One of the things Nintendo fans have been asking for since Nintendo Network ID released for the Wii U is the ability to merge Nintendo 3DS content with Wii U content, similar to how Sony handles some content between the PS3/PS4 and the PS Vita. While that sort of integration isn’t coming just yet, Nintendo did announce today that an update for the Nintendo 3DS is coming that will allow you to register your Nintendo Network ID on the Nintendo 3DS and any balance you have there will be combined with your Wii U balance.

This balance merger is a step in the right direction for getting a unified account system on the Nintendo 3DS, as you can buy Nintendo eShop Gift Cards and have the funds available in both locations now. Hopefully we’ll see some sort of virtual console crossover soon enough.

What do you think about this news?

    • DragonSilths

Which is good. If you need a pat on the back for doing something in 7 seconds then just gtfo.

  • Best part of the Nintendo Direct for me. This is the first step to that proper Nintendo unified account system fans have been wanting. It can only get better from here on out.

    • Shota

you beat me to it lol i also wanted to say that

    • RockieOllie

Agree’d i’m glad to see this.

  • boynhisblobs

    Finally! how hard was that…

    • Wayne Beck

Just about as hard as integrating Google Play and iTunes.

  • Donaald

Finally some good news from Nintendo

  • Lil J Moore

  • Ooooh. I thought this update was already out. I was so excited. So close…

  • Adrian Brown

    Me after the Direct: 😀

  • Thomas Vienna

Wow, it’s nice to finally see people not in a fit of rage over a Nintendo Direct for once.

I can’t believe it’s finally happening, though! I’ve always wanted Miiverse on my 3DS, so that I can send handwritten messages without being anchored to wherever my console is set-up. I hope Miiverse works for cheaper internet connections that don’t support online play, like the browser and eShop. That way, I can send messages all over campus!

    • This Nintendo Direct was nice because everything was pleasant. There were no “please understands” or “we’re sorry but”. People take internet rage to an extreme, but when you’re constantly announcing delays for games people have been waiting for months, it’s not hard to see why people get so upset.

The Nintendo 3DS has stellar support and some amazing titles coming through February of next year. I’d love to see that level of support transfer to the Wii U.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

What would you like to see besides what has been announced for the Wii U?

        • I’d love to see an RPG available on Wii U. Currently the only thing that comes close is Monster Hunter 3 and that’s not really story driven. People enjoy that game for the gear collection and monster hunting.

Honestly, I’d like to see Nintendo make a deal with Level 5 to do something like Ni No Kuni for Wii U. The closest thing we’re getting to that is Festival of Magic, which is an indie game and it won’t be ready until sometime next year.

          • Justagamer

How about a skyrim type game?

          • The Clockwork Being

Hey Ashley, maybe Retro can rework on Raven’s Blade for the GameCube(canceled) but make it for the Wii U. And plus we are getting X for the Wii U which looks awesome.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

You know, that would be awesome to see it brought back. I don’t think it was that far into development before it was canceled, though. I think at this point, it’s unlikely to see it again. Of course, it’s quite possible to see something like it from Retro in the future. The game kinda reminded me of Skyrim a bit just from screenshots.

          • Eva Amore

Harvest Moon & Starfox. Nuff said.

          • Noah Hood

Yes, Yes, Yes! Ni No Kuni would be perfect for the Wii U. I feel like Nintendo and Studio Ghibli would go together like peanut butter and jelly. They both have a lot of things in common (Creativity-wise). But noooooo it released as a exclusive PS3 title. Bleh.

        • Justagamer

Id like to see a RPG type like skyrim..But can only hope i quess

          • David Horowitz

How about a Fire Emblem game? Fire Emblem Awakening was CRAZY successful!

          • David Horowitz

Oh, and does this all mean that we’ll find Miiverse on 3DS eventually?

          • Justagamer

            That would be cool

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I’d be interested if a Zelda game went Skyrim. To be honest, I can see Zelda becoming even bigger than it was in recent years if it went that direction. Might even bring some of those Skyrim fans over to the Wii U. Nintendo really should experiment with that. They have all the money in the world to give it an attempt.

