Wii U sales

This week’s Media Create numbers are in with the first look at a full week of sales in January. The Nintendo 3DS continues to perform very well, but the Wii U has dropped down from the 73k sales we saw last week down to just 14k this week. That’s a huge tumble and not something we want to see after the sustained high sales of December. Here’s a full look at the top ten software titles and hardware sales for the week.

Ouchh ! Huge drop indeed :/

  • Kholby

Huge drop for everything. That’s to be expected.

  • Petri

Nothing to get worked up about, really.
When you look at other consoles, every console had a huge drop from last week.

And aren’t January-February usually slow months for gaming all around?

    • Laud

Yep, my guess is that the PS3 beat Wii U this time because of the FFX/X-2 release, that’s also why the Vita did better than the normal 3DS.

That’s just my theory though, who knows.

      • Josiah Parsons

But the 3DS really kicked butt in software sales…

      • Rich Garriques

not the 3ds xl it still sold more then vita , and your forgetting their is 4 titles in front of final fantasy that are 3ds games that are completely outselling it.

    • That guy who hates Spike

Slow is a relative term. Sony has content coming, Microsoft has content coming.
Nintendo has nothing for Wii U for another month (at least that’s the plan. Who knows if there might be another surprise release like NES Remix).
And after that, what doesn Nintendo have next? Mario Kart 8 in April? Art Academy U at some time soon?

      • Tio Tete

Art Academy is out now. There’s Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freaze for next month. So there is content coming.

        • That guy who hates Spike

Satoru Iwata said that there was another Art Academy game coming.
DKCTF is what I was referring to, as the content coming out next month.
Even though, that’s content, that’s not satisfying content. Nintendo’s continuing to let third parties slip through their hands, and release sequels of Wii games to their system.
I’m just going to have to hope that those indie titles coming this quarter are really great and satisfying.

      • Nathan Verbois

Yes, Sony and Microsoft have content coming in March after Donkey Kong, unless you’re referring to major third party releases in January and February which are what? Tomb Raider Definitive Edition? Final Fantasy XIV? I’m not trying to knock your statement, but I follow all of the consoles and I’m unaware of any major releases for next-gen during that time frame. March is the next big release month with inFamous: Second Son and Titanfall. Big releases for last gen would be Lightning Returns and well, Dark Souls 2 in March, but even last-gen is lacking in notable releases.

      • Rocky Math

Agreed, I see dark soul 2, destiny, metal gear 5, kingdom heart, tomb raider HD. Final fantasy, latest news on hit man the lists goes on and none for Wii u, why Nintendo:(

    • Rukiafan Rukiachan

The holidays are over. naturally every console experienced big drops, troll.

      • Petri

I might live under a bridge, but that does not make me a troll, hobbit.

    • Rich Garriques

wow as usual 3ds continues to dominate.

  • Ace

    *Sigh*… Welp…. Ok.

  • Inferno Uprising

Well Thats Expected because there is a lot of people that are going to other peoples houses to play their new Wii U. So then those people will be tempted to get a wii u then.

  • Rick Valenta

To be expected post holidays, it’s all good. The big question is how did the Wii U do in North America this holiday season? This is the news I have been waiting to hear for 15 days now. Did Nintendo crush it or what?

    • Yep, we’re still waiting for this numbers, since NDP only report monthly, not weekly like Media Create.

      • Shota

you said ” That’s a huge tumble and not something we want to see after the sustained high sales of December” c’mon it was holidays. A new year start with slow sales means nothing

      • Rick Valenta

Cool. I’m pretty stoked for that article. Guess it will have to wait a few more weeks.. Pats win super bowl and Nintendo sales blew up? Is that asking too much for early February?

        • Jesse Long

Hey I’m with you on both accounts, we’ve had to many near wins and not enough super bowl rings lately, we can only hope. Also it’d be great to see the Wii U pick up momentum.

    • Nintenjoe82

I reckon they did better but not great. If they were dreadful, Michael Pachter would be all over it and if they were really good Nintendo would be talking about it.

