Nintendo announced today that Netflix is now available in Nintendo TVii. There is nothing to update; Netflix will automatically appear as an option when appropriate. According to the Wii U facebook page:

Netflix has arrived on Nintendo TVii! Now you can find even more of your favorite TV shows and movies right from your Wii U GamePad. You don’t need to make any update to your profile – Netflix will automatically appear as a viewing option as long as the program is supported by their streaming service.

While I was never impressed with Nintendo TVii, the addition of Netflix will definitely have me checking it out again. Do you use Nintendo TVii regularly? Will having Netflix as a viewing option influence your usage? Let us know in the comments below.

Will this work for me even though I don’t get any kind of cable/satellite/local channels?

    • Sidney Majurie

Only if you have Netflix. It needs a digital service to consolidate and program for.

    • Saul Rivera

You know I don’t have any cable down here on my TV…I just added a cable provider as if I had their service and can at least follow sports scores and stats on the gamepad instead of having to check online every now and than…but of course you can’t actually watch it..

  • Colin Kells-Murphy

nice addition, though I will only come back to Nintendo tvii once dvr functionality is actually put into place

  • bizzy gie

Love Netflix, but I just don’t see the need for this considering it would be much faster to just pull it up from the home menu rather than open up TVii to open it.

Edit: Wait a minute. I can now suspend full software and watch full movies and t.v. shows while simultaneously running a game in the background. Gotcha Nintendo.

    • paddle008

No you cannot, it just closes whatever was running and deletes any unsaved progress without even asking, it just says “Nintendo TVii will now close and Netflix will open.” It’s only concerned about itself.

    • routerbad

If you choose to use netflix, it closes what you had suspended and opens Netflix, kind of a bummer.

  • Tecpedz94

Using the gamepad to watch videos is def gonna make it much easier.

    • Crillan

You could already watch Netflix on the gamepad…

  • Fuzunga

I don’t really see the point of using this with Netflix. However, I will say the the Netflix app on the Wii U has a fantastic interace.

    • RonaldRayguns

I don’t really see a point of using it at all, it’s pretty lame, even lamer than the PS4 controlers share button.

      • uPadWatcher

It’s either that or you don’t watch movies.

        • Bill Ginzburg Bronson

          its called downloading illegally 😀

      • Easter_egg27

The share button of PS4 is lame?
Your comment is lame, not this app or the Share button

        • RonaldRayguns

          Phfsht!! Haha!

          • Easter_egg27

I am imagining how you work:
            It´s playstation?
            It´s lame.

          • RonaldRayguns

I like Playstation and Nintendo, I have a Wii U and am going to get a PS4.

    • I thought that TVii ran like the browser and eShop, which means that you don’t have to close your game for netflix.

    • MichelChartrand

While I like the interface, I still am annoyed that the gamepad has to remain on at all times when using Netflix. Total battery killer if not plugged in.

      • Bill Ginzburg Bronson

yeah i wish if there was a screen standby button on the controller :S
maybe they should make a qick tap of the power button turns the screen on the wii u controller off

  • Zelly Jeffers

I don’t use Nintendo TVii at all. It looks really neat but I ditched cable TV years ago. I do use Netflix often though. I’ll have to check it out and see how it’s implemented.

    • you can use it on antenna TV too?

      • Zelly Jeffers

It’s been hit and miss picking up TV that way where I am in New Orleans.

  • AAAkabob

I actually think this is great, being able to pause my game, turn on Netflix watch house of cards and go back to my paused game.

    • RyuNoHadouken

why would you wanna leave your disc spinning like that? just stop it and come back to it

  • uPadWatcher

Patience have finally paid off. It’s great to see Netflix being added to the Nintendo TVii roster. All they need now is TiVo and DVR (cable/digital satellite) connectivity and it’s mission accomplished.

  • mikeybruises

Leave a message…Tags are availble now too!

  • mikeybruises

You can comment on live TV shows too as well today. Surprise this was missed. They have what they call “moments”–snapshots of the show. They even have polls you participate in about whats going to happen or what you think should happen.

