the Call of Duty games are is just weapon and map swaps…..

      • I don’t like Call of Duty because it is first person, I like 3rd person.

  • Metroid 33slayer

The big green cross over bros section completely ruins the boxart, it is a shame.

  • Case is cool, but not worth 10 bucks πŸ™

    • Zombie Boy

I think of it more as “If my Wii U bricks, then at least I can play the game on my next one without having to pay to download it again”…

      • hrm. true, but I think Nintendo could be understanding. Prolly not, but let’s just cross our fingers :3

        • Zombie Boy

That’s my only problem with downloading software – losing it all if your system conks out. It’s not so bad with VC games at a few pounds each, but most new games cost between fifty – sixty quid each. I’d much rather own the hard copies and be safe πŸ™‚

          • I have mine saved on my USB drive, so I think it’ll let me use them as long as my NNID is logged in. You can log into a wii u using an existing NNID, so hopefully they’ll tie purchases and profiles soon

          • Ice Climbers

Keep in mind that digital purchases are automatically registered in Club Nintendo, assuming you have linked the eShop with your account. However, I don’t think this DLC will be covered by that.

          • Zombie Boy

Nintendo have already confirmed to us that if your Wii U bricks then you will lose your downloads, as they are linked to your console, not your account. They may have changed that policy, by now though.

          • Ice Climbers

It’s linked with your Club Nintendo account, not your Network ID. Club Nintendo acts as a proof of purchase and may be able to get your downloads back. However, with DLC such as this, I don’t think you will be able to register it with Club Nintendo.

    • Adam Fox

I am against Digital Game Distribution…..physical media all the way for me….say in 20 years, Nintendo shuts down the current Nintendo Network or stops supporting the Wii U in 10 years where you can’t even download retail games off of it…..used game stores will still be able to sell the disk……think about when games like “Defiance” that are online only have servers shut down where the game is nothing but a beer coaster……set your beer on top of it and pop in some Combat on Atari 2600 which is STILL playable….

      • All the games on my Wii U can be played without the internet. Even the ones I downloaded. I see your point though

  • Linskarmo

I think I’ll get the downloadable version, but I’ll wait to see how good it is first.

  • Hugh Quinn

DLC Done right, release a standalone version, over 100 new courses and 4 new playable characters, and this is nintendo’s first attempt at any Big DLC

    EA, Take some notes.

    • Kirzan

Mario levels are the same crap as Call of Duty maps. Actually, it’s probably so much easier to make mario levels because you don’t have spawns and balancing to worry about.

DLC done right? It’s a fucking re-skin and more of the same maps. It’s Capcom and Activision mixed together.

      • Hugh Quinn

nope, the levels are redone to fit luigi’s style.

all the levels are brand new, go and watch the last ND’S to understand

  • Adrian

I hope this will bundle with NSMBU at some point, because I still don’t have that game.

  • HJ 612

Gee it would make sense for me to get the downloadable version on Mario Bros U. But I seriously wouldn’t mind having the Luigi U stand alone version on my Wii U game collection.

  • scarlet

So the DLC that will be available on the Nintendo E shop will be available on June 20th right? But the standalone version will be available on August 25th? So is it true that already owning the game and purchasing the DLC on the Nintendo E shop is a + because you can get it sooner? Or do both the DLC and standalone version come out on the same day? I’m confused. πŸ˜›

  • Includes a character that can’t even take damage from enemies?
What kind of casual world do we live in, seriously?

    • Adam Fox

that character is meant for younger/inexperienced kids that want to play with their older sibling or a parent………not only that, to me its not much different than the FPS games that allow you to regain energy by ‘hiding’…give your “modern FPS” player a game like “GoldenEye” on N64 with a life-bar….see how long they last when they realize they can’t hide to regain their health

  • WarioForever

  • GeekDaddy

  • Adecentboy777

Hmm, another Mario game. Nintendo U should give us more special games and not just some Bros clone.

  • andrΓ©

i hope the luigi game has better level designs. and harder bosses.
