In the next issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine, it looks like very specific details for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be revealed. It should be mentioned that this list contains some spoilers surrounding how gameplay works, so if you want to go into the game fresh when you get it, you should probably avoid reading this list.

  • Stage 3-3 Frantic Field is set with a hurricane and small tornadoes as obstacles
  • There is a forest stage afterward with fire due to lightning from the previous stage
  • There are tag barrels featured from previous games
  • Multiple ways to solve each level are available
  • There are three secret levels per world
  • Time attack is making its return
  • Players can upload times and full replays to show friends
  • World 4 is made up entirely of underwater levels

Overall, some of the new things look pretty interesting and we’re eager to get our hands on the title when it releases on February 21 here in North America.

  • Lil J Moore

I wish they bring back the tag system. just playing as DK is a let down.

    • RockieOllie

This and King K. Rool are the 2 minor gripes i have with the game. Still gonna buy it though.

    • darkcreap

Agreed. You could only play as other character if you were in multiplayer, which was not nice.

    • Javier Smith

Yes. I wish I could play just as Diddy by myself, and I wish Donkey Kong had something that made him special as well.

But I’m sure it will still be a great game!

    • Leo

The Retro team never explained why they abandoned the original ideas of DKC. The tag-team is an essential part of the series and they totally ruined it by making Diddy a simple attachment.

    • That guy who hates Spike

I disagree. I enjoy playing as DK. Tag team felt weird to me. Especially because I played Returns first.

  • Lil J Moore

    Also Hooray to underwater levels

  • AAAkabob

“Players can upload times and full replays to show friends”
    Biggest news by far.

  • Laud

“Players can upload times and full replays to show friends”

    • Flawless Victory

They should implement this in more games.

      • Laud

        I agree.

Replays are awesome, I always save my SSBB replays just to watch them again later.

        • rp17

SSB4 needs to have the ability to save replays longer than 2 minutes. The best matches where almost always the long ones! And I know it could be hacked, but still…

          • Ryushi

            SSBB was hacked.
And for the better. It’s called Project M.

      • darkcreap

      • Shota

mario kart 8 has it too called mario kart tv. but only records highlights or something.

      • Drunken Reggie

We are looking into this. More details underway.

    • darkcreap

      Incredible feature!!!

    • Drunken Reggie

      Anything for our great fans.

    • nin-10-doughfan

    • kevin nun—-

      I’m sorry.. Is this sarcasm?

      • Laud

It’s great news that we can upload replays for other people to see. That kind of stuff is cool, especially if you own a capture card like me.

    • Elitepwnsface

Makes me wonder if they are going the route of helping friends in most of their games.

      • darkcreap

I think that is cool. Donkey Kong games have usually been a bit hard as platformers, both in the SNES and the Wii, so it is cool that they provide this feature so people discover tricks and solutions.

  • darkcreap

“World 4 is made up entirely of underwater levels”

    • Blue Hernandez

      But monkeys can’t breath underwater!?

      • darkcreap

It’s not because of that, it is because I hate underwater levels. You are so defenseless… 🙁 . I remember the octopuses chasing me in the Mario games. And the fish :(.

Except if Enguarde makes an appearence. Then they’d better pray their best.

        • Shota

well donkey kong can’t stay long in water. there will be gauge of how long you stay in water. but like in sonic 2d games if go to the bubble your gauge will refill

      • 00EpicGamer00

Actually, if you look at any screenshots or videos of Donkey Kong in an underwater level, there’s a small oxygen gauge next to his profile/health (whatever you’d like to call it.)

    • Nostalgic_Chaos

I totally agree. I sort of dislike underwater levels in platform games. I’m sure we’ve all got bad stories and memories with past Mario games lol.
However, now that I am older, I tend to like and appreciate the challenge of underwater levels more now (for whatever reason). I guess after having played so many different games over the years, you develop patience, which is what these underwater levels are all based around. Patience. The underwater levels in Mario 3D World are actually fun. I look forward to and embrace the challenges that they have set up for us in DKTF as well.

Underwater levels are harder on purpose. The creators are trying to push you and test your skills.

      • darkcreap

Yes, I guess it is that. I usually play platformers in a rush. It is like I run for my life. Many times it is like that. 😀

    • Javier Smith

Underwater levels so far look great in this game though. I always liked them in the original DKC.

