Video game analyst Michael Pachter has been critical of Nintendo and the Wii U in the past, to say the least. He followed today’s Wii U preview event and tweeted his thoughts during the show. And judging by those tweets, he sounds pretty optimistic. At one point, he says that the Wii U will “sell out through April at least”. He bases this on his expectation that Nintendo will manufacture 1 million Wii U consoles per month, which would mean Nintendo would ship 7 million consoles through March 2013, according to Pachter. And all of them will sell out, reportedly. He adds that he expects the 30% of the Wii U consoles to be allocated to the US, which would be 300,000 consoles per month.

Wii U boxThe Wii U will ship in two flavors: a $299 “Base” version and a $349 “Deluxe” version. Regarding the price, Pachter said that he “thinks Nintendo is pricing it right” and that Nintendo has “fervent fans who will buy at this price”. He also predicts that the Wii U will see a price cut in 2013.

On the games side, Pachter was equally impressed. He said that third party support for the Wii U was “pretty solid”, and Nintendo titles looked “high quality”. He also believes that Activision’s support of the Wii U with a lot of casual titles (sans Black Ops 2), signals that “they think the Wii U market is casual”.

So far, Pachter seems pretty optimistic judging by those tweets (you can read them here). In addition to the price, Nintendo also revealed that 50 Wii U games will be released during the launch window, which spans through March 2013.

    • DK

      his twitter was obviously hacked.

      • Zomegax

Yeah, that has to be it.

        • ax-el

Mental control maybe, or alcohol and drugs, a perverse clon, maybe it’s Wamichael or some alternative version of him, it sounds strange, can’t be our Michael pachter.

Leave it to Patcher to patch things up. Oh wait it’s only temporary. The water will spray outta the hole in the pipe once again.

      • dubYA

Too bad his name is PACHter…

…And it was such a nice pun too.

  • jman4102

finally patcher is giving in to nintendos awsomeness

    • revolution5268

no he does this all the time, he said something nice about Nintendo then a week or two he trash about the wii u, many people get fool like this.

      • [GHOST]

Most sites only report the negative comments he say though, before this I never heard him say anything positive towards Nintendo.

  • Nookers

    Oh cool.

  • Shulololol

oh…..i still shit on his opinions. this guy is just a fool. he insulted Nintendo Fans. He was a douche.he is a douche and he will stay one

    • revolution5268

he hates Nintendo fans and Nintendo fans hate him.

      • Zeta

        what a nicely rounded relationship

    • liberalagenda

I agree. He can go eat a d*ck for all I care.

This guy insulted N fans, and he is forever on my sh*t list.

      • JumpMan

you have a whole list for that? wow. you must be organized.

  • revolution5268

watch as he goes to say something negative about Nintendo like a week or two, because he always does this.

  • Madmagican

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wii U sold out quickly here in the states since we’re only getting 300,000 a month; I know I’m gonna try to get the deluxe as soon as possible…. just a few months til it’s released, I can practically feel it in my hands!!

  • liberalagenda

    Did hell just freeze over?

    • maddogg

      I think it did!
Either that or he just accepted the fact that Nintendo know something about the Games industry unlike he does!

    • Zeta

      nah just the apocalypse coming.

    • Lugo

Looks like Satan is ice-skating his way to work.

  • NJ

    Huh, look who’s talking !!

  • Nintedward

All we need now is a cure for cancer !!! and the world is perfect , lol .

    • Nintedward

It’s annoying how people will point out the games aimed at a younger audience and brand the console ‘casual’ . You could just as easily point out all the mature games and brand it ‘hardcore’ .

truth is , Nintendo is very smart and has made a console that appeals to absoloutly everyone . Hardcore , casual , young etc etc all the games are there .

The wiiu IS going to be HUGE . 100% . The gamepad has unlimited potential …. not to mention standard control options etc etc.

      • Shulololol

i am so hyped about it….it’s like in the past when i wanted a N64 to christmas ….maaaan. i never got that feeling again. didnt matter whch game it was. playing Mario 64, Zelda, Banjo for the first ttime was a magical experience. Thats why i will always support N. They made childhood even funnier.

