Media Create has released their sales numbers for Japan last week. The 3DS LL reclaims its spot atop the chart as the best selling piece of hardware, while the PS3 and PS Vita continue to move units. PlayStation 4 finds itself in the same position as the Wii U this week, with almost 7k units sold. This trend of home consoles performing less than handhelds like the Nintendo 3DS and the PS Vita goes to show just how the game market in Japan is rapidly changing. People would rather consume their games on the go than have a console at home. Several new titles were released last week as well, though Yokai Watch managed to remain in third place on the charts. The Japanese really seem to love that game. Here’s a look at the top ten software and the hardware lists for this week. Not a lot of surprise here, but it will be interesting to see how Mario Kart 8 performs once it is available on the market in just a few weeks. Man, definitely there is something about console gaming in Japan. Maybe it is the lack of compelling titles for both platforms in the Japanese market? Nope.avi Its mainly because of the lack of Fukushima power, and rolling blackouts… matthew garcia I think Nintendo should do what Sony did and focus more on the western market cuz console gaming is gone in Japan cuz everybody there is just on the move all the time. That’s why cell phone and handheld gaming sales so much there. Sony is killing it in America and Europe and with the right focus Wii u can to lonewolf If the ps3 still sells and the wii still sells a couple of jnits then its not bad as it seems even the xbox 360 is at a steady pace selling 300 consoles weekly. matthew garcia I’m not sure the country has over 150 million people. Its very populated and for consoles to be selling under 10000 a week really is bad lonewolf Its only the beginning and its always like that. Jon Turner Bingo. More compelling titles = better sales. That’s what eventually brought 3DS out of its slump (and to a lesser extent there, Vita). Even PS3 didn’t come to life until 2-3 years in its life. Adrian SAO is outselling pokemon. Hmm, I want that game haha. Joe It’s only outselling it as everyone already owns it life time sales are 4000000 plus unlike 200000. Adrian Good point! Still, I love SAO the anime. Jon Turner WiiU’s time will be coming with the release of MK8. A LOT of people obviously want it. The COMG preorder charts already trail the game ahead of MK7. It SHOULD do the trick in Japan. Adrian Hardcore fan, you are. I hope it does well, but I can’t predict the future. Time will tell. Mario Why are you writing like Yoda? Adrian I do what I want! You don’t know me! Mario Understand, I do. BIG Franky so only 76 units separate the Wii U and the PS4? that’s kinda interesting…. i am anxious to see what happens the week MK8 bundles drop… Jon Turner Wait, there are MK8 bundles prepared for Japan too? I thought they weren’t supposed to hit there. If they do, though, hopefully for the better. WiiU NEEDS to regain its momentum. BIG Franky I dunno…. I just assumed. even if they aren’t, I think Wii U should perform well when MK8 drops. Jon Turner Oh I think it’s a surefire bet it will. I mean, 3DS came to life primarily because of MK7. But also because of the stream of games that came after. Nintendo has to do the same thing to WiiU and bam — the system is revived. lonewolf Yes there are and you can choose from 10 different games for free not just 4 like in NA. Jon Turner Odd. I thought Japan WASN’T getting a MK8 bundle. I thought only Europe and USA were. If Japan DOES get one that’ll be arguably all the better. Magnus Gonzalez Wow. The Japanese, like the article says, are really not all that interested in consoles. Crazy. So soon after launch and the PS4 is doing worse than the Wii U (same time frame) and even worse than PS3. Makes me think Sony needs to maybe discontinue the PS3 and/or drop the price of PS4, some time this year. Same thing was happening with the Wii to the Wii U. Too many sales being taken away. To hear from fanboys you’d think the PS4 was going to be the biggest seller ever based on a strong first 3 months but they are struggling too. I keep waiting for all the negative articles on IGN and others about this predicament but I guess if it’s not Nintendo they’ll just sweep it under rug darkcreap Bear into mind that in the other regions it is not doing that bad, just in Japan. Magnus Gonzalez not true. Worldwide PS4 sales have steadily declined since the hype died down. Just a couple of months ago you couldn’t find them on shelves. They are everywhere now. There are no games that will drive sales until late this year so this trend may continue. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Wii U overtook them based on Kart. But if it doesn’t, it probably won’t ever get that chance again and the Wii U will be dead in the water. Yes, even this blind fanboy thinks so 😉 darkcreap Well, PS4 is selling like 100K each week consistently according to VGChartz. I know it is not a reliable source, but it cannot be too far from reality. It is selling more or less like the 3DS. WiiU on the other hand is selling an average of 30K weekly. Not good, but much better than last year. I don’t think the WiiU will ever overtake the PS4, since it is a console aimed at a general gaming public and that public is much more attracted towards PS4 and it seems to be a larger demographic than Nintendo hardcore fans. Everything seems to set it in third place, but the fact that PS4 is more powerful than X1 at a similar price (even after X1 dropped the Kinect) will maybe play in favour of Nintendo, since they are offering the only system that gives a true difference. The way I see it, if I want a console with power and good third party support, I would go for the PS4, since it is cheaper and more powerful. If I want different control paradigms (motion control, touch screen, off tv play, double screen gaming), good first party exclusives and even cheaper price tag, I would go for WiiU. That is, what I would go for if I didn’t already own one. Too bad that third party does not seel good on WiiU, since I have tried to buy as many third party games on it as I could. I have bought a lot from Ubisoft, actually: AC3, AC4, ZombiU and Rayman Legends. On the other hand, X1 offers almost the same in third party support than the PS4 and Sony seems to have a better first party support, but even then, those consoles seem to sell mainly due to third party support, so technically their differentiation is not that big (unless you like set top box functionalities that the X1 has). Actually, even a PC gives you a similar third party support compared to the PS4/X1, so for me PC+WiiU is the best option for those third party games they will never release on the WiiU. Which is sad, since I love OffTV play from my bed. All in all, I see WiiU on third