Hit up our Madden Forums on the #1 Wii U Forums in the world! As a huge sports fan, Madden has been among my favorite game franchises for as long as I can remember. I’ve played every version of Madden in this millenium and pretty much loved all of them. When I learned the Wii U would leverage the Gamepad for play calling and some other features, I was excited to see a new level of innovation in what has otherwise been a very predictable game evolution. Unfortunately, I was disappointed at Madden’s newest game launch for the first time in over a decade. Disappearing Game Modes In all fairness, the first complaint of Madden 2013 is true for all consoles that carry the title. Three main decisions in the direction of the game were changed… and for the worse: Franchise Mode no longer exists Mini Games no longer exist Career Mode was added, but stinks Franchise Mode Since it was first introduced, Franchise Mode has been my absolute favorite part of the Madden series. It allows you (and your friends) to select teams and control every aspect of your organization for 20+ years as you try to turn your franchise into a dynasty. Each year, EA Sports has improved the Franchise option, and in Madden 2012 it was even closer to perfection. Some of the great features included fantasy draft, free agent signing management, trades/trading blocks/waiver wires, hiring staff and altering coaching strategies, scouting college players, managing stadium upgrades and finances, participating in the NFL draft, signing rookies and filling your roster, altering your depth chart, monitoring progression and optimizing lineups, and the list goes on and on. Franchise mode has unexplainably disappeared from Madden 2013 and it’s an absolute shame. They pass “Play Career” off as being Franchise mode, but it absolutely is not. Mini Games Complete Madden games usually take 30-45 minutes unless you’re playing with 1 or 2 minute quarters, which seems to defeat the purpose of playing in the first place. With Mini Games, Madden offered an arcade style experience that appealed to a different group of people. Whether you only had a limited amount of time to play ball, didn’t have the attention span for a full game, or were hanging out with a handful of people and wanted to share the control a bit more evenly, Madden Mini Games provided this versatility. Mini games are nowhere to be found in Madden 2013, another glaring omission that left many fans devastated. Okay, maybe devastated is a bit harsh, but I still frequently force my 2012 Madden into my system so I can pummel the opposition in Rushing Attack among other mini games. Career Mode EA Sports has passed off “Career Mode” as their new “Franchise”, claiming it combines the best of both worlds. The problem is, it doesn’t. Franchise modes offered a delicious balance of gameplay and management strategy, whereas Career Mode adds a load of tedious and unnecessary tasks that make the game seem bulky, impersonal, and unenjoyable. I would bet EA brings both Franchise and Mini Games back in 2014, and if not, they were simply unable to swallow their pride and admit they were wrong. I admire their effort to take Madden in a new direction, but the experiment failed and they should revert to what previously worked, improving the huge success they had already built and fostered for years. Madden and the GamePad The Gamepad is the key to unlocking the power of the Wii U and simultaneously a new challenge for game developers. It’s something for which they’ve never previously developed, so they’re entering new territory in terms of both conceptual integration and technical integration. In terms of conceptual integration, EA got it at least half right. But the technical integration fell short. The main purpose of the Gamepad was as a screen for picking plays. This makes a lot of sense as players can each pick their plays simultaneously without the opposing player locking their eyes on their opponents’ screen. Simple idea but good idea, unfortunately poorly executed. My two main complaints: The resistive screen on the Wii U Gamepad often failed to register complete presses, freezing up on button selection and requiring additional presses to actually load content. Although “Conventional” style play picking was selected, I was repeatedly forced into either a GameFlow mode or play suggestion mode that I did not want. I want to pick my plays myself. Combined with the less than responsive screen, this frequently resulted in delay of game penalties and wasted timeouts. Only two complaints, but big ones, and ones that undermine the entire purpose of the Gamepad’s play picking existence. The setbacks make the Gamepad an irritation rather than what it should be: a fun and more convenient way to pick your plays privately. In the future, I’d like to see EA add more functionality, such as turning into the wide receiver and locking in on a ball to make a catch, but first they need to get the basics down. Graphics & Gameplay