Nintendo president Satoru Iwata won’t be attending E3 next week on advice from his physician, according to a report from Polygon. The specific reasoning behind the physicians advice was not given, but the 54 year-old Iwata was advised not to travel overseas in the immediate future.

Despite this, according to Nintendo of America, it’s business as usual for Iwata, who will continue his normal duties for the company while he remains in Japan. According to one representative, he will continue to remain actively involved in all of Nintendo’s duties at the show.

“As always, he will be actively involved in all of Nintendo’s activities at the show.”

If the man is sick, then all the more power to him. I’d rather he get better than risk it just to come here.

  • Little Seal

    Well,that was unexpected…
I just want to state that Reggie Fils-Aime would be an Wonderful President Master of Nintendo of Everwhere

    • xPhoenixMoon

Please god no, have any of you people who actually hype up Reggie so much met the guy in person? I did once waiting in line at Nintendo World, the guy is an asshole. Interviewers will tell you the same thing, he’s just so smug and arrogant at times.

I get that the meme’s and such are what made him so popular but it still doesn’t make him a better person. I wish I was joking but you ask the guy one wrong question and he turns on you quicker than a rabid dog, I really don’t like Reggie at all.

What I really don’t like about the guy is he runs a gaming company but he is not a gamer or even cares that much about games, nothing he has done in the past was ever with anything of the sort, the guy is just a good salesman and nothing more.

I really wish people knew how he actually is instead of just taking his internet persona so seriously all the time but oh well, maybe one day you’ll see exactly what I mean if you do meet the guy.

      • Phil Spencer is Arrogant, same with the Sony President.

      • “Sean” jjbredesen

I am sure a lot of people are not how they seem, but his job is to sell Nintendo, so yeah i guess you are right.

      • steve

i thought the same thing, hes incredibility unpersonable. he is nothing more than a salesmen. im sure when he worked for hieniken beer he was praising beer as well.

      • Daniel Carvalho

I remember one of his interviews where he kept saying “consumers” over and over again, while in another interview on the same subject Iwata kept saying “gamers” instead. I really can’t see someone who runs a gaming company yet calls gamers “consumers” instead of the appropriate word for it (we love being called gamers, don’t we?) can do better than Iwata.

To give the man a little bit of credit, he may actually do better than Iwata in the US territory. He knows how to approach “consumers” better with his marketing strategies, specially because he lives there, while Iwata is just misleadingly trying to apply his Japanese ways in another country whose culture he knows almost nothing about. But regarding the rest of the world, I highly doubt Reggie would do a good job. Just like Iwata isn’t fit to rule the American part of the company, I doubt Reggie would do any good for the European, Japanese or even South American territories.

I never liked Reggie’s attitude ever since he first came up with the “I’m all about kicking butts” thing. I like Nintendo’s humble yet wise front better than the arrogant one Reggie stands for. I am with you on that one, Reggie seems to have gotten his popularity more from the image created by all those memes out there than from his own accord.

I always watch the Japanese Nintendo Directs instead of the American ones, because I get to actually enjoy the way Iwata delivers his messages.

      • Purple

        Thank YOU!
Reggie and Iwata are crap. Reggie is retarded. He is not a gamer. His greatest accomplishment was The Big Foot Pizza. He has not helped Nintendo one bit. He lied. He said we’d get all the great 3rd party support. Well where is it?! Nintendo is a joke in the eyes of the gaming community now a days. it’s horrible.

Iwata is …. I don’t know… I must be the only person who did not like the Nintendo DS or The Wii after Twilight Princess… and I thought the Wii U would be different but it’s not .. It might as well be the Wii in HD. it sucks. The 3DS is the only thing that’s all right.. its got some great games but even the 3D is a waste ! they should of made it HD and added a 2nd Thumb Stick!! where are the FPS? oh that’s right they can’t be done on 3DS so there aren’t any.

I just haven’t been happy with Nintendo since N64.

    • Officer Raichu
      • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

Yup. Reggie of course. I Really want to See Iwata but his Health and Sakurai isn’t English and he’s busy with SSB4. Reggie is the only one I know that Go’s to the E3 and that Speaking English.

        • Officer Raichu

Sakouri can learn English IMO he knows the ps4 ways of succeeding he knows it has the games and advertising I think he can bring that to nintendo if he was in charge

          • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

But How in that Short Time?

          • Officer Raichu

well you can also use a translater person

          • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

            but it’s nothing for a E3 Presentation.