  • D.M.T

We don’t even have Nintendo TVii in Europe. What the fuck Nintendo? My cable sucks so i want this shit

    • Sidney Majurie

You do realize Nintendo TVii just consolidates your programming and you’ll need cable service and Netflix and/ or Hulu to get the most out of TVii right?

    • I thought this was the decision of the Europe Governments and not the decision of Nintendo. I remember reading how it was felt by European governments that TVii was misleading because it did not provide the actual TV service but just interacted with it.

      • bouncemw

lol, if you call this a government.
Europe is splitted. Too many different laws in each country and too many languages for one “european” provider.
Here in Germany sadly, such nice things like lovefilm/netflix are much too expensive either it would be too much streamvolume for the most people internet-speed.

    • paddle008

You do know you can’t actually watch TV on TVii.

    • Saul Rivera

Nintendo TVii is like an interactive tv guide where you can also post comments if what you’re watching supports it…

Now…even though you can’t actually watch TV on it…I do follow sports on the gamepad without having to watch it on TV

  • Adrian

so that’s why Nintendo Tvii wasn’t showing my netflix before. Haha!

  • trainerblack

Great keep up the updates. i don’t necessary use tvii, but there’s noting wrong with more option.

  • Newness

I was relatively excited for TVii an then when it finally arrived it was a major letdown. Ill give it another shot now that it actually has Netflix support added but now I’m skeptical since they’ve already disappointed me once.

    • kenny Johnson

I’m waiting for Tivo support. I don’t have Cable and use Antenna through my Tivo. So at this point TVii is useless for me — because I can’t actually access anything I watch.

      • Newness

Yeah I think you have to have cable to get the most out of this service and with so many of us going in other directions the full value of TVii may rarely be experienced

  • Rafael Saldana

It also got an update that says TV tag so you can choose what programs are supported with TV tag, I’ve tried it many times I’m just hoping Netflix gets some sort of TV tag feature even if it’s not live tv tag

  • RyuNoHadouken

Nintendo Tvii is weak sauce anyway

    • uPadWatcher

Nintendo TVii was never a weak sauce. It’s just an app for your cable/satellite viewing experience as well as interacting with other viewers.

  • Johny

dont care… cant access TVii … not in my country

    • Kirzan

Same lol. Well, I don’t really know, but… Every time I boot TVii it infinitely loads and I have to reboot. So I guess this is Nintendo’s way of saying: “No.”.

  • Offens1

My only hope that’s is finaly comming to the netherlands.
    TVii is’nt possible here yet.
But lobby’s here are powerfull in a bad way.

    • blancogocycling

it really is a shame it doesn’t work!

  • I use TVii for live stats during my NBA games…really nice…idk what else it does.

  • Zombie_Andrew

If only Nintendo Tvii was in the UK. If it is, Virgin Media’s Tivo service better be available!

  • Tvii is still in the beggining phases. I thinks its great for people who watch tv and for a traditional family setting. I love my wii u it does so much. I dont feel limited gameplay controls

  • Wayne Beck

Can’t say I use TVii all that much at the moment, but that is mostly because I don’t watch a lot of live TV. Adding Netflix will definitely see me using it more, but what I’m really waiting for is HBOGo ShowtimeAnytime and MaxGo.

  • Chiwawa

sooo, you can play a game, lauch netflix, and still be on your game?? I dont get it…

  • tvii is pretty lame. It works better as a mobile app rather than have the console running just to use it.

  • Colin Parks

Apart from tvii does not work still!

  • JVAN63

I have Netflix, Amazon and Hulu+, but I do not have cable TV. TVii is worthless in this case, since it seems to hinge on your cable TV provider and area being entered. I want to be able to enter a title, have it search the services I’ve given it account information for, then tell me which ones have it. The actual cable TV part being required is stupid. It’s 2013 Nintendo! Some people only stream and don’t have cable!

  • Crillan

I love using TVii when I watch Psych every week and also for NFL games. Being able to see live pictures taken from the show and comment on them has proven to be pretty fun. They even add polls and show tweets from the actors if they do it during the show.

  • Imperial Lobster

Australia still doesn’t have TVii >:/

  • wober2

would love it if it did have tv tag in netflix and hulu content. Would be better then live content.
