Mario Kart 8 featured NASCAR racer

Nintendo is getting some great promotion for Mario Kart 8 this weekend, as one of the NASCAR race cars will be decked out in Mario Kart 8 artwork. Specifically, the car of driver Matt Kenseth will be outfitted with Mario Kart 8 artwork at the Nationwide Series History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Kenseth’s car, no. 20, is a GameStop sponsored car, which has promoted upcoming video games in the past. Fans who attend the History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway will get a chance to play Mario Kart 8. The festivities are open until 6PM local time today. You can check out some more photos of the event here.

A few months ago at the SXSW festival, Nintendo pulled off one of the greatest video game promos ever, creating a real-world kart race to market Mario Kart 8.

Check out a time lapse video below of the car getting the Mario Kart 8 treatment before the race:

  • Wouldn’t be funny if this car makes it into the the next NASCAR racing game? You know a game that will not come to Nintendo but now has to advertise for a Nintendo Game because it is a part of the game’s theme.

  • Sdudyoy

If a NASCAR driver can advertise Mario on his Car, than you can stop saying Nintendo is to kiddy to play there games.

Whoo, my 1000th post on Disqus.

    • “Sean” jjbredesen

      Congrats ๐Ÿ˜€ I am 44 comments away from 3000 ๐Ÿ˜€

    • matthew garcia

Dude that sounds dumb. U know Nintendo pays him to advertise it right. The driver doesn’t care if the game is for kids or adults as long as he gets paid that big check

      • Sdudyoy

But my point still stands, why do people complain over Nintendo being kiddy, it honestly doesn’t matter.

        • matthew garcia

Well of course it doesn’t matter cuz it’s all based on opinion. Thing is though Nintendo never use to be insulted this much by the gaming media. It’s getting worse

          • Matthew Stapleton

Unfortunately man, your right. I work at Walmart (in Electronics) and talk up all three next ten systems, and I’ve lost count on how many people call the Wii U a worthless kiddy system. And fan boys of the PS4 and X1 are calling it dead already. ITs getting worse, and i don’t think its going to get any better anytime soon.

          • matthew garcia

Yes sir I know what u mean

          • Officer Raichu

no one is giving them a chance to fix their mistakes and prove themselves

          • matthew garcia

They have so much money they don’t need us to allow them. They just need to do it. Whatever necessary. If they have to spend a billion then spend a billion. Spending a billion now to help fix the problem could help them from losing 2 billion in the future

          • Officer Raichu

well theyre to lazy to get off there buts
so i think they need someone or a group to push them towards this

          • matthew garcia

            Well let’s group together

          • Officer Raichu

all shall stand but one will fall

          • Matthew Stapleton

They do need a push in the right direction. And they do have the financial backing to do it. It pains me to say it, but I don’t think Nintendo is going to get much 3rd party support this generation. Wii U and 3DS are, in my opinion going to be known as an Indie powerhouse. With that backing them up, I think Nintendo still has a good go on the Wii U. Especially since they had said that they wanted to revisit a lot of their old franchises. I’m personally hoping for a Stunt Race U.

And Raichu, I thought of Optimus Prime when I read your post lol.

          • Officer Raichu

why ty optimus is my idol
(plus war and fall of cybertron were gold)

          • Matthew Stapleton

Those two games were fantastic, easily a lot better than all the movies to date……with the exception of the original 80’s movie. But my 360 died just before I had a chance to finish Fall of Cybertron. I need to replace my 360 so I can finish it and a couple of other games.

      • Brandon

Plus the driver is sponsered by gamestop.

        • Officer Raichu

that was just perfect for this XD

  • condor87z

    That is great marketing!

    • Greg Lanciotti

yeah but I still doubt it’s going to help the wii u. Are nascar fans going to go out and buy a wii u to play mario kart now? like give me a break. they need to start making commercials.

      • condor87z

Umm they do have commercials. Also at the event they had a place where people can play there games. It should help the wii u, maybe not as much as we’d but it should help sales.