        • Britton

I agree. I was thinking back to playing Ocarina of Time… I seriously cannot wait to play Zelda on the WiiU.

        • Nintedward

Agreed , This thing look’s like the real deal . I hate to say this , but just seeing the way COD played multiplayer on 2 different screens is pretty amazing. I would be genuinely interested in playing an FPS with my bro’s one using gamepad , the other the tv . or maybe even a gamepad each πŸ˜€

          • Godie11

That’s one of the best features the WiiU has, now the developers can make co-op games using the gamepad as a different screen for the other player and no the annoying split screen that most of the co-op games of this gen used.

        • AcesHigh

Shulololol, I’m 42 and I’m getting the same feeling as you. LOL! Except the last time I felt it was SNES!! πŸ™‚

And yes, that’s why I love Nintendo as well. They make games that are memorable and stick with you for years. And as Nintendward pointed out, they are supplementing this same approach with more mature games that ARE NOT WATERED down! They are actually on par with their competitors for the first time since, I’d argue, the SNES vs. Genesis days. With every console since then, the experiences of 3rd party games have always been kind of watered down. Think about it – N64, Gamecube, Wii – 3rd party games on other systems have pretty much had the edge vs. their Nintendo versions.

I’ve said this before, as we all have, I think Nintendo has the magic formula with the WiiU. First time since SNES that we get the best of ALL worlds! This console will be hard for the competitors to beat in 2 years… but we all have a great ride in store for us!

      • me

Hard to beat 3 solid, yet different controllers. Gives game developers lots of options.

      • rafael

Yeah, ‘Adventures of Lolo 3’, cute as a bat’s ear…hardcore as hell.

  • Britton

So basically it sounds like he is eating his own words from what he has said in the past. As disliked as he is (especially amongst Nintendo fans), it is always good to hear optimism coming from any game analyst. I will disagree with him on one aspect of this article. I highly doubt nintendo will drop the price of either of these two bundles within 1 year of release. They MIGHT drop the price of the basic package. But unless they start selling the system without a game next year, I do not think they will drop the price of the deluxe package as it is. Either way I will get it at launch as there is on way to know IF the price will drop and I do not want to wait that long to play this beautiful piece of machinary. πŸ™‚

    • Britton

      no way**

      • AcesHigh

Agreed. Yet again he has absolutely no idea of what he’s talking about. If what he says is true – that the system will be sold out until April 2013 “at least” (which I also believe, and amazed he stated), then WHY THE HELL would Nintendo cut the price at ANY time in that same fiscal year when they finally got stock to stay on the shelf more than a day? LOL! I swear I’ve heard kids in gradeschool on these forums make better predictions which make more sense than his.

        Hang it up dude!

  • Nintendonoob

Hellz yeah! The troller got trolled!! You never mess with the big N!!!
    NOOB OUT!!!

  • Macarony64

He is still bad mounthing nintendo he says nintendo cant output the nesesary consoles hope he is wrong again

    • JumpMan

      *he is wrong again

  • Bruno

…because I was waiting on pins and needles to learn more about Pachter’s opinion today. Why don’t we etch his tweets into stone, like the ten commandments? That way, we can always reference his infinite and all-knowing wisdom about the futures sales and success of Nintendo?

  • ThunderBlaze78

Well! Someone is starting to eat his words. Nice.

  • Shankovich

So what made him change his mind??? -___-

    • Macarony64

Even the gaming press was in awe at the news how can he against the current

  • Charmander

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! patcher understands we will do good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Neonridr

wait a sec, is it April Fool’s already? This guy predicted Nintendo’s new system to be a shipwreck and only had bad things to say. Now suddenly it is going to sell like hotcakes and everything looks rosy??

Pachter’s twitter account was clearly hacked by one of us Nintendo fanboys!

  • DannyMann

    fecking hypocrit

  • Bill

Its not about giving into Nintendo awsomeness, or Patcher admitting he was wrong. He always said that it is crucial for Nintendo to price it right. All he is doing now, is saying that they have. Stop hating on him, he is mature enough to evaluate rationally Nintendo Wii U sales.

