When Super Mario 3D World was announced at E3 earlier this year, many fans of the Mario Galaxy series were upset that the new Mario title destined for the Wii U wasn’t from the Galaxy series. In a recent interview, Miyamoto has stated that the new game is intended to bridge the gap between Nintendo’s 2D and 3D Mario titles. “Yes, with the Mario games you have the 2D side-scrolling games and you have the Mario Galaxy games, which are the 3D titles. People tend to prefer one of those over the other. What we tried to do with Super Mario 3D Land, and what we’re trying to do with Super Mario 3D World is to create a type of three-dimensional Mario game that bridges that gap. We’re trying to do that more with Super Mario 3D World, in particular with the gyro controls, and to try and do that in a way that will enable fans of both to really enjoy playing Mario.” It’s interesting to see Miyamoto acknowledge that among Mario fans, there are those that prefer 2D titles and those that prefer 3D titles. Hopefully after Super Mario 3D World has been released later this year on November 22nd, we’ll see a Galaxy game teased from Nintendo for fans who want to continue that series on the Wii U. local_offer Nintendo Shigeru Miyamoto super mario 3d world wii u stars Further Reading Switch vs Wii U game case size comparison Miyamoto dismisses the Wii U as a “nece 6 reasons to grab a Nintendo Switch before March 6 reasons to skip the Nintendo Switch for now Nintendo Switch Amazon Pre-Order Watch the Nintendo Switch reveal live! Arthur Jarret To all mario fans: Please stop asking for Mario Galaxy 3. Mario series fans who’ve been around before the wii era would rather have an original idea – a progression of the series similar to what was seen in Mario Galaxy compared to Mario Sunshine, or Sunshine compared to Mario 64. Justin Rowan Galaxy has the potential for some crazy innovative ideas though. The gravity in that game allows for some interesting ideas. Just my thoughts. Also Ive been playing mario since he was jumping barrels =) Derian D’Intino But I think two games is enough for exploring those concepts. Don’t get me wrong, it would be absolutely amazing on the Wii U, but I think it had a great run with two games and kept to the Wii generation. Wii U should show off that it’s actually capable of going to the next level and do something beyond anything that they’ve done. Like how Galaxy moved beyond Sunshine and 64. me y not have both? a new galaxy, and a brand new game………..i’d rather have a galaxy game first, cuz it’ll be like a test…..then afterwards, they can make a brand new game which will use the wiiu’s power to the max Derian D’Intino In a perfect world yes. But this isn’t the Gamecube era anymore where they can just spit out games for the sake of experimenting. No they have to play it safe. which is what they are doing clearly. Mohammad Badir i want an Open World “Super Mario Universe” ^^ Johny and there were 2 iterations of galaxy just because yeah…. they had alot of ideas… but mario franchise evolves all the time.. and this one is one of them Arthur Jarret Mario 64 also still has plenty of untapped potential for crazy innovative ideas… anything could be inside the paintings, including gravity, size and perspective-bending levels. Include mirrors inside each world to jump into and flip the level and you could make some devious platform-based puzzles. Wiiluigi “Also I’ve been playing Mario since he was jumping barrels.” I found this hilarious! OMG I cant stop laughing!! Made my day! Derian D’Intino Yeah I hope Nintendo isn’t confusing the word “Successor” with “Sequel”. We all love the Galaxy games but I’d be more disappointed if it was Mario Galaxy 3 because there should always be a new Mario game per generation or else it’s embarrassing for the Wii U because people will think they are running out of ideas and are unimaginative. Which they are showing isn’t the case for 3D world from the looks of it. Lusunup I agree Mario Galaxy series for me seems boring I got the first one because of the graphics but after playing it for awhile it was boring unlike the Super Mario 64 and mario sunshine those were the day! fireheartis1 Wow you must not have played it very long my friend. When you start getting further into the game the gravity mechanics start to get really fun. Lusunup No no no, nothing can beat the open world of Mario sunshine and 64. I have played part one( passed it and part 2) sure it