      • iamserious

Some awareness is better than no awareness at all.

        • matthew garcia

Well yeah but if your gonna only put out some awareness at least aim your advertisements in a way where it will be most effective and NASCAR isn’t it

          • Greg Lanciotti

            amen brother

          • Arthur Sataine

And yet this reached all the necessary gaming sources. Strange how things work out, isn’t it?

          • matthew garcia

Actually it doesn’t work out cuz when your trying to reach out to new buyers who aren’t hardcore Nintendo fans you have to reach beyond gaming sources like with more television. Also television that doesn’t involve Disney and cartoon network lol. Your way of thinking won’t help sale more Wii u’s

          • Arthur Sataine

Your poor excuses won’t either. They are putting all the ads where they need to. You’re just looking for things to argue about. EVERYONE knows about Mario Kart 8.

          • matthew garcia

How can everyone know about it when everyone doesn’t even know what the hell a Wii u is

          • Arthur Sataine

We’ve already covered that. Keep up now. Oh forget it, I’m not re-explaining it to you. Enjoy your ignorance, Mr. Garcia. And good day!

          • matthew garcia

Lol u havnt explained anything. Poor sales are poor sales. Your ignorance keeps u in denial. I will have fun with Mario kart but I know when Nintendo is screwing up

      • TCar

Why commercials? TV watching is at an all time low. For myself, I mute commercials on Hulu and never pay attention to them.

    • matthew garcia

Oh great now all the red necks will come out and buy 10 million Wii u’s lol

      • condor87z

On second thought maybe this wasn’t a good idea ๐Ÿ˜›

        • JB

          Too much? Lol

          • Dallas Gooch

            Freaking gold xD

          • Joel Cruz

this is the funniest redneck shit ever

        • matthew garcia

          Ha lol

      • ใงใฏใชใ„็งใฎๅๅ‰ ใ“ใ‚Œใฏ

Only to find out the tracks have right hand turns. ๐Ÿ˜›

        • matthew garcia

Lol yes, it will confuse them

  • Ducked

    New respect for Nascar

  • Jon Turner

Even SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD, ZELDA WW HD, and PIKMIN 3 never received THIS kind of coverage. This MUST be the ticket.

    • MysteryT

      • Shota

        wooooow ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Officer Raichu

well im gonna watch nascar more now
    (from a horse racing fan)

  • FutureFox

Great. Just don’t crash and burn.

  • Thomas Vienna

What does this article have to do with the one about the frame rate and resolution analysis?

    • Yousif Alromaithi

      John likes to trill lol.

  • That’s pretty cool although the music on the video not so much. Perhaps I can pimp my car also with Mario Kart 8 artwork ๐Ÿ˜€

  • darkcreap

Good. Since I am not in the US I don’t have a perception as to how popular is NASCAR racing, but I think this helps Mario Kart. Nintendo should keep “all in” in Marketing for Mario Kart, Smash Bros and other games to give more momentum.

Some months ago Iwata said that there was a threshold of positive momentum given by certain pieces of software that users play for a long time, making word of mouth to start working, especially if the install base grows to a certain point. I think Nintendo is focusing so much on Mario Kart and Smash Bros due to the fact that they are online competitive games, which brings a replay value (basically, you can play endlessly with your friends) that single play experiences don’t have. Furthermore, the social effect of online gaming brings more people to the table. I guess games like Call of Duty, Battlefield and so on rely on the same effect, because it is the kind of game a lot of people buy to play online at home and/or with friends.

  • Nathan C.

Nintendo’s being aggressive with their marketing.

    It’s about time. :/

  • “Sean” jjbredesen

Good! This is just what Nintendo needs to do. I am glad that for once they are doing a great job on the marketing side, and that they are taking MK8 serious.

The future could be really bright if they continue like this ๐Ÿ˜€

  • kevin nun—-

Good marketing, but I still have yet to see a Mario Kart 8 ad. I watch mostly Latino TV shows and go out quite a bit. Nintendo needs to put a huge add on the YouTube homepage to really kick it out, you know, the same way Sony and Microsoft advertises their products.

