President Satoru Iwata has been speaking at B Dash Camp Osaka 2013 about Nintendo’s outlook on its business models and where the company sees itself in the gaming industry. He also spoke briefly about making series like Pokemon successful in Western markets. It’s an interesting interview that provides a good insight into how the current president of Nintendo thinks of his own company. “When we talk about Nintendo we cannot ignore (former president) Hiroshi Yamauchi who just recently passed away. He always said that if you have failure, you don’t need to be too concerned. You always have good things and bad, and this reflects the history of Nintendo.” Iwata also spoke of innovation and finding their own path in the crowded gaming industry, which is something that has set Nintendo apart from the rest of the world for several years now. “If you do the same thing as others, it will wear you out. Nintendo is not good at competing so we always have to challenge [the status quo] by making something new, rather than competing in an existing market.” We’ve known for some time that Nintendo marches to the beat of its own drum, but even long time fans of the company are starting to become disillusioned with the long delay for Wii U games, even while the Nintendo 3DS continues to succeed. Speaking of bringing franchises like Pokemon to the Western world, Iwata says that’s a status quo that was challenged as well, since it was believed that Americans wouldn’t accept cute monsters. “Will America accept cute monsters? No, they said. Some people even recommended to make Pikachu more muscular. If we followed their advice Pokémon would never have been the success that it was.” Overall, it looks like Iwata has ideas for his company, but he’s continually challenged at every turn. What do you think of these statements. Do you agree? Iwata is a polarizing figure for many, since some believe he’s responsible for a lot of good within the company, but others feel he should be replaced. Let us know what you think. I love you, Nintendo. Prince_AKR Yeah, that one really caught me off guard. I wouldn’t expect him to just come up and say that. Bold Iwata…Not bad. Alexander Kleinwechter Thats, what makes nintendo so special, they are innovative, and they never steal ideas like microsoft and sony do! Lil J Moore Love them or hate them. Respect is one thing you need to show Nintendo. Benny Yeah man they got my respect. Gregg Iwata rocks. Love the WiiU and Nintendos amazing 1st party library. Why the heck would I want another generic PSBOX?! Isn’t 2 enough Nintedward Playstation and Xbox are really just crappy PC’S with the odd awesome exclusive. Nintendo is Nintendo completely unique to the rest of the pack, which in my eyes makes them a more attractive buy. I don’t want the same pair of Nike’s that everyone is wearing, I’ll take a nice pair of Puma. Edit- I apologize for the crappy shoe analogy :/ Truth is I have 2 pairs of Nike’s and no Puma XD and I’m getting a PS4 to go with my Wiiu lol… I was just making a point 😛 MujuraNoKamen Agreed, I like all consoles/companies (maybe not EA but who does?) and see myself as a open-minded and impartial gamer (all companies/consoles have their pros and cons) but I like Nintendo the most. I think Iwata summed things up pretty well in saying “If you do the same thing as others, it will wear you out.” look at the hit Sony took with PS3 trying to keep up with HD technology – It’ll be a similar story with PS4. To the average consumer looking for a new console they’ll have a choice between PS4 and XBone, whereas if you want innovation and creativity you HAVE to go with Wii U. sharlo galmo Nintedward, i have play on the PS4 and Xbox One, is not that special like the media and some fanboys saying. Bayonetta 2 and Mariokart can go head to head with the PS4 and Xbone games i have played. I have play Cod Ghost on a PC,and i looks waaaaay better then every PS4 and Xbone game i have play and i have see…. Nintedward Interesting dude, interesting! I can see off of the internet that Mario Kart 8 looks entirely next gen and easily goes head to head with Xbone and PS4. I’m getting a PS4 to play games like Metal gear V and future GTA’s the odd sony exclusive etc that I can’t get on my MAIN beauty of a console, the Nintendo Wiiu. Wiiu and 3DS is my thang. PS4 will be there to do the rest. (I can afford it so why not sort o thing….) Marcus Navarro All I wanna know is if MK8’s more fun than ModNation Racers. sharlo galmo For sure it is more fun, and it looks 20 times better! sharlo galmo I also gonna get a PS4 or a Xbone, but now i have play it, i don’t need it for a while. Cause it is realy not better then i thoug it was. Do you now that every game we play on the WiiU only use 1 core of the three? Do you now what that means? Look at some games from now, how nice and sweet it looks and plays. Wait till the WiiU gonna use the second one and all three cores, that will be epic believe me. Games gonna looks six or maybe eight times better then what we see now. Did’nt you read what Slighty Studios saying about the Wiiu version of Project Cars? The WiiU version of Project Cars gonna use almost all special effects from a high end pc, and they don’t use all core. We gonna see alot of great games at the end of next year. The media is lying about the WiiU,it is to Nintendo to bringi the games with nice and sweet grafisch,so everybody who hate can shut up! Mercurio2054 wel i can’t afford the ps4 so my beauty is my wii u Marcus Navarro Go to drjays.com or plndr.com for fresh shoes ‘n stuff. I love going against the grain in a good way. Nikes? Jordans? NOPE! Android Hommes, son! Mercurio2054 i don’t get it here. Marcus Navarro I thought PLNDR does worldwide shipping, does it not? MetroidZero Where in God’s green earth are these thumbs-downs coming from? Holy Iwata. Justagamer Keep the path nintendo…You are the best in gaming and all the others are secondary Zorpix One thing you gotta admit, Nintendo knows who they are, and aren’t going to change it. I like that in a company Justagamer Have you played rayman legends yet? Is it any good crocodileman94 Best 2D Platformer on the WiiU so far. Lil J Moore As a big time Mario lover I hate to admit this but Rayman Legend is the best 2d platformer on the WiiU as of now. Daniel Gonzalez I have to say I prefer Rayman Legends over Mario games, but that’s just me with the exception of Mario Kart and Smash games. Nintedward Well Rayman Legends certainly trumps NSMBU and NSMB2 but does it trump Mario Galaxy 1 and 2? Absolutely HELL NO. I suppose we should compare side scrolers to sides scrolers and 3D platformers to 3D platformers… Daniel Gonzalez No one is comparing. Also, what does my preferences have to do with which is better? I think you misread. Fred Yes it’s an incredible game. DON’T ALLOW YOURSELF TO MISS OUT! Zorpix I have actually. It’s phenominal. Ashley did a great job reviewing it on this very site. AAAkabob One of the best games out this year Brennero Pardo Centanaro Excellent game, have to this but it beats NSMBW.. waaay better ezquimacore It’s good, but DK is better Mitch Hall I’ve heard that it’s excellent, but unfortunately, I don’t really have time to play it right now. Pokemon will probably take up most of my spare time during the next few months, not to mention I just bought Xenoblade. bizzy gie If there is another gaming crash, Nintendo will survive it. Other platforms rely heavily on 3rd party support. Plus the other platforms are much more powerful. Due to the more powerful hardware of the others, game development will get more expensive as time passes and game prices will either rise or developers will begin to go. In the event of the latter, the other platforms will cease to exist due to no game support. Due to Wii U’s weaker hardware, development will cost as much as current gen and since Nintendo has survived a whole generation on just their exclusives alone, Wii U will have a strong library of games even if there are no more 3rd parties. Nintendo always does their own thing and would not follow the trend of ending game development. Nintendo would outlive another group of consoles. Then eventually, after Nintendo has saved the gaming industry a second time, new hardware makers will make new consoles to compete and Nintendo will have new competitors to outlive. Majora’s Mask nintendo till the wii had the best hardware but because of the poor sales they reduced it but the reasons you said arent why console gaming is dying its because pc is just better it has more compatibility with everything most if not all of your friends have a pc and not to mention free games like lol and tf2 Nintendo will live because of their software its unique and not to mention exclusive to nintendo otherwise nintendo would have died long ago btw i am writing on my wii u now SUPPORT NINTENDO bizzy gie PC is more expensive and more complicated than console. Daniel Gonzalez Steambox may change that. Zorpix Let’s hope so. I really want to like PC gaming Daniel Gonzalez Same. If it wasn’t for corrupted files and just the little things that may hurt performance, I’d invest more in PC. I’m counting on Valve to change that. I trust that they’ll deliver a good product. I’ll go as far to say that Valve is the Nintendo of PC gaming. Zorpix or the fear of not being able to run something you buy. Valve and Nintendo should team up. They’d be unstoppable. Daniel Gonzalez I would prefer them separate since they run in different circles. I can’t imagine Nintendo trying their hand in the PC market. They perhaps could do a publishing partnership with exclusives. That would be interesting. Zorpix That’s more what I meant Daniel Gonzalez Was just looking for clarification. It would be a unique type of partnership. To my knowledge, I don’t think Valve has ever ported any of their games to a Nintendo console. david jarman Here’s the thing people are over looking. Vavle’s steambox is dependent on your pc. It runs and streams through your pc. The low end model will most likely be around $700 and you have