was fun at times but its replay vaule was very low guess it was the shaking of the remote was litteraly the main mechanic that set set me off. for me I still play mario 64 now as we speak, It’s stil very unique concept think about it, jumping through paintings in the love of your lifes houses who has cameras follow there moves to observe marios moves that was interesting, Galaxy is pretty far out there. andré yes, i am glad that no mario galaxy 3 was made. i like new mario ideas. Ernie Sanguyo I’m happy with anything they made as long it’s Mario. Arthur Jarret Time for Mario teaches typing 2? Nintenjoe82 As a side note, can the other Mario fans stop saying that 3DWorld looks like a poor successor to the Galaxy games without having played it, read a review or known of anyone who has played anything other than the demo. It’s ridiculous to be saying the game won’t be good or imaginative enough when it comes from one of the best development teams in existence. What pisses me off is people’s insistence that it won’t have enough exploration or will be a simple A to B running game despite the fact they’re the same people who want Galaxy 3 which, as a series, was getting very linear anyway. Jacob D. Taylor Thank you. I really, REALLY liked Super Mario Galaxy 2 because it was more linear. Galaxy cannot do what Mario 64 or sunshine did. THOSE were exploration games. Galaxy has had a form of linearity to it the entire time. By definition 3d world will be on par if not excel at exploration than the galaxy games. Arthur Jarret True, galaxy was much more lineair than any of the other 3D games. It gave you set goals and you couldn’t get another goal like you could with 64 and sunshine. pt. 2 even lost the Hub, and all exploration with it. I did love both of the games (as well as the very A-B lineair 3D land), so can’t wait for 3D world. Also: CAT SUIT! All we need now is a Bat-suit and an Arkham themed level for Mario & Peach to play through. Magnus Eriksson True, but I still think that this Mario World 3D is what NSMBU should have been this generation thet would have shown evolution. Because this game is not just a bridge between 2D and 3D its also better than NSMB-series but not as good as the Mario64/Sunshine/Galaxy-series. “It’s interesting to see Miyamoto acknowledge that among Mario fans, there are those that prefer 2D titles and those that prefer 3D titles.” Kind of obvious, and not that interesting really… Nintenjoe82 how do you know it is not as good? Magnus Eriksson Ive played the demo on convention, Ive played Mario 3D land, Ive seen all the videos released. And im an experienced gamer, I can deduce from those premises. The 2d/3d experience delimits some of the best features from 3d games. First of all the ability to explore the enviroments. Time limit delimits that even more, and makes the game more linear. Fun for competitions of course, but it goes on cost of some of the best things in 3d Mario. Large scale enviroments. Shorter levels+timelimit makes the game less epic but more competetive. This will be more of a party game and less grandios. Relatively speaking its highly probably that this game was way cheaper to develope than the different 3d series. But more costly than its 2d relative. Nintenjoe82 so, in summary, you don’t know. 🙂 Cheersaurus Love.Your.Soul Magnus Eriksson How is that? If they didnt change the games mechanics or some of the features Ive already mentioned I got a quite good picture of the game. Never said the game was crap or bad, just that it aint as good as for example Galaxy series. Nintenjoe82 You don’t know because you’ve only played the demo, seen a video and you are equating that to having played the full game and knowing which is ‘better’. It’s from the same team as the Galaxy games. The Galaxy games that had more imagination in their 2D sections than the whole NSMB series. I doubt they’ll not be able to improve upon Galaxy with vastly superior hardware and less of an emphasis on superfluous motion controls. Your points about exploration are invalid unless you didn’t like the so-called ‘better Galaxy series’ because Galaxy 2 had almost no exploration and the levels are considerably larger in 3D world than levels in Galaxy, according to the most recent previews. The previews also claimed that this game has the largest Mario levels ever. I would be surprised if this had less exploration than Galaxy and whether you get to explore with or without a time limit