    • Stephen

You. Get out of here. Now. Never return. Never ever ever

Did you even PLAY the originals on SNES? Are you a TRUE DIE-HARD FAN?

Okay well anyway, now that that’s over with.

      • darkcreap

I played the originals on SNES, with friends. I am a fan, but man, I can’t get those spinning octupuses chasing me out of my mind!!!

        • Stephen

hehe we shall see how the levels go in Tropical Freeze. Every new bit of info I hear gets me even more excited. One month, one week!

  • CaesarGood

Donkey Kong, game of the year…

  • LevenThumps

World 4 will be all underwater levels…

And people complained how hard the Donkey Kong Wii game was.

  • RyuNoHadouken

this game is gonna suck so bad….i bet it doesnt sell more than 100,000 copies

    • Javier Smith

Yes, because the previous one only sold 6 million copies or so.

      Makes sense.

      • RyuNoHadouken

on a system that had 70 million plus in circulation…do the math fuck-tard!!!!

        • Javier Smith

3D World sales are past 1 million already, with an install base of a little under 5 million.

NSMBU has sold 3 and a half million since launch. Lifetime sales will be fairly high for this game.

And there’s no need for name-calling, friend.

          • RyuNoHadouken

you’re right…i apologize…i just wanted to sound like an overly hormonal teenager…but yeah, Mario is leagues ahead of DK in popularity…cant really compare the two and besides, theres nothing else to buy but Mario on Wii U right now

          • Guest

            true, true.

          • Javier Smith

You’re right that Mario is much more popular…here’s hoping you’re wrong about those sales numbers though.

            : )

  • Justin Carlson

Please have a ‘no so hard’ difficulty mode. The Wii game was too hard for someone who is no longer a teenager with unlimited time to replay levels. There comes a point when it’s no longer fun to keep retrying.

  • Daniel

Am I the only one who really doesnt care about this game?.. to me its just looks like a copy and paste of new super mario bros U. with different images uploaded and slightly different mechanics. One side scroller is enough if you ask me…. people need to stop Ooooooing and ahhhhing over every decision nintendo makes. this game is clearly a bad one.

    • Javier Smith

I agree in a sense. I at least wish it would push the hardware like the original DKC pushed the SNES.

Could you imagine if this game looked as good as Trine 2? That’s what I want Nintendo to do, surprise us.

Some of the best games that are now adored came completely out of left field: Wind Waker, Majora’s Mask, Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion. Games that we didn’t know we wanted at the time but now love. Seems like many of these new releases are safe bets instead.

Also, I would really like a successor to DK64. I just want to jump around in the jungle as Diddy Kong, man!

      • Daniel

They need to surprise us man. Thats all i want, a good surprise from nintendo.

All they do now is release tads of informations every few days and watch everyone melt over it! i just dont understand.

Remember super mario 64 bro? that reinvented gaming. I really would like to see them innovate like that once again. While super mario 3d world is a fantastic game… I still think they could have done something more interesting with mario. But thats just me.

    • darkcreap

Sorry, but no. I am familiar with both Super Mario (2D and 3D franchises) and DKC games and they have nothing to do. They never had. Not in the SNES era and not now. They are platformers, but that is where the similarities stop. The philosophy is absolutely different.

      • Daniel

Yeah and can we all agree new super mario bros u is the best platformer? Do we really need another one. I honestly don’t see any sort of appealing quality to this game that would make me go out and buy it when I already have NSMBU.

  • David Byrad

I’ve been reading the comments here about how hard the DKC Wii game was… I found it quite easy, never had to replay a level any more than 5 times. IDK but I personally think that they should go back to the “two playable characters at once, one health per character and you can switch between characters” thing.

This new 4 health total thing makes the game WAY too easy, and I was really angry that I needed a second player to play as Diddy on the Wii game. But the Wii game was very fun and had amazing gameplay. /end rant

    • Kholby

I think many people don’t have the same amount of patience. Dying 4 or 5 times in a level makes many people quit. That’s what people mean by it being too hard.

I scream and yell and die a million times in DKCR, but I love that, so I keep going. Some people just can’t take it, man.

This game is gonna rock though.

    • darkcreap

Strangely enough, I played the SNES games and found them way easier than the DKC of Wii. The difficulty curve is way steeper.

    • LevenThumps

Did you play the game to 100% completion, which includes the KONG letters, the puzzle pieces, and the time trial. These things added a lot more to the game, and made it very difficult. I still found the game challenging when I wasn’t looking for these items, but to each his own opinion.