to have a decent pc that matches it’s required specs. It’s not a console. It’s a device used to stream your pc games from your pc to your tv. If you knew this already I apologize. Daniel Gonzalez I did. It’s all good. Though, Valve has mentioned a cheaper alternative and I don’t know if they scrapped the idea or if it’s still in the works. I guess we’ll see. david jarman I love valve. I can’t wait to hear whats going on with them. They were doing open beta testing with a lot of pc gamers and I thought that was pretty cool for them to do. bizzy gie Maybe, but we’ll have to see prices first. Daniel Gonzalez Of course. I would hope the price is reasonable. Jon I don’t really get the appeal for the steambox really, Why spend more money on a box to play games which you can already play for free (or at no extra cost I should say)? Really I see this only appealing to those who do not have steam already or if there are games exclusive to the steambox and not the overall steam program. It just doesn’t make sense to me to send a few hundred dollars just to be able to play the games I can already play without needed to play that and on my TV if I wish. Mercurio2054 eherm… use some “,” and “.” i can’t read you very well. computers have always been more powerful, and more compatible. . . Daniel Gonzalez Mmmm….not that compatible They run into issues more often than consoles. Zorpix I like you. You make sense Mercurio2054 @Daniel Gonzalez Look this comment… 316 is to much. Daniel Gonzalez Thank you. Didn’t see this one. Yeah, that is quite an inflated amount. Mercurio2054 lets exaggerate! WIIUDAILY IS UNDER ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @ashly DarkLegacy So what are we gonna do now since everyone’s got a load of downvotes like 300 and 200? Daniel Gonzalez Not much, It’s up to admins to deal with it. I just ignore it and go about my day. DarkLegacy I’d pretty much do the same thing too MetroidZero I THINK what you are saying–for clarification to the 317 thumbs-downers–is that Nintendo’s image isn’t going to change: they will always be that innovative, quality company in the gaming world, and you like it that way. Edit: Perhaps that was what you were saying, and a stampede of trolls/haters thumbs-downed your comment. Idk. Mercurio2054 i think the’s some error in the vote system. Yobrolo “Nintendo doesn’t fear failure” lucky or thy would be shitting their pants right now. nexxus6 I have never been disappointed with any of my Nintendo purchases, and I have no regrets in my WiiU purchase. My question is why do so many third company parties fail to develop for the WiiU or deny WiiU owners DLC,etc? They will always say “small install base”, however, these same third party companies develop games for the Vita, which has abysmal sales. After talking with other Nintendo supporters, it almost seems as if there is something else that drives such companies to neglect Nintendo other than sales…. blindtiger sony and xbox cater to third parties because they cant make first party games like nintendo… nintendo doesnt care to cater to third parties. nintendo demands innovation in their software through its hardware. third parties would rather make a graphics driven game for two consoles (and pc) than make a gameplay driven game just for nintendo. its easier and less risky to develop for ps/xbox/pc. the interesting thing here is the wii u pro controller and the gamepad button configuration. both are industry standard control schemes. third parties could easily port their games. all they have to do is make a map/inventory screen on the gamepad and add off-tv play. it doesnt have to have crazy touch screen controls. some companies like ubisoft do try to innovate, with some mixed results. rayman is awesome. zombiu and splintercell are close but not quite there. the potential is obvious to all but fanboys. nintendo makes a lot of great games. if third parties want to compete on a nintendo platform they have to work really hard to make something worth buying and keeping forever. its been like that from the beginning. nintendo reinvented the industry and contolled it through the snes. sega fought hard but eventually bowed out. sonys success was built on third parties. nintendo continued to do “their thing” with cartridges on N64. sony wooed third parties with cds bringing it closer to pcs. sony killed it again with dvd playback in the ps2 and showed the world it was here to stay. nintendo tried to compete with the gamecube but it was clear they werent going to win a power race with sony and newcomer microsoft. so they went back to “their own thing” with the wii. it was a huge success and they outsold each of the hardcore graphics consoles but not both combined. wii had huge porting problems, from new motion control to gamecube hardware. there was no chance for serious third party ports. and now theres wii u. its hardware power may not be what ps4 and xboxone will have but its much closer than the wii was to its competition. it has motion control options but the procontroller allows for easy porting. it has touch control options but all you really need is a map/inventory if you dont want to do anything creative. it has full online capability and a hard drive. nintendo and its fans are new to much the wii u offers and it offers a lot. the install base will grow. online play will get better. stores are stupid for slashing wii u game prices so fast. as people buy the system theyll buy some of the exceptional older games and now for so little money. new system owners would easily pay full price for some of these games. but dont tell the stores that. a lot of us are enjoying it. third parties really have no excuses to keep wii u owners out. they are just scared because of what happened on the wii. nintendo is the only one who could get any graphics or solid gameplay out of that thing. but wii u is different. its everything the wii should have been and more. devs just need to have the vision to see its potential to create something amazing. until then just give me the “best” third party games, ie the very most popular. cod madden gta. dont cut things out. then everyone loses. give me an honest port. you could try somethin different or just keep it the same, wii u gives devs that option. ill be playin nintendo games (and some ubi) mostly until (the rest of) the third parties come up with somethin i cant live without… Jump’nShootMan I think that some of it might have to do with the 3rd party devs’ relationship with Microsoft and Sony. Because they are similar systems and there are a ton out there, they provide more bang for the buck, development-wise. Some of the lack of support for WiiU–or the fact that games are often missing features that PS4 and XBox have–might be due to the fact that the companies don’t want to damage their relationships with MS and Sony since that’s where they make their money right now. If they produce games for the WiiU with full feature sets plus awesome gamepad features and OffTV play, that would mean that WiiU would have the definitive version of all of their games. But I don’t think MS and Sony would take kindly to that, so instead of delaying the other releases a bit to allow for the extra dev time for the gamepad features, etc., they just release the gimped WiiU version. Marius Valasinas love my Wii U. Currently playing Zelda W.W.HD, waiting for another 3 pre-ordered games on it. I Love Nintendo’s spirit, but I wish they took some examples from their competitors too. Wii U may be powerful enough to have gorgeous graphics but that’s not enough. My concerns are: No adult PEGI 18 1st party games, Wii U menu (no themes or wallpapers to personalize the way I want it to look), Online profiles can’t be passed from one system to another, games can’t be installed to HDD to prevent disc drive usage, no achievement system, Wii U’s and it’s game pad’s gloss finish (cleaning fingerprints and dust every damn day since day one)…. Benny Hey man r u o.k. Agent721 I feel the same way. I grew up with Nintendo and love their games, but I now game on all systems as I dont want to miss out on the GTAs, Red Deads, Battlefields, etc…that Nintendo seems to shun. Nintendo needs to realize that part of its audience has grown up & now enjoys adult entertainment as well as kids stuff. Majora’s Mask Me too i want all the other games but nintendo doesnt have them still waiting mario kart 8 that will make me Worship the wii u if they do online multiplayer right and add pro controller support PREPARE TO GET PWNED William Short I understand that people grow up but Nintendo is basically the only FAMILY FRIENDLY company in the Gaming industry now, that what everyone is forgetting. I don’t mind if nintendo doesn’t release Pegi 18 Cero D or Mature 18 games, i can get that already on the other systems and if 3rd party company release it then I’ll have on Wii U. Agent721 True, but due to this I am also Sony & Microsoft customer, as Ive had too look to other vendors to buy all the games I want. No loss for me, but it is a loss for Nintendo as my dollars go elsewhere. Mark Who knows, Miyamoto’s new IP could be that PEGI 18, ESRB M rated, Cero D game, but I have a feeling it’s gonna be a tier or two lower. Lil J Moore Geez what’s with all the thumbs down? Daniel Gonzalez I don’t know. New trend perhaps? Benny Yeah you gotta love and like what Nintendo is doing for the gaming universal. Nintedward Ahhhhhhh *sips victory wine* All those IDIOTS who wrote the ”Nintendoomed” articles suck on this. It’s what I’ve said about 100 times. If the Wiiu doesn’t set the world alight like the Wii did that doesn’t mean Nintendo is just going to buckle and give up. They will just come back stronger. Nintendoomed lol. what a good joke that was by all the so called professional game journalist’, noobs… WOAH what’s with all the Downvoats??????? something fishy going on there. This comment had like 0 downvoats last time I checked. Martijn Plasmans When Nintendo again doenst reach their goals for sold consoles, then they know they have to do their best more, which is a good thing for Wii U owners and good for Nintendo. Benny Is business bro. Donaald Just goes to show you that all the nintendoomed crap was merely wishful thinking, they all claimed Nintendo will go third party by 2015, they seem desperate to see good games on their pieces of plastic. Daniel Gonzalez To me, whether they succeed or fail doesn’t matter. Companies come and go and someday, Nintendo might leave. We don’t know the future. 