place, but maybe second depending on how well X1 does. Sony doing it too god in price and power might be technically good for Nintendo. In this sense, it is good that Iwata went for differentiation. Too bad he screwed it in attracting third party support at any cost. Magnus Gonzalez I agree with you on all counts. Though I will be doing a PS4/Wii U combo eventually (only have a PS3 now) as I don’t ‘get’ PC gaming. I am not good at using keyboards/mouse in gaming. Though I know if I wanted the very best experience I should. But I have other hobbies and don’t think I need another (researching builds, spending $$$, endless practicing) which going PC would be. Sony gets better exclusives and is more powerful than xbox. Wii U gives me whimsy. I think I am all set with that. You don’t think that the million console lead the PS4 has on the Wii U might evaporate due to Mario Kart? I think it has to if the Wii U is going to succeed. I don’t think the lead would last more than a couple weeks to a month but it’d be a nice story darkcreap You can get a gamepad for PC or even use your PS3 controllers in the computer. I have some friends that have PC+PS3 and do that. No, I don’t think Mario Kart 8 will get the WiiU to overtake PS4 or if it does it will be temporarily. I think that the X1/PS4 crowd is a larger demographic and unless Nintendo tries to bring some of those people back, which they tried with the launch of the WiiU and failed, I doubt they will get better numbers. Of course there are also people who have more than one system, but roughly I think it is clear that the PS/Xbox fanbase is larger. It could change, though, if Nintendo get some third party deals or try to get old or new franchises that appeal to those audiences. My view is that Nintendo clearly lacks certain kids of games those audiences want. They have to either reach deals with third parties or do it themselves. That, or doing things like Hyrule Warriors to get Nintendo fans buying third party games in Nintendo skins (although I hope that Hyrule Warriors is more than a Dinasty Warriors in a Zelda skin). Honestly, I think a lot of Nintendo fans are very conservative towards trying other games that are not Nintendo. I try myself to buy third party games a get a more varied taste. Back in the day I only liked Mario games, Mario Kart, DK or Kirby games, but then I had only a PC for some part of my childhood and experienced other games. I also discovered Zelda, Assassin’s Creed and GTA games. I am also trying RPG games (My first one was Xenoblade, despite Monolith being owned by Nintendo) and my cousin has introduced me to the RPG world in general, so I think I am growing towards a more varied taste that drives me into third parties. I think it is better for Nintendo if their fanbase develop a more varied taste than just Nintendo games. The “only buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games” is a pretty negative thing in my opinion. greengecko007 “I keep waiting for all the negative articles on IGN and others about this predicament but I guess if it’s not Nintendo they’ll just sweep it under rug” http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/03/13/wii-u-sales-outpacing-playstation-4as-in-japan You mean like this? Can we please stop pretending that IGN hates NIntendo? It’s baseless, and anyone with common sense can see that it isn’t true. Magnus Gonzalez even that article went out of its way to make excuses for the PS4, stating it’s the Japanese consumer’s move away from consoles or hints at supply problems as reasons for the decline in sales. No such allowances given to the Wii U at the same time in its history. So let’s stop pretending there is even a fraction of the negativity on gaming sites towards Xbone/PS4 as there was for the Wii U. Anyone with common sense can see that it isn’t true greengecko007 They aren’t excuses, they are reasons. Is the PS4 having a hard time is Japan? Absolutely, and it’s good for readers to understand why. I seem to remember plenty of people defending the Wii U when it’s sales slowed after launch. It was still selling better than the PS3, or just wait for more games, etc. I guess you’ll just look for any ounce of negativity to fuel your conspiracy that media outlets have an agenda against Nintendo, when the reality is that so many Nintendo fans have an agenda against the media because facts apparently offend them. Daniel Carvalho I invite you to go over a research on the internet and find articles that give reasons for why the Wii U is struggling (start with mid 2013, those are the best), instead of simply bashing the console and Nintendo, claiming either the Wii U is discontinued or Nintendo will go third-party for good. Yes, the article may give very plausible reasons for the PS4 not to be selling well, but the very same site never investigated the reasons the Wii U was in the same situation before attacking it with full force. greengecko007 I’ll admit, I couldn’t find any articles on IGN in which the poor sales of the Wii U were given explanation of speculated as to why is was happening. However, it’s hard to find something like that when I also couldn’t find any articles that were written solely to convey how poor the Wii U sales were. Although it’s a different topic, it’s somewhat related… This article from them explains Nintendo’s financial reveal, and explains where there losses came from. The article is dated from last July, which was a rough period for the Wii U. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/31/nintendo-financials-reveal-dire-wii-u-sales It’s simply reporting facts. But IGN takes this a step further, and writes articles such as this, explaining to readers that even if the Wii U should hypothetically fail, Nintendo is still in a comfortable position financially, which is very important. http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/01/17/does-it-really-matter-if-the-wii-u-fails Interestingly, it’s written by the same person at IGN. Magnus Gonzalez yeah, those people defending the Wii U were on sites like these where even here they had to defend themselves against trolls like you. The Wii U had a decent launch so it didn’t perform pitifully its first six months. Nice try I don’t think there is an agenda. What is happening is the writers/editors at these sites/publications have grown up playing Playstation/Xbox and therefore their views are biased. Also, Nintendo doesn’t advertise heavily for the most part and these sites depend on that. But they know Nintendo has a strong following so they pay some lip service and write click bait to get hits. Why are you defending the media. You’d have to be blind to have missed the negative spin on Nintendo since the Wii. I frequent most of these sites daily and have seen this going on for years. It reached a feverish pitch with the Wii U though. greengecko007 “The