is not a measure of how good a game is either, if anything it adds challenge to the aspect of exploration. Also, your point about this being cheaper to develop than the other 3D games is the most ridiculous. The dynamic camera from fixed camera angles is going to be much harder to get right than just having a chase cam with a few other fixed angle sections. Just the creation, testing and troubleshooting for more detailed HD assets will make the development costs of this game higher than any other in the series. Magnus Eriksson If its not cheaper, then Nintendo stupid. Wii had 100M installbase that could justify a mor costly game than Wii U’s 3.8M Jon cool, I’ve played the demo, lots of fun, I played Mario DS land, I’ve seen all the videos. I am an experienced gamer. The game is not going to be bad, It’ll be great Magnus Eriksson Its not bad. Did I say so? Jon Did I say that you said it’s bad? Arthur Jarret True that, it’s obviously not what those who were waiting for the next big mario adventure were waiting for. But at least it’s a focused design that allows them to make the game in a limited time with a larger team – or so it seems to me. It will at least tide me over until DKCR:TF comes out… which will finally be a platformer with some challenge (which Rayman, Mario/Luigi U and most likely 3D world sorely lack) At least we will most likely get to complain about the lack of story again – so it will have one thing in common with 64, sunshine and galaxy. fireheartis1 LOL dude I’ve played Mario game since way back like 1985-86 somewhere around there, and I love the Mario Galaxy series and would love to play another installment in that series. Arthur Jarret Me too, but I’d rather have a brand new concept. Einar Yes please. I like Galaxy and all, but as I’ve been there for both 64 and Sunshine I would indeed like more change in gameplay, as I didn’t notice any huge differences from Galaxy 1 to 2. Hulkamania I like both mario and sonic… and to be honest… I think this game is looking great, as well as the new Sonic game too. Arthur Jarret I’ve got both on pre-order, of course… I’m just anxious to see what’s next for Mario on the Wii U: We’ll already have 2,5 mario platformers in the first year, so I’m wondering what’s next! Nintenjoe82 Kart racing and brother smashing Arthur Jarret And the olympic wintergames… Link how about “New Super Mario bros 3d 64 galaxy world land” Nah id rather have new ideas too but this idea was already touched on id like a game like 64 but new plot and gameplay mechanics Wiiluigi I completely agree. I want that feeling of loading that new Mario game with excitement! A completely new experience. Where to next though? To the center of the Earth?! With a fireproof rover?! Never mind! Thats Mario Kart 9! LOL! Ony I personally don’t like the main game goal (finish levels from A to B in X time, giving you X score), I love the ‘7 stars for each worlds’, so this game was a bit a disappointment (I didn’t really like Mario Galaxy though). BUT. I looks gorgeous and I sure will enjoy playing at it, like I enjoyed playing Super Mario 3D Land. Now, if this game is a bridge to a new 3D Mario (for Nintendo to train on the HD and stuff like that)… :3333 Ace I totally agree with that! Well said. Lusunup So it’s 2.5 D that makes sense. Ducked This is more 3D then 2.5 D games, so I’d say it’s 2.7 D lol WiiUisgaming I want a 3D game, but please bring me a new idea not a Mario 64, Sunshine or Galaxy, but something similar. I want to find the 120 Stars in the Wii U. SuperBob Bring a new idea yet still have us collect 120 stars. Good job. WiiUisgaming Yeah, Sunshine was a new idea with the 120 Stars and Galaxy (for me) was even a better new idea and had the 120 Stars. Ace What would be really cool is if Nintendo brought out a Mario HD set. Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2. I bet you tons of people would snatch that up! I would. I know it would cost a decent amount of money, but I think it would be well worth it! Fred I’d buy it. Reminds me of when they did Metroid Prime Trilogy it wasn’t that expensive. John Andalora Miyamoto… I prefer one or the other. Not both. Mario I a prefer both actaully. John Andalora I like both. Just not at the same time. Ducked I’m kinda with you on that, we had a 2D side scroller Mario game last year, so why do we need those elements again this year? Daniel Gonzalez Probably quicker to develop. Ducked Yep, there main focus right now in Mario Kart 8 and Supe-never mind you already know what. Mario I’m a gonna be awesome in this game! Daniel Gonzalez Didn’t know they had a character named Manuel in a Mario game. 