  • crocodileman94

    still over 10k

  • PS4/WiiU

    Well obviously

  • It’s Japanese only sales.Despite it sold lower that the last week it doesn’t mean it’s selling bad in other regions(plus,it’s better to see monthly sales rather than weekly ones.Sometimes it sells lower than expected and sometime much higher,so it’s better to wait for sales number at the end of the month. Also, waiting for Nintendo Direct,if I didn’t miss it.).

  • Nostalgic_Chaos

That’s totally fine. As others have expressed, this is normal and okay around this season.
It’s a promising year still, and THIS IS the year in which the Wii U will redeem itself. Will it blow up like the 3DS did? Who knows? But, I am hopeful.

Mario Kart 8 comes out in just a few months, and I believe that it will be the best selling game on the Wii U so far, by far. I don’t need to go through a long list of all the other good titles coming out this year, because we all know that the good stuff is coming.

As I’ve said many times. The Wii U is a dark horse and will creep around the corner from the ashes with a huge amount of unexpected success, and all the developers will start licking Nintendo’s ass.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

      Licking huh? Sounds very unhealthy.

  • a huge drop in everything…

  • Gameonfool

Well no really, sales going down (for every console) after Christmas. Well I be damned.

  • Looks like a huge drop all around. Welcome to after the holidays.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Nintendomination have begun. They pulled a 3DS. Take that you haters!… eeeehm.

  • Mario 1983

Wii U will blast every console out of the water when Mario Kart 8 is released (PS4, PS Vita, soon to be Wii U owner)

    • PatcherStation

Mario Kart 8 will shift consoles, but it’ll die down straight away. Mario Kart 8 should’ve been released at the end of 2013. But releasing another Mario platformer, was a bad idea. Super Mario 3D World flopped.

      • DarkYoshi

SM3DW was perfectly recieved by reviewers, tho maybe not selling that good. It was a great release from Nintendo, nothing to regret on.

        • PatcherStation

It’s a great game. Had an idea it’d be better than the 3DS version, but there wasn’t much in it. Better graphics aside, it came with short levels, basically not much to do. I picked it up at a discount, due to low sales in the UK. I suppose Mario Galaxy 3 will be more appealing, but still, short and quick levels are not suited for most. Tropical Freeze is already being discounted in the UK, before it’s release, probably down to low pre orders. I’ll give it a go when it’s released, more so because new releases are rare on the Wii U.

          • DarkYoshi

Many games have a launch discount. And I don’t think the levels was so short, it was fitting that you didn’t have to sit 10m each level.

  • Flawless Victory

    Not shocked.

  • Gabe Hoffman

Its right after Christmas what did you expect? Everything experienced a drop off. As long as it doesn’t drop back to 2k a week Wii U will be fine. I am more curious to see how it did in the states

  • Linkus

How is this crazy amateur site that reports false news the top google search for Nintendo related news? Somebody nuke this page already. Or maybe include a tagline that says “now with 20% real news!” I hope you guys aren’t getting paid to take a shit on the Internet.

  • Elias Ruelas

    Give things time.

  • Shane

    Wii bash U daily

  • Cesar Barroso

well, if this trend continues at least we know Nintendo games will maintain the quality as always.

  • Randall Hellmer

Not such a happy week all around. Hardware down 30% from same time last year.

Wii U is definitely in a tough situation, though. Currently trending behind sales last year, though I don’t expect that to last. I do think Nintendo needs to do more for the system in Japan, though.

  • boynhisblobs

It’s January, I doubt it’s high sales for any system right now. Those numbers are also weak for both 3dsXL and Vita, both of which were much stronger in December. It’s just always doom and gloom for the Wii U. It’s very fashionable to diss the Wii U right now even though Nintendo is on top with the 3DS.

  • Jon

It’s a huge drop in everything…. not just Wii U

  • darkcreap

The WiiU is the system with the highest decline in sales vs the last week, but it is normal taking into account that it sold pretty well the previous weeks and also if we take into account that it is the first week after Christmas.