20 years from now, we may have three new competitors, and Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft will be long forgotten to the new breed of gamers. I don’t call this doomed, though. I call it reality of business. It may or may not happen. We’ll see years from now. Marcus Navarro We can always speculate based on past events leading up to now, current events and changes though. Speculation is fun. Daniel Gonzalez Of course it is. I just have fun taking a guess on the future. TV shows and movies do it often. The_Last_Metroid No offence man, but why are you so skeptical all the time? I see your comments on almost every article and agree with many things you say, but try being a bit more positive for a change. Daniel Gonzalez Well my friend. If you do so as you claim, then you’d see positive comments as well. I don’t know how you missed those, but I digress. The article in question didn’t bring out the positive side of me. My comments vary from article to article. Nothing more. No offense taken. It’s all good. Marcus Navarro The hell? Looks like the most pro-Nintendo comments were just hit with a downvote bomb. Mercurio2054 looks like that. or a bod can do that with an ip change/cookie cleaner. Daniel Gonzalez Or people were genuinely downvoting it. Either one is possible. I think that’s the most I’ve seen in one pro Nintendo comment. It’s not surprising though. Comments like sipping victory wine, and calling people noobs aren’t going to really win anyone over. It just makes the commentator look childish. It’s cool to love Nintendo, but it’s another to be obnoxious about it. Marcus Navarro Your hypothesis would hold water if Zorpix’s comment didn’t have approx. 1.7x the amount of downvotes as Nintendward’s comment. Zorpix was simply stating his opinion on Nintendo’s self-awareness. Edit: It also happened all at once. No way 317 or 182 people were on this article and simultaneously downnvoted each comment. Either it was coordinated or someone had a bot. Daniel Gonzalez which one? Marcus Navarro This one… Daniel Gonzalez I see Nintendward’s comments. Some reason I don’t see Zorpix’s. Mercurio2054 i mention you in another comment and all i can see is a hash and not your name. Mercurio2054 yes but 180 IN THIS COMMENT AND 200+ IN HIS OTHER COMMENT? Daniel Gonzalez Yeah, I do agree. It is suspicious. Nintedward People genuinely downvoating it are you serious? Someone has hacked it or something…. My comments very very very rarely get more downvoats than they do up. Especially not 20 up to 200 down lol. Someone is trolling big time. Daniel Gonzalez I already backtracked on a previous comment, so you’re a bit late. Lol. Also, even though you may not like to hear this, sometimes you do deserve some of those with your obnoxious comments at times. Most of your comments are fine to me, but you do go a bit overboard at times. While I agree 200 is a bit nuts, you deserve your fair share at times, but I digress. I do agree with the last part for sure. Someone is apparently trolling you a little, as well as Zorpix. Dunno about others. I do have to ask this though, what does it matter really? Are upvotes that important to you? Far as I’m concerned, the system is abused to begin with, so I wouldn’t be against seeing it go. In any case, it’s no worry to me if someone is trolling or not. I go about my day and not give a damn. 😛 Daniel Gonzalez Which article was the comment? Marcus Navarro This one. Benny Yeah some people on here just don’t know how Nintendo do bisness. They always come on top. Daniel Gonzalez Brave words. However, Nintendo is lying to themselves if they don’t fear failure. We can all put on the brave face all we like, but the fear will always be there. I think they more so mean they face the fear of it everyday and don’t run from it. That would be a more accurate statement that I could agree with. Bob Wilkerson What I got from his statements was that they accept that in life and in business you are going to have successes and failures and there is no use in fearing failure because it is a fact of life. To object is to learn and grow from those failures but not to be afraid to take a risk or do something because there is a chance you will fail. Daniel Gonzalez We all fear failure, but we decide if we wanna face it head on, or run from it. Sorry, but choosing not to fear it doesn’t make sense. If you didn’t have fear of something, then you’re not really human. We all fear failing, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s what drives us to break past it and prove it wrong, but you can never rid yourself of it. It’ll always be there. I get what he was trying to say, but I don’t fully agree with it. Bob Wilkerson I can honestly say I am not afraid to fail. I don’t want to fail at the things I do and in my life but I am not afraid to fail. So I do not believe everyone fears failure. But if you do then that’s cool I guess. Daniel Gonzalez That’s a nice way to view it, but you’re lying to yourself if you don’t have any fear of it deep in you. I’m not afraid to fail, but that doesn’t mean the fear doesn’t exist. I think you miss the point, but I digress. I think your view on it is flawed, but I’m sure you think the same of mine so I won’t go any further on it and just leave it at that. Jon You might fear failure, but I for one don’t. Sure I don’t want to fail at something, but that doesn’t make me afraid of it. Failure is the best way to learn. Daniel Gonzalez I disagree with that one. I’m not afraid to fail, but that doesn’t mean we don’t fear it. It’s a feeling that we all have deep inside us. You’re entitled to believe you you wish. I have no problems with that. Jon Fear of failing and not wanting to fail are not the same thing. I am not saying I have no fear, but to fear of failing is actually stupid because failing is probably the best way anyone can learn something new. Daniel Gonzalez Of course it’s the best way to learn, but that doesn’t mean we don’t fear it either. No one really wants to fail. If anything, deep down we all want to succeed in everything, but we know that won’t happen so the fear is there. We both have different beliefs so we aren’t going to agree on this one. Irishman I think it’s less about fearing failure and more about remaining optimistic in a community so mentally and cynically united against them (even in your comment just a TINY bit, no offense). We all think, even I for a while, “why do they have to be so childish? Why can’t they make a Skyrim-type Zelda, or a Pokemon MMO? Just mature up, for goodness sake!” That wouldn’t make nintendo the company it is today and (at least indirectly through defying the status quo) innovative. Daniel Gonzalez I’m not against them at all. Lol. Far from it. I’m just not impressed on what they’ve done thus far. I use to love Nintendo more back then, now not as much as I used to. It’s a matter of taste in games. I still do love Smash and Mario Kart games. Other than that, I don’t really care for the rest. Maybe in the future they’ll entice me. Until then, I wait for that moment. As for the fearing failure argument, it’s subjective, so there’s really no right or wrong answer on it. We all have our point of view, so I’m just going to leave it at that. Appreciate the honest and mature discussion. Irishman still, the rhetoric in your original comment, though I’m sure you meant no ill will, is typical of the gamer that has grown into the modern gaming world. To them, Sony and Microsoft are the centers of play, and Nintendo is that seemingly off-kilter, odd company that just happens to also make a console. Attitudes from this mentality range from indifference (as you are) to the ramblings of the very loud minority that wish to see its extinction. Honestly, I could care less what you think, I just wanted to note the wording of your comment. Daniel Gonzalez No one should care what I think, and I don’t care if they don’t care. Just as you. All I ask for is to respect my opinions and I’ll do the same in return. Though, for those I’ve come across here on and off, they have a hard time nailing that down. Mercurio2054 they can’t say that, and you know it. thay can say: we face the challenges that brings every new generation.. or new year or day or what ever… i get your point and you’re right, but they (from my point of view) cant say it. Daniel Gonzalez I know they can’t say it. I agree with you on that. I’m stating that anyone who says they fear nothing such as failure is kidding themselves. I know they won’t say that, because that would be bad for their rep and would make them look bad to the industry. Bob Wilkerson If you fear failure you will always be doomed to fail. The objective is to learn and better yourself from failure. Daniel Gonzalez We all fear it. It’s a matter of will you let it control you, or will you control it? Failure is actually a feeling that if used right, can drive a person to better themselves, and unfortunately, some lose control and let it eat them away. Nintendo has the right mindset, and hope it stays that way. Can’t have a poor mind in this business. No one will save you. Jon We don’t all fear failure. Sure we don’t want to fail but that doesn’t make us afraid of it. Daniel Gonzalez If you say so dude. You have your right to believe in what you want. Skelterz Everytime i see you post something its always negative you emo go back to the microsoft website you have no friends here. Majora’s Mask Kinda true he has stated he doesnt have a wii u so would he be here ? Skelterz Yeah i know everytime i see his bald little head he’s nitpicking everytime he needs to get a life i come here to read learn and enjoy the comments and opinions and then this little bald raincloud just comes and acts like a prick he needs to either buy a wii u so he has a right to chat shit or get a girlfriend and lose his virginity lol. Daniel Gonzalez I talk about things from a business perspective as a lot of people who pay attention instead of acting like they know it all (like yourself) you’d see that. That should clear it up for you. Also, this website doesn’t require you to own a Wii U, so if that bothers you so much, then don’t bother with my comments, unless you enjoy arguing with me. Pick your battles carefully. There’s far worse people over the internet than I. I can chat as much as I like, if you hate that, then go complain to the admins about it. I’m not here to be a Yes man. Cause they’ll most likely laugh at you for thinking the way you do. 