  • Yousif Alromaithi

Hope he gets well. Man e3 without Iwata saying please understand is hopeless.

  • Rich Garriques

hope he gets well that sounds pretty serious.

  • Francis Jairam

    “Please Understand”

    • crocodileman94

      This time, I actually do.

  • kopaka7

Hopefully he will use Nintendo’s Quality of Life platform to get better soon.

    • xPhoenixMoon

LOL.. So cruel but I couldn’t help but laugh.

      • The Wolf 47

Here I tough the Fanboys was the scariest thing at E3.

        • “Sean” jjbredesen

The scariest thing at E3 is “Please understand”

          • linkzero65

And a reboot of this :

          • ETMew2348

that was a great game! e.e

          • “Sean” jjbredesen

            *SUCKS MY SOUL OUT

          • Maxwell Baumgarten

The words resonate in my soul as the grandest disappointment ever to have been uttered by man or deity.

          • “Sean” jjbredesen

lol, it sure is the only thing i am afraid of at E3 xD

      • kopaka7

Sorry, it was too good to pass up on.

    • matthew garcia

Could be from stress. This gen has been tough on Nintendo

      • iamserious

        And specifically on him.

    • kopaka7

He might also do better to eat his fruits and vegetables instead of staring at them.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

That’s unfortunate. Not a fan of him, but I don’t wish bad health on anyone. Get well, Iwata and leave luck to heaven.

    • Ducked

Hopefully this doesn’t have anything to do with that 666% sales increase in the UK lol

      • “Sean” jjbredesen

I guess his body was not ready for Satan 🙁

        • Ducked

What idiot makes a deal with the devil? Oh wait…I see why people want Reggie…

      • ETMew2348

        666% sale increase and Luigi’s death stare……

  • Kobe

I wouldn’t say I’m happy that he won’t be at E3, but it’s cool that we might have more Reggie this year.

  • palomino blue

I hope he’s not scared to death.

  • Kobe

And hopefully it’s not too serious

  • “Sean” jjbredesen

If i was him i would be depressed and sick, and perhaps a bit scared xD, he has got a lot of shit from people over the last years. (Including me) And being the CEO of a company is extremely draining, and you sit a lot in a office, so its not good for your health :/

    Get well soon!

  • Marlon Frijters

Iwata!! Your body is NOT ready. Get better soon!

  • Mr Ninty

dammit the ‘please understand’ and ‘my body is not ready’ jokes are already taken :(. eeuuh luigi death stare taks it first victim it is. but serously hope he gets better soon.

  • ZeldaFan83

I truly hope he gets better. Everyone gives him a lot of shit but he is a very smart man and knows how to run a company better than most out there. Get better Iwata.

  • That guy who hates Spike

Ironic. The CEO of Nintendo America, can’t go to America.

    • umm Reggie is CEO of NoA. Iwata is president

      • That guy who hates Spike

No. Reggie is President and COO of Nintendo America, while Iwata is CEO.

  • Mr. J

On one hand I’m not happy that he’s sick…..but on the other hand I’m happy that we won’t have any “Please understands.”

  • SmashFinale

Looks like Reggie and Miyamoto are taking over E3.
Prepare the My Body Is Ready jokes.

  • Cédric Theys

Everyone thinking that there will be no ”Please understand”, think again. Probably some Miyamoto or even Eiji saying: “We are not showing Zelda U this year. Please understand.”

    • Daniel Carvalho

“Please, understand. Final Fantasy 7 HD will not be coming for any console other than the Wii U!”

      What?! We could dream…

      • linkzero65

“but as we like to lisent to our fans. we refused.”
“but don’t worry we have this new miley cyrus twerk U coming this holiday”

        • Daniel Carvalho

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo did that trying to get the casual gamers again… they’ve done a lot of mistakes trying to get the casuals back ever since the Wii U came out on the market, it wouldn’t be really surprising if they did something stupid again…

    • Cédric Theys

KH3 and FF is just what the Wii U needs

  • Sdudyoy

The way I see it is if your sick, than you can’t do it.

  • So you guys below me that think there is not going to be any “Please Understands” Do you think the Digital event is not pre-recorded? Do you think these Directs are Live?

The digital event is not specified as being live. If reggie is going to be at E3, how are we going to see him Sitting in his office in the digital event?

we will hear at least 1 Please Understands.

  • Mayoo

I, and many of us, may not agree with many of his last decisions but this is sad news. Get better quickly Iwata, you have our support.

