Users of Nintendo’s social network Miiverse will find an update has been released for both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS apps for the service. First up, a change for all versions has made it so users can now unfollow and follow people directly from their followers page, so you no longer have to open that person’s profile in order to follow or unfollow them.

Secondly, Miiverse will now notify you when you’re in a community that doesn’t allow posting screenshots. A visible icon of a screenshot with an X over it will appear, letting you know that community doesn’t accept screenshots. Before now there was no way to tell where uploading of screenshots had been enabled or disabled.

Finally, the last update applies only to the Wii U version of the app. An icon has been added below video posts to play the high quality version of that video. If there is no high quality version available, the video will play in normal format.

These are all nice changes, but they’re still no where near the list of things we wanted to see Nintendo add to Miiverse. Here’s the original Miiverse post announcing the update for those who are interested.

  • tiny additions… But I hope they add more updates in the future

  • Gameonfool

Can’t wait till we actually have games to talk about on miiverse

  • Donaald

Those should have been there from day one.

    • Gameonfool

Sometimes when you try something new its trial and error

  • Nintenjoe82

I want them to put the counters back on for each community. My theory was they took them down because nothing was doing very well!

    • Sydney Ultrasyd

Right , i forgot that ! It was a very good way to see how games are doing, and spot crappy games 😀 I also like to see the difference in number of users for each continent.

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

Miiverse could be much better indeed. Also the way you have to browse the games is not convenient, and they should have a community for the console itself, or somehing related to Nintendo news in general.

    • Kevin James McAllister

I’d love to see Miiverse-facebook integration, even if it’s as simple as posting select Miiverse posts to Facebook. I’d love the ability to post a screenshot of an accomplishment straight to Facebook.

      • Sydney Ultrasyd

As it is now, Miiverse is, in my opinion, a bit “closed”. It should interact with Twitter and Facebook, as everything does in 2014.

      • Sydney Ultrasyd

But you know you can already post screenshots directly to facebook, right ?

  • Andrés

they need to release Skype for the Wii U instead of this nonsense

    • Skype is owned by Microsoft, so I doubt you’ll be seeing it on any platform aside from Xbox. The only reason the original PSP had it was because that app was released before Skype was purchased by Microsoft.

      • Arthur Jarret

Correct me if I’m wrong, but… didn’t Vita have Skype too?

        • SmashFinale

And the Xbox One has Blu-Ray.
          CONSPIRACY?! Nah.

          • Arthur Jarret

Yeah, exactly – companies can buy each others tech (even though blu-ray isn’t wholly owned by Sony – but by several companies who then formed an interest group to make such deals)

  • RichM

Hope the word got out about Best Buy offering eShop Cards for 20% off February 23-March 1. If you’re in the digital deluxe group, you get an extra 10% back after you use that eShop credit to buy something. I’m planing to buy at least enough to buy MarioKart 8 in May. That means I will get the game for $48 and then I’ll get 480 point which is 20 points shy (which I already have) from another $5 credit. Now THAT’S what I’m talking about!!!

    • Kevin James McAllister

I hadn’t heard that! I might have to stock up on some and use them toward DKTF, MK8, and Smash!

And I love the Digital Deluxe program. I’ve already gotten about 30 bucks worth or so from it!

  • CaesarGood

They do this so it can seem like they have something to do and make it seem like they are doiing something…

  • Ducked

Miiverse is great, but Nintendo needs to add Facebook and Twitter apps, to integrate with Wii U. And Skype, which would make sense since the Wii U has a camera on the gamepad which feels pointless.

    • Antar Rodríguez

I couldnt agee more, since wii u was released ive only used wii u chat like 10 times, nintendo needs to make something to actually use your camera on other ways, facebook and skype would be great but ill like a game or app that actually uses it for something more

      • manowaffles

Skype (being owned by Microsoft) is very unlikely. Though I do agree that more games could make use of the camera. Perhaps when racing in Mario Kart we can see the videos of our friends rather than just the player icon showing place?

        • Ducked

Due to safety reasons, I don’t think they’d do it for Mario Kart. Since a lot of kids play it.

          • manowaffles

That is why I prefaced it with people on your friends list.

          • Arthur Jarret

Nooooooooo – all my friends are ugly!

          • manowaffles

Then make it an option. Or less ugly friends. I’m sure they have other redeeming qualities.

          • Arthur Jarret

Nope, not really…. except their friendship with me, of course.
Another idea is to block the video feeds by parental controls.

          • manowaffles

Agreed. Though that might fall under the existing parental controls already.

          • Ducked

            I have sexy friends!!!

          • Arthur Jarret

            I know, buddy.
It’s a curse to look this sexy, really.

          • Ducked

            Tell me about it..