🙂 I will at least go as far to say you’re entertaining and do a good job of it. Keep up the nice work. Justin Bailey Go back to Microsoft dude so they can put their Xbone up your Halo. Skelterz I was talking about the bald little gobshite that talks rubbish and tries to get deep with strangers in the comments section he wrote quite a lot of stuff back to me clearly he’s got a lot of time on his hands *cough virgin* Anyway as for you piss off you maggot. Justin Bailey I meant for that comment to go to the “Despicable Me” looking cat but somehow I clicked your reply box instead. Anyway here is a tip. The virgin comments really kill the point your trying to make. That kind stuff is childish and totally irrelevant to anything on this site. Having said that I’m going to go piss off now. 🙂 Daniel Gonzalez I agree with your last part. I don’t know what being a virgin has to do with anything. Yet I’m the troll. I take your Despicable Me comment as a compliment. He is quite the bad ass. Thanks man! Justin Bailey LOL you’re starting to grow on me man Daniel Gonzalez I accept your apology. I know it wasn’t easy to do. Cdwoods Cause everyone’s spending their time losing virginity. And if he has a lot of time posting on here, that must mean you do too for posting on here. Daniel Gonzalez My thoughts exactly. I suppose bloggers and famous novelists are virgins too since they type far more than I in any single day. Gotta love the illogical comments on the internet. Cdwoods I know, right. And I bet that the posters of these illogical comments think they’re being smart too. Daniel Gonzalez Nah, Sony has my heart. Daniel Gonzalez Just like you are here, to get updates on news. Am I right? Also, if you paid attention, I did say I have every intention of owning a Wii U in the future. I don’t have to own a Wii U to be here. Get off your high horse and face reality. Majora’s Mask i understand it but i am not here really for the updates i am here mostly for the chat Daniel Gonzalez As am I. Though, if people get so bent out of shape on this site on what I say and get pissed for no apparent reason, then chatting isn’t their strong point. Daniel Gonzalez Yes, I’m a microsoft fan if I talk negative about Nintendo. You lack common sense I see. I have PS3, 360 and Wii. Nice try trolling. You aren’t very good at it. No, I won’t go anywhere, but you’re welcomed to leave if you like. I’m a universal gamer and play no favorites. As for negative comments, I can have them as much as I like as long as I’m being informative and respectful about it and I have been, unlike yourself. 🙂 The emo card doesn’t work in this situation my friend, so nice try, but no cigar. No friends? I could care less about those on the internet compared to real life. Even so, if you paid attention, I actually do. Goes to show how dumb you actually sound, especially when you do little to no research. Now go back to your troll bridge. You aren’t impressing anyone. You’re a done deal and small time. Have a lovely day now. 🙂 Marcus Navarro As much as I like you, I’d love to see more snark and tone from you. YOU CAN DO EET! That_one_guy99 some people right? Cdwoods Wow, I like how you reply to being called a troll. I know you’re not one because I’m not a moron that thinks a negative comment means troll. starwars360 Stop being depressed. Though you being friendly in early of time on here but now you started to slight troll. 🙂 Daniel Gonzalez So if I have a different opinion then I’m depressed and trolling? Lol. Yeah, makes so much sense dude. That one made me laugh at least though, so I’ll give that to you. Other than that, you don’t seem to know what you’re talking about. I am a friendly person, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have a different opinion than others on here. People see me as slight troll cause they confused me and others for the likes of knowledge and springer85. Not my problem if people are so easily confused. I see you’re one of those people so enough said. Do us both a favor and don’t bother playing shrink, cause you’re not good at it. Have a nice day. 🙂 starwars360 Well I had read so many trolls who want bashed on console or handheld and tell slight stupid or huge stupid things. Lol Daniel Gonzalez Well, I don’t recall bashing Nintendo and any games they have. I just give my two cents. Nothing more. People on here often misinterpret it often as trolling. There’s a difference between trolling and giving your honest opinion about a subject. I can’t help it if people can’t distinguish one thing from another. That’s the internet for you. david jarman I identify you by your eyebrows… Tomorrow is my Friday so I’m excited. Dude, put up a picture of you giving a big cheese smile and two thumbs up. That would throw people off! Daniel Gonzalez Are they that bushy? So much for blending in. 🙁 Me smiling? Oh man….you don’t wanna see that. >:) david jarman Haha! I just thought it might be funny with all this talk about being negative. david jarman “FEAR DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS DOJO, DOES IT?!?!” “NO SENSEI!” …Hee Hee That_one_guy99 “PAIN DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS DOJO, DOES IT?!?!” “NO SENSEI” “DEFEAT DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS DOJO, DOES IT?!?!” ‘NO SENSEI” Nintendo in a nutshell david jarman “Mercy is for the weak” Daniel Gonzalez “Enemy deserves no mercy” david jarman Lol! Yes! That_one_guy99 “Strike first, strick hard, no mercy, sir!” rp17 The thought of a different pikachu scares me! Daniel Gonzalez Something you’ll never see in a Nintendo game, or a Pokemon game anyway. Marcus Navarro You say that like it’s a bad thing. Daniel Gonzalez I don’t. I wouldn’t expect it. I don’t care for Pokemon games, but they are fine the way they are. I would give a wtf look at Nintendo if they went with this. Daniel Carvalho I don’t understand why they downvoted you. That’s true! Mercurio2054 they don’t get the it Daniel Gonzalez When you’re usually confused for a troll, it has something to do with it, but I digress. Bring them on. NkoSekirei i saw a picture of a pikachu eating ash s brain and after seeing that that i said WTF did i just seen Ducked *screams like a little girl* DarkLegacy LOL. Uh oh, *runs away* Mario Listen to yourselfs! Never do anything that looks like THAT! greengecko007 Interestingly enough, they HAVE changed Pikachu from its original design. They have continuously made Pikachu thinner and thinner, perhaps as a result of the popular and very American idea that thinner is more attractive? The True Gamer Maybe the next pikachu will have sandals classicgamer20 or maybe he will have a fedora and ironic glasses Daniel Gonzalez With a Hawaiian shirt. Daniel Gonzalez I don’t think Kate Moss thin is attractive. It’s not really an american thing, though. What’s attractive varies and the media tries to force feed it and tell us what is. I think Pikachu is fine the way he was personally. fireheartis1 Who’s Kate Moss? Daniel Gonzalez A skinny model who barely eats and can slide through the cracks of a door without opening it. greengecko007 Obviously it doesn’t apply to all Americans, but it has been shown that across various cultures, attractiveness in terms of body size tends to be the following… Cultures not faced with poverty and food scarcity tend to view thinner as more attractive. Cultures faced with poverish conditions and food scarcity tend to view more stout or bulky body types as more attractive. This wasn’t a blow to Americans. I’m American, usually proud to be so, and don’t think that thinner automatically means more attractive. Steelmullet Hahahaha. Yes! hahahero pika Marcus Navarro And this is exactly why Nintendo should never fund Pokemon Snakewood. Daniel Gonzalez What happens when Pikachu and Hulk have a baby. Marcus Navarro …oh god… How would that even work? “Hulk give Pikachu his GAMMA RAY DICK!!!” Approx. 