  • bistricky

All jokes aside …. not knowing if this is something more serious or not ….. I am sure Iwata has been working his ass off to turn the fate of Nintendo and the Wii U around ….. and the pressure to save his job and his reputation. I send my prayers to him that he may get better and see the fortunes of his company that he represents grow for the better. Cheers 😀

  • Nintendo’s digital event is pre-recorded, isn’t it? So would i be wrong in assuming there is still a chance that we’ll see Iwata during the E3 showing even if he isn’t physically present?

    • Alejandro Castillo

  • Alejandro Castillo

What kind of illness prevents travel like that?

    • Purple

Cancer, kidney failure. Only things I can think of. But he probably has a common cold and is using it as an excuse.

      • C4

Hopefully it’s just a cold oO

    • C4

If he has a virus or something the doctor will recommend to recover before traveling – you don’t want it to get worse especially since Iwata is 54 years old and unlike a flue you can’t fully recover within a few days. Most people just don’t listen to doctors advice… but since their’s not real press conference why risk something.

    • Maxwell Baumgarten

Especially anything that is contagious and could spread to people in a close environment i.e. airplane

  • wober2

I wonder if he knows his days are numbered. I wish him the best but maybe this is the start of a new era for nintendo.

  • AM Real

Oh man, I hope it’s not serious and Iwata gets better soon.

  • BGhp

    Get well soon!

    • PS4Rocks

      That one was priceless

  • Will the3rd

    Get well soon, President!
As the events for the public were going to be through videos, his absence is only going to be noticeable for the press present (and the few fans), so I don’t see if it can really affect Nintendo somehow. I just hope the others that go do it well, haha ^^

  • Aleks

Well thats disconcerting:/ i would think, unless his arms where just chopped off, he would be there to stand with his company! Doctors be damned. This IS an important event. He’s had his time, but this more than anything tells me it is high time he step aside and let someone else actively move Nintendo forward.

  • DoctorFart

    Give him a Maxim Tomato

    • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

Heart Container or Fairy Bottle is Better.

      • SmashFinale

Well he was the president of Hal Labs before he was Nintendo’s so that actually works out better for him.

        • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

  • Aww, I’ll miss him. Get better soon, buddy 🙂

    • “Sean” jjbredesen

Will a heart container help him?

      • Daniel Carvalho

I have a Red Potion, Blue Potion, Green Potion, X-Potion, FullCure Materia, Phoenix Down, Concoction, Heal Staff, Green Mushroom, Energy Tank, Save Station, and there’s an Inn close to where I live. Think any of this could help?

        • SmashFinale

Everything BUT Maxim Tomato. Dang. Dude was Hal Labs president at one point.

      • Ghost8484

        Your silly dude!!

        • jjbredesen

          Thank you 😀

          • Ghost8484

I tried to follow u on here..

          • jjbredesen

Thanks. i have now made my profile public so its possible to follow me again 😉

      • it better!

  • Zach Cruz

    His Body isn’t READY!

  • PS4Rocks

Well maybe it’s time to retire mr Iwata…Please Understand!

  • Zanzama

This time I actually DO understand

  • Purple

Its okay iwata, I unda stan!

  • anthony optimo

That’s unfortunate, Iwata seems legitimate regardless of what negative things people say about him.

  • Marioman21

wish him the best on his health.

  • Frankie

As I doubt it and am making that clear before I say it. This could be a start for Iwata to step down. There is a lot of pressure on him to step down. If he starts saying he has health issues now, in the future he could step down due to health reasons and not because he thinks he has failed.

  • TheSkeletonMan939 .

Iwata’s done a great job overall; the 3DS is selling like hotcakes. He’s probably just very stressed out by everything.

  • Squid

Feel better Iwata! I hope Reggie does well!

  • 00EpicGamer00

I hope Iwata gets better. Though, I wonder who’s going to host the show then…..I hope it’s Reggie. 🙂

    • Each Developer should showcase their own game, Miyamoto for his IP, Aonouma for Zelda, Hideki for Bayonetaa 2 so forth.

      • 00EpicGamer00

Agreed. But what I meant was Reggie would just be hosting the show. Of course each individual developer should showcase their own game.

  • tronic307

We wish you a speedy recovery, Iwata-san.

  • paulthevgking

can he please make a video saying “Please Understand”

  • Kenshin0011

    His body was not ready…

  • Kenshin0011

Actually, what if this is all a ploy to introduce the new Nintendo “Quality of Life”? What if Iwata does show up outfitted as an immortal android that is indestructible and has super human strength?

