Feb 12th, 2014

Another week has gone by without substantial releases for the Wii U, so numbers continue to remain about the same. Square Enix released a new Dragon’s Quest title in Japan this week, which saw an impressive 443k sales within the first week, attesting to the popularity of the Dragon’s Quest series there. Another interesting thing to note on the Not Nintendo site is that the PS Vita version of Terraria was released in Japan and seems to be doing well in its first week.

Overall the Wii U appears to be holding its own with the PlayStation 3, which only managed to move 3k more units than the Wii U this week. Of course the Xbox 360 has fallen nearly off the map in Japan and neither the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One are available in Japan just yet. We’re interested in seeing launch numbers for the PlayStation 4 when it launches in Japan in a few week’s time.

Is the caption for that picture; “how much would give me for this unopened Wii U and Nintendoland download?”

    • FoxMulder900

aww lol, I thought the picture was cute – in reality you know that kid is stoked!

      • Simon Stevens

I did too, the excitement when your that age for anything gaming related is through the roof ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Nintenjoe82

yeah I hope so, I’m old and even I left the shop with a huge grin when I picked up my launch Wii U!

  • Simon Stevens

  • Josiah Parsons

Does it come with NL in Japan?

    • Dominicruz

depends on the bundle they are to many bundles

    • Ducked

Nintendo Land, or Dragon Quest, or Wii Party, etc

  • sharlo galmo

next week when Donkey is out, the Wii gonna sell waaay more units…

    • Ducked

I don’t know many people that are going to buy a Wii U for a 2D Donkey Kong game. The game will sell great for people who already own a Wii U, but it won’t move any systems…

      • sharlo galmo

just wait and see, i don’t talk about millions, but it gonna sell.. on youtube and some game sites, i read a lot of peeps who say, now i am gonna buy a WiiU.

        • matthew garcia

Dude besides myself and the people on this forum I dont know anybody else with a wii u. Ps4 just came out and I know many people who own one

        • Ducked

Thirteen people on Youtube “say” they’re buying a Wii U for this game. The thing is people lie…

      • FoxMulder900

My guess is that we will see a small boost in sales for a few weeks, but nothing near what Nintendo needs.

    • matthew garcia

If mario cant I dont see donkey kong doin it

      • sharlo galmo

Mario did it dude, did you know that the wiiu sell around 3 mil, and that happens after mario was release dude. so when someone say Mario didn’t sell system, try again….

DKC Tropical Freeze top Amazon Germanyโ€™s Best-Sellers List

        • matthew garcia

Lol dude everything sales during the holiday season. U could sale shit and it would sale for the holidays. Look at the sales now there crap

  • Sonic the Hedgehog

Thanks WiiUDaily! I actually wanted the Japanese weekly sales record a regular here!

  • Sonic the Hedgehog

Mario Kart 8 and SSB4 better come out soon!

    • matthew garcia

Nintendos problem is that they only have 1 game comin out here and there. They need multiple games comin out at the same time to create variety cuz if your only option this month is donkey kong im sure its gonna be a great game but its not for everybody and not everybody is gonna want it

      • nin-10-doughfan

        i hear ya brother!

      • matthew garcia

Just saw u.s. estimations for the month of january and ps4 was 375000 xbox1 350000 and wii u 60000. Thats for the whole month

        • Wighead

I don’t know where you got those estimates, but I think that the gap between PS4 and XBone is a lot more. I also wouldn’t be suprise if WiiU sold more around 80000 in NA

    • AkaLink77

MK8 is coming in MAY so that narrows down Smash Bros RELEASE DATE.
So it wont be summer or even mid-summer for sure because MK8 will take most of that season…
So it may be between VERY LATE SUMMER and LATE FALL.

  • palomino blue

Software Sells Systems. Start giving Wii U the 3DS treatment, Nintendo.

    • matthew garcia

Not that easy. 3ds actually has 3rd party support

      • palomino blue

Exactly my point. 3rd party support for the 3DS didn’t magically appear. Nintendo needed to put in the time to build those relationships. That doesn’t automatically translate to every system they will make. They need to start treating the Wii U like it can benefit from solid 3rd party titles and not just barely survive on great Nintendo IPs alone.

        • matthew garcia

3rd party support basically tranfered over from ds to 3ds. 3ds had good games early on I just dont think people were willing to give up on ds to make the move to 3ds yet. Now that they have its selling great. For the wii goin to the wii u though they lost all the casual gamers and are in a bad spot now cuz of it

  • jjbredesen

Vita is outselling Wii U O_O Nintendo needs to get there act togther…. Lets hope MK8 can save it.

    • linkzero65

but remember the vita did exelent in japan only sooooo…

    • Good jRpg boost PSV sales in Japan. Just wait for games like this for Wii U

  • jhell

this year wii u going to shine

  • desgraciado79

Why do we get these filler articles? Why? When I come to this sight I want to know things about the Wii U, like upcoming games, progress of upcoming games, release dates, updates, hell even rumors are good. But sales figures of Japan, who gives a f**k? This was the site I always checked first but now I check Nintendo Life or Nintendo Everything because they usually report NEWS. The Wii U stuff I want to know about. The stuff Wii U Daily reports 1-2 days after the others have reported it.

    • Simon Stevens

      I always thought that!

