The biggest line in the Nintendo booth during E3 2013 undoubtedly belonged to the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD kiosks, where players and journalists alike waited to get a chance to play the remake of one of the Gamecube’s most beloved games. The graphics have all been redone and though they retain that hand-crafted feel that you get from cell-shading, they look absolutely stunning in HD.

The game handles well and will be a treat for gamers who never got to experience the original on Gamecube, so this is definitely one title every Wii U owner should pick up. Let us know what you think about it in the comments below.

  • pepisho

Im Eager to get it .. never play it B4 !!! Thank You Wii U (hoping they get Link to the Past on Virtual Console ) !!!

    • Elem187

I’m sure they will before this or the 3DS game comes out.

  • Nintedward

I’ve got the Gamecube limited edition version but I’m still buying this. Can’t wait to see what it looks like on my nice big 1080p TV ^_^ and it’s been a while since I played it so I’m sure I will love it all over again.

I’d finished Ocarina about 4 times before I bought it on 3DS and the 3DS version is absolutely incredible and , by far the best version of OOT. So same situation here.

    • It really felt great to revisit that world. So excited to be able to play through it fully once it’s available.

      • Nintedward

Yep. I guess if you’ve already played Windwaker but you’re a bit tighter on cash then it may not be for you. But I sure as heck am getting it on day 1!!!

        • Arthur Jarret

In my case – it’s not so much being short on cash, but rather short on time with all the other games coming out for wii u, 3DS and PS3 around the same time…

I can’t really justify buying a game I already beat dozens of times and know by heart instead of GTA V, rayman legends or even spending time playing one of the 700 games I haven’t beaten yet (I know, I’ve got a problem – hehe).

Edit: ah hell, who cares about justifying game purchases anyway?

      • howling_wolf1334:[

Me too… When i played in NGC I never go through all the side quest, πŸ™ , but now I will do it!!! If it comes with a guide I’ll buy it too!!! Hahaha…

        • Ken Seymour

There will be a hard cover limited edition guide for $40.00, I already pre-purchased, and will never open it lol

    • Elem187

Do we know if its 60fps or 30fps?

      • uPadWatcher

        It’s 60 fps.

        • Elem187

Thanks, was this confirmed by Ninty? I see alot of conflicting reports… I saw it in person, it looks butter smooth, so I want to say its 60fps.

          • Thomas Fitzgibbon

It’s 60fps and in marvellous 1080p. The list also includes Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, Super Smash Bros Wii U, Wonderful 101 and (supposedly) X and Super Mario 3D World.

          • WIIBOY101 GEEEZA

every game u listed is 720p 60 ffs zelda is 1080p and 30ffs

            get dem factz right

          • Elem187

Smash is 1080p/60fps. At least thats what Sakurai told us, unless he is lying?

          • Relick

No its not 60fps its in 30fps but it looks great anyway!

          • Elem187

But is it confirmed by Ninty, or are you basing this on the very very anti-nintendo site, NeoGaf?

          • Relick

No I hate NeoGaf. Also its only anti-nintendo until smash bros comes along, and then it licks nintendo’s arse.

    • I still have the GC version too.. I beat it once but like almost every other Zelda game I always get the urge to play and beat them again. I just completed Link to the Past for like the 8th time in preparation for the 3DS A Link Between Worlds Game coming out this fall.

Games like this should be used for other publishers to take note. Make a great game and the people will not sell or trade it because somewhere down the line they will want to play it again.

      • Nintedward

Precisely how I feel about the Zelda Series. Played them all more than Once except for the NES Zeldas which i’ve played once… The second playthrough of a Zelda game is usualy the funnest cus you notice things you didn’t before and you just speed run through the game and are a whiz at all the combat elements !

I finished Ocarina 3D normal Mode 1.5 times and Master Quest twice… 142 hours πŸ™‚ And before that I had finished it twice on the N64 and Normal Mode and Masterquest on the disc that came with Windwaker Limited edition!

        They have time proof replay-ability.

@Elem , pretty sure its 60 fps. i think it was 60 FPS on the Gamecube also…

        • Forbsz

I will be buying Wind Waker HD day 1 not only have I not played it I have only just played a Legend of Zelda game for the first time about 2 weeks ago when I bought Ocarina of Time on Wii VC!

  • Jon

I got to try all best buy e3 demos except this, thought I got watch it and it looked awesome and i plan on buying it plus the other 3 games I tried πŸ˜€

  • AlThor

Tks for posting this Ashley. Is Ninty still on schedule for October release/exact date hinted at yet?