“Please understand, that I am now your God and ruler”

    • J_Joestar

      I’d buy it.

    • Ice Climbers

What if they partnered with Disney/Marvel and invented super soldier serum?

  • It sucks for him, but personally I’m glad I don’t want to see him anymore. I’m sick of him.

  • FutureFox

Iwata: Please understand, my body isn’t ready for the quality of life.

  • Tron Javolta

Usually it’s something pretty serious if the doctor insists you do not travel. I mean, it could just be flu or something so it doesn’t spread, but let’s all hope this is something he can get over. That OR this could be a way of Nintendo moving him out the door and this is just the beginning. I hate to say that, but there could be something going on that we don’t know about.

  • Although I do not agree with some of the decisions Iwata has made, I do not like to hear this. I feel sorry for him, hopefully he will get better asap. Hang in there Iwata. Take care and become fully healthy again soon.

  • Fuzzylittlebastard

I hate to say this, but I kind of hope that this leads to him stepping down. Now for a long time I have been thinking that we need a new CEO, someone young who knows what the new generation wants. I just hope that he steps down BECAUSE of heath reasons, only that he gets better and decides to step down.

  • Chuck Norris 2.0

Reggie being announced for president of Nintendo at E3?

  • Ghost8484

Man I just hope he gets well soon. I know a lot of people joke about a lot of things and I think tht health is pretty serious.

  • leo

Well its not like he does anything besides saying “please understand” while he gives us delays

  • Will W

    I guess he’s not “Wii – Fit”.

    • Logan Wayman

You could’ve put sunglasses on and when you said the pun there should be a “YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

  • ben

Iwata got advised that a lot of American game journalists asking stupid questions might be bad for his health. Can’t blame him for taking that sound advise.

WiiU can’t surpass PS4 sales even with MK8, what a fail console.

    • TheBoldman67

What’s up with all of the up-votes? I mean, this is a negative comment, normally people around here rip you a new one for saying stuff like that on here.

      • Daniel Carvalho

Read again, 129 Guest Votes. It wouldn’t be any surprise if he managed to somehow hack the Disqus code to alter the number of vote ups.

Don’t worry, people will start downvoting him and he’ll be back to bottom, where he belongs. If an admin finds his post suspicious, it me even be erased.

        • darkcreap

I already flagged it. I like trolls, but funny ones. This is trolling is boring man. Make something original. Obvious troll is obvious.

        • J_Joestar

yeah, there are apparently bots that go around and upvote anti-nintendo comments on various sites that use Disqus

          • Daniel Carvalho

Not only Nintendo comments, but it’s not rare going into a site with Disqus and seeing a troll comment with hundreds of guest upvotes, even though the site isn’t popular enough to have so many readers – specially so many readers that would agree with that kind of harsh comment.

Somehow hackers managed to crack the code of Disqus and started upvoting themselves in many sites out there, not only Nintendo related ones. As proof people on this site don’t agree with him, even though he has 133 Guest Votes he is under a comment with 27 votes, which means he received at least 106 downvotes from the Wii U Daily readers.

      • Officer Raichu

he did that on cinemablend to trolling nintendo with his 124 fake likes

  • Hmm….

  • Andre R

yes, dont like hm, he is pulling the company down

  • Broku78

Mr Iwata I hope get will soon

  • Pinky Peach

Are you guys really being this disrespectful for Iwata???? What a disappointment…..

    • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

      I’m Not!!!

    • Officer Raichu

I’m not I hope he gets better

    • Bob Charlie

What, like 10 people made very small jokes about his health? Most comments are positive, but you’re crying about it all over WiiUDaily. You’re a dissapointment, Peach……..

  • Cédric Theys

NOA: “Mr. Iwata will not be attending E3 this year. Please understand.”

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

AI Hope you will be better Iwata. But Who will Lead the Nintendo E3 Presentation?

  • iamserious

I hope this isn’t a bad sign for what’s to come. First 666% increase in sales in UK now Iwata is calling in sick for E3. Hope he gets better but I really hope us Nintendo fans are not let down in the next couple of days. I don’t wanna have to call in sick too!

  • Cyntheta Luis

I hope his okay, taking pay cuts and stuff must brought him down, at least Mario Kart sales is raising. Hope that gave him a boost.

  • Very sad comments here. How low can you go?