    • EponaVsCrimsonLoftwing

No, he said they priced it right for Nintendo fans. He said he expects a price drop next year, when the Nintendo fans have all gotten their hands on it and it needs to attract more customers. At least that’s what it looked like to me

    • Draco Breach

At one point, Pachter said the Wii U had to be priced much lower. He lessens the validity of his sincerity or ability to analyze the market with his past comments.

I will say I finally agree with [at least] some of the statements he made [today specifically]. I just won’t hold my breath for his usual skewed view of Nintendo to return.

      • AcesHigh

Agreed Draco. If anything, it is now priced higher (by $100 for premium) than what he “would have liked” to see. And now it’s going to sell out til April, according to him. That’s a flip-flop of Free Willy proportions.

Bill, the guy is a moron. If you track is statements correctly and look at his long history of inaccurate predictions and his actual, real-life emotional trolling of Nintendo and their consumers, you will see that he really isn’t capable of making objective analysis of the market as a whole (of which Nintendo is a part). Basically, him making statements that “Nintendo just doesn’t get it” eliminates all credibility of him being an objective analyst. And his 180 degree stance today in the face of a Nintendo presentation that really didn’t reveal anything new besides release date and a (higher) price and one or two new minor announcements proves that he is not focused nor consistent in his ability to analyze the market.

  • LyingTuna

About time Pachter gts it right! I think he was alluding to this the whole time. He insulted it, then said he’d be giving real thoughts when price/date were announced. Well, there you go. I saw this coming.

    • LyingTuna

      I meant gets, not gts.

  • 111jackful

    So he finally gave in…

  • Draco Breach

Wow, what a one-eighty. He was saying precisely the opposite up until now. I guess somebody finally hit him upside the head and told him his job was to impartially analyze the market?

I’m not impressed, Mr. Pachter. Please explain why $300 and $350 are now perfect when $250 was too much before. Please explain why it will sell 7 million units now when 4 million units by March was highly optimistic.

Did you have a head cold? I know they make you cranky and bitter, but mine typically last about a week. You’ve been suffering one since, at least, first laying eyes on the Wii years ago. …and then only towards Nintendo products.

I’m skeptical of his different tune.

I’ve known for a while he’d have to eat crow; I just don’t know if this is a true sign he’s apologizing and digging in.

    • Nintedward

”Did you have a head cold?” +10

    • AcesHigh

I think he’s finally off the nose candy…

    • Donnaclus

I guess he’s a really big Bayonetta fan or something? That’s the major bomb of this conference, y’know…

  • EponaVsCrimsonLoftwing

It sounds to me like he’s got a sharp tongue with what he says. “Yeah, it’ll sell out….because they’ll make it sell out. Yeah it has third party support….but it’s gonna be all casual again.” I honestly think cod games are casuals, considering how they’re generally played. Maybe say they’re competitive casuals, but still, many people consider games like that hardcore. Seeing games like darksiders 2, ac3, bayonetta 2, the revamped ninja gaiden 3, and codbo2, people will think of it as a much more serious machine than the original Wii. Those are well known hardcore based titles (aside from cod, which still gives that impression), so people will be like, “okay Nintendo, you got my attention” at the very least. When they see the new Zelda (and I really wish they’d go to the dark realism for this cause that style just screams “this is a serious game”) with it’s huge new, triple part dungeons (does that mean 2 items a dungeon :D) and in a sparkling HD, that’ll settle it for the people still questioning. That’s my 2 cents at least

  • Kamon

What if Nintendo hired him to say all those bad things just so he could make Nintendo look better when he says he got proven wrong? *ConspiracyKeanu.jpg*

  • nintendofreak

wow im speechless n wordless n spelledless……well afterall he just wants attention cuz he newed d wiiu was gonna be a succes he throw shit at him ( popularity went up) now dat d wiiu was announced or however u wanna call it he says its gonna be a total success( populartity goes way up cuz he is contradicting himself derefore creating more contoversy making him get more cash) so yeah expect patcher to admit he was wrong cuz when he does his popularity is going to go way up n more cash to him….he is an asshole but a really smart one

  • Shortwood

    Look who’s crawling back… πŸ˜€

  • LazerK

This is getting really annoying.Make up your damn mind Pachter…

  • joe

who gives a fuck what he thinks?