    • Lilburrito

There have been 6 separate item MK8 ads that have been advertising on T.V, and from what I hear in some theaters. Not to mention the E4 agreement that Nintendo has planned. And now this. I think that this is a HUUUGE step up. Dunno anything about the Latino tv though. :/

      • darkcreap

E4 agreement? You mean E3 agreement maybe? What does that agreement consist in? Is it the tournament they are having at E3?

        • Lilburrito

Yup, so you can see. When Nintendo said they’d be advertising MK8 hard all year. THEY REALLY MEANT IT.

    • i see some in my cable (Dominican Republic).

  • Ryushi

Well… Thanks a lot Nintendo now I’ll be glued to the TV skipping work to watch your sponsored racer win, as I stare into the screen, eyes literally glued to it, trying to find the one and only driver.
    …Praise be Nintendo

  • rp17

Well it’s not the Sprint Cup, but it’s still nice.

  • Geckoblade64

hope he has some blue shells ready

  • rp17

Isn’t this article sorta late? The Nationwide Series History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway was yesterday…

    • Arthur Sataine

Oh no, something was reported on within 24 hours of it happening instead of at that moment in time! THE WORLD IS GOING TO END NOW! THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLIIIIIIIING!

      • rp17

But the article is not written in past tense. That makes it look like it was just copied and pasted from a website that reported this BEFORE the race.

There’s nothing wrong with informing people that this happened after the fact, but some people were commenting they were going to watch the race to try to find the car. Which of course is not possible anymore.

        • Arthur Sataine

Then those didn’t read the article clearly enough.

          • rp17

I guess. I just felt the article could’ve been more clear itself. But I guess most people here don’t know much about NASCAR to start with…

  • steveb944

That was a pretty awesome video. Hopefully he placed well to get more camera time

  • Rinslowe

Talk about a week late to the party, sheesh. Great reporting.
Still, Ninty has done themselves a solid with Kart.

If only they translated that to every first/ second party title in 2014. One can only hope.

    • Donaald

Funny thing is, I sent this tip to this site on friday.

  • Andrew J.E.

    Awesome picture

  • SleepySkullhead

Nintendo advertising a game? Shocking. Advertising it this much? Astonishing! Maybe they’ll realize that ads sell games once MK8 is out.

    • matthew garcia

It’s called being desperate to sell your console. Similar to Microsoft dropping the Kinect on Xbox one to make it cheaper. That was also a desperate move

      • Leo

And your reply is a desperate reply.

        • matthew garcia

Lol sounds like u just made that up cuz your pissed somebody said something bad about Nintendo.

    • Andrew St. Clair

Ads don’t sell games. Branding and titling sells games. Most games sell because someone said, “if you buy this game, you’re a hardcore gamer,” and most gamers, being mindless sheep, believe that person and buy the game.

  • Michael Ocampo

Let’s just hope the driver doesn’t try to spin boost. XD

  • tom

    What? Nintendo advertising?

  • Guest

  • InterTreble

  • Matthew Stapleton

Its just too bad the car will get smashed up in the race. I hope people take plenty of pictures of it beforehand.

  • Derek

    interesting way to advertise

  • Brandon

The racer came in 6th place in the race, if anybody wants to know.

  • felony211662

its crazy cause i went to the bar with my co worker yesterday and this race was on tv and i saw the car i was like ‘ dude i never watch nascar but i’m glad i saw this!’

  • Shota

Hey guys…. tonight my mario kart 8 limited edition will come. 3 days before release ๐Ÿ˜€ same will happen with smash bros and many more

  • Zach Cruz

For those wondering what kind of “paint” job they used.. It is actually a latex printer that prints out the images on get this.. latex which then they apply small amounts of heat to shrink to the car after this process they carefully remove the excess latex with a form of x-acto knife. Pretty cool printers !

  • Haha, awesome!