😛 Mario You know I’m just kidding! i’ll try to change my name on this site. Mario Better? Daniel Gonzalez I know you were kidding. Yes! Much better! 🙂 Mario Woo hoo!! Ducked I’m wondering how many times my friends will die in this game, the share lives features will be interesting Mario I’m a just hope Luigi doesn’t die too easily in this game. He can be a bit of a goofball sometimes. Ducked (the fact that I read what you said in Mario’s voice) Yes I agree, he brags about jumping higher, next thing you know he’s fallen off a cliff Mario Ha ha ha!!! devmiles i think this is a lousy explanation for the fact that their inspiration has gone zero. most of these mario games look so much like eachother and aside from the fact that it shines in 1080p mario-u is a very ripped off game also luigi-u doesn’t bring any new to the surface. the 3ds games.. i mean it’s fun but certainly not mindblowing. i want a mario title that is mindblowing and very challenging, looks and feels with greatness. mario 3d worlds will be another good mario game but i doubt the mindblowing factor. fireheartis1 First, I’m not trying to be mean hear, but please learn how to use some punctuation. Second, have you watched the second trailer? Because it doesn’t seem like you have. This is way different than Super Mario 3D Land. The first trailer made it seem so but the second made it look awesome. There is a lot of mind blowing stuff in there. devmiles I’ve seen the trailer and I’ll buy the game for sure. Still there is something on my mind in a rather negative way when i think of nintendo as a whole nowadays. It is hard to exactly capture the main point since i think there are many points of discussion (which i pointed out in earlier posts for discussion) No doubt this will be a very fun game but i feel it’s not going to be on the epic pile. Also there is no reason to attack my writing since i’m not a native and i found a typo in your start off as well. Fred I disagree, I think this game looks mind blowingly fun Aamir Islam Looks good so far! Yobrolo “in particular with the gyro controls,” Nintendo please leave motion control too the past. fireheartis1 Heck no bro when done correctly Motion controls bring a whole new level to the game. Yobrolo Like skyward sword? If thy do same for the new Zelda I will be pissed. Fred Are you kidding? The controls on Skyward Sword were my favorite control scheme of any Zelda Game Yobrolo puling your sword one way and then hitting the other way got boring and repetitive fast. Fred Not to me, I loved it. It was something different from the normal sitting on the couch pushing buttons. Cyberus Maybe it’d be cool if it worked Deadpool U I wouldn’t think so considering motion control made the Wii out sale PS360. Yobrolo Dont mean it is more enjoyable Fred To me it is Cyberus Remember story mode or Mario Super Sluggers in the city part, where you randomly have to trace a shape? Yeah, that doesn’t feel like forced motion controls Fred Sorry I never played Mario Sluggers I hate baseball. However yes there were times when I didn’t like motion controls, but there were other times like Skyward Sword where I loved them Cyberus Skyward Sword might’ve been cool if it worked. “Keep swinging and hope Link wants to swing the same way you do” is not a good gameplay mechanic Fred That’s odd that it didn’t work for you cause he swung the same way as me over 90% of the time. BIG Franky I’d be okay with a sequel in the Galaxy series (perhaps for this generation, it should be called “Super Mario Universe” or something), but I do agree that an original title that would be mroe of a sequel to Mario 64 sounds a little more appealing at this point….something original to the Wii U. Nathan Ostroski Sunshine 2; or some other 3D mario game with an immersive world!!! Not just a bunch of floating planets or islands. Ducked I’m not much for Mario sequels, but I wouldn’t mind a Super Mario Sunshine 2 Daniel Gonzalez Slander. Ducked What? Simon Stevens Mario galaxy 2 had that big fun slide at the top of that tree trunk world and the music was so similar to racing that penguin on mario 64 =D it was so fun, can’t wait for this new game, if it’s anything like 3d land, I’m gonna have a good time ^^ iamserious Next up is a completely open world Mario game bigger than Mario64, Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy combined! 