  • Maverick-Hunter

Someone’s check from Sony/Microsoft must have bounced or something lol

  • Christopher

Oh look, the all mighty Pachter crawling back to Nintendo’s feet begging for forgiveness… Screw you Pachter.

  • Wii Uoops!

He is so stupid. Seriously. He hated the Wii U because Nintendo wouldn’t reveal the launch date and price. Now, *GASP!* THEY RELEASED THE PRICE!???!??!?!?!??!?!?!????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!???????????????!??!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dojo

he has no right to make impacts on nintendo all this time hes like wiiu will fail now hes all like holy shit the wiiu is amazing its gunna sell out into 2013 uk wht screw him hes ust another person that critisies if its not on top wiiu ROCK ON i plan to preorder the delux version i gotta lot of convincing to do with my dad

  • Jetty

That’s why Nintendo fans will purchase a cardboard box with “Nintendo” on

  • Wils81

Pachter is impressed with the Wii U’s software line up.

  • NintendoGamer

Well, I respect him a little now.

    • AcesHigh

Actually, I respect him less (if that’s possible). Even though he’s actually on the right track now, he totally flip-flopped with not much that had changed since last week except a more expensive console than he wanted. It just shows that he’s not stable and inconsistent. And most likely highly influenced by external, ingenuine, factors…

  • Skoog510

Gee, Pachter, you sure like to flip flop a lot, are you actually a politician in disguise??

  • Ninty1

Patcher, please do a bit more to be kind to Wii U.

  • swic11

Nintendo is smart for doing this though. If they only ship a certain amount, people will think its “hard to get” which makes them want to impulse buy when they see one at a store. THANKFULLY, I was able to preorder at gamestop today. I threw a $100 down and $20 on top of that for games.

  • Kahhhhyle

Good thing I just got back from preordering mine! WOOT!

  • Chris

sans CoD for casual…CoD is casual.

  • Yamiryuu Zero

And once again, all his previous bashings proved to be wrong (like anybody believed him). Now Nintendo hasn’t shown any openings for Pachter’s attacks, so he had to admit defeat. Let’s hope he learns to shut up now!

  • Alienfish

  • richman

even though he is saying good things about Nintendo now just wait until sony and microsoft announce their next console then he is going to say Nintendo is in trouble and Nintendo is doomed and all that BS don’t believe whatever crap that is coming out of this guy mouth you guys can believe him all you want but he is going to bash Nintendo all over again but I could be wrong though.

  • LyingTuna

    Just Pre-ordered.

    My body is ready.

  • Albinopig

    Bipolar much?

  • EvanescentHero

I literally burst out laughing when I saw the title of this article. Wow, Pachter…just wow.

  • ridley vs. samus

  • rafael

I dont trust Pachter…sometimes it seems like he is trying to manipulate the market to benefit some clients that he might have…some weeks ago he was saying to people to avoid buying nintendo shares…:/ and now he is implicitly saying for people to buy it…

That way some one could have bough when they were low and sell it now when they will possibly go up…cant trust this guy.

  • Kirby

Finally. At least I didn’t have to inhale him. I didn’t want to turn into an ass.

  • Anhell

WTF!!!?? He was saying “the wii U won’t work” and “the Wii U is the next dreamcast” and now he said this!!… Yeah whatever just EAT YOUR WORDS Motherf…..r!!!

  • Hugh Quinn

what he hates the wii u now he likes it now

  • Pikmin

    that doesnt sound like him..

  • AcesHigh

What a moron… I swear this guy is bi-polar. He must finally be on his perscribed medication dosage.

There was NOTHING shown today aside from street date and price that has changed since the last several months of him bashing Nintendo and the WiiU. In fact, the Premium (which prettymuch everyone seems to be electing to get) is more expensive than he predicted. Aside from announcements about Bayonetta, Black Ops II (which everyone knew about already anyway) and a handful of Activision games, there was nothing new at all for him to say, “Oh! well NOW I see the picture.” The games looked like the same excellent quality at E3, they demoed the dual screen just as they had done over the last several months, they explained what WiiU was just has they have done up til now and the 3rd party support was just as strong minus Activision. They really didn’t do anything new. just more of the same …which, don’t get me wrong – is GREAT. I personally haven’t been concerned about how Nintendo has been educating consumers on the WiiU. But there was no magic bullet in this presentation that would really have turned anyone’s opinion around. Maybe strengthened peoples’ resolve to get one and made people even MORe excited to get it. But nothing to make a blathering idiot who said Nintendo “just doesn’t get it” just last week all of a sudden realize that, “Hey, maybe they DO get it.”