    • Still coming in October, so far. From what I saw at E3, the port looks to be going well.

  • Mark Thom

    looks really good dam!!!!!

  • howling_wolf1334:[

I already preorder it!!! Hahaha… But I want it now!!! πŸ™‚

  • Elem187

Do we know if its 30fps or 60fps?

    • Shelim Uddin

30fps just like original game but at 1080p

      • Elem187

        Zombie_Andrew says its 60fps @1080p

BTW, the original being in 30fps has no bearing on a complete remake being 60fps… sure if you run it at 60fps in a dolphin emulator it will animate too fast, but when the developer does a remake they can fix the animations to run in 60fps… if this was just a port, I would tend to agree with you that it would just replicate the original in everyway possible to lead to the least amount of work… but this is Nintendo and they tend to really lay on the polish even on small titles.

I’m still looking for confirmation from Nintendo either way.. I saw it in action at Bestbuy and the animations looked really smooth and fast… but I don’t know if thats just the way cel-shading looks in motion. I can tell the difference right away in a regular 3D rendered game.

        • Zombie_Andrew

Think we can all agree whichever the framerate it looks butter-smooth and amazing

        • Shelim Uddin

You make some good points but i still think it will run at 30fps. The only speeded up animation iv seen is when link uses the grappling hook.

          • Elem187

60fps is more than speed of animations, it feels more fluid. At 30fps you can notice slight flickering here and there, and I didn’t see any of that at bestbuy, thats why i’m trying to find someone with some sort of clarification from Nintendo…. I already know the anti-nintendo site, NeoGAF, is convinced its 30fps, but they always assume the worst, even in the face of evidence (lol it took them weeks to admit that NFSMW on Wii U smokes the PS360 versions, even then they used the word “marginally”)

          • Shelim Uddin

Lool there is too many people that hate on Nintendo. 30fps or 60fps the game is still going to be awesome. Nintendo FTW

        • Relick

          Its 30fps, 1080p. Mario Kart is 60fps, 720p and Smash Bros. is 60fps, 1080p.

Nintendo Direct confirmed 1080p for WW, 60fps for MK8 but did not mention the lower resolution for MK8 or lower framerate for WW because people would not be excited to hear it. Smash Bros was confirmed seperately (Sakurai’s twitter I think).

          • Elem187

Until Nintendo confirms, we can’t say either way… Those that are saying its 30fps are basing it on the fact the gamecube was 30fps, which is absurd…. yes when you play the game on dolphin, you ahve to run it in 30fps otherwise the animations would be so fast its unplayable. But the developers have no such limitations as this is a remake and not a port.
And I guess NeoGaf is calling it 30fps, but everything Nintendo at that site is assumed to be the worst no matter what, so not reliable at all.

          • Relick

I didn’t say that its 30fps because the gamecube is 30. I said it was 30 because they didn’t explicitly mention it was 60 (like other games) and from people able to tell the difference at the best buy events.

    • Zombie_Andrew

60fps, Wind Waker, Mario Kart and Smash Bros are all 1080p at 60fops

  • NintendoNoob

This is good for people like me who never owned a GameCube. I’ll be able to experience the greatness of Wind Waker in HD! Thanks Nintendo! πŸ˜€

  • Just goes to show you that Nintendo can still draw a large crowd simply by enhancing one of their own games from many years ago. Most other companies cannot say the same about their games.

    • Nintedward

Check this Idea I had. Like Windwaker HD , they should do one HD remake per year for the life of Wiiu.

EG Y1 – Windwaker HD Y2 – F-zero GX HD with added online and Miiverse Y3 – Super Mario Sunshine HD etc etc.

How great would that be ? all in full overhauled 1080p with new features and improvements!

      • There are a few games from the GC era I would love to see remade in HD and those three are on the list. Now if they could add Luigi’s Mansion that would be awesome. I have the GC disc but have tried to play it on the dolphin emulator and it is not the same.

        • Nintedward

Yeah , I’m not into PC gaming at all really apart from the odd RTS. And you can’t beat the quality of Nintendo’s own remakes.

Luigi’s Mansion would look stunning with the same treatment that WW has had.