5 months later(I presume), the female Pikachu has a baby in Alien-esque fashion. Unless it’s the She-Hulk…I can’t even give you a reason why she would be attracted to an electric mouse… Wendihulk doesn’t reproduce with anything else besides Wendies(I assume), so Pikachu would be kissing satelites. Daniel Gonzalez I guess I have my nightmare to dream up for tonight. Thank you Marcus. IBlock ^ Pikachu’s mega evolution FoxMulder900 “even long time fans of the company are starting to become disillusioned with the long delay for Wii U games” I would have agreed with this statement 6 months ago, but honestly right now I am overwhelmed with games to play, I’m pretty sure the Wii U dry spell is over. Leo What Iwata lacks is a bit more agressiveness in his business. He seems quite satisfied keeping his company on auto pilot while the market change every year. This is good for the overall financial stability and of course its one of the main reasons why Nintendo is a traditional company, but he can’t simply ignore trends and in the public view he seems indiferent to the competition, and he should not. For every business you must keep an eye out of your bubble to evolve with everyone else. Nintendo seems to currently live in its own world, oblivious to what is happening beyond their gates. Inkeyis It’s refreshing to see a company take this stance though. Just look at how Nintendo runs it’s business: almost no one gets fired, they put out out various genres of games instead of sticking and milking one, they allow for backwards compatibility, they allow used games, any paid dlc they provide is always full of content and is usually worth the purchase, and they don’t charge online subscriptions. Nintendo the most consumer friendly video game company in my opinion and that’s why it’s great to see Nintendo do what makes everyone happy instead of selling bad products to make a quick buck. DragonSilths They do milk 1 franchise…Mario…My god TO MUCH MARIO. Inkeyis So far there is only one Mario game on the wiiu. They can keep making Mario as long as they keep making them fun and different. Mario 3d world is an excellent example fireheartis1 That’s one Mario game I’m looking forward too. I haven’t been this excited for a Mario game since Galaxy 1. This game is going to totally rock with it’s innovation on the Mario series. Inkeyis I was so upset with Nintendo when they announced 3d world instead of super Mario sunshine 2. But when I saw the latest trailer, Mario sunshine 2 can wait a little longer. I didn’t even mind when the dk game was delayed DragonSilths Unless you mean NEW Wii U MARIOS your right, but there is Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros 2 (I forget about 1 and 3) on the VC on the Wii U, there is a million Mario games on the 3DS. And getting 2 big Mario games in 2 years on Wii U is leaning towards MILKING IT. Yeah yeah fanboys give me a thumbs down. People cant get it in their fucking head that others don’t like Mario as much as them. Inkeyis Yes, I am only referring to the new super Mario U game. Virtual console games like super Mario world or the old Mario bros games shouldn’t count because they were not made with the wiiu in mind, or with the wiiu at its core. Legend of Zelda wind waker hd would count as a wiiu Zelda game because that was made and designed for the wiiu. In fact, for those who don’t have a wii, those virtual console games are cheaper than other places, so they are putting them on the VC to please the demand for those games. 2 identical Mario games in 2 years is milking the franchise. However Mario 3d world is a 3d platformer and is completely different from its 2d counterpart. Those are two completely different genres of games, and so should be viewed as different games (despite having the same characters). There are a decent amount of Mario games on the 3ds, but Nintendo throws out so many other great games, they really don’t depend on mario. The biggest games this year were fire emblem, dk country, animal crossing, monster hunter 4, bravely default, shin megami tensei, luigis mansion (Mario doesn’t appear), Mario party, Mario Luigi dream team, legend of Zelda, and pokemon. Of all those games, only two were Mario, and they are different Mario games. DragonSilths Both the Wii U Mario games focus on co-op that’s my point about them. Yet no online, so in my mind its 2 failed games. Inkeyis While your at it, why not include Rayman legends since it is a coop game. They are all different games. Since when does not having an online component make your game a failure. Was wii sports a failure? Or the old smash bros or Mario kart? DragonSilths I meant FOR ME THEY ARE A FAILURE. Nintendo keeps choosing to put online on games that don’t need it like Mario an Sonic and the Olympics, and skipping games that need it. For me the only way Mario could top Galaxy 2 was online coop. Daniel Gonzalez Bit strong on your words, but I do agree with it. Not everyone wants Mario. This is true. Agent721 We learn the most from our failures, so we should not fear them as they will make us better in the long run. Nintendo understands this as does Iwata. Guest Look, I absolutely LOVE Nintendo…I grew up with them; watched their successes (Yay SNES!); witnessed the failures (Boo Virtual Boy!), and bought every Nintendo console at launch up until now (still waiting for the right 1st or 2nd party bait). So I root for them to succeed. But whether they want to admit it or not, Nintendo has been hemorrhaging credibility as a leader in the console gaming industry for some time. Nobody can take anything away from them as a software developer. I’ll take a comparably budgeted Nintendo 1st or 2nd party game over the likes of even a Naughty Dog or Rockstar product if it’s the right title (hello, Metroid WIi U; where have you been all my life?). But it’s becoming more and more obvious to me that Nintendo has gotten a bit out-of-touch with modern gamers and modern gaming. You can practically see their figureheads cringe when they hear terms like “gamertags” “cloud streaming” or “DLC.” I fully understand that Nintendo is a gaming company, as opposed to a technology company, but I don’t think Iwata-san saying “Nintendo is not good at competing.” sends the right message (particularly to western developers who always want to do things “bigger, better, faster,” etc.). Nintendo is unabashedly Japanese in the way they do things (far more so than Sony); and that is a good thing in many ways (their quality control standards should embarrass the majority of western developers). But they have to realize that being niche doesn’t necessarily guarantee success. I feel like Nintendo’s insistence that their approach is to deliver ‘affordable family fun’ is like marketing window dressing that blinds people from the fact that for generations, Nintendo has been hedging that affordability (regardless of the sustainability of their typically underpowered and under-featured platforms) will equal console sales. Since Nintendo develops platforms with immediate profitability in mind, they skimp on features that their competitors offer out-the-box to save on manufacturing costs. Sony and Microsoft have always been willing to take a loss at the beginning of the console life cycle, knowing that their massive catalog of AAA blockbusters (and the publishing $ that they receive from 3rd parties) will keep them afloat until they can refine the manufacturing process and cut console prices. The PS4/XBone are the first Sony/Microsoft consoles in two generations to actually dial back the “future proofing” tech to cut costs. Packaged in Nintendo’s trumpeted affordability is a system that works just fine for Nintendo’s 1st party development teams and what they do (NOBODY in the game development industry is better at doing more with less), but has been lacking in many areas for outside (3rd party) developers. I would argue that Nintendo even underestimates the tech savvy of their key target audience (children), but that’s another rant. My point is that Nintendo (and the ancient men who run it) need to realize you can’t be all things to all people if you position yourself as niche right out of the box. How do they expect to attract 3rd parties (who will always push the tech envelope) if you create inflexibility based on “This is how we do things because we’re Nintendo.”? goatringo Nintendo is the only game maker left in the video game industry. Let me clarify. Yes there are plenty of companies out there making video games, but the majority of these so called games are more like movies or short stories made interactive by controller. And though these titles can be intriguing, exciting, and pretty to look at they are not truely games in the traditional sense. They may be exhilerating but lack the most important ingrediant, FUN. That is what seperates N from the rest. The fact they started out making playing cards is testimonial to my opinion. Spades is a game. Computers are not games, tvs are not games. Movies are not games. I give credit to Nintendo, in a house with almost every console ever made, It is nintendo that brings the family and friends together for a game. The True Gamer Last time I checked Forza wasn’t an interactive story. Either was halo. Nothing5555 *cough* beyond two souls *cough* The True Gamer That’s not halo. That’s not Forza. The True Gamer Actually many Nintendo’s games simply lack story. Few games are interactive movies. Very, very few, and those are not generally popular Ony Business model of Nintendo : Fuck you, I do what I want (read: what’s good for the company [read: what’s good for the player]). Still considering that there is a coalition anti-Wii U. mojack411 It’s very interesting to see these two different view-points. On PS4 Daily there was an article not too long back on how Sony “can’t afford to fail with the PS4”. And here we have Nintendo saying almost the opposite that they don’t fear failure. Granted the reasoning behind each are different (Sony as a whole is struggling more now while Nintendo still has the massive successes of the 3DS and doesn’t have to worry about non-gaming branches) but it’s still interesting to see these two statements come out relatively in the same time period. I think this is a bold statement by Iwata that definitely shows the maturity of the company in the face of adversity. At the same time, however, it is a very dangerous statement. Many people may take it to mean that Nintendo has accepted failure of the Wii U when that is far from the truth. I’m not saying that the Wii U will be a runaway success or a massive failure, its still too early to tell. Regardless, naysayers will always exist so it’s not like anything would change. Marcel Jenkins Considering Nintendo has enough dough in the bank to withstand big losses for the next 70 years and never ever make layoffs while companies like Sony are barely staying afloat I’d say the big N is doing pretty well. BIG Franky At the end of the day….anyone that hasn’t experienced failue, hasn’t experienced success. to fear failure is a fear of trying new things… things that might not work, but we can learn from them. Its a principle I incorporate into my own life… check out the awesome book FAILING FORWARD by John Maxwell. It’ll change the way you view success and failure. loved it. Chad Dodsworth Found