He’s just now being forced to eat his words because he was wrong about the 3DSXL (again) and simply can’t afford to continue his tantrum against Nintendo through the WiiU release for fear of being wrong yet again and permanently discrediting his analytics in the eyes of the entire industry. Any idiot can see what we’ve seen and make the same analysis that he just did here. In fact, pretty much everyone here did that months ago.

Welcome to the party jack@$$. Don’t drink your punch cuz we all p@#$d in it. LOL!

  • PKUltima

Okay guys, which one of us is holding him hostage? C’mon I won’t tell. But in all seriousness, I am stunned about what I have just read. This launch just sounds amazing, great games good specs I think (I’m not a tech junkie) AND BEST OF ALL PACHTER EATS HIS WORDS, HA! Well I hope he treads more carefully next time a Nintendo console is announced.

  • somebody

now pachter is in wii u side “stupid”

  • snestendo

    he actually said something smart

  • FlameKiller

one of the many possiblilties of the continuum shift….

Makoto: Micheal Pachter hated the wii u and now… he loves it?
    what the fu…

  • Very Very confused guy

Wait! Michael Pachter being nice to nintendo and the wii u? Never thought it would happen! Also thanks to the guys at wii u daily for great news over the last few day! You guys rock!

  • SteampunkJedi

Are we sure this is Pachter? Maybe it’s that alien pretending to be him I talked about before. πŸ˜‰ If it is Pachter then he has had a huge mood shift, and could be finally seeing the light. Or he’s being completely unexpected to gain attention. Probably that.

  • shadriczo

You see! I was right from the last topic.

    Last topic comment on Pachter:

“{Hey you guys, I bet he’s too scared of a trolling douche-wad to admit that Nintendo is much better than his fancy-pants shows.

-1,000,000 to 1- he goes off ranting his mouth when Nintendo proves their more better that he is, and runs away again showing off.

And remember, he’s in it for the money, not the gaming gratitude of consumers, business makers and stock exchange development.}”

  • Ibiexplorer4

It seems that Pachter’s whistling a different tune…

I think he tweeted through Reggie’s iphone or something. Auto correct spilled some magic potions from zelda in there.

  • Market manipulation (rafael)

    1) Nintendo stocks were down after e3

    2) Pachter says to people to avoid nintendo stock

    3) Pachter and/or his clients buy cheap nintendo stock

    4) Wiiu is released and nintendo stock goes up

    5) Pachter says it is going to sell out through months to encourage buyers of nintendo stock

    6) Pachter and his friends sell their nintendo shares for a higher price them they bought, hence making a profit

ps: these arent facts, just speculation πŸ™‚

    • Purple3DSXL

Speculation or not, I like it. When you put it that way, it all makes sense what he’s doing now…

  • Purple3DSXL

This has actually got me worried. He WASN’T optimistic for the Wii, yet it did better at launch than he expected; he WAS optimistic for the 3DS, but it didn’t do so well at launch and warranted a price cut in the first year; and now he’s optimistic for the Wii U…?

I’m probably flamebait at this point, but I just had to get that out there. I want the Wii U to do extremely well, so maybe Nintendocool is right. Gotta be the magic potion!

  • NinTobias

This is hilarious, but it shows that the Wii U may even have twisted haters…

  • Nko Sekirei

At least hes not being a jack@$$

  • 0soul

Lol, I still think hes a fag no matter what.

  • Nintendude

Funny thing is, in today’s article he is now saying the Wii U is “priced too high”. I bet you someone is paying him to say these kinda bullcrap things.

LOL. How much would some DOOSH pay for one of the deluxe models on Ebay 2 days before Christmas with Overnight Shipping?? XD