          • Eva Amore

I like that you guys are trying to think for Zelda’s future but, I don’t think that is a wise step. You can add the characteristics of Skyrim just don’t make Zelda change to much. People need to love the game for what it is.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I’m not saying that it should become a huge Skyrim clone, but I feel that some parts of Skyrim’s gameplay mechanics certainly would work in a Zelda game. I do agree with you that they shouldn’t throw away what made Zelda what it is, but it doesn’t hurt to experiment with something new.

          • Justagamer

I heard the game will be as large as skyrim

      • Cyberus

I agree, last direct announced a lot of great things like the new Kirby game and that 3D World actually wasn’t boring, but there was a lot of

Oh, Donkey Kong was delayed, and we had to give away a Nintendo character’s Smash Bros slot to Sega, we’re sorry

      • Justagamer

What if my username is different on my 3ds? Will I have to reboot my 3ds and change make the id the same as the wii u?

        • Yes. The Nintendo Network ID has to be the same on both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS or you won’t be able to merge balances.

          • Luciano

Can I merge a Brazilian Nintendo Network ID in 3DSXL with my Canadian Nintendo Network ID in Wii U?
They both have the same nickname (User123 and User 123)

          • Justagamer

Oh Cool than i went and rebooted my 3ds to have the same username..Thanks for the clear up

          • Yen

Uh… I hope you don’t have any games bought on the eshop… you know the update isn’t out yet right? The 3DS currently doesn’t have a Nintendo Network ID, the user name is just a nickname for your console. If I understood the direct right, once you get the update you can “create” a Nintendo Network ID for your 3DS, you’re suppose to make THAT the same as the one for your Wii U.

          • Justagamer

No i didn’t have any games on it

      • DragonSilths

Only thing missing was MH4 for North America!!!

      • Justagamer

    • Mr. J

      Three words thank The Lord

  • jjbredesen

What i think? I think this is fantastic, this direct was awesome, and we got to see audrey drake :D, I almost cried when they said 3DS is getting Miiverse 😀 can’t wait for Nov.22 😀

    • revolution

It was great to see Audrey again!

      • jjbredesen

Yeah really cool, that she actualy is in a direct. She was the best editor at IGN and i am happy that she got to work for Nintendo where she belongs 🙂

        • revolution

Me too! I also hope to see Rich George again, wouldn’t it be awesome if Audrey & Rich presented a ND some day? I would love that!

          • jjbredesen

Yeah, since they left IGN sucks :(, but i would be awesome to have them in a ND.

  • YogiGRB

yes finally, no more separate accounts

  • Yousif Alromaithi

    Great update well done Nintendo.

  • revolution

A first good step in the right direction, Nintendo. Now keep it up.

  • blindtiger

What if you could use a 3ds as a wii u controller?

  • bizzy gie

This is good! Good job Nintendo!

  • James Storino

It’s a step in the right direction, but clearly Nintendo is taking baby steps.

  • Madmagican

Also the 3DS is getting Miiverse with the upcoming update… I wonder if it’ll be the same Miiverse as on Wii U or if it’ll be completely separate?

    • DragonSilths

Miiverse on the 3DS will only have communitys on games that are on the 3DS. Just like the Wii U Miiverse will only have communities on Wii U games. Smash Bros will be the only one that’s shared probably.

      • Madmagican

        Works for me

  • Mj78

It is about time. They could have done this from day one. It’s like nintendo don’t really understand the Wii u themselves at times. Maybe wii u was rushed out and that is where it has gone wrong. Well, apart from the name, price, etc

  • Emily Horton

Does this mean that the Nintendo Network ID will not be tied to any one console?

  • WiiU4life

One small step for eShop; one giant leap for Nintendo!

  • Timzel

I don’t get how this whole thing works… And on my original account my miiverse is blocked. Would I be stil able to log in on the 3DS?

  • Nintendude

So any idea when this update is coming?

  • C.S. Bailey

I know I’ll be in the minority in this case, but I kinda like having two separate accounts. I’ll admit, it did suck a few times (this past week is a great example) when I was less than $5 short on my Wii U to pick up a game, but I had $27 on my 3DS, but those are the breaks. I guess it will save me about three minutes, since I’ll be able to put money on the same account instead of having to do it twice.

  • Thomas Vienna

So, I understand that you cannot hook up your 3DS to more than one Wii U. But I have a Wii U and two 3DS’s. Will I be able to hook both 3DS’s with the same Nintendo Network ID as my Wii U?