Wii U had a decent launch so it didn’t perform pitifully its first six months. Nice try” Please show me where I said the Wii U performed pitifully during it’s first six months. The six months I’m referring to would be the six months following the launch period, from about March to September (when Pikmin 3 was finally released). A pathetic number of Wii Us were sold during this time. “I don’t think there is an agenda. What is happening is the writers/editors at these sites/publications have grown up playing Playstation/Xbox and therefore their views are biased.” And you think they didn’t grow up playing Nintendo too? If there is any bias, it’s pro NIntendo. I’d encourage you to look at reviews for non-Nintendo games and see the nitpicky (but valid) complaints reviewers have against games while giving a free pass to Nintendo games for the exact same thing. The New Wolfenstein game was criticized by IGN for using old mechanics for looting ammo, yet IGN has no problem with only being able to save in certain spots in A Link Between Worlds, an equally archaic mechanic. “where even here they had to defend themselves against trolls like you” Well that explains it. If what I’m saying you bothers you so much that you think I’m a troll, it’s no wonder you are so easily offended by the media. This just reinforces my belief that people like you are insecure. You obviously ignore my posts that compliment Nintendo or show my enthusiasm as a fan, and choose to only focus on posts that aren’t overflowing with joy, just as you so obviously do with the media as well. Magnus Gonzalez Oh..I see. I thought since you are comparing the PS4 which has been out six months that you must have been referring to the very same time frame of the Wii U for comparisons sake. How was I supposed to know which arbitrary cherry picked 6 month period you meant. You are such a clown No…they didn’t grow up playing Nintendo. Look around. The writers and editors you see look to be primarily in their 20s and early 30s. When they were teenagers Playstation and Xbox were all the rage. They grew up on those systems. There are still the guys like Peer at IGN that grew up with Nintendo but those types are fewer and far between. If you don’t want to be considered a troll. Don’t defend Nintendo’s detractors with such fervor on a Wii U centric fan site. I see your occasional positive posts so you aren’t quite in Daniel’s or Magnus’ territory but on this issue you are unequivocably wrong and your insistence on defending the obviously negative press the Wii U has gotten is troll like greengecko007 “How was I supposed to know which arbitrary cherry picked 6 month period you meant. You are such a clown” Perhaps by using a bit of common sense? If I’m referring to a six month period in which the Wii U performed badly, I’m obviously NOT talking about the launch period in which the Wii U launched with around 3 million units sold. It doesn’t take a whole lot of deductive reasoning to come to the conclusion that I’m referring to the 6 month period in which there were no high profile games released for the Wii U, and as a result, extremely low sales. “When they were teenagers Playstation and Xbox were all the rage.” And when they were children, Nintendo was unchallenged in the gaming the industry. Sure Sega had a few of their own consoles, but going by how they sold, on the hindsight that they aren’t making consoles anymore, they were hardly competition. “but on this issue you are unequivocably wrong” Because you said so? That’s a bold claim which you seem to be having a hard time proving. Sorry, but resorting to name calling like “troll”, or “clown”, isn’t an actual argument. Magnus Gonzalez do you even read what you write? we are talking about PS4 sales and their decline. It’s been out for 6 months. Any comparison with the Wii U needs to be for the same time frame. You make no sense cherry picking certain months to substantiate your argument. Why would you choose later months for the Wii U to compare to the PS4? What in God’s name would make you think that makes sense? The topic at hand is whether the PS4 is suffering the same fate regarding sales as the Wii U did. When you compare two things it makes the most sense to compare apples to apples like launch through 6 months…because that is all that we have to go on that both companies had transpire. And then you bring up Nintendo being unchallenged when they were children. But it’s different when your first foray into gaming is Xbox and Playstation which is what I think most of these writers had. If they are 25-30 years old now they’ve probably at best been gaming since they were teenagers which coincides with Playstation and Xbox not Nintendo. People my age 39 were playing NES/SNES/Sega as teenagers and young adults. People my age and older are not the voices you primarily hear on most gaming sites. Check around, I’m right. So naturally these people favor what they grew up with as people my age favor our childhood consoles of choice. I feel like I am wasting my time explaining this to you so I am done. Good luck with…all that greengecko007 “we are talking about PS4 sales and their decline.” Actually, my reply to you, and our conversation, has been about me disagreeing with your view of IGN and how they feel about Nintendo. You have made it clear that anything negative reported about Nintendo offends you, and you feel that the media aren’t covering Sony’s trouble with the PS4 as extensively as they have covered Nintendo’s struggle with the Wii U. To that point, I would actually agree, because it’s quite obvious why they haven’t. As I said earlier in my reply to you, which I’m starting to doubt that you actually have the ability to comprehend, “It’s not even close to the same situation”. The Wii U struggled for 6 months worldwide. During that time, the media reported on low Wii U sales. It’s definitely news when a company like Nintendo, which has seen success for as long as I’ve been alive, starts going into the red and struggling to sell their product. The PS4 has seen a sharp decline in sales IN JAPAN for the past MONTH. Do you not see the difference? The media IS reporting on low PS4 sales, but if you are expecting the same amount of articles that were focused on the Wii U within a 6 month timespan to be written for the PS4’s struggles in a month, you are completely unreasonable. Magnus Gonzalez well, with the Order now being delayed. Let’s see if there are multiple articles about the lack of games for the PS4. I’m guessing no greengecko007 There’s a lack of games? Wolfenstein The New Order came out last week, and Watchdogs came out today. That’s 2 AAA titles in a week timespan. Then you have the critically acclaimed indie game Transistor which also came out last week. Ubisoft’s Child of Light (which is also on the Wii U) isn’t even a month old, and is another critically