Nintendo had faced a lot of criticism for the original “Wii” name, and just as much for the new “Wii U”. The company settled on the “Wii U” name at E3 2011, but for marketing purposes, Nintendo seems to refer to the new console as “Super Wii” in Japan. At least, that’s according to the latest Japanese Wii U TV commercial, which you can find below. It’s likely just a temporary “nickname” aimed at those casual gamers who are still unaware what the Wii U really is. There are still folks out there, both in Japan and the rest of the world, who think the Wii U is a controller add-on to the original Wii.

IKR, why can’t we have a commercial with a classy lady voice talking about the wii U, with classy music, WITH CLASSY BACKGROUNDS. Also, any1 else notice the wii u screen ratio in Japan is different? It looks closer Tia square ._.

        • Ickytang

Most of the content in the video is “squished,” which is why the screen looks more like a square than a 16×9 rectangle. Look at the circle around the Wii U logo on the controller, the analog sticks, the HDTV, etc. – they are all out of proportion. So, the controller is exactly the same dimensions as everywhere else, but for some odd reason the video content is squished.

      so true

    • AKA-Link77

Call me crazy but i thot of this exact name!
Omg i feel like my idea has been stolen!
The name decends from the idea of NES and SNES. Both the nes and wii use the same name in their next gen console so it just makes scence! i explained this to my my mom and even she said: “Oh! like the super nintendo!” PLUS that name gives emphasise that its a new console so there wont be any confusion like how there was/is with 3DS/Wii U!
      geez . . . . i was just about to ask u guys about my name idea too . . . . :{
      “Its a bird!”
      “Its a plane!”
      “Its Super Wii”!!!

      • miageekid3

i think i actually remember that super wii post

  • Ryu No Hadouken

  • Gamechemist8

Haha following the NES and Super NES (SNES)

    • Bicentennial_Pidgeon

It will now be the “swee” to me. SWII.

N minus 10 days. The Nintendomination is coming.

    • Andrew Sheehan

Wow, I said this over a month ago.. on this very website..

OMG, I think i have psychic powers! Get out of my head!

  • Dazz

This is one of these stupid japan tv comical i every see.

    • Amtoj

Well then, if this is stupid, wait till you see all the others. *Wink* This is the most normal commercial they have. 2nd, people giving birth to horses.

  • corbin74

I seriously thought that’s what project cafe would be called. 🙂

  • Kahhhhyle

That might make people think it’s just a soupped up wii. If they just called it wii 2 there would be no confusion, no questions…

  • john

was that worth making and article?

    • Mariokartfann

Look at the comments, then it is TOTALLY worth the reading… LOL 😀

9 DAYS (probably 8 by the time this is seen by others, but whatever right!!!)

  • Nintendo Power (Wii U FTW)

    Super Wii to the rescue

  • rp17

Aha so the Wii U really is to the SNES as the Wii was to the NES. The Wii and the NES were both groundbreaking for videogame consoles. And the SNES and the Wii U are both graphically enhanced and overall better consoles to their respective predecessors. Even the launch titles Super Mario World or NSMBU (the spiritual sequel to SMW) are parallels.

    • dubYA

I like the way you think!

      • NintendoMan :D

I this is true, than there might be a Super GameCube or a Nintendo 128. We can only dream…

    • Dan7el(Wiiu day one purchase)

Genius! And The Super Nes was/is basically my all time favorite console. Now all we need is New Super Metroid and New Earthbound(Do it justice 😀 ).

    • D2K

Very astute synopsis. Nintendo does this on purpose too. For instance the awesome menu music of the GameCube menu screen is just a closed down version of the Famicom disk load screen.

Not only that, the ‘Bulky Drive’ for the N64 was the spiritual successor to the Famicom Disk Drive.

    • NoPUNintendo

If history repeats it self, than the next console, Wii 3 or whatever. Would be like the N64. Then another Gamecube, then another Wii would be born. Of course I doubt it’d go into a cycle like that, but it almost seems that way.

  • Nintedward

I have been playing the crap out of my Wii for the last few months as a final Hurrah. Revisiting all of my wii library before the Super wiiUltima arrives.

It’s starting to settle in now how good the wiiu is going to be. I am sat at my computer now and I could just have the gamepad in my hands playing a variety of games right here.

If anyone adds me on miiverse – prepare yourself for some serious video trolling.

