Masahiro Sakurai recently posted a screenshot from Super Smash Bros for 3DS on Miiverse. Not a whole lot to work with here, but from the looks of things it appears to be some type of single player mode. Maybe along the lines of Melee’s Adventure mode.

I hope they add Melee’s adventure mode, I much prefer that over the subspace emissary, Melee was a good game, I hope they take more stuff from Melee than Brawl.

    • I remember hearing somewhere that there won’t be a story.. Not sure if that means there won’t be an adventure mode.

      • It is true.Not probably,but 100% sure and true.

      • Sdudyoy

He actually said on this post.

“Pic of the day. Where am I……??
To be clear, the new Super Smash Bros. games do not feature a story mode like The Subspace Emissary.”

        • Something wacky, like millions of stuff around the player,or maybe…you need to find an exit to escape.

      • Levi Johansen

If I remember correctly, the later clarified this to be about a “story” in single-player.

There will be a single-player mode with a progressional campaign, but there is no story to bind it together, like the short clips in Brawl showing of the characters working together.

        In other words:
        – Adventure Mode = Yes.
        – Cutscenes = No.

        I could be mistaken though…

        • Spookoyo

They could still have the mini cutscenes that were shown in melee, but not to the extent of Subspace Emissary.

          • Sdudyoy

Yeah, they didn’t say there wouldn’t be sentences they just said there wouldn’t be a story.

          • Levi Johansen

Pretty sure the director said that since they used the cutscenes as trailers for E3, that they would not make any new ones and simply have the single-player mode be without cutscenes.

Doesn’t bother me much, I rarely play single-player.

          • Spookoyo

I think Sakurai was responding to the huge cutscenes he’s made for Brawl. Melee’s cutscenes were made with the game engine on the same stage and lasted less than 10 seconds to introduce the stage/situation, but Brawl’s cutscenes were full motion videos that were very ambitious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKHQXuXE8qc

    • Nookling

I loved watching the cutscenes but I believe that they can put them in as unlock able movies unrelated to a story. I also loved Adventure Mode I hope they make one that is changing when you play it. Kind of like Brawls classic but closer to Melees adventure… You know what I’m saying?

      • Sdudyoy

I liked the cutscenes but I think the Subspace emissary was to long, I liked Melee’s classic mode because it was short enough to play over and over again, but yeah I think I see what your saying, and I could see how that would work.

  • For some reason, the Mario sprite looks similar to Mario&Luigi:Dream Team(Team Bros.)But I really want to see a mode like this different from the others.Who knows?Maybe there is still someone in that game, just watching Mario…Just kidding!

  • John Kinsley

F1RST!!!!!1111!!11!!!11!!111!!! ND MY RTICLES AR BUTTER.

  • LevenThumps

Looks interesting, but I hope the single player mode isn’t limited to 3DS version only.

    • Relick

I highly doubt that it will be 3DS only.

    • Sdudyoy

No, I don’t think it will, I have a feeling both versions will have similar amount of content.

      • DarkYoshi

Expect some limited content on the 3DS. Also, the stages will be different as the Wii U will have console title stages and the 3DS handheld.

        • Sdudyoy

I said they would have a similar amount of content not the same content, I do think the 3DS will have less content but I have a feeling if they add adventure mode it will be on both consoles.

          • DragonSilths

Nope. 3DS version holds back the Wii U version. Wii U version isn’t going to have much more content at all then the 3DS version.

          • DarkYoshi

I don’t know how you’re so sure. Right now we don’t have much info, link and source please?

          • DragonSilths

Sakurai himself said so? He said they weren’t even going to do a Wii U version of Smash Bros, he said they thought the only way to innovate Smash Bros was to make it on a handheld. Then later decided to do a Wii U version. if they were to max out the Wii U 25GB disc it would rape the 3DS version which was what Nintendo considered the main real version. Why would they want to kill the 3DS version? Wii U version will be the same just in HD and with different stages and trophies. Who knows, might be like MH3U where you can send your data back and forth between the two.

    • DragonSilths

Both games are the same, except for stages and trophies.

  • matt

Graphics look as good as wii wow…

  • The Clockwork Being

Yeah I love the Subspace Emissary but I also did love the Melee one.

What I would love for Sakurai to do is to make the adventure mode feel like a unique one per franchise. Like challenges for each characters, Bosses at the end that come from those franchises. With Bosses in the game that would mark the return of Boss Battle which I’m sure everyone loved.