this today! http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/359953 Jared Garcia It’s hard to stand out in a crowd of the same experience. Nintendo is willing to try new things so differently than others that the people who appreciate it is the minority. A lot of people are content with comparing graphics and not the gameplay of multiplatform games. If Wii U fails, it’s because of the box, not the controller. I’ve shown off my Wii U at the local game store and a lot of people haven’t played it until then. After that they are impressed, but there needs to be more demo booths to promote it. Dáibhí wotshissurname This is why I love Nintendo. They are one of the few companies that I can actually say aren’t tided over by majority money. I liked the Wind Waker because it felt like people wanted to make the game because it was their passion as well as their job. Wiiluigi Since the dawn of time people have wanted Nintendo to fail. Nintendo takes risks trying new ways to entertain their consumers. At one point or another companies will fail or hit a bump in the road. I hate that people say that the reason Nintendo is failing due to the lack of games. I have said this time and time again Nintendo has a ton of games but people now a days like to play games for 5 minutes and on to the next one. My back catalogue for the Wii U and 3DS is disgusting. I cant keep up! But there will ALWAYS be an issue because if there were games then there is too many or people will complain That Nintendo is raping their pockets. People are never happy. I suggest you get your moneys worth out of these games master them and be patient. I would also like to say that Nintendo is somewhat at fault here too because of the lack of marketing and development. I mean how long does it take these companies to master their own hardware? Why do they take the “we’ll learn as we go” approach? The hardware should be developed alongside the software. If not, master this hardware and release software after you’re done doing so. When you have enough of a head start release said games with hardware. Then develop others and not have us “wait while you learn” YOUR OWN HARDWARE?! I don’t mean half assed games I mean games to the systems full potential. Think about it Apple doesn’t release a phone and say oh well we need you to wait for our OS to be developed. All that being said I don’t think Nintendo will fail and if they do they have enough money to start the next project. tlopuse This is why Nintendo is the best. 3rd parties start making games for us, and don’t be baby cry. Buuuu buuuu. And Rayman legends is the best 2d ever, thanks ubi. Cdwoods Lol, twitter says he does fear failure. Ducked Nintendo learned with the GameCube, loved the console, but it bombed in sales compared to Nintendo’s other Home Consoles. GameCube was graphically more powerful then PS2, but the discs were to small to fit that extra memory for games like GTA, Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of Colossus, and others. Plus, PS2 had the hype from PS1. Going extremely innovative and casual with Wii and Nintendo DS won both handheld and console wars of the 7th generation. I think the 3DS will be software wise the greatest handheld ever made, and it’s already got $30 million units sold with in just 2 and a half years! It’s time to see what the Wii U’s gamepad, and new software releases will put the Wii U at. Cdwoods Twitter says they do fear, lol. RyuNoHadouken they should fear failure because theyre living it Vakua Dorn Iwata FTW! leo i can’t wait for nintendo to be on TOP again The True Gamer You got 172 dislikes. DarkLegacy I wonder why everyone has a maximum downvote of 100 and 200. Mercurio2054 its a problem DarkLegacy Yeah I know the problem, it’s being attacked Daniel Gonzalez Dunno. I wouldn’t worry about downvotes. They are never really that accurate. Same goes for upvotes. It’s pretty much an abused system. DarkLegacy I don’t know why either. I don’t worry about the downvotes well it depends if it’s higher than my upvote Nintedward The system works absolutely fine…. it seems like its been hacked or someone has like LOADS of accounts or something. Very strange. Lots of people have 100’s of downvotes for harmless comments. DarkLegacy I was thinking about someone that has 100’s of accounts that give you or anyone 100 or 200 downvotes. But except for me and the others we haven’t got 100 downvotes just yet leo I know that’s the beauty of it, (NES days people!) Mario I sometimes fear failure. But I fear not doing anything even more! Daniel Gonzalez That comment makes perfect sense to me. Mario Thank you for your understanding. Daniel Gonzalez Your welcome. Blugrave I like Iwata, he can stay. As for Nintendo’s challenges. Whether it be Wii U or an oscilloscope Nintendo will always sell. GTA or whatever huge franchise can never Match Smash Bro’s or Pokemon. Just look at the damage Animal Crossing did all over the World. Imagine if they made a newer better AC for Wii U psh, whose competing? Marcos Crill Colon What you think a new ac ain’t coming trust me with the success of the last one there working on that as we type these comments lol.. just look how they introduced smash 4 with a ac opening Elem187 AC3 was terrible, because of it I will never buy another AC game. Daniel Gonzalez They have, and won. If you’re talking about GTA vs Pokemon and Smash. Those games never came close in sales. GTA V already sold a billion in three days, who knows how much now. Not to say that Smash and Pokemon aren’t big sellers, but not as big as GTA games. I don’t think any company is competing here. Games like GTA and AC are highly successful, so why would they compete? Come now. That didn’t make any sense. These arguments on who is competing get old. Also the who is better is subjective to each individual. Some people love GTA and some hate it, just as some people hate Smash and others love it. It goes both ways. oontz Lol, no one is competing. Rockstar destroyed every other game developer. They even destroyed every other media developer, even movies. Maybe do some research before responding and looking like a tool. Inkeyis It’s refreshing to see a company take this stance. Nintendo the most consumer friendly video game company in my opinion and that’s why it’s great to see Nintendo do what makes everyone happy instead of selling bad products to make a quick buck. greengecko007 Nintendo doesn’t need to “fear” failure, because they aren’t failing. At the same time, they don’t need to act like it’s an impossible scenario for them to fail. They need to escape their comfort zone and get to work on keeping up with things like online multiplayer and DLC, which they are making an effort to do (somewhat). Steelmullet cool! Mark Nintendo can go against the status quo like they do, but what they should do, is copy what is RIGHT with the current and next gen consoles. Bring out the hardware that makes us go wow. Bring out the online infrastructure that makes it seamless to go online like PSN and Xbox Live. Nintendo can still be Nintendo, doing things differently does not mean that you have to become completely different. The Nintendo touch will still be on its controllers and franchises. There is no need to sacrifice everything else just to be different. You are doing a disservice to your consumers smashbrolink The real disservice would be scrapping the Wii U this soon after launch in favor of a more costly console with higher specs. No one would buy it so soon after buying a Wii U, and it would make a lot of the development efforts from indies and third parties, not to mention first and second party projects, waste millions by having to restart from scratch to learn the ins and outs of the new stuff, wasting time and setting back release dates even further. People need to get the whole idea, that Nintendo needs a more powerful machine RIGHT NOW, out of their heads ASAP. The online infrastructure on the Wii U is doing just fine, btw. It just needs better chat functions and maybe lobbies, and everything will be golden. Mark Don’t scrap it. I like my Wii U. But like the gamecube. Good first party support. Shit 3rd party. If 3rd parties want higher specs, hell even specs that match the others bloody do it. Stop bringing out underpowered consoles that only in house can make franchise games for. Give them the specs and then do what Nintendo does and make it different. Stop bringing out 2nd rate hardware with a gimmick ( that rocks btw ) to justify the decision smashbrolink Shin’en and Platinum seem to have had no issues bringing out games that are fantastic, in both looks and gameplay, regardless of the console’s specs, though. Methinks that if other third parties tried to do the same a little more often instead of relying upon poor ports of old games that are lacking content and are overpriced, then bitching when they don’t sell, you and I wouldn’t even need to have this conversation; the Wii U would have games developed specifically for it and they would sell well. Also, need I bring up Rayman Legends? I know it’s an often-played card, but that game is AWESOME, and it sold best on Wii U. The audience is here for third parties; they just need to make games that would sell well instead of relying on ports. It’s getting to the point where I’d rather pay for Nintendo’s ports of games from their past that I’ve already played before; at least with those games I don’t have to worry about missing DLC or multiplayer, or badly optimized visuals, and in some cases even the price is better. Third parties should leave ports to Nintendo and focus on new content, I guess is what I’m getting at. Third parties fail, for the most part, at making their ports sell on the Wii U due to their content-cutting for the sake of development costs. Elem187 Whats funny is Rayman Legends bombed on PS3/xBox 360, yet sold the best on Wii U, despite having 1/70th the install base. Elem187 Anyone who suggests scrapping the Wii U are complete idiots and do not understand the first thing about business. releasing