The Wii U might be a new console, and certainly developing for the Gamepad is a new challenge, but you would think that actual gameplay performance would be consistent with other platforms. This was absolutely untrue and I was shocked at how poor graphics and animations performed. The screen was jumpy, frame rate seemed inconsistent, edges were pixelated, and overall I haven’t seen such a poor experience playing Madden since about 2005. While Nintendo retractors would blame the deteriorated graphics on a lackluster CPU, I would put that blame on the shoulders of EA Sports. Plenty of other games with many more simultaneous physics renderings perform quite nicely on the Wii U. For some reason, Madden underachieves in the area of graphical performance and it takes a noticeable hit on the game’s enjoyability. When you’re used to a silky smooth Madden experience it makes a big difference. Those extra frames that seem to disappear can mean the difference between deciding who to throw to, whether or not to spin, how to position your open field tackle, and many more elements. It turns a lot of the skill and strategy into guesswork. And if you think local gameplay is jumpy, don’t even consider playing online. There were a few other gameplay hiccups, and I’m sure with more time under our belt, we’d be able to identify additional bugs. The two big irritations for us were plays in the playbook that had titles but no associated pictures (see above picture), and the missing differentiation between your opponent planning a Kickoff or Onside Kick when you’re picking the formation in which you’d like to receive. The Bottom Line This is the first Madden in over a decade that I simply cannot recommend buying. The loss of Franchise Mode and Mini Games were hugely disappointing, but something most fans could accept as a 1-year hiatus, especially considering the change was industry wide. But when coupled with a Gamepad experience that took away from enjoyment and subpar graphics processing that felt unpolished and incomplete, Madden 2013 on the Wii U is disappointingly miserable compared to its counterparts on XBOX 360 and PS3. If you’re a longtime fan of the Madden series, I’d strongly consider sticking to 2012 and waiting for 2014 (and this is coming from someone who has purchased every Madden since 2003). Newcomers might want to consider picking up Madden 2012 used rather than buying 2013 new. I’m sure the vast majority of people who buy Madden will enjoy playing it, but as one of the most consistently great gaming titles out there, they’ve failed to live up to the standard of excellence they’ve set for themselves with Madden 2013 on the Wii U. Not only does always switch back to GameFlow at random times but you can’t scroll through the playbook with the joysticks; you have to use your fingers to scroll. And when you do that, it thinks you are picking a play instead of just touching the screen to scroll! Thus the gpu is leagues ahead of last Gen consoles. However, until devs learn how to use the gpgpu we will suffer frame rate issues on anything rushed. When it comes to video cards, there are three core features that can make it powerful when exchanging parts. One of course if the GPU which gives it it’s features. Then there is SPEED of the GPU which can make it better or the same as previous generations. Lastly it is the memory. MORE memory does not always equal better! There is a strange balance between FASTER video memory vs. slower but more (typically doubled) memory. Ideally (from my experience), it is better to have a faster GPU above all! This, like having a faster CPU and make up for most other short comings, including lower memory. You can have a newer GPU with newer features be slower than an older one, but the older one can perform better because it is faster or has more shaders! If nothing else, do not be fooled by memory size! As touched on, slower memory at 2GB would be almost equivalent to faster 1GB memory in many cases! Some manufacturers use MORE, slower, older memory to make things look impressive for those who get happy over the “more is better” ideal. Faster memory is preferred, but the Wii U having 2GB could still perform like faster 1GB. Finally, just look at the Wii U’s motherboard, I am not seeing much in the way of power there. There is not much on it and the main features seem to be the CPU/GPUs! That tells me that the system is almost totally relying on those two without much else! Clearly this was to cut costs. So I hope that you know that LATEST does not always mean the greatest. If you have a brand V6 Honda Accord, is that better than my 20 year old Rolls Royce? If you have a brand new 4 cylinder Honda Accord, is that better than a ten year old Accord V6? Victor Nothing you said is necessarily wrong, but to down the gpu of the Wii U at this point is silly especially when considering the CPU it is using. Also you sound like you should know this: the Ram’s speed is not determined