😀 Ducked I don’t see how anyone couldn’t love this game? It’s a 3D 4 player Co-Op Mario game! Cyberus Eh, it’s hardly a 3D Mario game. I’d call it a 2D Mario game set in a 3D World john No… it’s a 3D game… A 2D game set in a 3D world would be New Super Mario Bros. or Donkey Kong Country Returns. This game will let your character move up, down, forward, backward, left, right, and any angle in between, 360 degrees. It’s a 3D game. I’m guessing you mean it’s not the standard 3D game like Mario 64 or Sunshine with big courses that involve a lot of backtracking and pretty much lets you roam around freely. It’s more linear like Galaxy 2, and it does bring in elements that are usually used only in 2D games like a time limit and the two-hit deaths (varying on what kind of power-ups you have). But it’s still a 100% 3D game. Ducked It’s not that 2D Fred I’d like to see a Super Mario Galaxy Trilogy for Wii U!!! Think Metriod (as in yes this is a possibility because they’ve done it before). Joey Many fans upset that’s not part of Mario Galaxy series, I never got upset over any Mario games, as i have not finished playing Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2 i got so many games to complete. Justagamer I want this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hurry nov 22! We need you Link So we have a Wii U 2d Mario and a 2.5D Mario, so will there be a third full 3D Mario? 3 types of Mario?! =Half life 3 confirmed for Wii U!!! Miles “Tails” Prower Mario Galaxy is nice, but 3D World seems more interesting. 🙂 in my opinion. The True Gamer I want a sunshine 2! Madmagican Now, does this mean Nintendo’s pushing for Mario to become just one type of platformer or are we going to continue to get both 2D and 3D platformers but with lesser differences? Kevin Malone As someone who still can’t stop playing the SNES Mario games, and who never bought the newer ones but doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with them, my opinion is yay for trying something else again. Also, yay for playable Peach and floating like in Mario 2. john There was nothing wrong with the gameplay of the 2D Mario games. The ironic thing about the “New” super Mario games, and the point that they’re missing, is that the old ones offered more innovation and newness in each installment than any of the new ones. That’s what the 3D games up to Galaxy did so right. Like compare Mario 1 to Mario 3. Compare Super Mario Sunshine to Super Mario Galaxy. Now compare NSMBW to NSMB2. It seems like the “New” games just want to squeeze in as much of the old things as they can, and they focus so much on it that they forget to do lots of new things. I think Super Mario Galaxy 3 is precisely what we don’t need from the next Mario game. Super Mario Galaxy was great, but there was still a lot of potential. That’s why we have Super Mario Galaxy 2. If you keep the same theme, even something as epic as space, for three games in a row it gets stale and deteriorates. Then there was Mario 3D land. A really fun little handheld game that again took Mario in a new direction. It was a pretty awesome jump in the right direction, but the problem was it was short and left a lot of unused potential. And that’s why we have 3D world! It’s building off what Mario 3D land was, but it’s packing a huge amount of content into it, adding brand new ideas and reshaping the Mario series just as Super Mario 64 did when the series first went 3D. Magnus Eriksson Well said! Arthur Jarret Regarding retreads: I’m just hoping for Wart, that flying carpet guy, that key guardian and Mauser to return one day… I mean, bob-ombs and birdo made it into other mario games, why not them? Regarding the new stuff; I do hope the focus on multiplayer won’t take too much away from the single player offering of 3D world. Mario bros Wii’s levels felt a bit empty on single player… Mario bros. U didn’t have that problem. I’m just a bit anxious as 3D world looks pretty good – but also a bit barren and danger-free… I do like some challenge to my original ideas too 😉 john I mean, I don’t think it’s bad for them to bring back old enemies as a throwback. I’d love to see Yoshi in this one, but that doesn’t seem likely (might have to settle for the Yosh/Dori hybrid). They brought back Chargin’ Chucks, which are nice to see again. Rumor has it the frog suit will be making a comeback