acclaimed game. Meanwhile what has the Wii U gotten that is worthwhile in the past month? Child of Light is great, but what else? Nothing, but if we go back farther than a month, we get… NES Remix 2… and if we go back all the way to February, we have Donkey Kong. Mario Kart 8 cannot come fast enough. Magnus Gonzalez critically acclaimed for Wolfenstein? ha ha. what a fanboy. Watchdogs blows chunks. The reviews are around 8 for critics and 6 for viewers on Metacritic. It’s a major disappointment. But interesting how you are brining up multiplats. Who cares about those. Since you can play those games on several different machines they mean jack shit as far as sales for the PS4. The Order was an exclusive and it is delayed to 2015. Please tell me what great exclusives that force me to get a PS4 are out or coming out in 2014. Then compare that to the Wii U’s library now and through 2014. There’s really no comparison. Why are you on here. You obviously don’t like the Wii U. Why don’t you and Daniel get lost and go to Dualshock fanboys r us and leave Wii U fans alone? greengecko007 Still doubting that you actually have the ability to read to comments… I didn’t say that Wolfenstein was critically acclaimed. It’s seems like a perfectly good game though. “Watchdogs blows chunks” How so? I’ve been watching and reading reviews as well as looking at videos quite a bit today and it looks great. I plan on getting it when it finally comes to the Wii U. “But interesting how you are brining up multiplats. Who cares about those. Since you can play those games on several different machines they mean jack shit as far as sales for the PS4.” You claimed that there was a lack of games on the PS4, and I proved you wrong, so now you’re defaulting to “Well they aren’t exclusive so who cares?”. That’s hilarious, earlier in your replies you kept using the term “cherrypicking”, and it was obvious that you didn’t know what that even means. Ironically, what you just did is a perfect example. The real question should be “Who cares that they are multiplatform?” because the only platform they aren’t on is the Wii U. Owners of other consoles have plenty of games to play. “You obviously don’t like the Wii U. Why don’t you and Daniel get lost and go to Dualshock fanboys r us and leave Wii U fans alone?” Why don’t you leave? I thought you said you were already done anyways. It’s obvious that you can’t form an actual argument and just default to the typical fanboy responses. If what I, Daniel, or anybody else on the website tells you bothers you so much, maybe you need to take a break from the internet. Magnus Gonzalez I claimed there was a lack of system selling games that propel people to purchase the PS4. Every console but Wii U gets these multiplats so there isn’t an impetus to spend $400 on a new console yet. Exclusives differentiate consoles from each other and drive sales. The PS4 has had and will have very little to offer to entice people to make the jump now that the hype has died. First 6 months for you had these exclusive: NSMBU, Nintendo Land, ZombiU, Lego City, Monster Hunter 3 U. Not to mention the plethora of 3rd party multi plats and indies but they mean little regarding sales. Compared to PS4 with Knack, KZ, ISS and ???? Awful launch. Really bad and unlike the Wii U which followed shortly after it’s launch period with: NSLU, Game and Warrio, WindWaker HD, Pikmin 3, SM3DW, Sonic Lost World, Wii Party U….PS4 has what again for exlusives? What again for games in general to round out its first year on the market? My words: “There are no games that will drive sales until late this year so this trend may continue” with all these delays I am not sure there are really ANY games to drive sales to the PS4. It will sell strictly based on Holidays and slight rise in graphics. Whipeeee!! There have now been several delays for PS4 games that you fanboys were bragging about. Nintendo has been slow bringing out the 1st party games no doubt, but not in comparison to the pitiful pace the PS4 is setting. But looks like the exact same thing is happening with the PS4 that you all claimed was happening to the Wii U but 100x worse. Instead of admitting this you fight tooth and nail. Sorry, it’s happening. The same criticisms doled out for the Wii U should now be falling on the PS4. But you won’t read half the negativity because these sites are littered with fanboy apologists like yourself who write and edit for them. Have fun with your PS360 games on your PS4. I’ll wait until there’s an actual library of 1st party titles, probably summer 2015. When did I say I was done? Must have been a time when I was over frustrated dealing with trolls if I did. greengecko007 “I claimed there was a lack of system selling games that propel people to purchase the PS4.” Your comment, to which I replied to, states; “well, with the Order now being delayed. Let’s see if there are multiple articles about the lack of games for the PS4. I’m guessing no” Once again though, you provide a perfect example of what cherrypicking rhetoric is. Your quote; “There are no games that will drive sales until late this year so this trend may continue” comes from a comment made 6 days ago, and a conversation that was not between you and me. I’d actually agree with this to an extent. We certainly aren’t going to see PS4 sales massively increase as a result of people waiting for games like Wolfenstein or Watchdogs. At the same time though, I don’t see the PS4 seeing a sharp decline in sales, except for regions like Japan, as it still has a healthy release schedule of quality games. “But looks like the exact same thing is happening with the PS4 that you all claimed was happening to the Wii U but 100x worse” Except that the PS4 has 3rd party support, consistent game releases, and better sales… If you think the PS4 is doing worse than the Wii U somehow, you’re in denial. It’s already outsold it, and profitable as a brand for Sony. “The same criticisms doled out for the Wii U should now be falling on the PS4.” We’ve already discussed this. When the PS4 goes through a 6 month game drought and has worldwide sales fall to abysmal numbers then you will get the same criticisms that the Wii U got. “I’ll wait until there’s an actual library of 1st party titles, probably summer 2015.” I couldn’t care less when or if you get a PS4. If it doesn’t appeal to you, it doesn’t appeal to you. It’s not for everyone. If the only games you are interested in playing is 1st party exclusives(for what? bragging rights?), then by all means, stick to the Wii U, and if you have one, the 3DS. Nintendo is the largest publisher and developer of 1st party content by far. But if you want something to play between the scattered releases and game droughts, you may need another platform to play on, which could be anything; PS4, Xbox One, or PC. “When did I say I was