by the cpu’s processing power, but rather things like the speed of the edram. Just don’t know how fast that is either. As for the Wii U board…with such limited view we can’t determine anything until some techy breaks it open. The GPU on the Wii U has been praised unlike the CPU. Not sure about speed, but it has to make up for the cpu and the shaders appear fine as shadows and such are better in AC3 and BO2. Donald I did not down the Wii U GPU, I am just advising people to not be fooled by fancy names that’s all. There clearly is a reason Nintendo does not like to give specifics on the specs. We know why they did not with the Wii, so I wonder what the deal is with this? I for one would not buy anything without full disclosure! The SNES had a slower CPU than the Sega Genesis, but the SNES had better graphic capabilities, particularly in it’s color palette and “Mode 7.” That helped the SNES separate itself from the Genesis, but Sega was able to make up for some graphics effects using it’s faster CPU. The one thing they could not do was to make up for the color palette, which back then, was the reason the SNES was #1 in my book. Victor Nintendo has never released full specs for their systems its always been someone else breaking it open. I like for people to use there brain in a way that says: if the cpu is so much worse than last Gen and yet games have better lighting and shadows and shading then the gpu must be just as good as advertised. I like all 3 systems and anyone who wants any of them to fail is a fool. Donald I recall seeing specific specs on the NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube, but not on the Wiis! No one has been able to pin down exactly what the Wii U CPU is yet. We don’t know if it is a PowerPC or a Power7. We don’t know how many cores it has either. All we know is that it is underclocked, not slow, that it is a multi-core, and that it is made by IBM. I know some people like to rub one off at hardcore specs. I personally could care less. What I care about is the finished product I am playing. The Wii “Broadway” processor in the Wii was nothing compared to the Xenon in the 360 or the Cell in the PS3. Yet when you simply upscale first party Wii games (and even a few GameCube games) to 1080p resolution they look as good if not better than any game ‘of it’s kind’ on the PS3 and 360. If you look at SSBB or SSBM on the Dolphin EMU and compare that to Sony All-Stars game, Smash Bros looks better. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 (especially 2) look incredible in 1080p resolution. So do DKCR, Sonic Colors, the Metroid Prime series, and even Rogue Leader for the GameCube. The point is that Nintendo has forgotten more about game development than the best programmers today will ever hope to imagine and they know how to use what ever hardware they have to get the best visuals possible. DerikGotro64 Its a new system and new technology, give them a year. D2K Developers are used to using game engines that are CPU dependent which 360, PS3, and PC are. The Wii U has a GPGPU which means that instead of the CPU doing most of the work, the GPU does most of the work. The Wii U CPU is ‘underclocked’, not weak. As a result, developers that chose to turn down free support from Nintendo to learn how to use it’s processor have punched out craptacular ‘looking’ ports. Games like Assassin’s Creed 3, Black Ops 2, and Tekken Tag 2 look better on the Wii U Developers that actually have a brain and did let Nintendo help them or were smart enough to follow directions (i.e. Ubisoft, Namco, and Activision) have ports that surpass the 360 and PS3. It is a pretty simply concept to understand. If you are making a cake from a box and the instructions say to add one egg, 1 cup of water, and a tablespoon of oil, it doesn’t make sense to get mad at Duncan Hines just because you are used to preparing it differently and the cake comes out wrong because YOU didn’t follow directions. It’s funny how people get amnesia in the most opportune times. Am I the only one experience Deja-Vu here? 7 years ago people were saying the about the PS3……… “The Cell processor sucks, it’s complicated, only 1st party titles look good, the GPU isn’t that impressive, multiplats look like garbage, etc, etc.” Same with the 360. “The Xenon processor sucks. The cores in the CPU are clocked too slow. The games look the same as regular XBOX games, etc, etc.” It wasn’t until games like Fight Night Round 3 and Gears Of War that people actually saw what those systems were actually capable of and then people had the “ah ha!” moment. Sadly enough, even when the Wii U has the “ah ha” game drop that still won’t be enough. People are still gonna whine, complain, piss and moan for no other reason than it being Nintendo. As far as I’m concerned Madden looked horrible this year on all three consoles. That is EA’s fault for being lazy. They didn’t do anything with this game. There really was no excuse for it to look this bad