a beefier specced console would raise the price of their system tremendously…. If gamers are already complaining about the $300 price tag, they will really be squealing when the console is $600 (lets be honest, Nintendo has to sell near cost, they can’t afford to take a large hit on every console sold) Nintendo always shoots to be the cheapest of the big three, the day they stop being the cheapest, is the day Nintendo fails. Parents look for their rated E for Everyone titles and their inexpensive hardware. Thats the companies bread and butter every holiday season. Elem187 Nintendo is more like apple.. their hardware is a lot to be desired, but who cares their software is by far the best. Software sells consoles, not spec sheets. Look at the Vita, specs look great on paper, but with no interesting games the system continues to sell like poop. Mark Exactly. And with no 3rd party support you wont push the software units. Rinslowe In all honestly, with 4+ billion USD in the bank (cold hard cash), a runaway handheld success on a profit (3DS). I’d be inclined to take Mr. Iwata seriously with that comment… Mohammad Badir *14 billion Rinslowe Is it? It looks like I’m a bit out of date on the Big N’s coffers… Not a small amount by any means, especially for a company of Nintendo’s size (compared to the other two conglomerates)… Elem187 Its definitely above 10 billion… their market cap is almost 20 billion Mohammad Badir i think you might be surprised that Sony has just a “bit” more money than Nintendo, but the area that Nintendo excells in is debt, as they have pretty much zero debt compared to Sony/MS, in fact, their debt is so small that investors don’t even consider it when they look at their businnes decisions! so all in all, Nintendo as a company is a lot healthier than Sony. Cyberus Oh, you’re making the new Call of Duty? Ah, that’s cool. We were just inventing mainstream consoles, sidescrollers, 3D games, mainstream touch screens, mainstream motion control. Microsoft: wha BOOM, JUST INVENTED AUGMENTED REALITY SleepySkullhead Wii Fit U Plus using augmented reality. I think that would be cool. oontz ummm, Nintendo didn’t invent any of those things, let alone make them popular enough to be mainstream. Cyberus I can’t think of a single sidescroller before Super Mario Bros, can you Elem187 There is none. SMB 1 invented it. Previously ALL games had a static background. Nintendo was the first to make one dynamic. This troll has been proven wrong, we can go ahead and dismiss EVERYTHING he ever has to say again. Cyberus Thank you, Elem CYBERUS AND ELEM WIN AND REALISE FRIENDSHIPS MORE IMPORTANT oontz No, you both fail and look stupid doing so. Cyberus He couldn’t handle the friendship oontz ha ha, you’re an idiot. Were you born after 1985? cause there were 5 years of side scrolling games BEFORE super mario bros came out in 1985. Sorry but you FAIL so badly!! First side scrolling shooter, Defender First side scrolling racer, Rally x First side scrolling platform, Jump bug First side scrolling beat-em up, Kung Fu Master All released years before Nintendo’s 1985 Super Mario Bros. Maybe do some research and learn the history of video games before making yourself look like a complete idiot. oontz First side scrolling shooter, Defender First side scrolling racer, Rally x First side scrolling platform, Jump bug First side scrolling beat-em up, Kung Fu Master All released before Nintendo’s 1985 game Super Mario Bros Andy Samson Though it may seem arrogant to some, I find it chivalrous. Live by the code, die by the code. You wouldn’t find many companies who sticks to their ideals and live by it. devmiles ”We’ve known for some time that Nintendo marches to the beat of its own drum” This caputes the essence of the state of nintendo very well. Nintendo was the first very successful game company with an image and iconic character called mario. Sega stepped in as well and it was always those two who competed in the game console market. Back in the days you always had that Sega vs Nintendo fight with your friends or if you were a true badass you had a NES/SNES and Megadrive. It was because of a cancelled deal with sony that started the development of the playstation by sony itself, something that became reality in 1994. The reason was the fact that nintendo still wanted to do things their own way but my god the arrival of the playstation opened up the game industry big time and the competition was on. Speeding things a little up around 2000, Sega stepped out after too many console failures (big respect to dreamcast and saturn), Microsoft stepped in and PC became very common and big business. Nintendo gave us the handheld in many formats, N64, Gamecube and Wii, all very succesfull products with iconic games that made it a very wealthy and cherished company, not to forget pokemon. If you consider the game industry as islands nintendo is one and in my opinion it does extremely well but perhaps made some decisions or directions that i can’t quite follow. I don’t find the company so transparent or communicative or perhaps to say open. As for their consoles they are always very own platform while for instance ps2 and xbox and x360 and ps3 now are closer together in market and specs that both platforms mostly have the same blockbusters aside from some own IP’s… this has been going on for a while, say as one bigger island. Someone here said the gamecube was very advanced but had small cd’s that meant less data, no dvd drive etc. N64 had cards (when nintendo still believed in that) Nintendo sailed off to their own sealed of island and left some big developers behind, still they stand strong with their own franchises but perhaps some people (like myself) are getting a bit skeptical now and wonder what the next move or thought is as microsoft and sony are much more transparant, quicker, flashier and keep bombing us with many many titles and seem to have much more support surrounded. The wii has been sold by the millions and has some very good games but nintendo chose not to go in the hd era at that time and i think (miyamoto confirmed) that is a bit of a shame. Nintendo’s aim is always accessible price so perhaps not the latest technology but they rely on throwing in some of their own magic that in terms only nintendo can specifically the way they do or design games. I can’t deny..i’m still a big nintendo fan but i play more on my ps3. the offer of games is just so very large and so many good and serious titles too. i want serious entertainment too 18+ or more matured gameplay and scenery. playing mariokart with your friends is one thing but playing ‘the last of us’ or ‘bioshock’ or GTA5 is just a very other level of entertainment. After all of this we just know that we will be surprised and above all ultimately amazed when we will have a metroid on wii-u or a real zelda like the tech demo we saw. what happened to starfox or even castlevania, megaman etc.. even those classics are detached now from nintendo and gone other platform. maybe i write this with a little frustration that it all takes so much time with the wii-u and with games postponed and very little output it just saddens me nintendo is not my good ol nintendo no more…i don’t know.. Monty Mont Im a long time Nintendo fan. I grew up with them but its discouraging that they arent advertising the system, I rarely see commercials for any Wii U games. The pieces are all there….they just need to literally show it off. That will help with sales..Sony and Microsoft try somethings but Nintendo stays in dark….I hate seeing the Big N made fun cuz no one buys it. It would sell if they did a better job advertising it -_-. devmiles i completely agree with this, same as with their approach to E3, very sad and stupid. Gamers want to feel touch and see, very simple WiiU4life Here is what everyone, and by everyone I am referring to gamers and gaming media do not realize…Nintendo was caught with their pants down by the success of the original Wii. Nintendo is and was more than capable of hitting a home run out the gate when they released the U last November. Rather than doing the perceived obvious Nintendo once again went the way of disruptive innovation choosing to focus on a long term approach rather than swinging for the fences out of the gate. Need proof… If you were to include Downloaded titles as well as physical copy software, how many wiiU games do you own? I have about 20!! I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt I have never had this many games on one system ever in my life! I have been gaming since 1985! The million dollar question is how many games does the average Wii U gamer have not how many systems have been sold. When it’s all said and done, not only will the U bounce back but the Wii brand will go down as the best video-gaming brand of all time! Mark my words. Saul Strange “Nintendo is not competing” Riiiight. So the lackluster launch and reception of the Wii U was intentional? I don’t think so. Competition and innovation go hand in hand, it’s the way capitalism (and successful businesses in general) work. If there’s no competition, innovation declines. Of course they’re competing, but I guess it sounds cooler to say you’re not trying to compete when your latest product isn’t selling as well as hoped. C4 Maybe they haven’t foreseen it properly when everyone else did. On paper the launch and post launch had 2 or 3 1st party games and more then a dozen of 3rd party games. I mean from an outsiders point of view that looks very solid but wasn’t much you haven’t seen on Wii, Xbox 360 or PS3 before, so as you said there wasn’t any highlight that made people buy a Wii U (although NSMBU is one of the best 2D J&Rs but I guess it was released too close to the 3DS and Wii NSMBs) Now I think they should try to compete, while Wii U lacks in some genres (shooter, sports, racing) the upcoming releases is something they should push and compete with every other console. At least in western markets you have to be aggressive in marketing… although word of mouth was something