          • I wasn’t really either mainly because it was so convenient to just hook up a console to the TV but with the announcements of the XBOX One and the PS4 not retaining any of that compatibility I see little incentive to go to a new platform that will make me use the old platform to keep playing my games. I figured if I am going to switch I may as well go PC gaming and sacrifice an exclusive or two that may be console only.

Fortunately I anticipated this would happen so when I put together a HTPC for my TV last fall I over-spec’d it but still kept it around $350-$400. Then I recently added a Radeon 7970 graphics card to that quad-core HTPC that I got on a Newegg special for about $300 and poof an affordable gaming PC that will play most games at 1080P and 60+FPS. So between that and my Wii U and my 360 I have plenty to game on.

  • uPadWatcher

    One word– LEGENDARY!

  • Nintendofreak

    i want chibirobo

  • gamesplayswill

I think Pacter just had a stroke.

  • D.M.T

    This game is GORGEOUS

  • Joel Dixon

Has this guy ever played Zelda? Everyone knows the skull hammer is the weapon of check for the Hemlock King.

  • Did anyone else hear “I Will Survive” in the background?

  • peeer

All the buzz I had for a chance to re-purchase this game, Nintendo broke it up when they confirmed there won’t be any of the 2 removed dongeons in it… That was the only thing I disliked from that game back then. Not having enough dongeons under the ocean, the game felt too short.

  • Joey

I cannot wait for this game to come out, i never had a gamecube i wish i did but this is great now i get a chance to play Zelda Wind Waker on Wii U. Looking forward to this one.

    • Nothing5555

Well the good thing about not playing it during the GameCube days is the Wii U version will be the definitive version.

  • Nothing5555

As much as I loved Wind Walker on the GameCube, I probably will pass this game up as I have already beat it and they are not adding any new features/story. Plus I still need to beat TP and Skyward Sword >.<.

    • ZakAttack7

what does ‘WW’ stand for, if not wind waker?

      • Baum γ€Œγƒ„γƒͺー」

        Guess that’s a secret to everybody : |

        • ZakAttack7

clearly, he’s already beaten wind waker, but needs to beat wind waker. obviously.

          • Nothing5555

            Opps…meant to say Skyward Sword..

    • ChiwawaBoi

I see no comparison. Isthe leap frog pad capable of 60fps? ….I didnt think so. -.-

  • Re4wii2008

Looks phenomenal (Gamecube Version still looks amazing to this day also) Can’t wait for it in October!

  • Superstick98

    This looks AMAZING!!!! <3

  • Looks very sweet on 1080P, very nice, yet without the missing dungeons I don’t see me getting this game though, as I mentioned in another post I can just as easily play it SD on my Wii or Gamecube. The HD remake with the minor extra’s doesn’t pursue me to buy/play it again. For others who have not played it I would recommend it nonetheless.

  • Linskarmo

I love the splashes. The game looks phenomenal!

  • ChiwawaBoi

I never played WW, so im in for a big treat! πŸ˜€

@Ashley- could you keep us updated on the Art academy app? Im so excited!

  • Wolfa

Well that Helmroc king section is new I don’t remember it in the original game.

  • Zombie_Andrew
  • Joseph Parsons

the art in Wind Waker HD looks so good

  • CyanideInsanity

Does anyone know if it plays at 60fps? Just curious.

    • howling_wolf1334:[

It looks like it does… I dont have any source but by reading the comments below I knew…

      • Elem187

Some people say 60fps, some say 30fps. So far no clarification from Nintendo. I see some hands on websites claiming it is 60fps, some claiming its 30fps.

The reason some say 30fps? Because the original on gamecube and wii was, which is a really stupid assumption because this is a full remake in HD is not a port so the developers have the option of pushing it to 60fps.

When you play this game on dolphin you can set it to 60fps and the animations is so fast its unplayable but for a remake the dev has the option to lock it where ever without scewing up the animations… so thats why I’m not paying attention to anyone who says its 30fps who are basing it on the original being 30fps.

  • Steven Penberthy

    I Wants it

  • iceazeama

its a shame that they didnt add anything new, there isnt really a reason to buy it now. WW was the least of zelda to get an hd remaster too, it should of been the two n64 game. that would have been awesome since they kinda need it.

  • Sol Ridgeway

Does anyone else feel like they went overboard with the lighting and took the game out of the cell shade that made it what it was. I was a basic cutout world and I think they took it out of it’s element.

    • Elem187

No. It looks much better with shadows. The art really pops out at you.

  • Zuzanah

    Looks fantastic, can’t wait πŸ™‚