other than sheer laziness. Especially considering that they left out the ‘Infinity’ Engine which and absolutely NOTHING to the gameplay other than comedy of watching your players get up and trip over each other for no apparent reason. The point was to explain that the 360 and PS3 RELY on the CPU rather than the GPU to do most of the work and that the Wii U GPGPU works opposite of that. Donald How do you know? If the PS3 and the 360 both had custome, high power (for their time) GPUs, then what makes you think that those system rely on the GPU alone? GPUs are not new you know. It is up to the programmer how things are used. My CPUs in my PC work faster than my GPU which is a 560 Ti. Just because it’s a GPU does not make it faster automatically. When the Wii was coming out, it was all about THAT controller, but now it’s about this one. At least the Wii controller had uses for it. I was unaware that the Dreamcast’s screen could display and entire game, surf the internet, be a touch screen, interact with the game in profound ways, play movies, allow 9-axis motion control, had a microphone, a gyroscope, a camera, etc. Guess you must have had a special Dreamcast controller. Actually it is all about the controller. The OS is built around it, Miiverse is built around it, Zombiu makes decent use of it, Nintendoland and Rayman Legends allow for some of the freshest multiplayer in years. So name a console that wants it: Wii U, Dreamcast, and rumored 720. ( rumored they are developing for it.) Again you sound like a hater troll. It’s a tablet that doubles as a controller, or a controller that doubles as a tablet in case the Wii U flops people won’t say they wasted their money! When the DC was out, full color LCD’s were pretty expensive so that was not possible. Nintendo stole that controller idea. If Nintendo stole there idea then Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have all stolen ideas off one another for years. There is a reason patents are not typically claimed in this industry…innovative purposes. If I was a paid Nintendo supporter I would have not downed the framerate of certain games nor the cpu. I bought one on Black Friday (Sunday) from Walmart online for pick up. It was in stock and the order went through. Later, they canceled my order claiming it was not in stock. I wrote them and they ignored my concerns. After midnight, the price went back to $60 and they were all in stock again! Walmart is dead wrong! Victor Yes NFL2K sounds great! Your experience with all of the past Madden’s and the fact you’re publishing the review here on Wiiudaily give the review a lot of legitimacy. It’s just sad that EA and other publishers didn’t do a better job on porting and getting creative on the games that give us the 1st impression of the Wii U. And frankly it doesn’t bode well for the future, because if it’s this hard to make a good game that uses the GamePad, what incentive do Dev’s have to keep trying. Even ZombiU which arguably makes the best use of the GamePad so far, has not been generally well received, some people love it but a lot of people don’t. Nintendo needed to hit some home-runs showing off the Asymmetric Gaming innovation. And despite NintendoLand and ZombiU, they failed at achieving that task. D2K Seriously though. outside of Wii Sports what launch titles really showed off the usefulness of the Wii-Mote? I agree that most of the launch titles I have played the GamePad has feel more like a hindrance than anything else (especially Ninja Gaiden) but I didn’t expect any 3rd party to really show any true innovation with the GamePad right off the bat. I’m HOPING that Aliens: Colonial Marines is that game that really shows off what the Wii U GamePad can do. AlienFanatic I’m sorry, but you can’t blame the lack of effort on Nintendo, you just can’t. It’s likely that EA did a quickie port of Madden to capitalize on the lack of sports titles at launch, so they shoveled the project out as fast as they could, regardless of whether or not the final product was any good. Nintendo makes every effort to innovate, while most of the other games make the argument that the entire console market should be homogenized. After all, if the devs don’t make good use of Kinect, the Wii-mote, the PS3 Move, etc., what difference do all these gimmicks make? I’m not advocating FOR homogenization, but I’ll bet my big toe that in six years when we look back at the Wii-U, Nintendo and maybe a handful of 3rd party games will have used the Gamepad effectively, while all of the other titles will be shovelware and/or indistinguishable from the other platforms. Football hasn’t changed, we are playing a game remember and unlike some I honestly can’t stand watching football.. it just makes me fall asleep but playing the game in life or as a video game has been fun. Linskarmo I didn’t expect it to be this bad, but I don’t really like sports games anyway. That’s a bummer, though. majordude I like that you downgraded this review.