          • Volfos

But he said all his friends are ugly and then called you buddy…

          • Arthur Jarret

Aaaaah, you saw what I did there 😛

          • Arthur Jarret

Kids should just be unable to go online. It’d solve a lot of safety problems with the internet, the miiverse admins would be able to mellow out and most of the deterrents of online gameplay would disappear.

          • Kevin James McAllister

All they need to do is make the video setting that manowaffles suggested be off by default. Then, when you turn it on, it needs to be verified by whatever parental controls parents have in place. That way nobody has to deal with obnoxious video if they don’t want to, kids are protected from creeps, and the rest of us get the option.

Basically, Nintendo needs to stop “playing it safe” for the sake of kids, when we don’t even get voice chat in Nintendo games. Because you know Mario Kart 8 and Smash won’t have voice chat in-game because they’re worried about an 8 year old hearing curse words. It’s all very silly. They should just allow games to interact with the Wii U’s parental controls, so that parents can control whether or not they hear other players speak in-game.

          • Arthur Jarret

But animal crossing wii had voice chat…
and so does pokemon on 3DS.

          • Ducked

I like your idea, I could play CoD on the PS3 without hearing 7 year olds shout F bombs in my ear.

          • Christian Schoff

This would make FPS games SOOO much better. But how would it be enforced? Parents wouldn’t do that.

          • Arthur Jarret

Well, with the Gamepad camera included with every system, they could have facial recognition software.

There should be a bypass via scanning a passport for the people with a babyface, though.

Maybe a logo on the box: “Your beard must be this tall to play online”

        • Sherlock_for_Wii_U

Skype has appeared on devices like the PSVita, so why can’t there be a Wii U version that Microsoft couldcould just dish out?

          • manowaffles

Some how I think that would take Nintendo approaching Microsoft, and I doubt Nintendo would do such a thing. They don’t ask for 3rd party support, why would they ask for chief rival to have an open door onto their system?

          • Suraj Alexander

Skype had a deal with psvita before microsoft bought skype.

      • Arthur Jarret

Like the 3DS, I’m hoping the inner camera will be ale to be used for Sanity effects on an Eternal Darkness sequel.

It WAS used in Tank, tank, tank – Sonic and sega all stars racing and a bonus in ZombiU, though.

    • Hernan

It would be great but Facebook took over 1 year to release a Facebook App for Windows 8 which has 200 million users. They would never release an official app for a 5.8M user base on Wii U.

      • Ducked

        That’s where Nintendo steps in

    • The Clockwork Being

Facebook, Twitter, Crunchyroll and other apps.

    • Sydney Ultrasyd

Haha, so useless so far that I totally forgot about the built-in camera ! Who uses the video chat app ?
But as Skype is now Microsoft, bye bye Skype.

      • Suraj Alexander

i would be happy with a facebook app that will allow to use the video chat feature facebook has.

  • palomino blue

More games need to start utilizing Miiverse like the way SM3DW does at the end of each level. I love seeing Miiverse stuff in-game.

  • Nathan C.

I wish I could upload “Let’s Play” screenshots from YouTube, but I know why don’t allow it.

  • metalpants

They should take advantage of the Friend List on both Wii U and 3DS by adding a little envelope icon to each friend that when “clicked”, it’ll show a small 200 character text window where you can send a quick invitation to any friend you see on the list and start something from there. It doesn’t even have to have picture or video embedding! Just a quick, straight-to-the-point text message.

I hate having to go through Miiverse, take forever to find the person in the private message menu (it’s so unorganized and feels unfinished) to just tell them that we’re having an online match right that second, and they don’t even get notified until way later -_-. Usually they just miss it altogether.

Imagine how much easier/faster things would be by just sending quick texts to your friends through the Friend List (and each text would be “dumped” on the private message page in Miiverse) and getting a notification from the home button light (so that it doesn’t get in the way of your game like on 360).

Heck, that could even be done in Wii to a certain extent… so I was almost positive they’d have a system based messaging feature on Wii U. Sad that they “downgraded” in that regard…

  • steveb944

I had no idea there were communities with no picture uploading. I haven’t been on there in a while.

    • manowaffles

      Monster Hunter.

  • Sdudyoy

Wait? some community’s don’t have the option to make screenshots?

    • manowaffles

Monster Hunter doesn’t. I don’t know any confirmed reason, but I think it has to do with the online portion.

      • Arthur Jarret

Monster Hunter is too awesome to fit on miiverse!

  • Arthur Jarret

Unlisted change: You can’t add a screenshot of your home screen to messages anymore. So: no more opportunities to make friends jealous with your pile of digital games on the home screen.

  • Carl Fin

Need way larger improvements than this although the Wii U nearly caught the xbone in sales last week. Here’s some nice ideas for the Wii U or simply U as I like to call it.