    • Sydney Ultrasyd

I think it’s somehow always interesting. Of course, we don’t want only numbers, but if the rest is good news, with a little numbers here or there in between, it’s fine.

    • Wighead

I give a f**k, I want to know those numbers.

  • TinyGreenMonster

Why cannot US get Dragon Quest? This would be awesome!

    • linkzero65

why you ask? because : LIFE.

  • Frankie

It is a shame to see all the Wii U games already out of the top 10. Donkey Kong will be in it next week, but will probably be the only one.

  • Eoin Mulhern

Look on the bright side, Donkey Kong country well stuff Wii U’s out there which is only a week by now and all the systems decrease while the 3DS increased and becoming the top system out there in Japan.

  • Ducked

Why not write reviews, or opinion articles? Instead of writing these sh!tty articles no one cares about. None of us lives in Japan, just a wasted article….again

    • It happens every Wednesday and it will continue to happen. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. Some people are interested in it.

      • Ducked

These articles have no meaning on this site, I don’t see anyone getting more sleep or losing sleep knowing how the Wii U is selling in Japan.

How many people in this article are actually writing about this topic, it’s all random comments.

        • Marcel Pรฉrez

If you actually have this much concern over a video game news site (especially a Wii U one) then you my friend really have got a problem

And anyhow, theres like a gazillion more sites that don’t post the weekly sales I actually like that they post this.

(let us ignore the fact that there is NO interesting news to report about the Wii U lately)

    • matthew garcia

Its not a shitty article u just dont like hearing continuous bad news of bad sales or delays. The truth is that is the news of wii u lately. Also how can she write reviews of games if there are no games out

      • Skelterz

        Doth Ye Hath a crush?

        • matthew garcia

          Lol quiet you

          • Skelterz

            lol ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Ducked

It doesn’t bother me seeing that Wii U is selling bad, I could careless if the Wii U sells well at all. It’s their stupidness for failing to market it. No games? Nintendo Life has nearly every review on every Wii U game. Look how long it’s taking for them to show that Watch Dogs on Wii U was delayed? Their slow on news. I like this site, but they sure know how to write wasted articles.

  • Guest

Bye basic8gb hello deluxe.Every since I played on the wii u gamepad I cant go back to a regular controller. Sales seem to be picking up because I first went to walmart where they were soldout as well as ps4 but the xbox one was in stock so I opted to go to best buy and the wii u deluxe was the last one they had left.

    • matthew garcia

Not at mine they have a whole mountain of wii u. Im sure some stores are slowing down there shipments of wii u’s cuz they cant sale them fast enough

    • ben

the Xbox is in a mess. Nothing can save it.

  • Wolfgem

I want to see these articles. I may not live in Japan but I want to know how it does over there.

    • ben

It is not doing that great. It has it’s fans. There are a lot of kids who love DK and Mario but there are more that want sports games and shooters. Surprisingly a lot of people love American games.

      • Wolfgem

I know. You don’t need to tell me something I already know.

        • ben

          i mean in Japan!

  • matthew garcia

I fear for wii u’s safety when ps4 launches in japan

    • ben

The Wii U already did reasonable numbers in Japan. The PS4 is going to sell really well, but not to families. The challenge for Nintendo is to get all the kids with 3ds to buy a wii u. The 3ds is everywhere in Japan. I live in Japan. I walk around the supermarket and there are kids glued to their 3DS screens. If the Wii U was to make a Pokemon stadium game I can imagine the wii u sales would go nuts.

      • classicgamer20

I’d love to see a new stadium game or even better a new colosseum or XD

    • Wighead

It will depend on the japanese lineup. If there is enough japanese games, then yes. If its the same games we have, no. I don’t see japanese buying knack or BF4 or any FPS whatsoever. They wiil continue to play their handheld until the right japanese game releases.

      • ben

No Japanese games. But the kids are hyped for PS4.
I teach here and the Highschool boys are all hyped for PS4. I want Nintendo to do well, but I accept that PS4 is going to sell a lot.
However, as of yet, there are no Japanese titles for the PS4. Most Kids just like playing the same games as Europeans and Americans. The Jrpg sales are mostly among otaku types.

  • derng

Is it me or is anyone else kind of tired of seeing these frequent Japanese sales update? Success doesn’t just lay in Japan…

    • Yen

I think it’s just because Japanese sources make these numbers more open to the public.

    • Wighead

I’m not tired of these articles and if I was, I wouln’t click on the article. It’s fun to check those numbers and see what japanese are playing and on what platform they will play their games. They have totaly different taste than north americans. And FYI you will see those japan numbers each week since they do weekly sales analysis In Japan (famitsu, media create) and each month for NA (npd).

But does that mean the XBOX 360 only sold 260 consoles in one week? O.O (By any means, I am not an XBOX fan. Just for curiosity.)

    • HungryMetroid

yep, the 360 has always sold poorly in japan

    • Wighead

3000 units sold where exceptional weeks for the 360 in Japan, they don’t care at all for western games and console.

  • Johny

theres a Terraria game on Vita ? ๐Ÿ˜ geeze.. i want that. nice

  • Nintendoro

Seems like Vita sales are doing good. Maybe it’ll survive after all

    • oontz

Wait till the new vita slim / boarder lands 2 bundle is released in North America for $199usd.