done?” Right here, the last reply you made to me 6 days ago before reigniting this conversation today. “I feel like I am wasting my time explaining this to you so I am done. Good luck with…all that” Magnus Gonzalez sometimes I can’t help but try to fix stupid…to no avail. It’s a flaw of mine. 504HotBoy I feel ya man. Im 35 going on 36 and I feel the same way! Leo I completely agree with you. Sadly what we see today in the media regarding Nintendo bad press is essentially the final chapter of a movement that began 10-15 years ago when Nintendo and Sega lost their edge on home consoles, shifting the industry to Playstation and Xbox. Those kids of the late 90s / early 00s are 20yo adults nowadays who writes for the mainstream press, totally favoring Sony and Microsoft because those companies defined their childhood experience. I know the feeling, i usually favor Nintendo because i grew with its consoles, as everyone else over 30yo. 504HotBoy That pretty much sums it up. I myself have a certain type of respect and compassion for Nintendo & Sega, because I grew up during that era. Been playing video games since the 2nd Gen, my first 2 consoles were Atari 2600 & Coleco Vision. But it was the 3rd Gen that made me fall in love with video games, the 8-bit NES & 8-Bit Sega Master System.I experienced what it was like doing those times, my memories, my childhood. It’s a whole different experience when you actually came up during that time line. My nephew is going on 21 later this year and he is the biggest Microsoft fan. He never really got to experience any Nintendo systems. Only when he came to my house, but was still to young to appreciate the earlier Nintendo consoles at the time and by not owning one, never got a chance to enjoy or truly experience their franchises. That’s basically what it is, a lot of the media and press of today a lot of them are under 30 and , grew up during the rise of Sony & Microsoft, so those are their fond memories with gaming. Magnus Gonzalez it’s hard to fault people for having a preference but when you put on your journalist hat you need to be as objective as possible. Prime example. When ZombiU was reviewed by Greg a.k.a. not funny over at IGN he just didn’t get the game. Complained about nonsensicle things and his low score contributed to the lower Metacritic score which if he had scored it like it deserved, would have raised Metacritic and quite possibly changed people’s perception of the Wii U. Some might say that I’m being dramatic. But let me explain: If the first 3rd party exclusive for the Wii U had gotten a Metacritic score in the 80s like the majority scored it, than perhaps that helps sell more ZombiU copies, shows 3rd party it’s possible to be successful on the Wii U and gets people talking positively about the Wii U. Maybe Ubisoft keeps Rayman Legends exclusive which would have been pretty huge. Instead, a couple of douches (IGN and Gamespot) destroy the game with moronic reviews and the rest is history. All it takes is something like that to have a snowball effect. These yahoos don’t need much incentive to talk smack about their favorite console’s competition. Fast forward to Resogun’s 90 score by IGN and you start to see what I am talking about. That is an okay game. Not as good as Zombiu yet it scores 30 points higher. Why? Well, I think Knack was so universally considered bad so the powers that be had to prop a PS4 exclusive up to balance it out. Otherwise the launch would have been an even bigger disaster as far as games go. 504HotBoy You hit the nail on the spot. I noticed that by a lot of gamers under 25. My 2 coworkers, one is 24 and the other 26 are extremely bias towards Sony, but the first system they played was Playstation and only owned Sony consoles. So I can see why they think the way they do. But there’s a lot of people out there like that. Ducked The reason Sony’s PS4 is selling horrible in Japan is because it has zero games right now to appeal to your Japanese gaming crowd. All it has is Knack, which is a poor platformer. Sony was stupid releasing the PS4 this early in Japan if they don’t have any games for their home country. Once it gets its big JRPG’s out like Final Fantasy XV, Deep Down, Kingdom Hearts III, etc. PS4 sales will be off the charts, or at least much better. Thing is those games are at least one year away. So Sony will be eating a lot of money away. The Clockwork Being I really can`t wait to see how Mario Kart will affect the market. I don`t expect it to sell in such a outstanding and impossible way like 1 million copies in Japan. But I do expect it to that over the course of 3 weeks. I really want it to give a great sales boost to the Wii U, making it claim the top in hardware sales for at least that week. Edit:Currently at school and during lunch ill be able to play Mario Kart 8 at a Best Buy close to school. Can`t wait! Edit 2: The PS4 numbers really are awful. For a console in its homeland doing this bad sales sucks! Petri Wasn’t PS4 touted as American “made” console? Though doubt that has much to do with abysmal launch over there. Noctus No Sonys a Japanese company as it’s headquarters are in Japan and they developed and manufactured in Japan Petri Yes, but I read somewhere that PS4 was designed by US HQ. matthew garcia Well it is designed like a western pc but I’m not sure if the HQ was in America Petri I really cant remember, and this was all I found with the time I was interested to spare: http://www.wired.com/2013/11/playstation-4/ matthew garcia Huh, interesting I wasn’t aware of this information. Thanks for sharing Officer Raichu hmm learn something new every day Daniel Carvalho What Petri means is that Sony focused more on stuff that works in USA instead of what works in Japan. Not only they prioritized Western countries regarding its launch date (Japan only received it this year), but all its functions are made to appeal to the western market more than their homeland’s. Also, all their major titles are from western developers, still not having a single major titles (at least not one I’ve known about) made by Japanese developers. Daniel Carvalho I do expect Mario Kart 8 to sell at least 1 million copies worldwide in the course of one month. Now, if Nintendo manages to market it correctly (which doesn’t seem to be the case, seeing how they’ve been doing things so far), I’d expect from 2.5 to 3.5 in the same period, going to something between 4 or 6 millions until the end of the next fiscal year. Now, for console sales, I’d guess we can see an increase right away, but nothing outrageous as well. Maybe we’ll see a steady increase depending on the E3 presentations and the launch dates for the next titles, but I don’t expect Mario Kart 8 to drive console sales so much, specially because it uses virtually no exclusive features of the Gamepad. gerb1977 Marketing has been better as of