  • jrob23

Sadly, this game won’t be enough to push Daniel Gonzalez to buy a Wii U. Nope, there just isn’t enough. Only TW101, Pikmin 3, SM3DW, DKTF to offer. He’ll wait for some Smash Brothers. Of course, when that does come out he will find an excuse then as well…’my PS3 library is too vast, not enough time’ but continue to justify coming on a Nintendo site and pretend he is a fan, so he can continuously talk down about a console he doesn’t own. Where is ole Daniel btw?

    • Javier Smith

Why does it matter what Daniel Gonzalez does with his money/time?

I salute the guy for being honest. It’s funny how he has gained notoriety on this site just for saying what he thinks.

Still a pretty funny comment though.

      • jrob23

lol, it just rubs me the wrong way that every time there is a discussion about the merits of owning and playing a Wii U, he usually can be found talking about why he doesn’t feel compelled to buy one and conveniently the only game that might sway him is many months away. If you don’t own a Wii U or appreciate the games already on it, you probably never will. So it’s hard to care what he says about it. Stay on your PS3 sites or 3ds sites. Why waste yours and my time posting drivel?
I guess I am allowing it to bother me, and shame on me for that, but when all your posts are troll like, yet you claim to like Nintendo, it doesn’t add up and it pisses me off.
If I go on a PS Vita site, not owning one, not planning to, but saying it sucks now and when it comes out with The Last of Us sequel I will buy it, wouldn’t that sound stupid? Wouldn’t you not care about my opinions and label me a troll from that point forward? And if every post defends Microsoft and Nintendo and I go out of my way to defend PS Vita naysayers, wouldn’t that seem at odds with my claim to love Sony?
anyway, he has been absent for awhile so maybe I should just enjoy it while it lasts lol!

        • Rinslowe

I agree the guy is on the pessimistic side of things regarding Wii U. Trust me I’ve had my fair share of discussions with the guy myself…
But there’s no point in letting it bother you mate… for obvious reasons. First one being it’ll just sidetrack your own reason for coming to Wii U Daily.
But tbh, talking about people better going somewhere else to comment is not a good thing, again obviously because you wouldn’t want to start some commentators feeling more entitled than others to visit Wii U Daily based on their gaming preferences. That just plays into the hands of all the internet trolls and anti Nintendo fanboys out there.
Lol, here I am going on about something that doesn’t really matter in the big scheme of things.

          • jrob23

            well said

  • FilipiCn

Im a big fan of DK Country and Nintendo. It is a really good game with fantastic graphics a awessome soundtrack. Rare did a great jod. But when I look to Tropical Freeze it looks like a Disney game. in the original DKC you could feel the snow, the water, the forest, the temples. Hey Nintendo, try to repeat the receipt of DKC again!!!

  • Leo

Too bad that they ignored the original tag-team on single player AGAIN. Is it that hard to copy the original SNES series?

  • starwars360

Cannot wait for this game so much. I loved original DKC series and DKC Returns. This one will be epic. We all know Retro Studios knowing how making epic games.

Retro Studios is one of god game developers in world!!!

  • TheGamerGeek128

“Stage 3-3 Frantic Field is set with a hurricane and small tornadoes as obstacles”
    Well, that IS pretty specific.

  • Lusunup

So you can upload time!!!? I knew it! Bring that to smash 4 Sakurai!

  • Rinslowe

I’m sure DKC TF will be a fun platformer. Day One for me.

  • gamerinexile

“Players can upload times and full replays to show friends”

But… how is that even possible if my controller doesn’t have a “share” button?

    • RyuNoHadouken

      nice 🙂

  • Agent721

I will be preordering this shortly!

I’m counting the days for this title to come out!!!!

  • Forbsz

All I want to do is ride a rhino and ride on a swordfish please!

  • Ryushi

I’m actually more happy for the Time attack mode to be honest.

  • ZeldaFan83

This is great news about uploading replays. They should have this feature available for New Super Mario Bros. U as you can already save replays but just can’t upload them. They should make an update for that. Anyway great to hear their expanding Miiverse capabilities!

  • Mario 1983

First big release of the year, more to come. Patience.

    can not wait!

I preordered mine already !!! l just can’t wait for this awesome game to come to my wii U, I’m counting the days.