As I said in the previous weeks: “seeing good sales is nice, but we shouldn’t get too enthusiastic right now”. The same applies now: it is after christmas, so it is normal sales go down.

We will better judge the situation when new games come from February on: DK, Watchdogs, Bayonetta, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Yarn Yoshi, SMT/Fire Emblem, X (maybe), Zelda (maybe), Miyamoto’s new IP (maybe).

What is true is that the decline is more evident with the WiiU, but it is just one week sales. It is also true that more games announcements should be expected from Nintendo. We need to, at least, hear something about the “maybes” I listed and

  • Sheiky Baby

Not just a huge drop in everything.. Wii U’s drop is huge.
    “Software sells hardware”
Yes, it absolutely does… But where the fuck is the rest of the “next gen experience” software?!?! Luckily, I just purchased Wind Waker HD, and MY GOD, it this game beatiful! It definitely feels like a next gen experience to me, even though it’s a freaking remake. Nintendo needs to keep rolling more games.

I wonder if they believe that once the sales pick up, the 3rd party devs will come running back to them… If that’s their plan, we won’t be getting much..

They need to do what they did with Platinum, and bring back a ton of their huge franchises, and at the same time buy out a big 3rd party franchise for exclusivity. I love Bayonetta, but that game isn’t enough to get people talking the way RE4 did. I’m not a big FPS fan, but they should also create a FPS title that contains tons of creativity. They have all the resources in the world to change the field, but it feels like they think we all need to understand their Japanese philosophy of patience. IM AMURRICAN, DAMN IT!! GIIVVEEE MEEE MORE GAMESSSSSS!!!!!!!!

Seriously though… Hurry the fug up, Nintendo.

  • Sam

    What’s a 3DS LL?

    • GameChanger

It’s what they call a 3DS XL in Japan.

  • Joe Jack

please everyone, We can change the WiiU! Share this with your dearest friends!http://www.change.org/petitions/f-zero-wii-u

    • alex toschi

While I think the effort is put in the right place, it’s sort of wasted. Reggie himself said that petitions don’t affect how they make games or go about their buisness. “10,000 signatures doesn’t necessarily mean 10,000 sales” is how he said it I believe.

      • Joe Jack

Oh, Too Bad then… but we can still try!

  • mikeybruises

    This is not news.

  • Shaise

Then why is there an up arrow on the picture Ashley?

    • Chad Dodsworth

Yep, Its extremely misleading. Its like saying a team won the Superbowl, and showing the other teams logo.

  • Sean

    But so did everything else….

  • LevenThumps

It’s to be expected after the holidays. All the systems had a significant drop, not just Nintendo. January seems to be a slow month for all game companies.

  • iamserious

Looks like Japan is all about the portables.

  • Zizo47

The upward arrow logo for this post was very misleading -.-

  • Zuxs13

Ashley I beleieve you have the wrong “previous week” sales numbers. I think your numbers are from the week leading up to Christmas, not the week following .

the previous week numbers for the Wii U should be 51,271. (i think)

  • Patrick Starman

Crap, Wii U was doing so good!
Well, now we wait until Tropical Freeze comes out.

  • tom

I know that sales tend to drop off after the holidays but that’s super low in my opinion.

  • Leo

    Go Kirby!

  • LordiMcKill

What can you expect, gift giving season is over for another 50 weeks. Although Nintendo are still on top in the handheld department.

  • Agent721

    DK should provide new momentum…hopefully!

  • lonewolf

So Ashley does not have logical thinking seriously people don’t have money growing on trees they have had spent way too much money on black friday and now the weeks prior and the weeks during the chrstmas and new years holidays people don’t buy only games and consoles they need to feed themselves they need to buy clothes to pay taxes to pay bills its everything about games and consoles but some people are forgetting that playing their video games.

    • oontz

“they have had spent way too much money on black friday”

There is no Black Friday in Japan. That’s an american thing. Also while you make some interesting points… please note that PS3 and PSVITA sold more than wiiu during that week.