late. The MK8 commercials are pretty good and all over Cartoon Network, Disney XD, and Nickelodeon. I’d like to see it on some other channels but at least it is getting some air time. They also have commercials for it in the previews before Godzilla. Maybe they will go for some prime time spots next week leading up to the release. Daniel Carvalho That’s good to see they’re advertising it somewhere. No commercials for Wii U here in Brazil, but again, no commercials for pretty much any game or console either. I just want Nintendo to not stop advertising it, like they did with other games a while after launch, and start advertising the Wii U Virtual Console and Wii Mode as well. Also, a game that fully utilizes the Gamepad! TehEngineer They’ve already announced a year long marketing campaign for Mariokart 8, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about there. Gregg I DID see it before Godzilla. +1 Officer Raichu not advertising huh tell that to the millions of americans who saw mk8 in full glory before godzilla opening week nuff said Daniel Carvalho Well, good. They’re doing their job at one country. What about the rest of the world that also plays Nintendo games? Not to mention that, although they are doing some pretty smart moves, like the Mario Kart racing course, the advertisement for the console itself has been awful, specially if compared to how they used to advertise the Wii. Officer Raichu well we dont know how there doing i just only know Americas since i saw mk8 trailer in theaters Daniel Carvalho Well, after a bit of researching, I can say they’re doing fairly well in Japan, good in USA and almost non-existent in Latin America. I understand they’d want to focus more on their “cores”, but aside from gaming magazines, there’s no advertisement of either the console or the game (any other game for that matter). And the proof they’re advertising it poorly is the low sales. Why did the PS4 and Xbox One manage to sell so much in launch? Because Sony and Microsoft had been advertising their consoles as if there was no tomorrow: one bashing the other, telling people their console was the best because they could exchange games, telling people they could watch TV on their VHS, fueling the console wars over the internet; everyone was talking about the PS4 and Xbox One. And where was Nintendo on all of that? Not only they were having trouble telling people what they had was a new console, and not a peripheral, they stayed out of where the spotlight was: the flaming wars between the consoles. I’m not saying they should’ve attacked Microsoft with “how to lend games” like Sony did, but at that time they should’ve stepped in and said “hey, we are the only ones who allow retrocompatibility this generation”, “we have the Virtual Console, wanna play some old titles you missed?”, “you know the name Wii U? Well, we’re changing it to Super Nintendo Wii”! I understand Nintendo’s position on making something different from their competitors, but they clearly believed if they did so they would have no competition, so they would sell as much as the other two alongside them (at least that’s what I can get from their actions). Instead they just shadowed themselves, let the consumers and retailers believe the U was just an accessory, failed to create any momentum for the console (and they had a bunch of games for that, with Ninja Gaiden 3 remade full of blood and combos, ZombiU, Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario 3D World and Zelda Wind Waker HD – see how many titles they could’ve been using to advertise the console? Instead we got only a few weeks on ads here and there but nothing on how “you can only play it in HD on a Wii U and nowhere else” ads flying all over the place?), they also failed to understand why they were not selling anything, and that led to mistakes like not using the Gamepad for anything meaningful because “consumer still don’t understand how good the Gamepad is”, when the truth is “people still think it’s not a new console”. I’m worried about how Mario Kart 8 sales will go. Sure, they’re doing a pretty good job at advertising the game. In USA. Maybe in Japan too. I have no idea on how they’re doing at Europe, but in Latin America I see nothing! I’m afraid they’ll end up doing exactly like they’be done with other titles: advertise it a bit and forget about it a couple of weeks after launch, and as a result they start doing all sorts of unnecessary things to get the casuals back. I DO hope I’m mistaken and they start creating momentum (finally) with other launches, but so far they’ve been doing it all wrong. The few exceptions are when they did not enough. Officer Raichu well i agree but.. in SA consoles are ridiculously expensive and are only bought for fifa sony microsoft and nintendo dont do much there since its abysmal bizzy gie As far as Edit 2 goes, couldn’t the exact same be said about Wii U? I mean at least PS4 has no Japanese games as its excuse. What’s Wii U’s? Let’s be fair to all consoles. lonewolf Well the poeple who wanted the wii u in japan already bought it. Now they need to motivate those people who were hesitant to buy it. Rinslowe They’re in the same boat. Mario Kart 8 should be one of those titles people in Japan want to play. Then it’ll sell. Same goes for PS4, when the right title hits. matthew garcia When ps4 sales over 300,000 each month in u.s. I don’t think a wimpy 6000 a week matter anyway Mercurio2054 it’s difficult to know with the new taxes Capt. Smoker Your a school kid and you care about sales?, at your age, it was all about smokes, girls and dbz budokai on the gamecube, kids these days and their priorities Officer Raichu that sounds amazing but take out girls since they are still talked about then were smokin Magnus Eriksson My guess it will jump quite a lot. Maybe 50.000 at the best week. Rinslowe In regard to Edit 2. Yeah it’s hard to argue with that observation. It’s a fact in Japan. But like Wii U the hardcore fans have their consoles already and the ones on the fence just need to see the right titles available for their market. Once Sony releases a couple of titles the Japanese want to play, PS4 will start to sell again outside of the early adopter crowd. It seems their eye though is squarely set on the West for the time being… Shota mario kart 8 definitely get the number 1 spot when it releases greengecko007 Both the Wii U and PS4 need more Japanese games in order to really grab hold of the Japanese market. Mario Kart 8 will hopefully do well in Japan, but a Pokemon game would be amazing. Just look at Pokemon X and Y for example. Not even a year old and they have destroyed other 3DS games in terms of sales and have already claimed the #1 best selling spot. MerryBlind . Well hopefully that rumored Pokemon fighting game is real and will be announced at e3! Sure it’s not an RPG, but if they