The answer to that question is probably no, but that hasn’t stopped Mercedes from teaming up with Nintendo in order to promote the Mercedes GLA, an SUV currently available in Japan. The advertisement features a look at everyone’s favorite Mario brother driving and takes an unexpected turn. It’s funny how Mario is typically portrayed as a somewhat stocky, short Italian guy, yet the guy who climbs out of the car could only be described as a tall American with a bulbous nose.

Either way, according to the promotion Mercedes DLC is scheduled to be offered in Mario Kart 8, allowing drivers to download a free Mercedes GLA piece to drive around the track. That answers the MPAA’s age old question, “You wouldn’t download a car, would you?” with a resounding yes. It’s not likely we’ll see the DLC in America since the particular car model it’s advertising isn’t available here, but one can dream, right?

    ew mercedes? try getting acura!

    • Javy G

Or maybe stick to his Italian roots! Lamborghini!

  • Sims3RealityCentral .

    Wow, I have no words.

  • CommanderBlue

    Interesting, odd but very interesting

  • Docforexit347

lol that is awesome, When i saw that goomba I was like.

  • Justin Carlson

    Mario Kart DLC FTW!

I’m not too excited about driving a Mercedes in MK, but I like that they are already planning DLC.

  • WT Herrod Jr.

    GLA’s coming out here though

I still don’t see the US getting that particular piece of DLC. Sort of surprised they are teaming up with Mercedes, non-Japanese automakers aren’t super popular there although German luxury sells better than American models.

    • lonewolf

Well probably they were approached by Mercedes for that particular reason that non japanese cars are not very popular in Japan.

  • Officer Raichu

Yes I would love to drive one in mk8

  • WT Herrod Jr.

Haha, is that Sam from Supernatural? Dude is huge!

    Realistic Mario, huh?
Let nothing animated be made realistic again.

  • Christian Schoff

    He’s not everyone’s favorite. -_-

    • Tra Allen

Agree I’ve been begging to be able to play with someone else since Super Mario Bros 2. That game had me spoiled

  • The best part about it is that it’s FREE! Take THAT, EA and Microsoft!

  • sharlo galmo

    Yes please…

  • via IGN:”As for the Mercedes GLA DLC, we reached out to Nintendo to see if we’d be seeing it in the west and it looks like the signs are good.

“The announcement this time was made by Mercedes-Benz Japan regarding their collaboration in Japan with NCL, and as for the information relating to the distribution of the GLA kart for MK8 outside Japan, we will be able to announce in the near future,” we were told.”

So maybe we Americans will get it to!

    • WT Herrod Jr.

Rappers will be rapping about their GLA karts, lol

      • You know what car would be great for DLC? it already has hover wheels and boost jets…

Back to the future 2’s deLorean! LOL That would be fun to use!

        • WT Herrod Jr.

Haha, I wonder if you’d leave fire tracks everytime you hit a speed boost

  • Zombie_Andrew

They need to do a deal with Universal Pictures and do a BTTF DLC pack. Imagine the Delorean in anti-grav mode in MK8!

    • Razo_E

When you run for president, I will vote for you.

      • Zombie_Andrew

I’d prefer to run for Nintendo President. If voted in I promise to bring back third party support by any means necessary, set up a new department dedicated to coming up with new IPs and invest in employing a top hip marketing team from London or New York for starters alongside making sure a 3D Mario, Zelda and Metroid are available at launch next console generation.

        • lonewolf

Making some people to think og new ideas doesnt always come up with fresh new interesting ideas (regardles if its games or not). Ideas like that usually come up spontaneously.

  • Lusunup

Am I the only one who find this disturbing?

    • Saul Rivera

I don’t like it either…bringing real life vehicles to Mario kind of ruins the experience…for realistic cars we can play something else =_=

  • WiiUisgaming
    • While this is great news, be better if that best seller was the Wii U deluxe MK8 bundle pack!

  • Zuxs13

This is awesome it’s a great idea. I love the commercial too.

  • greengecko007

Free content is always nice. I’d drive through rainbow road in the Oscar Mayer wiener mobile if they teamed up with Nintendo!

  • Yoshifan3

i hate mercedes, they are junkers. so i will not be getting this dlc if its for the west. they have had problems with their cars for years.

  • Will the3rd

absolutely yes! And it has my favourite word, free, included! 😀

  • SuperUltramagnus

they should real world cars too! like the comaro, Nissan , corvette , ferri, and etc!