  • wiimenonowiiu

Nes needs new games cant wait for smach bros and cart8

  • Rinslowe

Still 14k is a lot better than a consistent 2k… Xmas sales tapering off is to be expected. It shows right across all platfoms. Now it’s up to Nintendo to keep the titles coming. And I can’t see why a possible 8-10k can’t be susutainable until Mario Kart 8 with DKC TF…
Hopefully the March release rumour for Kart is true.

  • Squid

    Everything drops after Christmas.

  • Wighead

I know that a drop was sure to hapen after the holidays, but dropping below the PS3 numbers, Ouch! Now I just hope that it won’t drop again and again in the next weeks and that we won’t see those 2k sales week of last year since no big games are comming out until february…

  • Mario 1983

I fully expect the Wii U to be the No1 selling console by the end of the year. Mario Kart 8 alone will make sure of that.

    • oontz

One game will NOT make that big of a difference…. everyone said Pikmin 3 would be THAT game, then it was Zelda WWHD, Then SM3DW, now it’s Mario Kart 8. Fact is who cares as long as I can buy and enjoy my Nintendo games that’s all that matters, and that’s not going to change any time soon.

      • InsaneZucchini

There’s a difference though, Pikmin has always been a more of a niche series, Zelda Wind Waker HD wasn’t well received the first time it came out and it’s just a remake now, Super Mario 3D World may be great, but go back and look at Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2, they did well but they came out after the Wii had time to build up its install base and the best selling (Galaxy 1) sold a little over 11 mil. Mario Kart is a genuine system seller, not to say the others aren’t or weren’t but nothing like Mario Kart. Mario Kart Wii sold 34 million copies. Few games can compare to that.

Mario Kart Wii: attach rate approx 1 in 3
Mario Kart Double Dash: approx 1 in 4
        Mario Kart 64: approx 1 in 3
Super Mario Kart: approx 1 in 6

Mario Kart DS, approx 1 in 7
        Mario Kart 7: approx 1 in 5

        Best Selling games on:
Playstation 3: Grand Theft Auto 5: approx 1 in 5
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: approx 1 in 6

Playstation 2: San Andreas: approx 1 in 8
Playstation: Gran Turismo: approx 1 in 9

Xbox 360: Kinect Adventures: approx 1 in 4
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: approx 1 in 6

        Xbox: Halo 2: approx 1 in 3
Halo: Combat Evolved: approx 1 in 4

Not many games actually compare to the attach rate Mario Kart games have, because people buy it up.

        • oontz

I still think one game will NOT make that big of a difference. It’ll sell well and move systems, but in response to the original posters comment of…

“I fully expect the Wii U to be the No1 selling console by the end of the year. Mario Kart 8 alone will make sure of that.”

It’s just not going to happen. Ps4 has already caught up and has been out for 2 months. The PS4 will be the best selling console this year. The wiiu hopefully second, but again all of that DOESN’T matter… cause I’ll be enjoying my PS4/Wiiu Combo for the next 5+ years.

      • Rinslowe

I don’t think anyone thought Pikmin 3 was going to be THAT game, which turned the Wii U’s situation around. But it did do it’s part in showing that Jan – Aug sales were directly related to a “software drought” and nothing much more sinister… As sales did indeed begin to pick up at that point. Then WWHD, then SM3DW and the various Xmas bundles/ sales etc…
Jan will taper down everywhere until DKC TF releases in Feb most likely. And then if Nintendo can keep to a decent schedule on 2014’s confirmed titles, sales should be consistent.
This years line-up looks “a lot” better overall than last, to top it off.

        • oontz

“I don’t think anyone thought Pikmin 3 was going to be THAT game, which turned the Wii U’s situation around.”

Many commenters on wiiudaily were stating exactly that before Pikmin 3 was released.

“This years line-up looks “a lot” better overall than last, to top it off.”

Agreed… but not enough to make the wiiu the #1 selling console this year. Still need to be realistic.