as well. Awesome! I’d love to see some Mario 2 characters back as well, especially since we have the original four reunited again. The key is to not just recycle them, but make them seem fresh every game. And even if they do a good job at this, they gotta make sure to put something brand new in there every time as well. GuardiansFan I’m hoping after the Hardware sales boost because of the Zelda HD remake that they remake Super-Mario All-Stars in HD…which likely would not take that long to do from their end. Alex Damman i want a new game, not galaxy. please guys, galaxy has had a good run but it’s time to let it rest. Scott I appreciate the attempt to bridge 2D and 3D, but why not do a 2D Mario that plays like a 3D Mario? Is it because Nintendo are scared to “ruin” 2D Mario? What about the people who think that this 2D-3D bridge has ruined 3D Mario? What about the people who are sick of the linearity and the flagpoles? What about the people who want the open-world playgrounds back? I’m more than fine with 3D World (so no flames please), but I just want to be assured that the 3D Mario I grew up with and love will come back one day. Mario i don’t like that smile of yours. Scott Haha, don’t worry. I’m no troll, if that’s what you’re thinking. 😉 Mario No. I just don’t like that smile. DarkLegacy What’s wrong with smiling? Mario I’m a not saying smiling is bad! Is just that his smile looks a bit… sneaky. DarkLegacy Ok The True Gamer I personally hated 3d land, so I’m hoping this is better Cyberus It’ll be better. The question is whether it’ll content with Galaxy, 64, and Sunshine Rinslowe Can’t wait for this game! wwwarea Honestly, this game looks GOOD as it’s own thing, however, I hope it’s not the new direction of Mario it’s self, like I mean some people would still want to play 3D mario games by them selves, so a game to feel open from Mario 64/sunshine, like taking open 3D ideas from them and embracing it in brand new titles. Super Mario Universe maybe? Same thing with 2D Mario games, making new ideas based on that. Even though, lot’s of the time, too many ideas was re-used like music but it’s still possible. 😛 This series Land/World is the same thing, but I don’t think it’s fair to force that as a direction for all fans though, like replace all game types. Though, it’s nice to make it a new D thing. I’m still hoping they will make 3D Mario games as there own some day, if they make a original new 3D only Mario game (Making Galaxy 3 wouldn’t be enough to me), I would have a lot of faith back in that kind of series. By the way, I don’t see a problem if Galaxy 3 was made as it’s own game, as long if they still make new 3D titles. This game again, yes of course I might get it, it looks pretty good as it’s own kind of thing. 🙂 darkcreap My feeling exactly. Super Mario 3D land and Super Mario 3D World are actually what someone would have initially thought of what was to be 3D Mario. I mean, if you realise, 2D Marios are usually “Go from point A to point B”, where point B most of the times has a flag. 3D Marios, by contrast, have usually been a “get the stars” game which has a completely different feeling. I have only played a little bit of 3D land, but it seems to me that 3D world and 3D land are “go from point A to B” in a 3D scenario. In that sense, it is nice to see Nintendo actually exploring that concept. I had always wondered why they did not explore that previously since it was the most immediate answer. I guess that probably one of the reasons to do that was because the N64 did not have a lot of storage and thus they had to do the star gathering thing so they could reuse the same scenarios and still have a long enough game. Nevertheless, I must also say that, while I think 3D world looks great, I would prefer to see a less conventional Mario like Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy. I don’t need another Galaxy game, even though I totally liked them for their revolutionary concepts like the original use of gravity. I think 3D Marios should try to be more fresh and non-conventional, because the all-squared feeling of 2D Marios feels a little bit boring to me some times. In this sense, I like better the likes Donkey Kong Country and Mario Galaxy/64 because they don’t feel so much square-shaped. Cyberus Let’s take out the precision of 2D Mario and the exploration of 3D Mario, and revolutionize jumping from point A to point B Green Miyamoto seems like a cool guy.