  • xyz478

    The truth has been said!!!!!!!!!
    take that

  • Nintenjoe

Super-Wii is a much better name than Wii U.

I will now only call mine my Swii

    • D2K

I still like UNES (Ultimate or Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System.) Heck I still think Nin tendo Stream would have been awesome.

Maybe they’ll save that name for the next console where cloud gaming will probably be the norm. I already know Nintendo is thinking about it. I keep hearing Iwata say in his Nintendo Direct posts “future consoles” or “future hardware” in reference to stuff like Miiverse and other new Nintendo ventures. I mean, they started development of the Wii U in 2008 so I’m sure the successor to the Wii U is already on the drawing board.

  • Superstick

Translation: Wii U is so awesome!

  • LEGOKid

YOU bets be ready for MY serious video trolling, Nintenward.

    • Nintedward

      Prepare to be Rick rolled!

  • CRT_hater777

Maybe if they actually showed the console, this would change

  • Nintedward

    • Hibill18

The time of the Wii U will soon be here!!

      • Lazara The Last

*In scary orc-voice* “The age of Sony drones and X-bots is over. The time of the Nintendomination has come!”

  • sergiosms

I don’t understand what the person is saying but i can tell this is a way better commercial compared to the NA one

    • Mr. Needlemouse

no way this has an awkward wierd crappy computer voice that annoyed my ears alot and the us commercials are more funny and have half decent music

  • Noah J.L.

and this video is why it’s going to sell more in Japan

  • Linskarmo

    Like the NES / SNES!
@NintenJoe: I’ll call it SWii too!

  • Dan7el(Wiiu day one purchase)

  • ???

  • Madmagican

I like Super Wii, it gives a more defining name to the Wii U and shows off some patterns from the good ol’ days

  • calvinwars

The title misses the most important part: NEW PIKMIN FOOTAGE!

  • Arsonist Monkey

What’s that on my shelf? an Xbox? a Ps3? No, it’s Super Wii!

  • Arsonist Monkey

What’s that on my shelf! an Xbox? a Ps3? No, it’s Super Wii!!!!

    • Arsonist Monkey

      • NintendoMan :D

        lol fail it’s duplicate

  • Kev

This article stinks. I clicked the video expecting a “Super Wii” commercial, but it was clearly just a description for the system. The system is still being marketed as Wii U in Japan.

  • Amherst

Couldn’t help but smirk when I first saw this. I still believe the SNES was the best console. Really wish they had gone with Super Wii as opposed to Wii U.

  • BananaPwnz

Oh i get it! Like the nes, the following console was the SUPER nes. Now the Wii, the next gen being called the SUPER Wii in japan.

  • Kirbymon123

Today on facebook I’m like “9 days until the wii u!” And then my friend’s like “the whaaaaa?” And then my other friend is like “the wii u, y’know, the new controller for the wii,” and i got sooooooo mad.

  • Fuzunga

That was the best commercial I’ve seen.

  • theorangefish

“There are still folks out there, both in Japan and the rest of the world, who think the Wii U is a controller add-on to the original Wii.”

Do you want to ssy Japan does not belong to the real world?

SUPER Wii= Gamecube on steroids on steroids on steroids 😉

  • nice

3 weeks till i can play super mario again… yeah!

  • Lazara The Last

*In scary orc-voice* “The age of Sony drones and X-bots is over. The time of the Nintendomination has come!!”

  • NintendoGMR95

Man” if they called Wii U the Super Wii Here, that would be so beast, but i guess one can always dream right.
Let the Nintendo Domination” BEGIN!!! 😉

  • Sylux

Couldn’t help it, been reading here for several weeks but never posted, here’s the first. Super Wii 😀 if it gets the same 3rd party support as the snes back in the 90’s. I think Nintendo hits the jackpot with the “Super Wii” so far it looks good as it already has more 3rd party support then the Wii and gamecube combined, well almost 🙂 to bad I have to wait at least to 11-30-12 before it launches in Europe 🙁 seemingly it’s also sold out here in preorders, at least in Holland. Anyway from now on I agree, the Wii U will be renamed to “Super Wii” back to the 90’s.

  • Cliff

They don’t say “Super Wii” they say “Super na Wii” which is basically “Wii is Super”. They use super to describe the new Wii U. Hope that helps with the mis-translation