          • Rinslowe

I also don’t think it’ll be the no’ 1 console in terms of sales either. But in the big scheme of things that in itself only means something to the fanboys, right?
It’ll be the most profitable home console this year, without a doubt. Neither MS nor Sony will profit on hardware this year or next – most likely – (in regards to next..). And more importantly the experiences on Wii U this year from Nintendo – first and second party – will be exceptional, IMO – so how to quantify that exactly?

Interesting the observation about Wii U Daily posters and Pikmin 3 as Wii U’s saviour. I honestly didn’t see that. But granted I started browsing here only about that time too… If I remember correctly.

          • oontz

“I also don’t think it’ll be the no’ 1 console in terms of sales either. But in the big scheme of things that in itself only means something to the fanboys, right?”

Exactly the reason I replied to the original post.

“Interesting the observation about Wii U Daily posters and Pikmin 3 as Wii U’s saviour.”

I have observed this exact same behaviour on wiiudaily about every AAA wiiu release since Pikmin 3. I guess if you say it enough times, eventually you’ll be right.

“more importantly the experiences on Wii U this year from Nintendo – first and second party – will be exceptional, IMO”

Agreed… but there are A LOT more exceptional reasons to game on PS4

but then again that’s all a matter of opinion and nothing more. I’m going to enjoy both systems this year. Can’t wait.

  • Mario 1983

Oh and that includes the 13 Steam Box/Machines

  • SuperSonicBrawler

Well it doesn’t help that the only Wii U game listed is Super Mario 3D World. I’m pretty sure we’re all well aware of why the Wii U isn’t selling as well as Nintendo wants at this point. You need consistent game releases to have consistent sales numbers, and the people who wanted a Wii U for 3D World likely already got one for the holidays. If Nintendo wanted to keep their sales numbers up, they should have had a worthwhile game planned for release in January. To summarize, the Nintendo fans who own a Wii U right now are as followed: 2D Mario fans, and a hand full of Zelda fans who just couldn’t wait for Zelda U and bought a Wii U for Wind Waker HD. When Nintendo finally gets their act together and starts releasing good first-party Wii U games on a regular basis, then they’ll see a change in the numbers. ‘Til then, neither we nor Nintendo should be the least bit surprised by “news” such as this.

  • HypocritesRROD
  • HypocritesRROD

Xbox one isn’t even 3 months old. And yet this…

  • TalesOfBS

Where are my HD wii games? Nintendo?
GC games in HD? hello Nintendo??

  • Adam Fox

Isn’t that usually the case though? sales go up for the holidays and then drop down for awhile? Especially in the early months of the year b/c game titles aren’t coming out? Seems like all the AAA titles come out between Sept and November anyway

    • Arobadope

I was just thinking the same thing, even the PS3 saw a huge drop, and even more telling would be the 3DS’s drop in sales as well.

  • Ben English

Consoles sell vastly less in January than they do in the lead up to Christmas: film at 11.

  • Nintendoro

It’s normal. Holiday season is always best time for sales. After that it’s quiet

  • Commander Jim

I havnt seen a news article for it here yet, but:

Projected sales forecast reduced from 9 million to 2.8 million. That is really, really, incredibly, unbelievably bad. Falling short by 70% is insane. Hate to say it fellas, but I think this is the last straw, time to throw in the towel. The Wii U is officially a flop.

  • WhataShame

Yup. Another me-too, Wii U gloom and doom non-news story… because retail sales NEVER dive after the holidays. Posting sales numbers? Great. Leading with a sensational and ridiculous headline? Cheap.

  • PatcherStation

Prices between Japan, the US and Europe are jumbled up. The Wii U has a chance in Japan and the US, but not in Europe. Do the maths, £300 in Europe, that’s not far off $500. The 3DS XL can top a whopping £200, that’s around $330. Problems in all these major territories, more so pricing in Europe. Talk of dropping Wii U and 3DS game prices should be the case with all consoles anyway. £40 tops for 3DS games is laughable.

  • Mario 1983

Not having a Mario Kart 8 bundle over Christmas was a huge opportunity missed. Iwata needs to go, now. Next time Nintendo make sure the games are ready before the console is released, or at least on their way SOON.