that helped the Wii back then in addition to the good (or at least successful) marketing exposure. Carlos Coronado Why people keep saying that Nintendo is doom if there sales are better than Sony the Wii sold more than ps3 and the ds sold more than psp and the 3ds sold more than ps vita fireheartis1 I think Iwata is a good president for Nintendo. He has made some great mistakes, but he has also brought out some great innovation. If Nintendo would have considered how long it takes to make a HD game they would have had plenty of games before the 8 month draught happened. This falls on Iwata as well, but if I wasn’t for him so many Wii’s wouldn’t have been sold when they came out. Iwata may not be perfect but he is still a great president for Nintendo. Cdwoods Lol, twitter says thy do fear. Mj78 I sold my Wii u two months ago and do not regret it. The game pad is a great idea but no body has really bothered utilising it. The best games so far are re hashes of ten year old games and however much nintendo try to drive wii u forwards now and over the next few months, the damage is done. Iwata makes comments, or rather excuses at every turn and whilst wii u sales will no doubt show some improvement, they will not increase the user base enough to attract third parties back. PS4 and Xbox one will be around for at least 7 years and at that point, nintendo will be making games for other platforms, although they will still be kings of the handheld. Iwata has made basic mistakes and looks a chump when it comes to wii u. The name, the lack of games, the lack of advertising etc is down to him and he should take the ultimate responsibility and resign. If he were a football manager, he would have been sacked by now for spending loads of money and failing to deliver results. Elem187 Nobody believes you..> If you really sold your console(doubt you ever had one) you wouldn’t be going to Wii U sites to troll. Mj78 I did have one, and do you or anyone else understand the word ‘troll’? No you don’t because trolling is evil, offensive and often criminal, so please do not use a word that you do not understand the meaning of. I had a wii u from day one, and the reason I still visit sites about Wii u and Nintendo is because I am a Nintendo fan and have always enjoyed the consoles and games, and I keep checking to see if there is that chink of light that might make me believe that Wii u can come back and fight. And if it does happen, I may consider re purchasing one, but Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros etc, as good as they will no doubt be, are not enough for me and are just desperate attempts to sell the odd extra console. Nintendo have marketed Wii u very badly if at all, the games are just not good enough and the big line up is first party games that have been done again and again. I knew someone would use the word troll, but that is because, as I have said already, that you do not understand what a troll is. Trolls cause major harm and if you read the papers (rather than comics) you would see that they are horrible, destructive people and I am far from that, so I suggest that next time you accuse of me such demonic actions, you perhaps stop and think about what you are saying. Take a step back and think about wii u and even when you take off the rose tinted specs that you wear, it is clear that Iwata and Nintendo have got it badly wrong this time around. If you do not like, I do NOT apologise because these sites are about debate and opinion, and just because you do not agree with one or more opinions, that does not give you the right to throw around blind and badly inaccurate accusations. oontz Do you even know the meaning of troll? You’re a loser. Διονύς84 “Nintendo is not good at competing” And that’s how the beginnings of an end begin… Also, my god Iwata is not photogenic at all. Haircut and gym asap Mj78 Nintendo as a company will be around for many years and will remain the kings of the handheld but in terms of being a main player in the next generation, I think their time is over and we will see their games start to appear on PS4 and XBone in the next 3 to 5 years. I had a wii u but the games are just re hashes, the game pad is a poor tablet and is not well utilised and when games like NFS most wanted are released which is awesome, no one bought it! Nintendo has gone too far into being the children s choice and although the sales of Wii U will pick up over Xmas, in terms of being part of the next gen, the game is over. And before anyone starts, I am not a troll, I love Nintendo but the games line up they are now relying on are ten year old rehashes which is just not good enough. Sorry, but if you all take off your Nintendo blinkers for one second, you will see that 3DS is massive and will remain so for some time, Wii U has been a mess from day one – sad, but undeniably true. crocodileman94 While I don’t care much about the upvotes and downvotes, all these 100-300 downvotes on the various comments are really suspicious. linxz I think he should resign for the sake of this company. He makes mistakes and doesn’t seem to learn from them. He took devastating decisions with the Wiiu on so many ends that i doubt it will ever have a chance to recover. He and the rest of the team somehow remind me of old soviet politicians who were experts at propaganda and deception. and saying that Nintendo is what it is and can take a failure, means that they are giving up on existing customers who have supported the console so far. Supporters of a failed product….not a good thing to associate your customers with. not a good thing to say or imply in general. Elem187 That is asinine. Iwata over saw the DS and the Wii… and now the 3DS is a success story after it faced the same negative publicity the Wii U is currently facing. It is temporary and will pass as the Wii U starts to sell. I’m not going to doubt the strategy thats in place, it has worked before and will work again. Great software sells consoles, not having awesome specs… but then again the PS4/xBone are no where near as fast as people claim.. Both are about on par with a low-end gaming rig, so to see arrogant fanboys trolling Nintendo sites is quite ironic. Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3 I think Iwata has Nintendo in good hands, and that within the next few years, when Iwata makes the haters eat their dust, they’ll never doubt Nintendo ever again. Green Iwata is cool. Sony is cool. IDC for microsoft, but they’re cool. Why’s everyone hate each other? Who cares, can’t we all just respect each other? Jessenia Lopez nintendo is dead to me ACE no nos importa perra de sony FlashFan207 Nintendo have long been innovators. Wii motion gaming revolutionized the video game industry, as did the 3D screen of the 3DS, just as the Wii U game pad will. It already has, as you see Sony trying to copy the idea with linking the Vita with the PS4 for some gaming compatibility. Nintendo has always been on the forefront, with Sega trailing in the beginning, and now with Microsoft and Sony taking cues from them. Hardware processing power is all that they can come up with on their own. Nintendo’s ingenuity and outside-of-the-box thinking has made them industry leaders, and as long as that continues to direct the company mindset, all us Wii U owners are in for some really special gaming moments, mark my words. oontz Ummmm, fail. Sony had remote, off screen play on the psp. Well before development of the wiiu even started. So who copied who exactly? Thanks for trying though. FlashFan207 Dude, just take a look at the colossal failure of Move, if we’re pointing fingers. If you don’t think Nintendo are innovators, why are you on this site, exactly? Enjoy your Wii U or don’t. It’s up to you. oontz You pointed fingers first… you said “Sony trying to copy the idea with linking the Vita with the PS4 for some gaming compatibility.” Which isn’t true, sony was doing this on psp. Nintendo as of late is more about gimmicks then innovation. FlashFan207 Respectfully, I disagree. Nintendo’s innovations are not gimmicks. They are simply trying to think of new ways of gaming. We should never fault them for that. I honestly had no idea that the PSP could hook up to a PS. Thank you for that information, but frankly your delivery method of that was disrespectful. What games did it work for? Is it supported in the same way the Wii U does it, as in every game (and what I am presuming they are planning to do with the Vita). Does anyone actually use that function? Could I truly be the only person who was not aware of it? Are there more out there who are not aware of that function than there are those who simply believe the Wii U game pad is only an accessory for Wii, rather than a full-on, dedicated new system, which is more my point on what Nintendo did with the Wii U. I believe they should be acknowledged for having the guts to box that into a gaming system, so individuals such as myself are not expected to pay hundreds more dollars on another portable system, simply so that it can be used as a peripheral for their console. I respect Nintendo and try to support them, thus my reading and commenting on this web site. I truly believe they are industry leaders, and that the other companies take cues from them. My other points in the original post are definitely still valid. I don’t know about you, but for me personally there is much more to gaming than merely graphics capabilities, which has kept my interest away from these next-gen systems and directly on enjoying my Wii U. It seems that was all Sony and Microsoft have made the efforts to improve upon with their new systems. And you know what? They will sell tons and tons of them. But there are those of us out there who look to Nintendo for that very unique and interesting gaming experience, full of personality, charm and character that only Nintendo games can bring them. Enjoy your gaming, my friend. oontz I do enjoy my gaming, regardless on what platform. If a game is great, I’ll play it. Igor It is Nintendo that fears Iwata.