But keep in mind that this is Sakurai’s franchise, you know the one he created. I trust him fully him what he is doing and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Oh but still Masked Man, Isaac and Phosphora for Smash Bros!!!

    • Ryan Michael Riñon Nillo

either that or have a stage where you’re flying through the air with Thanatos and Phosphora wailing on each other in the back ground and then on the stage!

    • Kirbyomega

Why not have it so different franchises play in the world’s of different franchises? Imagine Fox fighting Marx, or Toon Link fighting Eggman or something like that

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

This will be a new adventure mode because i never saw a place like this

    • Mario

      Me neither.

      • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

        Thank You

    • Josiah Parsons

I can’t wait to see that place and those textures in HD…

      • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

        Can be

      • Pikachief

unless 3DS and Wii U got different Adventure Modes, which in my opinion, would be really cool and would make me feel better about owning both lol

  • John Kinsley

    Wii u is doumed.

  • Yousif Alromaithi

You remember guys when I said last year that Nintendo does not want to go back to what Melee and Brawl had. One had Adventure and the other had Subspace Emissary. Nintendo wants to evolve so all their games will not be similar to their past entries. I mean what common ground did Galaxy, 64 and Sunshine shared except a 3D platform. What I meant that all played differently than the other. Nintendo wants to expand the Smash Bros series much like what Sakurai is trying to do. Nintendo does not want to end up like EA or COD making the same exact game all over again Nintendo wants a fresh experience for their fans. I expect Nintendo to do a good job in Smash Bros much like what 3D world did.

  • Antar Rodríguez

i wanted the story to be like brawl, with some vids of the characters interacting with one and other, but i know Sakurai wont dissapoint with a new story mode

  • Ryushi

I think that on this screen shot, even though it could be along the lines of Melee Adventure mode, that Sakurai specifically stated in the post that it shouldn’t be taken along the lines of the Subspace mode.

  • lilmc01

This would be one of the greatest announcements ever!

    • Trirulian

By IREM, like I remember them! Oh wait! no I dont!

    • alex toschi

You just reawakened a feeling of dread and fear I have not had since playing Claws Encounter of the Furred Kind. Bravo!

      • lilmc01

That 30 minutes spent making this was not for nothing.

    • DragonSilths

Never heard of that before in my 18+ years of gaming.

  • Mario

Ah ha! So there will be a story mode! It’s just going to be different then the one in brawl!

    • DragonSilths

They never said there wouldn’t be a story mode…They just said NO CUTSCENES. Namco Bandai was brought in TO DO JUST THE STORY MODE lol.

      • Mario

  • Justin Carlson

I hope the ‘single’ player mode is also a multiplayer co-op mode. My kids and I loved playing the Sub Space Emissary together.

  • Kevin Wickham

it looks like lost woods for lozoot3d

  • ShinyLatios

SHULK FOR SSB4 USES THE POWER OF THE MANODO.im playing xenoblades atm bearly got it 3 days ago 😀

    • DarkYoshi

Shulk would be cool for Super Smash Bros, but maybe they want the main character of Monoliths X instead?

  • DragonSilths

It will be similar to Adventure mode, but at the same time it will be its own thing. Each Smash Bros will have its own story mode.

  • I’d have to put myself in the group of people that doesn’t play Smash Bros for its singleplayer content, lol

  • Old School

    N64 graphics?

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

HELP WANTED: Cast for new Fan-Made Smash Bros. Movie

  • Saul Rivera

Not sure if I said this here already but this looks more like a level editor to me

  • William Cole

The Subspace Emissary was much more fun, especially with the 2P mechanic added. All it really was, was a Smash Bros. version of Kirby with a cruddy story line and good cutscenes.

I believe they should have done another subspace with actual worlds from actual games but only modified to fit new stages. Adventure mode was boring. Same thing every time. “ooh here’s a koopa and then some yoshis!” Oh no, watch out for those Links that come out of nowhere, and and run, run, run from those stupid F-Zero cars!

With all due respect, this is just an effort to reduce development time. I respect Sakurai so much, even I don’t know the guy. The games are great but adventure mode should be more adventurous. For people who don’t have siblings Smash Bros. gets boring even with online you’re still fighting 3 other people on a stage. I want variety! Sakurai knew that the subspace cutscenes would eventually make it to youtube so I don’t count that as a reason for not doing it again.