make it 3D/real-time, not static and turn-based, it could be amazing. Daniel Carvalho A Pokemon Colosseum-like game, with those HD graphics, the possibility to play online with other Wii U and 3DS Pokemon titles of the same generation would be just perfect! greengecko007 I loved the in game tournaments in Colosseum and XD. Imagine being able to organize online Pokemon tournaments in a similar way to what Mario Kart 8 is doing. I’d much prefer that to having to use online battle simulators. Daniel Carvalho We need a console Pokemon game that allows players to capture all the existing Pokemon (or at least almost all, leaving legendaries and exclusives of certain portable versions aside), items, berries and TMs and HMs. The reason games like Pokemon Colosseum and Battle Revolution are not as popular as the portable games are is because they’re too limited. In Colosseum we can only capture the Shadow Pokemon and a few more wild Pokemon, using some gimmicks that limit the amount of Pokemon you can attract (which tend to be very tedious situations); and in Battle Revolution all you’re able to do is battle, either with your own customized pass, created if you have a DS to link your game to it, or through a Rental Pass, which gives you pretty much weak Pokemon with weird attack settings that never fit your strategy. We need a console game that gives us as much as the portable games do. One that allow us to fully enjoy all the features the series has in a single machine. greengecko007 Well, to be fair… Colosseum and XD were created primarily to make completing the Pokedex in the 3rd gen games actually possible, since there was no other way to get the majority of the Johto native Pokemon, including their cover legendaries. But I agree, a full scale Pokemon adventure on the Wii U without a lot of limitations on what you could capture would be great. Dáibhí wotshissurname The Pinky – The Pinky and the BRAIN, BRAIN, BRAIN, BRAIN, BRAIN, BRAIN, BRAIN, BRAIN, BRAIN! (Da-da-da-daaaaa!) URFTBOUND4LIFE . You said it wrong. It’s ”They’re dinky- They’re Pinky and the Brain….ect Step your toon game up. Dáibhí wotshissurname Aaah – editing time! Mario It ends with “NARF!” you know. :-p darkcreap Vita doing bad, 3DS not as good as expected (some say it will do worse than Game Boy Advance), WiiU doing poorly, PS4 not doing that nice in Japan. Man, this is bad for gaming, I tell you. URFTBOUND4LIFE . Do people really expect games to sell at the same level as it did years ago? Different time period and different economy. Your averaged Joe or Josephine are cutting back on spending folks. That’s why games sales are lower than the previous generations. darkcreap You mean it has got to do with the general economic downturn we have been experimenting since 2008? Yes, pretty reasonable. oontz In North America the industry is actually growing. http://m.joystiq.com/2014/02/12/npd-us-video-game-sales-reach-15-39-billion-in-2013/ Jason Well, the GBA was killed by the DS which came 3 years after. So unless the 3DS successor comes soon, it won’t. lonewolf How 43 millions units sold is bad? Actually the 3ds sold around 25.000 units which is not bad. darkcreap I didn’t say it was bad, I said it is thought that it will not match the GBA, which might show a decline in the market. That seems pretty strange to me, since entertainment is something that has always been demanded and I don’t see a reason why it should stop being so. Apart from that, I was commenting about 3DS global sales. Nintendo forecasted 18 million for this year and it was 13 in the end. That means it is not matching long term expectations and that seems worrying to me, since I see no reason for it underperforming being a good platform. Same happens to WiiU, Vita and PS4. As another user pointed out as a response to my previous comment, probably the global economic crisis we have been experiencing since 2008 has a say in why entertainment is not moving that much money as expected. oontz Actually in all other regions, the gaming industry is seeing growth compared to previous generations… Just not japan. Rinslowe Bit early to say that though. Halfway through this generation we might be all able to plot where things are going to land. But I think personally just like the 3DS managed to do a complete turn around for the better, it’s just as likely that all platforms may do the opposite and taper off early. Of course it’s just as likely they could stay on a steady course or continue to increase over time. But as of right now anyone’s guess could end up being the right one, come the end of the generation. oontz “Bit early to say that though.” I was speaking of 2012 compared to 2013 in North America which showed a growth of 1%. I know gaming is also growing in Japan but it’s mainly mobile gaming is the area that is showing the most growth. Rinslowe Actually it’s a related topic. I know what you were implying… oontz I know it’s related… I wasn’t forecasting how 2014 would end up only looking at the data from the last 2 years. As you said for all we know this year could should more growth or less… only time will tell. lonewolf Yup its probably the global economic crisis but its silly they even annoumced that much sales because you never expect what will happen to the market itz even silly to expect to sell something if you dont offer it at the market in the first place so sales expectetions mean nothing. They just expected to sell that much it doesnt mean they knew it will sell that much even if they knew something would have gone wrong and they wouldnt have sold that much. So expectations mean nothing for example I expect to have a flying car but does that means its possible? No. themizarkshow Really wish that 3DS games sold that well around me. I’m tired of going all over town with my system and never getting more than a couple streetpasses. EvaBrain A japanese girl dancing and take off bra and panty on the street http://bit.ly/1jqxm5F LukeMM95 LIAR! Rinslowe Sounds more like someone interested in harvesting IP addresses. Could have just asked us nicely. Lol. Donaald And now the ps3 is outselling the ps4, while the gap between Wii U and ps4 is almost non-existant, wow! Ducked PlayStation 3 outselling PlayStation 4, wow, just wow. That’s what you get Sony when you give no games to appeal to your home country. matthew garcia How badly is ps4 outselling ps3 in America and Europe though Ducked True. PS4 is dominating the western markets. I’m a big JRPG fan, so that’s why I haven’t purchased a PS4 yet. And this is from a guy who’s been PlayStation since PlayStation was out. I hate how the gaming industry is all first person shooters. matthew garcia I’m a huge jrpg fan also. I like some 1st person shooters but only the revolutionary ones. I think it’s the same thing with jrpg’s they are running out of ideas and don’t sell as well as they did in the 90’s. I’m not talkin about pokemon though I mean the ones that have deep storylines and deep battle systems. Pokemon is to kiddish and simple for me matthew garcia U have any personal Favorite jrpg’s 504HotBoy Wow. I didn’t know you were a JRPG fan. That’s my favorite genre. Whether it’s traditional, action, or strategy. I love JRPGs. Mario Platformers are my favorite of genres. RPGs being close seconds. 