  • It’s a bit odd but at least Nintendo is following through with their cross promotion and marketing plan. The commercial is great too.

  • darkcreap

Good for Mario Kart’s promotion. The optimal thing would’ve been to see some Mario Kart 8 images instead of Super Mario Bros images to give a more clear message of Super Mario Kart, it is free advertising for Mario Kart anyway.

If that is what Nintendo meant about licensing their IP I think it is positive as long as they don’t use it too much. An indirect benefit of this is that it reminds the Mario brand outside videogames and might have a positive return effect on Nintendo by increasing their brand-awareness.

  • Guest

I really don’t like the idea of real-life cars in Mario Kart, but that being said, if another country is getting free MK8 DLC you bet I want it.

    • Shota

micheal scott! steve carrel best role!

  • snowsensei

I really don’t like the idea of real-life cars in Mario Kart, but that being said, if another country is getting free extra cars, I totally want them.

    • Nostalgic_Chaos

It’s something new and I’m all for it. This promotion or the use of real cars does not effect Mario Kart in any way, We still have the choice of whatever Kart/Bike/ATV we want to choose, so everyone wins. Makes no difference.

  • Virus6

Nice promotion, but really, REALLY weird. Not sure how I feel with having real cars in Mario Kart though.

  • gerb1977

Everyone is much more sensible so far from this site. There are a few people who are raging hard against even the idea of this. Seems like something my kids will like if it makes it to the west. Also a good idea from Nintendo to do some cross promotion. Seems like marketing is finally starting to take their job seriously. Hopefully Nintendo is plastered everywhere for the next 6 months.

  • Nostalgic_Chaos

This clearly shows potential then for other more important DLC in general. If they can do a Mercedes DLC, then they can easily do DLC for Battle Mode and for extra characters, which I’m pretty sure they will. I think Nintendo are aware that the game could do with some DLC. I’m sure they’re not oblivious to this.
For me, I’ve played the demo, and I was blown away by the game, so much so that I’m not even too bothered about Battle Mode. I’m also more than happy with the character roster. The most important things are good balancing between vehicles and well designed tracks, which this game has.

However, it’s not just about me. I’m more than happy if Nintendo decide to implement DLC, as I know it would make others happy. So with added DLC, we all win.

    • great deku tree

I really hope they do add DLC. it would keep the game fresh over the wii u lifetime. some new items and/or characters from future Mario games would be very good. even the ones we have now that didn’t make it like nabbit or diddy kong.
what I’d like to see as well would be additional tracks. even if they weren’t made into cups but could only be chosen in custom races and multiplayer. I doubt that’ll happen but oh well. I’ll just have to wait and see.

      • Nostalgic_Chaos
        • great deku tree

yeah birdo and dry bowser were the 2 biggest characters I expected to be in because I saw the boards at the side for birdo then there’s the dry dry dunes course.

  • TheWichi

    -Good one!, Mario

  • C4

That’s how the next Mario game should look like.

  • crocodileman94

Waiting for Nintendo to team up with McDonalds, and making Ronald a playable character.

  • haha this must be the funniest advertising from Nintendo in a long time.

  • Gaz

Is that Brandon White??? AKA buffdudes off youtube??

  • LordiMcKill

This at least gives us many a hope of actual Mario Kart DLC in the future.

  • Sean Jarret

OF COURSE we’ll be getting this DLC as a free update too – how else are we gonna play japanese racers online that use it?

  • Guest

Do a Batmobile DLC, and I’m all yours.

  • Zach Cruz

WHOS READY FOR MARIO KART!? Add me and lets race and have fun, dont mind any challenges and like good entertainment! good sense of humors welcome ! add me –> TheCruzKing

  • steveb944

Awesome ad. I hope we get it in the West.

  • dfg

    Just pathetic nintendo…

  • Roman

What an awesome commercial! That’s the kind of stuff they need to advertise Wii U. I guess Mercedes get’s it.

  • LMAO!

  • ACE

come on guys please stop ! nintendo doesnt deserve your money

  • Nintygek

Brilliant move by Nintendo. The internet and media really jumped on this. Way to bring MarioKart 8 on the map. And make some money in the progress!

  • anthony optimo

Can’t wait to launch a turtle shell at this bucket. Miata Life!