504HotBoy Yeah mine are RPGs (mainly JRPGs), Adventure, Action, Platformers, & Survival Horrors. Those 5 genres, I play the most and always support the most. matthew garcia Yeah vagrant story and legend of dragoon are a couple of my favorites. Oh also grandia and skies of arcadia. On Snes I liked breath of fire and Lufia 2 504HotBoy As far as traditional I liked the older Final Fantasy games, Dragon Warrior/Quest (series), Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star, Suikoden, Grandia (series), Skies Of Arcadia, Lost Odyssey, Tales (series), Wild Arms, Lunar (series) Star Ocean (series), XenoGears, XenoBlade Chronicles, so many more, etc…. for action/rpgs Legend Of Zelda (series), Landstalker, Alundra, Beyond Oasis, Legend Of Oasis, Crusade Of Centy, Secret Of Mana, Nier, Illusion Of Gaia, Brave Fencer Musashi, The Last Story, the list goes on and on, etc., Strategy rpgs, Fire Emblem (series), Langrisser, Shining Force (series), Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyria Chronicles, and many more, etc….. matthew garcia I love all those games u mentioned but I never played shining force Ducked I love the Final Fantasy games, I’ve played the FF series the longest. I’ve been impressed with Dragon Quest and Etrian Odyssey series. I’m a huge kingdom hearts fan, but I wouldn’t consider it a JRPG. anthony optimo The 3DS XL is looking more and more appealing. If only an HD edition with a HDMI connection were available so I could have the option to play it on the go or at home, if they did that I would buy it for sure. Derek Japanese stores are so colorful. Will the3rd Only interesting comment. Elvis Michael Question: Does the NPD Group release their numbers each and every month? If im not mistaken, they tend to NOT show hardware sales on certain months. If so, why is that? And speaking of which, it’s already the end of May and we haven’t seen sales figures for April….do they have a set date on these things? Jordan Jones Yes they release once every month, they released Aprils around last week. Wiiudaily didn’t have them for obvious reasons. Wiiu only sold around 50k, xone 100k and ps4 200k rounding the numbers of course Carlos Coronado Pols like gaining on the go is going to be the way of the future Leo By next week the WiiU will overtake the PS4 on weekly sales in Japan. Interesting. ben In two weeks the wii u will at least be doubling the sales of PS4 on a weekly basis. matthew garcia And in America ps4 quadrupals Wii u ben Maybe not. Listen to the giant bombcast podcast. PS4 and Xbox have no games, sooner or later the public is going to catch on. I can see the Wii U out selling the PS4 when Mariokart releases. Even if it is only for a week. Leo The hype for “next-gen” consoles PS4 and XBox One are way too high. I think the western media brainwashed people to convince them that those new consoles are a safe “investment” that will deliver many games for years to come, sadly the WiiU didn’t had this luxury and was scalped and thrown under the bus. No media ever presented the WiiU as an “investment”, on the the contrary, they did their best to finish the console at birth. Lets see if Nintendo once again, against all odds, will manage to shift its fortunes and make this console a respectable success. ben I listened to the Giant bombcast today. They seem pretty depressed about the “Next gen” power twins games for E3. Now the western media are trying to tell the PS4 and Xbox customers “it isnt about the graphics, the future is indies.” 3 podcasts this last week promoted this idea. So basically if you bought a ps4 or an xbox you will get 3 AAA games a year and the rest will be stuff you could have played ( if you wanted to, on your last console). Nothing wrong with the indie scene but when IGN and Giant bomb are saying the PS4 won’t have many triple A games for the next 2 years and that people should be happy with the “Thriving” Indie scene, that is a spit in the face of the “Power” argument. Commander Jim Why do people say this kind of nonsense? Already the PS4 and XBO libraries are more impressive than the Wii U’s and they’ve only been out for a third of the time, and the lineups on both over the next six months are epic. There’s an average of about one AAA title for every week left in the year. What do you think the average gamer is more interested in? Mario Kart and SSB? Or Arkham Knight, Destiny, Halo 5, Assassins Creed Unity, the Order 1886, Sunset Overdrive etc etc. ben All those games are great, however, non of them are out yet. What’s more, none of them are made for everyone to play. The average gamer is also only 20 percent of the people who buy games consoles. Nothing5555 Hmmm.. That Idolmaster game took the top spot in Japan and its on the PS3. I wonder what that game is like? ben Hentai…. Rinslowe If I was asked what I thought about the average Japanese gamer. I’d have to say smart. Right now the best value for money home console has to be PS3. IF you don’t own one, great time to dive in and enjoy the massive library of great titles available. 3DS is just a juggernaut. And Wii U plus PS4 are still finding their relevance with the crowd. Wii U though is starting to have a really decent amount of first party titles. I envy those that will pick up a console for the first time with Kart. Also yet to play Pikmin 3, SM3DW, DKCTF and WWHD. Not to mention Bayo 2 later this year and X, Smash bros… oontz Playing windwaker again right now. Great game! Really curious to see the direction nintendo has chosen for links new adventure. Rinslowe You and me both. ben My dream is they get someone like Urasawa Naoki to write the story and do some illustration work. GABRIEL GARCIA Well only 76 units separate ps4 from wii U nice !!! oontz Keep in mind this is just japan, in North America the ps4 is still outselling wiiu 3 to 1. Hopefully mk8 turns the ship around… I personally don’t feel I have seen a return on my investment yet with my deluxe wiiu day 1 purchase. But more sales equals more games! ben I hope that the Wii u can increase the sales in Japan so that more Japanese developers start to think about the Wii u as a console to develop for. Then we might get the next Demon souls type phenomenon. Shootdatrupee!… One day very soon we will receive wonderful optimistic articles that the Wii U outsold the PS4 in Japan, and though it’s only Japan we will still dance and celebrate and oh forget this Blue Hernandez Another victory for Nintendo!
